Stranded Zimbabweans: We’re Being Forced to Join Ukrainian Army

By A Correspondent | The Ukranian government is still to comment on reports that Zimbabweans are facing coercion to join the Ukrainian army, creating a dire situation for individuals seeking refuge. According to four Zimbabweans interviewed by ZimEye, they find themselves at a dead end with limited options.

A representative of the affected individuals revealed, “Temporary residency permits for six of us were abruptly canceled. The Foreign Affairs department conveyed that assistance is contingent on intervention from our home country. Although third nationals now require regular visas, obtaining them has proven elusive. Our appeals in court for necessary documents were met with denials.”

Efforts by the Zimbabwean embassies in Sweden and Germany to communicate with their Ukrainian counterparts have yielded no results. The situation is exacerbated by the subtle pressure faced by individuals, as one source stated, “They don’t openly tell you to join the military, but they leave you stranded, making it feel like the only option.”

It is reported that Ukrainian authorities are impeding people from leaving the country. This marks a departure from the support provided during the initial stages of the 2022 war when the Zimbabwean embassy and the Russian army assisted departing individuals.

The Ukrainian government faces scrutiny over alleged abuses against African migrants, prompting calls for intervention from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). This incident is part of a series of accusations pointing to potential breaches of international law by Ukrainian authorities.

Financial constraints have added to the ordeal, with one individual revealing, “We have used up all our money while trying to leave.” Some have faced detention on immigration grounds, specifically due to the proximity of expiration dates on their status papers.

The difficulties extend to seeking help from international organizations. One source shared, “Last time we went to a UN-related organization, and they directed us to the Hungarian authorities to issue papers. But how can we approach the Hungarians when Ukraine is supposed to provide assistance?”

As the situation intensifies, urgent calls for international intervention are being made to address the plight of Zimbabweans in Ukraine, emphasizing the need for a prompt resolution to ensure the safety and rights of those affected.

Constantino Chiwenga and his new wife

**A Cry for Release:**
Marry Chiwenga appealed for global support, especially from mothers, to advocate for the release of her children into her custody without fear of victimization. She lamented the lack of response to her suffering and questioned the silence surrounding her plea for justice.

Mnangagwa Desperate For Grace Mugabe Endorsement

By A Correspondent| Zanu PF leader President Emmerson Mnangagwa has once again laid bare his desperation to have the former First lady Grace Mugabe endorse him after the nasty November 2017 events that results in the fall of long time ruler Robert Mugabe.

Speaking at the wedding of his Vice President Constantino Chiwenga yesterday, Mnangagwa urged Grace Mugabe to forget about the past (November 2017 coup) and become part of the so called new dispensation spearheaded by the same people who tormented her late husband.

In his speech, Mnangagwa made the following remarks…

“Muno matiri tina First Lady vedu, Mai Mnangagwa varimo, asi tina former First Lady vari muno Mai Mugabe, Grace, ndinofara kuti mavuya hamuna kuda kuzvisarudza kuti AAH zvino zvangu zvakapera, ahh bodo, tiri tese nyika ndeyedu tose, zvakaitika zvakaitika, zvasara sure ngatiendei mberi, ndafara kuti mauya former first lady nemhuri yenyu, i am very happy that you are here, hongu uyu ndi soko imiwo muri soko, eeh uyu anoba but imi andina kumbonzwa kuti imi munoba, hamheno kuti pa soko apa varume ndovanoba here kana kuti mose, Chiwenga. Kuba uku kwesoko ndekwevarume kana kuti mose nehanzvadzi? ….”

“I am happy you have come, please you are part of us, never, never feel that you are not part of us madam, be with us as we move on,” said Mnangagwa.

Grace Mugabe has been spotted at a number of state functions including Mnangagwa’s inauguration ceremony held in August this year.

Her attendance at Chiwenga’s wedding could be as a result of her sharing the same totem with Mnangagwa’s deputy.

CCC In Audacious Gambit To Force Reinstatement Of Recalled Officials

By A Correspondent| In a strategic move that raises eyebrows and ignites fresh debates, the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Zimbabwe’s primary opposition force, has declared its intention to mobilize international backing for the reinstatement of its recalled elected officials, following the disputed August 23, 2023 elections.

Defying conventional wisdom and embracing an unconventional approach, CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi, in a statement dubbed “The Global Appeal for Electoral Justice,” announced the party’s resolve to seek support from international bodies such as the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

Mkwananzi argued, “The disputed election on the 23rd of August 2023 remains a stain on the democratic fabric of Zimbabwe. To rectify this injustice, we call upon the global community to intervene and ensure the rightful reinstatement of our elected officials.”

The CCC’s decision to sidestep local legal avenues in favor of an international appeal stems from its mistrust of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) and the perceived collusion with the ruling ZANU PF party. Despite SADC’s earlier recommendation to pursue legal remedies within the country, the CCC is now taking its case to a global stage, seeking to leverage international pressure for a fresh and impartial electoral process.

Is it High Fashion in Video Games or Video Games in High Fashion?

Video games and high fashion may seem like two worlds apart, but in recent years, the lines between these seemingly disparate realms have become increasingly blurred. According to Cyberghost, a leading authority on online privacy and security, the relationship between high fashion and video games is a fascinating intersection that goes beyond aesthetics.

The Rise of Virtual Fashion Shows

In the digital age, virtual fashion shows within video games have become a captivating trend. Gaming platforms are now hosting virtual runways where players can dress their avatars in the latest virtual couture. This convergence of real-world fashion and virtual spaces has given rise to unique collaborations between fashion designers and game developers.

High-End Brands in Virtual Realms

Iconic high-end fashion brands are making their mark within popular video games. ED’s Donated Russian Choppers Missing As Woman Gives Birth Inside Kombi

Impromptu Kombi Delivery Exposes National Healthcare Woes

By Farai D Hove | ANALYSIS | In a startling incident, Ms Patricia Chitsa of Gimboki delivered a baby boy inside a crowded kombi en route to Sakubva District Hospital. The unexpected event unfolded near Sakubva swimming pool, turning the public transport into an impromptu delivery room.

Mnangagwa’s donated Russian choppers

“I never thought that I would deliver the baby that morning. I thought they would attend to me at the hospital,” expressed Ms Chitsa, still two months away from her due date. Fellow passengers quickly intervened as she cried for help, prompting the kombi crew to divert the vehicle for an urgent stop.

“The passengers shouted that a woman had gone into labour. At first, I thought it was a joke,” admitted Mr. Ronald Ngondonga, the supervisor turned driver for that trip. The kombi’s actual driver, Mr. Walter Mahwite, added, “The woman boarded the kombi together with her husband, but she did not show any signs of labour pain.”

Despite the unexpected drama, both mother and baby, named Tawanda, were pronounced healthy at Sakubva District Hospital. However, this incident casts a revealing light on a larger healthcare issue in the nation in 2023.

National Healthcare Crisis Exposed

The dramatic delivery underscores the scarcity of ambulances, despite the government’s claims of a fleet, including donated Russian Helicopter ambulances. This prompts concerns about the efficiency of emergency medical services, leaving citizens in precarious situations and resorting to unconventional means of delivery due to a lack of prompt medical assistance.

“I am still stunned about the whole incident. It was both scary and exciting to witness the drama,” said Mr. Tinotenda Maroso, a passenger present during the incident.

Passenger’s Perspective

The pre-teen girl, on her way to holiday lessons, played a crucial role in ensuring a safe delivery. “The nurses told us that the baby and his mother were healthy after examining them at Sakubva District Hospital. We refunded the couple their fare. We gave them the money as a push gift because we saw it as a blessing,” said Mr. Frank Manjeese, the “Yellowbone” kombi conductor.

Urgent Call for Improved Healthcare Infrastructure

As citizens celebrate the unexpected arrival of baby Tawanda, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure, including accessible ambulances, to prevent such situations and ensure the well-being of expecting mothers nationwide.

Zimdancehall Singer Freeman Finds Himself In A Tight Spot Over Association With Armed Robbers

Dancehall sensation Freeman finds himself embroiled in controversy again as an alleged accomplice involved in a string of robbers shot by police last week.

The incident raises questioning Freeman’s association with criminals.

In 2021 a picture of Freeman and Charles Chirara, one of the three robbers gunned down during a Chadcombe shoot-out circulated on social media with both incidents happening a few days after the release of the album ‘Robbery’, prompting detectives from the CID Homicide Section calling him (Freeman) in for questioning to elucidate his association with the criminals.

Sources close to the investigations said when he was questioned, Freeman revealed that the picture was taken sometime in 2016 and that he personally knew Chirara as a fan and voluntary show bouncer.

He said Chirara, who was shot dead by former CID detective Joseph Nemaisa, used to attend his shows as a fan and didn’t know that Chirara was an armed robber.

Social media users have questioned the coincidence of the shootings of Freeman’s armed robber friends and his album ‘Robbery’ with many suggesting that the inspiration for the album came from the musician’s real life experiences and association with robbers.

The Robbery video shows Freeman getting himself into a robbery activity in a bid to make money so that he can take care of his girlfriend, who is taking care of his bedridden father.

Businessman and Freeman’s friend Tinashe Mutarisi plays the lead role in the video as the robbery mastermind.

Mnangagwa Suspiciously Praises VP Chiwenga At Wedding

Mnangagwa’s Praise for Chiwenga Clashes with Reality of Family Strife and Healthcare Crisis

By Farai D Hove | ANALYSIS | Harare, Zimbabwe — In a seemingly paradoxical turn of events, President Emmerson Mnangagwa extolled Vice President Dr. Constantino Chiwenga as an excellent leader during the wedding reception of Chiwenga and Colonel Miniyothabo Baloyi. However, this commendation sharply contradicts the apparent failures and controversies surrounding Chiwenga’s personal life and governance.

Family Strife:
President Mnangagwa’s laudatory remarks about Chiwenga’s integrity and sacrifice for the nation stand in stark contrast to the reports of family discord. Chiwenga has been accused of neglecting his children from various mothers, with complaints surfacing, particularly from his eldest son. The three children he shares with Marry Mubaiwa have allegedly been violently blocked from seeing their mother for over three years, painting a grim picture of family disarray.

Hospital Infrastructure Crisis:
While President Mnangagwa commended Chiwenga’s commitment to nation-building, the reality on the ground tells a different story. Chiwenga, who oversees the health portfolio in the government, has faced criticism for the deteriorating state of the country’s hospital infrastructure. The healthcare system, already fragile, has suffered under his leadership, raising questions about his effectiveness in managing critical public services.

Contradictions Unveiled:
The contradictions between Mnangagwa’s accolades and the real challenges faced by Chiwenga expose a disconcerting dissonance within the leadership. Despite the public praise for Chiwenga’s leadership qualities and sacrifices, the apparent failures in both personal and professional spheres cast doubt on the narrative of a united and prosperous Zimbabwe under his guidance.

Unanswered Questions:
As the nation grapples with these revelations, unanswered questions linger about the future trajectory of Zimbabwe. The stark contrast between political rhetoric and lived experiences highlights the need for a more nuanced understanding of leadership and governance in the country.

The wedding reception, attended by dignitaries including former First Lady Grace Mugabe, brings attention not only to the union of Chiwenga and Baloyi but also to the underlying complexities within Zimbabwe’s political elite. As the nation navigates these contradictions, the true measure of leadership effectiveness remains a subject of ongoing scrutiny and debate.

Emmerson Mnangagwa said VP Chiwenga had exhibited boundless patriotism and honour, virtues that were requisite for nation-building.

“As we go away, we are satisfied that we leave men of integrity; men who have seen it all, to continue walking the correct line of the revolution and to continue leading this country to prosperity and to continue to maintain unity of the nation,” he said.

Dr. Chiwenga, he said, had exhibited characteristics of an excellent leader since the days of the liberation war, traits that led to his secondment to the High Command.

“I am extremely proud of my young brother, Dominic Chiwenga,” he continued. “We have worked together with Dominic for about 46 years. Throughout the war of liberation, he was one of our commanders and he was a member of the High Command.

“Thereafter when we became independent, he remained in the armed forces of the new Republic of Zimbabwe and he discharged all the assignments given by the First Republic as well as currently under the Second Republic.

“I congratulate him.”

VP Chiwenga, Mnangagwa said, was a man of unrestrained integrity “who does not take no for an answer.”

“He interrogates every aspect of an issue. I am sure everybody knows that it is not easy to rise to that level if you are not of high intellect.”

Dr. Chiwenga’s ascendency to the top was a result of hard work during a life journey that was characterized by much difficulty, said Mnangagwa.

“Dominic has walked a very, very hard journey from the time of our armed struggle,” he continued. “Most of his colleagues of his time in the 70s during our time in the liberation war are gone.

“Of course, there are still a few around who prosecuted our armed liberation struggle (along with VP Chiwenga) and rose through the ranks during that time when we were under our commander, the late Josiah Magama Tongogara.

“We promoted him to the High Command with his two colleagues, who are now gone – (Josiah) Tungamirai and (Paradzai) Zimondi.

“So, every time I see him, I see the other commanders that have left; and he is still a symbol of that armed struggle, which we waged.

He said there was a reason God had kept him alive, and it was pleasing to gather and celebrate his marriage.

“I am extremely gratified that this has happened and this is where we are.”

Mnangagwa urged Mrs. Chiwenga to be a mother to every Zimbabwean.

He said given that Dr. Chiwenga was one of the country’s Vice Presidents, she must take up the mantle of being a mother to every Zimbabwean.

“To you Mai Chiwenga, you have traveled a very tough journey,” he said. “Today you have shown the world that you are a mother to the Zimbabwean family because your husband is the Vice President.

“He is not the Vice President for Wedza. He is Vice President from Mutare to Plumtree and from Chirundu to Beitbridge, so you are now a mother to all people.”

He said soon she will be inundated by Zimbabweans from all walks of life seeking her assistance. Therefore, she should not look down on those in need of her help, counseled Mnangagwa.

“There shall come those who are less privileged, always open your arms and offer them help,” he continued. “Those who come from the East, West, North, and South, do not look down upon them.”

Mnangagwa also urged Mrs. Chiwenga to unite Zimbabweans and teach young people about the country’s cultural heritage.

Budiriro Floods: One Child Dies

SOME residents of Budiriro West suburb in Harare have been left counting their losses after their homes were flooded by the incessant rains on Thursday evening.

The homes, which were built on a wetland adjacent to a river in Budiriro West, have not been spared by the incessant rains that have also flooded other high-density areas and low-lying areas in the country.

The Marimba River broke its banks Thursday night, with a family allegedly having lost a child whom the mother was carrying on her back trying to cross to safety.

When the ZBC News crew visited the area this Friday, police were in the area investigating the alleged drowning of the child.

Even with such news, that still did not deter some of the residents who could be seen crossing the flooded river.

Residents of the area, which experiences flooding every rainfall season, are counting their losses.

“The situation is bad and the rains are showing no sign of subduing but because this is our home we have no choice but to stay,” said one of the residents.

Another added, “It’s sad that a life has been lost but the situation is very bad but because of desperation people still stay.”

“The city council is responsible for this mess which we are in. Our stands have papers but still, the city council has not resolved these flooding crises we face yearly,” said another resident.

“Every rainy season, this area is a disaster. The area will be flooded and sometimes the water gets into our homes.

When there are heavy rains, those with cars will leave them near the main road, which is tarred,” another reiterated.

These Budiriro residents are part of many countrywide who have fallen victim to land barons who parcel out land on wetlands unfit for housing.

Despite the rainfall season starting late, the downpour witnessed during the past couple of days has left a trail of destruction and displaced families.

Government Fat Cat Denounces Corruption, Is He Serious?

THE government has implored land officers to shun corruption in discharging their duties, especially in land distribution and dispute resolution.

The rampant illegal sales and distribution of state land by lands officials were topical at a one-day land use and planning management training workshop held at the Midlands Convention Centre in Gweru this Thursday.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Professor Obert Jiri implored lands officers to uphold utmost sincerity and shun corruption in executing their duties.

He said, “Let us make the land issue the pride of our nation through cultivating a culture of absolute transparency, sincerity, and fostering a corrupt-free environment. I want to take this opportunity to warn you that whoever will be involved in corruption entanglements will face the long arm of the law.

We want you to represent the ministry well by executing your duties well.”

Professor Jiri noted the need to rotate land officers as a measure to mitigate corruption.

Grace Mugabe Betrays Husband, Caught On Camera Contacting Mnangagwa

Unraveling Irony and Betrayal: The Cold Atmosphere of Saturday’s Political Saga

By Farai D Hove -| On a chilling Saturday, the political landscape witnessed a peculiar convergence of irony and betrayal as former First Lady Grace Mugabe, widow of the late Robert Mugabe, ventured into a controversial rendezvous. The event marked a stark departure from the morals upheld by her late husband, leading to a juxtaposition of historical significance.

The Cold Atmosphere:
The atmosphere on this particular Saturday exuded an icy tension as Grace Mugabe, once the epitome of loyalty to Robert Mugabe’s presidency, found herself in the company of military generals who had violently ousted him from power in November 2017. The betrayal was palpable as she mingled with the very figures responsible for her husband’s forced exit, creating a surreal and uncomfortable setting.

Controversial Connections:
Adding fuel to the already blazing controversy, Grace Mugabe was observed engaging with 40 Catholic priests. This interaction took a scandalous turn as these priests were implicated in violating the tenets of the Catholic religion by presiding over the white wedding ceremony of General Constantino Chiwenga. The general, having been divorced multiple times, contravened the Catholic doctrine, further deepening the moral quagmire surrounding the event.

Family Strife:
The repercussions of this controversial union extended beyond the immediate participants. The children of General Constantino Chiwenga from his previous marriage with Marry found themselves entangled in a three-year-long separation from their mother. The event, therefore, became a poignant reminder of the collateral damage inflicted on innocent family members.

President Mugabe’s Reaction:
In a surprising twist, President Mugabe, who had previously condemned his successor, referred to the situation as a “disgrace upon ourselves.” This statement hinted at a desire to rectify the fractured relationship between the Mugabe legacy and the current political regime. However, this sentiment was overshadowed by Grace Mugabe’s physical greeting of the man she had once labeled a child rapist in 2017, raising questions about the authenticity of her actions.

Symbolic Handshake:
The handshake between Grace Mugabe and the man she had accused of heinous crimes could be interpreted as a symbolic act of spiritual adultery. The reconciliation, seemingly driven by political expediency, underscored the complex and unpredictable nature of power dynamics in the political landscape.

Saturday’s events marked a surreal intersection of irony and betrayal, weaving a narrative that challenges the established norms of political conduct. The cold atmosphere of the day resonated with a sense of discomfort and unease as individuals associated with conflicting interests and histories converged, leaving observers to ponder the intricate tapestry of power, morality, and personal choices.

Mnangagwa Insults Ndebeles, Says Forget About Gukurahundi And Move On

By James Gwati- Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa has dismissed the significance of the Gukurahundi tragedy, urging those impacted to let go of the issue and move forward.

Mnangagwa’s statements were issued in a press release on Friday, marking Unity Day—a holiday established in 1987 to commemorate the coerced amalgamation of ZAPU and ZANU into ZANU-PF.

Unity Day, however, stems from a dark period in Zimbabwe’s history—the Gukurahundi, an atrocious civil conflict spanning over five years that resulted in the deaths of over 20,000 individuals, predominantly from Joshua Nkomo’s ZAPU in the Matabeleland and Midlands provinces.

The civil war, orchestrated by the state through Mnangagwa’s office when he held the position of Central Intelligence (CIO) Minister, followed Mnangagwa’s alleged misrepresentation to the then Prime Minister, Robert Mugabe, stating that Nkomo and his followers posed a national threat warranting lethal action.

Subsequently, soldiers were deployed to Nkomo’s regions, leading to the tragic loss of more than 20,000 Ndebele lives.

The Gukurahundi atrocities involved the deployment of the North Korean-trained Fifth Brigade, a notorious army regiment directly answerable to the late President Robert Mugabe, who was Prime Minister at that time.

This regiment played a central role in the brutal suppression and killing of civilians in the targeted regions.

Additionally, Nkomo and his people were arrested during this period, further intensifying the anguish and trauma inflicted upon the affected communities.

Despite the gravity of the Gukurahundi events, Mnangagwa has steadfastly refused to issue an apology for his role in the state-sanctioned massacres, perpetuating the unresolved legacy of Gukurahundi.

Below is Mnangagwa’s full speech on National Unity Day, where he rubbished Gukurahundi discussions:

Today marks 36 years since the illustrious icons of our liberation struggle and Founding Fathers, the late Comrades Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo and Robert Gabriel Mugabe, signed the historic Unity Accord, in Harare, on 22 December 1987.

The historic Unity Accord remains a guiding character of our beloved motherland, Zimbabwe. Riding on this timeless heritage, we must accelerate the attainment of our shared national vision for inclusive development and a modernised, industrialised, prosperous and empowered society.

I, therefore, challenge us, individually and collectively, to use this important National Unity Day to re-commit ourselves to safeguarding, preserving and promoting our rich heritage, for the benefit of both present and future generations.

As we commemorate this National Unity Day, it is also critically important that we safeguard and advance our national interests. Equally, every Zimbabwean, at home and those in the Diaspora, must remain encouraged by the fact that we are not stuck in the past nor consumed by the wounds of yester-year disturbances.

With hope and Our nation is moving forward determination, crafting a brighter and more prosperous future for all Zimbabweans, leaving no-one and no community or place behind.

The national healing process led by the traditional leadership has now been fully resourced as indicated in our 2024 National Budget. Community based programmes are set to commence next year, with a broad array of interventions that will involve the affected individuals and families.

Under the Second Republic, it is my pledge and commitment that development will be accelerated in those areas that suffered delayed progress, as a result of disturbances. This is the only way to address the needs of these affected communities for genuine and sustainable broad-based and inclusive empowerment.

Fellow countrymen and women; Zimbabwe is a unitary state, with many cultures, languages and tribes, united under one national flag and national anthem. Our motherland is endowed with great wealth and resources, above and beneath our sacred soil.

To fully exploit the opportunities before us for the benefit of all, we must close ranks and focus on nation building.

The divide and rule tactics perpetrated during colonialism and being attempted by opportunistic neo-liberals must never be given a foothold in our country. United we stand, divided we fall.

As such, let us all reject regionalism, tribalism, self-hate and all forms of violence. We have a duty and responsibility to work harder with honesty and integrity to utilise the vast opportunities that are before us.

Increased production and productivity across all sectors of the economy, remain our collective priority.

Our developmental philosophy, ‘Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevene vayo/ Ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabanikazi balo’ must now be distilled right down to the family and community levels; Musha ne dunhu zvinovakwa nevene vazvo.

Similarly, our national character of a united people must be exhibited by Zimbabweans in the diaspora. No matter where you are in the world, you must be united; you are one people, with one country and one motherland, Zimbabwe.

On our part as Government, the formulation and implementation of policies, programmes and projects will continue to be based on inclusivity.

Our socio-economic development agenda is leaving no one and no place behind.

The decentralisation of national events such as Independence Day celebrations, which we begun last year, signifies our commitment to national unity and participatory governance.

Dam construction, energy, health and education infrastructure projects are being implemented for the

benefit of all Zimbabweans. We are lifting many more of our people out of poverty into prosperity.

Fellow Zimbabweans;

Our history must help inform and shape our development trajectory for a brighter and more prosperous future.

Together as a united people, we are the only guarantors of our independence, peace, stability, freedom and development. Let us, therefore, remain patriotic and continue wholeheartedly serving our great motherland, Zimbabwe.

Through hard honest work, we are realising success and prosperity. Step by step, brick by brick and stone upon stone, the Zimbabwe we all want, is becoming a reality.

In conclusion, I urge the nation, motorists and the commuting public to exercise extreme caution on our roads. Let us always remain responsible citizens at all times.

With these remarks, I wish all Zimbabweans at home and in the Diaspora, a merry Christmas and a prosperous 2024. May the New Year bring hope and greater success for our beloved motherland, as we continue marching forward towards Vision 2030.

Seven Perish In Honda Fit Related Horror Crashes

By James Gwati- Seven people have died in separate accidents involving Honda Fit cars this week.

In the first incident, a fatal collision occurred along the Harare-Bulawayo Road around 6:30 am, involving a Honda Fit carrying four passengers travelling towards Bulawayo on 21 December.

The vehicle collided head-on with a Toyota Aqua coming from the opposite direction, resulting in the instantaneous death of three individuals from the Toyota Aqua, including the driver and one person from the Honda Fit.

Five others sustained injuries, and the police report from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the details of the accident at the 343 km peg.

The names of the victims are yet to be disclosed.

In a separate incident on the Harare-Masvingo Road, on the same day, three individuals lost their lives in a collision between an Isuzu Rigid truck, carrying two passengers and heading towards Harare, and a Jaguar with three passengers heading towards Masvingo.

The tragic accident occurred around 1:00 am, with all three occupants of the Jaguar trapped and pronounced dead at the scene.

Mnangagwa Aides In Land Looting Spree

By-Zanu PF Bosses in Mutare have gone on a land looting spree, grabbing and selling state land to desperate home seekers.

Embarrassed by this thievery by its senior officials, the party suspended five of its Mutare District Coordination Committee(DCC) members who grabbed and sold land in the Gimboki area of Mutare using the ruling party’s name.

Zanu PF Manicaland provincial secretary for Information and Publicity, Sam Matema, confirmed the suspension of Mutare DCC chairman Binali Yard and other executive members Brian Marange, Tawanda Ndawe, Webster Mudzimwa and Trust Matimba.

In a statement this week, Matema, who is also the National Assembly for Buhera Central, said: “The Zanu PF provincial executive has suspended Mutare District Coordinating Committee (DCC) chairman, Binali Yard and four members of his executive — Brian Marange, Tawanda Ndawe, Webster Mudzimwa and Trust Matimba — on account of indiscipline and illegalities finding expression in the illegal parcelling of land in the Gimboki area of Mutare municipality under the cover of the party’s name.
“Zanu PF is a party that is principled, structured, disciplined and with order, and brooks no indiscipline and corrupt activities.
‘‘We formed the Government as the ruling party, and we want to see the genuine concerns of the citizenry being addressed by both local and Central Government in a legal and orderly manner without bringing the name of the revolutionary party — Zanu PF — into disrepute.”

Yard, Marange, Ndawe, Mudzimwa and Matimba were arrested last week by a team of detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department’s Police Anti-Corruption Unit and CID Homicide from Harare.
They allegedly contravened Section 24 (1) as read with Section 24 (4) of the Regional Town and Country Planning Act, Chapter 19:12 (Unlawful carrying out development without permission) or alternatively criminal trespass as defined in Section 132 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

They were not asked to plead when they appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe who remanded them in custody to December 29.

In denying them bail, Mr Mahwe said Yard once fled from the police after a high-speed chase in Mutare.

He also stated that police had failed to arrest the five since September, and it had to take the intervention of law enforcement agents from Harare to bring them to book.

The court also ruled that Yard once threatened some witnesses from Mutare City Council who are the complainant; hence if granted bail, the accused persons might use their political influence to threaten witnesses.

The five were represented by Mr Chris Ndlovu of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners, while Mrs Tadiwanashe Muuya represented the State.

Mr Ndlovu was this week making frantic efforts to approach the High Court for the five’s bail application.
“We filed the appeal at the High Court. We are informed that the State will oppose it. We are still waiting for their written response,” said Mr Ndlovu yesterday (Thursday). Manica Post

ZEC Defends Tshabangu, Throws Chamisa Under The Bus

By James Gwati- The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has rejected opposition leader Nelson Chamisa’s plea to withdraw nomination papers associated with candidates endorsed by Sengezo Tshabangu’s CCC faction.

Chamisa, the president of CCC, had formally communicated to ZEC, asserting that Tshabangu’s candidates were inappropriately using his image as party symbols.

Despite Chamisa’s request, ZEC’s Chief Elections Officer, Utloile Silaigwana, asserted the commission’s independence and rebuffed any interference from the CCC leader.

Silaigwana emphasized that political parties should address their internal conflicts internally rather than involving the electoral commission in such matters.

He stated, “If CCC has internal issues, they know where to go, they don’t come to us and give us directives. Otherwise, every other party will tell ZEC what to do, and it will do so.”

Chamisa, represented by Shava Law Chambers, had informed ZEC that certain candidates were misusing his image and urged the electoral body to intervene.

He clarified that he had granted permission for the CCC party to use his image solely for the August 2023 elections.

In response, Tshabangu, claiming to be the interim Secretary General of the CCC party, argued that Chamisa’s image belongs to the party and serves as one of its symbols. According to Tshabangu, Chamisa no longer has the right to use the image outside of the party.

The dispute has led to the possibility of multiple CCC candidates in certain constituencies during the upcoming by-elections in February 2024, as both Tshabangu and Chamisa have fielded their own candidates under the CCC banner.

The resolution of this matter may ultimately require legal intervention if some candidates are not disqualified.

Mafume Re-Election As Harare Mayor Divides CCC Activists

By A Correspondent| Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists have been clashing on social media since the re-election of Councillor Jacob Mafume as the Mayor of the City of Harare.

The clashes are as a result of some claims that Ian Makone and Kudzai Kadzombe were recalled as part of grand plan to have Mafume return to the helm.

Earlier on, a Twitter user by the name Solomon Harudzipwi and Advocate Thabani Mpofu had hinted back in October that the recall of Mayors and Councillors were meant to retain Mafume.

The debate was reignited when Mafume was re-elected on Thursday with one Twitter user Skilled rebhara posting that the recalls had achieved their intended purpose and will not continue.

This triggered former MDC Alliance youth leader Obey Sithole to respond arguing against Skilled Rebhara’s narrative while defending Mafume.

“It wasn’t rocket science to realize that recalls were going to spread to different cities. Now, going by the same argument, when Mayors in Masvingo, Mutare, Kwekwe, Chitungwiza etc. were recalled was it also because they also wanted to reinstate Mafume in all those places?” said Sithole.

Sithole faced backlash from CCC members and activists who accused him of being a former PDP member among other crimes.

Mafume himself has also posted on Twitter dispelling claims that the councillors voted under heavy police presence.

“Councillors singing at the voting of the People’s Mayor Harare 1.No police in sight ,no bouncer ,just happiness across the board as it should be :why lie!,” said Mafume before uploading a video of councillors singing during the elections.

I’m No Armed Robber- Freeman

Zimbabwean musician Freeman has vehemently denied any connection to armed robbery activities. Freeman, through his lawyer Dumisani Mthombeni, clarified that his association with the late Godknows Machingura, a South African music promoter slain by the police, was purely related to showbiz business.

According to Freeman, his interactions with Machingura began in 2017 when the latter promoted one of his shows in Durban, South Africa. The artist emphasized that Machingura’s involvement in his life was centered around the music industry, and he categorically refuted any allegations linking him to criminal activities.

Freeman’s camp highlighted that like many other local artists, they had performed in South Africa thanks to Machingura’s support. The musician insisted that his social media posts featuring Machingura were expressions of gratitude for the promoter’s sponsorship of one of his music videos, ‘Unobvuma Here,’ featuring Nox.

Machingura, who was based in Durban, had been known for promoting musicians from Zimbabwe and sharing photos with them on social media. However, the recent police report indicated that he was among the armed robbers shot by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, allegedly monitoring the movement of their target in Shamva.

Despite the shocking revelation, Freeman’s fans have rallied behind him, emphasizing that his role as a musician doesn’t imply involvement in criminal activities. Many argue that the intersection of crime and entertainment is not uncommon, with promoters occasionally engaging in shady deals. Fans believe Freeman, like other artists, may unknowingly be associated with individuals involved in criminal activities.

As the story unfolds, Freeman remains firm in asserting his innocence, maintaining that he is solely dedicated to his career in music and distancing himself from any criminal elements.

Mnangagwa’s Cronies Benefit From Borehole Drilling Contracts

Zanu-PF legislator and gold dealer Scott Sakupwanya’s firm Better Brands is one of the eight firms that was granted lucrative contracts to sink boreholes across the country under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s programme targetting rural areas, the Zimbabwe Independent has learnt.

Another close Mnangagwa ally awarded the lucrative contract is Paul Tempter Tungwarara through his company, Prevail International.

In 2021, Mnangagwa launched the Presidential Rural Development Programme, a scheme earmarked to benefit 1,8 million households.

A running investigation by the Independent showed that two years after the scheme commenced, the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) has managed to drill 2 534 boreholes from a target of 35 000.

State-run Zinwa is implementing the programme.

The investigation intended to reveal the beneficial owners of firms awarded tenders to drill boreholes in Zimbabwe’s rural areas.

Apart from Sakupwanya’s Better Brands, other firms which were subcontracted to install boreholes by Zinwa include Skylakes, Venture Drilling and Exploration, Rockbuster, Jianxi International, Nakiso and Hofalox (Joint Venture) and Baba Drilling and Garron (trading as Aquamat Drilling).

At the time of going to print, this publication had not yet established some of the beneficial owners of the firms, including the shareholding structure of the entities.

Sakupwanya, who was recently elected Mabvuku House of Assembly representative did not responded to questions posed by the Independent.

Zinwa corporate communications and marketing manager Marjorie Manyonga told the Independent the sub-contracted firms were selected through the public tendering system and registers of beneficiaries were also available.

“All companies contracted by Zinwa are procured through the public tendering process. The eight companies contracted under the Presidential Rural Development Programme were procured through this process,” she said this week.

“The Authority has the list of all boreholes drilled under the Presidential Rural Development Programme complete with names, locations, coordinates, yield, depth, soil type, and formation targets villages, communities, schools, and institutions.”

Manyonga had not disclosed the specific terms of the contract awarded to Sakupwanya’s Better Brands including how much it will be paid for its services and the number of boreholes it will drill.

She also did not disclose the total cost of the program and how much Zinwa has spent so far.

Apart from the Presidential Rural Development Programme, Zinwa also runs a commercial borehole drilling arm which drills for individuals for a fee.

Manyonga said: “Transactions are treated as purely commercial with the necessary confidentiality that comes with such.”

Under Zinwa’s charges, Manyonga said the average cost of drilling a 40-meter borehole can be a minimum of US$700.

“However, there are special cases such as mud drilling where the cost of drilling a borehole can be as high as US$ 12 000,” she said.

“The authority however has all the details for these boreholes for purposes of records and are subjected to Zinwa processes like audit.”

Relating to the progress of the Presidential Rural Development Program,118 village business units have so far been set up, from a target of 35 000.

These village business units will be registered as commercial entities through the Agriculture Rural Development Authority (Arda).

“Under the programme, Zinwa will drill and equip 35 000 boreholes which form the anchor component for the village business units whose components include a solar-powered borehole, fishponds, water storage tanks, a one-hectare drip-irrigated horticulture garden, and communal water points,” Manyonga said.

“Other agencies taking part in the programme are Arda, which assists with the management and registration of the village business units as formal companies, Agriculture Marketing Authority (Ama), which helps the village business units connect with the markets, and AFC Holdings (formerly Agri Bank). AFC Holdings will avail funding for the business ventures.

The subcontracted companies, under the scope of the tenders, will set up infrastructure to support the village business units.

“The scope of the work for the companies contracted under the Presidential Rural Development Programme also extended to the setting up of infrastructure for the establishment of village business units (VBUs) and such infrastructure typically includes a one-hectare drip irrigated horticulture garden, water storage tanks, two fishponds and communal water points.

“To speed up the implementation of the programme, the government procured borehole drilling rigs for Zinwa.”

Support Our Call For Sikhala’s Release, Friends Appeal

Friends and sympathisers of Job Sikhala have appealed to progressive citizens to support their call for the unconditional release of the incarcerated opposition politician.

The former Member of Parliament (MP) has been in remand prison since his arrest in June last year on charges of inciting public violence.

He was accused of inciting Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters to avenge the killing of activist, Moreblessing Ali in Nyatsime, Chitungwiza.

On Wednesday, police banned a rally which was organised by the Job Sikhala Solidarity Council scheduled for Saturday to demand Sikhala’s release.

In a letter addressed to the organisers, police said the rally was a security threat as it did not meet provisions of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (Mopa).

Zimbabwe Communist Party secretary-general and one of the founding MDC members, Ngqabutho Nicholas Mabhena, said Sikhala was suffering political persecution.

“We are not fighting for the rule of law, but for the just legal system. The white minority regime had a rule of law which was used to oppress us. The Zanu PF regime has a rule of law that is used against us as seen with Cde Sikhala and others in a similar situation,” said Mabhena.

“There is nothing revolutionary about jailing comrades whose key mission is to transform our society. We call on all progressive forces in Zimbabwe and outside to join the Cde Job Wiwa Sikhala Solidarity Campaign,” he said.

Pro-democracy activist and national organiser of the Job Sikhala solidarity rally, Obert Masaraure, said they would soldier on in calling for Sikhala’s release.

“The council will not be deterred by this setback, a series of solidarity activities are lined up to rally the millions of pro-democracy campaigners in Zimbabwe and beyond to collectively demand the release of Job Sikhala,” he said.

Meanwhile, the court yesterday postponed the matter in which Sikhala is being charged with communicating falsehoods on Facebook.

The matter was before magistrate Feresi Chakanyuka.

The court heard that prosecutors who are dealing with the case delayed to file their submissions on time, resulting in the case being rolled over to January 3 for ruling.

Sikhala is being represented by Harrison Nkomo.

The State alleges that Sikhala used a Facebook account under the name “Job Wiwa Sikhala” to falsely publish that a police officer had killed a nine-month-old baby.

The State alleged that Sikhala’s statement was intended to incite or promote public disorder and anger against the police.

200 Clampers Fired

TTI Fires 200 Clampers Amidst Harassment Complaints | In a significant move, TENDY Three Investments (TTI), the prominent traffic management company in Bulawayo, has terminated the employment of more than 200 clampers due to allegations of indiscriminate clamping and violations of company policies.

Clampers in the act

Numerous motorists have raised complaints about being harassed by TTI employees, claiming they were clamped for minor offenses, some as trivial as outstanding tickets amounting to just US$5. TTI Managing Director, Lizwe Mabuza, emphasized the company’s commitment to enforcing procedures and customer handling, stating that there is zero tolerance for non-compliance.

Mabuza clarified the company’s stance, highlighting that motorists with debts below US$5 should not be clamped, as the system identifies such cases during payment processing. He defended the decision to terminate employees, asserting that maintaining a positive company image is paramount.

“We have relieved over 200 employees of duty because we will not tolerate employees tarnishing our image. We carefully assess each complaint, distinguishing between genuine concerns and those motivated by malice,” said Mabuza.

The surge in complaints coincided with the recent approval of the City of Bulawayo’s 2023 clamping and tow-away by-laws, granting TTI the authority to ticket and clamp any vehicle without a valid license disc within the city. The by-laws, sanctioned through Statutory Instrument 220 of 2023 by Local Government and Public Works Minister Winston Chitando, also mandated litter bins for all public service vehicles.

While acknowledging the increase in complaints, Mabuza urged caution, stating that not every grievance is legitimate. He emphasized the company’s commitment to scrutinizing the authenticity of claims, recognizing that some accusations may stem from motorists attempting to deflect attention from their own offenses.

The City of Bulawayo (Clamping and Tow-away) By-laws, 2023, empower authorized personnel to immobilize or tow away vehicles violating traffic regulations. The recent dismissals underscore TTI’s dedication to maintaining transparency and accountability within its operations, signaling a renewed focus on responsible and fair traffic management practices.- state media

Mnangagwa Praises Jaded Central Committee

ZANU PF President and First Secretary, Emmerson Mnangagwa has commended members of the ruling party’s highest decision-making body for providing requisite leadership which ensured a successful year.

He was addressing the ruling party’s last Central Committee meeting for this year in Harare this Thursday.

President Mnangagwa said as the year winds down, the ruling party has every reason to celebrate after many successes realised in 2023.

“Together, we have piloted the party throughout the year. We kept the party solid and united. This demonstrates the quality of leadership we have. We began the year with different tasks… that included the elections. I thus commend the Central Committee for providing the requisite leadership that resulted in an extremely successful year,” he said.

President Mnangagwa said despite the various machinations by Western powers, the country still managed to hold peaceful elections.

He added, “Our hard honest work saw us ultimately romping to victory. This was against the background of various malicious machinations by some Western countries who were bent on subverting our sovereignty.”

The Second Republic is known for the mantra ‘Nyika inovakwa nevene vayo, Ilizwe lakhiwa ngabanikazi balo’ and President Mnangagwa said it should now cascade to the villages.

“We want this to now include all those in the villages,” said the President.

This Friday, Zimbabwe celebrates Unity Day and President Mnangagwa spoke on the importance of the national day.

“Tomorrow, the country celebrated Unity Day. This important day on our national calendar is underwritten by the commitment of our founding fathers of ZAPU AND PF ZAPU,” he said.

President Mnangagwa also emphasised the need for unity in the ruling party to ensure national development.

Mnangagwa Unity Day Statement

As the nation commemorates Unity Day this Friday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has implored Zimbabweans to close ranks and focus on nation building for the benefit of present and future generations.

On the 22nd of December in 1987, two political parties ZANU and PF ZAPU signed the Unity Accord, a day not merely a mark on the calendar, but a symbol of a nation’s resilience and commitment to harmony.

Thirty-six years later, Zimbabwe continues to commemorate the day, which shaped the political, social and economic landscape of the country.

In his Unity Day message, President Emmerson Mnangagwa reflected on the importance of the Unity Accord.

“The historic Unity Accord remains a guiding character of our beloved motherland, Zimbabwe. Riding on this timeless heritage, we must accelerate the attainment of our shared national vision for inclusive development and a modernised, industrialised, prosperous and empowered society. I, therefore challenge us individually and collectively to use this important National Unity Day to re-commit ourselves to safeguarding, preserving and promoting our rich heritage for the benefit of both present and future generations. As we commemorate this National Unity Day, it is also critically important that we safeguard and advance our national interests,” said the President.

The Head of State said divisions, hatred and conflict among Zimbabweans should not be tolerated.

“Zimbabwe is a unitary state, with many cultures, languages and tribes, united under one national flag and national anthem. Our motherland is endowed with great wealth and resources, above and beneath our sacred soil. To fully exploit the opportunities before us for the benefit of all, we must close ranks and focus on nation building. The divide-and-rule tactics perpetrated during colonialism and being attempted by opportunistic neo-liberals must never be given a foothold in our country. United we stand, divided we fall. As such, let us all reject regionalism, tribalism, self-hate and all forms of violence. We have a duty and responsibility to work harder with honesty and integrity to utilise the vast opportunities that are before us. Increased production and productivity across all sectors of the economy remain our collective priority.”

President Mnangagwa added that his government will continue fostering peace and unity through the national healing process which is being led by traditional leaders under the mantra ‘leaving no one and no place behind’ in the country’s development agenda.

“Our nation is moving forward with hope and determination, crafting a brighter and more prosperous future for all Zimbabweans, leaving no-one and no community or place behind. The national healing process led by the traditional leadership has now been fully resources as indicated in our 2024 national budget.

Community-based programmes are set to commence next year with a broad array of interventions that will involve the affected individuals and families. Under the Second Republic, it is my pledge and commitment that development will be accelerated in those areas that suffered delayed progress as a result of disturbances. This is the only way to address the needs of these affected communities for genuine and sustainable broad-based and inclusive empowerment,” he noted.

With various major projects which include construction of new clinics countrywide, the New Parliament Building, the expansion of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and Hwange Thermal Power Station Unit 7 and 8 Expansion, among others, President Mnangagwa noted that increased production and productivity across all sectors of the economy remains his government’s priority.

Zanu PF Is Unstoppable, Declares Emmerson Mnangagwa

Zanu PF Bosses Steal Land

By-Zanu PF has suspended five of its Mutare District Coordination Committee(DCC) members for alleged indiscipline and illegal parcelling out of land in the Gimboki area of Mutare under the cover of the ruling party’s name.

Zanu PF Manicaland provincial secretary for Information and Publicity, Sam Matema, confirmed the suspension of Mutare DCC chairman, Binali Yard and other executive members, Brian Marange, Tawanda Ndawe, Webster Mudzimwa and Trust Matimba.

In a statement this week, Matema, who is also the Member of National Assembly for Buhera Central, said: “The Zanu PF provincial executive has suspended Mutare District Coordinating Committee (DCC) chairman, Binali Yard and four members of his executive — Brian Marange, Tawanda Ndawe, Webster Mudzimwa and Trust Matimba — on account of indiscipline and illegalities finding expression in the illegal parcelling of land in the Gimboki area of Mutare municipality under the cover of the party’s name.

Manica Post

Tshabangu Goes For Chamisa

By James Gwati – The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), rebel member Sebenzo Tshabangu has escalated tensions by threatening to terminate party leader Nelson Chamisa.

The self-appointed interim secretary-general has declared that even if Chamisa decides to leave the CCC, he would be prohibited from using the party’s image, particularly Chamisa’s face.

Tshabangu’s argument hinges on the claim that Chamisa willingly ceded ownership of his image to the party, imposing restrictions on its use by any other political entity.

He issued a stern warning of legal consequences if Chamisa were to violate this purported agreement, stating:
“I have no doubt in my mind that President Chamisa presented his face as a symbol for us to use, and we registered that face. So he can’t claim today that it’s his face. That’s the face of the party, and we are going to continue using it. Nobody is going to use that face. We will stop anybody who is going to use that face, save for the party. He cannot use that face outside, unfortunately, the CCC party.”

Tshabangu asserts that should Chamisa choose to depart from the party and employ his image elsewhere; legal action will be pursued.

Despite the existing disagreements, Tshabangu remains optimistic about resolving these issues amicably, stressing that they do not revolve around ideological differences.

While temporarily holding the position of secretary-general in the CCC party, Tshabangu faces opposition from senior members, including Nelson Chamisa, who dispute the legitimacy of such a role within the party.

Furthermore, there are claims that Tshabangu is not even a party member.

However, Tshabangu maintains his position, supporting it with an affidavit as evidence of his appointment.

He refrained from disclosing the appointing authority but clarified that the role was granted due to the dissatisfaction of certain senior members with Chamisa’s strategic approach for the 2023 elections.

Fun Facts about Passports

Passports are essential travel documents that open the gateway to new adventures, but there’s more to these little booklets than meets the eye. From quirky regulations to global variations, here are some fun and surprising facts about passports.

The World’s Most Powerful Passport

Singapore holds the title for the most powerful passport globally. Singaporean passport holders can enjoy visa-free access to an impressive number of countries — 164, making it a tempting document for globetrotters.

DIY Passport Photos

Gone are the days of stiff, studio-lit passport photos. In some cases, you can now take your passport photo yourself, and yes, even with your smartphone! Many countries accept self-taken photos as long as they adhere to specific guidelines. Lighting, background, and facial expression all play crucial roles, ensuring that your DIY photo meets the stringent requirements set by passport authorities. It’s a modern twist to the traditional process that adds a personal touch to your travel document.

Size Matters

When it comes to passport photos, size does matter – and we’re not talking about the physical dimensions of the booklet itself. Passport photo dimensions vary from country to country. While there’s a standard size recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), many nations have their own specific requirements. From the United States to India, each country has its preferred dimensions, making it crucial to double-check the specifications before snapping that picture.

The United States, for instance, mandates a 2×2-inch photo, while the European Union countries often stick to a 35x45mm size. These subtle differences may seem trivial, but they reflect the unique bureaucratic quirks of each nation.

Hair and Makeup Dilemmas

While it might be tempting to glam up for your passport photo, certain dress code rules govern your appearance in these crucial snapshots. Passport authorities usually prefer a natural and unaltered look, so it’s advisable to keep hair and makeup simple. Avoid heavy filters, extreme hairstyles, or distracting accessories. The goal is to ensure that you remain easily identifiable – even if your hair color or makeup style changes down the road.

Certain countries might have specific rules about facial coverings as well. Religious headgear is permitted, but other accessories that obscure the face could lead to photo rejection. It’s a delicate balance between expressing your personal style and adhering to the stringent guidelines designed to maintain the security and accuracy of your passport information.

Passport Art

Some countries have elevated passport design to an art form, incorporating intricate illustrations and vibrant colors that showcase their unique heritage. Norway, for instance, features picturesque landscapes and iconic symbols, while New Zealand captures the spirit of its indigenous Maori culture through traditional motifs. Indonesia, on the other hand, shows elements of the country’s culture and nature on pages of its passport.

E-Passports and Biometrics

In an era of technological advancements, many countries have adopted electronic passports, or e-passports, which include a chip containing the passport holder’s information. Additionally, biometric data such as fingerprints may be included, enhancing security measures and making it more challenging for counterfeiters to replicate.

Passport Expiration Rules

Many countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your planned date of departure. This rule aims to ensure that travelers have a valid travel document throughout their entire stay and can avoid potential complications upon arrival at their destination.

Passports may be a ticket to explore the world, but the process of obtaining and maintaining these travel documents comes with its own set of fascinating facts. The next time you prepare for an international journey, spare a moment to appreciate the intricacies and peculiarities that make passports more than just a booklet with stamps.

Hopewell Chin’ono Says Opposition’s Now Organised After Tshabangu’s Illegal Recalls

By A Correspondent | ZimEye | The latest in the Sengezo Tshabangu illegal recalls of elected representatives has seen the political commentator, Hopewell Chin’ono throwing a celebration that at last there is now an organised opposition party.

At the beginning of the year, Hopewell Chinono appeared in a notorious audio recording in which he advised a well-known military intelligence officer saying that Nelson Chamisa’s CCC party must split after the 2023 elections. Chin’ono said this is because according to him, Chamisa “has shown that he is incompetent.”

Chinono has a long history of working for the Zimbabwe military to compromise the security of tortured activists and in the long period after the overthrowing of the nation’s second elected government after the November 2017 coup; he was singularly instrumental in instructing the army to go after tortured activists at their safe houses where they were being treated by doctors.

During the 2018 and 2019 military crackdowns, Hopewell Chin’ono announced that he personally and singularly advised Vice President Constantino Chiwenga to regularly descend on doctors treating tortured activists as a method of fixing what he accused the tortured victims of- raising “tension” with the government.

“I am the one who suggested to the VP is the meeting that government should meet with diplomats regularly,” he writes on 30 August 2021 while accusing the western diplomats of sponsoring or encouraging the civic society demonstrations

He continues saying, “More importantly, I suggested that Government should with Civil Society regularly to avoid tension and suspicion.” (watch full video below).

As a result of this, scores of Chin’ono’s victims like Julius Choto, Alison Charles and others including rape victims are failing to get their compensation payments from the govt. (Watch video below)

That crashing of the opposition by the military included Chin’ono later appointing himself the “Daddy” of exposing corruption at the back of military assistance as he announced on 28 May 2020 that Nelson Chamisa’s party “will do nothing,” to expose corrupt people shortly before he would get arrested by the ZANU PF govt and get slapped with dismissable charges of incitement to violence, which police action instantly promoted him to social media stardom.

Around that time, a UK based female whistleblower working in the NHS Trust went on video in August 2020 to announce that Chin’ono would soon destroy the Zimbabwean nation because according to her, he is a dishonest man. “What he did to me without remorse, if he does it to Zimbabwe without remorse, will there be any chance of a reversal?,” she said on 18 Aug 2020, narrating how he allegedly harrassed her minor son in a WhatsApp group which made his father turn against him to the point of the dad refusing to speak with his own son for over 3 years.

She while slamming Chamisa’s party for supporting a man she accused of fraud, also revealed allegations that she personally witnessed Chin’ono doing credit card fraud, allegations upheld by a large crowd of Zimbabwean expats based in UK.

Reputed for money laundering in the UK Zimbabwe community, among many well known self confessing fraudsters of the 2K scandals who never got arrested in the period between 1995 and 2023, Hopewell Chin’ono (who changed his own surname) has also failed to disclose the UK bank or dealership that he says financed his sportscar lifestyle at 25 in the UK with a £50,000 sportscar loan (he says sprung him into property ownership), and Dr Nyasha Maboreke who he says validates his finances’s family has expressed concerns saying he (Chin’ono) is abusing their family name.

He has failed the most basic proceeds of crime test, as that done by his former employer, Geoff Nyarota (article- “Journalism rarely generates excessive wealth”), wherein he avoided explaining the source of his vast wealth.

In the latest development, the political imposter, Sengezo Tshabangu who has accomplished the illegal recalls of Nelson Chamisa’s representatives, Chin’ono has announced a celebration saying the party, now battered by Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ZANU PF party, is now organised, after the recalls.

He writes on 22 December 2023 saying, “heading into 2023 elections…there was no organised opposition. Now there[they] are there.”

Meanwhile, Hopewell Chin’ono was asked for a comment on 5 July 2023 in a debate on the Open Secrets’ Twitter platform where he after accusing the civil society of corruption was asked to respond to the abused community’s own accusation that he betrayed them to the military coup leader Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, and his his response to Simba Chikanza’s question while disrupting the questioning was an abrupt, “I think Simba (Chikanza), you have desire to follow me everywhere I go, and use your personal attacks on me…” he said. (AUDIO RECORDING BELOW)

Complaints against Hopewell Chin’ono have been raised years before since August 2020 by various people and Simba Chikanza only brought them up for questions in July 2023, 3 years later.

Ngezi Platinum Target Brito

2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions Ngezi Platinum Stars are contemplating adding Warriors coach Baltemar Brito to their technical team…

The platinum miners won their maiden league title, in a successful campaign which also saw them reaching the final of the Chibuku Super Cup, under the guidance of Takesure Chiragwi.

Ahead of their debut campaign in the CAF Champions League, the Madamburo executive is planning to rop in Brito as “Senior Coach”, with Chiragwi retaining his head coach post.

Brito’s contract with Bosso ends on December 31, and the Bulawayo giants have already appointed Kelvin Kaindu as the former Chelsea assistant coach’s replacement.

Brito’s arrangement with the ZIFA Normalisation Committee to coach the Warriors also ends on December 31, hence the Brazilian mentor is free to talk to any potential employers.

A source privy to ongoings in the Ngezi camp revealed that the Madamburo hierarchy indeed thought of the idea to add Brito to their technical team.

“The issue of approaching Brito was discussed by the bosses, they simply wanted to beef the technical team but wanted to do so carefully, so as not to belittle Takesure Chiragwi,” said the source.

“In fact, negotiations were in place the last time I checked, with suggestions that Brito would not bring his right hand man Antonio Torres, made clear to everyone involved,” added the source.- Soccer24 News

New Marimba Family Counts Cost of Dam Wall Demolition As Floods Destroys Property, Vehicles

By A Correspondent| A New Marimba family is grappling with substantial losses after floods wreaked havoc on their home destroying vehicles and property worth thousands of United States dollars.

The calamity ensued from the destruction of a longstanding dam wall, leaving the family vulnerable to the overflow of floodwaters.

According to a distressed family member, a housing cooperative is at the centre of the crisis, having recklessly dismantled a dam wall that had safeguarded the area for decades, even preceding the nation’s independence.

The absence of this protective barrier has unleashed flooding during rainstorms, inundating nearby residences.

“When the cooperative arrived, they began by demolishing a dam wall that had historically shielded our community from flooding. Now, every time it rains, water rushes into our homes,” explained a family representative.

The initial rainfall saw floodwaters reaching above knee level flowing through the family’s house, causing extensive damage amounting to over US$12,000 in property and rendering two vehicles, one of which is irreparable, unusable.

The heavy rains last night exacerbated the situation, resulting in further damage as the precast wall at the rear of the house succumbed to the pressure, allowing water to force its way inside.

When the ZimEye news crew arrived this morning, family members were diligently working to clear the water that had inundated the bedrooms, dining area, living room, and kitchen.

Expressing concern for the safety of their neighbour, a resident pleaded with the City of Harare to swiftly address the situation. “We implore the City of Harare to urgently reconstruct the dam wall as the lives of our neighbor and their family are at risk, especially with the onset of the rainy season,” the concerned neighbor stated.

Upon inspection of the affected area, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Environmental Technician Emmanuel Mandemwa suggested that the housing development might be a key factor in the predicament. Mandemwa pointed out that alterations to waterways caused by the development may have triggered the flooding.

“We need to assess the compliance of the housing development with environmental laws. If they had conducted an environmental impact assessment (EIA), this disaster could have been averted, as the report would have addressed the threat of flooding in the absence of a dam wall,” Mandemwa emphasized.

As residents grapple with the aftermath of the floods, urgent intervention from the City of Harare is crucial to mitigate further damage and ensure the safety of the affected families.

Mnangagwa Has Captured Nation, Unity Meaningless : President Chamisa

A UNITY DAY is meaningless unless and until it is driven by Unity values and UNITY POLITICS undergirded by a unity of direction, singleness of national purpose and a preponderance of patriotic duty and consciousness by all Zimbabweans, especially those occupying public national offices.

As of today, Zimbabwe is deeply divided and profusely bleeding on account of divisive, toxic, partisan and unpatriotic politics sponsored and perpetuated by a parasitic political elite. Zimbabwe is captured by those who purpose to thrive in a weak, failing and unstable Zimbabwe.

The state is personalized, the politics bastardized, the alternative is demonized and the law is weaponized against perceived political opponents.

Our otherwise beautiful country is now essentially a banana republic. Zimbabwe is not just at the risk of being turned into a one-party-state but a one-man-state! We must and will end this ugly era #OnePeople

The suspension was confirmed by Zanu PF Manicaland provincial secretary for Information and Publicity, Sam Matema, who emphasized the party’s commitment to principles and discipline. Matema stated that the suspensions were a result of illegal land transactions conducted under the party’s name.

The gravity of the situation escalated further as Yard, Marange, Ndawe, Mudzimwa, and Matimba were arrested by detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department’s Police Anti-Corruption Unit and CID Homicide from Harare. The charges include contraventions of the Regional Town and Country Planning Act and criminal trespass.

Appearing before Mutare provincial magistrate, Mr Tendai Mahwe, the accused were remanded in custody until December 29. Mahwe cited Yard’s previous evasion of the police, the delayed arrest since September, and potential threats to witnesses as reasons for denying bail.

The legal representation for the accused, led by Mr Chris Ndlovu of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners, has filed an appeal for bail at the High Court. The State, represented by Mrs Tadiwanashe Muuya, is expected to oppose the application.

This scandal has not only shaken the local Zanu PF structures but has also raised concerns about the misuse of political influence in legal matters. As the story unfolds, the fate of these suspended members and the implications for the ruling party remain uncertain. Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.

Man Suddenly Discovers Own Wife Secretly Married to Another Man

In a harrowing tale of betrayal, Tawanda Makwiramiti from Harare woke up to the devastating revelation that his in-laws allegedly deceived him by marrying off his wife, Rejoice Nheta, to another man, Laurence Alexander Muzah, behind his back.

Tawanda, recounting the sequence of events to B-Metro, revealed that he fulfilled the lobola payment for Rejoice on 23 January 2021, only to face a stipulation from the bride’s father, demanding that he not live with Rejoice until he finished lobola, citing her virginity.

Despite paying US$1,600 for lobola and an additional US$500 for groceries, her parents refused to allow Tawanda to take his wife, claiming the money was insufficient. It took him six months to raise another US$820, paid on 1 August 2021, before they allowed him to take Rejoice.

However, she stayed with Tawanda for only five days, refusing intimacy and eventually leaving for Bulawayo. Tawanda later discovered that Rejoice had been engaged to another man, and she had already been married off to him without issuing a divorce token.

Tawanda’s attempts to seek answers and a lobola refund were met with resistance and threats from Rejoice’s family. Rejoice applied for a protection order against Tawanda, barring communication.

Rejoice’s father, Norman Nheta, neither confirmed nor denied Tawanda’s claims, suggesting that Tawanda refused to accept the relationship’s end. Muzah, the alleged new husband, denied knowledge of the situation, while his mother confirmed the incident, stating that Tawanda interrupted lobola negotiations.

Tawanda has filed papers at the Harare Civil Court, suing Rejoice’s father for reimbursement. The case unfolds as a heart-wrenching saga of love, deception, and legal battles.- state media/B Metro

2 Men Killed While Drilling Borehole

In a devastating incident, two men lost their lives in Chipinge town earlier this week during a borehole drilling operation that took a fatal turn. Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wisemen Chinyoka, confirmed the tragic event, which unfolded in the Kelvin suburb of Chipinge.

The victims, Kelvin Takesure Mhlanga (29) and Farai Masvotore (42) from St Kelvin Farm, were contracted by Mr. Enock Khosa to drill a borehole at his residence. The ill-fated drilling took a fatal turn when, encountering a hard rock surface at the 21-meter level, the duo opted to use explosives to blast through the obstruction.

On December 18, tragedy struck as Mhlanga, working within the borehole, was overcome by dangerous gas. Struggling to breathe, he called for help. In a desperate attempt to rescue his colleague, Masvotore entered the borehole, only to succumb to the same perilous gas, leading to the untimely demise of both men.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka conveyed the details of the incident, emphasizing the dangers associated with using explosives in borehole drilling. Mr. Khosa reported the matter to the police, and the lifeless bodies of Mhlanga and Masvotore were recovered and transported to Chipinge District Hospital mortuary.

In an unrelated incident, the community faced another heart-wrenching loss as a Grade Six learner at Gumira Primary School, Winnie Murambiwa, met a tragic end while fishing with friends. Attacked by a crocodile at the confluence of Save and Dakate rivers on December 14, Winnie’s fate unfolded in a horrifying manner.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka verified the incident, detailing how Winnie’s friends, witnessing the crocodile attack, rushed home to notify their parents. Despite efforts to retrieve part of Winnie’s remains from the river, the young student lost her life in the brutal encounter.

Village head Kowanayi Machiya of Gumira area confirmed the incident, noting the engagement of ZimParks members from Chipangayi who attended the scene and took decisive action, killing the reptile. The community mourns the loss of these lives, and authorities urge caution in undertaking activities with inherent risks, such as borehole drilling and river-related endeavors.

Gwanda Solar Power Tender Haemorrhages USD23 Million with No Panels Assembled

Gwanda Solar Power Tender Haemorrhages USD23 Million with No Panels Assembled

In a staggering turn of events, the Gwanda solar power tender has witnessed the disappearance of USD23 million, leaving the project without a single solar panel assembled. This financial setback comes as a blow to the government’s efforts to harness solar energy and underscores challenges in managing public funds for crucial infrastructure projects.

However, amidst the Gwanda project’s financial woes, GWERU-based ferrochrome producer, Jinan-Almid (Pvt) Limited, steps into the spotlight with plans to initiate power generation. The company aims to produce a substantial 720 megawatts of electricity, providing a glimmer of hope amid the financial mismanagement in the solar power venture.

Against a backdrop of energy shortages and Zesa’s implementation of load shedding due to low generation capacity, Jinan-Almid’s venture appears to offer a timely and essential solution to the pressing power needs of the nation. The ferrochrome producer, operational in Zimbabwe since 2012, maintains an 85 percent capacity utilization, demonstrating resilience in a sector grappling with global ferrochrome price fluctuations.

Midlands Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, expressed enthusiasm about Jinan’s entry into power generation during a recent plant tour. He stated, “In April 2024, the company intends to commence power generation, with a target of producing at least 720 megawatts of electricity,” providing a stark contrast to the financial setbacks witnessed in the Gwanda project.

Minister Ncube affirmed the government’s full support for Jinan-Almid’s initiative, recognizing the pivotal role reliable and affordable power plays in fostering industrial growth and national development. He commended the company’s resilience and commitment to Zimbabwe, contrasting it with the financial challenges haunting the Gwanda solar power venture.

“The company has remained an economic confidence-building reference point in the Second Republic’s efforts aimed at attracting foreign direct investment in mining and manufacturing as the company’s operations confirm that Zimbabwe is indeed open for business,” Minister Ncube stated, emphasizing the importance of responsible and impactful investments in the country.

Established through close collaboration between Zimbabwe and China in 2012, Jinan-Almid currently employs 1,120 workers. The company’s move into power generation offers a contrasting narrative to the financial mismanagement witnessed in the Gwanda solar power project, providing hope for improved industrial operations and economic development.

Two Armed Robbers Gunned Down

TWO suspected armed robbers have been killed, while four were injured in a shootout with police officers who were trying to arrest them in Harare this Tuesday.

Jabulani Ngobeni aged 45 and Godknows Machingura (44) died on Tuesday during the incident in Arcadia.

Ngobeni and Machingura were part of an armed six-men gang who are believed to have travelled from South Africa to commit a robbery in Kwekwe.

The other members of the gang include three South African nationals – Ndiafhi Makhado, Andrew Masubelele and Emmanuel Makamo – as well as a Zimbabwean, Paul Zhou.

ZRP National spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident in a statement, saying detectives from CID Homicide, Harare received information that the suspects were booked at a guest house along Mauritius Road, Arcadia, Harare.

Acting on information detectives raided the guest house resulting in the suspects bolting out of the house with one Ngobeni firing shots towards the detectives and a shoot-out ensued, resulting in him being shot on the hip.

This led to the arrest of Ngobeni, Makhado, Masubelele, Zhou and Makamo with the police recovering a pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi also confirmed that Ngobeni, unfortunately, died on admission at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, while Machingura, who was not around during the initial shootout, also died following yet another gunfire exchange after he was lured to Morgan High School, Arcadia, Harare.

It also emerged that the gang had hatched a plan to commit robbery along Birmingham Road, Kwekwe with Machingura said to be in Shamva where he was monitoring the movement of their target.

The latest incident comes after another gang of nine suspected armed robbers was shot and arrested on allegations of committing a spate of armed robbery cases in and around Harare on the 14th of this month.

Chamisa Loyalist Elected Harare Mayor

By-The Nelson Chamisa-led CCC senior member, Jacob Mafume, has bounced back as Harare’s mayor.

Mafume defeated Elvis Ruzani by a vote of 22 to 15.

Mafume was mayor and was replaced by Ian Makone following the harmonised 23-24 August 2023 elections.

The post of mayor became vacant when Lovejoy Chitengu, who was elected as councillor for Ward 36 in the August 2023 general elections, was recalled by Tshabangu.

Chitengu had replaced Ian Makone, who was also recalled in November.

Chitengu was spared from that recall due to a spelling error in his name, but Tshabangu ordered another recall.

Tshabangu argues that the recalls were necessary because party leader Nelson Chamisa imposed the targeted CCC representatives during the party’s controversial candidate selection process.

Some political observers believe that Chamisa used a different candidate selection process to eliminate opponents and favour loyalists.

Others see the recalls as an attempt by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to weaken the opposition.

Mafume’s return as mayor marks a significant shift in Harare’s leadership.

However, the frequent changes in mayors and the internal conflicts within the CCC raise concerns about stability and effective governance.

Mafume is Harare’s fourth mayor in just four months.

The survey report said that one serving of alcohol was classified as 0.0177 fluid litres of alcohol. It said:

This corresponds with a 0.354 litre can/bottle of beer, one 0.148 litre glass of wine, or one 0.044 litre shot of liquor.

All top three countries, according to the report, do not have alcohol illegality but drinking is allowed to people above the age of 18.

According to Delta Beverages, Zimbabweans drank record amounts of lager beer in 2022.

Factors that contribute to varying levels of alcohol consumption across different countries include cultural and social norms toward alcohol, the availability and accessibility of alcohol, income levels and economic stability, social factors, such as peer pressure, cultural celebrations, and social expectations, as well as religious beliefs and practices.

Gavin Hunt Speaks On Dzvukamanja Absence

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has explained why Terrence Dzvukamanja was not part of the squad that won 2-1 against Moroka Swallows.

Dzvukamanja had featured in all of SuperSport’s league games this season.

According to KickOff.com, Hunt revealed that the Zimbabwean striker had suffered a knock earlier in the week during their CAF Confederations Cup clash against Al Hilal Benghazi.

“Terrence got a hell of a knock in Liberia,” Hunt said.

“It was a big blow because he gives me so many options, he can play wide as well for us you know?

Arubi Sees Red

The Unfair Criticism Faced by Judges: A Call for Justice and Respect

By Dr. Masimba Mavaza | The opposition press has consistently attacked judges and the courts, eroding public trust in our judicial system. This poses a threat to our democratic foundations, as the courts are essential to upholding the Constitution and laws. Judicial decision-making should not be influenced by fear of personal attacks, and public officials must respect and enforce court decisions to maintain the separation of powers.

Justice Webster Chinamhora in hospital in SA

Retired Judge Webster Chinamhora has become a victim of baseless accusations and attacks on his judicial decisions.

Justice Chinamhora in Hospital going through life saving procedures…
A South African Doctor Dr Coetzee with his patient Rtd Judge Chinamhora.

The presumption of innocence until proven guilty is selectively applied, tarnishing not only his reputation but also the entire bench. Judges and magistrates play crucial roles in our representative democracy, yet their work often goes unrecognized and misunderstood.

Dr Masimba Mavaza

During the recent War of Conquest, judges faced unprecedented criticism, and the media, along with respected lawyers, launched attacks through open letters. The Chief Justice and the Judicial Service Commission have been slow to defend judges, leaving them vulnerable to unjust assaults. It is crucial to emphasize the integrity and impartiality of judges, defending the valuable work they contribute to society.

Judge Chinamhora resigned, facing ongoing attacks even after leaving the bench. Unfounded complaints about appealed cases seem aimed at intimidating future judges. Public scrutiny of judges is acceptable but should be fair and constructive, not driven by personal or political interests.

Judges, as public officers, lack a platform to respond to attacks, making it imperative for the media to collaborate with the judiciary to explain their work to the public. Unsubstantiated remarks against judges highlight the need for a more proactive response from the Chief Justice and the Judicial Service Commission.

The distinction between legitimate criticism and abuse of judges is crucial. The JSC’s silence when judges face relentless attacks is constitutionally wrong. Judges’ decisions should not be challenged in the press; instead, individuals dissatisfied with judgments should utilize the appeals process.

In conclusion, the judiciary must be protected, and judges deserve respect for their vital role in upholding justice. Unfair criticism and attacks only undermine the integrity of the judicial system. If dissatisfied with a judgment, the proper recourse is through legal channels, not unwarranted public condemnation.

Security guard hauled to court for assisting robbers

A security guard who made headlines last week for allegedly helping a gang that stole US$238 000 from the premises he was guarding, was back in court yesterday facing fresh charges of conspiring to commit robbery.

Owen Muteeri (28) was remanded in custody pending his bail ruling today by Harare regional magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei.

Prosecuting, Mr Anesu Chirenje alleged that Muteeri conspired with his accomplices, who are still at large, to rob Online Logistics.

Muteeri’s accomplices were armed with unidentified pistols and manhandled two security guards, before tying them with shoelaces and a rope from one of the security guard’s hat.

They then went on to remove burglar bars from the reception office and entered the block where they broke into the offices of the accountant and directors’ and ransacked them.

The gang broke into another workshop where they stole a CCTV DVR and a Samsung M33 cellphone belonging to one of the security guards.

They then proceeded to the next yard where Muteeri is a security guard and they stole US$238 000 after using grinders to force open the safe where the cash was being kept.

When the gang executed the robbery, they told the guards that their intention was to rob Online Logistics, and Muteeri was given US$5 000 as his share. On arrest he helped police recover US$2 700. Muteeri has already been granted bail on his first charge of unlawful entry.

Long winding queues at Byo civil registry

Long winding queues have resurfaced at the Civil Registry offices in Bulawayo as scores of people continue to flood the facility to apply for passports and other national identity documents.

The sudden increase in the number of people streaming to the Civil Registry could probably be attributed to the hike in passport fees in January coupled with the festive season when most people would be planning on travelling out of the country for a holiday.

The new passport application fee was recently announced in the 2024 national budget proposals by the Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Professor Mthuli Ncube.

Following the sudden rush for passports, the Civil Registry Department extended the working hours of all its e-passport offices across the country. When Bulawayo Bureau visited the Civil Registry offices in Bulawayo yesterday, there was a hive of activity with long queues which are synonymous with the festive season.

Usually during this time of the year, hordes of people, among them diasporans, swarm the Civil Registry offices across the country to apply for travel documents.

In interviews, some applicants said they had queued for more than 10 hours to apply for a passport while others said they were forced to sleep outside the building to beat the queues.

“I have been coming here for the past two days. I am trying to beat the congestion as well as the increase in fees. I am trying to save the little that I have so that I enjoy Christmas with my family and possibly get an opportunity to travel abroad” said Mr Pride Dube.

Some people alleged that Civil Registry staff were prioritising those applying for emergency passports and deliberately ignoring ordinary passport applicants.

“The staff are on a go-slow and we have to wait for long hours. We are in the wet season now and you can imagine waking up early and getting soaked while standing in the queue,” said Mr Leeroy Khumalo with a long face.

Another applicant, Ms Sithabisiwe Ngwenya said: “This is a tiresome process and although we are aware that they have extended the working hours, their pace is slow. What is the point of extending when they are going to just serve a few people?”

Mr Butholezwe Sibindi who is based in South Africa, said he had been queuing since Friday last week.

“I came from South Africa with the hope that things had improved but alas it is still the same story. This is disappointing because I have been stuck in these long queues for days instead of spending quality time with my family,” he said.

In a statement, the Civil Registry Department said it has extended working hours for all its offices across the country’s 10 provinces.

“The Civil Registry Department wishes to advise its valuable clients that it has extended its working hours in the passport section with immediate effect. The passport offices will be open Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm during weekdays and from 8am to 3pm on Saturdays,” read the statement.

The department said the extension of working hours is in response to an increase in the number of clients visiting their passport offices.

“The festive season is the busiest period for the department. With industry and schools closed, and returning citizens from the diaspora taking advantage of their visit to have their documents processed, the department witnesses an influx of clients visiting its passport offices,” read the statement.

The department said the recent announcement by the Government to increase passport fees with effect from January has also contributed to clients rushing to apply for passports before the deadline.

“In this regard, the department is extending its operating hours to facilitate efficient e-passport services in response to the high demand.”

E-passports are issued in Harare, Bulawayo, Chinhoyi, Gwanda, Gweru, Lupane, Marondera, Beitbridge, Chipinge, Chitungwiza, Hwange, Mazowe, Mwenezi and Zvishavane civil registry offices.

Passport applicants are supposed to bring their original birth certificates, national identity documents, and marriage certificates.

The Civil Registry Department charges US$120 for ordinary passports which takes seven working days to be out while an emergency or express passports costs US$220 and comes out within 48 hours.

The Registrar General Mr Henry Machiri said during the festive season, the numbers swell with most of the applicants being diasporans and school children.

“The festive season is our busiest in terms of passport applications, and most of our citizens who are in the diaspora want to apply for documents. Schools have closed and so we are expecting all these people to be coming now since they need to be there physically for biometrics,” he said.

“So, the number will increase since most people want to beat the deadline to avoid paying more money. In the proposed national budget, the fees for passports will increase in the coming month and some people want to beat the deadline and submit their applications now.”

Mr Machiri urged people whose passports are ready to visit their offices and collect the documents.

The e-passport scheme was launched by President Mnangagwa in December last year after the Government entered into a partnership with a Lithuanian company, Garsu Pasaulis, on a build, operate, and transfer (BOT) basis to produce new passports that meet modern international standards and allow Zimbabweans to travel without additional complications.

Before the opening of the facility in Bulawayo, e-passports were obtained in Harare only.

The implementation of the e-passport project resonates with the National Development Strategy One (NDS1) objective of modernising the economy through the use of ICTs and digital technology, as the country rallies towards the attainment of Vision 2030. The Herald

Maxwell Usayi (61), Goliath Taodzera (52) and Christopher Mukawu (47) were remanded in custody to tomorrow for bail application.

The State opposed bail citing overwhelming evidence against the trio.

State prosecutor Lancelot Mutsokoti alleged that sometime in October this year, the trio hatched a plan to defraud CABS bank by withdrawing money from an account which was dormant.

The trio is alleged to have manufactured a counterfeit metal driver’s licence with number 28918AH and Victor Dube’s identification number but having Usayi’s face.

It is alleged that on October 25, the suspects went to CABS Avondale branch where they withdrew US$1 000 from Victor Dube’s account which had US$100.

They also withdrew ZWL$2 829 000 from the same account and a further ZWL$479 000.

Mutsokoti told the court that the bank teller became suspicious that the drivers’ licence they tendered was fake.

The teller alerted Dube who made a police report leading to arrest of the trio. NewsDay

Gvt mulls corruption module in schools curriculum

By A Correspondent- Government has set in motion plans to incorporate dedicated learning areas on corruption, ethics and integrity into the national school curriculum under an initiative aimed at equipping learners with the knowledge and values necessary to combat corruption and build a more ethical society.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education have since embarked on a nationwide stakeholder consultation programme to develop a framework for the rollout of the initiative.

Prosecutor-General Justice Loyce Matanda-Moyo made the revelations recently while addressing delegates at the 10th session of the conference of State parties to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) in Georgia, the United States.

UNCAC is a legally binding international treaty adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003 that addresses all aspects of corruption — including prevention, criminalisation and international cooperation.

Zimbabwe signed the convention in February 2004 and ratified it in March 2007.

“As a State party to these conventions and protocols, Zimbabwe affirms that corruption is a serious problem that needs to be tackled and commits itself to fight the scourge.

“Zimbabwe has, therefore, undertaken to put in place measures and mechanisms that eliminate corruption.

“ZACC, in partnership with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, has commenced nationwide consultations with the intention to introduce a curriculum on corruption, ethics and integrity in schools and universities starting from early childhood learning,” she said.

In countries where such learning areas have been introduced, primary school learners engage in interactive activities and are exposed to stories designed to cultivate an understanding of honesty, fairness and responsible citizenship.

As learners progress to secondary school, they delve deeper into the complex realities of corruption, analysing its causes, consequences and potential solutions through discussion, critical thinking exercises and real-world case studies.

As part of measures to fight graft, she said, Government instituted comprehensive legislative reforms, including enacting laws that engender transparency.

She cited the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act of 2018; the Public Entities Corporate Governance Act of 2019; and the Companies and Other Business Entities Act of 2019 as some of the pieces of legislation put in place to enhance the fight against corruption.

“The Government conferred powers of arrest to ZACC officers through an amendment to the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act,” she added.

“Zimbabwe launched the National Anti-Corruption Strategy for 2020-2024, which encompasses a multi-stakeholder approach in the fight against corruption.”

The strategy, said Justice Matanda-Moyo, has provided an inclusive platform for Government, civil society organisations, law-enforcement agencies and the private sector to collaborate in the fight against graft.

She added: “Zimbabwe introduced the National Development Strategy 1 2021-2025, which promotes production and productivity through implementation of policies for ease of doing business, strengthening of property rights and combating corruption, among other issues.

“Government’s support for anti-corruption efforts has significantly increased.

“The country has established specialised courts at the Magistrates and High Courts of Zimbabwe.

“The conviction rate of corruption cases has increased to 72 percent.

“As a corruption prevention measure, ZACC facilitated the establishment of integrity committees within public sector institutions.

“This strategy revolves around building strong institutions that can detect and put measures to fight corruption within their spheres of control.”

To date, over 100 institutions — including local authorities, independent commissions, State enterprises and universities — have established integrity committees, she said.

Next year, she added, the concept will be cascaded to all ministries.

Justice Matanda-Moyo was leading a delegation comprising representatives from the Asset Forfeiture Unit, the police and the National Prosecuting Authority and the Ministries of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, and Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Sunday Mail

Fresh details on CCC recalls revealed

Details of how the dramatic and far-reaching recalls of main opposition CCC MPs, senators and councillors were plotted and their reason have emerged.

The plot was started through consultations soon after the August general elections among those CCC activists who are now considered renegades by party leader Nelson Chamisa and his allies.

Their main grievance was what they felt and described as imposition of candidates on the party candidates list prior to the elections during CCC’s unique primaries, which the party termed a consensus-based nomination process.

Following nomination, there was a vetting process through which the recalls activists claim candidates were imposed.

In order to execute the recalls, a mechanism was needed to drive the process which required a strategy and tactical approach to work in an environment where the ruling Zanu PF — which wanted a two-thirds parliamentary majority — had failed to secure it.

Taking advantage of the CCC’s lack of traditional party organisational structure, national structures, office-bearers, pecking order, offices, bank accounts and other relevant administrative services, the disgruntled activists formed their own structure: Interim Steering Committee.

The committee has Dingilizwe Tshuma, former legislator for Entumbane-Njube constituency in Bulawayo as chair; Albert Mhlanga (former Pumula MP and deputy); Sengezo Tshabangu (secretary-general); Khaliphani Phugeni (information); Sikhululekile Moyo (interim chairperson for women); Nomvula Mguni (ex-proportional representation MP), Mbuso Siso (treasurer) and Benoni Ncube (youth).

This is the self-imposed CCC structure that implemented the recalls.

The recalls were later hijacked by other disgruntled CCC officials, Zanu PF and state security agents.

Siso blames CCC senior official Tendai Biti and his allies like Jacob Mafume for “hijacking the process and coming up with the recalls in Harare”.

He says his group has no intention to remove party leader Nelson Chamisa, but to correct “many wrongs” within the movement.

Siso adds recalls have ended and were never intended to trigger a sweeping wave of removals of legitimately elected people’s representatives, but to boot out imposed MPs, senators and councillors who don’t come from local communities, hence do not represent the legitimate interests of the people.

He says the group behind the recalls is not working in collaboration with Zanu PF because “this is an internal matter” and the “ruling party is a national problem for all of us”.

The underlying motivation of the recalls, Siso says, was to deal internal impositions of candidates in Bulawayo, but the plan has now been hijacked by some Harare political actors, including those loyal to Biti.

Biti has denied association with Tshabangu and the recalls. Siso says all recalls in Harare were done by activists loyal to Biti and not by Tshabangu.

Sources say some Zanu PF elements have also joined the fray.

In a wide-ranging interview, Siso says: “The plan from the beginning was to recall imposed MPs and other representatives who do not originally come from Bulawayo communities. Local people, those who come from particular localities concerned, should represent local communities. It doesn’t matter whether it’s in Bulawayo, Harare, Masvingo, Mutare, Gweru, Kwekwe or Chinhoyi. The principle is that local politics requires local people to lead because they know local issues, the people’s history, grievances, interests, their problems and potential solutions,” he says.

“When you bring people from elsewhere who don’t know the local history, culture and issues, they can’t be useful representatives of the people. Local politics is about local issues in a national context.”

Siso adds: “That’s our motivation, but the process has been hijacked in Harare by Biti’s people. I have heard people say Zanu PF also hijacked the process, but i can’t speak for them. What I know is Biti and Mafume hijacked the process in Harare. It’s no longer what we intended at the start, but there are internal CCC issues which we still need to resolve. We will keep pushing for those issues to be addressed. We have told Chamisa about them before repeatedly, but they were not dealt with. We have no intention of removing Chamisa at all, but we want to help him to stamp out the problem of impositions. We are not working with Zanu PF, but if others are now doing that they are doing it in their own individual capacities, not as part of our interim steering committee. We want a strong opposition to fight for change, not a party of friends and their supporters with imposed candidates.” The NewsHawks

Sticky fingered Mukuru employee hauled to court

A former Mukuru employee, Tinotenda Zephania Gunde, faces charges of theft of US$19,536 and R39,430, and Samsung cellphones from a Mukuru branch in Filabusi.

Gunde, who had left his position the previous week, allegedly collaborated with three others in the crime.

The theft was discovered on December 14, 2023 when an employee of Talen Vision, where the Mukuru outlet is located, arrived at the shop to find the back door open and the door leading to Mukuru’s safe room open.

The shop employee then alert the manager at Mukuru, who discovered that the safe had been opened and money stolen, with only US$2000 remaining.

The theft was reported to police and investigations led to Gunde’s arrest.

Gunde voluntarily led the police to DDF Training Centre camp in Gwanda, where he had stashed the money and only US$500 and R1 600 was recovered as well as a Samsung galaxy A13 cellphone.

He appeared at the Filabusi Magistrate Court before Sukoluhle Belinda Nunu on December 16, 2023 where he sought to apply for bail but his application was dismissed and he was remanded in custody to December 29, 2023 for a possible trial in Filabusi.

In the state’s case, the prosecutor, Naledi Muleya said Gunde unlawfully entered the premises and stole cash and other valuables.

“On the 13th day of December 2023 and at Talenvision shop Filabusi, Tinotenda Zephania Gunde unlawfully, intentionally and without permission from Talen Vision shop represented by Silani Tshuma, the lawful occupier of the premises concerned or without other lawful authority, entered into Talen Vision shop by breaking a burglar bar to gain entry , contrary to the provisions of the said Act,” she said.

Muleya said Gunde took advantage of the absence of people at the shop premises because the complainant had knocked off and secured the premises using a burglar bar and padlocks.

“On the 13th of December at around 17:00 hours Nkosana Sibanda a Mukuru Send Money Home Teller knocked off duty and balanced cash amounting to US$1 8586 and R3 9430 which he secured in a safe as well as three cellphones, a Samsung Galaxy A13, Samsung Galaxy A02 as well as a Lenovo M10 tablet. The cash was in US$100, US$20, US$10, US$5 and US$1 notes denominations,” she said

“On the same day and during night the accused took advantage of the knowledge of the premises as well as the knowledge of the secret codes used to open the safe and proceeded to Talen Vision shop as outlined in count one and gained entry,”said Muleya.

“Upon gaining entry the accused went straight to the victim’s safe and broke the door and entered ,”Muleya said.

“Accused opened the safe using the secret code and took cash amounting to $1 8586 and R3 9430 and three cellphones. On 14 December 2023, the victim, an employee of Talen Vision arrived at the shop to commence work and found the back door as well as a complaint’s safe room door open, she called the complainant who were to check and discovered that their safe had been opened upon exiting the scene. The recovered cash amounted to $2000.00,” said Muleya. CITE

Mthwakazi rally postponed

A Mthwakazi Republic Party (MRP) Umkhombandlela rally, set for Thursday at Stanley Square Hall in Bulawayo has been postponed by police who claimed they were ordered to postpone all political gatherings until after Christmas for security reasons.

MRP officials claimed the police alleged that the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party had also threatened to protest on the same day.

Initially, MRP was granted permission to hold their rally when they notified the authorities three weeks ago but police later wrote to party officials stating the rally had to be postponed to a later date due to “perceived security threats.”

“Reference is being given to our consultations [meetings) with Thompson NDLOVU the MRP Organising Secretary for Bulawayo Province and Thembisa MPOFU. The MRP National Chairman, on 18 and 19 December 2023 in terms of section 8(3) of the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA) pertaining to the above subject matter,” read the letter from Chief Superintendent N Ushe, Officer Commanding Bulawayo West District.

“The Police and your party representatives mentioned above mutually agreed that the intended meeting which was scheduled for 21 December 2023 from 0900 – 1700 hours be postponed to a later date due to the perceived security threats.”

After receiving this letter, MRP officials sought an audience with the police who explained the reason behind the new order.

The rally will now be held on January 13, next year.

According to an MRP official, the Umkhombandlela rally served as a platform for members to chart the party’s future course.

“We wanted to unpack the revolutionary stances that we will take in the coming year. This police act has destroyed our plans and affected the logistics of our members who had already travelled in anticipation. Some members were coming from South Africa, Botswana and other faraway places locally,” the official said. CITE

Rail- road level crossing accidents claim 16 in 2023

Sixteen people have died this year in rail-road level crossing accidents and suspected cases of suicide, according to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ).

People or vehicles crossing the tracks must always assume that a train is moving even if they cannot see or hear it, according to the NRZ.

“People put on earphones when walking on the tracks and there is a general perception that there are no trains but trains are moving. This is the reason why we are seeing these accidents,” said NRZ spokesperson, Andrew Kunambura.

Kunambura narrated that on December 3, 2023, a 25-year-old man was seriously injured after he was hit by a train while walking along the railway line at Mpopoma Transit Yard in Bulawayo.

“The man was putting on earphones and did not hear the approaching train. He sustained a broken hand and head injuries,” he said.

On December 11, 2022, a woman was hit and killed by a locomotive in a case of suspected suicide in Gweru.

“The incident occurred at the Amtec level crossing and police from Gweru Central Police Station attended the scene,” said the NRZ spokesperson.

Kunambura also narrated a “sad story” that took place on December 13, 2023, where a young man was run over by a train in Odzi and dragged for 20 metres.

“It is suspected he was hit by a passing train. His body was left on the track and was discovered when another train crew passing through the area was advised of a dead person on the tracks and stopped. His body was taken to the police,” he said.

Another incident occurred in Harare on the same day, said the NRZ spokesperson who said a commuter omnibus carrying passengers was hit by a locomotive at the Paisley Road level crossing after the driver failed to give way to the approaching train.

“The computer omnibus driver failed to observe the rules and raced against the locomotive to get to the crossing point resulting in the vehicle being hit. Fortunately, there were no fatalities. The driver and all his passengers fled from the scene on foot. As NRZ, we keep encouraging members of the public and motorists to exercise extreme caution on and around the railway line to avoid loss of life and injuries,” Kunambura said.

Kunambura lamented that NRZ had been recording such incidents almost every week since December and that was unsustainable.

“We will release the accurate figures of people that we have lost this year at crossing points but offhand I can say 16 people this year have died before we even end the year. This is an unsustainably high number,” he said.

The NRZ spokesperson added that in one incident, a couple was killed having sexual intercourse on the tracks .

“One day we had an unfortunate incident where a couple thought it was a wise decision to have a romantic night on the tracks. So you can see there is perception no trains are moving but as NRZ, we say since the first train arrived in this country in 1897, every day since then, a train has been moving,” Kunambura highlighted.

He also urged the media to raise awareness to “secure lives and make sure, we don’t continue losing lives under these circumstances.”

“When people have been hit by a train, the damage there is extensive,” noted the NRZ spokesperson.

Kunambura stated the NRZ was expanding its operations and that there would be more train activity in the country next year, so both people and vehicles needed to be cautious when crossing the railway.

“Let us be aware and alert whenever moving along the railway lines or at crossing points or any point on the tracks. Once on the line, whether you can see, hear or can’t see or hear the train, assume that there is a train. That’s our motto always – Assume there is a train coming and remove your earphones when crossing the tracks,” appealed the NRZ spokesperson. CITE

Teachers up in arms with ZEC over payments

Teachers are up in arms with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) over outstanding payments after the electoral body engaged them as election officers for the disputed August polls.

According to unions representing teachers, educators who participated in various election-related duties are being sent from one office to the next when they inquire about payment.

This is not the first time Zec has clashed with teachers over non-payment for election-related work.

Educators Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general, Tapedza Zhou, threatened court action against the electoral body over the matter.

“Last time, we warned Zec against engaging teachers without contracts as this opened doors to abuse,” Zhou said.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe leader, Obert Masaraure, accused Zec of taking teachers for granted.

“Zec has been contacted by individual teachers and the unions with regards to the payment but the electoral body has been pledging but without fulfilling the promise.”

Zec deputy chairperson, Rodney Kiwa, referred to the chief elections officer Utloile Silaigwana when contacted for comment.

He added: “I would advise the unions to approach Mr Silaigwana with the necessary documents which show that they were indeed employed and at which station.”

Efforts to obtain a comment from Silaigwana were fruitless.

He also did not respond to WhatsApp messages sent to him.

Zimbabwe National Teachers Union chief executive, Manuel Nyawo, however, blasted Zec for dishonesty.

“Such dishonest behaviour is uncalled for because it puts the name of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Zanu PF into disrepute because Zec acted on the instructions of the Zanu PF government that was and is still in power,” Nyawo said.

“It’s a miscarriage of justice to see teachers being abused to this extent considering that they are struggling to survive with the little earnings they are getting in the form of salaries.” NewsDay

Byo city council to kill stray dogs

By A Correspondent- Bulawayo City Council is mulling a tie-up order exercise where stray dogs will be shot as a means of controlling the population of dogs in the city.

The city’s director of health services Dr Edwin Mzingwane said: “Council from time to time conducts a tie-up order where we join other stakeholders in ensuring that dogs are within designated places at all times. During this time we shoot any stray dogs as a means of controlling the breeding of dogs and reducing the number of unregistered dogs which put residents at risk.”

“Unknown dogs are unvaccinated and can easily spread rabies to other dogs or humans which may put us in a tight situation as we know that rabies is incurable. Dogs are also a menace they tamper with refuse bins and create a mess that makes the city dirty. We also have a worrying trend where dogs are frequenting Mpilo Central Hospital and it’s unacceptable.” The Chronicle

Gvt, local authorities blamed for cholera

Human rights lawyers say government and local authorities must be held accountable for cholera deaths as the water-borne disease spreads across the country claiming lives.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) accused authorities of “dereliction of duty” in the handling of the cholera outbreak.

Zimbabwe is grappling with a third cholera outbreak this year, with cases having been confirmed in all the 10 provinces.

According to the Health and Child Care ministry, Zimbabwe has recorded 200 cholera-related deaths and 130 hospitalisations since February 2023 when the outbreak first surfaced.

“The ongoing cholera outbreak is a chilling reminder of the devastating consequences of failing to provide necessities to the people. The government must act swiftly and effectively to protect lives and prevent further tragedy,” the ZLHR said.

The rights lawyers expressed outrage over preventable deaths from a “medieval disease” in Zimbabwe.

“It is a staggering indictment on both local and central governments that Zimbabwe is still haunted by a medieval disease like cholera,” the lawyers said.

They said officials should be held accountable for their “failure to invest in and adequately manage basic water, sanitation infrastructure and public health facilities”.

ZLHR criticised the sluggish response to the crisis, citing lack of access to clean water, sanitation and proper medical care in affected communities.

They warned that “this unacceptable failure of leadership” constituted a violation of the government’s constitutional obligations and international human rights commitments.

“The failure by central and local governments to swiftly respond to the cholera epidemic through providing basic health services, medical treatment and services, clean running water and sanitary facilities to people, is an unacceptable failure of leadership and represents a clear failure by local authorities and government to uphold their constitutional obligations as provided in the Constitution and other regional and international instruments,” ZLHR said.

The rights lawyers urged the government to significantly increase budgetary allocations for water, sanitation and hygiene.

“To arrest the cholera epidemic and prevent recurrent outbreaks of the primitive disease, ZLHR implores local and central governments to seriously embrace their social and economic rights, obligations provided in the Constitution and guarantee progressive realisation of the right to healthcare, the right to safe, clean and potable water for everyone and the right to a clean environment that is not harmful to people’s health or their well-being,” the organisation said.

As cholera spreads, across the country, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has intervened by setting up cholera treatment centres to save lives.

“This move aims to improve access to critical care and prevent further deaths and spread of the disease in vulnerable communities,” WHO said.

The global health agency said upgrading of the cholera treatment centres would lead to increased bed capacity through expanding the facilities to accommodate a larger number of cholera patients.

Health and Child Care minister Douglas Mombeshora said there was a need to improve community engagement to end the scourge.

“We recently received equipment from WHO and we need to identify places where these are needed the most so that we distribute them and help fight the outbreak,” he said.

WHO representative to Zimbabwe, Jean-Marie Dangou added: “These upgrades are crucial to ensure timely and effective care for cholera patients in rural areas. By expanding treatment capacity, improving hygiene and equipping healthcare workers, we can save lives and contain the outbreak.”

The water-borne disease, which spreads through drinking water or eating food contaminated with the cholera bacterium and causes severe diarrhoea and vomiting, is now endemic in the country.

Government has responded by banning gatherings in cholera hotspots as it seeks to arrest the spread of the water-borne disease. NewsDay
