Parliament Under Pressure Over Diaspora Vote

Zimbabweans living abroad have pressed Parliament to amend the Electoral Act to allow the diaspora community to vote and participate in preceding election activities.

This comes on the back of the just ended virtual hearings held by Parliament’s committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary affairs, Monday and Tuesday to gather views on the amendment of Electoral Act.

Zimbabwe Diaspora Vote, wrote to Parliament in their submissions calling for amendment of the Electoral Act to allow them to register to vote using address of one’s property, a relative and place where one was born in Zimbabwe.

In their submission the organisation proposed for Zimbabwean embassies dotted around the globe to be used in electoral processes for the benefit of citizens abroad.

“We suggest amendment of Section 17A of the Electoral Act to enable the Commission to register interested Zimbabwean citizens in the diaspora to vote at the Zimbabwe embassies.

“Amend Subsection 33(2)(b) of the Electoral Act to allow Zimbabweans living in the diaspora to register to vote in the constituencies they were registered before leaving the country unless if they have a new address in Zimbabwe,” read the submission in part.

The diaspora vote has been a bone of contention with President Emmerson Mnangagwa shooting down any prospect for them to participate in the plebiscite.

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has also called for the diaspora vote to be considered which they believe will provide a boost for their aspirations to unseat Zanu PF.

Majority of Zimbabweans moved in droves across borders to seek greener pastures following years of economic turmoil.

“Amend 37c of the Electoral Act to ensure that election results are communicated to the National Command Centre immediately following verification of the results by representatives of the contestants in the election. Ensure that the Electoral Act allows agents of parties contesting in an election in the diaspora are allowed in the polling stations to witness the voting process.

“Ensure the Electoral Act is amended such that the diaspora vote is managed in a manner that ensures the transparency and integrity of the entire electoral process as contained in item 7.8 of the SADC principles and guidelines Make any other amendments as necessary to the Electoral Act to ensure a smooth diaspora voting process,” read the submissions further.

War Breaks Out Between Chicken Slice And Chicken Inn

Chicken Slice founder and chief executive officer Tawanda Mutyebere has accused his competitors the Simbisa Brands-owned Chicken Inn of bullying and of trying to stop his business empire from using red and yellow colours on its products.
He said Chicken Inn also wants Chicken Slice to stop using the word “Luv” in their payoff line.

This follows a three-year legal battle between the two fast-food companies, in which Chicken Inn, a subsidiary of Simbisa Brands, filed an application at the High Court in 2019 seeking an interdict against Chicken Slice using what it termed its trademarks.

Chicken Inn argued that the latter had used “Luv” in its burger and grill logo.

The company also argued it had always used “Luv Dat Chicken” since 1987 before Chicken Slice started using “I Luv it” on its burger boxes.

High Court judge Justice Sylvia Chirawu-Mugomba last month dismissed the application by Chicken Inn.

“There was no case. The idea here is about bullying,” Mutyebere told NewsDay yesterday.

“Where on earth would one be not allowed to use the word luv? Love is not a coined word, it’s generic — whether you use the word love or luv. The word Luv is actually in the Oxford dictionary and, therefore, you cannot say this is my word that I am using.”

He described the attempts by Chicken Inn to stop his company from using the red and yellow colours as “ridiculous”.

“Where on earth can one say red or yellow is my colour? That’s ridiculous. You cannot register a colour. In Zimbabwe, if they do not want to use the colour red, it then means everyone using the colour red must stop using the colour right from the national flag of Zimbabwe,” he charged.

Mutyebere said Chicken Inn had wasted his company’s resources fighting “unnecessary” legal battles.

He described this as “tricks of a bully”.

“They are just there to try and frustrate us, but we will never be frustrated with such kind of poor attacks. You cannot feed Zimbabwe by yourself.”

Contacted for comment, Simbisa Brands managing director Warren Meares said they do not consider Chicken Slice as competitors.

“We have got no qualms or animosity with Mr Mutyebere in any way. If anything, concerning Mr Mutyebere — and you are someone on the street, wherever we go, he follows. We went to Braeside, he followed, we went to Walk Tall West End, he followed, Kadoma he followed, we went to Gweru and he followed, and we were in Bulawayo he followed,” Meares said.”

“When I see him, I stop and have a chat. I don’t have any qualms with him. If anything, I love the fact that he can become successful, and competition is good. I see KFC (American global chicken fast-food store, with outlets in Zimbabwe) more as competition than Chicken Slice. KFC is an international brand. It is a big name, it is a strong name, which is real competition. Chicken Slice is our little brother who is copying us.”—Newsday

Military Jet Crashes

Book Rapining Shoots Up

A Long winding queue snakes to the pavement from a photocopying shop in the Bulawayo city centre and each customer patiently waits his or her turn to be served through a window.

Behind the window is a middle-aged man who single-handedly takes the orders, receives payments and gives the customers the books they have paid for.

From the look of things, the man is running a profitable business judging by the number of customers waiting to be served but unfortunately the operation is illegal.

The man is photocopying books, mostly school text books to walk-in customers and his books are also sold on the streets of Bulawayo. In some cases the vendors sell the books in front of bookshops.

The man declined to be interviewed and demanded that the pictures taken by the Saturday Chronicle photographer Nkosizile Ndlovu be deleted.

He threatened to report the news crew to the police for taking his pictures and that of his customers despite the fact that his operation is illegal.

The reproduction of texts books or any reading material without the consent of the authors or publishers is illegal under the country’s laws but book piracy is a thriving industry in Zimbabwe. Book piracy involves the replication of copyrighted literature through scanning, photocopying, printing and electronic duplication of books, which is now common in major cities.

The illegal reproduction and photocopying of books, which are then sold on the streets, has given livelihoods to many but is leaving authors and publishers wallowing in poverty. Publishers are feeling the pinch as book piracy continues to threaten the industry.

“Book piracy is killing our industry. Publishing is a business that requires a lot of capital as we have to buy expensive machinery most of which is imported, pay workers’ salaries, rentals and many other related expenses of running a business,” said one of the publishers.

He said there is an urgent need for stakeholders and the police to come up with measures to stop the book piracy to save the industry.

“The country is losing a lot of revenue and there are fears it could become the biggest importer of books if many publishers are forced to close shop,” said the publisher.

One parent, Constance Mlilo, said she has no choice but to buy illegally reproduced books which are cheaper compared to the prices in bookshops.

“The books are cheaper and readily available. Sometimes as parents we look for our children’s textbooks for days on end at these established bookshops to no avail and we end up buying these photocopied books,” said Mlilo.

A school teacher who declined to be named, said schools are the biggest culprits that are fueling the illegal reproduction of books.

“Most schools, colleges and universities have since acquired heavy duty photocopying machines to reproduce books.

Teachers cannot stop learners from bringing illegally reproduced textbooks into class,” he said.

A tour of Bulawayo’s city centre streets showed that book piracy is a thriving business. The books on the streets are selling for a song compared to the bookshop prices hence many parents are buying from the streets.

Zimbabwe Book Sellers Association chairman Paul Masuku said book piracy is getting out of hand.

“You will find that, for instance, a bookshop is selling a Grade Three Mathematics textbook for US$9 but that same book will be on the streets selling for as low as US$3. Book piracy is killing the livelihoods of book shop owners and publishers,” he said.

Mr Masuku said what is disturbing is that even school authorities are encouraging parents to buy the low quality text books from the streets.

“We are aware of teachers who are advising parents to buy books from photocopying shops saying they are cheaper,” he said. -state media

Andre Ayew Joins Nottingham Forest

Andre Ayew has completed his switch to the English Premier League after joining Nottingham Forest on a free transfer.

The Ghanaian striker, who played for Swansea and West Ham in England’s top-flight, signed a deal until the end of the season.

Forest were able to sign the player outside the transfer window because he’s a free agent.

The 33-year-old Black Stars captain was without a club following his exit from Qatari outfit Al Sadd.

“It’s a great feeling to sign for Nottingham Forest,” Ayew said on the club’s official website.

“I know how big the club is and I know how much the club means to the city and the fanbase.

“It’s always been difficult whenever I’ve played against Forest and at The City Ground and I love the stadium.

“Steve Cooper is someone who knows me very well and knows how to work with me both on and off the pitch.

“We have a strong relationship, he’s a special coach and a special human being and someone who I really look up to.

“I know what I can bring to the team, I’m ready to give my all and make sure that we are able to stay in the Premier League.”

The transfer follows after the striker was heavily tipped to join Everton but turned down the offer to join Forest.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Messi Speaks On Future

Lionel Messi has suggested that he wants to continue playing football until the next FIFA World Cup but openly admitted the age might make it difficult for him.

The Argentina captain will be turning 39-year-old at the 2026 edition that will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“Because of age it’ll be difficult to make 2026,” Messi told Argentine publication Diario Olé. “I love playing football and while I feel like I’m in good shape and enjoying this, I’m going to keep at it. It seems like a long time until the next World Cup, but it depends on how my career is going.”

Messi holds the Argentine records for caps (172) as well as goals (98). He finally got his hands on the World Cup after his side beat France in the final.

The superstar also won another major trophy on the international stage with victory over Brazil in last year’s Copa America final.

And Argentine manager Lionel Scaloni holds optimism on Messi’s future.

“I think Messi can make it to the next World Cup,” Scaloni told Spanish radio Calvia FM last month, as cited by ESPN. “It will depend a lot on what he wants and what happens over time, that he feels good. The doors will always be open. He is happy on the pitch, and for us [it] would be good.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Zanu PF Mazowe MP Under Probe For Rape Charges

By A Correspondent| Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Mazowe Central Cde Sydney Chidamba has come under investigations for rape charges following his affair with an under-age school going kid and subsequently impregnating her.

The story follows the rise of unreported cases of girl child abuse in the country by politicians at a time when First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa is calling for a zero tolerance against rape and child abuse through her Angel of Hope Foundation.

Unfortunately, at the alleged time of the rape, the girl was a learner at Kakora Secondary School which is the rural home for the First Lady a situation which has irked women to let the cat out of the bag and seek prosecution of the legislator who committed the crime and enjoyed the protection of the then ruling political goons.

Allegations are that sometime in 2016, Chidamba was in an affair with the school kid (name supplied) and he went on to impregnate her despite that she had not yet attained the legal age of majority.

In attempt to cover up the crime, Chidamba reportedly went on to liaise with the family of the girl and quickly settled lobola charges in a bid to hoodwink members of the public who were aware of the matter.

A source close to the issue who however declined to be named for fear of victimization said Chidamba took the girl to be his wife, “it is a public secret that is well known by all and everywhere here in Chiweshe, Kakora.

“By then the girl was less than 16 years and attending school at Kakora , she went on to give birth to a baby and was concealed somewhere near Ceaser Mine where the MP is currently renting her a full house close to Barwick school,” revealed the source.

Women’s group have raised alarm against tainted personalities seeking office saying there is need to purge the dirty from parliament, “the reason we are bringing this dirty linen before the public is an attempt to make sure that perpetrators of rape and child abuse should not celebrate getting away with it.

“As a country we are of the thinking that we should address these issues starting by the law makers themselves, I know some might feel that it’s a political stance but then this is the right time to expose such evils,” said a wing of women’s activists who also declined to be named for fear of political victimization.

Mazowe district in Mashonaland Central province has remained with high prevalent rates of HIV/ AIDS/ Rape and Gender Based Violence owing mainly to the high presence of artisanal miners and previously crooked corrupt political systems.

Efforts to get a comment from Chidamba nor the family of the victim were futile during the time of publishing, however this publication is reliably informed that Chidamba has previously made several attempts to kill the story from various presses.

“Our call is for the police to institute investigations and for members of the media to play the investigative role in having the truth come out, otherwise it is such things that will fail us to attain Vision 2030 as well as heal the society,” said a Zanu PF official from Mazowe.

Bulawayo Man Practices Mubobobo At Banking Quee

By- A Bulawayo man was arrested for practising Mubobo at a woman standing in a bank queue.

Tedious Muchavheruka (38) of Makokoba was arrested after a woman who was queuing at a bank in the city centre nearly jumped out of her skin when she felt something hard and slimy sliding up and down her back.
To her horror, when she turned to check, she allegedly saw a red-eyed man furiously rubbing his “fully cocked AK-47” against her buttocks.
The 21-year-old woman cannot be named for ethical reasons.
The incident, which police confirmed, occurred at a bank situated at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street and 9th Avenue last Saturday.
While the woman was queuing for cash, she felt something strange rubbing against her bums and she cringed.
Upon checking, she saw Muchavheruka standing behind her making sexual movements on her.
A witness said Muchavheruka was wearing a condom, panting and had a glazed look in his eyes.
“The woman said she felt something strange in her private parts at the same time she felt as if she was falling into a trance.
“Upon checking behind her stood a man who looked as if he was having real sex with her as he was panting and was holding his “angry” manhood in his hands,” said the witness.
Seeing that he had been caught in action, he tried to shove his trouser-snake back into its natural habitat, but it was too late.
“The woman charged at him and he fled. There was a collective gasp from people in the queue and they stood in shock as improbable scene unfolded,” said another bystander.
The bystander added: “The woman reported the incident to the police. After about 30 minutes the man returned and he was arrested.”
Witnesses said a heated debate ensued among the people in the queue with some saying the man was using umubobobo – supernatural sex without physical contact – while others maintained Muchavheruka was simply masturbating.
He appeared before Tredgold magistrate Max Sibanda facing indecent assault charges.
He was remanded out of custody to Wednesday next week on $30 000 bail on condition that he reside at the address he gave at the court.
He was ordered not to interfere with State witnesses or the complainant until the matter is finalised.
He was also ordered to report at Mzilikazi Police Station on Mondays between 6AM and 6PM. B Metro

Founder and chief executive officer of the former, Tawanda Mutyebere, has accused his competitor Chicken Inn of bullying.

This comes after Chicken Inn filed an application at the High Court in 2019 seeking an interdict against Chicken Slice using what it termed its trademarks.

Andre Ayew Returns To PSL

Malaria Prevention And Treatment

Key facts

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.

It is preventable and curable.

In 2021, there were an estimated 247 million cases of malaria worldwide.
The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 619 000 in 2021.
The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2021, the region was home to 95% of malaria cases and 96% of malaria deaths. Children under 5 accounted for about 80% of all malaria deaths in the Region.
Overview

Malaria is an acute febrile illness caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. There are 5 parasite species that cause malaria in humans, and 2 of these species – P. falciparum and P. vivax – pose the greatest threat. P. falciparum is the deadliest malaria parasite and the most prevalent on the African continent. P. vivax is the dominant malaria parasite in most countries outside of sub-Saharan Africa.

The first symptoms – fever, headache and chills – usually appear 10–15 days after the infective mosquito bite and may be mild and difficult to recognize as malaria. Left untreated, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness and death within a period of 24 hours.

In 2021, nearly half of the world’s population was at risk of malaria. Some population groups are at considerably higher risk of contracting malaria and developing severe disease: infants, children under 5 years of age, pregnant women and patients with HIV/AIDS, as well as people with low immunity moving to areas with intense malaria transmission such as migrant workers, mobile populations and travellers.

Disease burden
According to the latest World malaria report, there were 247 million cases of malaria in 2021 compared to 245 million cases in 2020. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 619 000 in 2021 compared to 625 000 in 2020.

Over the 2 peak years of the pandemic (2020–2021), COVID-related disruptions led to about 13 million more malaria cases and 63 000 more malaria deaths.

The WHO African Region continues to carry a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2021 the Region was home to about 95% of all malaria cases and 96% of deaths. Children under 5 years of age accounted for about 80% of all malaria deaths in the Region.

Four African countries accounted for just over half of all malaria deaths worldwide: Nigeria (31.3%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12.6%), United Republic of Tanzania (4.1%) and Niger (3.9%).

Prevention
Over the last 2 decades, expanded access to WHO-recommended malaria prevention tools and strategies – including effective vector control and the use of preventive antimalarial drugs – has had a major impact in reducing the global burden of this disease.

Vector control
Vector control is a vital component of malaria control and elimination strategies as it is highly effective in preventing infection and reducing disease transmission. The 2 core interventions are insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS).

Progress in global malaria control is threatened by emerging resistance to insecticides among Anopheles mosquitoes. As described in the latest World malaria report, other threats to ITNs include insufficient access, loss of nets due to the stresses of day-to-day life outpacing replacement, and changing behaviour of mosquitoes, which appear to be biting early before people go to bed and resting outdoors, thereby evading exposure to insecticides.

Preventive chemotherapies
Preventive chemotherapy is the use of medicines, either alone or in combination, to prevent malaria infections and their consequences. It requires giving a full treatment course of an antimalarial medicine to vulnerable populations (generally infants, children under 5 years of age and pregnant women) at designated time points during the period of greatest malarial risk, regardless of whether the recipients are infected with malaria.

Preventive chemotherapy includes perennial malaria chemoprevention (PMC), seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC), intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp) and school-aged children (IPTsc), post-discharge malaria chemoprevention (PDMC) and mass drug administration (MDA).

These safe and cost-effective strategies are intended to complement ongoing malaria control activities, including vector control measures, prompt diagnosis of suspected malaria, and treatment of confirmed cases with antimalarial medicines.

Vaccine
Since October 2021, WHO also recommends broad use of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine among children living in regions with moderate to high P. falciparum malaria transmission.

The vaccine has been shown to significantly reduce malaria, and deadly severe malaria, among young children.

Zaka Man Sues Prosecutor General

ZAKA – A Zaka motorist, who allegedly caused a fatal road traffic accident which claimed three lives in 2019, has sued Prosecutor General (PG) Nelson Mutsonziwa for delaying his trial.

Brian Chiwara, who faces culpable homicide, filed an application with the High Court demanding finalisation of his case.

Court papers show that Chiwara was arrested in 2019 for allegedly causing the accident in which three people were killed on the spot along Roy-Chiredzi Road.

Since then, he has made numerous appearances at Zaka Magistrates’ Court, where trial keeps being postponed.

Following his arrest, Chiwara remained in custody until July 13, 2021 when trial commenced.

Three witnesses were lined up to testify against him but none turned up to give their testimony.

Chiwara was then remanded out of custody to August 12, 2021 before trial was moved to October 7 due to disruptions caused by Covid-19.

Trial was further moved after witnesses failed to show up.

On 26 November 2021, he was removed from remand, only to be summoned again on March 22, 2022 where one witness testified.

On 14 April 2022, the State secured the attendance of another witness but sought a further postponement, with prosecutors saying they needed more time to locate the remaining witness.

This led to Chiwara filing his initial application before the magistrate seeking a verdict.

However, the magistrate dismissed the application, noting that he had only been on remand since March 22.

This also prompted his filing of the current application which was dismissed by High Court judge Owen Tagu who ruled that he should be patient.

“The general rule is that a superior court should intervene in uncompleted proceedings of the lower courts only if exceptional circumstances of proven irregularity vitiate the proceedings and give rise to a miscarriage of justice.

“If the witness had testified and the applicant was of the view that there was no case against him, he could have filed for discharge at the close of the State case.

“If the application was not going to find favour in the court at that stage, there was a possibility of the applicant being acquitted at the close of the State case.

“If not acquitted, but convicted, the applicant had the option of applying for a review or appeal. In the premises, I find that the application lacks merit and I will dismiss it,” ruled the judge.

Soda Zhemu Taken To Task Over Incessant Power Cuts

Energy minister Zhemu Soda was yesterday grilled in Senate over the electricity crisis currently affecting the country, which has resulted in rolling power cuts of up to 22 hours daily.

Senators demanded to know government’s plans to improve power generation.

Soda said his ministry would meet the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) soon to discuss water allocations to improve electricity generation.

“What the government did in order to ameliorate the situation of depressed power supply was to increase imports from the region.  We got an addition of around 250 megawatts, and we are importing a total of 500 megawatts. That is the reason why the situation did not deteriorate even when we had reduced production at Kariba because of the water situation,” Soda said.

“From Kariba, we are generating 250 megawatts, but we are meeting ZRA with the hope that water allocation is going to be increased and improve our generation.”

The country was plunged into an energy crisis after the ZRA last year ordered the Zimbabwe Power Company to suspend operations at the Kariba South Hydro Power Station due to low water levels in the lake.

Chicken Slice Is Our Little Brother Who Is Copying Us, Says Chicken Inn

By A Correspondent| Chicken Inn has responded to an attack from Chicken Slice saying they do not regard the company as their competitor but a little brother copying from them.

The two were embroiled in a legal dispute over the use of the word Luv on their products with Chicken Inn claiming that Chicken Slice copied them.

Following the conclusion of the case at the courts, Chicken Slice owner Tawanda Mutyebere described Chicken Inn as bullies while claiming that the Simbisa Brands owned brand was there to frustrate them out of business.

But Simbisa Brands has hit back accusing Chicken Slice of following them where-ever they go.

“We have got no qualms or animosity with Mr Mutyebere in any way. If anything, concerning Mr Mutyebere — and you are someone on the street, wherever we go, he follows. We went to Braeside, he followed, we went to Walk Tall West End, he followed, Kadoma he followed, we went to Gweru and he followed, and we were in Bulawayo he followed,” said Simbisa Brands managing director Warren Meares.

Chicken Slice is our little brother who is copying us,” added Meares.

Zanu PF Warns ‘Criminal’ Mnangagwa Namedroppers

ZANU PF youth leader Tino Machakaire yesterday read the riot act on party youths who use President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s name to engage in criminal activities and warned that they would face the might of the law.

Speaking at the national youth league executive meeting in Harare, Machakaire said indiscipline had gone out of hand and that some of the youths were committing crimes in the name of the party.

“Every member of the party should toe the line of the party. Indiscipline in the name of name-dropping should stop. We should stop using names of senior party leaders for our selfish gains,” he said.

Machakaire urged Zanu PF youth leaders to shun corruption.

“We have incidences where people soil the name of the party through corruption. Others have become land barons. This should stop because we are soiling the image of Zanu PF. If you commit a crime in the name of Zanu PF, you will face the music alone,” he said.

The Hwedza South legislator also called on party youths to shun violence in the upcoming general elections.

“The President has been clear on the issue of violence, we say no to violence. We should come up with strategies to mobilise and win elections.”

Meanwhile, Zanu PF national spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said the ruling party would shock the opposition in urban centres.

For the past 20 years, people in urban centres have been voting for the opposition party.

Mutsvangwa said the investment drive which has been spearheaded by Mnangagwa and Zanu PF tactics would deliver some of the seats to the ruling party.

“The 2023 election will deliver a knockout to the opposition because Zanu PF has been stronger since Operation Restore Legacy (the period when former leader, the late Robert Mugabe was ousted from power). We are more than prepared to campaign for our President, Mnangagwa who has been working tirelessly to improve the lives of Zimbabweans,” he said.

“Since coming into power, President Mnangagwa has overseen a lot of development in infrastructure, investments and other areas. The 2023 election is a foregone conclusion, we are going to win.

“The rural population has supported us since the time of the liberation struggle. However, we have also put measures in place to grab some of the seats in urban areas.”

Chicken Inn Accused Of Bullying Competitors

Zimbabwe Ambassador To South Africa Fights Claims Of Politicking With ZEP Returnees

Zimbabwean ambassador to South Africa David Hamadziripi has dismissed accusations that the move by his government to assist those Zimbabweans in South Africa whose permits are not going to be renewed is a political ploy by the regime to lure electorates ahead of elections.

He says the embassy will launch a process to register those who want to return back home. The ambassador was addressing the media in Pretoria.

He says his government will provide transport for those who want to return back home.

“This exercise it has absolutely nothing to do with the upcoming elections in Zimbabwe. It is not the government of Zimbabwe that took the decision that the ZEP holders is going to end on the 30th of June. It think its typical cynicism translating everything to a political gamble. No, we are talking about people’s life here,”

Nakamba Keen To Revive Career

ASTON Villa’s Warriors midfielder Marvelous Nakamba is taking a status downgrade with a loan move to English Championship side Luton Town where he can however, resuscitate his limping career at a team and level he is guaranteed game time, at least.

The 29-year-old whose contract with the Birmingham side expires mid-next year has been living on borrowed time at Villa Park having been openly told by manager Unai Emery to look for an alternative home.

And with no suitors showing up, Nakamba’s situation was increasingly becoming desperate with the clock ticking towards deadline which lapsed last night.

So delicate was the position, Nakamba was facing the sad reality of being offloaded.

However, West Bromwich Albion, who also play in the English Championship where they are 10th on the table had shown interest on Monday but they couldn’t act quick enough.

And they were overtaken by Luton Town who wasted no time in agreeing a loan move for the former Bantu Rovers man.

He underwent his medicals at The Hatters yesterday afternoon with the Zimbabwean joining the Bedfordshire club yesterday evening.

Luton Town confirmed on their website last night they had captured the signature of the Zimbabwean midfielder.

“We are delighted to announce the loan signing of Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba for the remainder of the season” read the statement on Luton Town’s website.

The club manager Rob Edwards hailed Nakamba as a hardworking midfielder who can help his team secure promotion into the EPL.

“We’re so pleased to be able to bring Marvelous in. That position is one we’ve been looking to fill for a while. I think we’ve got a lot of good midfielders, but not many natural, deep midfield players and I really like what he’s about,” Edwards told the club site.

“He’s got a brilliant attitude, great physicality, good quality and I think he really suits the way we play, so he will fit in really well with us.

“He’s had amazing experiences playing in the Premier League and Champions League, and we want him to bring all of that to try to help improve us.

“There are difficult decisions within this window, but everything that we are trying to do is always with an aim to try to keep improving and moving forward, and we feel that being able to get Marvelous in the building to the end of the season is a real coup for us.”

Nakamba was equally elated with the move.

Speaking after finalising his medical at The Brache, Nakamba said: “I’m very happy to be here at Luton Town. I know Henri Lansbury from Aston Villa and Ethan Horvath because I played with him at Club Brugge, so it’s a good feeling to see them again,” he said.

“I spoke with the gaffer and he told me about the project of the club and I told him my situation, that it was interesting for me to come over here.

“I think it’s good for the club, great for me and I love the ambition at the club. I’m looking forward to contributing to help the team.”

Nakamba was told he can leave Villa this month after a conversation with (Villa manager) Unai Emery.

The Villa boss spoke with a number of first-team stars earlier this month to inform them that they could find new clubs before the window shuts. Villa have let go of Cameron Archer and Morgan Sanson on loan, while Fredric Guilbert has joined the midfielder in Strasborg on a permanent contract.”

Nakamba will be hoping to help the Rob Edwards’ side to secure at least a play-off spot by the end of the season.

Luton Town are currently seventh in the Championship table with 42 points in 27 games (before their match against Cardiff City last night).

They are 20 points behind leaders Burnley and 17 adrift of an automatic qualification slot currently occupied by Sheffield United.

They can still get promoted via the play-offs if they can notch a top-six place in the marathon.

And Nakamba, who could as well move permanently to Luton Town at the end of the loan deal according to reports could still bounce back in the top-flight, in style should The Hatters clip promotion.

He is still a highly-regarded individual across England despite some hesitancy by top-flight clubs in that country to draw him to their homes.

Although there was reported interest from Fulham, Nottingham Forest and Newcastle, there were no formal requests made by those teams to Villa.

Nakamba who has accumulated 26 caps with the Warriors, has not featured for Aston Villa this season either under the sacked Steven Gerrard or Emery.

His last appearance for the club came against Manchester City in a 3-2 loss at the end of last season.

The defensive midfielder arrived at Villa Park from Club Brugge in 2019 for a fee in the region of US$11 million and walked straight into the first 11 under former manager Dean Smith.

He played 29 games in his first season before falling down the perking order in the two seasons that followed.

And he will be hoping to find himself again with a fresh start at Luton Town.- The Herald

Real Madrid Outclasses 10-Man Valencia To Move 5 Points Behind Barca

Marco Asensio and Vinicius Junior scored second-half goals to earn Real Madrid a solid 2-0 win over struggling Valencia on Thursday as the visitors finished the match with 10 men.

Valencia defender Gabriel Paulista was shown a straight red 18 minutes from time for chopping down Vinicius with a wild tackle that almost started a brawl among players on the pitch.

Valencia, who fired manager Gennaro Gattuso on Wednesday, are on a five-game winless streak and are 14th on 20 points, one clear of the relegation zone.

Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was happy with the clean sheet and said he’s seen improvement in the team’s defence as they try to close the gap to leaders Barcelona.

“We’ve now kept three clean sheets in a row. But I’d have preferred to concede the other day and win [against Real Sociedad], the most important thing is always the three points,” Courtois said.

“Defensively we’ve improved, in Bilbao and against La Real. Today they didn’t have many chances. We did well. In the first half we didn’t score but we did in the second, and with the sending off the last 15 minutes were easier.

“Real, bidding to retain the title, are under pressure from their arch-rivals Barca who are unbeaten in their last 14 matches in all competitions and on a four-game winning streak in LaLiga.

They were the better side for large parts of the game and controlled the tempo on a chilly night in Madrid, but it took them a while to find their mojo in front of goal, with Vinicius and Karim Benzema wasting good opportunities in the first half.

Former MP Chirume Speaks On Fatal Accident

MASVINGO – Oliver Chirume, a former MDC T MP for Gutu Central and a now leading CCC politician in Masvingo was involved in a fatal road accident on Saturday in which one person, his brother-in-law died on the spot.

The accident occurred some 25km from Masvingo near Mutimurefu just outside Mutimurefu Prison along Masvingo–Mutare Highway when the Toyota Grand Hiace burst its rear tyre and overturned three times, landing on its side off the road. The family was travelling from Masvingo to Chirume’s rural home in Gutu with the car packed with groceries for the former MP’s shop.

Five people were in the car, and Chirume’s brother-in-law, George Murombo (39), a truck driver in South Africa who was driving Chirume’s car is the one who died on the spot. Chirume’s wife Shylet Chirume nee Murombo is in a critical condition and was yesterday transferred from Makurira Clinic to St Anne’s Hospital in Harare.

Chirume’s condition is stable and he has since been released from hospital. He gave details of the accident in an interview with The Mirror

Two other passengers, Brandon, Chirume’s son and pupil at Hellen McGhie broke his right hand while Chantelle, the deceased’s daughter suffered injuries to the head and were both treated and discharged. Scarlett had just got a place at Hellen McGhie.

Chirume said all the passengers were thrown out of the car but however, in the case of Murombo, the vehicle landed on top of him thereby causing his death.

“After the accident I saw my wife lying face looking down in the middle of the road, my child was dangling from the window of the car while Scarlett was standing on the road but I could not see my brother-in-law. I attended to my wife, and then removed my son from the window and I fell down and passed out.

“I want to thank Roman Catholic priest Fr Willbrode Godzongi who passed by the accident from Mukaro Mission and took us to hospital,” said Chirume.

Murombo was buried yesterday at Murombo Village, Chief Makore in Ward 27, Gutu. He is survived by his wife and three children. Murombo worked as a truck driver for a milling company in Rustenburg, South Africa and was a devout Zion Christian Church (ZCC) Rustenburg member.

Man Grovels Cashier’s Boobs

After a cashier at a leading clothing retailer turned down his love proposal a Bulawayo man failed to control his raging sexual hormones and squeezed her breasts.
Nkosilathi Ncube, who lives at Dorchester House in the city centre has since gone on the run and a warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to show up in court for continuation of trial on Tuesday.

He had been arraigned before Bulawayo magistrate Nomagugu Maphosa facing a charge of indecent assault.

Allegations against Ncube are that on 16 January at around 8:45am, the predatory Ncube made love advances at the victim who ignored him. After he got served by another cashier, he went back to the victim with the same love intention and the woman was still as mute as a fish.

After a third attempt, with the victim still silent as a grave, Ncube fondled the woman’s left breast.

Seething with anger and disgust, the woman alerted the shop’s security guard who apprehended Ncube and took him to the police where the victim reported the matter.

Ncube pleaded guilty and was remanded out of custody on $10 000 bail to 30 January on his initial appearance last month.

Asked why he committed the offence, Ncube said it was not his intention.

He claimed that he was intoxicated and in trying to get the cashier’s attention, he made a mistake and touched her breast.– B Metro

Exam Results Withheld Over Suspected Cheating

ABOUT 195 candidates, some of them from Manicaland, are in limbo after their Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC)’s November 2022 Advanced Level results were withheld over suspected cases of irregularities and malpractices, The Manica Post can reveal.
The ‘A’ Level results were released on January 13, and three weeks on, the affected candidates are yet to access their results.

Section 34 of the ZIMSEC Act, Chapter 25:18, empowers the exam regulating body to annul results for candidates who had pre-access to examination papers to uphold the integrity of the examinations system in the country.

It reads: “. . . the board may cancel or postpone any examination or annul the results of any examination, either throughout Zimbabwe or in respect of any examination centre or area within Zimbabwe, if the board is satisfied that— (a) an unauthorised person has obtained access to any examination material; or (b) the contents of any examination material have been revealed to an unauthorised person; or (c) there has been an impersonation of a candidate sitting the examination or any other form of fraud or dishonest conduct in regard to the examination; or (d) any rule or regulation governing the examination has been contravened; and that it is necessary to cancel or postpone the examination or annul the results, as the case may be, in order to preserve the integrity of the examination system in Zimbabwe.”

On Wednesday, ZIMSEC spokesperson, Ms Nicholette Dlamini confirmed that results for hundreds of ‘A’ Level candidates are being withheld.

Ms Dlamini said affected candidates have 42 days to query for their results through their respective exam centres or schools.

It is understood that a number of schools in Mutare, Rusape, Chipinge and Mutasa have already approached ZIMSEC over the withheld results.

Over 100 learners and ZIMSEC officials from different parts of the country were arrested in connection with the leakage of ‘O’ Level Mathematics Papers 1 and 2; as well as English Paper 2 and some ‘A’ Level papers.

Ms Dlamini said some candidates, individual supervisors, invigilators, exam administrators and members of the public found culpable of aiding such vices were arrested and appeared before the courts.

Exam centre administrators who were the source of the leakage were also arrested.

Kudakwashe Betserai of Masvingo was arrested in Mutare after he fraudulently registered a SIM Card in the name of ZIMSEC, before going on to advertise that he had the capacity to replace lost certificates at a replacement fee of US$150.

Betserai masqueraded as a ZIMSEC official and was found selling fake certificates and some question papers.

He was therefore charged with fraud and contravening Section 35(a) and (b) of the ZIMSEC Act, Chapter 25:18, for unlawfully gaining access or revealing contents of examination material.

The matter is still pending before the courts.

Six Gaza High School (Chipinge) learners – Musuthu Sithole, Brian Cossan, James Hlanguyo, Ashad Sibiya, Tazwa Zibuke and Takudzwa Mubohera – were convicted by a Chipinge magistrate and were slapped with suspended jail terms and community service sentences.

The six had their results withheld, a development confirmed by school head, Mr Stanley Thondlana.

The school has been approached by the six to query for their results, a process being followed by many schools in the province.

Said Ms Dlamini: “A total of 195 candidates had their results withheld for the ‘A’ Level 2022 examination session. Results are withheld in cases of suspected malpractice. This indicates that the results cannot be issued at present, but may follow after investigations are conducted. The centre or school will be informed of the outcome.

“If a candidate wishes to make a query of their results, there is a provision to do so within 42 days from the release of the results. This should be done in writing through the school. Candidates who have been found guilty of examination malpractice can register to sit in another session and write their examinations.”

ZIMSEC issued a statement on October 17, 2022, informing the nation that some candidates had pre-access to some question papers.

Another statement was issued on October 20, 2022, giving an update on the investigations into the matter.

The leaked question papers were shared on various social media platforms, including WhatsApp and Telegram.

In light of the leakages, Ms Dlamini said ZIMSEC has tightened the security of question papers, whether during transit to exam centres or when they get there, adding that the police will remain on guard to wipe out any residual unscrupulous elements within the chain.

Deputy Manicaland Provincial Education Director, Mr Simon Muganhu said while every exam cycle is synonymous with missing results, the numbers have gone up, adding that the rot is likely to be worse at ‘O’ Level.

“It becomes exceptional if at all exam results are not withheld, but this year, it was worse because a number of schools in Manicaland were involved in exam malpractices. In cases where the misdemeanour is prosecuted and conviction secured, the results will be cancelled. Since ‘A’ Level results are a stepping stone to tertiary education, it means the affected candidates will not be able to proceed until they acquire clean results.

“A significant number of schools in Mutare, Rusape and Chipinge were implicated and some cases are before the courts while others wereu concluded. The rot is likely to be worse at ‘O’ Level because that is where many cases were reported,” said Mr Muganhu.

However, school heads have blamed ZIMSEC for the recurring examination leakages that seem to be undermining the integrity of the country’s public examinations.

National Association of Secondary Heads (NASH) chair, Mr Arthur Maphosa is on record saying the leakage of examinations is unfair on candidates, teachers and parents who would have worked hard to prepare for the examinations, only for them to be nullified. —Manica Post

Minor Drowns In Sewage Tank

Trategy struck the sprawling suburb of Vengere in Rusape when a Grade Five learner drowned in an un-barricaded septic tank pit, much to the chagrin of residents who have been calling on the local authority to complete the project.
The Manica Post understands that a group of young boys teamed up on Sunday for a swimming expedition at the pool.

Sadly one of them drowned.

Police identified the deceased as Shelton Chagwedera (10) who was doing Grade Five at Vengere Primary School.

The pool is behind Vengere Primary School, off the dusty Chiduku Road, where Rusape Town Council is constructing a community septic tank.

Shelton was buried at his parents’ Buhera rural home on Tuesday.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed that Shelton was swimming with other boys when tragedy struck.

“On January 29, 2023, at the G-Section of Vengere, Shelton Chagwedera (10) and his friends were swimming in a disused pit and drowned.

“One of his friends rushed to inform Ms Shelly Sakala, who made a police report.

Police attended the scene, retrieved the body and conveyed it to Rusape General Hospital for a post-mortem,” said Inspector Muzondo.

Shelton’s father, Mr Edwin Taurai Chagwedera laboured to restrain his tears as he spoke to The Manica Post.- state media

Mining Dynamics

By A Correspondent| Lack of sound sponsorship and basic empowerment skills are among the main problems affecting artisanal miners.

Lack of insurance is another factor affecting miners.

In a bid to empower and equip miners with essential skills, Three Wingers Enterprises, a Zimbabwean company that focuses on mining consultancy, has embarked on offering theoretical and practical assistance to miners.

See presentation below:

SMART MINING OR SPONSORSHIP

Artisanal mining is sustained by what is commonly called sponsorship, sponsors bring money , food , diesel , explosives , headgears and expertise.

They either bring all or one of them to help miner owner and workers achieve what they couldn’t do on their own .

Bringing all increases risks of huge loses but decreases chances of losing when you indeed make money . Basically sponsorship is the unrecognised life blood of Artisanal mining directly or indirectly. It ranges from formal agreements, informal written to equipment hire loan , truck loan , milling loan even informal cash loan of mouth watering amounts passed within two parties without any writing on paper .

Those that are usually paid back come with huge profits of over 100% those who are not paid back usually disappear for ever .

We once wanted to do a video documentary of how it disappear or multiple by giving a full recorded mining activity from day one unfortunately resources limited us . In these series we will first list in this article reasons why some of the sponsorship monies are not paid back then cover in detail explain how it works .

REASONS FOR FAILURE TO PAY BACK SPONSORSHIP IN EXACT ORDER
1 under sponsorship
2 lack of knowledge of Artisanal mining
3 improper monitoring tools
4 lack of insurance ( guarantee)
5 hitting a gold dry spell
6 failing to include all parties when signing.

1 UNDER SPONSOR
This is a situation whereby you sponsor with insufficient funds and leave key areas of the transaction to make it a success unattended risking low returns or encouraging other co-sponsors to be included without your knowledge to come in with better understanding of mining thereby taking you out of the picture.
Before you sponsor ask questions that would clearly paint the picture of exactly how much is the total cost of the transaction who covers what and what is expected of you how long it will take ( always multiply their estimated time by 3 ) . Sometimes what the miner owner needs is money for personal use let that be spelled out clearly know what you are getting into most things used at the mine are found in all major towns in Zimbabwe. Inorder to reduce risks look for a mining consultancy company to do analysis and agreements writing for you at a fee .

Below is a general list of first level mining and general prices then lastly available ongoing mines ready for sponsorships
1 compressor hire 10% of proceeds
2diesel 200litres
3 explosives set 3boxes 1000usd
4 Food 150usd
5 Petty cash 100usd
6 ore transportation and permits paid after process .

List of sponsorship opportunities
1 mining consultant company 3000usd long term engagement terms discussed
2 repairing tanks 1500usd longterm with minimum returns 300usd per month .

3 explosives and diesel x 4mines
4 mine open full scale joint venture open budget
5 Lithium mines both joint venture and purchase.

Injuries Frustrate Billiat

Khama Billiat has openly admitted that the injury layoff he is enduring has left him frustrated.

The Zimbabwean midfielder suffered an injury prior to the 2022 FIFA World Cup break, and he is yet to feature for Kaizer Chiefs since the return of football.

He last played in Amakhosi’s 1-0 win over rivals Orlando Pirates in a Soweto derby in October.

Billiat made a slight progress in his recovery after returning to light training four weeks ago, but aggravated the injury and is back on the sidelines.

Speaking to FARPost, the former Warriors international said: “Being injured of course is frustrating especially when it takes longer than what you expected. – Soccer24 Zimbabwe

“Africa Will Never Host World Cup Again”

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter believes Africa will never host the World Cup again in his lifetime.

Blatter led the world football governing body from 1998-2015 and helped in the organisation of the continent’s first ever global tournament which happened in South Africa in 2010.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Robert Marawa on South African radio station 947, as cited by the EWN website, the former football administrator said:

“Africa and South Africa organised the best-ever World Cup because it was done with a big heart and everyone was happy. Unfortunately, there won’t be another World Cup in Africa in my life.”

The 86-year-old criticised the shift towards Asia and the Middle East, claiming their involvement in hosting global tournaments is all about money.

He said: “With 48 teams in the World Cup, you need more than one country to organise the tournament, which is totally wrong. The movements taking place in football are towards Asia and Arabic countries because there is a lot of money.”

Blatter added that current FIFA president Gianni Infantino is “destroying his legacy” and is not showing any respect to him and the organisation.

“What we have created in the last 30 or 40 years is wonderful, and he (Infantino) wants to get rid of it because he wants to remove any trace of me in the organisation,” the Swiss added.

Blatter is currently banned from all football activities by FIFA fallowing his involvement in corruption during his tenure.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Nakamba Arrives At Luton Town

Murewa Siblings Die Of Food Poisoning

By- Two Murehwa siblings have died after eating vegetables that were poisoned.

The bodies of Natasha Nhete (7) and her brother Takunda (3) of Hakata village, Chief Mangwende, were taken to Murehwa District Hospital for post-mortem after they died due to suspected food poisoning.
Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachi Wednesday confirmed the incident.
“The matter is under investigations and the bodies were taken to Murehwa Hospital for post-mortem. We suspect that the children could have died due to food poisoning,” Chazovachi said.
It is reported that on January 26, the deceased’s grandmother Alicia Muza (41) prepared sadza and vegetables from a nearby garden. About three hours after the meal, the children started vomiting uncontrollably.
The following day, Muza took her grandchildren to hospital but they died while on the way. She then took them back home before notifying police.

Mwonzora’s Empire Collapses

By- In what seems to be the end of the country’s once most vibrant opposition, MDC, a faction led by suspended MDC-T vice President Elias Mudzuri, Thursday held a press conference in Harare, signalising the formation of a splinter.

The group said it was aggrieved by many issues, including a “shambolic” national congress.

MDC-T last month suspended Mudzuri, Norest Marara, Gift Konjana, John Nyika, Den Moyo, Edwin Dzambara, and Edwin Kakora allegedly for breaking party rules, having illegal meetings, and undermining the democratic procedures of the organisation.
Watch the video below for more:

During the presser, the group said since the passing of MDC’s founding leader, Morgan the party degenerated into chaos and lost its ethos and values.
Addressing the media, Mudzuri said the party was violating the principles of democracy.
He said the national congress led by Mwonzora is null and void as it did not follow the MDC-T constitution.
Mudzuri said his group seeks to restore order in the MDC-T party. He said consultations with all structures of the party are in the process in a bid to map a way forward for the party.
Asked why the electorate should trust a party that is going through a leadership crisis a few months before the election, Mudzuri said members of the MDC were not ready for any election. He said members were not consulted when a congress meant to choose their representatives were chosen.
He said they intend to build proper and vibrant structures.

Top Judge Survives Assassination

By- High Court judge Justice Emilia Muchawa has survived a shooting incident outside her Harare home.

The shooting happened Thursday night.

The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has confirmed the incident.

Daniel Nemukuyu, the JSC spokesperson, said there was a scare of attempted robbery.

“We can confirm that there was scare of attempted robbery on the judge and the matter was reported to the police. Police are investigating the case and we will hear from them on what really transpired,” said Nemukuyu.

ZEPs Put Zim Embassy Under Pressure

By-The Zimbabwean embassy in South Africa is expected to launch a strategic plan for the return of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) holders.

South Africa cancelled the ZEP facility last year stating that holders will not be allowed to reside, work or learn in that country beyond 30 June 2023 if they cannot find alternative legal permission to live there.

About 180 000 Zimbabweans face deportation.

Several lobby groups met last week at the University of Cape Town to discuss the upcoming court bid to oppose the government’s decision to scrap the ZEP.

A lawyer representing permit holders, Advocate Simba Chitando, told SABC News that the Zimbabwean government is not responsible for the decision to terminate the ZEP. He added:

In my view, all the Zim government can do is make provisions to accept the Zim nationals who may want to return to Zimbabwe. It looks like the Zim government is saying that for those who wish to return, I got the sense that it is a voluntary exercise, and they are doing what any government would do when there is a crisis in a foreign country, to make provisions for the return of its own people.

South Africa’s cancellation of special permits for foreign nationals is part of a broad exercise of reviewing its immigration policies to manage an influx of economic migrants.

It is viewed as the government’s response to intensified calls and efforts by South African nationals who have over the years been calling for the ejection of foreign nationals whom they argue were taking their jobs and business opportunities.

Imbewu Actress Says Her Online Identity Was Stolen

“Imbewu” actress Jailoshini Naidoo recently took to her social media accounts to inform her friends, fans and followers that she has had her online identity stolen.

Naidoo shared that a hacker had made a fake WhatsApp account using her Instagram profile picture and was asking people to invest money in trade, promising “great returns”.

She wrote on social media: “PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS NOT ME…. IT IS A FAKE PROFILE!!! I WILL NEVER ASK ANYBODY TO INVEST MONEY INTO ANYTHING!!! PLEASE IGNORE OR REPORT THESE FAKE ACCOUNTS! DO NOT ENTERTAIN IT IN ANY WAY!!!”

She added that she had received many messages from people asking whether the profile was hers.

“It’s NOT ME!!! They’re using my Insta pic pretending to be me! There are so many other fake tik tok accounts as well using a variety of my pics from my Insta & FB accounts and my name ( passing it off as me)

“This one in particular takes u straight into a WhatsApp no with my IG pic (again pretending to be me) luring you into investing money to trade that will apparently give you great returns!

“Again it’s NOT ME!!! Please be careful and aware of these frauds!?????? I’m appalled at how devious some people can be!?,” ended the caption.

Online identity theft is becoming rife and Naidoo is not the only celebrity to experience it.

Mudzuri et al. Form Another MDC Party

By- A group led by suspended MDC-T vice President Elias Mudzuri, Thursday held a press conference in Harare, signalising the formation of a splinter opposition party.

South Africa Sponsorship Of Tottenham Hotspur Generates Debate

The mooted R1billion sleeve sponsorship deal that SA Tourism wants to sign with English Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur was a “potentially brilliant” business deal, sports marketing and tourism research experts believe.

SA Tourism says the three year deal would attract millions of soccer loving fans from around the world to South Africa, boosting global arrival numbers for the country.

Tourism SA says the fans would also spend global currency in the country, giving businesses a major boost.

Professor Michael Goldman, a sports marketing expert the from San Francisco University in the US, said the deal was “potentially brilliant” in that SA Tourism would spend less than 30% of its R1.3bn budget.

“Potentially it is a brilliant business deal … I think R300 million a year, think about it as a media spend, instead of putting that money on CNN or Sky or Al Jazeera, SA Tourism will potentially be spending less than 30% (of the) R1.3bn that the Treasury gives them to do this kind of thing around the world to attract tourists, spending 30% less of that budget…”, Goldman said in an interview with Talk Radio 702.

He said Spurs had 20 million fans in the UK alone was an appealing market.

“One percent of 20 million fans, that is 200 000 potential visitors to South Africa. That is half of the number of UK tourists currently coming to South Africa.”

He said Tourism SA could recover the money in a short space of time, considering that each tourist spent an average of R10 000.

Another expert in tourism research, Professor Peet van der Merwe from the North West University, believes that the money could have been better spent on other initiatives.

“We know that big-event tourism brings in a lot of revenue – it creates jobs and has a development function. So, to paint it in broad strokes, I think such an approach is a good idea.

“But, as far as I can discern from the Tottenham saga and the contract that is intended to be signed, the focus will largely be on the branding of South Africa at games, on their equipment and on their kit,“ Van der Merwe said in a statement.

“This is all well and good, but, I don’t really see any games being played here. I see there are training camps, but ideally we would like to see Tottenham playing games in South Africa which we can market for South Africans as well as in our neighbour states, who I am convinced would like to watch such games…“

On Thursday, Tourism SA’s acting CEO Themba Khumalo hit back at critics in a fiery press conference, saying there was no deal yet with Tottenham Hotspur, but also saying they were forging ahead with the deal.

He said they approached Spurs as it was the only top team in the Premier League that did not have a tourism partner.

Khumalo said that should the deal go through, it would reach 661 million people who watch the game live.

IOL earlier reported that Khumalo said there was a conversation currently under way, but the story was leaked to derail their own considerations.

“A question was floated around: Did the board go to the UK? Yes, the board went to the UK. I was part of the trip. We went; you have to do due diligence on any single thing that you do.

“Certain board members went, we had a look, and we were persuaded that this was a good opportunity. We came back and it went through the board process rigour,” he said.

He said the matter was before Tourism SA on January 27 and additional time was needed to deliberate further on the deal.

“The full board then met at 8pm on Tuesday. This story was already out before the board even met to have the conversation. I am saying this, to say the version of the story that you have been told is not true. It was leaked out of context.

“This whole thing could have been avoided if we just had a conversation about why we are doing this. The intent of the leak was not to aid economic recovery of the country. It was something else that has got nothing to do with the mandate that is in the Tourism Act…”

He said the board met and made a conditional approval, citing that it believes the deal was commercially “making sense”, but it needed to be taken to all stakeholders, including Tourism Minister Lindiwe Sisulu.

He said before Sisulu was consulted, the story made headlines.

FULL THREAD: RBZ Monetary Policy Measures Not Enough: Economist

1/The RBZ presented its monetary policy statement (MPS). The RBZ reduced interest rate from 200% to 150% p.a; reduced domestic export retention from 20% to 15%; reduced export retention from 40% to 25%; etc. Although these measures are in the right direction, they aren’t enough

2/As a run up to the MPS, I submitted the following suggestions: reduction of interest rate from 200% to 80 – 100%; scrap 20% domestic export retention to promote deposits of USD; eliminate 40% export retention. In the MPS, RBZ acknowledge that +70% of transactions are in USD

3/It defies logic to maintain both domestic and export retentions when the economy has dollarised. The 15% new domestic export retention will not enough deposits of FX since firms will suffer exchange rate losses especially in the face of exchange rate disparities

4/ The 150% interest is too steep- this will continue to encourage firms to borrow in USDs at the expense of the ZWL, that is, reinforcing use of USD while at the same time creating a new problem of fake USD or artificial USD (RTGS) – this is taking us back to 2013 – 2018 period

5/ Going forward, in subsequent MPC meetings, I strongly advise the RBZ to use hard data to analyse the nexus between: – maintenance of 15% domestic export retention & USD deposits & the possibility of removing the 15% retention – 150% interest rate, inflation, dollarisation &

6/ implications of reducing it to 80 – 100%. – maintaining 25% export retention & export competitiveness -Most importantly, the RBZ has to come up with a clear road map of the de-dollarisation strategy. At the moment, the current measures are reinforcing full dollarization

7/ The Ministry of Finance, as recommended by the RBZ in today’s MPS, must reinforce value for money in all Govt procurement. I would like to also add that the Ministry of Finance must pay their service providers regularly & avoid huge once off payments which shock the market

Africa Will Never Host World Cup Again In My Lifetime: Blatter

Injuries “Kill” Billiat Career

Manchester United Star Mason Greenwood Cleared Of Rape Charges

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has had all charges against him dropped.

The 21-year-old forward faced allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault. All three charges related to the same woman.

The decision has “not been taken lightly”, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

The investigation began just over a year ago in January 2022. A trial date had been set for 27 November this year.

In a statement, GMP said “criminal proceedings” had been “discontinued by the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service)”.

Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, GMP’s head of public protection, said it was “only fair” that the force publicised the latest development given the “significant media coverage of this case”.

She added: “The investigation team has remained in regular contact with the legal team, providing any updates of note, and so understand the rationale for the discontinuation of proceedings at this stage, and that this decision has not been taken lightly.

“Despite the media and public’s interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in any further detail.”

Ms Kerr did however appeal to people who felt they were, or might have been, a victim, reiterating GMP’s “commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls”.

She continued: “An ever-increasing number of officers are receiving specialist training and the force is more consistently utilising tools, available via the criminal justice system, to keep people safe and care for victims.

“If you feel you are or might be a victim, please don’t let this case put you off asking for help.”

A CPS spokesperson said: “We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review.

“In this case, a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.

“We have explained our decision to all parties. We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met.”

When contacted by Sky Sports News, Manchester United did not comment. Greenwood remains suspended by United.

United announced on January 30 last year he would not return to training or play any matches “until further notice”.

The Bradford-born player came through the United academy and made his senior debut in a Champions League victory away to Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019.

He has one senior cap for England, playing in the Nations League match against Iceland in September 2020.

Key Facts About Cervical Cancer Prevention

Key facts

Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer among women globally, with an estimated 604 000 new cases and 342 000 deaths in 2020.

About 90% of the new cases and deaths worldwide in 2020 occurred in low- and middle-income countries (1).

Two human papillomavirus (HPV) types (16 and 18) are responsible for nearly 50% of high grade cervical pre-cancers
HPV is mainly transmitted through sexual contact and most people are infected with HPV shortly after the onset of sexual activity. More than 90% of them clear the infection eventually.

Women living with HIV are 6 times more likely to develop cervical cancer compared to women without HIV.

Vaccination against HPV and screening and treatment of pre-cancer lesions is a cost-effective way to prevent cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer can be cured if diagnosed at an early stage and treated promptly.

Comprehensive cervical cancer control includes primary prevention (vaccination against HPV), secondary prevention (screening and treatment of pre-cancerous lesions), tertiary prevention (diagnosis and treatment of invasive cervical cancer) and palliative care.

Overview

Worldwide, cervical cancer is the fourth most frequent cancer in women with an estimated 604 000 new cases in 2020. Of the estimated 342 000 deaths from cervical cancer in 2020, about 90% of these occur in low- and middle-income countries. Women living with HIV are 6 times more likely to develop cervical cancer compared to women without HIV, and an estimated 5% of all cervical cancer cases are attributable to HIV (2). Moreover, in all world regions the contribution of HIV to cervical cancer falls disproportionately on younger women.

In high-income countries, programmes are in place which enable girls to be vaccinated against HPV and women to get screened regularly and treated adequately. Screening allows pre-cancerous lesions to be identified at stages when they can easily be treated.

In low-and middle-income countries, there is limited access to these preventative measures and cervical cancer is often not identified until it has further advanced and symptoms develop. In addition, access to treatment of cancerous lesions (for example, cancer surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy) may be limited, resulting in a higher rate of death from cervical cancer in these countries.

The high mortality rate from cervical cancer globally (age standardized rate among women: 13.3/100 000 in 2020) could be reduced by effective interventions at different stages of life.

HPV and cervical cancer
A large majority of cervical cancer (more than 95%) is due to the human papillomavirus (HPV).

HPV is the most common viral infection of the reproductive tract. Most sexually active women and men will be infected at some point in their lives, and some may be repeatedly infected. More than 90% of the infected populations eventually clear the infection.

Cervical cancer is by far the most common HPV-related disease. Nearly all cases of cervical cancer can be attributed to HPV infection.

Although most HPV infections clear up on their own and most pre-cancerous lesions resolve spontaneously, there is a risk for all women that HPV infection may become chronic and pre-cancerous lesions progress to invasive cervical cancer.

It takes 15 to 20 years for cervical cancer to develop in women with normal immune systems. It can take only 5 to 10 years in women with weakened immune systems, such as those with untreated HIV infection.

Cervical cancer control: a comprehensive approach
The Global strategy towards eliminating cervical cancer as a public health problem, adopted by the World Health Assembly in 2020, recommends a comprehensive approach to cervical cancer prevention and control. The recommended actions include interventions across the life course.

Mwonzora’s MDC Spilts

By- The MDC-T led by Senator Douglas Mwonzora has split.

The party’s breakaway group, fronted by Elias Mudzuri, held a press conference in Harare Thursday and announced the confusion.

Mnangagwa Sells Country To Own Friends

Tinashe Sambiri| The Zanu PF leader Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa has sold the country to his friends in exchange for political survival.

This was said by CCC youth taskforce spokesperson Stephen Sarkozy Chuma.

Chuma, who has been sparring with the Zanu PF leader over the past two months, took a swipe at the ageing Mr Mnangagwa, accusing him of mortgaging the country.

“ED Mnangagwa is busy mortgaging our country for his personal gain.

Belarus is one of the most poorest countries in Eastern Europe.

Understanding Dynamics In Mining

Mwonzora Is A Selfish Leader:Mudzuri

By A Correspondent| The fired MDC-T vice president Engineer Elias Mudzuri has described MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora as selfish.

The former Harare Mayor was speaking at a press conference in Harare where he was flanked some of the fired national executive members that included Norest Marara and Gift Konjana.

While addressing the press conference, Mudzuri said the opposition party has now lost it’s values to leaders who are driven by selfish agenda.

“We all saw how the congress was conducted. It only lasted only 1 and half hours. Compare it with the ANC Congress which took around 5 days.

” Nothing happened at that congress,a congress should see policies pronouncements being made. But we are being led by people with selfish agendas,” bemoaned Mudzuri.

This was also echoed by fired MDC-T Mashonaland East province Gift Konjana who claimed that Mwonzora is ‘dismantling the party’s values’ because of his selfishness.

” Our party is a social democracy but you have seen how Mwonzora is dismantling the party’s values because of his selfishness.

” We all witnessed how the recalls were instigated by him, “charged Konjana.

Mudzuri  then confessed that he was not supportive of the recalls that were done by the MDC-T.

” I have never supported recalls from day one and preached unity, “confessed Mudzuri.

The embattled MDC-T members say its now the responsibility of the party structures  to reconstitute and reorganize themselves  to serve the party from being led by selfish leaders with little disregard for constitutionalism.

South Africa Ban Old Zim Wagons

By A Correspondent- South Africa has banned Zimbabwean rail wagons from its territory citing the old wagons which raises high risk of derailment, it has emerged.

The development was confirmed by National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) general manager Respina Zinyanduko Monday while answering questions before Parliament’s Transport Portfolio Committee.

“The challenge about our failure to send our wagons to South Africa is that our wagons are old,” said Zinyanduko.

“Because the wagons are old, SA does not want them on their rail lines because they say they have a high risk of derailment because of their age. They do not want to risk damaging their tracks.”

The NRZ general manager however said other regional countries had not taken the same position as South Africa.

“If you look at other countries like DRC, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique, our wagons are going all the way to these countries without any challenges,” she said.

“So, the only challenge with SA is our wagons. They say if we buy new wagons, they will allow them into SA.

Their wagons (SA) are actually coming into Zimbabwe. Because our wagons are sub-standard, NRZ is now using SA’s wagons to carry goods to SA.”

According to the GM, although the parastatal was making gross profit over the past two years, its railway system needed new wagons as most of the its equipment had gone beyond its average life span of 40 years.

Of the 68 main line locomotives, 14 of these were not working and the rest needed upgrading or replacement,” she said.

Most of them have outlived their 25 years life span. Wagons have also outlived their 40-year life span and most had gone beyond 60 years.”

Government, which wholly owns the company, has not supported NRZ meaningfully with most of the money allocated in annual budgets not getting disbursed.

Elections Possibly In July, Mnangagwa Tells Dictator Friend

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has hinted that the much anticipated harmonised elections will be held in July adding he is confident of his party’s victory.

He was speaking during the signing ceremony of the instruments of cooperation between Belarus and Zimbabwe at the State House on Tuesday.

“Zimbabwe will soon hold elections, sometime in July, possibly,” he said.

“Let me assure you that since, Independence, Zimbabwe has never omitted to hold elections. Every five years we have elections and the ruling party Zanu-PF has been winning all those elections and we will continue winning.”

He added; “Last time about 59 parties contested and we had 23 presidential contestants. This is beautiful. The more the people who want to become presidents, the merrier it is.

“I don’t know who wants to contest this but the contest is open to everyone. Zanu-PF is confident that we will win.”

Mnangagwa’s remarks follow claims by main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party that Zanu-PF is hesitant to hold the plebiscite due to fear of losing evidenced by rampant political violence across the country.

According to rights groups 2,000 cases of violence were reported last year including two deaths of activists from the opposition party.

Mnangagwa however, maintained that his government was peaceful.

“Zimbabwe is friend to all and enemy to none. Those who want to make enemies out of us, it’s their own ndaba, it’s their own fault,” he said.

The event was graced by Belarus president Alexander Lukashenko and his delegation comprising ministers among other top government officials.

His visit is aimed at boosting “strong cooperation in political, economic, mining, agriculture and disaster risk management” between the two countries.

Speaking at the same event, Belarusia’s authoritarian Lukashenko pledged to support Mnangagwa.

“There is a country called Belarus which will be always be ready to give you a helping hand if need be .

“Mr President my dear brother I would like to thank you for everything for your warm welcome and organizing this visit.

“We are going to work together, Belarus is going to help you in everything you need,” said Lukashenko.

He also said, “We have very high respect for the people of Zimbabwe. We are grateful to the people of Zimbabwe and I would like to emphasise that we are coming to Africa not to bring chaos … but to work for the benefit of those.”

Allies Turn Swords Against Mnangagwa Over ZEC Delimitation Report

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s allies that are members of a platform ostensibly set up to improve the country’s electoral environment after the disputed 2018 polls have turned their swords on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) after it produced a contentious delimitation report.

Zec is finalising the delimitation report after a parliamentary ad-hoc committee raised a number of alleged anomalies in the delimitation process.

The Political Actors Dialogue (Polad), which is composed of fringe opposition party leaders that contested the 2018 polls and was set up by Mnangagwa, said the divisions in Zec that arose after the draft delimitation report did not bode well for credible elections.

Seven commissioners refused to append their signatures to the report after claiming that it violated the constitution. The commissioners accused Zec chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba of not consulting them.

Chigumba cut a lone figure during appearances in Parliament and at State House where she received Mnangagwa’s recommendations on the delimitation report last week.

Polad’s governance and legislative agenda chairperson Lovemore Madhuku said there must be evidence that the delimitation outcome was a collective effort from Zec commissioners.

“The preliminary delimitation report doesn’t pass the test set out in the constitution. Polad regards it as a failure on the part of Zec,” Madhuku said.

“Polad is concerned about the internal governance of Zec. Under our constitution, Zec is a corporate body consisting of nine commissioners.

“The delimitation process cannot be the work of one or two commissioners; there must be clear evidence that all commissioners are involved at every stage of the process.

“This is essential for the integrity and credibility of Zec. Polad would like to see public appearances of Zec commissioners at all platforms where Zec is either presenting to, or receiving from, the president reports relating to the delimitation process.

“Zec must use all the remaining stages to demonstrate in public the involvement of all commissioners.”

Since it was set up, Polad has been measured in its criticism of Mnangagwa’s administration and institutions such as Zec. Its heavy rebuke of the commission could indicate that it has achieved little in its efforts to change Zimbabwe’s election landscape.

Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa, who narrowly lost to Mnangagwa in the disputed 2018 polls refused to join Polad saying it was a waste of time.

Madhuku said Polad also queried the formula used by Zec in drawing constituency boundaries.

Stewart Bank Opens New Remittance Centre

Steward Bank, Zimbabwe’s largest bank by depositors, last month opened a remittance centre in Harare which caters for both international and local remittances.

The state-of-the-art remittance centre, where customers can access funds sent from within Zimbabwe or abroad, is situated at the Eastgate Complex in Harare.

Customers can collect money sent via SasaiRemit, EcoCashRemit, StewardRemit, WorldRemit and many others.

Market analysts believe the new outlet is part of Steward Bank’s strategy to provide an integrated retail and digital customer experience designed to make it convenient for customers to collect their foreign currency in a clean, safe and secure environment.

In the past few years, Steward Bank has partnered with several global money transfer agents, including HelloPaisa, MoneyGram and Mama Money — among many others – to facilitate the free flow of remittances into the country.

The World Bank estimates that remittance flows into Zimbabwe reached US$2 billion last year against US$1.4 billion in 2021 and $1 billion in 2020.

Steward Bank Chief executive officer Courage Mashavave said the financial institution recently introduced intra-bound remittances and scaled up Steward Remit to enable access to foreign currency. Mashavave said in his festive season message to customers:

We are collaborating with agencies across the country, in areas such as Mutoko and Murehwa. Compared to this time last year, we have tripled our Customer Satisfaction Index, demonstrating that we are increasing our customers’ expected service and product quality.

Meanwhile, StewardRemit, which allows real-time US dollar money transfers across the country for both Steward Bank account holders and non-account holders, has reduced its transaction charges.

The StewardRemit send-money charge was reduced from 5% to 3% of the transaction amount, inclusive of 2% IMT tax.
