Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the development this week.

About Sexual Exploitation And Abuse…

Tackling Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment

Sexual exploitation & abuse (SEA) of the communities we serve is a grave violation of WHO’s commitment to serve and protect the vulnerable. Sexual harassment (SH) of our workforce is a serious failure of our duty of care. This is the sentiment of WHO’s leadership, staff and her Member States. But we all know and acknowledge that more could and should be done. And done quickly. The risks of SEA have increased significantly in recent years.

WHO is increasingly operational, being called on to operate to save lives and minimize death, disease and suffering in our health programmes and emergency response operations. Our work in countries of fragility, conflict and vulnerability increase the risk of exploitation.

We work with UN agencies and NGOs to address these risks jointly, and aim to meet the standards set by WHO’s own policies and Code of ethics and professional conduct as well as meet the requirements and expectations set by the UN system and IASC partners.

WHO is scaling up its efforts to do everything in its power to prevent and protect from SEAH. Everyone – staff, consultants, suppliers, partners – has an obligation to report any suspected events that may constitute SEAH.

Six (6) imbibers in Karoi were left stunned after they found three condoms at the bottom of a beer container popularly known as a “scud”.

The six, Garikayi Musakambeva, Sheppard Mahwande, Robson Nyamande, Josphat Nyamapfeni, Lazarus Venganayi and Alec Kamwaya were sharing the scud when they made the shocking discovery.

The incident occurred at the Zingwe bottle store near Chikangwe bus terminus last Wednesday.

The men have since reported the matter at the Delta depot in Karoi and investigations are underway. Musakambeva told NewsDay:

I was taking my last sip when I came across an open condom inside.

We found out that there were actually two more condoms in the scud.

We went to report the matter to the police, who referred us to the hospital.

Their medical report dated 19 January 2022 indicates that the men were referred to Delta via the police.

Mahwande said one of the condoms had been opened, while the other two were sealed.

In a written response to NewsDay, Delta general manager for corporate affairs Patricia Murambinda confirmed that she received the report last Friday. She said:

The said product sample was only left yesterday (Thursday) at our Karoi Delta distribution centre for further analysis in Harare by our quality control department.

We haven’t had such cases. For now, I can’t comment on anything until the full process of investigation has been done to ascertain the contents of the pack.- NewsDay

Man Drowns In Mazowe River Found Without Body Parts

By- A 55-year-old man from Avoca Farm in Bindura who drowned last Wednesday while crossing the flooded Mazowe River was found four days later without his neck, head and private parts.

Muzondiwa Jekemu reportedly crossed from Avoca to Matemba area to drink beer with his friends at around 6pm.

A witness, Mr Chapasura Mapepa, said Jekemu returned later that night but upon arrival at the river he found the canoe he had used before missing. He was also carrying a goat’s head that he had been given by friends.
“He met people who were panning for gold by the river and inquired about the canoe. He insisted that he was going home regardless and took off his overalls and gumboots,” said Mr Mapepa.

“He tied the goat’s head to his trouser and swam. The gold panners who were watching said he managed to cross to the river bank but dropped the goat head in the water.
“He returned into the water to get his meat and we saw him being swept away. The following day his family started looking for him and a search started.”
He was found on Sunday seven kilometres away from where he drowned.

“The search party could not reach where his body was and we travelled for 20 kilometres around the river to retrieve the body. I was among the people who retrieved the body and his neck, head and private parts were missing,” said Mapepa.
“One of his thighs was severed and we suspected that he was attacked by a crocodile. We are waiting for police investigations and burial.”
Mashonaland Central police was not available for comment.

Mwonzora Follows Khupe, Wants Her Jobless

By- MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora has announced its intention to recall suspended vice president Thokozani Khupe.

Khupe last week said that the troubled opposition had split.

Mwonzora suspended Khupe and said she had several allegations, subject to an investigation.

Mwonzora’s spokesperson Lloyd Damba on Monday confirmed to NewsDay the plans to recall Khupe from Parliament where she is a proportional representation MP. Said Damba:

There is nothing in the MDC-T called an official proclamation of a split.

That alone as she is accusing Mwonzora of having flouted the constitution, she herself has done the same by announcing an official proclamation of a split when there is no such clause in the MDC-T constitution.

Khupe is in Parliament because of the MDC Alliance brand. We are going to recall her, and she is going to court. We are going to smoke the enemy out.

However, Khupe’s spokesperson Ntando Ndlovu insisted that Mwonzora does not have the authority to recall his boss. He said:

Douglas Mwonzora dismissed himself from MDC-T after writing to Zec on the 3rd of January informing it that he has formed a new party called MDC Alliance.

It, therefore, follows that Mwonzora doesn’t have any legal authority to recall anyone from Parliament.

We implore Parliament and State institutions to exercise impartiality in discharging their duties by making sure that one faction cannot recall legislators who belong to another faction.

Villagers Mob Adulterous Teacher, Vandalise His Bedroom

By- A Seke music teacher was on Wednesday attacked by villagers after he was caught in a compromising position with a married woman in his bedroom.

Shakespeare Chimbetete, a music teacher at Murape Primary School, was attacked and had his house doors and windowpanes destroyed .
The mob accused him of bedding a married woman, Chipo Dhliwayo (21) in his bedroom at Chakahwata Village.
Sources say Dhliwayo’s minor child was heard crying in the house, attracting her sister-in-law Kudzai Chipazura who caught the two in a compromising position.
Dhliwayo had been hired to weed Chimbetete’s field for payment. Chimbetete denied the allegations.
Dhliwayo, who is married to Norman Chipazura (36) said: “I am a victim of circumstances considering that my husband has been failing to feed the family,” said Dhliwayo.
“I have been working for this teacher for some time and receiving six dollars per day.
“On the day in question, Sir Chimbetete invited me to his bedroom to select potato seeds for planting, before I start weeding his field, as agreed.
“Tete Kudzai vakabva vapinda mumba imomo vakasvikopopotera Sir kuti murikurara nemuroora wangu.
“Ndakuwonai mavekupfeka uye dikita nderei?
“Sensing danger, I ran away and sought refuge at one of my friends’ home in a nearby village.
“Chimbetete never proposed love to me and we never had sex as alleged.
“He sometimes conducts extra lessons at the house although on the day in question no child came for lessons.
“My husband learnt that I was hiding at my friend’s house and came to make peace with me.

“I explained everything to him and he asked me to return home, dismissing aunt Kudzai’s claims.
“Murume akanditi dai ari iye akandiwanikidza angadai andiramba saka hama dzake ndidzo dziri kundishungurudza.
“My reason for escaping from the scene and home was to avoid my husband since he is a violent person.
“I look after my husband’s two children from his first marriage and I have one child with him,” said Dhliwayo.
Chimbetete told H-Metro his house was stoned.
“I am a teacher at Murape Primary School and I teach music and some children come for music lessons at my house,” said Chimbetete.
“There was no way I would bed that woman considering that some children come any time for music lessons.
“I separated with my wife last year and I stay alone.
“Some of the villagers thronged my house threatening to kill me, that is why I escaped and they broke into my house and stole US$315.
“Ndakakumbira Dhliwayo kuti andibatsire kusarudza maseeds emapotatoes tete vake vachibva vasvika tiri mumba.
“I never bedded Dhliwayo as alleged and I intend to lodge a police report against the people who broke into my house.
“I have been hiring Dhliwayo for part-time jobs at my house for some time and paying her dues.
“My fear is that the issue might be exaggerated, but the truth is that I never did anything wrong and her husband accepted his wife back,” said Chimbetete.

Super Eagles Coach Resigns After AFCON Elimination

Augustine Eguavoen has resigned from his post as the head coach of Nigeria following the team’s elimination in the Round of 16 at the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.

Eguavoen guided the team at the tournament on an interim basis following the sacking of former manager Gernot Rhor in early December last year.

However, the Super Eagles, who maintained a 100% record in the group stage, lost 1-0 to Tunisia on Sunday and exited the competition.

“What happens next is that I’m the interim coach and Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF),” Eguavoen was quoted as saying DailyPost.ng.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) had named Jose Peseiro as the new permanent coach of the Super Eagles before the Afcon started.

The 61-year-old was expected to be in Cameroon as an observer prior to taking over for the World Cup qualifiers in March, but did not travel.

And the football body later claimed Peseiro has not signed any contract to take over the national team after the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations. – Soccer24 Zimbabwe

5 People Die From Road Accidents In Zim

By A Correspondent- Five people die every day on average because of road accidents in Zimbabwe, says a review on road safety in the country.

But, the report says, this can be reversed.

Launching the Road Safety Performance Review report for Zimbabwe, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Vera Songwe, said the cost of road crashes is heavy on the African economies, especially at this time when the continent is struggling to relaunch its economy amidst the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis.

“Anything that takes away from Africa’s GDP growth becomes important because we need every bit of it to be able to move forward better. The request by the Zimbabwe authority to review their road transport and safety is encouraging given the dire road safety situation in the country but also the economic context that is very difficult,” Songwe said

The ECA executive secretary also noted that there is an increase in the importation of second-hand vehicles in Zimbabwe and other African countries.

“As a continent we need to take off importation of vehicles that are not up to standard that end up costing lives and are detrimental to economic development,” she said.

The review, conducted in partnership with United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety and the Zimbabwe government, is aimed at reducing the number of road accident deaths and injuries in the country.

It found that road traffic crash deaths in Zimbabwe rose by about 34% between 2011 and 2019. Fatalities rose from 1 836 in 2016 to an average of 2 000 deaths per year – over five deaths per day – from 2017 to 2019.

Songwe commended Jean Todt, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety for commissioning the report in collaboration with ECA and ensuring its successful completion.

She also lauded the government of Zimbabwe for seeing the need to conduct the road safety performance review, which shows the Government’s commitment to prioritizing road safety as a Sustainable Development issue. Vera Songwe urged more countries to recognize its importance to their growth and development.

Zimbabwe is the fourth African country after Cameroon, Ethiopia and Uganda to launch a road safety performance review report.

The purpose of the Road Safety Performance Review Report for Zimbabwe was to determine progress made in implementing the first United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 with the objective of stabilizing the rate of road crash fatalities and reduce them by 50% by 2020. It also makes recommendations to the Government to strengthen road safety management for the Second Decade of Action, 2021-2030.

Jean Todt, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety said Africa has the highest road fatalities in the world. Todt said that the figure, of about five people dying every day in Zimbabwe from road crashes, was likely to triple if no action was taken.

He said Zimbabwe could reverse the high number of accidents on its roads by implementing the recommendations of the review report.

“Reports indicate that 90% of the people and goods in Africa are moved by road. Transport and mobility can only be sustainable if it is safe. We need safer roads, better vehicles, quality data and safer infrastructure for a sustainable road transport in Africa,” said Todt.

Todt urged the Zimbabwe government to fully implement the seven core United Nations Conventions on road safety, the African Road Safety Charter, and the Intergovernmental Agreement on the Trans-African Highways.

He noted that worldwide, 1,3 million people are killed every year from road crashes and over 50 million are injured, with Africa recording the highest fatality rates per 100 000 inhabitants.

John Mangwiro, deputy minister of Health and Child Care pointed out that road accidents are a major cause of preventable deaths and injuries in the world including in Zimbabwe.

“We are committed in ensuring road safety through the implementation of actions mentioned in the report,” Mangwiro said.

The government, he said, has opened an accident and emergency reporting institution and plans to equip ambulances with personnel that can efficiently handle road accidents. The ambulances will be placed strategically along highways.

Training of health workers on road accident emergencies will also be done to provide intensive care services immediately which is critical in preventing deaths.

George Vera, National Consultant for the report said the Road Safety Performance Review identified four priority interventions agreed between UNECE/UNECA and confirmed by national stakeholders.

They include Road Safety Management strengthening; increasing capacity of the National Road Safety Lead Agency; a road Crash Database, improving statistical indicators and disaggregated data, and Post-Crash Care Response and Coordination System (establishment of a lead coordinating agency).

The report also recommends a 10-Year national road safety strategy and action plan to improve road safety in Zimbabwe between 2021 – 2030.

NOTE TO EDITORS: The road safety review, requested by the Government of Zimbabwe, was conducted in partnership with the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety, ECA, and the United Nations Economic Commissions for Europe (UNECE). The review provides a detailed assessment of the road safety and management capacity situation in the country, and pinpoints concrete measures to save lives.-Newsday

Chiyangwa Wants Maintenance Fees to Estranged Wife Reduced

Businessman Philip Chiyangwa’s quest for a maintenance downward variation with his estranged wife has taken a new twist.

Chiyangwa, who sired two children aged 14 and 8 with Pamela Rusere, was ordered to pay $40 000 per month, sometime in 2020.

In addition, he was ordered to pay R49 000 directly to a school in South Africa, for the children’s education.

However, in April 2021, the businessman obtained a default judgment that varied the maintenance from $40 000 to $8 000.

Rusere noted an appeal at the High Court where a judgment dismissing the downward variation was handed down in her favour by Justices Pisirayi Kwenda and Emilia Muchawa.

Chiyangwa was in default when the decision was made.

Through his lawyers, the businessman filed an application for rescission of the judgment on December 10, under HC 7097/21.

On the same day, Chiyangwa filed an urgent chamber application for stay of execution pending the outcome of the application for rescission.

The lawyers claimed the order, in favour of Rusere, was granted in error.

“The patent error alleged by Chiyangwa is that the court, after allowing the appeal against the dismissal of the application for rescission of a default judgment and setting aside the default judgment, should not have gone on to dismiss the application for downwards variation of maintenance.

“That should have been dealt with on the merits in the Magistrates’ Court,” Chiyangwa argued.

In his ruling, Justice Rodgers Manyangadze said:

Daring Copper Thieves Vandalise State House Cables

By A Correspondent- Daring copper cable thieves recently cut electricity cables to State House in Bulawayo as the city witnesses a surge in vandalism cases.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the development yesterday.

“I can confirm that we are receiving an increase in the number of reports of copper cable theft.

“We are appealing to members of the public to assist police with information that might lead to the arrest of the suspects,” Ncube said.

“Theft of cables are affecting all operations in the city.

“Some have affected police stations, including the State House.

“On January 20, we received a report of theft of 225m x 35mm copper cables in the Donnington area, and another one of 1 400m x25mm of overhead copper cable conductors in Sauerstown and Hillside on Sunday.”

Ncube said other areas affected were Njube and Pumula.

“We receive such reports on a daily basis,” Ncube said.

Zesa spokesperson George Manyaya recently said that the power utility required over US$6 million to replace stolen equipment.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage secretary Aaron Nhepera last year told Parliament that a Copper Control Amendment Bill would be crafted to impose a mandatory 10-year jail term for vandalism of cables.-newsday

Mwonzora Planning To Recall Thokozani Khupe

The leadership wrangle between MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora and his deputy Thokozani Khupe has escalated amid plans to recall her from Parliament after she declared an official split last week.

Khupe was suspended by Mwonzora last Thursday, before she in turn announced that the latter had fired himself from the party after claiming leadership of the MDC Alliance.

Mwonzora also declared that he would contest the March 26 by-elections under the name MDC Alliance, a move viewed as a ploy to confuse former MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa’s supporters.

Chamisa has since changed the name of the party to Citizens Coalition for Change.

Mwonzora’s spokesperson Lloyd Damba yesterday confirmed the plans to recall Khupe from Parliament where she is a proportional representation MP.

“There is nothing in the MDC-T called an official proclamation of a split.

“That alone as she is accusing Mwonzora of having flouted the constitution, she herself has done the same by announcing an official proclamation of a split when there is no such clause in the MDC-T constitution.

“Khupe is in Parliament because of the MDC Alliance brand. We are going to recall her, and she is going to court. We are going to smoke the enemy out,” Damba said.

Khupe’s spokesperson Ntando Ndlovu said his boss was unfazed by Mwonzora’s threat to recall her from Parliament.

He said Mwonzora no longer had jurisdiction to recall Khupe.

“Douglas Mwonzora dismissed himself from MDC-T after writing to Zec on the 3rd of January informing it that he has formed a new party called MDC Alliance,” Ndlovu said.

“It, therefore, follows that Mwonzora doesn’t have any legal authority to recall anyone from Parliament.

“We implore Parliament and State institutions to exercise impartiality in discharging their duties by making sure that one faction cannot recall legislators who belong to another faction,” he said.

ZUPCO Employees Stage Strike Over Delays In Salary Payment

Some employees of Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) staged a strike in Masvingo on Monday due to delays in being paid their salaries since last month.

Many commuters had to walk to and from town, braving heavy rains in the process, while some opted for illegal taxis and kombis which are not under the Zupco franchise and have been engaging in a cat and mouse relationship with the police, who are trying to curb mshika-shika.

A few kombis and buses had to be dispatched but failed to meet the demand especially in the morning where there was high demand for transport.

Kombi drivers who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com revealed that the company has been playing hide and seek when it comes to their remuneration.

One of the kombi drivers who spoke on condition of anonymity in fear of victimization said they haven’t received their salaries since December last year and that the management is stammers when approached.

“Today we decided not to report for duty because the company is taking us for fools. We haven’t been paid since December 14 and when we try to engage the management, they don’t give us a satisfactory answer, they always beat around the bush,” the driver said.

Zupco Masvingo Area Manager, Rashy Mazarire wasn’t reachable for comment as his mobile number went straight to voicemail until the time of publishing.

The Zupco Acting Chief Executive Officer, Everisto Madangwa was also not available to comment on the matter as he didn’t pick up calls made to his mobile number.

The parastatal which is sole licensed public transport provider in the country and is failing to cope with transport demand in the country has seen workers striking across the country over delayed salaries.

Masvingo workers downed tools a couple of times last year while Bulawayo employees also went on strike over the same issue.

Zim Man Lands Top Job At Google

Google has appointed Zimbabwean-American James Manyika, the head of McKinsey Global Institute, to be the company’s first Senior VP of Technology and Society.

The position will report to Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai and focuses on how tech affects society.

“I’m thrilled that James Manyika will be joining Google’s leadership team,” Pichai said in a statement. “He’s spent decades working at the intersection of technology and society and has advised a number of businesses, academic institutions and governments along the way.”

A Google spokesperson said Manyika’s role works on “shaping and sharing” the company’s view on the way tech affects society, the economy and the planet. His areas of focus include the future of work, sustainability and the impact of AI.

Big Tech has long faced accusations that it’s a detriment to society, and Google thinks it can address those criticisms more directly. Manyika will help explore tech’s impact on society and shape the firm’s points of view on subjects including AI, the future of work, sustainability and other areas that could make a significant difference.

Manyika has spent 28 years at McKinsey, which helps companies and governments (including tech leaders) make decisions based on economic and cultural trends like those Google hopes to address. He also serves on the boards of research institutes at Harvard, MIT, Oxford, Stanford and other top-tier schools. If anyone is likely to be aware of tech’s broader effects on the world, it’s him.

Google’s move certainly isn’t surprising. It comes as the company is facing a host of antitrust lawsuits, increasingly tougher regulations and protests over its treatment of employees. There are also claims Google and Big Tech haven’t done enough to fight misinformation and are eroding privacy. The new executive won’t necessarily adjust all of Google’s behavior, but he could provide a more informed perspective that reduces the chances of a cultural or political backlash.

UN Says Zim Roads Are The Worst In Africa

FIVE people die every day on average because of road accidents in Zimbabwe, says a review on road safety in the country.

The review provides a detailed assessment of the road safety and management capacity situation in the country, and pinpoints concrete measures to save lives.

False Start To Former Harare Mayor’s Graft Trial

By A Correspondent- The High Court trial of former Harare mayor Herbert Gomba and three council officials on graft charges failed to kick off yesterday and was deferred to March 14.

Gomba, who is being charged together with suspended town clerk Hosea Chisango, finance director Stanley Ndemera and Charles Kandemiri, was expected to stand trial before High Court judge Justice Pisirai Kwenda.

The four are accused of criminal abuse of office after they allegedly illegally sold the Mt Pleasant Golf Course.

Their lawyer Harrison Nkomo has filed a notice for an application for exception to the charges, which will now be heard on March 14.

Allegations are that in August 2019, Gomba unlawfully used his position as the mayor to offer stand number 402 Vainona Township, Harare, for sale to Hardspec Investments (Pvt) Ltd, which was being represented by Mavis Madzivanzira and Pauline Gutsa.

Gomba allegedly unlawfully instructed council officials, including Ndemera, who was acting finance director, to go and meet Mandzivanzira and Gutsa so that they could be shown the portion of stand 402 Vainona, Harare, which they wanted to buy.

Gomba allegedly told Ndemera to prepare a report recommending the outright sale of the stand.

The sale was approved by the full council of September 5, 2019, yet the sale to Hardspec Investments Pvt Ltd had been concluded the previous day.

The stand was sold for $23 923 340 yet Mt Pleasant Sports Club was quoted US$2,3 million for the same stand.

It is alleged Chisango and Kandemiri played a part in the sale of this stand.

Pregnant Women Turn To Herbalists For Safe Easy Births

By A Correspondent- Two daughters. Long, painful labours. Several miscarriages.

For Soko, a hairdresser in her late 30s, the quest for a son and a safe, easy birth led her to seek professional help – from a herbalist.

Inside a private house in Chitungwiza, 25km south of central Harare, she paid US$15 for a consultation with Sikhonzani Shoko and a package of “kuvhura masuwo,” the Shona term for traditional childbirth medicine ranging from herbal tea to elephant dung.

“There were no stitches, no operation and no complications,” she says, after giving birth to a healthy boy.

While satisfied, Soko remains discreet about her experience – she asks to be identified by her totem “monkey,” her clan’s emblem – because she belongs to a Pentecostal church opposed to traditional healers.

Religious restrictions and the medical community’s increasingly vocal warnings that kuvhura masuwo is connected to the country’s high infant and maternal mortality rates have slowed Shoko’s sales in recent years. But, she says, she still gets plenty of customers.

An estimated 70% of women across Zimbabwe use kuvhura masuwo, according to research published in 2019 by Clinics in Mother and Child Health, an international academic journal.

In Harare, a survey of 248 women in public maternity clinics found that 52% had used some form of traditional medicine.

Medical providers say usage among urban, professional women is under-reported, however – making it difficult to combat a practice that endangers thousands of lives each year.

“Most of them get the herbs from elderly women in their family who sternly warn them not to divulge the information to health care workers,” says Emmanuel Mahlangu, a trained midwife for 14 years who previously led the Zimbabwe Confederation of Midwives.

Zimbabwean women may use more than a dozen kinds of kuvhura masuwo during pregnancy, including elephant dung soaked in water, cooking oil, moringa leaves, sand and water from spiritual shrines.

As their due date approaches, some also try squatting over burning herbs to ensure a shorter labour.

“Childbirth is natural, the body prepares itself and does most of the work, there is no need to use these herbs,” Mahlangu says but adds, “Beliefs are stubborn.”

They can also be fatal. According to World Bank data, Zimbabwe ranks 34th for infant mortality and 23rd for maternal mortality rates.

Nearly one-fourth of women give birth outside formal health care settings, increasing their risk of obstetric fistula, a serious injury that almost always results in stillbirth, according to a 2021 Amnesty International report.

One factor is the rise of Apostolic sects – many of which condemn modern medicine – that account for one-fourth of Zimbabwe’s population, according to a 2019 survey conducted by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency and the United Nations Children’s Fund, or Unicef. Kuvhura masuwo is another.

“Using these herbs often causes adverse pregnancy outcomes, as they stimulate the uterus in an unnatural way, causing precipitate labour,” says Maxwell Chimhina, an obstetrician and gynaecologist in Zimbabwe for more than 10 years.

Risks for the baby can include brain damage from restricted flow of oxygen. For the mother, they include excessive tears, haemorrhaging and permanent bladder damage.

Shoko, a healer for more than 40 years, says doctors, midwives and women who blame kuvhura masuwo for childbirth complications haven’t studied or used the techniques properly.

“How were women giving birth before modern science? These traditional herbs were always used, and their efficacy has been proven for several generations,” she says.

One small study, conducted in 2020 at the University of Zimbabwe, explored the effects on pregnant rats of elephant dung and the herb fadogia ancylantha, treatments commonly used as kuvhura masuwo.

Researchers reported that dung did induce labour, but the herb slowed contractions – a dangerous complication connected to most cases of excessive bleeding, according to a 2020 medical study by Mpilo Central Hospital in the City of Bulawayo, 439km from Harare, the capital.

More women have also begun publicly sharing disappointing experiences with kuvhura masuwo, although in doing so they risk stigma from both sides.

Esnath Manhende (24), from Gweru, a city 277km southwest of Harare, says she obediently drank a cup of warm water, two tablespoons of cooking oil and a special herbal tea every day of her pregnancy to ensure a smooth delivery. She still had a long, painful labour and required stitches.

“I did not see the use of using all the things I used,” she says, adding that she is grateful she and the baby survived and vows never to use kuvhura masuwo again.

“Our mothers taught us this. I don’t think it helps.”

White Ribbon Alliance, a global health organisation that works with hospitals and midwives, counsels Zimbabweans on healthy pregnancies.

Since 2012, the national chapter has worked with more than 5 000 women in Harare, Bulawayo and Kwekwe.

In WhatsApp groups with nursing and pregnant women, kuvhura masuwo dominates the conversations, says Geraldine Nyaku, the organisation’s national co-ordinator.

Even among urban, professional women seeking hospital births, she says, traditional customs persist due to family pressure from older generations of women. “We are taught to respect our elders.”

Traditional healers and medical providers do agree on two points: kuvhura masuwo is not going away, and more research should be done to determine which versions are more beneficial – or less harmful. “We should work together,” Shoko says. “It’s not a tug of war.”

Delta Responds To Case Of Three Condoms Found In Scud

Zivhu Breaks Silence On Quiting Zanu PF

By- Fired former Chivi South legislator Killer Zivhu yesterday said he would not be contesting the March 26 by-elections as an independent candidate.
Zivhu was expelled from Zanu PF in June 2020 after he called for dialogue between President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.
He told NewsDay yesterday that he was not contesting because he had promised Mnangagwa that he would not do so.
Zivhu claimed that he had been supporting Zanu PF for the past 22 years, hence it was difficult for him to renounce the ideologies of the ruling party even if he was expelled.
“I made a pledge to the President ED (Emmerson Mnangagwa) that I am not going to stand as an independent” he said.
“It is not true that I will contest as an independent. I am not even in Chivi, I am in Harare. I will not even go to Chivi. I will abide by my promise to ED and continue supporting him.
“I started working with Zanu PF and I have supported the party so much since 1995 through donations and pledges. I am a principled person. I have been preaching the Zanu PF ideology for over 22 years.”
Added Zivhu: “Now that I have a misunderstanding with my fellow comrades within the party, it does not mean that I should then renounce the same ideologies. I will continue supporting Zanu PF although I was fired. Take this as an example, there are some people who support Manchester United, but they have never been to England, nor do they have the cards from the team. Some support Dynamos, but have never been to Harare that is the nature of die-hard supporters. It’s in the blood.”
Zivhu served as a Zanu PF councillor from 2000 to 2017 before he won the Chivhu South parliamentary seat in the 2018 elections.

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | Finally Nelson Chamisa has announced a new party called the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

The party, which would identify itself with colour yellow, was launched at a press conference in Harare on Monday afternoon.

Dr Masimba Mavaza

Chamisa said the party was dumping the MDC identity altogether, including the symbols. He said the party would vigilantly defend the people’s vote in 2023.

“We won’t allow ZEC to play and join the other team,” he said.

Chamisa took a swipe at President Emmerson Mnangagwa saying: “Mnangagwa has never won any election; that is why he went to the court.”

“But the problem is that when you steal an election you become an illegitimate president and an illegitimate president cannot fix the economy,” he said.

The excitement is surely short lived as Chamisa will see first hand the lightning coming from mighty Mnangagwa.

Again Chamisa disappoints as he is a master of disappointment. Chamisa had coppied a pressure group from Sweden called Citizens’ Coalition, officially known as Citizens’ Future until 2017, is a right-wing political party in Sweden that was founded in 2014. The party considers itself liberal-conservative and green conservative, while observers described it as a right-wing populist party critic of immigration and conservative.

This is a party which is Xenophobic and tribalistic by nature. It is therefore surprising how Chamisa and those big pot bellied members settle for a name from a party with values which are questionable.

To show the lack of seriousness Chamisa tells his supporters thst his party is temporal.

A coalition is a group formed when two or more people, factions, states, political parties, militaries, or other parties agree to work together, temporarily, in a partnership to achieve a common goal. The word coalition connotes a coming together to achieve a goal albeit s temporal one. A coalition government is a temporal government and formed jointly by more than one political party. Parties may decide to form a coalition government if there is a hung parliament where no single party has a clear working majority.

So the party has not escaped from the ghost of the MDC. Chamisa presents a fragile coalition with power hungry party members like Biti and Job Sikhala. The problem of power struggle which destroyed MDC is the one preserved and protected by Chamisa in CCC.

What is lacking and visibly missing in between the shoulders of the MDC planning team is the container which carries the brains many call it head. If this team was serious they would have come up with a party not a coalition.

A coalition depends on understanding between the parties. If there is no understanding, the party becomes weak. Chamisa knows that Biti is eyeing his seat and then he gave this new group a fragile name. The only way a coalition party would work is if they have a strong leader who can bring all parties together and arrive at a consensus. If the leader is too strong, he may try to dominate causing cracks. If the leader is too weak, he cannot control all the members of the coalition making a weak party. Chamisa has simply fragged MDC in different name with all its problems.

Most coalition parties are unstable because they are formed by unlike parties. Without cohesion, they are at risk of falling at any time. This can cause imbalance. One small party can blackmail the big tent by threatening to pull it down and thus make the party unstable. Coalition parties when made by opposing parties may not be able to come up with a consensus on policies like on economy. This can affect governance. Imagine Killer Zivhu Jonathan Moyo Job Sikhala Biti and Ngarivhume pulling then the coalition apart. Will it stand at all. When regional party or parties are dominant, they demand more favors/funds for their states at the expense of others. The growth of regionalism can affect nationalist interests.

The new Coalition which is believed to be a party can not stand and soon will be breaking into CCC Sikhala or Biti.

We need to understand fully that coalition, in politics and international relations, is a group of actors that coordinate their behaviour in a limited and temporary fashion to achieve a common goal. Once the goal is achieved the coalition flops.

Either way it flops. That is if its not able to achieve it flops never the less.

So Chamisa has come up with a party destined to flop because it is not a party it is a coalition. It has no constitution regardless of many lawyers being members of the flopping over subscribed coalition.
What the excited citizens do not know is the fact that the whole thing is found in a temporal basis. As a form of goal-oriented political cooperation, a coalition can be contrasted with an alliance and a network.

An alliance suggests a robust partnership of at least medium-term duration, as compared with the more fleeting coalition. Alternatively, a network is a more informal but potentially broader grouping, suggesting more ad hoc cooperation than in a coalition but over a wider array of concerns. In coalitions, alliances, and networks, the actors involved—whether states in wartime, political parties in government, or nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in political movements—each retain their distinctive identity and interests, but the purpose of collaboration across all three is ultimately the same: to aggregate actors’ strengths to achieve some shared goal that none could achieve individually. The coalition is, however, the most ephemeral of the three.

In Short Chamisa has simply presented a group and not a political party. Is this ignorance or the Jecha is self harming. Bearing in mind that coalition party in a parliamentary government, body of advisors that is formed when different political parties choose to cooperate in the administration and regulation of a country or community.

Coalition governments usually are a temporary alliance, being formed when no single political party gains a clear majority and competing parties instead negotiate to work together. Such a situation is likely to occur during a period of crisis, such as during a war, or in response to political breakdown. Members of all parties in a coalition government are appointed to a cabinet. So what is happening to Chamisa and his colleagues. Why would Chamisa chose an Unstable party, which is Time consuming process of decision making.

A coalition is known to Sometimes ignore National interest as it is kept aside for accomplishing regional interest. In a coalition Generally appeasement policies are considered rather developmental policy.

Before those who were excited got excited they must realise that a coalition can lack clear objectives, or be difficult to agree common objectives. This is not what you want. Voters should know that Forming and managing a coalition can be a very time-consuming and bureaucratic process that can take away time from working directly on campaign issues and organizational tasks.

A coalition May be dominated by one powerful organization. Power is not always distributed equally among members; larger or richer organizations can have more say in decisions.

The coalition May require you to compromise your position on issues or tactics. Shared decision-making can be slow and may paralyze progress.

This can often be constrained by a lack of resources.

It is Potential for donor interference (e.g. a donor is interested in funding certain activities but there is a danger of planning activities only because you know you can get the funds).

You may not always get credit for your work. Sometimes the coalition as a whole gets recognition rather than individual members. Or certain members get or claim more recognition than others, causing conflict and resentment.

If the coalition process breaks down it can harm everyone’s advocacy by damaging members’ credibility.
Coalition activities can be difficult to monitor and evaluate.
It is therefore sad that Chamisa once again has poured sand in his own rice. Is it calculated to discredit the elections. Nothing is correct with the coalition leader Chamisa.

What You Need To Know About Sexual Exploitation

Mapeza Contract Expires

Norman Mapeza is no longer the head coach of the Warriors following the expiration of his contract.

Mapeza, who is fully employed by FC Platinum, was working with national team on an interim basis since September last year, and his contract was extended to cover the Afcon 2021 finals.

The gaffer came in to fill the void left by the sacking of under-performing Croatian coach, Zdravko Logarusic.

ZIFA’s acting head of secretariat, Xolisani Gwesela, confirmed the expiry of Mapeza’s contract to The Herald.

“Mapeza’s contract was for this tournament,” Gwesela said. “It was an interim arrangement that was made between him and ZIFA and I can confirm the contract ended at the tournament.

“However, it might sound too early now for me to comment further. We will advise the nation of the way forward at the appropriate time.”

Other members of the technical team – assistants Taurayi Mangwiro, Mandla Mpofu and goalkeepers’ trainer Energy Murambadoro – are also set to return to club business after the expiry their contracts.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Eriksen Returns To EPL

Christian Eriksen is closing in on returning to the English Premier League after Brentford agreed terms with the Denmark international.

The former Tottenham forward has been offered a six-month contract with the option to extend it for a further year. However, the deal hinges on the 29-year-old completing his medical.

Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s European Championship game against Finland on June 12 and has an ICD (implantable cardioverter-defibrillator) fitted to his heart.

The situation means the player will have to go through a more complicated medical process and pass the tests before he can sign the contract.

Brentford will need to assign a sports cardiologist, who will issue a report which the FA would review before giving the go-ahead for the registration of the forward.

Meanwhile, the English club is in no rush to sign him before the January 31 transfer deadline given he is currently a free agent.

Eriksen’s Inter Milan contract was terminated last year due to the fact that it’s illegal to play professional sport in Italy with an ICD fitted to the heart.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Congolese Defender In Age Cheating Storm

Congolese defender Chancel Mbemba has been caught in an age-cheating storm again and now faces sacking from his Portuguese club Porto.

An investigation in the issue revealed that the player has four different birth dates with different clubs and country.

Mbemba reportedly changed his age while he was completing a move from DRC to Belgian side Anderlecht in 2012.

The debate over his age was temporarily quashed when he took bone tests upon signing for Newcastle which claimed he was actually born in 1994, the year he maintained he was born in.

But according to Portuguese outlet, Corriero de Manha, as cited by Daily Mail, new evidence has emerged and Porto are now considering to release the DRC international at the end of his current contract in June.

AC Milan are also reportedly keen on signing Mbemba this year, but may now be put off by the centre-back’s now-inflated age.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Super Eagles Bow Out Of AFCON Tournament

Nigeria have been eliminated from the African Cup of Nations after a shock 1-0 defeat to Tunisia in Sunday’s last 16 match in the Cameroonian port city of Garoua.

Tunisian playmaker Youssef Msakni’s long-range shot at the 47th minute was enough to secure passage to the quarter-finals for the Eagles of Carthage.

Nigeria, the only team to have won all three of its group stage games, might have been able to stage a comeback had it not been for Alex Iwobi’s red card at the 66th minute.

Tunisia, who lost twice in the group stage and only went through as one of the best third-place teams, closed Nigeria down in a cagey game in Garoua on the first day of the knockout stage.

“We allowed them to get a foothold in the game,” said Nigeria’s Joe Aribo. “Can’t take anything away from them, but we should have been better.”

Tunisia got the job done without coach Mondher Kebaier, who was isolating in his hotel room instead of standing on the sidelines after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Tunisia will play Burkina Faso in the quarterfinals.- Al Jazeera

MDC Alliance Solidarity Message To Suffering Teachers

COMMUNIQUE ON 22/01/2022 NATIONAL COUNCIL MEETING

On the 22nd of January 2022, the National Council of the MDC Alliance met in accordance with the party’s constitution. The National Council received the reports of the President and the Secretary-General. The following matters were deliberated upon:

Governance and Human Rights Crisis

  1. Economic and political environment – The people’s leadership noted the deteriorating state of the economy which has led to eroded purchasing power for citizens, rising cost of living, a remuneration crisis for civil servants especially teachers and doctors, the breakdown of national infrastructure, the load shedding crisis and the decrepit state of our buses which are leaking from their roofs. We call for the adoption of pro-people policies as set out in detail in our SMART Alternative Policy Framework.
  2. Education Crisis: We call for the immediate re-opening of schools with adequate COVID19 safeguards. The right to education must be respected. Education is the bedrock of any successful nation and we remain deeply concerned by the neglect of this critical sector by Mr Mnangagwa ‘s anti-people regime. We stand in firm solidarity with teachers who were arrested for demanding a living wage. Under a People’s Government, the respect of the teaching profession will be restored.
  3. Persecution of John Mupanduki: We demand an end to the continued persecution of John Mupanduki who was abducted on the 7′ of January 2022. Despite the fact that he made a police report, no investigations have been conducted by the Zimbabwe Republic Police. Instead, he has been brought before the courts on flimsy, baseless charges. We call for an Independent inquiry into his ordeal and for the criminal charges to be dropped. This pattern of conduct is similar to what we saw with the MDC Trio. There ought to be no space for the abuse of citizens in a constitutional democracy.

Zimbabwe Action For Change Agenda 2022

  1. Citicens’Action for Change: In line with the tradition of the people’s movement which commenced in 2019, the party sets the agenda for the nation in January of every year. The people’s leadership formally tabled and adopted Agenda 2022 which shall be announced in due course by the People’s President, Adv Nelson Chamisa, in line with our annual tradition. We shall shortly communicate the date and time of this important address.
  2. Election Preparedness: The people’s Council received the report of the Election Directorate on voter registration, conditions for free and fair elections and candidate selection processes. The people’s leadership noted that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) continues to act contrary to its constitutional imperatives to conduct voter registration and to conduct transparent verifiable elections.

While the movement has launched an intensive voter registration program in all provinces, we call upon ZEC to ensure more voter registration centres are available. We call for an urgent resolution of the national identity document crisis. The National Council further received a report from the Election Directorate on the progress of the community candidate selection process that is currently underway in all provinces for all wards and constituencies where by-elections shall take place.

The people’s leadership emphasized the need to return the citizen to the centre of decision-making at all levels.

  1. Action on Reforms: We reiterate our demand for electoral reforms including entrenching the right to vote, particularly the diaspora vote for all citizens.

We demand a credible voters’ roll, security of polling material, security of the vote and the voter, establishing transitional mechanisms so that there is a smooth transfer of power pursuant to free and fair elections, the introduction of a credible results management system and media reforms. As highlighted in our PRICE (Principles [or Reliable Inclusive and Credible Elections in Zimbabwe) document, we further call [or the alignment of the Electoral Act to the Constitution, the demilitarization of the ZEC secretariat and a transparent census and delimitation process.

  1. Behold the New: There was extensive deliberation on the need to give birth to the new in line with the expectations and clarion call from the citizens. The people’s leadership is charting a new course that will lead to transformation and ethical leadership for the nation.

Ex-Police Officer Exonerates T Freddy Over Rape Claims

By A Correspondent| A fomer Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Inspector Gibson Jaji has exonerated
rape accused Goodness and Mercy Ministries founder Prophet T Freddy becoming the second witness to clear the popular preacher.

T Freddy is currently in court facing charges of raping ZBC presenter Rutendo Makuti.

Jaji was part of police officers who were called at Chief Chikwaka when the traditional leader tried to solve the popular prophet and Makuti’s relationship dispute.

The former police officer said he did not see any reason for Freddy’s arrest as the two had consensual sex.

“As a seasoned police officer and from my own assessment I did not see any reason to arrest there was not report .I advised the complainant to report but she said she was not going to report,” he said.

Jaji said he further advised the complainant to report elsewhere if she was not comfortable to report at Juru Police Station but that did not happen.

Jaji who was being cross-examined by T Freddy’s defense counsel Everson Chatambudza and Jivas Mudimu said not at any point did the prophet admitted to the rape claims by the complainant.

He said the affidavit signed at Chief Chikwaka’s homestead by the prophet was not an admission of rape.

WHY SHOULD YOU VOTE ZANU PF IN THESE BY-ELECTIONS

BY DR MASIMBA MAVAZA | My thing is on the ZANU PF to win this March’s By-elections for the simple reason that they have remained resolute in the face of trouble. They have been tested in fire and came out stronger. They have listened to the people and acted on their information. They even listened to Chief Murinye and any other constructive voice which cut through the peace and shook them to action.

Dr Masimba Mavaza

As we head into the month of the By- elections the race seems to be narrowing. Just like the 2018 election there are various estimates of who will win what but the polls appear to suggest a ZANU PF victory becoming far more likely than we would have imagined some weeks ago.
Looking at all we have seen in the MDCC one would have a few bonds on the ruling party to squeeze past the all-important majority and increase the majority they are enjoying now and retain control of the country. The reason one will be so bullish about the prospects of ZANU PF is not down to its leadership, or its policies. Many have no no clue about how any of those stack up.We believe ZANU PF will win a majority in March because they are better at marketing and have succeeded in keeping their promises half way through the mandate and ZANU PF has took marketing very seriously,Specifically, digital marketing. More specifically, Facebook advertising. And even more specifically, because the party has remained united in the face of very strong dividing currency.
We might want to ask a bigger question about disunity, one we have been carrying around since time and time of time. Forgive this indulgence, we need to get this off our chests.
Citizens will know that politicians intone with all the sobriety of an undertaker that “disunity is death”. People in politics tend to amplify that line dutifully, not because they are ciphers, but because it appeared to be true – one of those truisms so true it required no rebuttal.
But now, we not so sure, because Zimbabwean voters will not re-elect a party that had recalled through fifty members of parliament in only two years. Rather than harbouring a grudge about political instability being out and proud, a majority of voters will not look past the cycles of revenge tragedy perpetrated in full public view.
Zimbabwe has seen that its not only MPS who have suffered even councillors and mayors. The nation was treated to a circus of the most vindictive nature and shown how the personalisation of a political party becomes a big problem for the nation at large.
Zimbabwean voters see divided political parties as less able to make sensible or coherent policies. It is often said that ‘divided parties lose elections’, with the experience of the MDC A-Z cited as supporting evidence. perceptions of party disunity does indeed play a role in how voters assess the competency of parties.
Party members often disagree with their leadership and with themselves. Disagreement is a persistent phenomenon.
In response to opposition disagreement, opposition parties and the media often paint a picture of fractured parties.
MDC has cried about electoral reforms yet they had never as a party raise it in parliament. They had never sponsored an article to address the reforms. This hypocrisy by MDC of not fighting for reforms in parliament but on to Britain and America is wrong” and that other options would be more “honest” to members of their own party and tell them that our electoral system is good but not whole. They must fight this in parliament thats what they are elected to do. Unfortunately they only managed to recall each other there by showing their disunity to the people.
The consequences of this behaviour is to alienate the voters and this why in March the MDC A-Z will pay heavily for their disunity. Traditional theories propose motives for party members to diverge from electoral incentives. From this perspective, in countries with election rules that encourage candidates to cultivate a personal reputation, MPs face strong incentives to deviate from the party’s line and in this case they paid by being recalled.
The MDC will chose to go against its voters in times of hardships.
MDC has performed very well is the lessons of disunity and breaking up. This started with Tsvangirai himself.
*MDC made very interesting News Headlines Since 2005 which affected the quality of the opposition in Zimbabwe.
In 2005 after dictatorial tendencies were raised against Tsvangirai in 2005 Tsvangirai suspends Welshman Ncube in a turn of events Welshman Ncube fires Tsvangirai from MDC in retaliations. This is repeated again in Khupe and Mwonzora circus. Mwonzora new Khupe is not a team player and was motivated by tribalism he joined her anyway. In the same year of circus in MDC Tsvangirai suspends Mangoma after he had sent his vampires the vanguard to beat Mangoma up before suspending him.
Without breaking his record of leading a disunited party
Tsvangirai suspends Biti. Then the circus was in full swing. Tsvangirai then fires Job Sikhala who responded by forming MDC 99.
Then as they say the fish rots from the head. Tsvangirai started firing at will using his manhood and his political power ending up having fired five wives within two years if his wife’s death and fired several founding members of the MDC. With Tsvangirai the sharp shooter in his death bed he was in turn quietly fired by Chamisa who took over his wife and the party. His first meaningful contribution to the party Chamisa fires Khupe and as a custom and a ritual in MDC circus Khupe in turn Suspends Chamisa.
The circus continued with
Mwonzora Firing Chamisa and Chamisa keeping the culture and tradition on Chamisa Fires Mwonzora. Then the disunity continues Mwonzora fires Khupe and Khupe goes on to fire Mwonzora. The in the breaking up spirit MDC Zimbabwe is launched. Now we have MDC Z
Tsvangirai loses MDC even in death. Tsvangirai created MDC T Job Sikhaka created MDC 99 Welshmen formed MDC N and
Biti formed MDC B which Created MDC Renewal.

It was Tsvangirai who Created MDC Alliance bringing back the political prostitutes. Then
Chamisa inherits MDC Alliance
and Mwonzora Is MDC Alliance leader. Then this week
Khupe Creates MDC T Z and Khupe Fires Mwonzora who in turn fires Khupe.

Seriously this merry go round has caused excessive dizziness in some innocent blind followers
Not even one headline about people’s welfare it’s only about snooking & smoking each other *OUT* -*purging after purging Can any straight thinking person vote MDC in these coming by elections.
Chamisa is not changing the name and the name fight is another side attraction.
Can any person thinking straight vote for this circus.

Can MDC problems be called Democratic Disunity Rhetorical Tribalism in MDC addresses that while attention has recently and rightly been paid to the tribal bifurcation the Democratic movement is not moving at all.
A central claim of democratic theory is that democracy induces governments to be responsive to the preferences of the people. Political parties organize politics in every modern democracy, and some observers claim that parties are what induce democracies to be responsive. Yet, according to others, parties give voice to extremists and reduce the responsiveness of governments to the citizenry.

No amount of spin will change the fact that it has taken Chamisa and company two years to accept the reality the party needed a new name! No wonder MDC failed to implement even one reform during the GNU. MDC leaders’ indecisiveness made them absolutely certain to forget about the reforms they only talk about them each time they lose elections. Parties are organizations with diverse memberships that broadly hope to collectively control office. The general nature of this goal provides ample opportunities and incentives for disagreement over even relatively simple aspects of the party’s policy or strategy. Furthermore, competing factions and activists often seek to draw the party leadership in opposing directions.
Diversity of opinion within parties does not assure that the public is aware of these divisions. Serious disagreements only surface under rare circumstances. A veneer of ideological unity gives the appearance that parties are fully ideologically coherent organizations.
Party leaders actively cultivate an appearance of unity. They demand that members stick to the party’s stated position. Parties in the opposition have the luxury of picking and choosing their battles. When a party publicly divides, it is often suggested that these disagreements embarrass the parties’ leadership because the party is incapable of articulating a common, agreed upon policy on an issue. The logic follows that it is hard to consider a party a competent executer of policy on an issue when members cannot form a consensus position. Extending this approach, We add that upon perceiving parties as internally divided, voters respond by downgrading their perceptions of parties’ policy competence.
Individuals respond to new information based on their pre-established beliefs.Likewise, voters which consider themselves ideologically close to a party may use a cue such as public disagreement to establish whether a party will be capable of following through with their statements.
One wonders whether we are now so saturated in conflict that people in politics trying to take one another out just seems normal. democracies, has been picked up and set down in a different place, a place where disunity, rather than “death”, has become what is expected in public life.
Technology has pushed us into tribes. Our shared reality, rather than being a commons, is increasingly animated by fealty rather than agreed facts and a spirit of inquiry. Conflict has become the pulse and the respiration of our harried and hyperconnected lives but in MDC it has presented an ugly face of politics. We think it is at least possible that collective expectations have bent to that new normal.

If you can not unite your party how can you unite a ward a town and indeed a country.

Dozens Of Farm Workers Jobless As Obert Mpofu Defies Court Order

By A Correspondent- Dozens of workers at Esidakeni Farm, located about 67km from Bulawayo, are said to have lost their jobs after Zanu-PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu defied a court order to vacate the farm.

Mpofu has allegedly deployed armed guards to block the owners from accessing the farm.

He has also allegedly locked out workers at the farm owned by scientist Zephaniah Dhlamini, miner Charles Moyo and human rights defender Siphosami Malunga, who is the executive director for the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa.

Over 150 workers, permanent and casual, have reportedly lost their jobs and have become homeless since Mpofu’s takeover.

“When he (Mpofu) moved onto the farm in early December, he found us actively farming. We were harvesting onion which we had grown on 4ha. We managed to harvest about 50 tonnes of saleable onions and 30 tonnes small onions that we intended to replant as sets on 2ha this January. About 1,5ha of onion could not be removed from the fields to the sheds. I am sure it’s all rotten from the heavy rains in the past weeks,” Dhlamini told NewsDay yesterday.

“We were also in the process of harvesting butternut. About 20 tonnes could not be harvested and have been stolen by people or damaged by wild pigs. We had also transplanted over 60 000 cabbages which we intended to sell in December and January when the prices are at their highest. As we speak, these cabbages are rotting in the fields.

“Obert found us with a workforce of 45 permanent workers.”

Mpofu has reportedly chased away the workers, including the foreman and women supervisors from the 554-hectare farm.

Yesterday, Mpofu refused to comment on the matter.

“Have you been sent? Don’t be silly. I’m not going to talk about that issue,” Mpofu said.

But Dhlamini insisted that Mpofu had evicted workers from their quarters, adding that the employees had lost their sources of income.

“We paid our casual workers US$5 per day. All these people are now unemployed. We have about 100 beef cattle on the farm and 20 goats, they have not been dipped or received scheduled vaccinations and dosing as we are denied access to the farm,” he said.

“We also had over 200 free range chickens, we don’t know their status. We left our belongings and 20 tonnes of maize in the main farm house. We had locked the farm house and its gates.”

In December, the Bulawayo High Court granted an application by farm owners for the eviction of Mpofu and Dumisani Madzivanyati, pending a decision of the same court on the main application in which they are challenging a government decision to list the farm for compulsory acquisition.

Madzivanyati is a lecturer at the National University of Science and Technology.

Mpofu then appealed against the ruling, but Malunga and his partners went back to the High Court to seek his eviction pending the outcome of his appeal.

The application is yet to be set down for hearing.

Zim Cricketer Admits To Taking Cocaine, ‘Spot Fixing’ Cut

Zimbabwean batter Brendan Taylor is facing a ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after admitting he received a $15,000 (about R226,000) “deposit” for spot-fixing, though he said he was blackmailed and never went through with the arrangement.

Taylor said he was coerced into accepting the money from an Indian businessman in October 2019 and it took him four months to report the incident to the ICC anti-corruption unit because he feared for his safety.

Taylor travelled to India to discuss the launch of a new T20 competition in Zimbabwe with the promise of $15,000 as payment.

“We had drinks and during the course of the evening they openly offered me cocaine, which they themselves engaged in. I foolishly took the bait,” Taylor said in a statement released via his Twitter account on Monday.

“The next morning the same men stormed into my hotel room and showed me a video taken of me the night before doing cocaine and told me that if I did not spot-fix at international matches for them the video would be released to the public.”

Taylor said he was handed $15,000 as a deposit and promised he would receive another $20,000 (about R302,000) when the job was complete.”

“I would like to place on record that I have never been involved in any form of match-fixing. I may be many things, but I am not a cheat,” he said.

“That being said, the ICC are taking the decision to impose a multiyear ban on my international cricketing career. I humbly accept this decision.”

Taylor added he would check into a rehabilitation facility on Tuesday to treat his substance abuse.

The ICC and Zimbabwe Cricket have not responded to requests for comment.

The 35-year-old Taylor, who played for Zimbabwe in 34 Tests, 205 ODIs and 45 T20s, retired from international cricket in September.

Former Zimbabwe all-rounder and coach Heath Streak was banned by the ICC for eight years last April for his role in revealing inside information which could be used for betting purposes.

Innscor Africa Limited Case Reserved

By A Correspondent- Bulawayo Labour Court judge Mercy Moya-Matshanga on Thursday reserved judgment for the second time in the case of Innscor Africa Limited and Innscor Africa Bread Company Zimbabwe former southern region sales and marketing manager Paul Chimboya, who is suing the company for US$308 000 damages following his dismissal in 2017.

The first time that the judge reserved judgment on the same case was on November 26 last year following submission by both parties in court.

Chimboya recently received notification to attend a hearing at the labour court on January 20.

“You are hereby notified that the matter concerning Chimboya vs Innscor Africa Ltd … to which you are party … shall be heard before the Labour Court … on January 20 at 9am. If as a party you fail to attend the hearing at the time and place notified, the hearing may proceed without you to the possible detriment of your interests,” the notice reads.

Chimboya’s lawyers from Chikwangwani Tapi Attorneys wrote a letter dated January 14 to the Registrar of the Labour Court contesting the notification.

“We refer specifically to the notice received … on January 13 for hearing on January 20. On the last hearing date … in November 26, 2021, … both parties presented their arguments and judgment was reserved on the basis that the respondents were to file a payslip showing that applicant was paid wages for the month of December 2017,” the letter reads.

“After the … payslip was served on us, we have been awaiting the judgment. We are hereby seeking clarification on whether or not the notice of set down … was made in error. If it was not made in error, we seek to clarify on what the court requires us to address on it.   It is our kind request that we receive a response by Tuesday January 18 to enable us to adequately prepare for the hearing.”

In response to Chimboya’s letter, the Deputy Registrar of the Labour Court, one C Kaneta said: “The notice of set down date was not sent erroneously. The judge seeks clarity on the points in limine (preliminary points) raised regarding the issue of applicant’s salary.”

After submission on Thursday, Moya-Matshanga then reserved judgment indefinitely.

The matter had been brought back to court after a year of deadlock on out-of-court settlement negotiations.

Chimboya was fired on December 27, 2017 on allegations of sabotaging the company following the circulation of a letter deemed offensive to the firm.

In 2020, the parties engaged in negotiations for out-of-court settlement after agreeing on the removal of the case from the court roll.

During the out-of-court settlement, the company offered to pay Chimbayo $972 000 as an out of court settlement against his claim of US$308 000.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that Chimboya should be reinstated to his position with all benefits.

It also said that if reinstatement was not possible, the company should pay him damages.

Bombshell: Mliswa Exposes July Moyo

1/Good morning Zim!Good morning (dis)Hon. Minister July Moyo! Let’s go back to 2019.. In 2019, The Dutch Embassy @NLinZimbabwe donated pumping equipment for the Darwendale Pump station. We’re grateful for their initiative, thank you. The date 21/3/2019 is important, take note

2/ However, and this is where it gets juicy… Our Govt, @LocalGovernme13 through July Moyo made a requisition to Treasury @ZimTreasury for the pumps and received in excess of €9 million. July subsequently claimed they replaced the Darwendale pumps.

3/ It’s suspected these pumps were never purchased and City of Harare did not make a request for the pumps. The deal was given to July’s handpicked company called Petrico without going for tender.

4/ Furthermore, I’m sure if one was to ask The Dutch Embassy how much they paid for the pumps, we won’t be surprised to find July’s requisition was exorbitantly overpriced……

7/ In the media reports, note the date this money was released by Govt and further note the reason the pumps were requested for…. The reason for buying the pumps is the same solution which had been addressed by the Dutch, so why double dip?

8/ So what’s our bottom line? Why did July Moyo aver to Cabinet the water problems being experienced by Harare City Council was a result of failure to pump water when the real problem is failure to secure water treatment chemicals?

9/ July Moyo was recently roasted by PB who wanted to know why there was no improvement in Harare’s water supply and yet Treasury availed USD9.3 million to solve this. The way it looks is Cabinet was apparently lied to and the money was pocketed… you be the judge of by who…?

10/ @edmnangagwa shouldn’t the above warrant an investigation and if verified constitute an offence worthy of incarceration? @ZACConline hero basa!

11/ Our country cannot move forward if we hide such dubious activities. This is what is meant by the President being surrounded by criminals. @ZACConline#CIO#NationalJOC@PoliceZimbabwe follow the breadcrumbs and discuss this amongst yourselves.. where are we going?

“ZACC Politically Harmstrung On Dr Mangwiro”: REPORT

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) is politically hamstrung to arrest deputy Health minister John Mangwiro (pictured) after he allegedly coerced state-owned medical supplies entity NatPharm to award an inflated US$5.6 million Covid-19 tender to a Chinese company in which he had a personal interest in 2020, because of the influence of Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga.

The NewsHawks, in partnership with Transparency International Zimbabwe, is following up on the use of Covid-19 funds in the interest of transparency and accountability. Mangwiro is Chiwenga’s political ally and his personal doctor.

He was on Chiwenga’s side as he battled a life-threatening illness in China, before making a stunning recovery following life-saving surgery at a top military hospital in Beijing in 2019.

Chiwenga and his allies however believe Mangwiro is being targeted as part of a ploy to go after the vice-president’s allies while also roping in the vice-president in the corruption scandal.

“Despite Zacc investigators doing investigations and producing a report which implicates Mangwiro and suggests he acted to serve his personal interest at the expense of national interests by forcing NatPharm to award Young Health Care Limited the tender, nothing has happened because of the political implications. Chiwenga has flexed his muscle and Zacc has been forced to retreat,” an official close to the case said.

“The merits or demerits of the case do not matter at this point. Politics is now at play. Zacc had recommended that Mangwiro be further investigated, before being arrested and prosecuted over the matter. There has, however, not been any movement since 2020.”

Specifically, Zacc recommended that Mangwiro be charged for criminal abuse of office. Asked for an update on the Mangwiro case, Zacc chairperson Loice Matanda Moyo declined to comment, saying she was on leave.

Zacc spokesperson John Makamure was neither answering phone calls nor responding to text messages. He read his WhatsApp message, but did not respond to The NewsHawks.

Mangwiro intervened after NatPharm had blocked the company in which he had an undeclared interest from getting a tender to supply vital Covid-19 materials. This even after Young Health Care had reduced its inflated quote by a staggering US$2.6 million.

After an investigation, Zacc recommended that Mangwiro, Chiwenga’s deputy and his personal physician, be investigated and prosecuted for criminal abuse of office.

“The actions of the deputy minister signal a personal interest in the tender, and this should have prompted him to declare his interest,” a stinging internal Zacc memo leaked to online media said after a review of tender NAT TCB FWWK 04/2020 for the supply of laboratory equipment, reagents and consumables for Covid-19 to NatPharm.

Sources told The NewHawks in November 2020 that Zacc was at the time pressuring the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Praz) officials to say that Mangwiro was acting under instruction from Chiwenga while he was in China over the corrupt deal.

“What is happening here is this: Zacc and Sacu think that Chiwenga is the one behind Mangwiro in the deal. Their story is that when Chiwenga was in China he brokered the deal and then assigned Mangwiro to execute,” a source told The NewsHawks.

“They say Chiwenga wanted to bring the sup[1]plies through Mangwiro from China where he had gone for medical review, but since it was urgent they decided to send a plane to deliver instead of waiting for him to bring the materials, which they initially thought of.

“For that to happen, Mangwiro had to prevail over NatPharm to give Young Health Care a supply contract. That’s where the Praz people come into the equation over adjudication. In a bid to get his way, Mangwiro became desperate and even called them during awkward times like around 10pm to secure the tender. They say this was because he was under pressure from his own boss, Chiwenga. Now Zacc wants Praz officials to say that Chiwenga was involved; that he is the principal in the deal and Mangwiro is just a runner.”

According to Zacc’s investigation findings over the tender, carried out between August 31 and September 4 2020, one of the Health minis[1]try’s directors, Dr Gibson Mhlanga, then acting Health secretary, wrote to NatPharm on 15 July 2020, instructing the company to “make direct procurements of supplies from Young Health Care.”

Zacc said this was in violation of Praz Circular 1 of 2020 which decrees that “only Praz-listed suppliers are sources of Covid-19 supplies.”

“Initial quotation by Young Health Care for supply of commodities under direct procurement, where prices quoted by Young Health Care Limited were exorbitant amounted to US$5.6 million, which was coincidentally the same amount that was in the ministry coffers, suggesting that the company had inside information,” the Zacc report said.

Zacc said after NatPharm insisted on a competitive bidding process, Mangwiro – a medical doctor appointed to deputy minister in September 2018 – demanded that the tender be delayed to allow Young Health Care to register with Praz.

“When NatPharm insisted on competitive bidding, Young Health Care Limited subsequently submitted a bid price of US$3.6 million for the same items. This saw a reduction of 36 percent in the price,” the report said.

Zacc said when the emergency 48-hour tender was finally floated on 5 August and closed on 7 August, 22 bidders including Young Health Care Limited made bids. Young Health Care, according to the Zacc probe, missed out on the tender.

Zacc, citing the then acting NatPharm managing director Zealous Nyabadza, said this angered Mangwiro who summoned the company’s top managers late at night “to explain why the tender was not awarded to Young Health Care Limited.”

“The deputy minister also demanded that a purchase order be issued that same night. The adjudication team was picked from their homes around 10pm and were interrogated by Mangwiro until the early hours of the following day. The deputy minister threatened the team with dismissal for failing to award Young Health Care the contracts,” the report said.

Zacc also found that Young Health Care had also been given a purchase order by NatPharm for nucleic acid, purification machines, transport media and reagents.

After delivering on two of the four purification machines and about 6% of the other two orders, the company reportedly requested an advance “contrary to the terms and conditions of the contract signed with NatPharm, which stipulates that payment should be made seven days after delivery”.

The equipment received by NatPharm was worth US$124 630.40.

Mangwiro “insisted on pre-payment and tasked the technical team from NatPharm procurement to visit Young Health Care Limited in their country office and verify available stock in order to compel the NatPharm acting MD to make a prepayment to Young Health Care Limited”, the report said.

The verification team found that items amounting to US$127 643.20 were in stock instead of the US$922 000 requested for pre-payment. In the end, Zacc said Mangwiro’s alleged actions “violated the evaluation process since the technical team did not have the mandate to carry out the verification of supplies”.

Nyabadza wrote to the Health ministry permanent secretary Jasper Chimedza on 26 August 2020 “informing him of the pre-payment issue and seeking guidance on how to proceed”, but received no reply “prompting him to decline taking Mangwiro’s instruction to pre-pay Young Health Care”.

“Given the extent to which the deputy minister was involved in the said tender process, indications are that he was acting in his own capacity and not on behalf of the ministry . . .

The conduct of the deputy minister during this tender process warrants further investigations for criminal abuse of office for possible violation of Section 174 of the Criminal Law Codification Act [Chapter9:23],” the report said.

“Apart from this provision, further investigations should be conducted to ascertain possible violation of Section 14 of the Public Finance Management Act [Chapter22:19] by the deputy minister through giving ministerial directives having financial implications when he demand[1]ed prepayment of undelivered goods to Young Health Care.

There is need for further investi[1]gations into the possible violation of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act [Chapter 22:23] as the conduct of the Deputy Minister might have compromised the independence of NatPharm as a procurement entity.”

Met Services Warns Of Heavy Rains Starting Today

By A Correspondent- The Government has activated emergency response mechanisms countrywide after the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) issued an alert for heavy rains and strong winds in parts of Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Mashonaland West, starting today.

This morning the Emergency Service Sub-Committee will convene a meeting to deliberate on an effective response to avoid loss of lives and livelihoods witnessed during Cyclone Idai in Chimanimani and other parts of Manicaland.

The sub-committee is composed of the Air Force of Zimbabwe – who played a critical role in evacuating people last time, Police, the Department of Civil Protection (DCP), MSD and other partners.

As of yesterday, structures had been activated in Manicaland, Mashonaland Provinces and across Masvingo to be ready for the worst possible outcomes.

Those left homeless by the Cyclone Idai Storm have all been evacuated, DCP director Mr Nathan Nkomo gave details of the emergency response plan.

“We have activated structures in Manicaland, Masvingo and some districts in Mashonaland Central and other parts of the country.

“Our teams have petty cash for emergency response purposes, and we are also taking advantage of schools which are still closed for emergency evacuation centres,” said Mr Nkomo.

“I am happy to say all those who were living in tents after Cyclone Idai have been relocated to Runyararo formerly West-end farm, a new settlement built to accommodate the victims.

“Tomorrow (today) morning we are meeting as the emergency services sub-committee and we will be giving details of the response plan,” Mr Nkomo said.

The alert issued by MSD follows an overload depression crossing from Madagascar, entering into Mozambique with heavy rainfall.

The depression started yesterday and experts say it can strengthen to a tropical storm before striking Northern parts of Mozambique today.

Mozambique together with Zimbabwe, Malawi and Zambia are threatened by flooding rains this week.

But, speaking to the Herald yesterday MSD’s Mr James Ngoma warned of heavy rains but allayed fears of floods.

“Heavy rains are expected in Manicaland, Mashonaland East and parts of Mashonaland West, these areas will receive an estimated 30mm,” he said.

The alert issued by MSD yesterday warned of heavy rains anticipated up to Thursday occasioned by the tropical depression on the Mozambican channel.

People are being urged to secure all loose items including roof tops, stay indoors during thunderstorms and heavy rains.

“Only move to higher ground when advised by Civil Protection Units Stay informed through official Meteorological Services Department platforms,” reads part of the communique from MSD.

“The Tropical Depression is now evolving in the Mozambique Channel and has been gradually intensifying for the past few hours due to warm waters of the Channel.”

Southern African countries are also issuing warnings of the same. Malawi said.

“The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (DCCMS) would like to inform the Malawi nation that Tropical Depression which is an initial stage in the development of a Tropical Cyclone has developed in the Indian Ocean, northeast of Madagascar on Friday the 21st January 2022.”

Mauritius Meteorological Services also issued a warning to its citizenry.

“The tropical disturbance in the Mozambique channel may intensify further at night. It is moving in a West North Westerly direction at about 20 km/h.”-statemedia

Scud Shocker For Six Karoi Men

By A Correspondent- Six Karoi men were left shocked when they discovered used condoms at the bottom of a sorghum beer container, popularly known as a ‘scud’, on Wednesday last week.

Garikayi Musakambeva, Sheppard Mahwande, Robson Nyamande, Josphat Nyamapfeni, Lazarus Venganayi and Alec Kamwaya were sharing a scud at Zingwe bottlestore near Chikangwe bus terminus when they discovered three condoms inside the scud.

They have since approached the Delta depot in Karoi over the incident and investigations are underway.

‘‘I was taking my last sip when I came across an open condom inside. We found out that there were actually two more condoms in the scud,” Musakambeva said.

“We went to report the matter to the police, who referred us to hospital.”

Their medical report dated January 19, 2022, read:

“Patient said he found a condom in beer container. Referred to responsible company via the police.”

The container was left at the Karoi Delta depot.

Mahwande said they all saw the condoms coming out of the scud.

“It is true that we found the condoms inside the scud. One of the condoms had been opened, while the other two were sealed,” he said.

Delta general manager for corporate affairs Patricia Murambinda confirmed that she received the report last Friday.

‘‘The said product sample was only left yesterday (Thursday) at our Karoi Delta distribution centre for further analysis in Harare by our quality control department,” she said in a written response to NewsDay.

Murambinda said the results would be out in a week.

‘‘We haven’t had such cases. For now, I can’t comment on anything until the full process of investigation has been done to ascertain the contents of the pack,” she said.

Bottlestore owner Pardon Zingwe distanced himself from the incident, saying the men could have bought the beer from a shebeen.

“I only order sealed beer,” he said curtly.

Its Not My Account, Roki Trashes Widely Circulated Patati Patata Apology

Popular urban grooves crooner, Rockford Josphat, better known as Roki, has dismissed claims he apologised for his hit song Patati Patata, describing the claims as desperate and criminal.

“WHILE I usually do not respond to posts on social media associated with my name, it has come to my attention that a YouTube account with my name is posting on other accounts responding to questions about me or commenting on works I have done or intend to do with other artists.

I would like the public to know that comments associated with my name on the account Roki zw do not belong to me, Rockford Josphat, or Roki as most of you know me. I do not even have an active YouTube account

My only social media accounts are Facebook, – Roki Josphats Official @rokijosphatofficial  and Instagram  – roki_zw

Any other account claiming to belong to me apart from the ones above should be ignored.

This “ghost” is misrepresenting the respect given to our head of State, Honourable Emmerson Mnangagwa in the hit song Patati Patata and our late legend and father Dr Oliver Mtukudzi and dear colleague and brother Soul Jah Love. May the two musicians’ souls rest in peace.”

Roki’s clarification follows misrepresentations by some news outlets and gullible social media users which were fuelled by a mischievous post by a ghost account in his name.

The “ghost” account wrote on YouTube: “Apologies to all those who were offended by Patati Patata. The shout out to the President was a way of appreciating him for honoring Our Father, Our Legend Dr,Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi and Soul Jah Love Musaka.”

Roki said the comment should be dismissed with the contempt.

“I view the comments as disrespectful and unfortunate to the honorable people mentioned and artists and producers I worked with on the hit song Patati Patata.

It is unfortunate that a number of innocent people including myself have fallen victim to cyber bullying and misrepresentation on social media thus affecting their social standings in society, professional careers, families and reputations. It is also sad that some media houses have published stories based on those social media posts without consulting me or my management team.

I encourage all Zimbabweans to desist from creating fake accounts that are aimed at misrepresenting their professions, social standings, other people and reputation.  I also encourage media houses and individuals to double/cross check with the person involved if contents on the account they want to quote does belong to the person at hand.”
