Madhuku Challenges ZEC, Exposes impending Rigging

By- National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), President Lovemore Madhuku, has blasted the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for charging exorbitant fees to candidates and parties to contest next year’s elections.

ZEC set candidate nomination fees at US$20 000, US$1 000 and US$200 for aspiring presidential, Members of Parliament, and councillors, respectively.

Speaking during a press briefing held in Harare on Monday, Madhuku said ZEC could not make fundamental decisions regarding who can be candidates.

He added that individuals have political rights guaranteed in Zimbabwe’s Constitution (Section 67) to campaign for office and not to be shut out of electoral processes. Said Madhuku:

Who is ZEC to be coming up with these decisions? These decisions ought to be made in the constitution as to who qualifies.

Our constitution does not say amounts that have to be paid as it just talks about the requirements one must meet to contest.

Even when you go through the Electoral Act it provides for some nominal fees that ought to be paid but what ZEC has done is substantive.

It’s a power ZEC is exercising as if it were a legislative body yet it doesn’t have the power to do that.

If we allow ZEC to have that power, then there will be no need for us to have a parliament.

Surely the regulations that ZEC has brought are the kind of regulations that ought to be debated by the public and there was no such public debate.

No Zimbabwean was ever asked to express a view. We didn’t even know this was in the pipeline.

Madhuku claimed that ZEC was taking Zimbabwe back to the dark years of the colonial era when a 1961 constitution disenfranchised black people because they did not have properties to qualify as voters. He said:

The colonial constitution would pretend Blacks were allowed to vote and were allowed to be MPs but one had to show a property qualification and own something.

It was known Blacks would not own that property. If you have US$20 000, this is a property qualification where you show you have some money.

We have already fought for these rights. ZEC must simply run elections not for them to go this far.

Our blame goes straight and exclusively to ZEC. We believe in this case; it misunderstood its powers and that’s a sign of incompetence.

… Our position as the NCA is this is ridiculous, totally unacceptable, unconstitutional and undemocratic.

Sikhala Denied Bail Again

By- The opposition CCC top officials, Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole, have been denied bail again.

The two are being charged with obstructing the course of justice.

Harare magistrate Mrs Feresi Chakanyuka dismissed the duo’s application after noting no changed circumstances from June 17 when their first bail application was also dismissed.
Sikhala and Sithole, through their lawyers Mr Jeremiah Bamu and Ms Beatrice Mtetwa had mounted a fresh bail bid based on fluxion of time.
They had also argued that ZimLive had written a letter confirming that Sikhala had not posted a video on the Online platform.
The two had also told the court that there were other people who were arrested for causing the violence that occurred in Nyatsime following the killing of Moreblessing Ali.
In their application, they had argued that some owners of the trucks that the State alleges were hired by Sithole were also arrested in connection with the violence.
The State led by Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti had opposed the application.

Odinga Challenges Presidential Results

By Reuters – Veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga has filed a case with Supreme Court challenging Kenya’s presidential election results.

In the petition, Odinga asks the court to nullify the vote’s outcome on several grounds, including a mismatch between the turnout figures and the result and alleges the election commission failed to tally ballots from 27 constituencies, rendering the result unverifiable and unaccountable.

“We have enough evidence to prove all of the criminality that occurred,” Odinga told a news conference after the filing. “We are confident that in the end, the truth will be revealed.”

This is Odinga’s fifth stab at the presidency; he blamed several previous losses on rigging. Those disputes triggered violence that claimed more than 100 lives in 2017 and more than 1,200 lives in 2007.

Last week the election commissioner declared Odinga’s rival, Deputy President William Ruto, had won the Aug. 9 election by a slim margin, but four out of seven election commissioners dissented, saying the tallying of results had not been transparent.

The commission, its chairman and Ruto have four days to respond to Odinga’s claims through court filings.

Last week Odinga said the results were a “travesty” but said he would settle the dispute in court and urged supporters to remain peaceful. His supporters have said the results were the outcome of intentional fraud by election authorities. The election commission has denied any wrongdoing. read more

In 2017, the Supreme Court overturned the election result and ordered a re-run, which Odinga boycotted, saying he had no faith in the election commission.

This time, Odinga is backed by the political establishment. President Uhuru Kenyatta endorsed Odinga’s candidacy after falling out with Ruto after the last election.

Kenya’s opposition leader and presidential candidate Raila Odinga, of the Azimio La Umoja (Declaration of Unity) One Kenya Alliance, and his running-mate Martha Karua arrive to file a petition challenging the presidential election result at the Supreme Court in Nairobi, Kenya August 22, 2022.

At stake is control of East Africa’s wealthiest and most stable nation, home to regional headquarters for firms like General Electric, Google, and Uber. Kenya also provides peacekeepers for neighbouring Somalia and frequently hosts peace talks for other nations in the turbulent East Africa region.

The case will be heard by the seven-member Supreme Court and presided over by Martha Koome, Kenya’s first female chief justice, who was appointed by Kenyatta last year. read more

The court will next conduct a status conference with all parties to define the hearing schedule and ground rules. The constitution requires judges to issue their decision within 14 days of the lawsuit being filed.

Due to the tight schedule, it normally issues a summary judgment within 14 days, followed by more thorough decisions from each of the seven judges at a later date.

THE DISPUTE

One week ago, electoral commission chairman Wafula Chebukati declared Ruto the winner with 50.49% of the vote against Odinga’s 48.5%.

But minutes earlier, his deputy Juliana Cherera had told media at a separate location that she and three other commissioners disowned the results. read more

She said the elections had been conducted in a proper manner – and most international observers agreed – but that results were erroneously aggregated. read more

Public confusion reigned over the tallying after the Kenyan media suspended a count of 46,229 polling-station level results with around 80% of the vote counted.

The election commission’s website still does not display the correct forms for all 291 constituencies. In some cases, the form is incomplete or only partially loaded, making it impossible for the public to confirm the commission’s count.

SA Employers Terminate Zimbabweans ZEP Holders’ Jobs

By- South African employers have ordered Zimbabwean nationals using the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) to pack their bags and prepare to go back home.

Chief Executive for the National Employers’ Association of South Africa, Gerhard Papenfus, said it is wrong and immoral that thousands of Zimbabweans, who are reliable employees, will lose their jobs. Said Papenfus:

There are different kinds of permits and visas and to make sure that your employees fall under this dispensation then you need to be prepared to terminate those employees’ services at the end of the year which is in our view very wrong.

It’s very unfortunate because these are very valuable employees in the hospital sector so business is very unhappy with this arrangement.

They work very hard and are very reliable. So this is a loss for the country, it’s very wrong and I think it’s immoral. So losing good employees is very difficult.

In November 2021, South Africa’s cabinet decided to end special permits that allow close to 180 000 Zimbabweans to live and work in the country.

The ZEPs were granted to Zimbabweans who moved to South Africa before 2009.

The temporary measure was meant to regularise their presence in the country and allow Zimbabweans access to services such as banking.

The one-year grace period expires at the end of 2022. The SA government says that in December all people under the permit, who fail to get other permits, must leave the country.

Mobilization Of Voters Gathers Momentum

Gift Ostallos Siziba

Back to Basics!

The Citizens Movement’s political Mobilization program has a bias towards young people.

This is informed not just by the fact that this major demographic group is the most affected but also because of its ability to change the concrete realities of the suffering masses of Zimbabwe.

Young people world over have the capacity and the propensity to change society and define society’s collective destiny.

This twinned with a robust political education program can indeed galvanize and organize young people from below.

Bosso, DeMbare Through To Chibuku Quarter Finals

Dynamos are through to the quarterfinals of the Chibuku Super Cup after beating WhaWha 1-0 at National Sports Stadium.

The Glamour Boys started the game pressing high but had to wait longer to create their first meaningful chance. The side made a couple of attacks and forced successive corners that yielded nothing.

On the other end, WhaWha, almost took the lead towards the quarter-hour mark, only to be denied by the woodwork.

The hosts continued to control the pace and were also denied by the bar at the 30th-minute mark.

The match went into halftime with no goals scored.

Dembare came close to goal at the start of the second half, but Emmanuel Paga hit the upright.

After a prolonged spell searching for a breakthrough, the hosts finally broke the deadlock on the 73rd through Trevor Mavunga.

WhaWha failed to get back into the game and succumbed to a loss to bow out of the tournament.

At Gibbo, Highlanders also booked their place after edging Triangle United 1-0, with Stanley Ngala scoring the solitary goal.

Villarreal Stun Atletico Madrid

Villarreal left it late at the Civitas Metropolitano as Unai Emery’s side snatched a win near the end against Atletico Madrid courtesy of strikes by Yeremi Pino and Gerard Moreno.

The Yellow Submarine were the better side throughout. Yannick Carrasco almost scored late on for Atletico, but a spectacular save by Geronimo Rulli kept him out…

Late strikes from Gerard Moreno and Yeremi Pino for Villarreal were enough for the Yellow Submarine to secure their first win over Atletico Madrid in eight league games, as the visitors came out on top 2-0 at the Civitas Metropolitano in La Liga.

Villarreal proved to be the team that were on top for much of the first period, and Unai Emery’s side thought they had taken the lead in the 33rd minute.

A free-kick from deep by Dani Parejo towards the back post was met by a diving header by Juan Foyth, who sent the ball back into the centre of the area for Gerard Moreno, who then rattled the crossbar from a couple of yards out. The forward subsequently got the rebound into the net, but the referee ruled out the goal for handball by the striker.

The home side grew into the game in the second half, but it was Unai Emery’s team who eventually broke the deadlock with just over fifteen minutes to play.

Yeremi Pino capitalised on a lapse in concentration from Atletico wing-back Nahuel Molina to send a shot into the bottom-left corner beyond Jan Oblak.

Los Colchoneros thought they had levelled it just seven minutes later, as Yannick Carrasco’s effort from a couple of yards out was spectacularly saved on the goal-line by Geronimo Rulli. Seconds earlier, Matheus Cunha’s header crashed off the bar.

Molina’s evening went from bad to worse as he was sent off for violent conduct after elbowing the back of Alex Baena’s head in stoppage time.
Villarreal added a second through Gerard Moreno to secure a priceless victory.- Eurosport

Piracy Killing Us – Somandla Ndebele

Veteran sungura musician Somandla “Mafia” Ndebele, who fronts Denda Brothers, is disappointed because music piracy has left artistes poor.

Mafia, as he is popularly referred by his fans, bemoaned that while their profession was energy sapping, their sweats are being enjoyed by street vendors selling their music.

“Our biggest challenge as musicians is the issue of piracy,” Ndebele said.

“We have noted that almost 98% of our music is being sold in the street corners at giveaway prices making it hard for musicians to eke out a living from their sweat.

“One thing of great concern is that fake accounts of musicians are being created on social media, particularly on YouTube and Facebook without the musician’s knowledge.”

The 50-year-old musician added: “My wish is that government should intervene and put a stop to all those selling CDs in the street so that they can save the music industry which is slowly disintegrating due to the effect of the ravaging piracy. If this is done at least musicians can earn a living.”

As a way of showing his anger towards piracy, Ndebele released an album which he named Kurimira Hanga.

Zimbabwe Music Rights Association (Zimura) executive director Polisile Ncube-Chimhini said selling CDs on the streets was illegal.

“Piracy is copyright infringement and it is not confined to the illegal reproduction and sale of pirated discs. It also includes broadcasting music, public performance of music without the authority of the copyright owner,” Ncube-Chimhini said.

“Zimura discourages its clients from using pirated music, we tell them what pirated music is and how they can play music publicly without committing piracy.

“Hence, you will find that most of our clients are no longer using pirated discs but playing via streaming channels.

“We educate our clients against such practices during our licensing activities and through workshops being conducted countrywide, artists are also taught about their rights, that way they can identify and claim ownership of their works where they are pirated and seek redress.”

The Denda Brothers frontman is set to release his 25th album in September that is yet to be named.

“I am planning to release a new six-track album in September, but I haven’t got the title as of now,” he said.

“The album is mainly about social life and I expect it to be a better project than my previous productions.”

The Kwekwe-born and now Dzivaresekwa-based musician started his musical career with Wiriranai Sounds in 1986 where he was the band leader.

He released seven-single such as Chido Chemoyo flip side Mandiomesera (1988), Baba Vevana flip side Nhamo Dzakasiyana (1989) and Phumzile flip side Vakawanda Vakarambana.

However, Ndebele decided to change the name of his band Wiriranai Sounds to Denda Brothers.

“In 1992 I changed my band to Denda Brothers meaning a long spell of illness, therefore, I took it upon myself that my love for music was like that of a sick person with a very long illness which has prolonged for too long, hence the name Denda came into mind,” he said.

“In that same year I released my first album Ndingazviite Sei and the video using the name Denda Brothers and the rest is now history.”

To date Mafia has channelled out 24 great albums such as Ngatifare, Marwadzo, Kuvaka Musha, Zvamauya Zvanaka and Mwoyo Wekurera that he did with Tongai Moyo just to mention a few.

Zimbabweans In SA Holding ZEPs Ordered To Pack Bags

More Woes For Troubled Gokwe-Nembudziya Legislator Mayor Wadyajena

HARARE magistrate Barbra Mateko has ordered the seizure of a fleet of vehicles belonging to embattled Gokwe-Nembudziya legislator Justice Mayor Wadyajena (Zanu-PF) on suspicion that they were purchased with proceeds from Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (Cottco) looting.

The seizure order involves confiscating 24 vehicles, among them trucks and luxurious cars.

Wadyajena’s two luxury vehicles were reportedly impounded by Beitbridge Border Post authorities on Friday and were towed back to Harare as part of a wider probe into the scandal.

The vehicles, a Lamborghini and BMW X6, were impounded at the border amid allegations that he wanted to take them outside the country as the law enforcement agents were in hot pursuit.

Mateko issued the warrant of search and seizure to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) in terms of section 49(b) as read with section 50(1)(a) of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act [Chapter 9:07] that provides for the seizure of all proceeds of
crime.

“These are, therefore, in the State’s name to command you to proceed to Mayor Logistics (Pvt) Ltd and Justice Mayor Wadyajena or any other person in control of the vehicles and therefrom immediately obtain and take into custody the mentioned vehicles and take them to the peace officers and other officers of the law who are bearers of the warrant or other place of safety until the matter is finalised or until you receive further orders from the court,” the seizure warrant read.

Wadyajena, who is out on bail, is being charged together with his company Mayor Logistics.

He appeared together with Cottco managing director Pious Manamike, Maxmore Njanji, Fortunate Molai and Chiedza Danha, the director of Pierpont Moncroix Mauritius, which was allegedly used as a conduit to defraud Cottco.

Allegations are that sometime in 2019, the accused persons connived to defraud Cottco of millions of United States dollars through fictitious purchase of goods allegedly for use by the parastatal.

On January 28, 2019, they formed a shelf company, Pierpont Moncroix (Pvt) registration number 898/2019 in which Danha and Euphrasia Mupedzisi are directors.

On March 14, 2019, Cottco raised an internal stores voucher No 264583 for the supply of 3 200 000, 92-inch special high carbon bale ties to cater for the 2019 ginning season.

However, the purported imported cables never reached Cottco, but rather the money was paid to an American company which deals in trucks.

The company, Supplier Giant Equipment LLC, USA, delivered 25 Freightliner trucks which were subsequently registered under Mayor Logistics.

Wadyajena and his co-accused reportedly defrauded Cottco of over US$5,8 million, the State alleges.

The youthful legislator, who is known for his penchant for super cars and a flashy lifestyle, is accused of using his position as chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Agriculture to armtwist the Cottco bosses into shady deals.

The arrest of the legislator has raised eyebrows considering his alleged close links with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Zanu PF Aligned Vendors Becoming A Menace In Byo

Zanu-PF backed vendors, who recently invaded Fifth Avenue in Bulawayo, illegally allocating themselves trading bays, are accusing the Bulawayo City Council (BCC) of corruption.

The ruling party’s Nehanda district chairperson Josiah Mutangi popularly known as “uMoses wabantu” confessed to allocating bays to the vendors.

This illegal allocation of trading bays, however, has created chaos in the CBD with some areas now impassable.

“We had appealed for vending bays from the council and followed proper procedures of acquiring vending bays, but the council went on to parcel bays to their people,” Mutangi said.

“Why can’t the council open public toilets considering that we have disabled people in our midst who cannot afford to pay for toilets. We do not want to be at Fifth Avenue forever, but the council should look for an alternative for us.”

He claimed that vendors were not engaging in illegal activities but alleged that there were people associated with the council who were selling dangerous drugs around the area.

Mutangi said there were more than 7 000 vendors in the CBD and council officials had a team of agents collecting rentals on their behalf on a daily basis.

“There are council agents collecting the “Hlalani kuhle” money between 12 and 1pm and between 3 and 4pm everyday making it a total of US$2 a day. When one fails to pay, there is a fine of US$11,50,” Mutangi said.

Bulawayo deputy Mayor Mlandu Ncube said council was working on a master plan to deal with illegal vendors occupying Fifth Avenue.

“We have tried to remove illegal vendors from Fifth Avenue, which is not a vending area. We are working on a strategy to deal with them.

“There are no council agents collecting money from vendors. All payments are done at the Revenue Hall,” Ncube said.

Mwonzora Defends ZEC Over New Fees Structure

MDC president, Douglas Mwonzora, has sprang to defend underfire Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for pegging exorbitant candidates fees for the crunch 2023 harmonised elections, describing the move as “justified.”

Gazetted last week, Statutory Instrument (SI) 144 of 2022, prescribes those aspiring to hold office of president to fork out US$20 000 payable in cash or at the prevailing official rate equivalent.

Members of Parliament (MP) contestants will now be asked to pay US$1,000, Senate and Local Authorities US$100 with the same figure paid for election observation.

In an interview with NewZimbabwe.com in Kwekwe at the weekend, Mwonzora said the new fees structure was necessary to decongest the ballot paper with “pretenders.”

“Our ballot paper must be short considering that in 2018 we had 23 presidential candidates, and that’s a challenge. In Kenya they dealt with this issue by creating coalitions,” Mwonzora said.

The exorbitant fees, he added, would bar opportunists from contesting in future polls.

“In Zimbabwe some people think that being a candidate is a way to fundraise. Therefore, by raising aspirants fees is a way of trimming (number of) candidates.

“If you have support enough that you can be a president, party members will be able to fundraise and even raise donations and those monies for parliamentary candidates must be enough. If not it means you are wasting people’s time. This is, indeed, a good development.

“Others have said this will shut out poor candidates, but the money is not coming from individual pockets, its coming from the party. If you do not have 20 000 supporters and you want to be President for which country?” he said rhetorically.

ZEC has also moved to charge US$10 for an electronic copy of the voters’ roll with data on one polling station voters, US$15 for the ward level voters’ roll, US$50 for the constituency voters’ roll, US$150 for the provincial voters’ roll and US$200 for the national voters’ roll.

Arsenal Dismiss Bournemouth

We are smack dab inside the Premier League now and pre-season has been truly left behind. Today’s games brought all the thrills and you can never ever stop marvelling at the twist and turns of the prestigious Premier League!

AFC Bournemouth 0 – 3 Arsenal

Don’t you love it when a plan comes together? Mikel Arterta and Arsenal Technical Director, Edu have been slated online by the Gunners fans for the past year but it seems like they had a plan. It’s all coming together now and Gabriel Jesus is all up in the mix.

The £45 million worth Brazilian seems to be worth every penny so far. He was involved with an assist today for one of Captain Martin Odegaard’s two first half goals. William Saliba scored a peach of a goal in the second half through the crowd in the box. The Gunners totally dominated the game and had a goal disallowed for offside in the second half as well. This is the first time Arsenal have won the first three games of the season since the 2004-05 season.

It’s also the first time they have named an unchanged team since for three games in a row since 2003-04. Zimbabwe’s Jordan Zemura was a bright spark in an otherwise overwhelmed Cherries side.

Tottenham 1 – 0 Wolves

Arsenal’s arch rivals Spurs are kicking on themselves and trying to build up a rhythm for the season. Harry Kane seems to be back on track after last season’s transfer demands. He scored his 185th Premier League goal for Tottenham becoming the leading scorer in the competition for one team.

Sergio Aguero has 184 goals for Manchester City whilst Wayne Rooney has 183 goals for Manchester United. It’s quite clear that Spurs are not yet jelled up but with on their day they could easily tear up any team and they have the players for that. Wolves were threatening, 20 shots, 51% possession but nothing much to write about in the goals column.

Fulham 3 – 2 Brentford

The Bees couldn’t build on their momentum after demolishing Manchester United last week. Fulham were hell bent on winning the game and played with a will to match.

They led at the break by two goals to one with goals from Bobby Reid in the first minute and Joao Paulinha. Cristian Norgaard halved the deficit just before halftime for Brentford. After halftime, Thomas Frank’s men took charge of the game and the tempo changed and their pressure resulted in a goal from Ivan Toney in the 71st minute. But it wasn’t going to end that way, Aleksndar Mitrovic was going to have a say. He scored in the 90th minute to silence his doubters and critics and ultimately gave the three points to the Cottagers.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Kaitano Tembo Charges Frustrate Mighty Brazilians

Sekhukhune United coach Kaitano Tembo has been showered with praise for his half time team talk which turned the game around in their impressive 1-1 draw with Mamelodi Sundowns today.

With the defending champions leading 1-0 at the interval through Namibian hotshot Peter Shalulile’s 45th minute opener, the Zimbabwean tactician delivered a watershed team talk which resulted in his charges coming back into the game.

Babika Nono restored parity just after the restart through man of the match Linda Mntambo and the midfielder lauded Tembo.

“In the first half we gave them all the respect, we kept chasing, we gave the all the possession,” he told SuperSport TV after the game.

“At half-time in the change room, the coach made it clear that we need to be fearless, we need to take the game to them. We’re playing at home, we’ve got nothing to loose. Our second-half performance was really good,” he added.

Sekhukhune did not sit back against a star-studded Masandawa and went toe to toe with them, something which Tembo was happy about.

“For me, I like playing a pressing game because when you playing a pressing game you force your opponents to make mistakes,” the former Dynamos defender said after the game.

From the word go, we went in there, they made a mistake on transition then we scored. So that is my kind of game, I don’t like to sit back and I’m happy with how the lads reacted in the second half,” added Tembo.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Zanu PF Desperate To Thwart People’s Struggle

Tinashe Sambiri| CCC deputy spokesperson Gift Ostallos Siziba has challenged the Zanu PF regime to release jailed party members with immediate effect.

According to Siziba, Job Wiwa Sikhala, Godfrey Karakadzai Sithole and the Nyatsime activists are victims of the regime’s brutality.

Siziba argues the incarceration of Wiwa and the Nyatsime activists is a reflection of Zanu PF desperate measures to thwart the people’s struggle.

See Siziba’s statement:

Job Wiwa Sikhala is a political prisoner. He has been in jail together with other 15 prisoners.

The regime has weaponized the law against its opponent. The abuse of the courts and judiciary to settle political scores is the problem.

I was taken aback to all the arrests that we have endured under the system since 1999.

I was once abducted, tortured and arrested together with Promise Mkwananzi Makomborero Haruzivishe and others.
We stayed in illegal detention for more that 3 months.

The regime wanted us down and out!

That’s their modus operendi.

We refused! We fought and we are still fighting!
There’s no struggle without bruises, there’s no struggle without pain.

They use pre-trial detention to break the spirit of Activists, saw division in the trenches and sponsor cynicism.

Now we have become more clever and ahead in our programming and think-tanking.

It this struggle we forge ahead no matter what.

Never dither, never waiver, never surrender!

Our task is to

  1. Increase the cost of authoritarian rule
  2. Resist any attempts to be co-opted
  3. Guard our zones of autonomy
  4. Continue to create a credible Alternative.

Until then we fight on!

ZEC Says It’s Lawful To Charge USD20,000 Fees

FULL TEXT: It is part of the law for ZEC to charge and receive fees for nomination court to support the electoral processes and candidates to show commitment to the offices they are contesting for.

S.I 144 of 2022

The @ZECzim was previously issuing voters rolls for local authority for free to council candidates , support MPLCs , Conduct Nomination etc. Surely USD100 is fair for the public office for councilors and Senate.

How will one administer the budgets/allocated devolution funds at council if their only qualification & commitment is that they are 18 years old and a Zimbabwean citizen?
It’s important for @ZECzim to promote integrity of the electoral processes which includes the candidates.

To be a councilor the law is clear that you must not be financially insolvent.

Those vying for public office must show commitment as the integrity of our electoral processes are not independent of the integrity of the candidates. This is best practice not only in Zimbabwe.

Surely if you want everyone to be a candidate including chancers that does not enhance democracy and good governance. Check other countries on requirements to run for public office.-Jasper Mangwana, ZEC Spokesperson

Low Numbers At Saba Magacha Gig

He hoped to fill up the Harare International Conference Centre when he launched his seventh album I am Favoured, unfortunately, Sabastain Magacha saw a paltry turnout on Saturday.
Despite the turnout, Magacha was happy saying: “Panoungana vaviri kana vatatu kunaJehova makawanda” (When three or four gather, to Christ you are many).

Sabastian Magacha

Magacha’s parents also attended the launch to support his efforts.

Before the launch, people wondered if the Bhosvo hitmaker would be able to fill the HICC, but because the line-up included Jah Prayzah, Mambo Dhuterere and Madam Boss, who have a huge following, many expected that people would come in their numbers.

However, it was not to be, maybe because the concert clashed with the Ninja President, Winky D’s performance in Glen View 1.

A number of artistes who showed up performed well despite technical glitches with the sound system, especially when Magacha was performing with Herman. The audience could hardly figure out if Herman was singing or lip-syncing.

Top musicians who showed up among others included Dorcas Moyo, Zimpraise Choir, Tinashe Magacha, Mambo Dhuterere — who gave Gringo Junior a platform to showcase his dancing skills and the flamboyant Mudiwa Hood who dished out money to fans who were singing along as he performed.

Top comedians who also supported Magacha included Bee Wezhira, Mama Vee, Mai Titi, Ginimbilite, Yaya Goodvibes, Loraine Guyo and Melisa Makwasha, among others. They bought copies of Magacha’s album at good prices.

Before bidding of the album by DJ Ola 7 started, Magacha in a green suite rocked the stage performing songs from the new album.

Even though it is still early to judge, the title track I Am Favoured seemed to have received a positive response from the fans. He also took time to announce that he would premiere the video for the track Nzira which features Gemma Griffiths, today. —Newsday

Man Brutally Kills Wife As Son (4) Watches

A KNIFE-wielding man reportedly tracked his estranged wife who had fled their matrimonial home and stabbed her all over the body in broad daylight on Sunday on the streets of Rusape while their four-year-old son watched helplessly.

Police confirmed the death of Ms Tariro Mutumbami (22) of Mutumbami Village under Chief Marange at the hands of her husband, Taurai Nyanga (27).

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nobert Muzondo said Ms Mutumbami secretly left her matrimonial home at Claire Compound in Odzi last week.

“She went to Rusape to look for employment at Chitowa Farm. Last week on Saturday, Nyanga phoned Ms Mutumbami and asked her whereabouts. Ms Mutumbami then directed Nyanga to Chitowa Farm,” said Insp Muzondo.

He added: “On Sunday, Nyanga travelled to Rusape and found Ms Mutumbami seated with another man whom he suspected to be her boyfriend at the corner of Silverbow Road and Mbuya Nehanda Street.

“The suspected boyfriend fled from the scene. Nyanga then dragged Ms Mutumbami for about five metres. He tripped her to the ground and sat on her back. He stabbed her several times with an Okapi knife while their minor child watched. She died on the spot,” said Insp Muzondo.

After realising that he had committed murder, Nyanga sought to run away, but onlookers gave chase and effected a citizen’s arrest. The public disarmed him before handing him over to the police.

Ms Mutumbami’s body was conveyed to Rusape General Hospital for post-mortem. Nyanga has since appeared in court facing murder charges and was not asked to plead. He appeared before Rusape magistrate, Mr Obedience Matare who remanded him in custody to August 30.

Mr Matare advised him to apply for bail at the High Court. Prosecutor, Mr Justice Masanganise said Nyanga stabbed Ms Mutumbami several times on the head, twice on the neck, once on the left jaw, once on the right ear, once on the left arm pit and once on the forearm.

Wadyajena’s Seized Vehicle Fleet

A fleet of haulage trucks belonging to the Member of Parliament for Gokwe-Nembudziya, Justice Mayor Wadyajena, through his company Mayor Logistics, can now be seized by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) and held pending the outcome of a fraud trial of Wadyajena and four top Cotton Company of Zimbabwe managers or an associated civil action.
In addition to the 22 trucks listed in the court order permitting the seizure, the same order allows ZACC to hold two luxury cars, a Lamborghini and BMW X6, temporarily held by Beitbridge authorities on Friday while they were on their way to South Africa.

The five are accused of diverting Cottco money meant to buy bale ties to buying the trucks now allegedly being used by Wadyajena. But the trucks and other assets now being sought and seized are more likely to be forfeited to the State in a separate civil application under a law meant to reclaim assets acquired through unlawful activity.

While criminal charges have to be proved beyond reasonable doubt, civil proceedings are decided on the balance of probabilities and the difference has seen assets forfeited even when there is no successful criminal prosecution.

The assets facing seizure are 22 haulage trucks and the two luxury cars allegedly bought with funds diverted from Cottco. At the weekend, ZACC obtained a warrant of search and seizure of these assets belonging to Mayor Logistics from Harare magistrate Ms Barbara Mateko.

Wadyajena was arrested last week along with four Cottco top executives: Pious Manamike (54), Maxmore Njanji (47), Fortunate Maloi (34) and Chiedza Danha (39). The five were arrested on charges of fraud and money laundering involving US$5 million of Cottco money.

According to the warrant granted to ZACC, the managing director of Mayor Logistics (Pvt) Ltd and Wadyajena or any other person in authority or control of the vehicles are ordered to release them to Victor Masimba, an investigating officer from ZACC.

National Prosecuting Authority prosecutor Ms Audrey Chogumaira, in her ex parte application, told the magistrate that there is likelihood of dissipation of the trucks considering the fact that Wadyajena has now appeared in court and might abscond from Zimbabwe, despite his bail conditions that include $200 000 bail and the surrender of his title deeds and his passport.

She said the haulage trucks which allegedly constitute proceeds of crime are now used on transborder business hence they were likely to be shipped out of Zimbabwe to foreign countries especially South Africa where they will be difficult to repatriate to Zimbabwe.

“The criminal investigations underway revolve around fraud and laundering of the specified movable property hence the need for seizure of the same by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission pending further processes in terms of the Money Laundering and Proceeds of Crimes Act, and most specifically the civil confiscation to be sought within that period by the applicant,” she stated in her papers.

“The purpose of this property seizure order is to preserve the said property from dissipation or alienation pending investigations into allegations of fraud and money laundering.”

This order will remain in force until the criminal proceedings and civil confiscation proceedings by the National Prosecuting Authority against Wadyajena and his company are terminated unless varied or revoked by a court order.

Last week, Wadyajena and his accomplices were granted $200 000 bail each by a Harare regional magistrate Mr Stanford Mambaje who ordered them to surrender the title deeds to their personal properties as surety.

Wadyajena and the Cottco bosses are alleged to have converted money which was meant for the importation of bale ties and bought the trucks through Mayor Logistics, where Wadyajena is believed to be a director, and allegedly diverted a second order for ties to energy companies.

In his bail ruling, Mr Mambanje said the State, through ZACC investigating officer Mr Arthur Murambiza, failed to place before the court a compelling reason that warrants continued detention of Wadyajena and the Cottco bosses, who are all expected back in court on September 8.

In another case involving assets, the NPA has obtained unexplained wealth orders at the High Court against former Finance and Economic Development Ministry official Marcos Nyaruwanga and traditional healer Ester Mutesvu to explain how they have acquired their assets, which are suspected to have been bought through ill-gotten proceeds.

According to the order against Nyaruwanga, he is asked to give a sworn statement to the head of ZACC’s Asset Forfeiture Recovery Unit, explaining how he acquired his Hatfield property plus five top-of-the range Mercedes Benz vehicles, five Toyota vehicles, a Honda Accord, a BMW320i and a Nissan Murano.

In the order, Nyaruwanga is required to give details of the costs incurred in obtaining the listed assets and produce all the supporting documents and receipts showing proof of legitimate business and source of income for their acquisition.

In the case of Mutesvu, the NPA have sought an order barring her from disposing her assets comprising a house at Aspindale Park in Harare bought for US$58 000, a Toyota Hiace bought for US$10 200 and a Toyota Axio bought for US$4 600, plus all her household property until the criminal matter in which she is being prosecuted for money laundering has been finally disposed of.

According to the order, in the event that the criminal trial of Mutesvu is concluded, the terms of the order will remain in force until the application for confiscation of the listed property has been disposed of or until the terms of the order have been varied by a court order.

Mutesvu is also required to give a sworn statement setting out the commercial use and such income derived from the property or dealings with the property by her from the day of acquisition of such property to date. -Herald

Totally Innocent Soldier Jailed 6 Years

Former Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) captain and chaplain at Mbalabala Barracks, who was wrongly jailed for six years for theft of a vehicle belonging to businessman Osfael Mazibuko says his business crumbled when he was rotting in jail.
Solomon Ndlovu (52) was in January 2018 convicted of theft of a motor vehicle by Beitbridge regional magistrate Mark Dzira after a full trial.

He was sentenced to six years in jail, with two months suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. A further five months were suspended on condition he restituted Mazibuko US$2 500, leaving him with an effective 65 months to serve.

Ndlovu, through his lawyer Abel Ndlovu of Dube and Associates, filed an appeal at the Bulawayo High Court citing the State as respondent.

The lawyers submitted that Dzira erred and misdirected himself by attaching a criminal liability to the former army captain arguing that the agreement was a civil matter. The State did not oppose the application that both the conviction and sentence were improper.

Two High Court judges, Justices Maxwell Takuva and Thompson Mabhikwa, on September 16, 2019, set aside both conviction and sentence, and acquitted Ndlovu after serving one year and eight months at Khami Maximum Security Prison in Bulawayo.

Last week, Ndlovu said his prison tenure was a nightmare which resulted in multiple losses.

“If it was not for this false criminal case, I could have gone very far with life. But this case grounded and destroyed all my plans. Everyone thought I was out and done with, including my wife who even refused to take me back when I was released thinking that this matter will come back again.

“People looted my farm — Mjinge Conservancy in Mwenezi, Masvingo which Mazibuko had also snatched and I repossessed it through the courts. My farm house was vandalised and I lost cattle,” Ndlovu said.

He said despite the High Court application which was granted on farm possession, Mazibuko appealed to the Supreme Court, a development stalling his farming projects.- Newsday

South Africa Has Whites Only Town

South Africa has a town where black and coloured people are not allowed to live called Orania. According to several reports, only whites live in this town.

Said a BBC journalist who visited the town:

I spent a few days in Orania, a town established in 1991 where no black people live.

I was part of a BBC crew, including Zimbabwean journalist Stanley Kwenda, who were accredited to visit.

And during that time, I did not see any other black people in the town of 1,000 – an unusual experience in modern South Africa.

It is an Afrikaner-only town, where only Afrikaans is spoken, because of fears about “diluting culture”.

Orania was founded by one Boshoff Snr as a registered company during the last years of apartheid, with the idea of making it a safe haven for Afrikaners. Dutch, German and French settlers who arrived and colonised South Africa in the 1600s. Afrikaners dominated South Africa for many decades and introduced the apartheid system which was based on racial segregation

One of the Orania residents told the BBC:

“I see nothing wrong with apartheid!

Of course you get the petty apartheid: ‘You use this toilet I use that toilet’, I don’t think that was necessary but the real apartheid as Dr Verwoerd saw it, there was nothing wrong with it.

While the town’s administrators insist that it’s not about the colour of skin, no black people or coloureds can live there.

Prospective residents are screened by the town council using a strict criterion, and the key criterion is being an ethnic Afrikaner. Just being able to speak Afrikaans is not enough.

Orania prints its own money and runs its own banks, and has its own holidays. It even has and flies its own flag.

According to a report by WION, the residents of Orania have said their next goal is the creation of an Afrikanner republic- WION/ BBC

Illicit Mining Activities Trigger Human, Wildlife Conflict

CIASA STATEMENT ON ILLICIT MINING ACTIVITIES IN PROTECTED AREAS

The issue of focus for this communique is the recent explosion in illicit mining activities within protected areas which has led to the escalation in Human-Wildlife Conflict (HWC) in the Chipinge District of Manicaland, Zimbabwe. This is home to the Ndau Indigenous people who represent a small minority in the country. There has been an upsurge in Human Wildlife Conflict due to illegal diamond mining activities in and around wildlife conservancies, degrading and destroying the natural habitat for large mammals like elephants and driving out of the reserves, animals which serve as food to carnivores like lions. The degradation is a direct result of the unsafe mining methods used by the illegal miners. Cyclone Idai and the following El Nino induced cyclones in the district have been responsible for the destruction and sweeping away of the perimeter fences of the wildlife conservancies allowing seamless migration of wildlife from their conservancies to human settlements. Both large mammals and carnivores have preyed upon human settlements and affected household economic activity with women being the hardest hit. It is worth noting that Chipinge is surrounded by several game reserves including Chipinge Safari area, Devuli Ranch, Save Conservancy amongst other smaller and/or private game reserves.

Chief amongst the effects of the proliferation of illicit mining in conservancies is the disturbance of the natural habitat for large mammals and predatory animals. Secondly, unregulated human settlement has also attributed to the destruction of animal habitats within protected areas and thus making them vulnerable to the elements, hunger and starvation. This then pushes the animals out of the conservancies and into human settlement and farming areas destroying life and crops with a disproportionate inclination of victims being women.

As such, we call upon the relevant stakeholders to work with the local communities to create social fencing interventions. Without community participation in environmental protection activities, there is no community benefit and as such, adjacent communities ought to play a bigger role in monitoring illegal mining activities and reporting whilst equally raising early warning systems in case of wildlife straying towards human settlement.

In the same vein, the Environmental Management Agency, Parks and Wildlife, Forestry Commission and all key stakeholders in the environment sector be capacited by central government to effectively execute the their mandate in the protection and promotion of their target Protected areas for effective environmental management.

Antiretroviral Therapy Saves Millions

HIV/AIDS remains one of the world’s most significant public health challenges, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.

As a result of recent advances in access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV-positive people now live longer and healthier lives. In addition, it has been confirmed that ART prevents onward transmission of HIV.

An estimated 28.7 million people were receiving HIV treatment in 2021. Globally, 75% of the 38.4 million people living with HIV in 2021 were receiving ART.

Progress has also been made in preventing and eliminating mother-to-child transmission and keeping mothers alive. In 2021, 81% of all pregnant women living with HIV, or 1.1 million women, received antiretrovirals (ARVs).

WHO has released a set of normative guidelines and provides support to countries in formulating and implementing policies and programmes to improve and scale up HIV prevention, treatment, care and support services for all people in need.

This fact file provides current data on the disease, and ways to prevent and treat it.

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infects cells of the immune system
Infection results in the progressive deterioration of the immune system, breaking down the body’s ability to fend off some infections and other diseases. AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome) refers to the most advanced stages of HIV infection, defined by the occurrence of any of more than 20 opportunistic infections or related cancers.

Access to preventive interventions remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries.

But progress has been made in some areas such as prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV and keeping mothers alive. In 2021, 81% of all pregnant women living with HIV – 1.1 million women – received antiretrovirals worldwide. In 2015, Cuba was the first country declared by WHO as having eliminated mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis. By the end of 2021, 15 countries and territories were validated for eliminating mother-to-child HIV.

“Free Wiwa, Nyatsime Activists”

US$5 Fine For Littering

By A Correspondent- Masvingo City Council has resolved to introduce a US$5 littering fine as part of its efforts to arrest litterbugs in the city.

The Health, Housing and Environmental Services Committee recommended the Chief Health Officer to refer to the Finance and General Purposes Committee, the introduction of an anti-littering  fine.

“It was proposed and agreed that council should introduce a littering fine of USD$5 in the city to reduce rampant littering in the Central Business District. The idea was accepted in principle,” reads part of the committee minutes.

In another development, the city council turned down the offer by the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works to procure fire tenders on behalf of local authorities  opting for the procurement of refuse and tipper trucks.

According to the Finance and General Purposes Committee, the members said that the purchase of a fire tender was not a priority to the  city.

Consideration was given to the report of the Acting Finance Director on the letter from the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works advising that the Government will procure fire tenders on behalf of local authorities utilising the 2022 devolution fund allocations.

“The City of Masvingo would get two fire tenders at a cost of USD464 396 each. The 2022 devolution allocation was ZWL$253 107 300 and council was being advised to re-prioritise the devolution funds to accommodate the cost of the fire tenders.

“The committee raised concern that fire tenders were not a priority to the City of Masvingo. The city was in need of refuse trucks, tipper trucks, grader and ambulances.

The committee counter-proposed that the Government should consider procuring two refuse trucks, a tipper truck, grader and an ambulance for the City of Masvingo using the devolution funds in place of the fire tenders,” noted the report.

Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Association (MURRA).

Commenting on the two developments, Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Association (MURRA) spokesperson Mr Godfrey Mtimba applauded the move by the local authority to introduce fines but called on the city fathers to revise the amount saying the amount was too steep to residents who were struggling to make ends meets.

He said they should consider increasing the number of litter bins in the city as they were few.

Job Sikhala Letter From Chikurubi

Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison

Harare, Zimbabwe

03 August 2022

INTRODUCTION

I write to you all, your Excellencies, Heads of State and Heads of Government in my capacity as a citizen of the global village. I am writing to you from a Maximum Security Prison in Zimbabwe, called Chikiurubi. Please bear with me on the way how this letter will reach your office as I have authorised my international lawyers Amsterdam and Partners (LF) based in Washington DC and London to circulate, and any Zimbabwean who would have come across it, to forward it to you.

My name is Job Sikhala, a Zimbabwean lawyer and opposition Member of Parliament, aged 49 years and a senior official of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) political party.

On the 14 June 2022 I was arrested by the Government of Zimbabwe and I am currently detained at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, for the umpteenth time. I was arrested together with another opposition Member of Parliament Godfrey Sithole, accused of the crime of incitement to cause public violence. Furthermore, the Government re-arrested me on 15 July 2022from prison and pressed more charges against me, this time charging me with defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

BACKGROUND

On 24 May 2022 a woman by the name of Moreblessing Ali, was abducted around 2100 hours and was later found brutally murdered. Her body was in a state of decomposition and cut into several pieces. Moreblessing Ali was a strong opposition activist whose murder is strongly linked to the ruling party ZANU PF.

After he abduction and forced disappearance on 24 May 2022, the murdered woman’s family engaged me to be their family lawyer. My instructions were to demand from the authorities the truth about her whereabouts and to demand justice for her. The Government in an attempt to conceal the truth about the circumstances around the depressing abduction, went into a hysterical public campaign against myself, through statements issued by senior Government officials and its propaganda mouthpieces inciting and calling for my arrest.

The campaign won and on 14 June 2022 at around 2000 hours the Government dispatched a swarm of its paratroopers, secret security agents and the police totalling over 100 members. They raided my house in the high-density suburb of St Marys in Chitiungwiza and arrested me.

Since that day of arrest to the present day I have been kept in prison at Chikiurubi, a concentration-camp monster on the outskirts of Harare. The prison resembles Adolf Hitler’s Nazi concentration camp and Josef Stalin’s Siberia. The Government courts have consistently denied me bail and are determined to keep me in this concentration camp.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF MY PERSECUTION BY THE STATE

I started public leadership since my days as a student leader at the University of Zimbabwe in the late 1990s. I was elected as the Member of Parliament for the St Mary’s constituency in the year 2000 as a young graduate. I am currently the Member of Parliament for a constituency called Zengeza West. My troubles started soon after election into public office in the year 2000.

The late former President Robert Mugabe’s government arrested me more than 60 times until the time of his downfall. Despite the 60 arrests, I was acquitted of all the politically motivated charges against me. This was so because Robert Mugabe was not one to interfere with the criminal justice system, neither did he create funny courts to persecute opponents. The judiciary in the criminal justice system operated independently of the dictator of the Executive.

Furthermore, Mugabe had no command structure to dictate what judicial officers must do against his opponents. That is the reason why his most fierce nemesis, the late Morgan Tsvangirai was acquitted of the nefarious treason charge.

On all my troubles under Robert Mugabe’s reign, the State went overboard and tortured me in the 18 January 2003 together with my (then) lawyer Gabriel Shumba, my friend Charles Mutame and Taurai Magaya. The torture ignited international outrage. It became an important issue at the Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) summit held in Brisbane, Australia in 2003. It caused the swift exit of Zimbabwe from the Commonwealth.

After the downfall of former President Robert Mugabe from power in November 2017, the new ruler(s) intensified their persecution of my person. They arrested me on 26 June 2019 and accused me of treason. They alleged that I was plotting to overthrow the government using unconstitutional means. I was tried in the High Court in a city called Masvingo. I was acquitted of all the manufactured allegations.

The government did to surrender its propensity to persecute me. They arrested me again in August 2020 and the matter is still pending in the Courts up to the present accusing me of incitement to cause public violence over the public’s successful stay home of 31 July 2020.

There was no single incident ever witnessed in Zimbabwe. Unsatisfied they arrested me once more again with the prominent Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and a prominent female lawyer and my Party’s spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere accusing us of publishing falsehoods using our social media handles. For the umpteenth time, they have arrested me again in 2022 – twice – and have thrown me into this concentration camp Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison.

FACTS ABOUT THE PRESENT ARREST AND INCARCERATION

As alluded to above I am currently being incarcerated at the most horrible place called Chikiurubi Maximum Security Prison since 14 June 2022 up till now.

It is very clear from everything that the government and their agents have said and done, that they are determined that I should not be given bail. Their reasons are political and have nothing to do with the law. They want maximum persecution knowing that their allegations against me are frivolous and vexatious.

PRESENT STATE OF AFFAIRS IN ZIMBABWE

Since the overthrow of the late President Robert Mugabe in 2017, Zimbabwe has turned into a nightmare for opposition political persons. More than 20 people have been arrested and charged with treason. This is three times more than all the persons charged with this offence during the 37-year period of Mugabe’s rule. At present more than 100 opposition members are facing various charges in the government’s courts of law.

What makes it even more bizarre is that senior opposition political leaders, prominent journalists, civic society leaders are being regarded as critics of the government and social activists are being dragged to a specialised court called the Corruption Court. The public’s anticipation was that it would deal with corruption cases only to find out that it has been turned into a persecution court for the opponents of the government. The cases for all politically related charges are given Ant-Corruption reference case numbers. This is unprecedented in civilised societies that uphold the rule of law, democracy and constitutionalism.

My current two manufactured charges by the government are before this court, a development that has eroded public confidence in the criminal justice system of Zimbabwe. The rule of law has totally broken down here in Zimbabwe.

WHAT DO I EXPECT OF YOU

The world cannot remain silent when the people of Zimbabwe are under siege. There is total breakdown of the rule of law in Zimbabwe such that people are being thrown into prison without fair trial. The right to a fair trial is a universal concept of law and a pillar of international law. The people of Zimbabwe are denied the right to a fair trial. We don’t have fair trials here, we only have political persecution.

Now is the time for the world to speak against the excesses of the Zimbabwe government against its citizens.

Hon. Job Sikhala

ZEC Slaps Madhuku, Mwonzora USD20,000 Bill Each

“…Excessive, undemocratic and unconstitutional. ZEC fails to appreciate that a ” free and fair” election starts from that being a candidate must not be unaffordable to an ordinary politician. The amounts MUST be substantially reduced. US$500K for a party to field ALL candidates?” – Lovemore Madhuku.

“ZANU Pf is not under any pressure from citizens that’s why it has breathing room to come up with stupid rules for 2023.” – Jacob Ngarivhume

https://twitter.com/NgarivhumeJacob/status/1561033281188925442?t=y5VN92Re0ELVm50focfwKw&s=19

@ZECzim is an army project. We have done zero to correct this.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) got an immediate response yesterday after announcing steep candidate nomination fees for next year’s elections as disgruntled citizens said they would mount a court challenge.
In a statutory instrument 144 of 2022, which amended S1 153 of 2014 issued on Friday, ZEC said the cost of fielding a presidential candidate was now US$20 000 up from US$1 000, US$1 000 from US$50 and $200 for senators and councillors from US$100.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights lawyer Obey Shava told The Standard that they were representing citizens, who were preparing to file a court challenge against the new fees.

“I confirm that there are a few people whose political rights have been infringed by the SI,” Shava said.

“The fees are too prohibitive and deny them their rights to exercise the right to vote, participate and stand for elections.”

Only Zanu PF and the Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T get funding from the government, which means that most political parties will struggle to raise the money to field candidates.

Under the country’s laws, political parties are not supposed to receive foreign funding to foot the cost of participation in election processes.

This means they have to meet their own costs, but many opposition parties are already struggling to carry out various activities, including elective congresses because of financial challenges.

With the new fees, they expressed fears that they may fail to participate in next year’s elections.

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) chief elections officer Ian Makone said the new fees were “unbelievable.”

“We oppose attempts to privatise a public service, which limits opportunities for people’s choices and participation,” Makone said.

Mwonzora’s spokesperson Lloyd Damba said the fees were an assault on democracy.

“If you remember back then we had Simba Makoni who had to announce his candidature after Zanu PF frustrated all efforts to renew itself from within,” Damba said.

“If these fees were the way they have been gazetted, Makoni would not be in history books as a presidential contender.”

Zapu spokesperson Mso Ndlovu described the fees increase as an attempt to rig elections.

“Democracy now comes at a huge premium,” Ndlovu said.

“They want to ensure that those that cannot afford do not participate forgetting that those who represent the ordinary people have no means.”

Former speaker of Parliament Lovemore Moyo, who is the leader of the United Movement for Devolution, said elections were at the core of democratic processes and institutions.

“It is clear that there’s an element of collusion with (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa’s regime to restrict electoral contestation in order to facilitate election rigging,” Moyo said.

“It is ludicrous to expect political parties to fork out over US$500 000 for them to fully participate in the electoral processes.”

Bulawayo-based political commentator Effie Ncube said the country risked sliding back into a one-party state.

“With these fees ZEC is killing the multiparty democratic system contemplated in the constitution,” Ncube said.

“Also, when participating in elections requires so much money, such elections cannot be deemed free and fair because access is one of the benchmarks of a free and fair election.”

Methuseli Moyo, a political commentator, accused ZEC of commercialising politics.

“We are going to end up with a situation where maybe we have two or three parties contesting, and that limits the choice of the voters,” he said.

“We need local parties to push their local issues, and with the new fees, local parties have been destroyed.”

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition spokesperson Obert Masaraure said there was need for the masses to unite against ZEC to force it to renew the fees downwards.

“The ruling elites who have been looting state resources should not be allowed to reduce elections into an elite affair,” Masaraure said.

“The working class and the peasants, who are the worst affected should unite and fight back, demanding an inclusive electoral process.”

ZEC spokesperson Jasper Mangwana yesterday demanded written questions when asked for a comment.

Mnangagwa will be seeking a second full term in office in next year’s polls and he is likely to face CCC leader Nelson Chamisa whom he narrowly defeated in the disputed 2018 elections. -Standard

ZEC Refuses To Release Voters’ Roll

Tinashe Sambiri| The Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) has accused ZEC of playing hide and seek in terms of availing the voters’ roll.

CCC wants ZEC to release the compact voters’ roll before the delimitation exercise.

See CCC Namibia statement:

CCC Namibia demands the prompt release of the compact voters’ roll ahead of the delimitation exercise!

19 August 2022

Citizens in Namibia who subscribe to the vibrant yellow caravan engineered by the diligent and outspoken President Advocate Nelson Chamisa urge change champions to never get over-exhilarated about participating in an election without certain litmus tests being met by the remote-controlled ZEC.

It is quite perturbing that ZEC is refusing to discharge the much-needed voters’ roll which is a public document that must be accessed by the citizens ahead of the delimitation exercise. In line with Section 21 of the Electoral Act, a copy of the voters roll should be made obtainable to those who adjure it upon payment of the prescribed amount. Citizens resident in Namibia are cognizant of the fact that delimitation is set to commence soon but the captured ZEC is still reluctant to deliver the national consolidated voters roll to the grieved citizenry, political parties, and civic society organisations.

Bearing in mind that the delimitation exercise, which involves creating novel electoral frontiers, is anticipated to commence in October and end in December 2022, ZEC must respect the rule of law and constitutionalism. We expect the electoral commission to instantly release the full voters roll on a timely basis to demonstrate their allegiance to the Electoral Act and the supreme law of the motherland. ZEC’s dismal failure to provide the voters roll is a serious violation of the law and this must be resisted with equal measure. The lack of integrity evidenced during recent by-elections compels Namibia district to advocate for citizens to disband the commission for its partisan conduct.

Moreover, change champions in Namibia prioritize the strengthening of ZEC’s independence so that it is free from government oversight in the approval of its regulations, for which the amendment of the Electoral Act is fundamental. We shall soldier on recommending the timely holding of more meetings of the Multi-Party Liason Committees(MPLC) throughout the entire electoral process, as an effective conflict resolution arsenal for political parties. This will surely go a long way in creating a sound forum for reporting non-compliance with the code of conduct for free, fair, and unfettered elections in the motherland.

Furthermore, it does not require any legislative transformation as the Electoral Act foresees, in Section 160B, the formation of the Multi-Party Liason Committees at the local, constituency, and national level at any date on or after the commencing of the period of six months before the end of the five-year term of parliament. We clamour for more effective information-dissemination by the compromised ZEC to disappointed election stakeholders on all steps of election preparations with adequate transparency, making all information of public interest easily accessible forthright.

In a nutshell, citizens in Namibia demand accountability and openness from ZEC considering the discrepancies unearthed during the recent by-elections where most voters could not vote because they were deliberately displaced to give ZANU-PF an upper hand.

Without further ado, Namibia district calls for the immediate and unconditional release of the Nyatsime 16 who include Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole. Hon Sikhala and others were illegally arrested sometime in June to date and they have been denied bail several times. It is satanic to grant bail to the corrupt and extravagant ZANU-PF member of parliament Mayor Wadyajena and cronies who stole 5 million US$ but deny political prisoners arbitrarily arrested for demanding justice.

VP Chiwenga: I’ll Stop Orphans From Accessing Health Services

Health sector stakeholders and legislators say the Medical Services Amendment Bill sponsored by Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga’s Health ministry will deny orphans access to health care services if it is passed into law in its current form.

Constantino Chiwenga

Government has come up with the Medical Services Amendment Bill ostensibly to align the law to the constitution, but activists say it is a recipe for disaster.

The Bill says children under the age of 18 cannot access health services without their parents or guardians.

“Criteria for the age of consent by children should be based on the best interests of the child principle,” Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights executive director Calvin Fambirai said.

“It was also proposed that if parents or guardians were not in a position to grant such consent, there must be a provision in the law to bring in specialists (doctors, social workers, psychologists etc).”

Bulawayo proportional representation MP Jasmine Toffa raised similar concerns.

“In most cases, young children are from different environments. Some parents are working outside the country,” Toffa said.

“Some children may indulge in sexual activities and you find that the child is sick and they have to go through their mother or guardian in order for them to access health services.

“You know what our culture is like, children can’t even face their parents to tell them that they have an STI [sexually transmitted infection.

“So if children can access health services, this can go a long way in helping them and improving health services.”

Zimbabwe has an estimated 1,7 million orphans.

Advocacy Core Team co-ordinator Diana Mailosi said professionals at healthcare institutions should provide services to children without their guardians.

Fambirai implored government to shoulder the burden of providing healthcare services to citizens, instead of burdening private players with the task.

In the new Bill, government wants private players to treat emergency cases through amendment of section 76(3) of the constitution.

“Instead, the Bill should create an advisory panel to work on the general principles rather than drawing the minister to set fees,” Fambirai said.

“Involving the minister in such operational issues will affect the turnaround time given the hyper-inflationary environment.

“The reimbursement model where government reimburses for services rendered is not working effectively e.g, local authorities are owed huge sums of money by government.”

Legal think-tank, Veritas said the Bill lacked clarity in certain provisions.

“The Bill also defines the terms ‘basic healthcare’ and ‘reproductive healthcare’, which are not used anywhere in the Bill or the Act,” it said.-Standard

Why Zimbabwe Will Never Be Divided Mthwakazi Seeking To Partition The Country

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | A group calling itself Mthwakazi Republic are essentially a secessionist outfit making claim to what it calls a Mthwakazi State. The purported state comprises the two provinces of Matebeleland, including Bulawayo and the Middlands.
Mthwakazi thrives on emotionalism.

Dr Masimba Mavaza

From the outset, there has been no such state in history. It is true that our nation comprises of diverse ethinic groups which have broadly lived in their respective provinces. In pre- colonial times these various ethnic groups co-existed in that fashion.

The concept of re-winding history to feudal times is simply an illogical one. Throughout the world ( not only in Africa) communities have evolved as families, to small communities, rising to ethnic groupings and altimately to nations. Take the example of England ( excluding Wells, Ireland and Scotland). The English are not a monolithic grouping. Their language was shaped by the coming together of the dialects of the Anglos,Saxons and Jutes. The diversity of English people is marked by the perculiar regional and even sub-regional accents. The same can be said of the Shona language with its diversity.

Therefore, if a Mthwakazi Sessesion were granted, then this would trigger a dismemberment of the whole of Zimbabwe into at least five ‘republics’. It would be argued that the so-called Mthwakazi Republic would eventually disintegrate further into Kalanga Republic in the west, Suthu/ Venda Republic in the south, Tonga/Nambia repuplic in the north. The same disintegration process would be taking place in other regions until what is one nation now is a cluster of small tribal communities. Nothing of that sort is happening in the rest of the world and thankfully it will not happen in Zimbabwe, either.

There is no scientific or plausible reason or justification for entertaining a fanatic sessesionist group calling for what would lead to the wanton fragmentation our country. This group feeds on dividing people and sowing seeds of hate, agitation and ethnic resentment.

It is correct that the group ruthlessly exploit, to some extent genuine grievences. It magnifies those. The Second Republic has acknowledged historic grievences in Matebeleland and Middlands. It has not sought to deny or brush them aside. This is the reason why initiated a Peace & Healing Commission led by Justice Selo Nare.

The Peace and Reconciliation Commission is not just a forum for coming together. It is about genuine discussions with a view to finding justice and ultimate healing. Because of the scale of the work, this cannnot be done overnight, nor can it be easy and painless. Everyone must engage the Commission.

Our nation will not go far by an act continuously being on one another’s throats. We have to learn from our past errors and move on to build a stronger nation. Rwanda is an example of what can be achieved if a people choose to look foward and build for the future.

Our children deserve better than us shoving down their throats seeds of hate and division. They deserve a better nation living under one proud flag.

Those clamouring for sessessionism make no effort to outline what they will do with that. The proper approach is to put forward a program of socio- economic action to uplift the wellbeing of our nation. That is a noble thing, not a resort to the low politics of insult and tribal appeals.

It is worth noting that the CCC is silent on the sessessionist ideas. When the very existence of our state in its form , substance and shape is challenged, one would expect that those purporting to be a government in waiting will take a clear and unequivocal stance that they make known to the nation. Not so with CCC.

The eloquent silence of CCC is alarming. Contrast this with Britain’s Labour Party. They oppose the Conservative-led government in Britain. When it comes to the Scottish Independence calls, the Labour Party came out and it comes out to outline its stance. The Scottish Independence Referendum was in 2014 . In the 2015 General Election ( at the aftermath of the Scottish referendum) the Labour Party lost
40 of the 42 seats it was defending. To put the scale of the Labour Party’s electoral collapse into context, there is a total of 59 seats in the Scottish Parliament devolved Parliament, Holyrood. Therefore Labour held the overwhelming of those seats.

Labour’s principled stance and openess cost them not just seets in Holyrood but also power in Westminster. CCC need to take a leaf out of the British Labour Party. Trying to ascend to power at the back of vicious divisiveness by turning a deaf ear to an issue that potentially threaten the very survival of the nation as we know it is a higly dangerous game. It extinguish any lingering that CCC are or could ever be a serious party. CCC’s history is laced with irresponsibility, extreme childish behaviour at best.

We must maintain the unitary nature and integrity of our state. Does that mean we foolishily ignore the richness and diversity of our people Each region is different. Indeed ech town is different. In Matebelaland South Plumtree is distinct from Gwanda.

Masvingo is distinct from Mashava in Masvingo region.

This is precisely why in the National Development Stategy 1 (2021-2025) (NDS1) the government of Zimbabwe specifically recognises and embraces the concept of devolution while we maintain “the unitary architecture of the state”. This means that the NDS1 recognises that each region has different needs at different times.

Mthwakazi Republic, like all other groupings ( including naive CCC) and citizens, must support devolution plans. It works in neigbouring South Africa and the government of Zimbabwe wants to make it work in our country.

The politics of divide and rule was defeated in the Chimurenga war. It is mischief for anyone to seek to divide the country on language basis. It is a shame on Mthwakazi and its supporters. Zimbabwe must not be divided by ignorant people.
It is time for Zimbabwe to shun tribalism and build the country. Divided we fall united we stand.

Zanu PF Activist Humiliates Mohadi

SHURUGWI – A Shurugwi youth who squared off with Zanu PF vice president Kembo Mohadi at a public meeting at Chachacha Grounds in Shurugwi South on Tuesday chewed more than he could swallow as he was pulled away from the crowd and severely assaulted by security agents and Zanu PF activists.

Cuthbert Ngwenya who said that he is a Zanu Pf district chairman at Hwinya Village confirmed the incident to The Mirror and said he could not walk after the assault. He bemoaned the fact that he was beaten for merely expressing his views at a meeting.

“VP Mohadi asked for comments from the floor at the end of his speech and I raised my hand and expressed my honest opinion on the issue, and I am shocked that I was severely beaten for that.

“I was taken to Donga Police station where I was assaulted on my backside with switches and truncheons. My buttocks are swollen. I can hardly walk. The people who assaulted me included District Coordinating Committee (DCC) members, Police officers and Mohadi’s security details.

“I reported the case at Tongogara Police station on Thursday, and a docket was opened. The case is under investigation,” said Ngwenya.

The Mirror has a copy of the Police report in its hands.

Several people who were at the meeting confirmed the incident but declined to comment saying that the matter is sensitive and people can disappear.

Midlands Province Police spokesperson Emmanuel Mahoko said he is not aware of the issue.

The incident happened at a meeting called by Mohadi to mobilise chiefs, village heads and resettlement area chairpersons to strike a working relationship between them and the party’s DCC. After his speech, Mohadi then asked the meeting if there was anyone who could not work with the DCC.

Ngwenya stood up and said yes. He declared to Mohadi that people were not willing and were not going to work with the DCC.

Mohadi called Ngwenya to the front to give reasons for his answer but the latter was grabbed and whisked away from the meeting as he was just about to receive the mic. He was severely assaulted by security agents and DCC members, he told The Mirror.

“I have been sent by President Mnangagwa to ask chiefs and other traditional leaders to work with the DCC because the people belong to you. Is there anyone with a problem working with the DCC in preparation for the elections?” asked Mohadi.

Ngwenya shot up and answered.

“Yes, we have problems with the DCC. We are not going to work with that structure,” said Ngwenya.

There was a momentary silence before Mohadi called Ngwenya to the front to explain why he could not work with the DCCs. He never came back to the meeting.- The Mirror

As Harare Magistrate gave corrupt Zanu PF mp Wadyajena bail

19 August 2022

Wezhira Munya

Luton Town To Make Decision On Muskwe Future

Luton Town will decide on sending Admiral Muskwe on loan before the end of the transfer window.

Muskwe hasn’t earned any significant amount of time on the pitch this term, featuring for a mere 134 minutes across two appearances.

The 23-year-old striker’s only start so far came in the 3-2 Carabao Cup first round defeat to Newport County last week.

He was not included in the matchday squads for the first three league games of the season.

Luton coach Nathan Jones told The Lutonian newspaper: “You can keep everyone around if they all get minutes and they all stay fit and potent then you’d be brilliant, but we have to understand that not everyone can play and invariably people will start to lose a little bit of that zest and that zip and that’s why they go out on loan.

“It’s just about game time for them (Muskwe and Carlos Mendes Gomes), we like them, they’re good players, it’s just about getting game time.”

Jones added: “They would have done (gone on loan) regardless of the cup, there’s one or two that need the exposure, need the game time for their own development and their own sanity really, so we’ve always known that and we were going to play them in the Newport game as we had eight, maybe nine games in a month.

“We knew it was going to be tough, and we’ll need the squad, so when we have a number of players that are potentially available (on loan) just to keep their development moving forward.

“We want to make sure we get the right club for them and get the right people coming in for them, and once they do that, provided we can do a deal, they’ll get the game time they need.”

Muskwe arrived at Luton ahead of the 2021/22 season after leaving Leicester City U23s.

The Warriors international made 23 appearances across all competitions in his injury-ravaged debut campaign for the Championship side.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Casemiro Leaves Real Madrid

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Casemiro’s decision to leave the club.

The midfielder wants to join Manchester United, and the EPL side’s representatives have been holding discussions with Madrid chiefs in the Spanish capital.

Ancelotti confirmed Casemiro’s impending departure in his Friday press conference:

“Casemiro wants to try a new challenge, and we understand that. After what he’s done for this club, we should respect his decision.”

The coach added: “Casemiro is leaving, but we have a lot of resources to replace him. There is no turning back Casemiro has decided to try a new challenge. We want to wish him the very best. I realized Casemiro is leaving yesterday, but our plans don’t change – we’ll compete for everything with or without Casemiro.

“I think Casemiro has been a key player for us. He was important to Kroos and Modric – the combination was key to success. Casemiro’s teammates understand his decision. They respect it – it was his will to try a new challenge, and we have to accept it.”

The Brazilian, who has won 18 trophies at Real Madrid, including three league titles and five Champions League crowns, is set to fly out to Manchester for a medical and complete the transfer as soon as possible.

United will reportedly pay a €60m fixed fee plus €10m in add-ons.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Sikhala, Sithole In D Class Section

Tinashe Sambiri|The Zanu PF regime has confined CCC officials Hon Job Sikhala and Hon Godfrey Karakadzai Sithole to the ‘D’ Class Section at Chikurubi Maximum Prison.

The ‘D’ class section is for dangerous criminals and lawyers argue the two do not deserve to be in the category.

According to Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Hon Sikhala and Hon Sithole are being treated in a cruel and denigrating manner.

See ZHLR statement:

We have protested to ZPCS against the inhuman, cruel & degrading treatment of Hon. Job Sikhala & Hon. Godfrey Sithole who are constantly shackled in leg irons in prison & are sustaining bruises.

Some visitors are also being turned away when they bring food for Hon. Sikhala.

Our lawyers Rose Hanzi & Idirashe registered concern that Hon. Sikhala & Hon. Sithole are being detained in the “D” class section which is the detention section for dangerous & convicted criminals & yet the 2 legislators have not been convicted of any crime.

We want ZPCS to take corrective measures & detain the 2 in conditions that do not amount to inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.

Several human rights defenders have been shackled & detained at the D Class section. D Class section is supposed to house Dangerous inmates (convicted of crimes) those facing serious charges like murder.

Detaining HRDs or political leaders at this section is tantamount to persecution.

Key Facts About HIV/ AIDS

Woman, Two Minors Booted Out

By A Correspondent- A city woman claims her husband chased her away from their matrimonial home, together with her two children, at night.

Nyasha Chimanga revealed this at the Harare Civil Court, where she applied for a protection order, against Talent Kafira.

Nyasha told the court Talent chased her away from their house, while they were enjoying their supper.

She alleged her husband was in the habit of assaulting her, in front of their two minor children.

“I can’t keep on tolerating this kind of behaviour anymore.

“Currently, I am staying at my mother’s house because he chased me away at night, together with our children, and locked the gate.

“The worst part is that he did not even give us time to finish the food.

“He threw our food outside and forced us to leave the house at night,” claimed Nyasha.

In response, Talent told the court it was a mistake, since he was emotional, about his wife’s behaviour.

He claimed they were having marital issues and he wanted to engage their families. I am a human being and I make mistakes. I over reacted that night, that’s all l can say,” he said.

In her ruling, magistrate Sharon Mashavire granted the protection order in Nyasha’s favour.

By A Correspondent- Eight Gweru-based police officers have been arrested for allegedly stealing US$1 000 from a suspect before assaulting him with batons, resulting in him sustaining a fracture on the right leg and a damaged right ear.

Vunganai Chivore (46), Knowledge Musariri (32), Lenias Mukondiwa (35), Edmund Masokwedza (26), Wellington Mada (34), Simplicio Mutema (35), Fendon Mapengo (43) and Elias Chengeta (33)–whose ranks were not mentioned– appeared before Gweru Magistrate Mr Blessing Tsingano. Each of them faced a count of assault and theft.

They pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded to July 26 out of custody on free bail.

A medical doctor who treated the complainant, Mr Darlington Jambo, is expected to testify on the next remand date.

The court heard when Mr Jambo wanted to report the police officers for assault and theft, no police officers in Gweru wanted to take up the matter.

It was only after Mr Jambo approached the police headquarters that the officer- in -charge of Senga Police Station was ordered to take the report leading to the officers’ arrest.

The accused officers reside in police quarters at Senga Police Station in Senga and Mtapa police station in Mtapa suburb.

Mr Jambo and the police officers, the court heard, are not related.

On February 18 last year around 8PM, the court heard, the ZRP Gweru District Reaction Group comprising the accused was deployed to Mtapa policing area where they were doing a motorised patrol using a police vehicle that was being driven by Constable Mafirowanda.

At around 9PM during their tour of duty and while patrolling along Matobo Road, the accused persons saw a Toyota Fun cargo vehicle which was approaching them from the opposite direction swerving from one side to the other.

The court heard that Const Mafirowanda allegedly flashed his lights signaling Mr Jambo to stop.

Mr Jambo, the court heard, allegedly reduced speed and later fled.

After the complainant fled, the police vehicle made a U-turn and chased him.

The court heard that Chivore, Musariri, Mukondiwa, Masokwedza, Mada, Mutema, Mapengo and Chengeta caught up with the complainant after about 200 metres when his vehicle got stuck in a muddy ditch and his two tyres were punctured.

When the police officers arrived at the scene, they allegedly handcuffed Mr Jambo, assaulted him with batons while slapping him as two female officers watched.

The court heard Mr Jambo was put in a police car before the driver drove towards Mtapa police station.

As they drove to the police station, the court heard that Mr Jambo told the police officers that he had left US$ 1 000 and his cell phone in the car which was not locked. Const Mafirowanda, the court heard, made a U-turn and went back to Mr Jambo’s car.

The court heard that he searched for his cash and cell phone and did not find them.

The police officers allegedly continued to assault Mr Jambo using baton sticks and open hands resulting in him sustaining a fracture on the right leg and a damaged right ear.

Mr Jambo, the court heard, was allegedly taken to Mtapa Police station where he was placed in open cells. He later tried to make a complaint against the police but without any success.

Mr Jambo allegedly approached the police superiors at the headquarters in Harare before officer in charge Senga was assigned to take the matter leading to the arrest of Chivore, Musariri, Mukondiwa, Masokwedza, Mada, Mutema, Mapengo and Chengeta.

Woman Claims Maintenance For Child Sired After 1 Night Stand

By A Correspondent- A Harare woman dragged her former lover to court claiming $50 000 as maintenance for a child he allegedly sired, after a one night stand, 15 years ago.

The matter came to light when Mercy Muchara approached the Harare Civil Court, accusing Wonder Chizeve of neglecting his child.

However, Wonder argued he only became aware of the child’s existence recently, accusing Muchara of victimising him, after the death of her husband.

He sensationally claimed the child was not his.

“The child is not mine, she never told me about the child during the past 15 years. We were never in a relationship, we only met in a bar and we had a one-night stand,” said Chizeve. He told the court that a child could not have been conceived since they used protection.

We used protection although she later told me that the condom had burst the following morning.

“After some time she got married and we never saw each other until recently when she came back claiming I was her child’s father.

“The child carries another man’s last name and I am told she lost the man in question to Covid-19, hence she is trying to pin me to a child I am not responsible for,” said Chizeve.

In response, Mercy told the court that it was true that it was a one-night stand but she was sure Chizeve was the father of the child.

“Yes, I didn’t say any word for the past 15 years because I wanted to protect my marriage but, since my husband died, I decided to tell the truth so that Chizeve can maintain his child.”

After hearing both parties, magistrate Judith Taruvinga dismissed the case for lack of merit.

Madhuku Attacks ZEC, Exposes Rigging Attempts

By- National Constitutional Assembly President Professor Lovemore Madhuku has complained about exorbitant fees charged by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for parties to register candidates.

ZEC announced that political parties should pay US$500 000.00 for it to register all their MPs.

Madhuku complained on Twitter:

Excessive, undemocratic and unconstitutional. ZEC fails to appreciate that a ” free and fair” election starts from that being a candidate must not be unaffordable to an ordinary politician. The amounts MUST be substantially reduced. US$500K for a party to field ALL candidates?

Zanu PF Chief Whip Plots Coup Against Mnangagwa

By- Zanu PF chief whip, Pupurai Togarepi has been accused of seeking support from opposition MPs to stage a coup against President Emerson Mnangagwa.

Norton MP Temba Mliswa revealed this to ZimEye Friday.

According to Mliswa, Togarepi has chaired a caucus meeting comprising opposition members where they discussed government business.

Mliswa said this had never happened and suspected Togarepi was plotting a coup.

ZEC In Fresh Rigging Attempts

By- The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) has refused to release a consolidated voters roll ahead of the delimitation exercise, a social justice movement, Team Pachedu has claimed.

In line with section 21 of the Electoral Act, a copy of the voters roll should be made available to those who request it upon payment of the prescribed fee.
“With delimitation set to start soon, Zec is still unwilling to avail the national consolidated voters roll to anyone who wants it,” Team Pachedu claimed yesterday.
“The Electoral Act is clear on availing the roll to any individual who pays the prescribed fee. It is not all about inspection. Zec must answer.”
The delimitation exercise, which involves creating new electoral boundaries, is expected to start in October and end in December 2022.
The last exercise was based on the Registrar-General’s voters roll.
The upcoming exercise will be conducted using census data.
Team Pachedu added: “The failure to release the full voters roll on a timely basis is a clear violation of the law. We should never get excited about going into an election without certain benchmarks being met.”
NewsDay failed to get a comment from Zec spokesperson Jasper Mangwana and chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana.
Both kept promising to respond to NewsDay questions, but failed to do so by the time of going to print last night.
Opposition and independent election watchdogs said Zec’s refusal to release the consolidated voters roll further dented the credibility of the document after a number of discrepancies were unearthed by data experts in the past few months.
“The failure to publicly avail the voters roll timeously will further diminish public confidence in electoral processes. This will inevitably frustrate the citizens prospects of validating the credibility and accuracy of the delimitation outcome,” Citizens Coalition for Change interim deputy elections secretary Ellen Shiriyedenga said.
Election Resource Centre programmes manager Solomon Bobosibunu said: “It’s not only legal, but morally right. The voters roll is part of the key electoral material that must be availed transparently. That helps with accountability.”
Zimbabwe Election Support Network chairperson Andrew Makoni said: “It’s critical. If there are any anomalies, they can be attended to. So when a party or an individual requests a voters roll they are in terms of the law entitled to have it.
“The public portal can be secured by Zec itself to ensure that no one can tamper with it. It allows people to view the data they want.”
Zimbabwe Election Advocacy Trust executive director Igneous Sadziwa said Zec should be taken to task for refusing to release the voters roll.
“This is a serious breach of the Constitution and, therefore, stern action must be meted against the commission for failing to fulfil its constitutional obligations. Going into an election without important documentation like the voters roll is catastrophic for political parties and the electorate,” Sadziwa said.
“It’s a public document. If the tiff persists, we have no option but to disband the commission for gross misconduct.”
Meanwhile, election watchdogs which observed Kenyan polls have challenged Zec to draw lessons on the diaspora vote, use of technology, voters roll auditing and assisted voter system.
“Zimbabwe needs to implement legislation that allows for Zimbabweans above 18 to vote in their resident countries. Botswana, South Africa and Kenya demonstrated possibilities,” Bobosibunu said.
Makoni lauded Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission for embracing technology and engaging an independent auditor KPMG to audit the voters roll to promote transparency.
“We saw technology at play. Voting was largely through the Kenya Integrated Election Management System consisting of biometric voter registration, electronic voter identification system and the electronic transmission of results,” he said.
Mangwana earlier this week said it was the duty of Parliament to make laws on electoral reforms such as the need for the diaspora vote.
“Parliamentarians must be able to make these laws (in time) so that when we run elections we are able to check if some provisions can work or not. In Zimbabwe we don’t have that (voters’ roll auditing). Our voter inspection exercise is far more transparent than the third party audit,” he said.NewsDay.

Wadyajena Hides Loot In SA

By-Border authorities Friday intercepted two state-of-the-art vehicles belonging to Zanu PF Gokwe-Nembudziya MP Justice Mayor Wadyajena en route to South Africa.

The two were intercepted at the Beitbridge Border post.

The underfire Gokwe-Nembudziya constituency lawmaker was granted bail Thursday in another case of fraud and money laundering involving more than US$5 million.

Wadyajena is jointly charged with suspended Cottco Chief Executive Officer Pious Manamike, suspended Cottco marketing manager Maxmore Njanji and Fortunate Molai, also of Cottco, are jointly charged with Pierpont Moncroix Zimbabwe (Pvt) Limited and Mayor Logistics (Pvt) Limited.

The two state-of-the-art vehicles were intercepted at the Beitbridge Border post.

Wadyajena and the Cottco bosses are alleged to have converted money meant for the importation of bale ties and bought 25 trucks through Mayor Logistics, where Wadyajena is believed to be a director and allegedly diverted a second order for ties to energy companies.

Computer Club Saves Glen View Kids From Idleness

The Dreylee Computer Club has recently started operating in Glen View, Zimbabwe, and is open to both adults and children. According to the owners, this is primarily a gathering point for young people who may choose the wrong way to pastime, for example, by registering at an online casino or a bookmaker’s office. Especially since many sites like TwinSpinCa publish no deposit bonuses and other online promotions to entice customers to casinos.

Because of the deep crisis in the country for many years, young people cannot go to sports centers to play soccer, tennis, basketball, and other sports. Some people make their own gyms, but not everyone has this opportunity.

As a result, many starts taking alcohol or drugs, eventually not surviving adulthood.

This is what prompted local enthusiasts to create a computer club where, for a small fee, visitors can spend time playing Fifa, Call of Duty, Minecraft, and other popular games.

Tracy Casingisi’s story is quite revealing. The girl is an intern at Highspeed Motors and has a parallel passion for video games. Dreylee became a real salvation for her because she did not know where to spend her free time for a long time. Here you can meet your friends, discuss the latest news and play online games.

It is noteworthy that what this girl likes most of all is to play Fifa against guys, and especially to beat them. She achieves it thanks to her ability to spot a player’s weakness: according to Tracey, almost all the guys don’t use feints and, in general, play with just a few buttons.

Tawanyasha Gondo is also fond of soccer, but because of his age (he is 16), he has not decided on his future profession yet. The boy is studying at the Maltese Academy, after which he plans to become a soccer player, though the selection process there is quite tough.

Gondo also, from time to time, visits the computer club to relax and spend time with his friends.

“I’m a beginner soccer player, so playing Fifa is even good for me – I’m learning the behavior of players on the field, different tactics, and also learning the rules,” says Tawanñasha.

According to the young man, many of the guys who spend time at Dreylee prefer soccer simulation games because they allow for cooperative play and the short match times make it possible to swap with each other and have tournaments.

Overall, the story of this computer club perfectly describes a situation in which, even when the state is powerless, local initiatives can greatly improve the lives of young people in a particular region.

Wadyajena’s Posh Cars Impounded

State Media – Two luxury vehicles belonging to Gokwe-Nembudziya legislator Justice Mayor Wadyajena, now facing fraud charges with three Cottco bosses involving US$5 million, were seized and impounded by border authorities at Beitbridge to prevent them being shipped to South Africa.
Security sources said the red 2020 BMW X6 and 2019 Lamborghini, both high-performance sport utility vehicles, were moved from Harare to Beitbridge in a car carrier on Thursday evening.

The impounded cars

According to vehicle clearance documents, the two vehicles were cleared at CID vehicles theft squad in Harare on Wednesday, a routine procedure before vehicles can leave the country.

“The yellow Lamborghini, engine number DHU005304, was being driven by the legislator’s young brother, Professor Tatenda Wadyajena (32) a footballer, and the red BMW X6 Engine number 21470026 was being driven by Kudakwashe Kuora (32), a customs clearing agent,” said a border official on condition of anonymity.

“We got information that the lawmaker was allegedly moving his assets to South Africa ahead of the conclusion of his Cottco alleged fraud trial.

“The two vehicles were transported in a car carrier and were offloaded in Beitbridge before being driven through the Beitbridge border where we impounded them”.

The official said the two vehicles arrived at the border post around 10am with border staff told that they were being taken for routine service in South Africa.

The security agents were suspicious about the timing by the legislator to move the two vehicles soon after getting bail pending trial in the US$5 million Cottco fraud case.

When contacted for comment, Wadyajena promised to call back before going silent. “I will call you back later once I get settled,” said the Gokwe-Nembudziya parliamentarian.

For the better part of the day, the two impounded vehicles were a centre of attraction at the border for many travellers.

Security officials had a hard time controlling those who sought to take pictures of the two luxury cars.

The security agents were suspicious about the timing by the legislator to move the two vehicles soon after getting bail pending trial in the US$5 million Cottco fraud case.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi was not readily available for comment last night.

The legislator, who chairs the parliamentary committee on agriculture, is accused of being part of a US$5 million siphoning of funds from Cotton Company of Zimbabwe, in particular of having his transport company receive 25 trucks from an American company that had been allegedly paid to supply bale ties to Cottco but instead had allegedly supplied the trucks that were taken over by what is assumed to be Wadyajena’s company.

The legislator was arrested on Tuesday and charged with fraud and money laundering involving US$5 million together with three Cottco bosses and two companies, including his Mayor Logistics.

The other accomplices are suspended Cottco managing director Pious Manamike (54), suspended Cottco head of marketing Maxmore Njanji (47), Cottco acting procurement manager Fortunate Molai (34).

The accused persons were each granted $200 000 bail by a Harare magistrate and ordered to surrender title deeds of their properties as surety.

Charges are that sometime in 2019, the group allegedly opened a shelf company Pierpont Moncroix Zimbabwe.

Shortly afterwards, a Mauritian company with a similar name, but according to what the court was told had no connection to the Zimbabwean company, was recommended by Molai to supply Cottco with 3,2 million high carbon bale ties valued at US$2,6 million to cater for 2019 ginning season.

Instead of importing the bales, the group switched the payment to an American company and then imported 25 trucks between 2019 and 2020 using the bale tie money and these trucks were later registered under Mayor Logistics.

In November of the same year, Manamike and Njanji are accused of issuing a second purchase order on behalf of Cottco, which was valued at US$1 106 000 for the purchase of the bale ties from the same American Giant Equipment company.

The order was then approved even though Giant Equipment had failed to deliver the first order.

Molai is alleged to have sent an email to the Cottco’s treasurer in November 2021 in which she requested the company to pay a deposit of US$2 500 000 to Energy Park Company for more bale ties.

The money was paid in instalments with some of it being then transferred to Maropafadzo Energy (Pvt) Ltd. Herald

Govt Shamelessly Exports Teachers To Rwanda

State Media  -A total of 208 Zimbabwean teachers, more than 80 percent of those who sat, passed the written recruitment examinations to enable them to work in Rwanda and now face oral interviews next week.
The written online recruitment examinations were conducted on Wednesday and Thursday this week and the successful candidates have been invited for an oral interview from Tuesday next week in the final phase.

Mr Simon Masanga

The online recruitment examinations were conducted in Gweru, Bulawayo, Masvingo, Chinhoyi and Harare and were jointly administered by the Ministry of Labour, Public Service and Social Welfare and Rwanda’s Ministry of Education.

In an interview, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education in Rwanda Mr Charles Karakye said a total of 208 teachers passed the online recruitment interviews.

“We have just concluded the exams and 208 teachers participated for the set of exams. The next step is to do oral interviews. For those who participated, close to 80 percent passed the preliminary exam so we will get the final marks after doing the oral interviews which are scheduled for next week.

“We expected about 324 teachers then 260 attended. The memorandum of understanding we have with the Government of Zimbabwe is that Zimbabwe is open for business so we will be coming back to recruit more teachers,” he said.

Permanent Secretary for Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Mr Simon Masanga said Zimbabwe was happy with how the recruitment process was unfolding.

“For this first phase we flighted an advert which people responded to. We shortlisted candidates and shared the list with Rwanda and they were happy and then came here to do tests which were done electronically. We had teams in Gweru, Bulawayo, Masvingo, Chinhoyi and Harare and the process went on very well.

“We went through all the candidates and the pass rate is very impressive. It is over 80 percent. Those who passed are going for oral interviews starting from Tuesday up to Friday next week. By the end of the month we are expecting the final results and after the results we then organise for the health checks where we will be assisted by the Ministry of Health and Child Care and the National Social Security Authority. Thereafter people will go for security vetting then they can leave for Rwanda.”

Mr Masanga said the teachers would have a pre-departure training session in Harare.

On December 23 last year, the Ministry of Education of Rwanda and the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare of Zimbabwe signed a memorandum on exchange of educational personnel and expertise. This was followed by the issue of a Recruitment Manual on May 4 this year to guide the process of recruitment and employment of Zimbabwean teachers in Rwanda.

Following an agreed on plan of activities, Zimbabwe shared with Rwanda a list of 473 recommended candidates for Rwanda to register them in the e-recruitment system.

The next and most important stage was to administer online recruitment examinations which led to the confirmation of five provincial examination centres by Zimbabwe on August 1, 2022. -Herald

Cleric Flees Zanu PF Terror

AFM Zimbabwe pastor Muroyiwa flees political persecution from deadly Zanu PF and police

As police and Zanu PF manhunt Rev. Muroyiwa as they perceive him to be “most dangerous” pastor who can influence christians to vote for CCC party in 2023 elections.

19 August 2022

By Prince Mudamburi

The AFM Zimbabwe youthful pastor and former MDC Alliance Chaplin General Blessing Muroyi flees Zimbabwe due to heavy political persecution by the ruling party Zanu PF and deadly security forces.

Pastor Muroyiwa is with Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party in Zimbabwe after MDC Alliance led by Mwonzora fired him and President-chamisas-message-of-hope-2

Then President Chamisa formed political party CCC. This party is now the biggest opposition party in Zimbabwe. Many CCC members are languishing in prison including Members of Parliament honourable Job Sikhala, honourable Godfrey Sithole.

Pastor Muroyiwa is a political activist, who was appointed Chaplin General of the biggest political party in Zimbabwe by the then President Morgan Richard Tsvangirai in 2008.

In September 2019, Pastor Muroyiwa was arrested by partisan Zimbabwe Republic Police after he gave opening prayer at prayer meeting in Harare, Zimbabwe.

Ruthless Zimbabwe Republic Police and Zanu PF thugs subjected Pastor Muroyiwa to heavy beatings. He suffered physical and emotion problems due to police brutality.

To save his life, pastor Muroyiwa had to flee to Japan. He cannot come back to Zimbabwe because Zanu PF and police have listed him on the wanted list.

Zanu PF has history of killing anyone who voice against it’s corruption and other evil activities. Opposition members such as Tonderai Ndira , Learnmore Jongwe, Itai Dzamara were killed by Zanu PF and deadly security forces.

One of his relatives who spoke on condition of anonymous said, “On 14th August 2022, about 8 Zanu PF supporters came to Pastor Muroyiwa’s house and asked about his whereabouts. We told them that he is in Japan. Then Zanu PF officials told us to inform Pastor Muroyiwa not to come back to Zimbabwe.”

Zanu PF thugs went to Rev. Muroyiwa’s house after they read his Facebook post on 1April 2022, false day. He had posted that he has arrived in Zimbabwe.

Commenting on this new and constant political persecution, Pastor Muroyiwa said, “It’s true that l received reports that Zanu PF and police are looking for me with intention to harm me. This creates fear in me. It’s sad, that l am being haunted for my political views.”

The energetic and youthful AFM pastor Muroyiwa was instrumental in creating MDC Alliance provincial Chaplains across Zimbabwe. This has made him one enemy among Zanu PF supporters. Pastor Muroyiwa is regarded as an agent of change in Zimbabwe according to Mr Munyaradzi Muzenda a political analyst.

Before his departure to Japan, Pastor Muroyiwa was part of the fearless Zimbabwean pastors who actively participated in Christian Vote Campaign. This organisation, had a main objective to advocate for christians in Zimbabwe to register to vote. Again, Zanu PF was against this organisation as it regarded it as pro-opposition.

Since his departure to Japan in October 2019, Christian Vote Campaign has been very ineffective and as a result few christians will votes in 2023 harmonized elections in Zimbabwe.

Rev Manduna the Bulawayo provincial Chaplin Chairperson told this publication that since the departure of Pastor Muroyiwa there is no proper drive on Christian Vote campaign which is a cause of worry as we are approaching the 2023 election without a proper strategy on mobilising the Christian Vote.

Pastor Muroyiwa left the Zimbabwe after being abducted and beaten following his involvement in political activities. Pastor Muroyiwa with other notable pastors such as Douglous Mambure Aleck Matimba and Rev Munemo Tadious after being accused by state agents for trying to block the Zanu PF First lady Auxillia Mnangagwa to attend and address an AFM church gathering in Masvingo, Zimbabwe. This story of trying to block Zanu PF and the wife of Zimbabwe President Mnangagwa was also reported in H-Metro Newspaper that belong to Zanu PF.

According to one police source that is sympathetic to Pastor Muroyiwa said, “If pastor Muroyiwa returns to Zimbabwe, the state will charge him with the allegation of intending to overthrow a Zanu PF constitutionally elected government through mobilising the church community to be involved in political affairs”.

Zanu P F government has a bad record of killing, persecuting and arresting church leaders such as Rev. Evan Mawaire, Rev. Magaya, Priest Pius Ncube, Rev. Talent Chiwenga among others.
