Another Weekend Of Tussling For Power In Zanu PF

ZANU PF will hold primary election re-runs for local authorities in at least 27 wards tomorrow after a number of incidents in the initial polls.

The re-runs will complete the party’s selection of candidates for the harmonised elections due in the next few months, after it concluded the primaries for parliamentary representatives recently.

In Harare Metropolitan, reruns will take place in Chitungwiza’s Ward 2 in Zengeza West and Ward 28 in Glen Norah of Harare after the contesting candidates pulled same number of votes.

In Mashonaland Central, Ward 2,3,4,5 and 6 in Mazowe North were affected by delimitation, and reruns are needed in Ward 24 in Mazowe, and Ward 24 in Mount Darwin and Ward 10 in Bindura.

In Mashonaland East, reruns will also be held in four wards, which are Ward 14 Murewa, Ward 7 in Mutoko, Ward 24 Seke and Ward 19 Goromonzi.

In Mashonaland West, reruns will be in three wards, Ward 3 Chakari, Ward 6 Mhondoro Ngezi and Ward 4 Kadoma Central.

Two wards were affected in Matabeleland South province, Ward 8 and 10 in Bulilima. The winners have pending court cases and they voluntarily withdrew.

In Matabeleland North, reruns will be held in Hwange Ward 2 and 4, Victoria Falls Ward 5, and Victoria Falls wards 2,7 and 8.

Re-runs will also be held in Ward 13, Umguza.

Meanwhile, there are no cases of local authority reruns in Masvingo, Bulawayo, Midlands and Manicaland provinces

The ruling party has announced the final list of the candidates for Parliament after endorsement by the Politburo.

The provinces will administer the reruns primary elections for the local authorities and they will submit the results to the National Command Centre.

Briefing the media in Harare yesterday, Zanu PF National Political Commissar Cde Mike Bimha confirmed that in some cases, some wards were affected by change of boundaries during the delimitation and no candidates were fielded.

In some cases, there was no absolute winner due to equal numbers of votes received by candidates.

In other cases, uncontested winners had pending court cases and the candidates had withdrawn.

“The reruns were as a result of confusion arising from delimitation and the new boundaries. Candidates did not get enough time to familiarise themselves with the new boundaries. After all these elections are over, there is need to put a mechanism of making sure that people are aware of the new boundaries,” emphasised Cde Bimha.

Preparations he said are going on well.

“The party officials who are going to administer the elections are now ready to go. We expect the elections to take place this coming Saturday with results coming in on Sunday. We will be having our national command here at the party headquarters,” echoed Cde Bimha.

The primary elections, he said were more of a mobilisation exercise because it kept everyone very much involved, with every party member very active.

“Our party members must exercise their right. They must also have an understanding of what these candidates stand for.

“In terms of democracy, Zanu PF has now come of age to make the electorate have to get information on the candidates who want to represent them,” he said.

He commended the participation of young people in the primary elections.

Some of the national Youth League members who sailed through in the primary elections are Cde Machakaire, his deputy Cde John Paradza, Cdes Tsungai Makumbe, Naledi Maunganidze, Taurai Kandishaya, Emmerson Raradza and Isaac Tasikani among others. Cde Ngonidzashe Mudekunye, who won against incumbent Member of Parliament Cde Joseph Chinotimba in Buhera South, Cde Sam Matema sailed through in Buhera Central Constituency, Dr Benjamin Ganyiwa, Gutu East and Buhera North constituency Cde Phillip Guyo, Cde Tendai Mapisa won in Ward 18, Marondera West constituency.

Cde Admire Mahachi, trounced veteran politician Cde Mike Madiro in Mutare North constituency, Cde Tafadzwa Mugwadi won in Buhera West constituency while Cde Nyasha Zenda won in Harare Central.

“What was also of interest is the number of young people who are now representing Zanu PF as candidates in the next coming elections. That in itself shows that the party is growing.

“The party is there to nurture those ambitious young people who want to take positions in the party and who will be our leaders in the future,” he said.

The commissariat department acknowledges receipt of local authority primary elections results conducted by all provinces between March 25 and 26, 2023.

The party is targeting to mobilise five million votes to ensure a resounding victory in the harmonised poll.

Apostolic Sect Leader Injured While Attempting To Escape Robbers

The leader of an apostolic sect from St Mary’s on Wednesday night was injured while an accomplice died from wounds sustained when the getaway driver lost control of the Honda Fit vehicle they appeared to be trying to steal at gunpoint.

According to a local online publication, Madzibaba Levi and three accomplices approached a tuck shop along Chiwaridzo Road at a time the owner was locking up and his wife was already seated in the front passenger seat of their vehicle.

One of the gang members produced a pistol and the gang got into the car with the woman. One of them got into the driver’s seat.

On seeing the hijack process, the husband who was walking towards the car ran off.

The robbers drove off at high speed along Chaminuka Drive.

The kidnapped woman got hold of the steering wheel, forcing the gangster driver to lose control and it overturned.

The abducted woman escaped unscathed while the vehicle was damaged beyond repair.

The driver managed to open the door and escape.

Madzibaba Levi and the other two accomplices who were injured were arrested.

They are currently in custody at St Mary’s Police Station and investigations are ongoing.

Madzibaba Levi leads an apostolic sect that congregates near DDF across Hunyani River on the Chitungwiza-Machipisa highway.

He is also a physical fitness enthusiast who trains regularly at St Mary’s Gym which is situated at Huruyadzo Shopping Centre.

Eddie Cross Makes Shocking Claims That Grace Mugabe Has Over US$5 Billion Hidden In Europe

Top economist and former opposition legislator Eddie Cross has claimed that former First Lady Grace Mugabe has over US$5 billion hidden in Europe.

Speaking on a podcast, Friday Drinks, Cross said he had read an American report that alleged Grace had amassed billions of dollars from diamond and fuel deals in the country.

Grace was recently accused of smuggling diamonds and ivory out of the country without her late husband former President Robert Mugabe’s knowledge.

“The Americans know where all the money is, I have seen an American report which says how much money Grace Mugabe has got and where it is.

“US$5.3 billion and it’s in Europe and the Europeans know where it is,” revealed Cross.

Bona Mugabe’s estranged husband Simba Chikore made headlines this week after listing property worth US$58 million including 21 farms in their divorce row.

Chikore listed 21 farms in which he claims an interest and more than 25 upmarket residential properties valued at over US$50m.

The Dubai Mansion worth about US$8m was thrown into the array of properties.

Zimbabweans were seething with anger over the ridiculous amassing of wealth with most questioning the source of the wealth took to social media to express anger and frustrations over revelations.

Political pressure group Team Pachedu, said the amount of the land listed in the divorce was enough to house  1.2 million 200 square meter stands.

“Bona Mugabe owns 24717.19 Hectares of land and this is equivalent to 247.17 million square meters.

“This is enough to fit 1.2 million 200 square meter stands being dished out by ED. ED recently dished out only 265 stands. Bona alone owns 1.2 million of those,” said the group on Twitter.

Al Jazeera Regrets Not Recording Uebert Angel Call To Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa was called by his emissary Uebert Angel, unfortunately the phone call was not recorded, an Al Jazeera investigative journalist has claimed.

According to the journalist who posed as Miss Sin, secretary to fake Chinese gangster Mr. Stanely in Al Jazeera’s four-part Gold Mafia series, the call was made by Angel at a time she did not expect it and had no recording device on her.

According to Sin, Mnangagwa offered part of the Zambezi River shores for development in his conversation with Angel. He even requested a one-on-one meeting with the team to finalise the deals.

She said this while dissecting the two-year investigation on Al Jazeera’s podcast.

An initial meeting planned with Mnangagwa did not come to fruition after the journalists opted not to pay a US$200,000 ‘facilitation fee’ to Angel.

“This meeting is one of those I will never forget, one of my biggest regrets happens at this meeting. Ambassador Angel takes me away from the group, one on one and puts his finger to his lips to tell me to keep quiet, I did not have any recording devices on me because the other people on the team had them,” said Sin.

“Sometimes we would change it up a bit, who is recording and who is not.

“Angel dials who he tells me is President Emmerson Mnangagwa, so I am seated in the booth and hearing him speak to the President.

“A lot of it is in Shona but the President is talking about how we should do more than just the casino on the Victoria Falls, he says what about the Zambezi River and talks about how we should have a one-on-one meeting with him.”

Mnangagwa’s wife Auxillia was recorded advising Angel to call him regards the mode of transportation for gold which was set to be smuggled out of the country.

She said he had the final say.

Angel, who according to Zanu PF strategist Acie Lumumba has been cleared of all suspicions that arose after the documentary, was the central figure who shared details and provided names and audios to the investigative team.

He has claimed, through his lawyer Lovemore Madhuku, to have been on national duty, vetting the ‘possible investors’ before taking them to the President.

Zanu PF Dangles Title Deeds To Millions Of People Ahead Of Elections

ZANU PF is dangling title deeds to almost 1,3 million people before this year’s harmonised elections in what analysts say is a desperate campaign gimmick.

Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa told NewsDay yesterday that they want to shut the door on land barons.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa recently issued 265 deeds of grant to Epworth residents, a year after making the promise.

“We now have a system that creates title deeds. We are targeting to issue a prospective 1,3 million title deeds before elections. The houses have been built by developers and owners of the properties and they have been physically identified,” Mutsvangwa said.

“What is only left with is the regulatory framework which is the most painstaking process because we can’t make a mistake with a title deed because it is a document which can be passed from a generation to a generation and people can now apply for loans at the banks because of the title deeds.

“Issuing the title deeds to the Zimbabweans is a blow to the land barons because they are the ones who were causing confusion in the parcelling of land and causing evictions.”

Political analyst Rejoice Ngwenya cast doubt on Zanu PF delivering on the promise.

“We have seen these promises before elections,” Ngwenya said.

“However, as long as the surveying, boundaries are done and properties don’t violate environmental and other development laws, it can be done if they are genuine.”

Zanu PF has been accused of making empty promises towards elections.

Man Assaults Wife Over Prophet

By A Correspondent- A man who assaulted his wife after he found her in the company of a prophet spraying muthi at their house has appeared in court.

Nicholas Khuphe (51) appeared before Western Commonage Court magistrate Shepherd Mnjanja charged with physical abuse.

He pleaded guilty and was remanded out of custody to 9 May for sentencing.

The court heard that Khuphe from Old Magwegwe suburb came home unexpectedly and was sh0cked to find his wife Knowledge Khuphe (48) in the company of a man only identified as Bonani and was told he was a prophet.

The court heard Nicholas was surprised to find Bonani spraying muthi in the sitting room while his wife was seated on a sofa and that did not go down well with him.

It is said he fumed at his wife before he struck her with a knobkerrie all over her body leading her to sustain a fractured arm.

Knowledge reported the incident to the police leading to the arrest of her husband.

Worry Over Sikhala’s Health

By A Correspondent- Friends of Job Sikhala Trust yesterday said the conviction of Zengeza West legislator, Job Sikhala (Citizens Coalition for Change), was unfortunate because of his health condition.

Sikhala was convicted on a charge of obstructing the course of justice and fined US$600, becoming the third opposition figure to be convicted in less than a month.

He has been in pre-trial detention since June last year.

Friends of Job Sikhala Trust spokesperson Emmanuel Zellers Gumbo told NewsDay that Sikhala’s conviction was unfortunate.

“Though his health is still unstable, he still suffers from abdominal pain, his fighting spirit is still alive, his conviction to fight will never be deterred by imprisonment nor by any form of persecution,” Gumbo said.

He said attempts by the legislator to consult a doctor of his choice reportedly fell flat after he was refused the privilege.

“The last time he attempted to consult a doctor of his choice, they denied him of that,” he said.

“The conviction did not come as a surprise, we saw it coming. The conviction confirmed one thing — that this is a clear case of political persecution.

Job Sikhala was arrested for demanding justice for the callously murdered Moreblessing Ali. Where on earth will a whole magistrate mistake such for obstruction of justice?”

In a heart-wrenching letter in January this year, Sikhala revealed that his health had severely deteriorated amid fears that he could have developed cancer of the colon.

This saw his close allies petitioning President Emmerson Mnangagwa to intervene to ensure the release of the legislator on medical grounds.

Government spokespersons, however, said Mnangagwa could not intervene in respect of the separation of powers.

Sikhala faces two other separate charges.

He faces a charge of incitement to violence following the violence that occurred at the funeral of Ali.

He is charged alongside fellow legislator Godfrey Sithole and 14 other Nyatsime residents.

Sikhala faces another charge of disorderly conduct. He insists that he is a political prisoner.

“Over 10 months, I have been kept from my people and from carrying out my duties and even though I have been kept in prison confinement, I know (South Africa’s anti-apartheid stalwart) Nelson Mandela was kept in prison, but his spirit was never broken and never will be mine,” he said in his mitigation before sentencing on Wednesday.-Newsday

Four Robbers Pounce On Farm, R_ape Three Women

By A Correspondent- In a horrifying incident four armed robbers raided a farm on the outskirts of Bulawayo and robbed workers of various items including cash before allegedly rɑp!ng five women while other farm workers and their children were watching.

Two of the suspects Luckson Moyo (22) and Sibongisani Ndlovu (40) have since been arrested while the two only identified as Muzi and Mbekezeli are reportedly on the run.

The four robbers who were armed with machetes, axes, and knives raided a farm shortly after 9pm last week on Saturday.

A source at the farm who spoke to B-Metro on condition of anonymity said the four robbers first went to a compound which is situated next to the shop in the farm.

They found a couple and their children sitting around a fireplace. They ordered them to lie on the ground, and the startled family complied. The robbers then assaulted them while demanding money.

After that two of the robbers took turns to rɑpǝ the woman while her husband and children were watching,” said the source.

After that two robbers remained guarding the family while the other two went to a sports bar where they found six people who were drinking beer while seated outside the closed bar and demanded cash.

As they demanded cash they threatened to kill them but they told them that they had nothing. They then demanded keys to the bar and shop and they again told them that they don’t have them.

“That, however, did not go down well with robbers who then ordered them to lie on the ground and assaulted them. After that they rɑpǝd three other women,” said the source.

The source added: “They robbed them of their cellphones, three handbags and US$45 before they headed to another compound where they found a couple slǝǝping and woke them up.”

“They demanded cash and they were given US$45 and after that they dragged the woman behind the compound where they rɑpǝd her at knife point.”

It is reported that the robbers went to three other compounds where they ransacked the rooms looking for cash.

“They took several items including speaker boxes, cash and handbags before they fled,” said the source.

The farm owner reported the incident to the police before he rushed the victims to hospital for treatment.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and said: “We urge farmers to beef their security at their farm compounds.

“We would like to applaud members of the public for supplying police with information which led to the arrest of two robbers and we appeal for information that might lead to the whereabouts of the robbers who are still at large.”

Tuku’s Daughter Loses Custody Of Minors

By A Correspondent- Former Zimbabwe national football player, Tinashe Nengomasha’s marriage to Samantha Mtukudzi has been ruled as officially over by the High Court.

The two were involved in a nasty break-up, with the court process having been initiated by Samantha, daughter of the late musician, Oliver Mtukudzi.

Samantha had demanded custody of their two children.

She then amended her summons in 2021 and asked the court to award her custody of the couple’s Maltese dog called Alvin Jazz, which they acquired when they were still staying together.

Nengomasha challenged the divorce, but High Court judge Justice Neville WaMambo ruled that there were no chances of the two reconciling.

A full judgment is not yet available.

“Whereupon, after reading documents filed of record and hearing counsel who applies for a decree of divorce and other relief on the grounds of irretrievable breakdown under the provisions of section 5 of the Matrimonial Causes Act (Chapter 5:13), it is ordered that the divorce order dated April 20, 2023 be and is hereby amended as follows: “A decree of divorce be and is hereby granted,” the judge ruled.

Nengomasha was granted custody of the minor children.

Zanu PF Dangles Title Deeds To Over 1.3m

President Mphoko’s Son Jailed 20 Years For Rape

By A Correspondent | 44 year old Siqokoqela, the son of the late President Robert Mugabe’s successor, former vice president Phelekezela Mphoko, was given an effective 20-year sentence for raping a family member.

Siqokoqela-Mphoko

Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Elijah Singano stated that Mphoko had three times pushed himself on the little victim, threatening her with death.

Ruled the magistrate: “Rape remains an extremely serious offence and offenders must be punished. It violates and demoralises the victim. The criminal law and codification act stipulates that for an offence such as rape the courts should issue a sentence of life imprisonment or less,” Singano said.

He added: ““The accused used threats of death on the victim if she ever disclosed the matter to anyone. The complainant stayed at the accused’s house and looked up to him as a father and so he violated the trust of the complainant and the family at large.

“The court has to act in the best interest of the child. Many of the victim’s constitutional rights have been violated such as the right to privacy, good health, education, and dignity, I could go on and on. All these have long lasting effects on the minor,” he said.

“Lawfully each count of rape is equal to 10 years in prison and sentencing the accused 30 years for each count will be on the harsh side considering that it is the same victim and in a short space of time. The court is inclined to impose 20 years of imprisonment for all three counts and unfortunately, the court cannot further suspend this sentence as it will be taken for belittling this serious crime.

“The accused is therefore sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison for count one to three and two months for count four which will be served concurrently with the previous counts,” Magistrate Singano ruled.

Mphoko’s lawyer Zibusiso Ncube mitigated saying his client should be given a lesser sentence as he has a medical condition.

“The accused is aged 44 years and lives with a medical condition that needs him to be constantly visiting the doctor. He has a young family with the eldest biological daughter aged 13 followed by a boy aged 12 and his adopted daughter Sinikiwe Masiye.

“The accused has an immovable property which includes a house in Hillside suburb, Greydot communication company and five cars. When it comes to the rape charges your worship it will be unjust that the court looks at all three counts separately considering their proximity and that there are no specific dates. It is therefore our prayer that these counts be taken as one when it comes to sentencing,” he argued.

First Aid Tips For Burns

Compiled by Dr Ellane Simon

First aid should can be offered by anyone but ideally trained personnel to give first aid should offer first aid. When offering first aid always consider your personal safety first. Look out for any dangers and only act when you are confident it is safe to do so.
An unresponsive person is someone not moving or responding when you call them or when gently shaken.

Respiratory emergencies & CPR

  1. Check if breathing by tilting their head back and looking and feeling for breaths.

When a person is unresponsive, their muscles relax and their tongue can block their airway so they can no longer breathe. Tilting their head back opens the airway by pulling the tongue forward. If they are breathing, you will see their chest moving and you may hear their breath or feel it on your cheek. If breathing, move on to step two.

  1. Move them onto their side and tilt their head back. Putting them in this position with their head back helps keep their airway open. It ensures their tongue falls forward and blood and vomit drain out. It is sometimes called the “recovery position”.
  2. Call for help or an ambulance as soon as possible.
  3. If the patient needs CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), place the person on their back on a firm, flat surface and start giving chest compressions aiming for 30compressions in 1minute.
    How to do CPR
Hand position: Two hands centered on the chest
Body position: Shoulders directly over hands; elbows locked
    Depth: At least 5cm
Allow chest to return to normal position after every chest compression.

5 Give 2 rescue breaths (if equipment to do that available). Ensure each breath lasts about 1 second and makes the chest rise; allow air to exit before giving the next breath.

Gas leak, Fire & Burns

  1. Turn off gas if safe to do
  2. Evacuate the area immediately
  3. Do not switch any lights or start an open flame
  4. If there is fire use a fire extinguisher to stop the fire from spreading and ring the fire alarm alerting everyone to evacuate the building.
  5. If someone is on fire remove the person from the source of fire, drop and roll him or her over or cover him or her with a fire blanket.
  6. Cool burn under running water
  7. Protect the burn with sterile, non-adhesive bandage (DO NOT APPLY BUTTER OR OINTMENTS)
  8. Do not break blisters
  9. Call for an ambulance and send to hospital

Chemical spill

  1. Remove spoiled clothing
  2. If skin or eyes affected rinse immediately with clean running water
  3. If ingested do not induce vomiting and do not give water or mi unless told to d so by a health professional.
  4. If inhaled move the person to fresh air and give oxygen if available.
  5. After first aid is given send to hospital as soon as possible.

PSL Action Returns To Hwange

Hwange’s Colliery Stadium and Bata Stadium in Gweru have been cleared to host Premier Soccer League games.

The two venues will be used by their respective teams – Hwange and newcomers Sheasham – starting on Matchday 8 of the Castle Lager Premiership this weekend.

Both Chipangano and the Construction Boys were forced to look for alternative home grounds at the start of the season after their stadiums failed to meet the minimum standards to host league games.

Hwange used Luveve Stadium in Bulawayo, while Sheasham hosted their home games at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane.

Following extensive renovations at Bata and the Colliery, both clubs will return to their original grounds.

Meanwhile, Greenfuel and Simba Bhora will for now continue using alternative venues as their original home grounds are yet to reach minimum standards to host league games.

Greenfuel shifted from Chisumbanje and are currently using Gibbo Stadium in Triangle, while Simba Bhora, from Shamva, are hosting their games at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.- Soccer24 News

Married Bietbridge Woman Caught Pants Down In Private Lodge

By- A Beitbridge couple is now pursuing divorce after the wife was caught pants down in a local lodge by her husband.

The couple, whose altercation has become one of the week’s biggest talking points, had a beautiful white wedding and a beautiful young family.

Tinashe Kandawasvika, a clearing agent in the border town, is the man whose video, savagely assaulting his wife after finding her in a lodge, has gone viral.
H-Metro has even nicknamed him the “Butcher of Beitbridge.”
As their drama continues to unfold, we have reliably been informed that the woman’s actions could have been driven by an act of ‘‘revenge cheating’’.
Tinashe and his wife, Primrose Kandawasvika, have been together for about 10 years.
A close source said an urgent family meeting was convened at the couple’s house in Limpopo View, Beitbridge, on Monday.
The estranged couple mutually decided to pursue their divorce.
The source said this was the second time Primrose was allegedly caught cheating after her other affair was discovered in December last year.
Tinashe went on to forgive Primrose only to be tipped off by her friends on Sunday that she was meeting her lover at a lodge.
The unidentified lover, who was also brutally assaulted by Tinashe and his friend, had travelled to Beitbridge to see Primrose.
The couple married in 2013 and have three children.
They were in the process of a separation, according to our sources, after Tinashe was also accused of allegedly having an extra-marital affair.
“The situation is tense right now, both Tinashe and Primrose’s relatives were called in on Monday and they had a long meeting that lasted deep into the night.
“The couple has decided to divorce each to avoid further emotional damage,” said the source.
In the video, Tinashe pounds his wife, using fists, like he was in a boxing match.
He keeps on expressing his anger and shock as to why his wife was in a lodge with another man.
He allegedly claims he sent his wife to school, got her a job as a cashier at a company in Beitbridge and even registered some of his assets in her name.
Reaction towards Tinashe’s actions has been swift with many Zimbabweans, irked by the violence, calling for his imprisonment.
Many have concluded he is a monster and he wasn’t supposed to treat another human being like that even despite the emotional circumstances.
They feel the couple should go separate ways and their wish appears to have been granted.

Mugabe Deputy’s Son Sentenced To 20 Years

By -The son of the former Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko, Siqokoqela, has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for three counts of rape.

Siqokoqela was also slapped with a concurrent two months for contravening a court order.
Mphoko appeared before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Elijah Singano, who ruled that many of the victim’s constitutional rights were violated.
“Rape remains an extremely serious offence and offenders must be punished. It violates and demoralises the victim. The criminal law and codification act stipulates that for an offence such as rape the courts should issue a sentence of life imprisonment or less,” Singano said while delivering his ruling.
He said that the age difference between Mphoko and the victim is three times hence showing the low morality of the former.
“The accused used threats of death on the victim if she ever disclosed the matter to anyone. The complainant stayed at the accused’s house and looked up to him as a father, and so he violated the trust of the complainant and the family at large.
“The court has to act in the best interest of the child. Many of the victim’s constitutional rights have been violated such as the right to privacy, good health, education, and dignity, I could go on and on. All these have long lasting effects on the minor,” he said.
Singano agreed with the defence mitigation that all three counts should be treated as one during sentencing.
“Lawfully, each count of rape is equal to 10 years in prison and sentencing the accused 30 years for each count will be on the harsh side considering that it is the same victim and in a short space of time. The court is inclined to impose 20 years of imprisonment for all three counts, and unfortunately, the court cannot further suspend this sentence as it will be taken for belittling this serious crime.
“The accused is therefore sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison for count one to three and two months for count four which will be served concurrently with the previous counts,” Singano ruled.
In mitigation, Mphoko’s lawyer Zibusiso Ncube had argued that his client should be given a lesser sentence as he has a medical condition.
“The accused is aged 44 years and lives with a medical condition that needs him to be constantly visiting the doctor. He has a young family with the eldest biological daughter, aged 13 followed by a boy aged 12 and his adopted daughter Sinikiwe Masiye.
Prosecuting Concilia Ncube said the victim is likely to face psychological effects for all her life.
“The offence that the accused person is facing is very serious and has psychological consequences on the complainant. She will have to live with the trauma of what happened for the rest of her life. The accused also violated the complainants’ right to privacy as enshrined in the constitution,” she said.

Zanu PF Primaries Reruns Set For The Weekend…

…As leaked audio suggests fissures in Glenview north constituency

By A Correspondent| The ruling Zanu PF party has set this Saturday to conduct reruns for council seats in Glen Norah, Zengeza West and Mbare.

In a circular gleaned by this publication, the party is instructing the provinces to prepare elections for the 3 seats.

“Reference is made to our previous circular directing provinces to prepare for primary election and in some cases primary run-offs or re-runs to be conducted on the 6th of May. In this regard, you are thereby instructed that elections be held in these wards, Zengeza West(Ward 2),Glen Norah (28) and Mbare (3),”reads the circular.

The party directs that run-offs be made in the Zengeza West and Glen Norah only between the 2 candidates with a tie on the election result. The Mbare is now open for new CVs and election after the disqualification of suspected drug lord Simbarashe Chanachimwe popularly known as Dhama. He had won the election resoundingly after garnering over 2 000 votes while the candidate who came second had 300.

Meanwhile, leaked audios are suggesting deep fissures among Zanu PF supporters in Glen View North constituency.

The audio this publication is in possession of reveal a clandestine attempt by pro Martin Mambo supporters to discredit the winning Zanu PF candidate Tumelo Zamanga.
The losing candidate, Mambo despite his acceptance of the heavy defeat he suffered at the hands of the socialite Zamanga, has been holding clandestine meetings planning to cause the disqualification of his rival.

In one of the audio, Mambo reveals that he has already approached the courts and is now armed with information that can lead to Zamanga’s disqualification and subsequent arrest.

“I have information inopisa yake (intel of his dealings) which involves him and his companies that makes it easy to build a case against him, imwe yacho toita yekubikira (we will fabricate the rest).

” Already at the High Court I have made contact and I am only left with Mbare Court,” Mambo says.

A voice of one referred to as Madondo who is suspected to be a CIO working at the ZANU PF Headquarters encouraged Mambo to add more detailed stories that if President Emmerson Mnangagwa gets wind of, he will disqualify Zamanga.

“Wedzerai neimwe info yekuti Mukuru vakanzwa anokandwa panze ( add more information so that If the President hears there are high chances he will be chucked out )The man is a dead man walking, anenge apera(he will be finished),” says Madondo at a meeting which most likely took place at the Rainbow towers since a person close by could be heard saying “ Tiri pa (We are at ) Hicc” .

Another voice interjects “Tachigwinha (it’s a done deal)” only kana makoresa data (if you have falsified the allegations).

According to party insiders, Mambo who is the Harare province treasurer has been writing a number of letters and complaints seeking nullification of the poll results.

” These are acts of desperation by Mambo. Imagine he has written 10 letters and 10 petitions to the Politburo which have been ignored.

” I don’t know why he wants to subvert the will of Glen View North supporters who chose Boss Tumelo, His is quite popular there, Cde Mambo is actually holding numerous midnight meetings at his house despite having recently indirectly endorsed Boss Tumelo at a meeting we held at Girls High “said a party member who requested anonymity.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released the details of Winston Mhango’s arrest.

The ZPC Kariba midfielder was nabbed by the CID detectives at his home in Kariba on Tuesday in connection with unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs.

PSL Clears Bata Stadium

Facts About Immunization

World Immunization Week 2023

World Immunization Week 2023 – 24 to 30 April

World Immunization Week, celebrated in the last week of April, aims to highlight the collective action needed to protect people from vaccine-preventable diseases.

Under the banner of ‘The Big Catch-Up’, WHO is working with partners to support countries to get back on track to ensure more people are protected from preventable diseases.

We need to act now to catch-up the millions of children who missed out on vaccines during the pandemic, restore essential immunization coverage to at least 2019 levels and strengthen primary health care to deliver immunization.

The ultimate goal of World Immunization Week is for more children, adults – and their communities – to be protected from vaccine-preventable diseases, allowing them to live happier, healthier lives.

CCC Denounces Wiwa Conviction

CCC Namibia condemns the malicious conviction of Hon Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala!

04 May 2023

The malicious, illegal, and unconstitutional conviction of the political dynamo, Hon Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala yesterday in Harare unearthed Mr. Mnangagwa’s zeal to ban the rule of law and constitutional democracy in the motherland. ZANU PF has shown the globe its unpreparedness to hold free, fair, credible, and unfettered elections in Zimbabwe. It is ironic to convict and sentence Wiwa on obstruction of justice when the captured police had visibly followed his lead to discover Moreblessing Ali’s dismembered lifeless body in a disused well owned by the killer’s mother in Beatrice.

It is quite perturbing to witness Saro Wiwa being imprisoned for assisting the police to investigate the heinous butchery of the deceased CCC slain activist who was slaughtered like a helpless chicken by Pius Jamba Mukandi, a popular ZANU-PF member in Nyatsime, notoriously known for his state-sponsored terrorism. Wiwa has endured more than 10 months of severe torture and agony at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison for representing the oppressed, vulnerable, and stifled citizens.

Namibia is infuriated and cobra-headed that despite enduring close to a year in prison, the politically inept regime still has the guts to continue caging the innocent, vibrant change champion. We anticipated that the autocratic outfit after putting aside the whole six months jail term, was going to grant him his much-needed freedom. This travesty of justice must be confronted with equal measure. Citizens should amplify their revolutionary voices demanding freedom, justice, and equality.

Social Democrats in Namibia are not impressed with the level of solidarity for political prisoners who are being persecuted by the prosecution in captured courts. We urge citizens to flood the courts so that the detained feel energized to soldier on with the national democratic revolution. Change champions should do more to demonstrate their unwavering support in the fight for democracy in the motherland. Hon Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala is in jail because of his valor to face the Gold Mafia regime for a free Great Zimbabwe.

We are against his conviction and sentence which is ZANU PF-orchestrated. Judiciary independence remains one of our core fights against the totalitarian regime. The attempt by the politically bankrupt party to close the democratic space must face adequate resistance from those who subscribe to a free country that respects human liberties. Freedom of expression and the right to represent the oppressed are provisions enshrined in the Supreme Law of the Fatherland.

CCC Namibia was impressed by the undying and unfading fighting spirit of the political generator, Hon Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala, despite ZANUPF’s futile trial to break his resolve to lead the freedom train. The interim national Vice-Chairperson exhibited his commitment and dedication to soldiering in the protracted fight to liberate citizens from satanic dictatorship. Through his fully charged speech in the court of law, Job Sikhala clarified his source of inspiration. He pledged to follow the legendary steps of those who came before him.

Job Sikhala reflected his willingness to pay the ultimate price since leaders such as the late icon, Nelson Mandela endured 27 years in jail fighting for justice, equality, and freedom. He went on to pledge his beautiful life in defense of the voiceless members of his society who are being denied access to a free Zimbabwe. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of the innocent legislator, lawyer, and CCC interim Vice-Chairperson. His denial of bail proves that he is a prisoner of conscience and ZANU-PF is frightened by his presence in the national discourse.

In a nutshell, citizens are urged to register to vote, go vote for the change that delivers, and be ready to defend the vote in July or August. We have figured out that there is a selective application of the law. Our members are being targeted whilst Zanu-PF members and their surrogates enjoy impunity. Looters, thugs, corrupters, money launderers and mineral smugglers are walking scot-free. Let’s be ready to effect citizens’ arrests on rogue and corrupt citizens who are puppets of the East and the West. We have evidenced British citizens controlling 90% of the economy through the Al Jazeera documentary. On the other hand the Chinese and those from Belarus are busy displacing our people from their traditional lands in Mutoko, Hwange, Uzumba, Chilonga, etc

Hands off Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala, Jacob Ngarivhume, and all prisoners of conscience. Arrest the Gold Mafia responsible for looting the national cake. They have grabbed too much for the citizens to ignore! Let’s embrace dangerous freedom against state repression by penting-up our outrage demanding a free and equal society.

President Chamisa Makes Passionate Appeal To Soldiers

Tinashe Sambiri|The new CCC government will not dismiss soldiers and police officers.

This was said by the CCC leader President Nelson Chamisa in Harare on Monday.

The CCC leader also bemoaned the lack of political tolerance in the country.

“Citizens bear in mind that we build a country through love and unity.

Even those whom we do not agree with must be tolerated. Zimbabwe is one. Let’s learn to accompany each other with our ears even when we do not sink with our hearts. Tolerance must be practiced by all citizens.

When our new government comes into power. We will not dismiss our police, soldiers and members of the Central Intelligence Organisation and those who work for government,” said President Chamisa.

EU Speaks On Sikhala, Ngarivhume Convictions

By A Correspondent| The European Union (EU) has said it is closely monitoring the recent court rulings in which prominent opposition leaders namely Job Sikhala of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) and Jacob Ngarivhume were found guilty of obstruction and inciting public violence respectively.

Posting on Twitter, EU reminded the judiciary that the constitution of Zimbabwe guarantees citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

The EU called on the judiciary to protection these fundamental rights instead of curtailing them by jailing those who exercise their rights.

“The #EU is closely monitoring the recent court rulings in #Zimbabwe convicting opposition politicians. Zimbabwe’s constitution ensures citizens’ rights to freedom of expression & peaceful assembly. The judiciary is expected to protect these fundamental rights,” the EU said.

ED Ally Ignored Traditional Beliefs

By A Correspondent- Gold miner Pedzisai “Scott” Sakupwanya’s Better Brands company reportedly ignored local traditional beliefs which led to several deaths of artisanal miners at his Redwing Mine in Manicaland province’s Penhalonga area, NewsDay has learnt.

Chief James Kurauone Mutasa who led a traditional cleansing ceremony at the mine on Sunday said they had to intervene to appease the spirits of artisanal miners who perished at the mine. He said they were worried over the recurrence of fatal accidents which they linked to the spirits of dead miners.

The ritual ceremony was attended by several Zanu-PF top officials, artisanal miners and Better Brands top officials led by its general manager, Cuthbert Chitima, among other stakeholders.

“It’s important (ritual ceremony) so that we cannot have similar incidences,” said Chief Mutasa, speaking on behalf of other traditional leaders.

“Redwing Mine has been running over the years for at least a century and there was business takeover, but I think those who previously operated at the mine did not remind the new owners of the traditional ceremonies we were used to doing and this is where the problem was.

When there was a takeover, we were overlooked as traditional leaders because there were some traditional ceremonies we carried at a certain time, but I think this has been addressed after our ceremony.”

Civic groups operating in Manicaland have raised concern over the number of deaths recorded at the mine.

Early this year, government halted operations at the mine after several deaths, but it was reopened recently.

During its closure, the company was accused of engaging in secret mining activities by civic groups

“It’s not an issue of Better Brands alone because there are some illegal miners who would come to the mine at midnight and do some mining. We also have some traditional wrangles, so it was also difficult,” said Chief Mutasa.

“Miners should also take their personal security seriously by wearing protective clothing.”

Domestic Workers Steal US$17k, Disappear

By A Correspondent- Two domestic workers at a farm in Headlands allegedly stole a cash stash of US$17 090 from their employer and vanished from their workstation.

The incident allegedly happened in January 2023 at Mutunhu Farm in Headlands.

The long arm of law finally caught up with Meeting Phiri, who was employed as a farm gardener.

Police are hunting for Martha Kasasa, an accomplice in the matter, who is now a fugitive from justice.

Phiri, who was a self-actor, did not waste the court’s time when he appeared before Rusape magistrate, Ms Annie Ndiraya, and pleaded guilty.

Ms Ndiraya slapped him with a six-year jail term.

She set aside 18 months on condition of good behaviour.

Another 24 months were further suspended on condition that he restitutes Mr John Winskill his money.

Prosecutor, Mr Marlon Makamba told the court that Phiri worked in cahoots with Kasasa and stole the money during Mr Winskill’s absence.

Phiri was employed by the complainant as a gardener, and on January 30, 2023 at around 6am, the complainant put US$17 090 in a plastic bag and placed it under his vehicle seat. He visited the fields, leaving the vehicle keys in a drawer in the lounge.

“The accused person and Kasasa, who was employed as a maid, reported for work as usual. Martha picked the keys from the drawer and unlocked the car. The two searched the vehicle and found the US$17 090 stashed under the vehicle seat.

“They wrapped the money with a java cloth and went away. They shared the money in Harare. Phiri took US$10 500 while Kasasa took the remainder,” said Mr Makamba.

Mr Winskill returned from the fields around 11am and found the accused persons gone.

After checking and failing to locate them, the complainant became suspicious and went to check for his money in the vehicle.

He discovered that the money had been stolen.

He then made a report to the police, leading to Phiri’s arrest.

ED To Drill 8 Boreholes For Matabeleland

By A Correspondent- Matabeleland North province is expected to receive eight borehole drilling rigs as part of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s efforts to curb water shortages in the region, Provincial Affairs and Devolution minister Richard Moyo has revealed.

Moyo told Southern Eye that three rigs had already been delivered to the province.

“So far, I am only aware of three that have been channelled to two districts in Matebeleland North. Two have been disbursed to Lupane district and another one is in Umguza district,” Moyo said.

“I haven’t got much detail, but tomorrow (today), I am scheduled to meet with the head of Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) for further information concerning that.”

He said drilling in Lupane was already underway.

“I don’t know about Umguza, but in Lupane they have already started the drilling process. I am waiting to hear more on that issue during my meeting with the head,” Moyo said.

Moyo recently revealed that Mnangagwa had embarked on a huge project to curb the water crisis in Zimbabwe. The project includes acquisition of borehole drilling rigs to increase the number of boreholes in communities.

“The President bought 80 rigs for the whole country to drill water through Zinwa. So in Matabeleland North we are going to receive eight rigs,” he said.

The 80 rigs will reportedly be equitably distributed throughout the country’s provinces.

“Its Terrorism”: PSMAS Investigating Officer

By A Correspondent- An investigating officer in the case of four Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS) bosses who are facing allegations of stealing US$702 386 from their employer has equated their crime to an act of terrorism.

Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) officer Erick Chacha made the claims while opposing bail to Farai Muchena (54) (chief executive officer), Victor Chaipa (49) (group strategy and performance executive), Cosmas Mukwesha (50) (group secretary) and performance manager Polite Mugwagwa (41).

“I equate what they did as a terrorist attack to the country. We have facts against the accused persons and what they did has a negative impact on our beloved country,” Chacha told the court yesterday.

Harare regional magistrate Stanford Mambanje deferred the matter to Friday for ruling.

The court heard that sometime in 2020, the PSMAS board passed a resolution to venture into buying and selling of gold.

It was further resolved that staff members from its procurement department were to act as buyers and agents for buying the gold on behalf of PSMAS.

On February 18, 2021, PSMAS, acting on the board resolution, handed over these projects of gold buying, cannabis growing and micro finance business to the Premier Service Holding Company to enable them to focus on their core business of health insurance.

On July 13 2021, Muchena sent a memo to the complainant’s principal officer requesting funding for the gold project. It is the State’s case that the funding amounted to US$237 794, with US$108 674 as pre-trading funding.

Muchena later advised PSMAS about the formation of a company styled Claydust solely for the buying and selling of gold to Fidelity Printers and Refiners.

In response, the complainant disposed of its ZB Bank shares totalling 659 643 and valued at US$38 000 to fund the gold project.

It is alleged that the accused persons, however, diverted from the initially agreed position of using the complainant’s procurement team in buying the gold on behalf of the society.

The court heard that instead, the accused persons engaged 18 private agencies unknown to the PSMAS for gold buying.

The audit uncovered that the accused persons received and converted all the money realised from the sale of gold to Fidelity Printers totalling US$702 386,80 to their own use.

Meanwhile, two of their accomplices Cecilia Alexander and Wellington Tutisa started their bail application yesterday.

Parents Brace For Tough Times As Schools Open

By A Correspondent- Parents and guardians have been warned to brace for tough times ahead of schools opening on Monday next week over demands for exclusive fees payments in United States dollars and skyrocketing prices of uniforms.

A snap survey by NewsDay showed that some retailers were selling uniforms and other school consumables exclusively in United States dollars, while others had set limits for local currency payments.

Some boarding schools are also demanding school fees in United States dollars at a time the majority of the workers are earning in local currency.

The local currency was trading at $2 700 for US$1 yesterday at the parallel market, against $1 070 on the official market.

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions secretary-general Japhet Moyo said workers had no capacity to meet the demands by schools.

“It is going to be difficult for the parents and guardians,” Moyo said.

“We are likely to see a rise in psychological-related problems. They can’t afford sending children to school.

“Many will go to loan sharks, who will wipe out all their earnings.”

Addressing a post-Cabinet media briefing on Tuesday, Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa said government had put in place measures to ensure the smooth reopening of schools.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general Raymond Majongwe said this was not possible.

“The holiday started and ended with the ministry spewing mindless propaganda and threats of arrests against teachers doing lessons in their own time and spaces,” Majongwe said.

“Teachers are disgruntled about their low pay, rising prices and the unwillingness of government to treat them fairly by giving them the same increment it gave the security forces.”

Zimbabwe National Union of School Heads secretary-general Munyaradzi Majoni said he was not aware of any measures taken by government to ensure the smooth reopening of schools.

“We still have contentious issues related to extremely low salaries for workers in the education sector,” Majoni said.

“We still have school fees assistance, which comes late and using a model which all the unions rejected … Our members are not too sure of what is being referred to here.”

Zimbabwe Teachers Association secretary-general Goodwill Taderera said schools would be opened, but learning was not guaranteed.

“Measures for smooth reopening of school have to encompass all the key stakeholders,” Taderera said.

“We need sustainable measures for all people who ensure that the learners can attend school without disruptions.”

Khanyi Mbau, Zim Boyfriend Kudzai Mushonga Split?

By A Correspondent- South African actress and reality television star Khanyi Mbau has broken up with her Zimbabwean boyfriend, Kudzai Mushonga, according to reports.

Khanyi Mbau and Kudzi have been in the spotlight for their lavish lifestyle and dramatic relationship.

The couple met in 2016 at a campaign meeting and started dating in 2019. They went public with their relationship in February 2021 when Khanyi posted a picture of herself in Kudzi’s car on Instagram.

The couple have been living a luxurious life in Dubai, where they have been spoiling each other with expensive gifts, such as cars, diamonds and designer clothes. Khanyi even tattooed Kudzi’s name on her thigh, and he tattooed hers on his chest.

The couple made headlines in August 2021 when Khanyi left Kudzi in Dubai without telling him and flew back to South Africa.

Kudzi claimed she was missing and pleaded with her to return on social media. He later apologised for the reason she left and said he still loved her.

An anonymous Instagram user sent a DM to Maphephandaba, revealing that the relationship between the two lovebirds has finally crashed. The source said:

“It looks like Khanyi and Kudzi have broken up, and Madam is keeping it on the low. Kudzi is back on the streets living his best life without her. Rumour says she blocked him and moved back to SA hustling, and the lifestyle is not even there.

“Check Khanyi’s bio. She even deleted the Zimbabwean flag but kept the Dubai flag still lol. But a close source told me they are done done, and Kudzi is back doing hookups.”

Khanyi Mbau and Kudzai Mushonga are yet to react to the allegations that they have gone their separate ways.

CIO Throws Chiwenga Under The Bus

By- One of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s state security officers who accompanied him to South Africa to seek medication in 2019 has denied seeing his former wife, Mary Mubaiwa’s attempting to kill him.

Constantino Chiwenga alleges that Marry tried to kill him by unplugging the hospital life support system and attempting to sneak him out of the ward.

The trial in which Marry is facing attempted murder charges continued yesterday with the third security officer concluding his testimony.

Mr Andrew Mugari, who was one of the security officers who accompanied Vice President Chiwenga to South Africa to seek medication in 2019, appeared before regional magistrate Ms Feresi Chakanyuka.
Prosecutor Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti yesterday cross-examined Mr Mugari who maintained the testimony that he gave during the last trial when he was being cross-examined by Mubaiwa’s lawyer Ms Beatrice Mtetwa.
Mr Mugari said he did not see who removed the tubes from the VP’s body and all he knew was that they were just the two of them, Mubaiwa and the VP in the ward, so they were the only ones who knew who removed the tubes.
He said he helped VP Chiwenga back to his bed and called a nurse who came and reattached the tubes.
Mr Mugari said he saw some blood stains under Vice President’s bed and on the right side of the t-shirt that he was wearing and managed to take a photograph of the stained t-shirt.
The trial continues on May 18, as the State intends to summon the fourth witness Major Nyoni. Herald

Maid Poisons Employer

By A Correspondent- A woman in Glen Norah is thanking the heavens for her keen sense of smell after it saved her from drinking a lethal concoction.

Her 18-year-old housemaid, Nyaradzo Gosha, had laced her drink with poison in a fit of anger after being denied permission to meet her sister.

The police have arrested and charged Gosha with the attempted murder of her employer, Konai Muzhangiri, who is 37 years old.

Assistant Inspector Webster Dzvova, the Harare provincial deputy police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest and shared the circumstances of the case with H-Metro.

According to Dzvova, the complainant had instructed her 5-year-old daughter to prepare a glass of Mazoe Orange Crush for her on April 28 at around 7 pm.

Upon receiving the drink, the complainant detected a pungent odour emanating from it, which raised a red flag. She questioned Gosha about the odour, and she confessed to adding rat poison, baking yeast, jungle oats, and Fenu Greek seeds to the 2-litre drink.

Gosha’s motive was to eliminate her employer since she had denied her the opportunity to go out before her sister’s arrival to pick her up.

“Circumstances were that the accused is the complainant’s housemaid. On April 28, at around 1900 hours, the complainant asked her 5-year-old daughter to prepare a Mazoe Orange crush drink for her. She filled the glass with undiluted Mazoe and gave it to the complainant. Complainant sensed a poisonous smell from the Mazoe drink. She asked the accused person where the smell was coming from and accused confessed that she had added rat poison, baking yeast, jungle oats, and Fenu greek seeds into the 2-litre Mazoe drink. The accused person was reported to have told complainant that she had done this in order to get rid of her since she was refusing to give her a chance to go out before the arrival of her sister who was coming to collect her,” Ass-Insp Dzvova told H-Metro.

Mugabe Minister Released From Prison

By- Former Public Service minister Petronella Kagonye has completed her 16-month jail term for theft of trust property.
Her lawyer Rungano Mahuni confirmed this to a local private daily this week.

Kagonye was jailed in June 2022 for having converted laptops donated by the Postal and Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) to personal use during her time in the office.

The laptops were meant to support rural schools under the e-learning project.
She was sentenced to three years in jail, but 12 months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
A further eight months were suspended on condition that she reimburses Postal & Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe US$10 000, leaving her with an effective 16-month jail term.
The court took into account the fact that she committed the offence while she was the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare.
The court said one of her key result areas was to enhance social protection of vulnerable groups in the country, but she acted in the contrary.
Kagonye never rested after she was jailed complaining that her sentence was harsh and excessive.
She filed several applications which were all turned down by the High Court.
Her last appeal in October last year was dismissed by judges of appeal, Justices Rodgers Manyangadze and Benjamin Chikowero.
“The sentence does not shock us. If anything, it appears to err on the side of leniency. But that is beside the point,” said the judges.
They said Kagonye was the best person to have appreciated the need to take the laptops to rural schools as a way of removing some of the barriers to accessing education.

Man R_apes Neighbour’s 11yr Old

By A Correspondent- Aleck Masomera (57) was convicted of raping an 11-year-old neighbour’s daughter after a full trial by Harare regional magistrate Mrs Letwin Rwodzi.

The State alleged that the accused proposed love to the complainant, but the girl rebuffed the advances. On the next day, the complainant went to the accused’s place and the accused allegedly raped her.

The court heard that on an unknown date but during the month of July 2022, and during the day the complainant enrolled with the accused for extra lessons.

It was the State’s case that the accused then started proposing love to the complainant but the girl rebutted the advances.

On the day in question the complainant went home after extra lessons and her grandmother asked her she had finished her assignments and she told her that she had not and her grandmother ordered her to go and finish the assignments.

The following day the complainant went to the accused’s place again.

It was alleged that the accused entered his bedroom and called the complainant who complied and sat on the bed next to him.

It was alleged that the accused then raped the girl.

Madzibaba Makururu Warns Churches Against Lying To ED

By A Correspondent- The leader of Johanne the Fifth of Africa, Madzibaba Andby Makururu, has cautioned churches against exaggerating the number of congregants who will vote for President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the upcoming elections.

His remarks come after VaPostori for Economic Development (VaPostori4ED) claimed they would mobilize over two million members to vote for President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Makururu made these comments while addressing his followers at Hauna Growth Point in Manicaland province during his tour to mobilize support for the ruling ZANU PF party. He told his followers:

I have been in Masvingo and Harare and l know the number of people who are going to vote. As bishops, we need to support our President Emmerson Mnangagwa and we should show him by voting in our numbers.

I know there might be some people who think I want resources from the government, I have not begged for resources because I want to show love to our President. I am going around the country using my own resources.

I am encouraging churches not to lie to President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the number of people who are going to vote for Zanu PF. It’s not good at all, but I am happy with churches that are campaigning for the President Mnangagwa.

Andby Makururu, who met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House recently, has predicted a landslide victory for the ruling Zanu PF party in the upcoming elections.

Religion, particularly Christianity, has a significant influence on the political landscape in Zimbabwe, and churches have played a role in shaping the country’s direction since the colonial era. However, the relationship between the church and politics has been complicated, with accusations of partisanship and concerns about religious leaders holding political positions.

The political climate is heating up as Mnangagwa faces tough competition from his opponent in the 2018 elections, Nelson Chamisa, the leader of Citizens Coalitions for Change.

Man Shot By Accommodation Seeking Stranger

By A Correspondent- A 45 year-old man from Bulawayo was shot in the stomach after answering the door for a stranger who had knocked at his house in the Pumula South area.
The shooter ran away when the victim yelled for aid, therefore police have not yet determined a specific reason for the shooting.

Inspector Abednico Ncube, a police spokesperson for Bulawayo, verified the shooting, which took place on May 2 at around 7 PM.

He stated that a manhunt has been launched by the police to find the shooter and made a plea for anyone who may know the shooter to get in touch with their local police station.

‘’Police in Bulawayo are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of a medium-built man who shot a 45-year-old man from Pumula South. Circumstances are that on the 2nd day of May 2023 at around 1910 hours, the complainant was at his place of residence inside the house when the accused person who is medium built, wearing a golf T-shirt and khaki trousers knocked at the sitting room door and the complainant attended to him. The accused asked the complainant for a room to rent but the complainant told him that there was no room to rent,’’ said Insp Ncube.

He said the suspect lost his temper, pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the stomach.

Insp Ncube warned members of the public against opening doors for strangers.

Home Affairs Secretary Gerald Gwinji Sucked In Property Dispute

HOME Affairs Permanent Secretary, Dr Gerald Gwinji, has been sucked into a property dispute between Arosume Property Development (Arosume) and Louisa Kalenga-Bandal amid reports of spirited attempts to summon his Local Government and Public Works Ministry counterpart, Zvinechimwe Churu “for interviews”.

This comes as the Harare-based realtor has been battling several parties accused of using “political influence to make undue demands and ludicrous allegations” against it, including claims that it had “annexed 14 stands in Carrick Creagh when they had been repossessed by the Government in October 2022”.

The company has also been complaining about the continued harassment of its officers by law enforcement agencies on incomplete investigations.

“We act for Arosume… in partnership with the Government through a Public Private
Partnership (PPP), which is dated June 2007 and still subsists. We are instructed to…
lodge this extraordinary complaint against the unfair meddling and potentially unlawful
conduct of… Gwinji in the administration of the tripartite agreement,” Jiti Law Chambers
said in a May 02 letter to Churu, adding the land dispute “did not fall in the Home Affairs
Secretary’s mandate.

Jiti argued Gwinji ought to have directed his requests to the Local Government
secretary’s superiors”.

“It has come to our attention that on the 16th of March 2023… addressed a letter (to his
peer) on behalf of the Criminal Investigation Department’s commercial crimes division
northern region… to interview you. That alone is bizarre,” it said.

While Arosume and its lawyers insist that any moves to obtain information about the PPP or interrogate senior Local Government Ministry officials ought to be sanctioned by the Public Service Commission or top bureaucrats like Cabinet Secretary Dr Misheck Sibanda, the letter should have been alternatively directed – and under ordinary circumstances – to Minister July Moyo.

According to Gwinji’s dossier, he claims “Ms Kalenga-Bandal had been the “permanent
owner and beneficiary of stand number 313 under the Sally Mugabe Housing Cooperative
(SMHC)”, which was meant to benefit civil servants.

“In 2004, stand number 313 did not exist at law because the subdivision was only
approved by the surveyor general on the 25th of January 2008. At no point in 2004 was
SMHC… empowered/entitled to allocate Borrowdale land,” the lawyers said, adding the
Home Affairs secretary’s “requests for certain documents in a bid to aid the
complainant’s case in an ongoing civil case and litigation was quite worrying”.

“… Gwinji has no power or authority to (directly or indirectly) allocate state land, which is administered by another ministry. Having been a secretary for a while this is known to him and, as such, his attempt to assert falsely that… Bandal was ‘permanently allocated’ is improper and could only be motivated by either a corrupt intent or gross incompetence on his part. Either way, we believe that his conduct is worth your investigative attention,” they said in the latter also copied to the Commissioner-General Police (CGP) Godwin Matanga and Daniel Garwe’s National Housing Ministry.

Crucially, the former Health Ministry secretary’s actions not only risked undermining the tripartite agreement and related investment policies, but he had “no power to revise cabinet decisions regarding the sale/allocation of state land and he must give a reasonable explanation for his acts of insubordination”.

“… Gwinji also has no authority at all to involve himself in the operational command of the police, in particular, to direct how any investigation must be conducted. His attempt to usurp the powers of the CGP is potentially in violation of Section 174 of the Criminal Code,” Arosume said in the letter.

And the company has not only sought to refute the Home Affairs Secretary, and Kalenga-Bandal’s claims to the land on the basis that the farm – underpinning SMHC – was only gazetted for compulsory acquisition in 2006, but stand 313 of Carrick Creagh, Borrowdale has interestingly, if not bizarrely, turned up as one of those owned and listed under Simba Chikore and Bona Mugabe’s divorce proceedings.

Gwinji could not be reached for a comment.

Duped Harare Home Buyer Awaits Fate

The fate of a Harare man who lost two vehicles in a bungled deal that was supposed to provide him a residential stand in Ashdown Park, Harare, will be determined next week. The vehicles are currently being kept as exhibits in a probe into possible fraud.

The two vehicles, a Toyota Hiace Quantum and a Honda Airwave, had been at the Police Commercial Crime Division for the past three years while investigations into the incident were being performed. The complainant filed an application at the Harare Magistrates Court asking for their release.

Two men, Calvin Marimo and Temba Dzamwarira, are accused of defrauding the complainant by failing to transfer title of the residential stand despite receiving full payment for it.

“They themselves did not know who owns the piece of land in question, and accused is among people asserting ownership of the land,” ruled the magistrate.

Workers’ Safety A Priority

MASVINGO-At least 4 000 injuries and 100 deaths are recorded annually from occupational accidents and ill health, National Social Security Authority (NSSA) acting general manager Charles Shava has said.
He said US$15m is lost in compensation, medical and other related bills after the deaths and injuries.

He said this at the NSSA-organized national commemorations on the World Day for Safety and Health at workplaces held at the Civic Centre in Masvingo on Friday.
“In Zimbabwe, we have up to 4 000 injuries every year. We are a small economy, and these figures might sound small but are high.
We have plus or minus 100 deaths yearly in Zimbabwe.
“There is a cost to our economy that goes with these statistics. We estimate that after recent research, up to US$ 15 million is lost to our economy because of work-related injuries. This might be in the form of employees who go off sick, those who die, and the cost goes to us as NSSA,” he said.
The commemorations were held under the theme: ‘Safe and Healthy Work Environment; A Fundamental Principle and Right at Work’.

They are held to promote the prevention of occupational accidents, injuries and ill health.

Minister of Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare Professor Paul Mavima was the guest of honour represented by his deputy minister Lovemore Matuke.

Bona Mugabe Alone Got 21 Farms Peasants Got Nothing

By Wilbert Mukori | If you asked most Zimbabweans out there today what the war of independence was about; most of them will say, “Land!”

Before independence the major would have said “One man, one vote!” but all political rights were kicked into the tail grass by Mugabe and his Zanu PF friends. They did not trust the people to vote them into power and so they made it clear in 1980 that if the party did not win the election the bush war would continue. Naturally, the people voted to end the war.

It was only in the late 1990s that the land issue took centre stage. By then the country’s once robust economy was now in serious trouble; the two decades of reckless spending on social welfare such as schools and health care but worst of all on political patronage to pamper his party loyalists was simply unsustainable. By the late 1990s Mugabe had no wealth to dish out, especially to his ever demanding but wasteful party loyalists, and so he turned to the one resource the nation still had in great abundance – land.

The worsen economic situation made the populous restless for meaningful political change and increasing popularity of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) opposition, launched in 1999, was no surprise.

Mugabe’s first clash with MDC was over the Zanu PF proposed 2000 new constitution in which the party’s notable give away was seizing land from white farmers to accelerate the black resettlement of programmes. MDC campaign for the rejection of the new constitution on the grounds it was not democratic. Zanu PF lost the referendum.

Zanu PF’s response to referendum defeat was to politicise the land issue by making land redistribution its flagship policy for the next two decades. The party accused the MDC, the white farmers and all it’s critics, especially the British and their western allies, of conspiring to frustrate land redistribution from the whites to the black majority.

The land issue always flared up during elections in the form of blacks, mostly war veterans and Zanu PF youths invading white owned farms accompanied headline grabbing gratuitous violence. The violence would spread to target MDC’s supporters who were accused of seeking regime change to end and reverse the farm seizures!

In the early years of the white farm invasions Zanu PF insisted the seized farms were to resettle the landless peasants in the overcrowded rural areas. The rural areas are still overcrowded to this day because very few peasants were ever resettled.

The Zanu PF ruling elite and their cronies were allocated the seized farms. “All blacks are entitled to land, under one person one farm!” the party announced.

After a few years it again became clear that some of the leaders had more than one farm. The latest information I had was that the late Robert Mugabe, his wife, daughter and two sons had 13 farms between them. Now I realise I had been misinformed.

Bona, Mugabe’s daughter, is divorcing her husband and the couple have 21 farms, 17 cars including a Rolls Royce worth US$ 800 000, 21 residential properties including a mansion in Dubai worth US$8 million plus a lot more besides.

So, Bona and her husband alone have 21 farms, nearly twice as many farms as the 13 the whole Mugabe family was rumoured to have.

It is a well documented historic fact that Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector collapsed, with it the economy, soon after the start of the farm seizures in 2000. The new farm owners, the Zanu PF ruling elite and the cronies, failed to maintain the productivity of the disposed white farmers.

Zimbabwe had prided herself as the breadbasket of the region before the farm seizures not only lost that acclaim but has often relied on food aid – so economic impoverish we could not even pay for it. Zimbabwe is, for all practical purposes, the Biblical Garden of Eden. We are starving in the Garden of Eden, a damning testimonial to failed leadership.

Zimbabwe has had the great misfortune of being led by corrupt, incompetent and murderous thugs who for the last 43 years and counting. The Zanu PF thugs have rigged elections denying the people a meaningful say in the governance of the govern for the last 43 years and counting.

The nation has had many opportunities to end the Zanu PF dictatorship in the 43 years since the country’s independence in 1980. The best chances coming during the 2008 to 2013 GNU and sadly these too were wasted. Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends who were entrusted the task of implementing the democratic reforms failed to get even one token reform implemented.

Mugabe bribed Tsvangirai and his MDC friends with the trappings of high office, the ministerial limo, the generous salary and allowances, a US$4 million mansion for Tsvangirai, etc., etc. And in return, the MDC leaders forgot about implementing the reforms.

The recent Al Jazeera Gold Mafia documentary shows how President Mnangagwa, who had no more white owned farms to seize and give again, has been looting the nation’s gold. We know the wholesale looting is happening with other resources such as diamonds and lithium.

It is no secret that Mnangagwa is filthy rich and so would be his wife and children. Rumour has it that Mnangagwa has a mansion in Dubai too. It is no wonder these Zanu PF thugs have been rigging elections and have even committed mass murders just to stay in power; when there is so much wealth to be amassed, giving up power is simply unthinkable.

Still, the nation must bite the bullet and demand the reforms and free elections because the present political system in which the few have grown filthy rich at the expense of millions forced to live in abject poverty is unsustainable. Zanu PF is rigging the 2023 elections we must make sure the regime does not get political legitimacy. We need a new GNU only this time, we must see to it that the democratic reforms are implemented.- SOURCE: zimbabwelight.blogspot.com

Mnangagwa Snubs Workers

President Chamisa Charms Workers
As Mnangagwa Snubs Workers

By Stephen Sarkozy Chuma

01-05-2023

CCC leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa today addressed thousands of workers who gathered at Dzivarasekwa Stadium in Harare to commemorate International Workers Day.

President Chamisa yet again proved that he is the People’s President as he found time to attend the event despite his tight schedule as the country heads towards general elections.

In his short but loaded speech, the President said it is the duty of a sitting President to create favorable working conditions for workers.

He also highlighted his vision towards a new Great Zimbabwe that will filled prosperity and abundance. The President said he will create job opportunities for youths through reopening of industries and investment.

As usual, Gold Mafia kingpin and ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa snubbed the event despite having been invited by Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU). Under Mnangagwa, workers especially civil servants have become a mockery due to their nervous working conditions.

Today’s program also confirmed the cutting of the umbilical cord between MDC-T and the workers movement as ZANU PF proxy, Douglas Mwonzora snubbed the event too.

In Nelson Chamisa, the workers movement have found a new hope that will ameliorate their nervous conditions.

Safety Tips For Miners

PSL Approves Colliery Stadium

Who Are Set To Be the Stars of Royal Ascot 2023?

Royal Ascot is a horse racing meeting that is followed around the world. The best horses from across the globe compete in the respective divisions in Flat racing and everyone involved dreams of winning one of the races across the five days.

Here is a look at some of the stars that will be in action this year at the royal meeting.

Inspiral Set to Return in Queen Anne Stakes

With victories in the Group One Coronation Stakes and Prix du Jacques le Marois, Inspiral ended 2022 as one of the leading milers in the sport. She missed out on the opportunity to win a British Classic due to a setback early in the campaign, but she made up for that lost time.

John and Thady Gosden’s runner is the 3/1 favourite in the horse racing latest odds for the Queen Anne Stakes, the opening race of the 2023 Royal Ascot meeting. She is set to take on the Godolphin duo of Modern Games and Native Trail.

The daughter of Frankel will make her seasonal reappearance in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury. That outing should ensure she heads to Royal Ascot in peak shape.

Australian Sprinter Coolangatta Entered in King’s Stand Stakes

Australia have had a lot of success in the sprint races at Royal Ascot in recent years. They have a great chance of more glory this year with star filly Coolangatta. The three-year-old is already a two-time Group One winner.

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace’s runner won at the highest level for the first time last September when she prevailed in the A J Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley. She then doubled her Group One tally on her opening appearances of 2023 as she landed the Black Caviar Lightning.

Her trip to Royal Ascot will be her first outing outside of Australia. She will take on Highfield Princess and Tenebrism two horses who had a lot of success in Europe in 2022, and former The Everest winner Nature Strip, who is set to return to the meeting following his victory last year.

English And French Derby Winners Set for Prince of Wales Clash

Last year’s English and French derby winners, Desert Crown and Vadeni respectively, are two of the runners expected to contest the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes this year. Those two horses had excellent three-year-old campaigns and their connections will be hoping they can replicate some of that success in open age company.

Unbeaten colt Desert Crown has not seen a racecourse since he won the 2023 Derby at Epsom. An injury ruled him out of the second half of the 2022 Flat season in Europe. The 1m2f contest at Royal Ascot could mark his return to action.

Vadeni followed up his French Derby victory with success in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown. The colt has appeared already this season. He had to settle for fourth place in the Prix Garny at Longchamp.

Royal Ascot 2023 takes place between 20th-24th June. There are a total of 35 races across the meeting at Berkshire-based racecourse in the UK.

Sikhala Jailed For Six (6) Months

By- A Harare magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa, has CCC deputy chair Job Sikhala to six months or a US$600 fine on charges of obstructing the course of justice.

Magistrate Gofa sentenced Sikhala after finding him guilty of the charge.

In her ruling, she said the State was able to prove that Sikhala was the one who authored and posted the video recording, which claimed that ZANU PF members killed the late Ali.
“The court is satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Sikhala was the one who recorded and uploaded the video.
“Sikhala was aware that police were investigating the murder case but he went ahead to make utterances that misled the police investigations,” she said.
She added that the evidence led by the State witnesses corroborated each other, and Sikhala is found guilty of obstructing the course of justice.

BREAKING: Another Magistrate Convicts Job Sikhala

By A Correspondent| Harare Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa has convicted Zengeza West legislator Job Sikhala on charges of obstructing the course of justice.

This comes hard on the heels of the conviction of Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume last week.

Ngarivhume has since been sentenced to four years in prison.

Former Minister Completes 16 Months Jail Term

Former Cabinet minister Petronella Kagonye has completed her 16-month jail term for theft of trust property, her lawyer Rungano Mahuni confirmed yesterday.

Kagonye was jailed in June 2022 for having converted laptops donated by the Postal and Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) to personal use during her time in office.

Bread Prices Soar

THE average price of a standard loaf of bread shot to $1 800 which is equivalent to US$1,70 at the official exchange rate of $1 059,60 to the greenback.

This represents a 109% hike on the $860 that was being charged mid-last month for the same loaf.

In an interview with a local daily yesterday, Consumer Council of Zimbabwe executive director Rosemary Mpofu said the consumer watchdog had noted with “great concern” increases in prices of basic commodities such as bread.

“Consumers are currently facing numerous challenges from high consumer prices, low wages and incomes. With schools set to open soon they will be further hard pressed in paying school fees, levies and buying uniforms with some schools said to be demanding foreign currency payments only,” Mpofu said.

“We appeal to retailers, producers and monetary authorities to dialogue and address issues driving prices high, among them being the volatile foreign currency exchange rates, in order to contain run-away price hikes causing untold suffering to consumers, meanwhile urging consumers to seek other healthy alternative foodstuffs, home grown, in order to cushion themselves against high prices.”

National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe president Luckymore Zinyama said it had set the bread price at US$1, but different exchange rates were influencing the high prices.

Statistics by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe showed that the US dollar and the Zimbabwe dollar were trading at a weighted average rate of US$1: $1 059. On the parallel market, the local currency was trading at around $2 100 against the US dollar.

“We have not changed the wholesale price of our bread. It is still at US$0,90 and we expect the retailers to sell it for US$1,” Zinyama said.

Bikita Sinomine To Electrify Surrounding Rural Communities

By A Correspondent- Bikita Sinomine, a lithium mining company has started construction on a $22 million power line stretching 120km from Tokwe to Bikita in Masvingo Province.

The power line will supply electricity to Bikita Sinomine’s lithium mine and also electrify surrounding communities and businesses in Bikita, Gutu, and Zaka.

The state media reported that, the company has allocated $2 million for the electrification of these rural areas.

Mine manager, David Mwanza said the power line will ensure a reliable power supply for Bikita Sinomine’s mining and processing operations and provide electricity to surrounding communities.

He said:

This US$22 million project will guarantee us adequate and reliable power for our operations while at the same time providing electricity to communities. We have set aside US$2 million for the rural electrification programme.

Mr Mwanza said Bikita Sinomine has invested $200 million in Spodumene and Pestilent Plants, both requiring constant power supply. Work on the 120km power line from Tokwe to Bikita began three weeks ago and is expected to be completed by December. The company aims to achieve $750 million in annual revenue this year, depending on the completion of the new plants in June and July.

According to finance manager Mr Amanda Makausi, Bikita Sinomine is projected to reach an annual revenue of $1 billion by 2024. The Chinese investor Sinomine’s $300 million takeover of Bikita Minerals has resulted in rapid growth, increasing production from 3 000 tonnes to 10 000 tonnes per month since February 2022.

The new plants are expected to triple production to 30 000 tonnes per month once commissioned. The increased production has also significantly increased the mine’s contribution to the fiscus, with Bikita Sinomine now being one of the biggest tax contributors in Masvingo province. The company pays $150 000 monthly in employment tax, $3 million monthly in other taxes, and mining royalties.

Bikita Sinomine’s rapid expansion has reportedly resulted in the creation of 660 jobs, with an additional 1 400 expected after the completion of the Petalite and Spodumene plants. The company is also said to be offering competitive salaries to workers along with a monthly production bonus, which is 50% of their net salary.

“A Divided Opposition Will Not Dislodge Zanu PF”

Former Harare mayor Elias Mudzuri said a divided opposition will not be able to dislodge President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the ruling Zanu PF party from power in this year’s elections.

Addressing journalists in the capital yesterday, Mudzuri, who was expelled from the MDC-T where he was vice-president, said all opposition parties need to unite to topple the ruling party and its leader.

“There is division (among the opposition) because there is confusion. You don’t just follow each other because you want to defeat Mnangagwa. I don’t just follow a person because I want to beat Mnangagwa. I must do so when I believe that when we are together we are going to deliver. The opposition must do the right things that will make voters appreciate their presence,” Mudzuri said.

“It’s up to all the opposition leaders to start talking to each other and when we talk we must meet in our minds. Politics of disgruntlement is not enough. There are also proper processes that help deliver expectations of the people.”

Mudzuri said the MDC name was no longer appealing because of several splits.

Nelson Chamisa formed the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) last year after MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora snatched the party, its name, symbols and assets.

“How can you appeal when you’re not organised? You can’t follow a disorganised institution. We must preserve this MDC because it is the main institution that stood the ground against Zanu PF,” Mudzuri said.

“But the leaders who have been coming have chosen to go astray and leave what the party demands us to do.”

Mwonzora’s spokesperson Lloyd Damba described Mudzuri as confused.

“If a person is personally confused he must not mistake that for opposition confusion,” he said.

CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said there was no confusion in the CCC.

“There is no confusion in the citizens’ movement. We are a big tent that unites all progressive citizens genuinely opposed to Zanu PF in the fight to win Zimbabwe for change. Since our formation in January 2022, we have left no stone unturned to ensure that citizens who oppose tyranny, poverty and injustice across all provinces focus all efforts on bringing transformation to our nation,” Mahere said.

“We have no time to worry about what outposts of Zanu PF are doing. Our only goal is to win big this year so that we end the suffering of the masses and usher in a new great Zimbabwe with dignity, prosperity and freedom for all.”

Political analyst Kudakwashe Munemo said Mudzuri’s remarks were being driven by frustration.

“Opposition candidates must not just come together for the sake of sharing power, revive lost relevance and fulfil personal political goals at the expense of the majority,” he said.

Condolences Pour In For Hazel Jojo

Dearest Hazel (the one who is always next to me in any picture, not by coincidence, but that’s how close you were to me) It is with a heavy heart and tear-filled eyes that I write this letter to you. I wish I could tell you how much I miss you, my dear friend. It feels as though a part of me is missing, a void left by your untimely departure.

I am haunted by the day of your accident and the message you sent, asking me to call. I was busy and couldn’t call you back, and now I would give anything, even everything I own, just to hear your voice for 30 seconds. As your best friend, we’ve been through thick and thin together.

We bought the car that tragically took your life, and we purchased the land you were building on. The memories of our journey together are bittersweet. It is like losing too many soldiers in a war; even victory feels hollow because the cost was too great. I can’t help but question why this had to happen to you, Hazel. You were such a bright light in this world, filled with so much potential. We were supposed to go to that summit in the USA together, but now I must forge ahead without you.

Your recent 25th birthday celebration, which I had planned to surprise you with a dinner, will forever be etched in my heart as a reminder of our lost time together. Our friends are devastated, and we all gather in sorrow, asking God why He took you from us. I will miss our weekly rituals – the Nandos deliveries on Tuesdays and our KFC wings dates every Friday. They will never be the same without you.

Hazel, you were a champion for the girl child, believing that they should be more than just women. I want you to know that your legacy will live on through me. I promise to carry your message, your hopes and dreams, and make them a reality. Wherever you are, my dear friend, I hope you can read this letter.

I hope you know how much you mean to me and how deeply you are missed. I still wait for a message or a call from you, even though I know it will never come.

Until we meet again, Hazel, please know that you are forever in my heart.

With love and tears, Tendai

Tribute to Hazel Jojo

@HazelJojo2 A young bright, passionate & creative woman leader. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of a dynamic sister, friend, ally & valued asset to the women’s rights & SRHR sectors. Yet, we remain immensely inspired by her short earthly journey.

Julius Malema Blasts Zimbabweans For Failing Ngarivhume

South Africa’s main opposition leader Julius Malema, has urged Zimbabweans to stand up against the harassment of pro-democracy activists following the jailing of opposition politician Jacob Ngarivhume last week.

Ngarivhume was sentenced to four years imprisonment for calling for mass protests in 2020.

He will, however, serve three years.

“I was shocked to hear that the Zimbabwean government has jailed Jacob Ngarivhume @NgarivhumeJacob, for demanding accountability through picket lines on how COVID-19 funds were used in 2020 by kleptocratic politicians,” Malema, who is the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, tweeted.

“Sending an activist to four years imprisonment for simply holding different political views is pathetic.  Zimbabweans must learn to protect their own, particularly those who are the voice of the voiceless against the corrupt few. The truth will never be incarcerated; Africa we are one.”

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has been criticised for shrinking the country’s democratic space by arresting critics and enacting controversial legislation.

One of the laws is the controversial Private Voluntary Organisations Amendment Bill which has been described by civil society as seeking to control the operations of non-governmental organisations at the forefront of exposing human rights violations, corruption and misgovernance.

Former Information minister Jonathan Moyo at the weekend said Mnangagwa was taking the country back to the dark days of Gukurahundi.

“Given sections 56, 58, 59, 60 and 61 of the 2013 Constitution, it beggars belief that any magistrate would be fooled by political prosecutors — some three months before a general election — into making a manifestly political decision to convict and impose a draconian sentence to knockout an electoral opponent of the sitting president, as a way of sending a chilling message to other presidential aspirants or voters,” Moyo posted on Twitter.

“Truth be told, the judiciary’s shocking mishandling of Bill of Rights cases these days is eerily reminiscent of the Gukurahundi years, when the Rhodesian State of Emergency retained between 1980 and 1990 was ruthlessly enforced.”

But Zanu PF information director Tafadzwa Mugwadi said Ngarivhume’s sentencing was befitting of the offence he committed.

“For the record, Ngarivhume was convicted for inciting and organising public violence,” Mugwadi said.

“There are so many opposition leaders in Zimbabwe who hold different political views with Zanu PF, the likes of (Douglas) Mwonzora, (Nelson) Chamisa, (Lovemore) Madhuku and many others who do not hold similar political views with Zanu PF, but they are not in jail.

“Unless Malema wants to tell us that Mwonzora, Chamisa and Madhuku hold similar political views with Zanu PF. No one knows what Malema smokes and how high or low it takes him, but what is clear is that what he is smoking is not good for him.”

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) deputy spokesperson Gift “Ostallos” Siziba yesterday said Malema’s remarks confirmed fears that Mnangagwa is an autocratic ruler.

“Comments by Malema have confirmed the failure by President Emmerson Mnangagwa. It shows the second republic, the new dispensation led by Mnangagwa is old wine in a new bottle. It has surpassed the late President Robert Mugabe post-Independence government in terms of closed democratic space,” Siziba said.

“President Mnangagwa has created a de-facto one-party State. The Bill of Rights under President Mnangagwa was long suspended thereafter denying Zimbabweans freedom of assembly and freedom of speech, the right to petition and demonstrate.”

A number of opposition activists and other government critics are facing various charges at the courts.

Recently, CCC spokesperson Fadzai Mahere was convicted on a law that the High Court ruled as invalid. She escaped jail by opting to pay a US$500 fine.

No Special Treatment For Mnangagwa’s Ambassador-At-Large

THE United Kingdom will not give any special treatment to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ambassador-at-large, Uebert Angel, who is embroiled in a money laundering and gold smuggling scandal, a minister said yesterday.

Conservative member Lord Peter Henry GoldSmith of Richmond Park made the remarks in response to a series of questions tabled in the second chamber of the UK Parliament by House of Lords member Jonathan Oates.

“Whilst Mr Angel holds a diplomatic passport he is not diplomatically accredited to the UK — countries are free to determine for themselves who they want to grant these passports to, but the passport itself does not confer any diplomatic status on the holder,” said GoldSmith who also serves as the Minister for Overseas Territories, Commonwealth, Energy, Climate and Environment at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.

He added: “We cannot comment further on specific cases at this stage. The UK sees corruption as an important barrier to economic reform and inclusive growth in Zimbabwe. We engage with the Government of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission, civil society and other actors in the fight against corruption in Zimbabwe.”

There have been calls for the UK to freeze assets belomging to Angel, who in March 2021 was appointed Zimbabwe’s ambassador-at-large to seek trade and investment opportunities across the globe for the country. He has emerged as the Gold Mafia kingpin after he was secretly recorded by international news channel  Al Jazeera journalists spilling beans on gold smuggling and money laundering in Zimbabwe.

Angel said he could use his diplomatic cover to launder as much asUS$1,2 billion in dirty money.

Oates asked what steps the UK government would take, if any, to investigate the activities of companies whose named directors are alleged to have been involved in conspiracy to commit financial crime.”

Oates also asked what steps the UK would take to investigate Angel’s alleged British citizenship to ascertain whether he should retain his diplomatic status.

Protect Workers, ZCTU Told

MASVINGO-The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has expressed concern over the flaunting of labour practices, environmental laws and inhuman conditions exposed to locals by Chinese companies operating in the country.

The congress’ president Florence Mucha Taruvinga said those employed by the Chinese are literally slaves who do not have a say even over their safety.

She said this today at the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) organized national commemorations of the World Day for Safety and Health at workplaces held at the Civic Centre in Masvingo.
The commemorations were held under the theme: ‘Safe and Healthy Work Environment; A Fundamental Principle and Right at Work’.

Minister of Public Service, Labour, and Social Welfare Professor Paul Mavima was the guest of honour represented by his deputy minister Lovemore Matuke.
NSSA acting General Manager Charles Shava, representatives from the International Labour Organisation, Employers’ Confederation of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Unions, Delta Beverages, Bulawayo City Council, Mimosa Platinum Mine, Hwange Coal and Gasification Company and Doves Funeral Services and several others attended the commemorations.

“We have serious safety deficits in the Chinese-owned companies. We are calling on NSSA to protect the citizens and workers in Zimbabwe at Chinese workplaces. As organized labour, we recognize the statutes in Zimbabwe. As citizens of the country, we follow and act upon what governs us.- Masvingo Mirror

Teacher Rapes 11y Old Girl

Aleck Masomera (57) was convicted of raping an 11-year-old neighbour’s daughter after a full trial by Harare regional magistrate Mrs Letwin Rwodzi.

Mnangagwa Coaxes War Collaborators

WAR collaborators have pledged their commitment to continue mobilising support for the ruling ZANU PF party and President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s progressive development mantra.

An engagement between the ZANU PF leadership and Zimbabwe Liberation War Collaborators Association (ZILIWACO) saw the war collaborators expressing confidence that the 5 million votes target is achievable on the back of mobilisation and education campaigns running under the theme: “Bereka Mwana Tiende Kunovhota”.

War collaborators also appealed to government to look into their welfare issues after the vetting exercise.

“As war collaborators, we support our party ZANU PF and we are going to work with the leadership in mobilising support. We launched our campaign Bereka Mwana Tiende Kunovhota and it has been a success encouraging our children to register to vote for President Emerson Mnangagwa,” noted ZILIWACO’s Pupurai Togarepi.

ZANU PF National Political Commissar Mike Bimha, who represented ZANU PF National Chairperson Cde Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri said the vetting of war collaborators as directed by President Mnangagwa is in progress.

“In line with Second Republic’s approach of leaving no one and no place behind it is important to attend to the huge number of war collaborators who were not vetted and those who registered appeals. The next step is to conduct a mop up vetting exercise once the resources are made available,” said Bimha

The provincial leadership in Masvingo has pledged to continue working with war collaborators in developmental programmes.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Masvingo, Cde Ezra Chadzamira weighed in, “We respect our war collaborators and we are ready to continue working with them in all our development programmes.”

Citizens Thwart Mwonzora Thugs Violence

CCC Namibia salutes the Youth Task force in Chinhoyi!

01 May 2023

Citizens in Namibia are gyrating hysterically in uncontrollable gusto celebrating the valor, mettle, and nerve displayed by the organic Youth Task force in Chinhoyi defending our party offices. The ZANU-PF-sponsored political outfit, Mdc Alliance combined with their masters yesterday, attempted to take over the CCC party offices using violence. Mr. Douglas Mwonzora did not recover from the multiple zeros he got in March 2022 by-elections. He is now unleashing his outrage on a non-violent and progressive people’s movement led by the pragmatic Change Champion in Chief, President Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

Namibia district salutes the vibrant youths who managed to resist rogue elements claiming ownership of the offices when the issue is still in the courts. The clueless, counterfeit party depends on ZANU-PF when it comes to grabbing party properties. It is not the first time to see a cordial affinity between the Harare regime and their surrogates. When they grabbed the Morgan Tsvangirai House, they were openly assisted by the state-captured police and soldiers. Since time immemorial, the genuine Mdc has never gotten any assistance of that nature from ZANU-PF. It was visible that the people’s project has been hijacked by the regime’s enablers.

Instead of preparing for the impending crucial plebiscite, Mr. Douglas and his unpopular party are busy chasing offices instead of mobilizing the electorate. They know July or August will give them other humiliating zeros. It is written on the wall that MDC Alliance has pressed the panic button. The people of Zimbabwe are cognizant that this fake organization is a ZANU-PF-constructed institution meant to derail the freedom train. Their attempt to sabotage real change will never suffice. Citizens are committed and dedicated to prosecuting the National Democratic Revolution to its logical conclusion.

ZANU PF’s popular culture of politically- motivated violence is now manifesting in the surrogate. Stones, knobkerries, catapults , and matchetes are indications of defeat. Regardless of the support they got from their masters and mistresses, the youth task force executed their revolutionary mandate to defend the party from marauding political cowards. Mwonzora has realized progress in the CCC nomination and candidate selection process which is faring its conclusion as it now reaches the final fourth stage. Mr. Mwonzora left his jacket behind during the clash and the subsequent failure to take over the Chinhoyi offices.

In a nutshell, Mr.Douglas Mwonzora should be charged with incitement of public violence. We demand justice to be served without fear or favor. Hon Job Saro Wiwa Sikhala has endured long pre-trial detention for almost a year on trumped-up charges when Mwonzora and cronies in ZANU-PF are taking the law into their own hands because of impunity. We demand an abrupt end to the apparent selective application of the law. Citizens should be treated equally before the law. Advocates of a complete change in Namibia clamour for the independent administration of the law by supposedly competent and impartial courts.

We have noted with deep concern the illegal conviction of Transform Zimbabwe, President Jacob Ngarivhume. This attempt to ban the rule of law and constitutionalism should be opposed peacefully. Section 59 of the Supreme Law of the motherland provides the fundamental right to peacefully protest against gross abuse of human rights, corruption, looting, gold smuggling, chrome smuggling, money laundering, and weaponization of the law. Calling for a peaceful demonstration against senseless and bare-faced corruption does not warrant any arrest in Zimbabwe. This is just law fare!

We demand justice for all prisoners of conscience. Sentencing social democrats a 3-year jail term for castigating corruption is not only unconstitutional but illegal and beyond Satanism.

Mining Safety Tips

Facts About Cholera

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Cholera remains a global threat to public health and an indicator of inequity and lack of social development.

Symptoms
Cholera is an extremely virulent disease that can cause severe acute watery diarrhoea. It takes between 12 hours and 5 days for a person to show symptoms after ingesting contaminated food or water (2). Cholera affects both children and adults and can kill within hours if untreated.

Most people infected with V. cholerae do not develop any symptoms, although the bacteria are present in their faeces for 1-10 days after infection and are shed back into the environment, potentially infecting other people.

Among people who develop symptoms, the majority have mild or moderate symptoms, while a minority develop acute watery diarrhoea with severe dehydration. This can lead to death if left untreated.

History
During the 19th century, cholera spread across the world from its original reservoir in the Ganges delta in India. Six subsequent pandemics killed millions of people across all continents. The current (seventh) pandemic started in South Asia in 1961, reached Africa in 1971 and the Americas in 1991. Cholera is now endemic in many countries.

Vibrio cholerae strains
There are many serogroups of V. cholerae, but only two – O1 and O139 – cause outbreaks. V. cholerae O1 has caused all recent outbreaks. V. cholerae O139 – first identified in Bangladesh in 1992 – caused outbreaks in the past, but recently has only been identified in sporadic cases. It has never been identified outside Asia. There is no difference in the illness caused by the two serogroups.

Epidemiology, risk factors, and disease burden
Cholera can be endemic or epidemic. A cholera-endemic area is an area where confirmed cholera cases were detected during the last 3 years with evidence of local transmission (meaning the cases are not imported from elsewhere). A cholera outbreak/epidemic can occur in both endemic countries and in countries where cholera does not regularly occur.

In cholera endemic countries an outbreak can be seasonal or sporadic and represents a greater than expected number of cases. In a country where cholera does not regularly occur, an outbreak is defined by the occurrence of at least 1 confirmed case of cholera with evidence of local transmission in an area where there is not usually cholera.

Cholera transmission is closely linked to inadequate access to clean water and sanitation facilities. Typical at-risk areas include peri-urban slums, and camps for internally displaced persons or refugees, where minimum requirements of clean water and sanitation are not been met.

The consequences of a humanitarian crisis – such as disruption of water and sanitation systems, or the displacement of populations to inadequate and overcrowded camps – can increase the risk of cholera transmission, should the bacteria be present or introduced. Uninfected dead bodies have never been reported as the source of epidemics.

The number of cholera cases reported to WHO has continued to be high over the last few years. During 2020 323 369 cases, 857 deaths were notified from 24 countries 3. The discrepancy between these figures and the estimated burden of the disease is due many cases not being recorded due to limitations in surveillance systems and fear of impact on trade and tourism.

Prevention and control
A multifaceted approach is key to control cholera, and to reduce deaths. A combination of surveillance, water, sanitation and hygiene, social mobilisation, treatment, and oral cholera vaccines are used.

Dzvukamanja Scores Fastest Goal Of Season

Terrence Dzvukamanja netted his fastest goal of the season in Orlando Pirates win over TS Galaxy on Sunday.

Dzvukamanja headed home a corner kick as early as in the 2nd minute to open the scoring.

The header became his fastest goal of the campaign and added to his five other strikes – also headers – that were scored in the previous rounds from January.- Soccer24 News

Shandirwa Steals Show

CAPS United fan Richard Sande was arguably the best dressed surpoter, of the reported 18 500 who attended Sunday’s Harare derby between the Green Machine and crosstown rivals Dynamos at the National Sports Stadium.

Clad in a white shirt, green hat and a green pair of shorts, Sande stole the limelight with his school uniform like attire.

He had a ‘manual’ which read “7 million ways to beat Dynamos.” He held it confidently and was very sure Lloyd Chitembwe’s charges would emerge victorious, understandably so considering their brilliant start to the 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.

But in the end, DeMbare had one way to beat CAPS —a midfield masterclass by the trio of Donald Mudadi, Junior Makunike and Tanaka Shandirwa.

Of the three, it is Shandirwa who has been the most consistent for DeMbare this season.

The 23-year-old former Yadah man covered every blade of grass and was one of the most outstanding players, as Dynamos spoiled CAPS’ party with a 2-0 victory, courtesy of first half goals from Mudadi and Jayden Bakari.

Kante, as the ginger-haired midfielder is now affectionately-known in the blue half of the capital due to his resemblance as well as similar energy levels to Chelsea N’Golo Kanté, is definitely a player to look out for this season.- Soccer24 News

Mnangagwa Gold Runner Performs Rituals

By-Emmerson Mnangagwa’s gold front-man, Pedzisai “Scott” Sakupwanya, on Sunday, performed traditional rituals to ostensibly appease the spirits of several artisanal miners who perished at his Redwing gold mine in Penhalonga, Manicaland province.
The rituals were held at the mine with Sakupwanya’s company, Better Brands, funding the traditional ceremony.
A truckload of traditional beer brewed two weeks ago, was consumed at the ceremony, where a catering service company was hired to feed hundreds of people who attended the event, among them traditional leaders, Zanu PF bigwigs and artisanal miners.
This comes after government recently allowed the mine to resume operations after it was shut down by the Environmental Management Agency in January this year over safety concerns.
Sakupwanya is a key Zanu PF member and is expected to finance the ruling party’s election campaign this year.
He has also been previously pictured with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House.
Civic groups from Manicaland claimed that more than 100 artisanal miners have died at Redwing Mine since 2020, but NewsDay could not independently verify the claims.
Since the mine reopened in March, there have been reports of new deaths which reportedly prompted Sakupwanya to initiate the Sunday cleansing ceremony following advice from the area’s traditional leadership.
Mutasa South legislator Misheck Mugadza (Zanu PF) confirmed yesterday that he was part of the gathering.
“Yes, we had a traditional ceremony for various reasons. There were traditional leaders and we were also celebrating the coming in of a new chief, (but) we were cleansing the area because of the deaths that have been recorded at the mine. It’s obvious that the company financed the ceremony because they are the ones who are operating at the mine,” he said.
Mugadza applauded Better Brands for the initiative.
Better Brands mine manager Alexio Guyo also confirmed the ceremony, but directed all questions about the event to the company’s general manager Cuthbert Chitima.
“I was not there, l am in Beatrice, but you can get in touch with Cuthbert Chitima,” he said.
Chitima’s phone was not being answered yesterday.
Penhalonga Youth Development Trust director Clinton Masanga said Better Brands conducted the rituals using traditional snuff and some rice that was sprinkled in the mineshafts to supposedly appease the spirits of departed artisanal miners.
“It was a traditional and ritual ceremony done at once. Traditional snuff and some grains of rice were thrown in the claims where some artisanal miners reportedly died,” Masanga said.
“The fact that they did the traditional ceremony or rituals is clear indication that they are aware of the deaths that have occurred at the mine.”
Masanga, however, said it was difficult to determine whether Redwing Mine had satisfied the safety demands made by Ema.
“However, it is important to note that traditional ceremonies and mining operations should not compromise safety measures and environmental regulations. The poor management of the mine by Better Brands Mining Company is a cause for concern and it is essential that the company improves (workers’ safety at the mine),” he said.
Masanga added: “If the traditional ceremony is conducted (and the mining company) violates the restrictions set by Ema, it could potentially lead to negative consequences such as harm to the environment or danger to the workers.”
Centre for Research and Development director James Mupfumi, who has in the past been vocal over mine deaths in Penhalonga, weighed in saying conducting a traditional ceremony was not enough to guarantee miners’ safety.
“I think the company was seeking to address the issue of mine deaths which have not stopped even after the company was closed,” he said. Newsday

Gaffa Targeted Again, Warned Against Playing Ibotso

By-THe regime has warned the celebrated Zimdancehall singer, Winky D, against performing his song Ibotso.

The song is on his latest offering, “Eureka Eureka,” and it discusses corruption and suffering in Zimbabwe, which has caused discomfort and controversy among government circles.

Winky D, made this revelation during his performance at the Fill UP Queens Sports Club, Byo Shut Down concert in Bulawayo.

This was his first public appearance in a month since his performance was cut short by police during a show at Damview Chikwanha Blue Rest Grill and Bat in Chitungwiza. He shouted in the midst of his performance:

Let me talk, I have been cautioned, I have been warned and they said if you sing that particular song there is going to be disaster; so, I do not want disaster here.

I want people to have fun, I want people to party, I want to see every gaffer in full enjoyment, every gaffer who is here to party. Can I see a signal early Sunday morning, I want every gaffer in the place, Maninja.

They want to arrest the music, they must leave the music to flow like the water in the river, they don’t have to control my playlist, I have to play what I want, I have to play what you want.

Winky D performed his old hit song “Gafa Party” at the concert, which includes the lyrics “Handiite Politics But Handibude MuParty Ini: I don’t do politics, but I will never leave the party.

After the show, he thanked his fans for their support in a post on his Facebook page.

Winky D’s album “Eureka Eureka,” which addresses social injustice, economic struggles, and government corruption in Zimbabwe, has caused friction between him and the authorities. Since its release, he has faced online harassment from supporters of the ruling Zanu PF party. Some ZANU PF-affiliated groups have even called for a ban on Winky D’s music, alleging that it causes “alarm and despondency” among the youth. Despite this, Winky D has continued to speak out against social issues in his music. He recently won the International Reggae & World Music Awards for Best African Dancehall Entertainer for the second time.

Shandirwa Is DeMbare’s Own Kanté

About Cholera

Gas Leak Safety Tips

Woman Arrested For Stabbing Stranger In Her House

Staff Reporter

By A Correspondent| A 25-year-old woman was arrested on Monday after allegedly stabbing an unknown man to death when she found him in her house.

According to the police, the woman returned to her house at around 01:25 and found it open.

Her house was reportedly dark due to a lack of electricity.

As she entered, she allegedly heard a man’s voice telling her that he was waiting for her. The man then allegedly grabbed her from behind and they started wrestling.

The woman then allegedly got hold of a knife and stabbed the man twice in his lower ribs. The man ran out of her house and fell to the ground, unconscious.

The scene was attended to by police officers and ambulance officials. The nurses declared the man dead at the scene. He was identified as Fans Dawids (35), and his body was taken to Keetmanshoop Police Mortuary for an autopsy to be conducted.

Police investigations continue.

Irrigation Schemes Should Promote Local Food Systems

While irrigation is touted as a solution to food and nutrition security under a changing climate, it may not be helpful if irrigation schemes set up in African dry regions focus on producing exotic or external commodities. In dry regions where small grains and small livestock grow naturally, it is common to see African governments, development organizations and the private sector promoting external crops like potatoes, sugar cane, wheat and lucerne at the expense of local food systems.
Image description
Instead of becoming a fall-back position for African communities, irrigation systems are undermining local food systems. A typical example is in an area called Nyanyadzi of Chimanimani district where more than 10 irrigation schemes produce a narrow range of commodities like sugar bean, wheat, tomatoes, onion, green mealies and, to a limited extent, cabbage. These crops are not linked to indigenous food systems but grown mostly for external markets. The main question is to what extent are Nyanyadzi communities benefitting from abundant irrigation schemes? Based on the notion of plot holders, the schemes are occupied by less than 10% of the total population. Besides producing very few crops for household consumption, the plot holders grow mostly for urban markets to meet basic needs. During the rainfall season, production is very low in these irrigation schemes because farmers go back to farm on the dry land where there is a whole indigenous food basket comprising legumes, small grains and others. Plot holders only return to irrigation schemes during winter when there is no production on the lands and in individual gardens. How do we ensure irrigation schemes do not suppress local food systems? From what is happening on the ground, it might be correct to conclude that most irrigation schemes are not really for community development or rural employment investments. When natural resources like soil and water are used to produce a few crops in a community that has more than 90% of its food basket comprising indigenous food produced through natural agroecological (AE) practices, irrigation systems become the entry point for replacing indigenous food systems.Instead of irrigation schemes being used as avenues for replacing indigenous food, why not use the irrigation schemes to enhance community food systems like groundnuts (fresh groundnuts all- year-round), pumpkins, muboora, munyemba and others? Why not propagate seedlings of indigenous fruits like matohwe and other foods in irrigation schemes? This would be a perfect approach in decolonizing local food systems through irrigation development. Ideally, irrigation schemes located in dry regions should be research hubs for diverse varieties of indigenous food and fruits for setting up huge plantations of indigenous food. That way, it becomes easy to commercialize indigenous varieties and foods including approaches for certifying indigenous seed using indigenous knowledge. With enough political will, several ways can be adapted to boost agroecology using irrigation systems within communities. When irrigation is used to produce indigenous pastures and grasses, it becomes a perfect example of decolonizing livestock production and diversify food baskets.Toward genuine avenues for building community resilienceClimate disasters like cyclones and droughts are indicating that building resilience should start with identifying key components of a community including what people have lost in their food systems which, if rebuilt, can prevent communities from depending on outsiders for everything. This can start with examining local food systems and how communities have been managing natural resources. It is also critical to look at community culture and tradition – how much of culture and tradition has been lost that was part of their community resilience? For instance, what was the role of traditional leadership that has been lost through infiltration by colonial systems. There is a visible trend where African indigenous vegetables, fruits, field crops and livestock have not received significant support to boast production, processing and value addition. Such support, given to exotic food, can be in terms of appropriate technology, research and documentation which is a key part of resilience and sustenance in a changing climate. On the contrary, most African countries are supporting colonial food systems that are replacing indigenous and local food systems driven by indigenous knowledge systems. This is in spite of overwhelming evidence showing that colonial food systems are not competitive enough to be a source of resilience since production is driven by outside factors like purchased seed with a cost component including inputs like fertilizer that are imported – exposing the whole community to dependence. Communities cannot be resilient when depending on external inputs.Need for new early warning systemsGiven the increasingly fluid nature of climatic conditions and natural regions, there is definite need for African governments to invest in tracking these trends within communities through systems that can capture all knowledges within communities including indigenous knowledge systems. In addition to discussing issues that matter to their context, communities should be capacitated to answer questions like what have you seen changing in the past five years? This should reveal new agroecological boundaries, helping to reveal the extent to which climate change is re-defining community boundaries and natural features of the community. With the current ubiquitous technology like Google maps, communities should be able to develop systems that can automatically define community natural features and how they are impacting community livelihood boundaries in line with climate conditions that emerge as those changes take place. Such fluid changes have direct impact on food systems and community resilience. Many African communities are realizing the importance of embracing crops that are resistant to shocks like legumes and others. Communities whose commercial mindsets compel them to focus on mono-crops tend to focus on a few commercial crops but expose them to shocks. Emphasis should be on crops that can grow naturally within a community instead of bringing external crops. While local people know what is ideal for their situation, they often lack resources to promote what they believe to be the right thing. For instance, they know that poultry manure, murakwani, indigenous fruits and poultry are the best. However, due to lack of resources, they end up grudgingly accepting programs promoted by NGOs, government and private sector including narrow government extension models which provide partial solutions. Authentic transformation will happen when African governments start appreciating and acknowledging that the colonial systems that they are promoting are destroying local food systems and food sovereignty. Things that have been requested by local communities for in many years like appropriate technology and need for a market have not received meaningful attention. Government should start by becoming a market for indigenous food through national hospitals, training centres, prison services and others large departments that consume a lot of food daily. Ultimately, local food should be an integral component of food as part of building genuine resilience.
