Chiwenga Warns Drug Dealers

CHECHECHE-Vice- President Constantino Chiwenga has said legislation to deal with drug peddlers is being crafted and warned those dealing with drugs that they will be given stiff penalties.

He was speaking at National Fitness and Wellness Festival at Checheche High School yesterday.

He said legislation to deal with peddlers is being crafted to cut the drugsupply chain.

“Drug peddling must cease. It has destroyed our youths, who are the future generation. Who will run the nation when we are gone?

“Our youths are taking drugs. Our young girls are getting married before their time. This will affect the development of our nation,” he said.
He said heavy sentences are going to be given to those found selling drugs.

Chiwenga added that Government has zero tolerance for drugs and referenced Robert Nyemudzo’s case.

“We don’t want to kill our generation. Anyone found dealing in drugs must be arrested, and we are coming up with a law to that effect. Someone came in through the window. We said no you can’t stand for Chipinge people because of drugs. He was given two years and the case is still continuing. Whoever is doing that must be jailed. Those found drunk must be jailed,” he said.- Masvingo Mirror

War Vets Confront Mnangagwa

By-Former liberation war fighters have warned the ruling Zanu PF party to stop using them as “graders”.

They said Zanu PF uses them to campaign toward general elections and later dump them.

War veterans have campaigned for Zanu PF, especially in rural areas where they have been accused of violently targetting opposition supporters.

Speaking during a war veterans interactive meeting held in Lupane on Thursday, Veterans of the Liberation Struggle board chairperson Gibson Mashingaidze said they want the Government to improve their welfare.

Mashingaize said:

There is a slogan that says the party commands the government, why does the party not command civil servants to look into our affairs?

We have Members of Parliament (MPs) who are looking for us during campaigns, we do not want to be used as graders.

MPs should pass laws that speak to our needs instead of being silent only to emerge asking for votes.

If we had powers, we could recall some of these MPs that are not speaking about our plight in Parliament.

ZANU PF war veterans secretary, Douglas Mahiya, claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has done a lot to improve the welfare of war veterans. He said:

Laws have been enacted but implementation remains a challenge that is why we have invited several stakeholders from the government so that we get answers to these issues.

In 1997, war veterans pressured the Government to pay them $50 000 in gratuities and other benefits for their role in the liberation struggle.

However, the Zimbabwe dollar later plunged following the unbudgeted pay-outs.

Here are some of the demands made by war veterans in recent years:

  1. University degrees
  2. Tax rebates for their suppliers
  3. Pension
  4. Medical and dental care
  5. Educational Assistance
  6. Funeral Assistance
  7. Gratuity
  8. Clear categorization of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle members
  9. Tax and Duty exemption
  10. Quota system in Parliament and all government institutions and agencies
  11. Automatic promotion of serving veterans of the liberation struggle in State institutions
  12. Diplomatic passports
  13. Bravery medals and new identity cards
  14. Compensation of war victims and veterans of the liberation struggle living with disabilities

Church Leader Up For Fraud

By- Ezekiel Masiyandima, the leader of a Chitungwiza Pentecostal church, has been arrested for fraud.

Masiyandima, 44, leads Ebenezer Prophetic Ministries.

Early this year, he was in the spotlight for dumping his wife of 18 years for a 21-year-old congregant.

He was expected to appear in court over the weekend and initially had a case opened at St Mary’s Police Station under CR Number 65/05/23.
He now faces a fraud charge.
Masiyandima stands accused of having sold a non-existent stand in Epworth to a congregant for US$2 500. According to police sources, the transaction took place in St Mary’s.
When the complainant visited the site in Epworth, he found out that someone had already built a structure at the stand.
This led to the arrest of the man of the cloth.
Earlier this year, Masiyandima crashed into the spotlight when he opted out of his marriage to Portia Chiwanga, 38.
They had been together for 18 years.
He went on to marry a younger woman, Melania Madamombe, 21, a development which divided the church.
Masiyandima argued his first wife was accusing him of witchcraft as the couple had lost three of their five children in mysterious circumstances.
This, according to allegations by the former wife, happened after the prophet had visited T.B Joshua’s SCOAN in Nigeria.
He is alleged to have also made a visit to see the late Nigerian prophet’s wife, according to Chiwanga, who went on to label her estranged husband a womaniser and abuser.

His new single, Handidi, which is already trending, was the game-changer.

“Winning is awesome. All my five horses were special and deserving. I am so grateful to them, myself, and the team,” said Swanson.

Dindingwe, Down to Business and Raining Again were second, third and fourth.

On Sunday, seventy-five (75) Pakame High School learners narrowly escaped death when their hired Inter Africa bus was involved in an accident along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway.

The bus was travelling from Harare to the school which is located in Shurugwi, Midlands Province.

ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, adding that all pupils escaped unhurt, but some lost property in the fire.

Three Mineral Resources Discovered In Muzarabani

By-Australia-listed Invictus Energy Limited has confirmed the presence of light oil, gas condensate and helium at its Cabora Bassa project in Muzarabani, Zimbabwe.
Invictus Managing Director Scott Macmillan said that mud gas analysis from the Mukuyu-1 well drilled last year had proved the presence of hydrocarbons in multiple reservoir pay zones. He said:
Results from the mudgas compositional analysis definitively proves the presence of hydrocarbons in multiple reservoir pay zones at Mukuyu-1 consistent with the wireline log interpretation, fluorescence, and elevated mudgas readings.
Analysis shows the presence of light oil and rich natural gas-condensate, with condensate gas ratios estimated at between 30 to 135 barrels per million cubic feet.
The analysed samples demonstrate a consistent, high-quality natural gas composition, exhibiting low inert content, containing less than 1% CO2.
Furthermore, the presence of helium gas in commercial concentrations in multiple reservoir units is comparable with global helium-producing fields and provides an additional high-value by-product.
We are extremely pleased with the results from the mudgas analysis which confirm our geological modelling of the Cabora Bassa Basin and the presence of both light oil and gas condensate provides us with confidence as we prepare for the drilling of Mukuyu-2 in Q3 this year.
Success at Mukuyu-2 and confirmation of a significant discovery will further unlock the value of our material portfolio and basin master position in the Cabora Bassa Basin.
Helium is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, and inert monatomic gas used as a cooling medium for nuclear reactors and in cryogenics (the study of low-temperature phenomena).

Mwonzora Loses Concourt Election Challenge

By- MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has lost a court application seeking the court to invalidate the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC)’s delimitation of electoral boundaries.
In dismissing the court application, a full Constitutional Court led by Chief Justice Luke Malaba said the court could not stop a constitutional process.
Mwonzora argued that ZEC had broken the law during the delimitation process.
He wanted the court to declare the delimitation invalid, order ZEC to redo the process, and compel President Emmerson Mnangagwa only to proclaim an election date after a new delimitation report.
Mnangagwa recently said he will proclaim the election date before the end of this month.
Had Mwonzora Constitutional Court granted Mwonzora’s application, the 2023 general elections would have had to be postponed.
This is because there must be six months between delimitation and the election.
Malaba argued that as a presidential candidate, Mwonzora is not hurt by constituency boundaries.
He also said Mwonzora was not properly before the court, querying why the MDC-T leader had not submitted sworn affidavits from potential candidates who would have been prejudiced by the delimitation.
Speaking to reporters outside court, Mwonzora said the court made a political judgment. He said:
Their (judges’) argument is that they do not have jurisdiction, in other words, that they don’t have the power to hear the case. In our respective view, the court has made a political judgment.
The ruling means that the path is now clear for the President to proclaim an election date.
The general elections must be held between 26 July and 26 August, to comply with Constitutional regulations that the election must come not more than 30 days after the expiry period of the current Parliament.
Current laws also stipulate that a proclamation can only be made 44-88 days before the election date.

Street Man Kills Chitungwiza Woman

A Chitungwiza woman, who was murdered on her way to an interview, was buried over the weekend. Dephine William (28), whose body was found in Msasa after going missing since April 17, was laid to rest at Zororo Cemetery last week on Friday.

She was allegedly killed by Dickson (19), a man of no fixed abode, and stays on the streets. Dephine’s body was found in a decomposing state.

Her sister, Amalia, told H-Metro: “It is still unbelievable that Dephine is no longer here, we indeed buried her at Zororo on Friday but the memories are still fresh and hurting.

“She failed to celebrate her planned birthday party, which was supposed to be held on 22 April.

She was killed by a street person who took her phone, which was later sold to Kudakwashe Kufanyaringwa, who gave the phone to her mother, Magret Kufanyaringwa, as a birthday present.

Dephine left a four-year-old child and we are not expecting any compensation from Dickson’s family, we just need justice to prevail.

“I would like to thank all the relevant authorities who helped us to locate Dephine.”

Form 1 Pupil Still Missing 1 Month Later

By A Correspondent- On March 1, Mitchell Gwashavanhu, a Form One student, left home for school.

She hasn’t been seen since.

The mysterious disappearance of the Transparency College student has left her family devastated and they are demanding answers from the school authorities.

The case was reported under RRB 5470833 at Chitungwiza Police Station.

The 14-year-old was intelligent, her uncle and guardian, Gwashavanhu, revealed.

She was a very good kid, very hard-working in class, at home and in sports. Very well behaved kid with a bright future.

“Very intelligent and I was grooming her academically and she was already proving to be a top student in her class, getting top marks in tests during the term.

“And, in athletics, she was number 1, she told me she would go all the way to national events as she was confident of winning at zone, district and provincial levels, especially for 100m,” he said.

Gwashavanhu said on the day she disappeared, she was at training.

One wonders what happened after training on Wednesday, March 1, when they were readying for district competitions on March 3.

“Is it then a coincidence that she was kidnapped on that very March 1 day and she subsequently missed the district event?

“Which student replaced her in the senior relay team when she went missing?

“Which student lost her place in that team when this Form One kid got that place and who are the friends of that student who lost their place?

“Were they with Mitchell on that very last day when she trained and disappeared? So are the students who attended sports not suspects given the threats she was complaining about from those senior students?

“Why were the school authorities not addressing those concerns and when the child went missing, why did they hide the truth?”

He insists the school authorities should shed more light.

“Mitchell was under my custody and I was sending her to school at Transparency College.

“My brother and I are devastated by the circumstances under which our child disappeared in a clear case of suspected kidnapping at the college.

“Shamwari Yevanasikana also got a report from us, we hope they are doing something about this case to help in the Mitchell case.

“I am fighting for my child’s rights and justice as a parent, I am not fighting or hating anyone.

“It’s about a child’s life and safety, it’s not about me hating anyone.

“Other kids confirmed they left sports around 12 noon, so taking into account walking time and some normal delays she should have arrived home by 2:30pm.

“I asked if sports students had been dismissed and what time and the sad story began unfolding with each hour passing with no news until late.

“I slept with no information from the school as they ignored calls and failed to answer WhatsApp messages in their inbox and in their group when we were trying to get information from the school.”

Many versions have been coming through.

“She returned to school according to information available but the kids seemed too afraid to tell the real story.

“According to information available, after Simbiso’s shop, Mitchell proceeded to school riding a bicycle belonging to someone.

“At home she has a bicycle that she likes to ride.

“She was playing with this bicycle at the sports venue also. Another boy (name withheld) revealed that the owner of the bicycle followed Mitchell to the school to collect his bicycle.

“So that’s proof that Mitchell went to school around 1pm that day but these kids were clearly told to hide this fact and were told what to say by the school authorities.

“We slept without that information on that day, not even sure what the school position was on whether the child attended school or didn’t.

“Does that information need a school meeting to be confirmed by the school in a situation where a child didn’t report home from 3pm till late and the guardian alerted the school authorities as early as 3 pm and throughout until 8 pm?

“Other parents confirmed that night, via their own children, that Mitchell was well and attended school training on that day but the school authorities deliberately and strategically, for unknown reasons, failed to simply to confirm that the child attended school.”

No comment was obtained from the school authorities.

Former Finance Ministry Official Nabbed Over Drugs

By A Correspondent- A former principal accountant in the Finance and Economic Development ministry, Tonderai Musekiwa has been arrested for allegedly dealing in dangerous drugs.

Musekiwa (50) appeared at the Harare Magistrate’s Court on Friday last week after being arrested while in possession of cocaine and ecstasy drugs valued at $2 700 000.

He appeared before magistrate Ngoni Nduna who remanded him in custody to today for bail ruling.

Through his lawyer Mutsa Chivandire, Musekiwa challenged the possession of the drugs, saying they were planted in his vehicle.

However, the State represented by Deputy Prosecutor-General Michael Reza opposed bail saying drugs were harming communities and drug dealers must be dealt with differently to those who buy them.

The suspect and the seized drugs were taken to Forensic Science Laboratory where presumptive tests on suspected cocaine was carried out in the presence of Musekiwa and tested positive to cocaine.

The suspected cocaine and ecstasy tablets were also weighed in the presence of Musekiwa and recorded a weight of approximately 18g and 135g, respectively, with an estimated street values of $1,8 million and $902 000.

Allegations are that on May 3 this year, at around 3pm, detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics received information that Musekiwa was supplying cocaine in greater Harare using a blue mini cooper vehicle, registration numbers AFV 7970.

On the same date, the detectives spotted the said motor vehicle parked at the new passport offices along Leopold Takawira Road.

The detectives approached the vehicle and found Musekiwa seated behind the steering wheel.

They introduced themselves and requested to search him, leading to the recovery and seizure of a sachet with 410 tablets of suspected ecstasy under the passenger seat.

Gokwe Man Who Killed Stepson Fined 17 Cattle

By A Correspondent- A Gokwe man was forced to pay a herd of 17 cattle as compensation for allegedly ‘killing’ his step son six years ago in a bid to enrich himself through rituals.

Misheck Muchiwa from Gokwe South, under Chief Nemangwe, was ordered to pay the cattle for killing Proud in 2017.

At the time of his death, Proud had a prǝgnɑnt wife who is now living with her parents.

The matter came to light last month after his young brother’s five-year-old child manifested, exposing the heinous act, that Misheck killed Proud.

Misheck’s younger brother Pardon confirmed that the family held a meeting after the child manifested.

It is true that my brother killed Proud for money,” he said.

It is alleged that the five-year-old child was living in the Nembudziya area when he manifested.

The child’s parents then drove him to Misheck’s house in Nemangwe.

“Upon arrival the child pointed at Muchiwa and told him that ‘he killed Proud for money rituals with his second wife (Proud’s mother),’” said Misheck’s son, Misheck Junior.

“My father did not argue with the child but he admitted to the accusations and the child demanded 11 cattle from him as compensation and he paid.”

One of the neighbours said they were surprised by what Misheck did to try and become rich.

“The whole village was left devastated by this incident since we never imagined that he would do such evil things,” said a neighbour.

Misheck visited Proud’s biological father and he was ordered to pay six cows so that he would exhume his son’s remains.

“He paid the cattle and Proud’s father came and took soil from his grave,” said Chiedza, a member of the family.

Asked whether they reported the case to the police and why Misheck was still a free man, one of his neighbours said:

“We saw police after Muchiwa paid the compensation, we never got a glimpse of them and we don’t know what they said,” she said.

Reports said a witchdoctor was invited to cleanse the homestead.

Efforts to get a comment from Misheck were futile.

H-Metro Photographer Robbed

A senior photojournalist with H-Metro, Takawira Dapi was on Wednesday evening robbed of his cash and valuables at gunpoint.

Dapi told H-Metro that he boarded a Mercedes Benz along Charter Road on his way home to Glen Norah. Dapi said:

I just left Herald House around 11 PM going to where I normally get my transport along Charter Road.

When I got there, I saw some private cars which were loading but there was no car going to Glen Norah.

Within minutes, a Mercedes Benz arrived calling for Glen Norah passengers and it was being loaded by touts.

Immediately after I got in, someone entered using the other door.

There were now four of us and the car left.

On our way, after the flyover, as we were approaching ZBC, the passenger in the front seat suddenly pointed a gun at me. He demanded money by force.

He also ordered me to look downwards before the other ‘passenger,’ who was sitting next to me, forced me to lie down.

They asked if I had seen them and they also asked me the type of their car but I had to think quickly.

I lied that it was a Toyota Wish and that I didn’t see the number plates, they asked my name and I told them.

We moved to a place where there was no noise, the car stopped, and they searched everywhere and took everything, except my BP tablets, and glasses.

One of the guys ordered me out of the car, I was then dropped at St Mary’s School in Mbare.

I was then accompanied by a Good Samaritan in Mbare where I met a female dancehall artist Ninja Lispy who took me to Star FM.

I lost my phone and cash to these thieves.

Police have repeatedly urged members of the public to desist from boarding pirate taxis (mushikashika) or using their vehicles as pirate taxis as they risk being robbed

The bus was heading to Chirombo Stadium in Rusitu where the Masvingo based outfit was playing Rusitu Tigers in an Eastern Region Soccer League match.

The driver was also part of the injured.

The injured were rushed to Chipinge District Hospital.

When Mirror Sport arrived at the scene few minutes after the accident some people were still trapped under the bus in the river while some were laying on the sideways of the road.

One of the survivors told Mirror Sport that the driver was speeding.

“We were in the bust together with the players. The bus developed a fault at Tanganda and some players were put in the kombi so that they won’t miss the game. The bus was fixed and we continued with our journey. When we were near the bridge, the driver lost control of the vehicle and he plunged into the river. If he was not speeding, the accident was not going to happen,” he said.

A villager Grace Moyo who was coming from church said the bus was speeding.

“ The bus passed us in the road but it was speeding. We were even shocked at the speed it was traveling at. Within few minutes we saw it plunging into the river. We rushed as villagers to try and assist the people who were in the bus,” she said.

Jafari Mpande of Chipinge who was going for the Rusitu Tigers match said together with a team of 10 men managed to pull four people trapped under the bus and helped several people who were injured.

“We were traveling to Rusitu to watch Rusitu Tigers play when we saw the accident. I rushed out to help and ten more men joined me .It was very sad because some didn’t want to assist but they were just standing and taking pictures. We managed to pull out two men and a lady who were still alive but trapped under the bus. The fire brigade then managed to retrieve one dead body. We carried the injured and put them in cars before they were taken to Chipinge District Hospital,” he said.

Chipinge District Hospital acting District Medical Officer Doctor Ozzimo Matekenya said the hospital received about 90 people.

“We are working very hard to make sure that everyone is okey. We are also doing chest tests and stitching those who have been injured. As a hospital, we have received close to 90 people and four are badly injured we have since transferred them to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital for further management,” said Matekenya. —Masvingo Mirror

Backwalled Mnangagwa Says Zim Close To Joining UK’s Commonwealth

Zimbabwe is edging closer to rejoining the Commonwealth as the bloc warms up to the Second Republic’s re-engagement and engagement drive with President Mnangagwa using his visit to the United Kingdom to attend the coronation of King Charles III, to engage the Commonwealth along with the British Government, businesspeople and others.

Backwalled Mnangagwa at the coronation ceremony

Mnangagwa returned home yesterday and was received at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Zanu-PF Vice-President and Second Secretary Cde Kembo Mohadi, Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, service chiefs and other senior Government officials.

Mnangagwa said during his engagements with both the Commonwealth and the British government, he saw positive signals.

“We were able to meet the British Minister of African Affairs and Development (Andrew Mitchell). We had a very long chat and the indications are that there is a spirit of co-operation developing between Harare and London, which we will continue to pursue,” he said.

In London, the President also took time to engage with the Commonwealth and from the meetings he had with the bloc’s Secretary General Baroness Patricia Scotland and Commonwealth chairperson Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Zimbabwe is on the cusp of re-joining the group as part of its pillar foreign policy of engagement and re-engagement.

“Last night (Saturday) I had a meeting with the Secretary General of the Commonwealth (Lady Scotland). There was a Commonwealth meeting, which was held because most of the members of the Commonwealth had come for the coronation, so they met as Commonwealth.

“Thereafter I met with the Secretary-General to discuss issues about our application. I also met the Chairman of the Commonwealth President Paul Kagame; the indications are that so far, the signals are positive,” he said.

Last year, a Commonwealth delegation led by the organisation’s Assistant Secretary-General, Professor Luis Franceschi, visited Zimbabwe and acknowledged that Harare had made progress in laying the desired foundation for re-admittance into the association mainly made up of former British colonies.

Under the leadership of President Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe is vigorously engaging and re-engaging all nations, and tremendous progress has been made on that, as shown by the warm welcome the President got from British royalty between Friday and Saturday.

“We were invited as a country to attend the coronation of King Charles III and we accepted. We were over 100 Heads of State from Africa, some monarchies from European countries and of course Latin America.

“On the first day, they gave a reception with Heads of State; it was an opportunity to interact with the British monarchy. On the second day it was actually the coronation at the Westminster Abbey, it went very smoothly,” said the President.

Thus, Zimbabwe’s engagement and re-engagement efforts continue to bear fruit as evidenced by among other things, the invitation to the United Kingdom for the first time in over two decades, the partial removal of illegal sanctions by the European Union, development assistance by the European Development Fund, and the invitation of Harare for the first time to the US-Africa summit last year, among others.

In London, Mnangagwa also took time to market Zimbabwe to businesspeople who expressed interest to invest in Zimbabwe.

At a meeting with investors, the President outlined the vast opportunities in sectors of the economy such as mining, infrastructure development, agriculture and ICT.

In an interview after meeting with the business community, Minister of Finance and Economic Development Professor Mthuli Ncube, who was accompanying the President, said there is huge appetite to invest in Zimbabwe by both British investors and Zimbabweans living in the diaspora.

“His Excellency was able to lead us into a discussion with investors here in the UK. The investors come from a variety of sectors; mining, agro-processing technology sector, financial services and infrastructure, right across the board, it was really pleasing to see this spread of investors.

“His Excellency, with his team, which included myself, were able to explain to investors the various opportunities that Zimbabwe offers across the sectors and also the incentives that are available to investors. His Excellency was able to make it known that indeed Zimbabwe is open for business, from wherever they come and that investors from the UK are indeed welcome to Zimbabwe and we notice that they are keen to invest in Zimbabwe and this is really pleasing,” said Prof Ncube.

Mnangagwa was also accompanied by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Ambassador Frederick Shava, Deputy Chief Secretary Mr George Charamba, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Mr Nick Mangwana.

More About Cholera

Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. Cholera remains a global threat to public health and an indicator of inequity and lack of social development.

Symptoms
Cholera is an extremely virulent disease that can cause severe acute watery diarrhoea. It takes between 12 hours and 5 days for a person to show symptoms after ingesting contaminated food or water (2). Cholera affects both children and adults and can kill within hours if untreated.

Most people infected with V. cholerae do not develop any symptoms, although the bacteria are present in their faeces for 1-10 days after infection and are shed back into the environment, potentially infecting other people.

Among people who develop symptoms, the majority have mild or moderate symptoms, while a minority develop acute watery diarrhoea with severe dehydration. This can lead to death if left untreated.

History
During the 19th century, cholera spread across the world from its original reservoir in the Ganges delta in India. Six subsequent pandemics killed millions of people across all continents. The current (seventh) pandemic started in South Asia in 1961, reached Africa in 1971 and the Americas in 1991. Cholera is now endemic in many countries.

Vibrio cholerae strains
There are many serogroups of V. cholerae, but only two – O1 and O139 – cause outbreaks. V. cholerae O1 has caused all recent outbreaks. V. cholerae O139 – first identified in Bangladesh in 1992 – caused outbreaks in the past, but recently has only been identified in sporadic cases. It has never been identified outside Asia. There is no difference in the illness caused by the two serogroups.

Epidemiology, risk factors, and disease burden
Cholera can be endemic or epidemic. A cholera-endemic area is an area where confirmed cholera cases were detected during the last 3 years with evidence of local transmission (meaning the cases are not imported from elsewhere). A cholera outbreak/epidemic can occur in both endemic countries and in countries where cholera does not regularly occur.

In cholera endemic countries an outbreak can be seasonal or sporadic and represents a greater than expected number of cases. In a country where cholera does not regularly occur, an outbreak is defined by the occurrence of at least 1 confirmed case of cholera with evidence of local transmission in an area where there is not usually cholera.

Cholera transmission is closely linked to inadequate access to clean water and sanitation facilities. Typical at-risk areas include peri-urban slums, and camps for internally displaced persons or refugees, where minimum requirements of clean water and sanitation are not been met.

The consequences of a humanitarian crisis – such as disruption of water and sanitation systems, or the displacement of populations to inadequate and overcrowded camps – can increase the risk of cholera transmission, should the bacteria be present or introduced. Uninfected dead bodies have never been reported as the source of epidemics.

The number of cholera cases reported to WHO has continued to be high over the last few years. During 2020 323 369 cases, 857 deaths were notified from 24 countries 3. The discrepancy between these figures and the estimated burden of the disease is due many cases not being recorded due to limitations in surveillance systems and fear of impact on trade and tourism.

Prevention and control
A multifaceted approach is key to control cholera, and to reduce deaths. A combination of surveillance, water, sanitation and hygiene, social mobilisation, treatment, and oral cholera vaccines are used.

Darikwa Team In Turmoil

Tendayi Darikwa and his Wigan Athletic teammates have refused to train ahead of their final Championship match of the season against Rotherham on Monday.

According to Sky News, a group of players, whose contracts are ending next month, are protesting over unpaid wages after the club Chiefs decided to pay those with deals lasting beyond this campaign.

Darikwa, who is the Latics’ skipper, is part of the players that have terms expiring in June.

The British broadcaster added that aggrieved stars have been told that they will only receive their money on Tuesday next week.

However, the players are doubting if the balance will be paid since they are leaving the club next month.

This is the fifth time in this season that the team has received wages late and the club was hit with a three-point deduction in March.

Wigan have already been relegated from the Championship after one season in the second tier, having earned a promotion as League One champions at the end of the 2021/22 term.- Soccer24 News

Munetsi Praised

Zimbabwe international Marshall Munetsi has been hailed as a player with exceptional athletic qualities by his club Stade de Reims.

The Mabvuku-bred Warriors star extended his stay at the French Ligue 1 side to 2027, today.

Munetsi has been one of the most consistent players for Reims since he joined them from Soweto giants Orlando Pirates in 2019.

The 26-year-old has scored six goals for the William Still-coached side this season, one better than his total of five the whole of last season.

“The tireless midfielder is extending his adventure at Stade de Reims for another year. He will be at Stade de Reims until 2027!,” reads a statement from the club.

“One kilometer on foot wears out your shoes. Not for Marshall Munetsi. Known for his exceptional athletic qualities, he is again this year the second outfield player to have traveled the greatest distance in a Ligue 1 Uber Eats match (13.7 km)!

“Marshall has been able, over the seasons, to expand his technical palette and sharpen his sense of goal. The midfielder has also scored 6 goals and 3 assists this season in the league. Proof of his versatility and reliability – he who was once used as a central defender by David Guion and Oscar Garcia – is now brilliantly illustrated as an attacking midfielder, or high point of a midfielder at 3.

“Associated with Azor Matusiwa and Dion Lopy with whom he forms one of the most complementary midfielders in Ligue 1 Uber Eats, Marshy (as his teammates call him) is perhaps having his most successful season in Champagne.

“His sense of sacrifice, his communicative generosity and his exemplarity on and off the pitch make him one of the leaders of the Reims locker room.”

Munetsi has also been nominated for the 2023 Marc-Vivien Foé award —a prestigious accolade which rewards the best African player in the French Ligue 1.- Soccer24 News

43 Nearly Killed In Horror Bus Accident

43 people (including school kids) on board an Inter Africa bus that caught fire yesterday near Battlefields between Kwekwe and Kadoma narrowly avoided death.

Since the main goal was to free everyone, the majority of the bags were set on fire.

A stampede of people trying to escape the blazing bus resulted in some injuries.

Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, a spokeswoman for the Midlands Provincial police, verified the event, which happened around noon.

He said it was still too early to estimate the worth of the things lost.

“We can confirm the fire accident involving a bus this afternoon (yesterday) where the bus was reduced to a shell, with passengers losing their luggage.

“But we are still to get details,” he said.

Mr Paradzai Makombe, who was on the bus, said no one salvaged anything from the bus.

“It was so sudden that we only managed to stampede out of the bus, leaving everything behind.

“Only a few used the door, the majority of people jumped through windows, with some sustaining minor burns,” he said.

Another passenger, Mr Lovemore Rutsata, said the fire started from the engine of the bus.

“The driver applied emergency brakes and we all started to rush out of the bus. No one knows what caused the fire, but the bus was reduced to a shell as several efforts to try and put out the fire failed,” he said.- state media

Girl In Trouble For Refusing To Sleep With Zanu PF Heavyweight

MASVINGO – The Minister of State responsible for Agricultural Colleges, Water Resources, and Irrigation Development, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Davis Marapira, has allegedly brought a National University of Science and Technology (NUST) female student to the brink of mental breakdown through persistent love messages, threats and invitations to join him at hotels.

Marapira assisted the 19-year-old brilliant but disadvantaged first year Biotechnology student with fees since she was in Form 5 at Zimuto High School in Masvingo.

The Mirror called Marapira for a comment yesterday, but he hung up once he got the gist of the issue. He later sent a text message to say that he was in a meeting.

Marapira allegedly started pestering and threatening the girl in 2021 when she was in Form 6.

The girl, who is also a top performing artist with various national awards to her credit confirmed that the messages in the hands of The Mirror were indeed exchanged between her and the Minister. She also accused Marapira of sending an article about a man who sponsored his lover through university education and later killed her for dumping him.

“The Minister asks me to see him at night, invites me to his hotel room whenever he is in Bulawayo and the latest being at the 2023 ZITF last week. He gets so angry if I refuse his advances. He makes long calls and persistently sends messages which I politely told him I was uncomfortable with. He says he has all along been waiting for me to turn 18 and become an adult.

“He threatens to stop paying my fees at registration time or just before I sit for exams and this is the time where he knows I am most vulnerable.

“I am confused and frightened that the Minister may do the unimaginable and kill me. I come from a less priviledged family, and when he offered to sponsor my education, I thought he was a Good Samaritan, a leader and a father who was genuine about my future.

“I never imagined that he was going to ask for sex or love from me. If this is the condition for the scholarship am ready to drop out of school and stay at home. I thank him for all the support that he gave me, but if this is what he is doing to all the girl-children he helps then this is tragic,” said the student.

The girl’s mother also confirmed the matter to The Mirror and said she once approached a woman from Zanu PF Women’s League to ask the Minister to stop his advances. This did not help as Marapira allegedly told the woman that colleges and universities are fertile hunting grounds for girls.

The mother later phoned the Minister, but Marapira was allegedly evasive… Masvingo Mirror

Mnangagwa Bunks Own London Meetings With Loyal ZANU PF Members, As ED’s Own Niece Is Banned From Embassy

By ZimEye Correspondent | There was drama at the Zim Embassy yesterday when President Emmerson Mnangagwa bunked his own meeting at the embassy where over 500 predominantly ZANU PF members had their travel money wasted when upon arriving at the London embassy they found no trace of the Head Of State.

A letter written inviting Zimbabweans to meet the president

This was despite the tight security around the building. There were over 30 security officers led by Auxillia Mnangagwa’s brother and convicted armed robber, Paradzayi Kutyauripo.

ZANU PF members gathered to met host who never turns up

The senior government officials who attended the non event were Mnangagwa’s girlfriend, Virginia Mabhiza (Perm Sec for Justice), and George Charamba, who is the Presidential Spokesperson.

Govt Spokesman Nick Mangwana spoke briefly for 3 minutes, and left and the Ambassador Christian Katsande later announced indicating he was unsure what has happened, ZimEye reveals.

There were business people attending and foreign dignitaries there expecting Mnangagwa’s custom of meeting Zimbabweans. But he has come to the UK twice and avoided meeting his own supporters.

The London embassy meeting was the second in a roll listed for his coronation diaspora engagements, the first which was at Holiday Inn Luton Airport.

In US Mnangagwa met the American diaspora. In Davos he met local Zimbabweans, in South Africa he held an expats meeting. But in UK he has even avoided the govt premises, the London embassy.

Cancelling the event, Mnangagwa chose to meet white businessmen one of whom humiliated him (Mnangagwa) for being too accessible, always poking his head out to investors, that is, doing the job of junior immigration clerks, in the wake of the Al Jazeera Investivative Unit’s #GoldMafia documentary.

Andrew Cartwright was on video on Sunday criticising President Emmerson Mnangagwa over how too easily accessible he is, comments which come in the wake of the embarrassing Goldmafia documentary that show how Mnangagwa almost sold a part of Victoria Falls to undercover journalists from Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit.

Said Cartwright in part, “one thing which puts Zimbabwe above other competing investment destinations is the President’s accessibility.

“There are negatives to that, but are outweighed by positives…,” he said.

ZANU PF members in UK are complaining over why Mnangagwa snubbed their own meetings (two of them) “yet we are the ones who for a long time have campaigned for sanctions to be removed,” as one told ZimEye on condition of anonymity.

The ambassador Christian Katsande did not respond to a request for comment.

While the reasons were not clear, sources told ZimEye, Mnangagwa is afraid of being humiliated among people who feel harrassed by him over the incarceration and persecution of legislator Job Sikhala who was arrested after the murder of his own client, the late Moreblessing Ali, who got killed by Mnangagwa’s supporters, the murderers who received police protection. In July 2019, Mnangagwa’s then Foreign Affairs Minister Sibusiso Moyo was sprayed water by opposition protesters after insulting victims of the nation’s second coup which happened just after elections on 1 Aug 2018. It was feared that after the broadcasting of the GoldMafia documentary, Mnangagwa would receive worse humiliation.

Coincidentally, Mnangagwa’s own niece Heather Mudhari, the Honorary Consul for Scotland was blocked from entering the embassy meeting when she arrived, reasons which were still to be known at the time of writing.

Zimstat Says Extreme Poverty Now 42%

By A Correspondent- The rate of extreme poverty in Zimbabwe fell to 42 percent in 2022, from 43 percent in 2021.

This was said by the Zimbabwe Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) on Friday.

The latest figures follow the conclusion of the high-frequency telephone survey, known as the Rapid-Poverty Income Consumption and Expenditure Surveys (PICES) conducted by ZIMSTAT between December 2022 and January 2023.

According to the survey, the proportion of the country’s population facing severe food insecurity fell from 27 percent in July 2020 to 9 percent during the December 2022-January 2023 period. ZIMSTAT said:

In general, food insecurity falls as the country receives good and timely rains.

Zimbabwe’s extreme poverty levels have been gradually falling after peaking at 49 percent at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.

The high levels of poverty in Zimbabwe can be attributed to various factors which include hyperinflation, currency devaluation, and lack of foreign investment due to poor economic policies, chaotic land reform, drought, and climate change, as well as the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

ZETDC Restores Prepaid Vending System

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) has said the prepaid vending system has been restored and customers can now use the platform to buy electricity tokens.

Earlier, ZETDC, a subsidiary of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), had said the system would be down from the 5th to the 6th of May due to scheduled maintenance. It said:

This notice serves to advise all Valued Clients on the unavailability of the prepaid electricity token purchase system from 5 May 2023 at 1630 hours to 6 May 2023 at 2400 hours. This is to allow for major system maintenance on the prepaid vending system.

Clients are therefore advised to make arrangements to purchase sufficient electricity tokens to sustain them during the service disruption period.

In a public notice issued on Saturday night, ZETDC said the prepaid vending system has been restored. Said ZETDC:

Good evening, our valued clients nationwide. Kindly take note, the prepaid vending system has been restored, you can now purchase your electricity tokens through the usual vending platforms.

Some ZESA customers have experienced challenges when buying electricity tokens.

The problems encountered include delays in receiving tokens, incorrect token codes, unavailability of tokens and poor customer service.

“The Ghetto Has No Secrets”

By A Correspondent- The bus ride to town was always full of drama. It was unusual to find a new face among the passengers.

The mini buses driven mostly by semi demented young men were always an option in case one failed to catch the Zupco bus on time. Most of the mini bus drivers were always high on weed and partook hard substances which made them reckless on the roads.

Some of them would drive dangerously like daredevils through red robots and stop signs. And if there was an amplifier, the music would damage the eardrums permanently. I am not sure as to who told Africans that you can only enjoy music when it is blaring loudest?

It was therefore, little wonder that for some of us, the Zupco bus became the next best thing to safe public transport despite the gully-like potholes on some of the roads.

Our driver was always the same white-haired old chap except for weekends when he was off duty. It was surprising that after all this time, I still did not know his name. One odd thing about the driver is that he was always chewing something.

He reminded me of a cow chewing cud, the jaws always grinding up and down.

It so happened that on this particular day, I boarded the bus in quite a jovial mood. And as usual I took my favourite seat right at the back of the bus by the window. Mabhatiri took the other corner and then Mai John, a very chubby woman, squeezed next to me.

She almost squashed me against the window, restricting the free circulation of air. Her cheap perfume almost suffocated me. As the bus filled up, we were joined by three other passengers to make us six at the back, packed like fresh kapenta.

The seats in front of us filled up very fast. I saw Rasta taking his familiar seat just behind the driver.

“Driver we are late, can we go now?” That was Sister Florence. She was always late and complained bitterly all the way to town. She would start on a tirade as to how life was unfair to her and that since her husband had died, no man had as good as looked at her. And now she had to take care of her three children, all on her own. She was supposed to take the mini buses which drove recklessly faster. But for one reason or the other, she always found herself on the bus. Brother James, a well known devout Christian came and occupied the seat just in front of me. Sometimes Brother James took to preaching in the bus and he was also known to do some street preaching. He was joined by Mai Sekai, one of the biggest gosssipers in the ghetto. She worked for an Indian family as a maid. I had never met the Indian family but I knew what they are, ate, drank and all about their culture and religion.

There was quite some noise which was coming from the passengers in the front row. However my attention was hooked to Brother James’ android phone. I could not help it as I could see that he was busy chatting with someone on WhatsApp. He was oblivious to everyone.

“I am not the father of your prǝgnancy,” he typed.

“You are the only man I slǝpt with all the time,” came the curt response from the other end.

“I don’t believe you. Don’t take me for a fool. You must go for an ab0rtion,” he typed furiously.

By this time, my eyes were almost popping out at this intrigue. I felt sorry for Brother James. Things were looking bleak for him.

“How can you say that? I am not going for an ab0rtion. You are a fake man of God.” The reply came back quickly.

“Stop that, you will destroy my reputation. You know I can’t marry you. We were just playing,” he responded.

At this point, I am not sure what happened. I saw his body stiffen as he suddenly looked backwards. Our eyes met instantly and before I could do anything he suddenly stood up from his seat. The seat had suddenly become too hot for him. “Oh my God!.” He groaned.

He was frightened and nervous. He gave me one last look as he moved forward to the front row. I was ashamed of myself. I had surreptitiously allowed curiosity to get the better of me. Indeed curiosity killed the cat.

I was embarrassed for being caught red handed. He was nervous. I was afraid for him. I hope he was not going to do anything stupid. The ghetto has no secrets. When I looked at Mai John who was sitting next to me, she looked amused. It seemed she was also guilty of reading the chats on Brother James’ phone.

By the time we reached our destination I had already made up my mind to keep this to myself. This had nothing to do with me. When I disembarked from the bus, I was a bit taken aback to see Brother James waiting nervously for me. There was an awkward silence at first. I was quite perplexed.

“I can explain this, please don’t let this out,” he pleaded. I was equally embarrassed for being a peeping Tom. I shrugged my shoulders and quickly moved away. His secret or scandal was safe with me. He had to reckon with Mai John who had also peeped at his chats.

Privacy in the ghetto is like gold which is ever elusive to fortune seekers.

Cross Says ED Is Planning Revenge On Prophet Uebert Angel

By A Correspondent- Eddie Cross said that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is planning revenge against self-styled prophet Uebert Angel for embarrassing him through incriminating comments contained in the “Gold Mafia” documentary aired by Al Jazeera recently, reported ZimLive.

Angel told undercover Al Jazeera journalists that he could use his diplomatic status and links to the First Family to launder over US$1.2 billion on behalf of the journalists who posed as criminals.

The controversial preacher also told the Al Jazeera journalists that Mnangagwa has stashed US$240 million in personal funds for general elections expected this year.

Cross, who is Mnangagwa’s biographer, recently featured in a local podcast interview where he claimed that if Angel, who is based abroad returns to Zimbabwe, will face “consequences.”

Cross, who is a former MDC MP, said Mnangagwa lived up to his moniker, “crocodile”. He said:

Eubert Angel embarrassed the government of Zimbabwe; worse than that, he embarrassed the President and I want to tell you, when that happens there are consequences.

A small cabinet committee has been informed and they have reviewed the programmes; all four and appropriate action has been taken and if I was Eubert, I would stay in the UK, look after his British passport and burn his Zimbabwean passport.

Because he is not coming back. If he comes back here, there will be consequences.

… Crocodiles attack fast and when they do attack, it’s often fatal but you don’t see it coming.

He (Mnangagwa) is not a man who makes his views public.

He is a very reserved man as a matter of fact.

The Government said recently it has frozen the assets of those implicated in the Gold Mafia documentary including Angel.

However, in a statement made through his lawyer Lovemore Madhuku last month, Angel said he was not involved in illegal gold dealings and money laundering.

He said he cooperated with the journalists as part of a covert national intelligence operation investigating if the “investors” were genuine.

Gvt On High Alert Over Illegal Fee Hikes

By A Correspondent- The Government says it is on high alert to ensure that schools desist from illegal fee hikes as the 2023 Second Term commences on 08 May.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education spokesperson Taungana Ndoro on Saturday told State media that Government schools should follow laid-down guidelines on school fees increases. He said:

We will be on high alert, closely monitoring those schools that would have illegally hiked school fees.

Any fees hike outside the stipulated regulations, which include parents’ consent and approval by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, is illegal. Schools should follow the ministry’s policies and regulations.

Meanwhile, parents and guardians with children at private schools have bemoaned the pegging of fees in black market foreign currency exchange rates. Said a concerned parent:

Private schools do as they wish. The fees are pegged in speculative foreign currency black market rates and the attitude is “take it or leave it”.

It’s the second term and surely you can not withdraw your child from the school. Those in private schools are suffering silently unlike those in Government or church-run schools where Government can easily intervene.

The fees are pegged in local currency, but if you ask to pay in US dollars you then realise that the figures in local currency were arrived at using a speculative black market rate, which is higher than the one being used in the streets.

This comes as Falcon College in Esigodini, Matabeleland South has increased school fees for the Second Term to ZWL$11 330 000.

This is approximately equivalent to US$10,600 based on the official exchange rate of 1,070.

The cost of education in Zimbabwe has risen over the years due to a combination of factors, including inflation, currency devaluation, and the high cost of educational resources such as textbooks and school uniforms.

Sikhala Challenges Conviction

By- CCC deputy chair and Zengeza West MP Job Sikhala is planning to appeal his conviction for obstructing or defeating the course of justice by a Harare magistrate.
The charges were in connection with police investigations into the murder of Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Moreblessing Ali in Nyatsime last year.
Last week Harare Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa sentenced Sikhala to six months in prison or a fine of US$600.
Sikhala’s lawyer Harrison Nkomo said they would appeal the conviction at the High Court. Said Nkomo:
We have instructions to file to the High Court. The accused person believes very strongly that he stands a better chance in the High Court on review, a superior court might arrive at a different decision altogether.
Obstructing the course of justice refers to any act that interferes with the administration of justice, such as destroying evidence, making false statements to the police or courts, threatening witnesses, or bribing officials.
Sikhala has been in remand since June 2022 and remains in custody for three other charges that are before the courts.
The CCC vice chairman, who has 12 children, is in high spirits in spite of his conviction, according to Nkomo.
CCC deputy spokesperson Gift Ostallos Siziba told reporters that the opposition party is not happy with Sikhala’s conviction, saying “everyone is in a state of shock.” He added:
This happens as we are entering into the shadows of an election where political leaders are persecuted. Most of our leaders are in and out of the courts for different concocted political charges.
Sikhala’s conviction comes days after the leader of the opposition Transform Zimbabwe party Jacob Ngarivhume was sentenced to an effective three years in jail for incitement to public violence.

British Businessman Criticises Mnangagwa Over GOLDMAFIA Easy Access

By Farai D Hove | A British businessman, Andrew Cartwright was on video on Sunday criticising President Emmerson Mnangagwa over how too easily accessible he is, comments which come in the wake of the embarrassing Goldmafia documentary that show how Mnangagwa almost sold a part of Victoria Falls to undercover journalists from Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit.

Said Cartwright in part, “one thing which puts Zimbabwe above other competing investment destinations is the President’s accessibility.

“There are negatives to that, but are outweighed by positives…”

Mnangagwa is in UK where he attended Prince Charles’ coronation on Saturday.

Mudzi Gold Miner In Bid To Overturn Supreme Court Ruling

A Mudzi-based gold mining company has approached the Constitutional Court seeking to overturn a recent ruling made against it by the Supreme Court after describing it as a sham to property rights.

A recent judgement favoured the respondent, businessman Prosper Machekera as the owner of Radnor 58 resulting in the company approaching the ConCourt citing a litany of loopholes in the handling of the case.

In its chamber application for leave to appeal filed at the ConCourt, Milmath Security Private Limited represented by its director Mathias Madziwanzira said the Supreme Court order violated the right to a fair hearing among other reasons.

“The basic of the application is that on March 10, 2023, the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe handed down an order which violates the applicant’s fundamental rights and freedoms namely, the right to property, the right to a fair hearing and the right to equal protection and benefit of the law,” read the court papers.

“The judgment upholds a High Court judgment which deprives the applicant of its property, namely gold claims, for no reason.

“The High Court judgment also reviews the forfeiture of the first respondent’s base mineral claims, which took place in 2007 in the absence of an application for review and in violation of the right to a fair hearing.”

The disputed gold claims that fall under Radnor 58 are located in the gold-rich area of Makaha in Mudzi, Mashonaland East province.

The provincial mining commissioner, Mines minister Winston Chitando, permanent secretary and chief mining commissioner were cited as respondents in this case that has been hogging the limelight for years.

“The Supreme Court completely ignored the applicant’s grounds of appeal and the evidence before it and resolved the matter on the basis of a ground of appeal formulated by it,” read the court papers.

“Consequently, it did not hear the applicant and thus violated its right to a fair hearing.

“The High Court granted first respondent relief in respect of property that is not referred to in any of first respondent’s papers, which relief was also inconsistent with the averments made in the founding affidavit.

“In so doing, the High Court infringed the applicant’s fundamental rights, particularly the right to a fair hearing and to the equal protection and benefit of the law.

“By upholding such decision, the Supreme Court equally violated provisions of the constitution.”

In the court papers, Milmath Security Private Limited argued that the judgment didn’t address the issue of mining coordinates in respect of the three mining conversion blocks, which were awarded in the High Court judgment and confirmed by the Supreme Court, and yet these three mining blocks are located some three kilometres away from the disputed location as defined by the undisputed coordinates on court records.

In his opposing affidavit dated April 20, Machekera said the disputed gold claims belong to him as ruled by the courts.

-Newsday

“I am the prior holder of mining rights since 2005. I never lost those rights, and applicant cannot lay a valid claim to same,” he said.

“The applicant simply does not agree with these by the court a quo and the High Court.”

In his answering affidavit, Madziwanzira insisted that the courts granted Machekera the gold claims that were forfeited.

Mnangagwa’s Minister Says Sanctions No Excuse For Failure

National Housing minister Daniel Garwe yesterday said sanctions were no excuse for failure to develop the country.

Zanu PF has been quick to blame sanctions for the country’s socio-economic crisis.

Targeted sanctions were first imposed on the country at the turn of the millennium over human rights violations and farm invasions.

Garwe, who commissioned 26 housing units at the NMB Bank’s Reoville Estate in Harare, said Zimbabwe can still achieve its developmental targets despite targeted sanctions imposed by the West.

“Let’s not continue to cry about sanctions or focus much on their impact. They will pass. Out of sanctions, Zimbabwe must develop. The countries that imposed them require what we have naturally which they don’t have. So, let’s take advantage of that,” he said.

NMB funded the construction of the housing units.

Garwe said government has an ambitious target of constructing one million houses by 2030.

“We want to develop smart cities like what is happening in South Africa between Pretoria and Johannesburg. Midrand is an example of a smart city. We must decongest Harare,” he said.

Ahead of the 2018 general election, Zanu PF made a pledge to build 1,5 million homes in the five-year period leading up to 2023.

The ruling party has failed to fulfil the promise.

Upmarket School Pegs Second Term Fees At Staggering ZWL$11 Million

Upmarket Falcon College has pegged its second term fees at a staggering US$10,588.79 just as University of Zimbabwe (UZ) students celebrate a High Court judgement barring the institution from hiking their fees to US$467.

A notice released by the school on April 26 reveals parents and guardians will have to part with ZW$11,330,000 which translates to US$10,588.79 at the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s (RBZ) inter-bank rate or US$5,665 at the popular black market rate.

Despite efforts to defend it by Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube, Zimbabwe’s local currency has devalued at an alarming rate since its re-introduction by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.

The notice, signed by Board of Governors Chairman Andrew Marchussen and Headmaster Dave van Wyk blames Zimbabwe’s waning economy for the hike.

“It is absolutely necessary if we are to continue to not just survive but thrive in this economy,” it reads.

The eSigodini school’s alumni includes former Chevrons captain Heath Streak, fellow cricketer Meluleki Nkala, Charles Knaggs who is a Colonel in the British army and former European Parliament member Robert Jackson.

The school sits on 2,000 hectares of what was once Bushtick gold mine in Matabeleland South.

It boasts of a kilometre long airstrip, a golf range and 810 hectares of a nature reserve and wilderness area.

Sports and clubs at the facility include fishing, mountain climbing, karate, photography and investment; most of which are not at ordinary schools across the country.

Notorious Robbers Linked To 25 Cases Arrested

Police in Masvingo have arrested two notorious armed robbers linked to 25 cases recorded in the province.

Nelson Matsvange (44) and Frank Tirivani (36) committed the crimes between March 2022 and May 2023 in the province.

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday said Matsvange was arrested on May 1 at village 13 Crown Range in Zaka after CCTV footage linked him to a case of armed robbery which occurred at Musvovi business centre in Renco.

“The suspect implicated two other suspects who are still at large and Tirivani, leading to his arrest at Ringirayi village, Zaka,” Nyathi said.

“The arrest led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle which was hidden in a cave in Chivamba area, Zaka, with a magazine of 31 live rounds of ammunition, five cellphones, an HP laptop, a satchel, two machetes, a comforter blanket and US$50 cash.”

They face 25 charges of armed robbery, including one of unlawful entry and theft which occurred at Manjirenji Game Park, Chiredzi in March 2022 where the firearm was stolen.

“Police implore business owners to enhance security systems at business premises. Meanwhile, armed robbery syndicates are warned that the long arm of the law will catch up with them as police crack teams are on high alert to ensure that the law takes its course,” Nyathi said.

Majority Of Zimbabweans Dump Mangudya’s Zim Dollar

A majority of citizens have dumped the Zimbabwean dollar with 97% of transactions for basic commodities being conducted in United States dollars, a World Bank official said yesterday.

World Bank senior economist Dhiraj Sharma said the local currency was “rapidly losing value”.

Sharma was presenting the findings on the poverty, income, consumption and expenditure surveys (PICES) conducted between July 2020 and January 2023 through telephone interviews by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat), in partnership with the World Bank and United Nations Children’s Fund.

Nine rounds of the PICES survey were conducted between July 2020 and January 2023.

“One thing that the survey started to track on was the use of foreign currency on domestic transactions,” he said.

“So overall, we see, to a larger extent, other currencies are being used almost exclusively. People use the Zimbabwe dollar for transactions for about less than 3% of the transactions. And this is for five key food items which are maize meal, cooking oil, rice, beef and bread.”

Prices of basic commodities have been skyrocketing, with the local currency on a free fall.

Some goods are now being exclusively sold in United States dollars.

The parallel market rate of the United States dollar against the local currency spiralled to $2 700 while the official rate stands at $1 097.

Sharma said dollarisation was more prevalent in rural areas than in urban areas.

“The US$ is being used for almost two-thirds of the US dollar or the South African rand for transactions, for 9% and the Zimbabwe dollar for 23%,” he said.

“The use of foreign currency is more widespread in rural areas, which is also a novel finding. Among the five basic food items, the use of foreign currency was higher in some than others, for example cooking oil and rice.

“But overall, this shows the extent to which people are using alternative currencies because the local currencies cannot function properly as stores of value and medium of exchange.”

Government has resisted growing calls to redollarise. President Emmerson Mnangagwa reintroduced the local currency in 2019 after a decade of dollarisation.

Buyanga Hires Zuma’s Lawyer In Freedom Bid

Former South African president Jacob Zuma’s lawyer Michael Hulley has joined Zimbabwean businessman Frank Buyanga’s legal team, as he fights for his freedom from jail.

Buyanga, who has been in prison since November last year, will be back in court later this month when his trial over alleged immigration violations in that country commences.

Hulley’s role in the case emerged this week when the Hamilton Foundation, which Buyanga chairs, issued a statement demanding that the South African Police Services (SAPS) retracts allegations that the businessman intended to escape from a Johannesburg Prison last month. On April 16, the SAPS issued a statement saying a detective constable had been arrested on charges of defeating the ends of justice after trying to allegedly book out the Zimbabwean businessman from prison. This prompted his lawyers to write to the police demanding a retraction, saying Buyanga was afforded no opportunity to be interviewed by the SAPS.

“This is reckless and premature behaviour from SAPS to place this inferred accusation on Mr Buyanga without any proper and lawful investigations prior to publishing this information. It must be noted that at the time of this alleged incident, Mr Buyanga was present at the legal consulting rooms of the prison with his legal representative, Mr Michael Hulley,” reads the letter from Nardus Grove Attorneys.

Hulley was Zuma’s attorney and represented him for several years and was also one of the former president’s closest confidantes.

In the letter, the attorneys said the SAPS should have approached Buyanga in the presence of Hulley to afford him the opportunity to give a right of reply.

“SAPS decided to play the unlikely role of the media to inform the public in a manner not congruent to the press code and failed to investigate — a role which is mandated and bestowed upon them by legislation. The media’s role overshadowed SAPS’ proper role to afford the Audi Alterum Partum benefit to Mr Buyanga,” the letter said.

UK Vows To Take Mnangagwa To Task Over Rights Abuses

The United Kingdom (UK) has said it will take President Emmerson Mnangagwa to task over the worsening human rights situation in the country during his visit for King Charles III’s coronation.

Mnangagwa arrived in the UK yesterday ahead of the coronation ceremony today following an invitation from the British government.

However, rights activists criticised UK for inviting Mnangagwa despite rising cases of alleged human rights abuses in the country, and weaponising the law against opposition members.

British MP Andrew Mitchell, who is the Minister for Development and Africa, said the UK was concerned with the rampant corruption and abuse of human rights in Zimbabwe.

“President Mnangagwa was invited to the King’s Coronation through a process agreed between the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and the Royal Household,” he said in a letter dated May 4, which was shared on Twitter.

“We regularly raise our concerns over human rights and the need for political reform in all official interactions with the President and his ministers. Our conversations in the margins if Corronation will allow us to do the same.”

He was responding to Navendu Mishra another MP who had written to the country’s Foreign Secretary demanding to know why the government had invited Mnangagwa to the coronation.

Mnangagwa’s government has been under scrutiny locally and internationally over human rights abuses that include arbitrary arrests and pre-trial detention of opposition politicians.

According to presidential spokesperson George Charamba, Mnangagwa met with former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair soon after arriving in UK yesterday.

Mnangagwa also met Mitchell and the two discussed bilateral issues. He later met some British businesspeople in London.

Zanu PF In Turmoil Before Polls

ZANU PF winning and losing candidates have been urged to unite to ensure a resounding victory for the party in the forthcoming general elections.

Addressing hundreds of party supporters at an inter-district meeting in Gweru this Thursday, ZANU PF Midlands Province Secretary for Security Owen Ncube urged party cadres to put behind the primary elections and unite for the good of the revolutionary party.

“We want to address ZANU PF cadres not individuals aligned to particular individuals. ZANU PF cadres believe in the dictates of the party where when internal processes are over they come back and join hands to campaign for the party.

“Cdes this is a very serious issue. All internal processes are over. What is left is for us to campaign for President Mnangagwa as well as all the winning candidates be it in local authorities and parliamentary candidates” said Ncube.

“Why would you want to keep on clinging to the past, no the ZANU PF cadres are saying it’s over. What we want is to see that you move together with the winning candidates campaigning together. Those who lost and went into hibernation are doing it outside the dictates of the party,” he added.

Ncube urged winning candidates to exercise wisdom and responsibility when utilising party resources allocated to them for campaigns.

“We have seen the President has given us very beautiful cars. These are not cars to take to beerhalls, neither are they cars to carry your girlfriends on joy rides, these are cars to do ZANU PF business.

“We are on serious business and these cars we have been given by President are cars meant to campaign for him and the party and any abuse will not be tolerated,” he said.

The ZANU PF Midlands provincial leadership is conducting a series of inter-district meetings across the province to mobilise party supporters to ensure a shared vision ahead of the general elections expected between July and August this year.- ZBC News

Woman Killed By Husband?- New Details

New details of the Bulawayo Morningside murder case, in which a man is accused of killing his wife in cold blood by stabbing her 34 times with a kitchen knife then crushing her head with a large stone, have come to light.

While his wife, the now-deceased Ms. Aquiline Sadziwa (both pictured), was carrying their infant strapped on her back at the time of the attack, the man, Pascal Dube, perpetrated the horrible murder. Thus, despite being covered in blood, the infant was unharmed. Dube vanished after committing the alleged crime, and he is still on the run.

Dube killed Ms. Sadziwa at her residence at around 9 p.m. on April 22 when the couple was on a legal separation; the cause of her vicious attack is still unknown.

“I have never seen something like that. Even an animal cannot be killed like that. I was told by my wife to go and investigate what was happening after the couple’s child had informed the landlord that Aquiline was being attacked by Dube. When I got there, I found Aquiline lying face down but never assumed she could have died since it was dark.

When I got closer, it became clear to me that she had died and I made a U-turn and headed to my car. I drove to Hillside Police Station and reported the matter,” he said.

Mr Chingonzo said police attended the scene and realised that Dube had targeted body pressure points first as she had stab wounds behind the ears and several deep cuts all over her arms and body.

“There was a large stone next to her body that he had used to crush her head. I wonder what wrong my niece had done to deserve such a brutal killing,” he sobbed. He said had Ms Sadziwa’s son not escaped to the main house, he could have met the same fate as his mother.

Mr Chingonzo made an emotional plea to men to consider returning their wives to their families if their marriages were not working.

“I beg the young men who are here if you feel you cannot live with your partner or wife anymore, rather take her back to her people. Parents, if you hear your daughter complaining of abuse, take her back because one day it will get to this stage. We had to quickly bury her as she was severely injured in the attack. Her eyes had popped out after the head was crushed with the large stone,” he sobbed.

Mr Micheal Sadziwa, father to the deceased could not hold back tears. He said it was sad that the Dube family had not yet spoken to them since the death of his daughter.

“It is cultural that they come and apologise. They haven’t. It is surprising to me that more than two weeks now no one from his (Pascal) family has come to talk to us. What comes to mind is that maybe it was a well-organised thing with his family. Why are they not coming to talk to me and apologise? I want closure. I want to know what crime my daughter committed to deserve such a painful death,” he said.

A neighbour, Mrs Anic Mhiribidi who also attended a local church with the deceased said she was a quiet woman who attended church regularly.

“She attended church with us and was very passionate when it came to singing and dancing. We were discussing with other members of the choir that we would invite her to be part of us but unfortunately we never got the chance to do that,” she said.

Mrs Juliana Magaso, a neighbour also lamented the gruesome crime.

“She was a very open and free spirit person whom we interacted with every time we met in neighbourhood,” she said. The family pleaded to anyone with information that might lead to the arrest of the murderer to assist by reporting to the police.

Mnangagwa Apologist Threatens Disgruntled Zanu PF Candidates

Ndiraya’s Simba Bhora Fall

A section of Simba Bhora fans waited for head coach Tonderai Ndiraya at the exit point, after the Premiership debutants were beaten 0-1 by struggling Cranborne Bullets at the National Sports Stadium on Friday.

Sylvaster Munhira’s solitary first half goal was enough for Nesbert ‘Yabo’ Saruchera’s Bullets to record their first win of the season, to the ire of Simba fans, who also watched the ambitious side lose to GreenFuel at home last week.

Ndiraya, who bemoaned fixture congestion after the defeat to GreenFuel, saw his charges succumb to their 4th defeat of the season and extend their winless run to three matches.

Ndiraya took over from veteran gaffer Authur Tutani, who was the head coach when they won the Northern Region sole ticket to earn promotion to the Premier Soccer League.

Tutani could not coach the Simba ‘Buju’ Ndoro-owned side in the country’s top-flight because he is not a holder of the required CAF A coaching badge.

Despite having experienced players like Partson Jaure, Talent Chawapiwa, Valentine Musarurwa, Ronald Chitiyo, Simba Chinani and Tichaona Chipunza, Ndiraya has failed to match Simba’s preason expectations.

“The team is not playing well, we don’t even know if we can identify the coach’s philosophy. We cannot be losing to teams like Cranborne Bullets considering the players we have,” fumed one Simba fan who asked not to be named.

“He should simply go, before our team gets worse. He is actually lucky that these games are not being played in Shamva, the Shamva community would have besieged him already by now,” added the fan.- Soccer24 News

Beware Of Cholera

The motive behind the murder is yet unknown.

The police officer commanding Beitbridge district, Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo, said the Zimbabwean police had been formally informed of the killing by the South Africans.

“The matter is being investigated by our South African counterparts since it occurred on their side of the border. However, the South African police came to the border post and informed us that they had a murder case of a Zimbabwean national who is only known as Welly who was murdered at the Old Limpopo Bridge.

“The deceased is said to have been murdered by another Zimbabwean national only known as Tinashe”.

Ex- Byo Prosecutor Falls On Hard Times

By A Correspondent- Former prosecutor in charge of Bulawayo regional courts, Patrobs Dube, has fallen on hard times after he was fired by ex-Prosecutor-General Johannes Tomana in 2012.

Dube was dismissed for leading an industrial action against poor working conditions. He is failing to pay R6 747 for the release of his LLB certificate held by the University of South Africa (Unisa) over outstanding fees.

As if that is not enough, Dube has become partially blind.

Dube has now launched a Facebook campaign #SOSPatrobs#HoldMyHand seeking assistance to have his certificate released by Unisa.

#HoldMyHand to help me access my LLB Degree. If wishes were horses … I would by now long have had my LLB Degree results and I would have long registered and become a fully-fledged legal practitioner!!,” Dube posted on Facebook.

He told Southern Eye Weekender that he was struggling to clear outstanding fees of R6 747 which he owed Unisa.

“In 2012, I was unfairly dismissed from my job of public prosecutor by the government of Zimbabwe following a strike by prosecutors which was organised by the Prosecutors Association, of which I was the deputy chair,” Dube said.

“What followed was a long and protracted court and legal battle between the government and me, with me fighting for the vindication of my constitutional rights and, indeed, my life and the government obfuscating and bent on stifling and reducing me to an effigy of sorrow. It is at times like these, with your back against the law, that you reflect and cannot help, but be cynical about modern law which saves us from barbarism, and in its place gives us the barbarism of the law!”

The High Court ordered his reinstatement.

“The court ordered my reinstatement or payment of damages. The Judicial Service Commission applied to the High Court for review. The commission attempted twice to have the Labour Court judgment rescinded and failed on both occasions,” Dube said.

However, he has not been reinstated.

“What must I do now to persuade the powers-that-be to comply with the rule of law? I have lost my employment, my sight and dignity. My family and children’s future are bleak, but why? I ask again, but why?”

Communities Mobilise, Repair Roads

By A Correspondent- Fed up with government inaction, the tenacious villagers of Hope Fountain in Umguza, Matabeleland North province, have joined hands to repair their heavily damaged roads.

The roads in Hope Fountain were hit hard by the recent rains, compounding the woes of the villagers, who feel neglected by the motoring public.

Determined to bring change, the villagers have mobilised through their village committee and are pushing for the restoration of the major roads connecting Hope Fountain with Bulawayo.

These roads have suffered significant damage over the years.

Despite the District Development Fund’s (DDF) mission to provide assistance to resettlement areas, the central government has consistently failed to allocate adequate funding, leaving the area with little to no financial support in recent years.

According to Vusa Sibanda, a member of the village committee, the road works were initiated in 2022.

“Our roads are not in a good shape and very hazardous to users, therefore as a committee, together with the community, we saw a need for us to rise and answer the call,” Sibanda says.

Hope Fountain, previously owned by missionaries, was handed over to its current owners by the United Congregational Church of Southern Africa in 1980.

The area is located near How Mine.

The villagers have mobilised through their village committee and set a deadline of December 2023 to complete the project.

According to sources, on March 31, 2023, the village committee presented a budget to the community for the rehabilitation project.

“The budget, which includes other developments in the area, was well appreciated by the rest of the community. We are positive that all will be well,” says Sibanda.

According to Thokoza Mathe, a resident of Hope Fountain, the community is optimistic that their diligent work and sacrifices will yield positive results, ultimately leading to accessible roads in the area.

“We work together and are confident we will succeed,” Mathe said.

“We will hold meetings that will further enlighten all stakeholders about the benefits of the project while urging community members to participate through providing labour or any other resources needed,” Mathe added.

According to Sibanda, one of the targeted roads runs from the shopping centre through Mthombothemba Primary School to How Mine, with the aim of connecting people to schools, clinics, and facilitating the sale of farm products, thus generating income for the community.

According to the 2023 Zimbabwe Infrastructure Investment Programme report, $3 billion will be allocated to rural road infrastructure, to be implemented through DDF.

Sibanda says one of the project’s shortcomings is that some community members fail to contribute on time, which affects progress.

Additionally, some community members have yet to fully understand the project, which results in low participation rates, Sibanda adds.

“Other villagers delay paying their contributions, causing delays in the development of such programmes. Some feel that the idea is too big for a small community like ours,” says Sibanda.

Fisani Nkomo, a villager with a low income, says she faces difficulties paying her contributions towards the project on time.

This challenge, in turn, makes it hard for her to meet the project demands.

However, Sibanda notes that community members have realised that working together on the project has been a valuable learning experience.

Their collective efforts and perseverance have inspired others to join in.

Moses Dube, a resident and participant in the project, says the committee has reached out to mining companies to collaborate and augment the community’s efforts.

“We wrote a letter to How Mine earlier this year. They have promised to reach out soon. We need machinery and other essential equipment for rehabilitation. Some of the funding will come from local contributions (homestead subscriptions),” Dube says.

Alexander Mhlanga, the ward 1 councillor for Umguza Rural District Council, expressed his support for and happiness with the community project.

Man R_apes, Stabs Ex- lover

By A Correspondent- A 42 year old man from Chiwundura raped and stabbed his ex-girlfriend after she turned down his request to reconcile with him.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident that occurred last week.

Mahoko said the victim, a 20-year-old woman, is battling for life at a hospital in Bulawayo.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirms the arrest of (name withheld) in connection with rape and attempted murder cases which occurred at Maveni village under Chief Gambiza,” he said.

“Reports indicate that at around 2pm, the woman from the same village in Chiwundura went to fetch firewood at a nearby bush in the company of her cousin sister.

“They met (the suspect) who resides in the same village and a misunderstanding arose between them. The suspect withdrew a knife from his pocket and threatened to stab the complainant.”

Mahoko added: “He allegedly raped the complainant before stabbing her with a knife all over the body.”

The woman was later rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital by a well-wisher.

She was later transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo due to the serious nature of her injuries.

Knife Wielding Duo Steal From 82yr Old

By A Correspondent- Two male adults who were wielding knives and a pair of pliers pounced on a Nyanga family, threatened an 82-year-old woman with unspecified action and vanished with US$160.

The incident happened in Sarutani Village under Chief Hata’s area on April 17 at around 8pm.

“The two suspects who were armed with a knife and pliers entered into Mrs Taurai Mushayi’s room as she was sleeping. She was alone. One of the suspects grabbed her by the neck and ordered her to keep quiet.

“They gagged her mouth with a cloth while the other suspect ransacked the house. They took USD160 then disappeared into the darkness,” said Inspector Muzondo.

Police are appealing to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the suspects to contact their nearest police station.

Falcon College Fees Hikes Fees

By A Correspondent- Upmarket Falcon College has pegged its second term fees at a staggering US$10,588.79 just as University of Zimbabwe (UZ) students celebrate a High Court judgement barring the institution from hiking their fees to US$467.

It is absolutely necessary if we are to continue to not just survive but thrive in this economy,” it reads.

Zimbos Dump Local Currency

By A Correspondent- Majority of citizens have dumped the Zimbabwean dollar with 97% of transactions for basic commodities being conducted in United States dollars, a World Bank official said yesterday.

“Zaoga Will Be Divided “: Passion Java

The arrest led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle which was hidden in a cave in Chivamba area, Zaka, with a magazine of 31 live rounds of ammunition, five cellphones, an HP laptop, a satchel, two machetes, a comforter blanket and US$50 cash.”

hey face 25 charges of armed robbery, including one of unlawful entry and theft which occurred at Manjirenji Game Park, Chiredzi in March 2022 where the firearm was stolen.

Harare Woman Robbed

By A Correspondent- A Harare woman who boarded a private vehicle at BP Service Station in Mutare got robbed of US$3 220, a cellphone and clothes by armed robbers who had offered her a ride.

The five suspects, including a woman, dumped the victim, Ms Diana Pamire, in a bush near Nyazura before driving off.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Norbert Muzondo confirmed the incident which happened at around 8:30am.

Pamire (30) boarded a silver Honda CRV at BP Service Station intending to go to Harare. She had a purse and a bag which contained cash, clothes and other belongings. In the vehicle were four unknown male adults and a woman.

“Pamire seated at the back seat and upon approaching Bridge Store in Nyazura, one of the accused who was seated next to her ordered her to surrender her purse which contained, among other things, a cellphone and US$220. Out of fear she complied.

“The driver turned off the main road and drove for about 200 metres in a dust road and stopped. The accused persons pushed the lady out of the car and left her stranded in the bush.

“They drove away with the bags containing a total of US$3 220 and clothes. Pamire reported the matter to Nyazura police. No arrests were made and nothing has been recovered,” said Inspector Muzondo.

Minister Davis Marapira In Forced Love Scandal

By- A Cabinet minister is forcing a university student to fall in love with him because he assisted her in getting a university place.

Minister of State responsible for Agricultural Colleges, Water Resources, and Irrigation Development, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Davis Marapira, has allegedly brought a National University of Science and Technology (NUST) female student to the brink of mental breakdown through persistent love messages, threats and invitations to join him at hotels.

The mother later phoned the Minister, but Marapira was allegedly evasive.
“Like any other mother, I get worried when anyone threatens the future of my child. I approached a woman in the Women’s League and she told me that the Minister said kumaUniversity ikoko ndiko kwatinotowanira vasikana. I then called the Minister and he said his priorities currently were the elections and looking for school fees for my daughter. He changes the subject each time I call him. Now he ignores my calls,” said the mother.
The girl’s arts mentor who is a teacher said she is shocked by Marapira’s alleged predatory tendencies towards the girl.
“The Minister knew the girl as a little primary school girl. I am shocked that this was his intention. I think there is certainly something wrong in Marapira’s head,” said the mentor. Masvingo Mirror

Mavaza: A History of British Coronations

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | Defined simply, the word “coronation” refers to a ceremony in which a king or a queen is crowned. The tradition traces its roots to antiquity, when Egyptian Pharaohs, Biblical kings and Gallic chiefs alike were inaugurated as rulers in public ceremonies. During the Middle Ages, coronations took on new religious significance, combining the crowning of monarchs with Christian rites like anointing.

The coronation of Charles III and his wife, Camilla, as king and Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms is to take place on Saturday, 6 May 2023, at Westminster Abbey. Charles ascended to the throne on 8 September 2022, upon the death of his mother, Elizabeth II.
Prince Charles born as Charles Philip Arthur George was born at Buckingham Palace on 14th November 1948 at 9.14pm, weighing 7lbs 6oz. The Prince was christened on 15th December 1948 at Buckingham Palace. Charles became heir apparent (next in line to the throne) at the age of three years old in 1952, and went onto become the longest serving Prince of Wales in 2017. His Majesty was the first heir to see his mother crowned as Sovereign. The King has three siblings, two sons, two step-children, five grandchildren and five step-grandchildren.

His Majesty’s first visit abroad was to Malta, when he was five years old. Since 1969, he has visited 48 Commonwealth countries, many of them on several occasions.

The King was the first heir to the throne to earn a university degree. The King studied archaeology and anthropology in his first year at the University of Cambridge, switching to history for the remainder of his degree. His Majesty also spent a term at the University College of Wales at Aberystwyth (April to June 1969) learning Welsh.

While at school, The King played the piano, trumpet and cello. He continued to play the cello while an undergraduate at Cambridge, performing in a symphony concert by the Trinity College Orchestra on 4th December 1967.

His Majesty obtained his RAF Royal Air Force wings as Flight Lieutenant Wales in August 1971.

The King commanded HMS Bronington in 1976, while serving in the Royal Navy.
His Majesty started charity The Prince’s Trust with his Navy severance pay of just over £7000 in 1976. The charity has now supported over one million young people.
His Majesty was the first member of The Royal Family to successfully complete the Parachute Regiment’s training course, before he was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Regiment in 1977.

In 1980 King Charles visited Zimbabwe on the eve of independence. Many would remember the young Prince Charles listening to a song by Chinx Chingaira. ( Takura Shoko unoda Mambokadzi Mukoma Chale.”

On the eve of his marital problems The King was offered some Zimbabwean medicine to stabilise his family by a Mbare traditional herbs vendor.
The King maintained his good relations with Zimbabwe shaking the hand of president Mugabe at the funeral of the pope in Rome against all protocol which was set by the sanction givers. Because of his love for Afriva The King, as Prince of Wales, was given the title, ‘Keeper of the Cows’, by the Masai in Tanzania in 2011 to recognise his work as a farmer.
In the Pacific Island of Vanuatu, His Majesty was given the title Mal Menaringmanu (High Chief) in 2018.

But what really happens in the coronation. A coronation ceremony for, successively, the monarchs of England and Scotland, Great Britain and the United Kingdom can be traced back more than 1,000 years. Formerly, it was often a necessary stage on an individual’s journey to becoming king or queen. Nowadays, a sovereign succeeds, by law, immediately upon the death of another, although the ceremony remains an important event early in a new reign. Coronation is called the United Kingdom’s central constitutional ritual, and the cornerstone of its political traditions”.

Coronations emerged from a European tradition of increasing church involvement in the state, as well as the need to bring stability to often volatile societies in which several individuals had a claim to the throne. Central to the ceremony is the “unction”, the act of anointing a monarch with holy oil. This signals the conferment of God’s grace upon a ruler. Today, the United Kingdom is the only European monarchy to retain such a ceremony. That for Queen Elizabeth II took place on 2 June 1953.
Although British coronations have at their heart an Anglican service conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey, the ceremony combines not only religion but aspects of the UK’s uncodified constitution and a degree of theatre. Coronations emerged from a European tradition of increasing church involvement in the state, as well as the need to bring stability to often volatile societies in which several individuals had a claim to the throne. Central to the ceremony is the “unction”, the act of anointing a monarch with holy oil.

The king will take the coronation oath. What is the Coronation Oath?
The Coronation Oath, in which the monarch swears to govern the peoples of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth Realms “according to their respective laws and customs” is the only aspect of the ceremony which is required by law. The wording of this oath has constantly evolved to reflect changes to the territorial composition of the UK and the wider Commonwealth.
As it is a state event, a coronation is paid for by the UK Government. Organisation involves ministers, the Royal Household, the Church of England and the Commonwealth Realms. A Privy Council “Coronation Committee” is usually formed to oversee the planning, and its Executive Committee is chaired by the Earl Marshal. This can take several months. A monarch also has significant influence on the form a coronation ceremony takes.
As Prince of Wales, His Majesty became President or Patron of over 800 charities and initiatives in total.
His Majesty is an author. He wrote The Old Man of Lochnagar, based on stories he told his younger brothers growing up. The King has also written books on the natural world and the environment including ‘Harmony’; and ‘Climate Change, a Ladybird Expert Book’.
The kings wife automatically becomes the queen. But the Queen’s husband of the Queen is the one ruling can never be the king. Her majesty Camilla Rosemary Shand was born on 17 July 1947 at King’s College Hospital, London. The Queen Consort’s parents are Major Bruce Middleton Hope Shand and the Hon Rosalind Maud Shand (nee Cubitt).
Her Majesty has personal links to military organisations connected to her father, Major Bruce Shand, who was awarded two military crosses. The Queen Consort has attended many occasions with veterans, serving soldiers and officers of the 9th/12th Lancers with whom her father served. Major Shand also fought with the Desert Rats in the Second World War before being captured during the Battle of El Alamein.
Her Majesty is the eldest of the three Shand children. The Queen Consort has a sister, Annabel Elliot and a brother, Mark Shand, who sadly passed away in 2014.
The King and The Queen Consort married in a civil ceremony at the Guildhall in Windsor on 9th April 2005. This was followed by a Service of Prayer and Dedication at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle.
To the true British the Coronation is a solemn religious service, together with an occasion for celebration and pageantry. The ceremony has retained a similar structure for over a thousand years, and this year’s Coronation is expected to include the same core elements while recognising the spirit of our times. For the last 900 years, the ceremony has taken place at Westminster Abbey, London. Since 1066, the service has almost always been conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.”The Coronation will include many of the ceremonies that were seen in the late Queen’s service, such as the oath, anointing, homage and enthronment.

The president of Zimbabwe, Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa is attending this historic event.

Scott Sakupwanya Performs Rituals At Redwing Gold Mine

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ally Pedzisai “Scott” Sakupwanya has performed traditional rituals to ostensibly appease the spirits of several artisanal miners who perished at his Redwing gold mine in Penhalonga, Manicaland province.

The rituals were held at the mine on Sunday with Sakupwanya’s company, Better Brands, funding the traditional ceremony.

A truckload of traditional beer, brewed two weeks ago, was consumed at the ceremony where a catering service company was hired to feed hundreds of people who attended the event, among them traditional leaders, Zanu-PF bigwigs and artisanal miners.

This comes after government recently allowed the mine to resume operations after it was shut down by the Environmental Management Agency in January this year over safety concerns.

Sakupwanya is a key Zanu-PF member and is expected to finance the ruling party’s election campaign this year.

He has also been previously pictured with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House.

Civic groups from Manicaland claimed that more than 100 artisanal miners have died at Redwing Mine since 2020, but NewsDay could not independently verify the claims.

Since the mine reopened in March, there have been reports of new deaths which reportedly prompted Sakupwanya to initiate the Sunday cleansing ceremony following advice from the area’s traditional leadership.

Mutasa South legislator Misheck Mugadza (Zanu-PF) confirmed yesterday that he was part of the gathering.

“Yes, we had a traditional ceremony for various reasons. There were traditional leaders and we were also celebrating the coming in of a new chief, (but) we were cleansing the area because of the deaths that have been recorded at the mine. It’s obvious that the company financed the ceremony because they are the ones who are operating at the mine,” he said.

Mugadza applauded Better Brands for the initiative.

Better Brands mine manager Alexio Guyo also confirmed the ceremony, but directed all questions about the event to the company’s general manager Cuthbert Chitima.

“I was not there, l am in Beatrice, but you can get in touch with Cuthbert Chitima,” he said.

Chitima’s phone was not being answered yesterday.

Penhalonga Youth Development Trust director Clinton Masanga said Better Brands conducted the rituals using traditional snuff and some rice that was sprinkled in the mineshafts to supposedly appease the spirits of departed artisanal miners.

“It was a traditional and ritual ceremony done at once. Traditional snuff and some grains of rice were thrown in the claims where some artisanal miners reportedly died,” Masanga said.

“The fact that they did the traditional ceremony or rituals is clear indication that they are aware of the deaths that have occurred at the mine.”

Masanga, however, said it was difficult to determine whether Redwing Mine had satisfied the safety demands made by Ema.

“However, it is important to note that traditional ceremonies and mining operations should not compromise safety measures and environmental regulations. The poor management of the mine by Better Brands Mining Company is a cause for concern and it is essential that the company improves (workers’ safety at the mine),” he said.

Masanga added: “If the traditional ceremony is conducted (and the mining company) violates the restrictions set by Ema, it could potentially lead to negative consequences such as harm to the environment or danger to the workers.”

Centre for Research and Development director James Mupfumi, who has in the past been vocal over mine deaths in Penhalonga, weighed in saying conducting a traditional ceremony was not enough to guarantee miners’ safety.

“I think the company was seeking to address the issue of mine deaths which have not stopped even after the company was closed,” he said.

Frank Buyanga Denies Allegations Of Trying To Skip Jail

Troubled Zimbabwe business tycoon, Frank Buyanga has denied attempts to skip jail and has demanded apology and retraction of a South African Police Services (SAPS) statement inferring he colluded with their officer to facilitate his escape.

Buyanga has been languishing in a South African prison since November last year over a slew of accusations, with one relating to a messy child custody wrangle with his former girlfriend.

His arrest in South Africa was at the behest of Zimbabwean authorities who had issued a warrant of arrest against him.

The millionaire businessman was last month mired in a freak prison escape attempt saga after an unnamed police officer was arrested while trying to book him out of prison with no authority.

Nothing was heard of Buyanga’s side of the story in the matter.

South African police proceeded to publish a statement 16 April this year suggesting the businessman could also have planned the escape.

Through his lawyers, Nardus Grove Attorneys, Buyanga has since written SAPS remonstrating over the soiling of his name without even the courtesy of asking him about what he knew about the incident.

Buyanga said the statement was marred with misrepresentations and malice clearly aimed at tarnishing his reputation.

“Mr Buyanga was not afforded any opportunity to be interviewed by the SAPS, who, on their own account, now liken the errant actions of an unnamed police officer with Mr Buyanga after admitting that this officer has no supporting paperwork or just cause to call upon the prison,” he said.

“This is reckless and premature behaviour from SAPS to place this inferred accusation on Mr Buyanga without any proper and lawful investigations prior to publishing this information.”

The lawyers said at the time of the alleged incident, Buyanga was present at the legal consulting rooms of prison with his legal representative identified as Mr Michael Hulley and could be questioned over the incident.

“SAPS decided to play the unlikely role of the media to inform the public in a manner not congruent to the press code and failed to investigate a role which is mandated and bestowed upon them by legislation,” lawyers said, adding that their client has not been approached by the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) and SAPS officials but has been vilified through the media.

Because of the SAPS statement, lawyers said, their client is now at the mercy of a smear campaign by the media which is basing opinions on one side of the story.

Buyanga was also not happy with that the name of the errant police officer has been protected while his has been dragged through the mire.

“Instead, Mr Buyanga who has not appeared in court in Zimbabwe on alleged charges and who was granted bail in the Randburg Court in his extradition matter, is freely and wrongly cited by name and is overtly described as ‘also wanted for kidnapping in his country of origin’.

“SAPS fails to provide the public with the proper factual story and does not give a balanced account of the alleged cases that they are very well aware of that were opened against Mr Buyanga.

“SAPS fails to state that any charge that relates to fraud and contravention of the Immigration Act is alleged and Mr Buyanga has presumption of innocence until the authorities can sustain these false utterances and alleged charges in a court of law.”

He complained that SAPS is treating him as a foreigner when in actual fact, he holds South African particulars.

Buyanga feels there is conspiracy to jeopardise his freedom prospects.

“The investigations should also cover the incident to exclude this as a booking out attempt as an attempt to extort Mr Buyanga and or create an impediment to his attempts to apply for bail, which is his lawful right,” his lawyers said.

Buyanga also accuses Zimbabwean authorities of working in cahoots with SAPS, South African National Prosecuting Authority to unfairly extradite and deny him bail on trumped up immigration charges.

“The media release paints Mr Buyanga in a negative light and seeks to tarnish his image and prejudice him in matters that are sub judice without affording the proper balanced story to be given with regards to the extradition matter and where he was denied bail by Magistrate Davies who made findings against that of Magistrate Thomas, which findings are being applied to the relevant court.

“Therefore, we are instructed to demand, as we hereby do, that your offices retract the article and statements falsely implicating Mr Buyanga on all platforms where this information has been shared including social media.

“We reserve the right to sue for damages,” said the lawyers.

UK, EU Flags Zimbabwe Over Sikhala Detention

The United Kingdom and European Union embassies have raised possible violations on freedom of expression and abuse of the courts in the recent prosecution and conviction of opposition politicians Job Sikhala and Jacob Ngarivhume by Zimbabwean courts.

Sikhala, a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) MP, was convicted and fined US$600 Wednesday for obstructing the course of justice.

The politician, who has endured over 10 months of pre-trial incarceration at Chikurubi, Zimbabwe’s maximum security prison, was charged for his strong sentiments shared in a Twitter video following the killing of party activist Moreblessing Ali in Nyatsime by a Zanu-PF suspect in May last year.

Sikhala, also a lawyer, was hired by Ali’s family to handle legal matters relating to their relative’s misfortune.

Ngarivhume, who is Transform Zimbabwe leader, was also convicted and jailed for an effective three years after he used his Twitter handle to urge citizen protest against high level corruption under the Zanu-PF led administration back in July 2020.

He was placed under remand prison for over a month before his release which followed a lengthy trial leading to his shock imprisonment.

The conviction of the two politicians follows that of CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere who was also found guilty for communicating falsehood when she forwarded a video image of a woman filmed tussling and accusing a uniformed police officer of accidentally striking and killing her baby with a baton stick while enforcing Covid-19 lockdown restrictions in 2021.

It later turned out the claims by the woman were not true.

The pattern of convictions on opposition politicians over alleged crimes that have also been committed by Zanu-PF politicians has been met with disquiet by Western embassies which feel the Zimbabwe administration was persecuting opponents.

Reacting to the convictions, the United Kingdom in Zimbabwe said it had noted the convictions against the opposition politicians.

“The UK notes recent court rulings involving opposition politicians. The rights to freedom of assembly and expression are enshrined in #Zimbabwe‘s constitution. Judicial systems play an important role in independently upholding these rights and guaranteeing due process for all,” said the embassy.

The EU embassy in Zimbabwe raised similar concerns.

“The #EU ?? is closely monitoring the recent court rulings in #Zimbabwe ??convicting opposition politicians.

“Zimbabwe’s constitution ensures citizens’ rights to freedom of expression & peaceful assembly. The judiciary is expected to protect these fundamental rights#HumanRights,” read a tweet from the embassy.

Man Assaults Lover For Denying Him Sex During Menstrual Period

For some men, it’s a no-brainer to consider having sex with their lovers during their menstrual periods as they apparently perceive that time of the month to be a “no sex zone”.

But for others like Peter Zuvarimwe (20) from Kokwa Farm Glendale, Mashonaland province no matter how awkward or uncomfortable it may be when his lover is having a period that doesn’t necessarily mean sex is off the table.

This emerged when Zuvarimwe appeared in court facing charges of assaulting his lover Pauline Mukuramombe (21) as punishment for denying him sex while on her menstrual period.

Zuvarimwe appeared before Concession magistrate Joshua Nembaware charged with physical abuse as defined in Section 4 as read with Section 3 (a) (1) of the Domestic Violence Act Chapter 5:16.

He pleaded not guilty and was remanded to 16 May for trial

For the State, prosecutor Precious Khanye told the court that on 9 April and at around 9pm Zuvarimwe visited his lover Mukuramombe at her place where the two later retired to bed.

It is reported that while in bed Zuvarimwe asked his lover to have sexual intercourse with him and she refused stating that she was on her period.

That however, didn’t go down well with Zuvarimwe who in a fit of rage started insulting his lover while accusing her of having an extra-marital affair.

As if the insult was not enough, Zuvarimwe went on to assault his lover with fists several times and all over the body.

Mukuramombe reportedly sustained a swollen face and painful chest as a result of the attack and was referred to hospital for medical attention.

The matter was reported to the police leading to Zuvarimwe’s arrest.

Byo Man Stalks Ex-Wife, Begs For Reconciliation

A man from Bulawayo who kicked his wife out of their matrimonial home before he also threw her clothes out of the house is now stalking her while also begging her to reconcile with him.

Siphiwe Masuku claimed that whenever her ex-husband meets her while in the company of another man he fumes and would threaten to kill her.

She said her ex-husband has shamed her several times in public spaces and he often phones her while demanding to know where she would be.

Siphiwe said her ex-husband was also branding her a prostitute.

She further claimed he was also on a mission to harm her boyfriend after he once chased after him with an axe.

This was after he found them together.

Siphiwe applied for a peace order at the Western Commonage court.

“I’m applying for a peace order against my ex-husband Luka Moyo. A couple of months ago he packed my clothes into a sack and threw them out of the house before he ordered me to return to my parent’s home.

“He insulted me while branding me a prostitute. He is now stalking me and he even phones while threatening to kill me.

“He also warns me never to fall in love with any man. Whenever he meets me in the company of my boyfriend he fumes and threatens to kill me and as a result I’m now living in fear,” she said.

Moyo did not attend the court session leading the presiding magistrate Sikhethile Moyo to grant Siphiwe the protection order.

Moyo was ordered not to stalk or threaten his ex-wife with death.

Conviction Of Sikhala Unfortunate Because Of His Health Condition

Friends of Job Sikhala Trust yesterday said the conviction of Zengeza West legislator, Job Sikhala (Citizens Coalition for Change), was unfortunate because of his health condition.

Sikhala was convicted on a charge of obstructing the course of justice and fined US$600, becoming the third opposition figure to be convicted in less than a month.

He has been in pre-trial detention since June last year.

Friends of Job Sikhala Trust spokesperson Emmanuel Zellers Gumbo told NewsDay that Sikhala’s conviction was unfortunate.

“Though his health is still unstable, he still suffers from abdominal pain, his fighting spirit is still alive, his conviction to fight will never be deterred by imprisonment nor by any form of persecution,” Gumbo said.

He said attempts by the legislator to consult a doctor of his choice reportedly fell flat after he was refused the privilege.

“The last time he attempted to consult a doctor of his choice, they denied him of that,” he said.

“The conviction did not come as a surprise, we saw it coming. The conviction confirmed one thing — that this is a clear case of political persecution.

“Job Sikhala was arrested for demanding justice for the callously murdered Moreblessing Ali. Where on earth will a whole magistrate mistake such for obstruction of justice?”

In a heart-wrenching letter in January this year, Sikhala revealed that his health had severely deteriorated amid fears that he could have developed cancer of the colon.

This saw his close allies petitioning President Emmerson Mnangagwa to intervene to ensure the release of the legislator on medical grounds.

Government spokespersons, however, said Mnangagwa could not intervene in respect of the separation of powers.

Sikhala faces two other separate charges.

He faces a charge of incitement to violence following the violence that occurred at the funeral of Ali.

He is charged alongside fellow legislator Godfrey Sithole and 14 other Nyatsime residents.

Sikhala faces another charge of disorderly conduct. He insists that he is a political prisoner.

“Over 10 months, I have been kept from my people and from carrying out my duties and even though I have been kept in prison confinement, I know (South Africa’s anti-apartheid stalwart) Nelson Mandela was kept in prison, but his spirit was never broken and never will be mine,” he said in his mitigation before sentencing on Wednesday.

Police Warns Political Leaders

Police have warned leaders from across the political divide to desist from using hate speech during campaign rallies to de-escalate tension as the country moves towards the elections.

The warning comes at a time when the country continues to witness high levels of political violence and intolerance among party supporters.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said party leaders had a duty to de-escalate tension by preaching peace and tolerance at their campaign rallies.

“I want to say to our parliamentarians, as you conduct your campaigns, lead us but lead us by example. Be exemplary in your language,” Nyathi said on Tuesday during an engagement with journalists in the capital.

“As the police we have a challenge with some of the language used by our politicians. Yes, we want to get support, yes we want to entice supporters but let us be responsible.”

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said he will announce election dates at the end of the month.

Election watchdogs have, however, warned that the country is heading towards a violent election.

The run-up to lasy year’s March by-elections were marred by violence.

The violence left one Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporter, Mboneni Ncube, dead.

Nyathi said political violence was not necessary.

“We will remain Zimbabweans whatever our differences. We will remain Zimbabweans, so let us not incite violence,” he added.

“The moment we do that we are contributing towards peace and towards the maintenance of law and order in the country.”

Nengomasha, Tuku’s Daughter Officially Divorced

Former Zimbabwe national football player, Tinashe Nengomasha’s marriage to Samantha Mtukudzi has been ruled as officially over by the High Court.

The two were involved in a nasty break-up, with the court process having been initiated by Samantha, daughter of the late musician, Oliver Mtukudzi.

Samantha had demanded custody of their two children.

She then amended her summons in 2021 and asked the court to award her custody of the couple’s Maltese dog called Alvin Jazz, which they acquired when they were still staying together.

Nengomasha challenged the divorce, but High Court judge Justice Neville WaMambo ruled that there were no chances of the two reconciling.

A full judgment is not yet available.

“Whereupon, after reading documents filed of record and hearing counsel who applies for a decree of divorce and other relief on the grounds of irretrievable breakdown under the provisions of section 5 of the Matrimonial Causes Act (Chapter 5:13), it is ordered that the divorce order dated April 20, 2023 be and is hereby amended as follows: “A decree of divorce be and is hereby granted,” the judge ruled.

Nengomasha was granted custody of the minor children.

“The issues regarding access, maintenance and division of the assets of the parties shall be governed by the consent paper filed of record,” the judge said.

Samantha filed for divorce in December in 2018 saying their relationship had irretrievably broken down.

She told the court that they had lived separately for a long time.

Samantha also suggested it would be fair if she was awarded furniture which is in the couple’s Hillside house.

She also told court that the parties had acquired salon equipment, a fleet of cars and gym equipment.

Diesel was US$1.67 in March and US$1.70 in February, fuel prices started the year at US$1.65 for diesel and US$1.50 for petrol.

Chipangano Return To Colliery Stadium

Hwange’s Colliery Stadium and Bata Stadium in Gweru have been cleared to host Premier Soccer League games.

The two venues will be used by their respective teams – Hwange and newcomers Sheasham – starting on Matchday 8 of the Castle Lager Premiership this weekend.

Both Chipangano and the Construction Boys were forced to look for alternative home grounds at the start of the season after their stadiums failed to meet the minimum standards to host league games.

Hwange used Luveve Stadium in Bulawayo, while Sheasham hosted their home games at Mandava Stadium in Zvishavane.

Following extensive renovations at Bata and the Colliery, both clubs will return to their original grounds.

Meanwhile, Greenfuel and Simba Bhora will for now continue using alternative venues as their original home grounds are yet to reach minimum standards to host league games.

Greenfuel shifted from Chisumbanje and are currently using Gibbo Stadium in Triangle, while Simba Bhora, from Shamva, are hosting their games at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.- Soccer24 News
