Suicide: Anyone Can Be A Victim

Suicide is real & it’s now a pandemic: anyone can be a victim

By Dr. Munyaradzi Chidarikire

Today, the 10th of September 2022, it’s Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide respects not the colour of the skin, education, position in society, financial status among others.

Today, its a day to advance awareness program in relation to suicide, it’s causes, effects and ways to mitigate it. Suicide is now pandemic especial in low and middle income countries such as Zimbabwe. Both males and females have committed suicide. On a world scale, World Health Organisation (2021) estimated that close to 800 000 people died due to suicide. In addition, Global Burden of Disease found that 1.3% of deaths globally are due to suicide in 2019. To show the danger of suicide , WHO (2021) found that suicide is the fourth cause of death among youth. In Zimbabwe, Phiri (2022) observed that suicide cases have increased among youth aged 15-29. To support the increase of suicide cases in Zimbabwe, www.macrotrends.net found that in 2019, Zimbabwe had 14.10% of people who died due to suicide. That is 14 people died per 100 000 in Zimbabwe. Interestingly, males who are perceived to be strong culturally have committed suicide with their number being 20% and 8.8% females commit suicide in 2019 as per www.macrotrends.net findings. In Zimbabwe tertiary institutions such as Universities and colleges, students are commiting suicide. Gora (2022) in his study, found that, in 2021 , Harare Polytechnical Student, two Great Zimbabwe University students and two NUST students committed suicide due to many reasons including failed love affairs. In Bindura recently, two former young lovers died after the male killed his girlfriend and later he killed himself. In Mashonaland West one rich business man killed himself after he shot his brother over money issues. Few years ago, male pastor from one popular Pentacostal church killed himself in the church. Recently, another man committed suicide after he was fired from work. One former police officer drank poison after his wife caught him cheating. One lecturer killed himself after the examination was leaked. Few days ago, a prison guard shot himself after the prisoner escaped under his guard.

There are plenty of suicide cases that have been recorded in Zimbabwe.

People kill themselves by

People use guns, poison, ropes, knives, pills and some burn themselves in order to kill themselves. Some can even throw themselves in front of the moving cars.

Causes of suicide

Some of the causes of suicide in Zimbabwe and beyond are : marriage and relationship problems, financial problems, heath problems such as HIV/AIDS and cancer, depression, academic failures, failure to forgive yourself, drug abuse, mental challenges, hopelessness, lack of moral and emotional support.

People decide to kill themselves because the society is unforgiving and judges the offender or a person with problems harshly. Consequently, the person decides to kill / himself as a way to exit from his / her troubles.

The high statistics of men and boys killing themselves have been attributed to the society that says “man don’t cry and don’t share problems”. Majority of men are dying inside and cases of men collapsing or have sudden death have increased in Zimbabwe. I encourage men to seek professional counselling and ventilate their issues.

How to deal with suicide

  1. Understand that mistakes and problems are part of human life. History has many people who committed terrible sins and acts but they never committed suicide. Some people were laughed at and made newspaper headlines after made mistakes but they faced their challenges head on. Be strong in the face of storms.
  2. Seek professional counselling early. Professional counsellors abide to ethics such as confidentiality and are trained to assist clients deal with problems.
  3. Seek counselling from trusted friends, workmates, relatives , church members among others.
  4. Move out of abusive relationships and toxic work places. It’s better to resign from workplace that affect your mental well being. Sometimes running away from where the problem is better. I know people who went to Britain, America after facing life threatening situations. A case in point in Zimbabwe, before and after November 2017 when political leadership change. Some political leaders sensed dangers and ran away from Zimbabwe. Gwara harina mboje.
  5. Some of the problems need spiritual intervention through prayer and other spiritual engagements. Therefore, some resort to prayers and fasting
  6. Awareness programs on the causes, dangers and ways to solve problems associated with suicide must be escalated.
  7. Seek treatment if you are sick.
  8. Give yourself second chance. Never give up.
  9. Family, workmates and society must give support to others. Everyone needs a shoulder to cry on and support system. Never give up on your relative, workmate or classmate with a problem.
  10. Stop judging those in problems. Harshly judging them may drive them to commit suicide. Be considerate.

Robber, 5 Passengers Die In Accident

A speeding wanted robber who was driving a stolen vehicle allegedly caused the road accident that claimed six lives in Mutare recently.

One of the Honda Fit vehicles that were involved in the accident that killed six people near Mutare Teachers’ College on Sunday morning had been stolen in Chipinge the previous week.

The mastermind of the robbery was driving the car and he died on the spot.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Manicaland Province, Inspector Nobert, Muzondo confirmed the development.

He said that the driver of the stolen vehicle was Tawanda Chitambo (31) of Chikanga 1 in Mutare.

Chitambo had stolen the Honda Fit he was driving from Takudzwa Ngqobi (20) in Chipinge on 29 August.

Insp Muzondo further revealed that police were hunting for Chitambo’s two accomplices in the robbery who were still at large. He said:

During enquiries to establish the registered owner of the Honda Fit, it was established that the vehicle had been stolen from a taxi operator plying the Mt Selinda-Chipinge route.

Investigations revealed that Mr Ngqobi was hired by the three suspects to ferry them to Mutakura Dam Turn-off.

They lied to the complainant that they wanted to visit a sick relative. The complainant agreed and charged them US$10.

When they arrived at their intended destination, the suspects ordered the complainant to drive further into the bush where they robbed him of his car, US$80 and a cellphone. They tied him up and fled from the scene.

The complainant later freed himself and made a police report.

Chitambo reportedly started using the stolen vehicle as a pirate tax and was killed in the accident on 4 September after he had picked up passengers in Mutare.- Manica Post

DONATE or GET OUT: Mazowe Boys High Forces Kids

AUTHORITIES at Mazowe Boys High School have come under fire from parents for allegedly denying their children access to hostels without paying a US$20 donation.
In chats, circulating on social media, the parents are complaining over the “donations”.

However, Mazowe High headmaster, Thompson Katanda, dismissed the allegations.

“All students enrolled at our school are learning, even those who didn’t fully pay their fees.

“We have accommodated them and no child has been evicted.

“I am not even aware about teacher incentive issues and complaints raised.

“I can conclude that there was no such conduct,” he said.

But, a parent with a son at the school, insisted they were being forced to pay a donation of US$20 to cushion teachers.

“The school has a desk in front of the administration building which was being used to collect the US$20 donation.

“Many parents were shocked by the school’s conduct as it prioritised teachers’ incentives above its core business of teaching.

“The school disguised the money as a mission fund,” said the parent.

Another parent was riled by the school’s conduct.

“I am greatly disappointed that my child was embarrassed, for a donation, which the school never communicated to us.

“I am going to take every necessary step and knock every door for correctional measures.”

Another parent, who also preferred anonymity added:

“To make matters worse, another WhatsApp group called ‘Mission Fund’ was created and the condition for one to be admitted was to pay the donation.

“Now, parents fear that important information may be communicated via that group.” H Metro

Brighton Tuwaya Still Going Strong At 40

The day is August 6, 2022 and Brighton Tuwaya has just turned 40.

Unlike most of his former teammates, he is not preparing to watch the game on television in the comfort of his home or bark instructions from the touchline as a coach.

He is preparing to play in a match being hyped, with justified conviction, as the Northern Region Division One title decider, between Golden Eagles and Simba Bhora.

The pint-sized central defender is the captain of Shamva-based Simba Bhora and the determination and hunger he has, for someone his age, is unmatched.

He says his formula is discipline and accepting that talent is God-given.

“The secret is I don’t do drugs, which are destroying the careers of many youngsters nowadays. That is why I have managed to play for this long,” said Tuwaya.

“The other thing is, talent comes from the Most High God, so I should showcase it until my body no longer permits,” he added.

The veteran defender believes there are many reasons for a team to excel and experience is one of them, which is why Arthur Tutani’s charges have done well this season.

They are two wins away from securing promotion to the Premier Soccer League in a nail-bitting title race which also involves Herentals U20.

Despite how much he is enjoying his football and the finishing line being in sight, Tuwaya is not counting eggs as chickens.

“Anything can happen in football, tables can turn so we need to concentrate in the last three games of the season for the job to be done,” Tuwaya said.

“A lot of people did not believe we would do this well. We were labelled as team of old horses but only God can determine outcomes in life.”

Tuwaya is no stranger to top-flight football, having played for Dynamos before. He also featured for the Harare giants in the CAF Champions League in 2008 and 2010.

He reckons the experience from Africa’s premier club competition has come in handy in Simba Bhora’s title charge.

“The experience I got in the Champions League is useful. I inject it in my teammates and tell them that there is no such thing as an away game as long as it’s in Zimbabwe. We should believe in ourselves to win every game,” Tuwaya said.

The seasoned defender is grateful to Simba Bhora owner Simba ‘Buju’ Ndoro, for the role the Shamva-raised businessman has played in his career, as well as the team at large.

“I thank Mr. Ndoro a lot for what he is doing. He has been very supportive all season and all I can say to him is; only God can reward you,” he said.

For Tuwaya, 40 is just a number which comes after 39.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Malema Rebukes Dead Queen Elizabeth

By A Correspondent

South Africa’s second-largest opposition political party, EFF led by Julius Malema, says it will not mourn the death of the British Queen, Elizabeth II, as she never apologised for the plunder of African resources and the brutal killings of millions of African people by the British during the colonial era.

Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, died Thursday afternoon at Balmoral, Scotland, aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.
In a statement issued by National Spokesperson, Sinawo Thambo on Thursday, the party said that if indeed there is life after death, Elizabeth and her ancestors should be punished for their crimes.

Reads the statement:

The Economic Freedom Fighters notes the death of Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, the Queen of the United Kingdom, and the ceremonial head of state of several countries that were colonized by the United Kingdom.

Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952, reigning for 70 years as a head of an institution built up, sustained, and living off a brutal legacy of dehumanization of millions of people across the world.

We do not mourn the death of Elizabeth, because to us her death is a reminder of a very tragic period in this country and Africa’s history.

Britain, under the leadership of the royal family, took over control of this territory that would become South Africa in 1795 from Batavian control and took permanent control of the territory in 1806.
From that moment onwards, native people of this land have never known peace, nor have they ever enjoyed the fruits of the riches of this land, riches which were and still are utilized for the enrichment of the British royal family and those who look like them.

From 1811 when Sir John Cradock declared war against amaXhosa in the Zuurveld in what is now known as the Eastern Cape up until 1906 when the British crushed the Bambatha rebellion, our interaction with Britain under the leadership of the British royal family has been one of pain and suffering, of death and dispossession, and of dehumanization of African people.

We remember how Nxele died in the aftermath of the fifth frontier war, how King Hintsa was killed like a dog on the 11th of May 1835 during the sixth frontier war and had his body mutilated, and his head taken to Britain as a trophy.
It was also the British royal family that sanctioned the actions of Cecil John Rhodes, who plundered this country, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

It was the British royal family that benefited from the brutal mutilation of the people of Kenya whose valiant resistance to British colonialism invited vile responses from Britain.

In Kenya, Britain built concentration camps and suppressed with such inhumane brutality the Mau Mau rebellion, killing Dedan Kimathi on the 18th of February 1957, while Elizabeth was already Queen.
This family plundered India via the East India Company, it took over control and oppressed the people of the Caribbean Islands.

Their thirst for riches led to the famine that caused millions of people to die in Bengal, and their racism led to the genocide of aboriginal people in Australia.

Elizabeth Windsor, during her lifetime, never acknowledged these crimes that Britain and her family in particular perpetrated across the world.

In fact, she was a proud flag bearer of these atrocities during her reign. When the people of Yemen rose to protest against British colonialism in 1963, Elizabeth ordered a brutal suppression of that uprising.

During her 70-year reign as Queen, she never once acknowledge the atrocities that her family inflicted on native people that Britain invaded across the world.

She willingly benefited from the wealth that was attained from the exploitation and murder of millions of people across the world.

The British Royal family stands on the shoulders of millions of slaves who were shipped away from the continent to serve the interests of racist white capital accumulation, at the centre of which lies the British royal family.
If there is real life and justice after death, may Elizabeth and her ancestors get what they deserve.

David Muhambi In Serious Grain Scandal

By Staff Reporter| The Small to Medium Millers Association of Zimbabwe (SMMAZ) president David Muhambi has been accused of theft of trust property at Grain Marketing Board ( GMB) Nklumani.

According to GMB officials at Nklumani Muhambi converted over 600 tonnes of maize to his personal use.

“Sometime in 2020 we gave Muhambi over 600 tonnes of maize to do toll milling for us but instead he converted the maize to his own use, when quizzed about the missing maize the notorious Muhambi bribed his way to pay back,” revealed the source who declined to be named.

“Muhambi is still paying back GMB to date since the maize was then converted to a debt.”

Contacted for comment Muhambi was ballistic about the matter and threatened legal action against this publication.

“I will also urge you to seek facts before rushing to print these allegations. Failure to which, I will pursue you legally. I have also been told that part of your strategy is print your subjective biased story and state that you didn’t receive a response from me. Lets see,” said Muhambi.

However, Muhambi is not new to controversy as he is also accused of abusing government Roller Meal subsidy programme where he is said to have diverted subsidized mealie-meal to the black market.

Small-Scale Millers Association of Zimbabwe president Davis Muhambi has been fingered in the abuse of the government Roller Meal subsidy programme where he is said to have diverted subsidised mealie- meal to the black market..

Muhambi owns United Milling Company which is based in Bulawayo and was part of the government managed Roller Meal subsidy programme last year.

According to NewsDay, the corruption scam was revealed by disgruntled workers at Muhambi’s firm.

NewsDay reported that Muhambi owed local shops more than US$300 000 worth of roller meal which he failed to supply despite having accessed maize from GMB.

The government last year in March rolled out a roller meal subsidy programme where it prepaid millers to supply cheap maize meal to citizens throughout the country.

Millers, who participated in the programme accessed maize from GMB and got paid in advance for milling and distribution of mealie-meal by the Treasury.

There were, however, reports of the abuse of the facility by some millers who diverted the product to the black market and sold it in United States dollars.

July Moyo Exposed For Shielding City Land Baron Ken Sharpe And “Listless” Associates From Prosecution

By A Correspondent| A Harare businessman George Katsimberis has exposed a sinister agenda by Local Government minister July Moyo to shield controversial developer Kenneth Raydon Sharpe from facing prosecution over countless corrupt land dealings that have stripped City of Harare of prime land for a song.

According to High Court challenge filed by Katsimberis, July Moyo usurped the Prosecutor General’s powers to grant Sharpe, his companies and an undefined number of associates criminal immunity, through a secretive deed of settlement.

Katsimberis told the High Court that Moyo’s immunity to Sharpe also shielded all of his associates, noting that this could end up being abused by the self-exiled businessman to protect criminals around him.

“The people given immunity are so many that the deed of settlement will purportedly continue to protect the 3rd Respondent’s associates forever. And, with associates not being defined anywhere, the deed of settlement effectively makes it possible for anyone that 3rd respondent claims to be their associate to be untouchable by the criminal justice system. Such a wide discretion given to a private entity, and such blanket immunity, is not even enjoyed by the people who have immunity in terms of the constitution,” said Katsimberis.

He further reminded the High Court that it was unconstitutional and against tenets of good governance and public accountability for a government department to enter into confidential agreements with a private citizen.

“In any event, to the extent that the deed of settlement states that it is confidential, it is in violent of section 62 of the Constitution. For the purposes of public accountability, the state cannot enter into secret agreements of this nature, which have no national or public policy justification for said secrecy,” added Katsimberis.

Katsimberis who is a state witness in case in which he reported Sharpe’s Augur Investments OU for malicious damage to property said the inclusion of the secretive deed of settlement as part of the accused’s defence smacked of a plan to intimidate him that they are untouchable due to fraudulently granted immunity.

Hwende Demands Action To Get Sikhala, Sithole And Nyatsime 16 Out

CITIZENS Coalition for Change (CCC) top official, Charlton Hwende has called for mass protests to force the immediate release of incarcerated legislators, Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole, along with14 other political activists.

Hwende, a former secretary-general of the disbanded MDC formation led by Nelson Chamisa, said the dire conditions facing the jailed CCC activists demanded a quick response to rescue the political prisoners, before they die behind bars.

Posting on Twitter Thursday, Hwende described the activists’ situation as heartrending.

“The situation of our MPs Hon Job Sikhala & Godfrey Sithole, plus the Nyatsime Cdes is very depressing,” Hwende said.

“If we don’t act, these Cdes will not be released soon and some might even die in detention. Political prisoners require either mass action or political engagement to be released.”

Hwende’s sentiments followed similar calls by University of Zimbabwe (UZ) constitutional law lecturer, Lovemore Madhuku, who urged CCC to swallow its pride and engage Zanu PF and its leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa, to expedite the jailed activists’ freedom.

Last weekend, there were security fears after Sikhala fell sick in his D Class detention cell reserved for dangerous criminals. This was amid unconfirmed reports he was poisoned. The MP’s lawyer, Beatrice Mtetwa was asked to call a private doctor to attend to the politician who was vomiting.Sikhala and his colleague have been in prison for nearly three months over charges of inciting violence and obstructing the course of justice, both charges emanating from the case of slain CCC activist Moreblessing Ali.

Sikhala has repeatedly been denied bail by both the High Court and Supreme Court.

President Chamisa Demands Reforms Before Polls

Tinashe Sambiri|CCC leader President Nelson Chamisa has appealed to SADC to resolve the deepening crisis in Zimbabwe as a matter of urgency.

Millions of Zimbabweans have left the country due to perennial economic and political problems.

Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s “new dispensation” has dismally failed to revive the economy.

Mr Mnangagwa claims his administration is different from the one led by Robert Mugabe.

Below is President Chamisa’s statement on the escalating political crisis in Zimbabwe…

Zimbabweans do not want to be a burden.

SADC must help us relieve this regional burden

Writes the Champion in Chief, President Nelson Chamisa

Like many people in Zimbabwe and elsewhere around the world, I recently watched a video of Dr Phophi Ramathuba, the Limpopo MEC for Health, as she spoke to a Zimbabwean patient seeking care in a hospital.

As I listened to my dear compatriot expressing gratitude to the MEC, I was filled with a deep sense of regret, sadness, and rage.

Her vulnerability reminded us of real impact of poor leadership on the lives and dignity of our people. For me, it deepened my resolve to change it.
Like many other Zimbabweans who have had to shelter outside our borders, she did not want to be there. It was not her choice. She is there because her leaders, back at home, do not care about her.
She is not alone.
Zimbabwe has been a burden to her neighbours for far too long. It is time we changed this.
By the government’s own estimates, since this regime took power, people have left the country at a higher rate than at any time in our history. The national statistics agency recently released data showing that emigration reached a peak in 2021.

Nowhere is this exodus felt so strongly than in our critical health sector.
In the 12 months to March 2020, the UK took in 1059 Zimbabweans on that country’s skilled work visa. By 2022, that number had increased to 5549 visas to Zimbabweans for skilled work. Put in other terms, the number of skilled workers that have left Zimbabwe to work in other countries has gone up by 424% in just two years.
Zimbabwe is among the Top 5 recipients of these skilled visas to the UK. A country with a population of 15 million is in the same category with nations such as India – with its population of over a billion – in terms of exporting skills. We are losing skilled people more than countries that are at war.
Where are all these skilled people coming from? Many are coming out of our hospitals. Not only are they unable to feed their families, but they also have to face the emotional and psychological trauma of watching their patients die from what should be easily treatable ailments.
Our healthcare system fails the most basic tests.

The current doctor to patient ratio and nurse to patient ratio in Zimbabwe is depressing.
The last survey revealed 1.6 doctors per 10,000 people (23 doctors per 10,000 people is the W.H.O recommendation). Zimbabwe has 7.2 nurses per 10,000 people, which should be 83 per 10,000 people.

As I write, more than 700 children have been killed by measles, a disease that should not be afflicting us in this century. Our maternal mortality rate is 462 per 100 000 live births, one of the highest in the world. Our neonatal mortality rate is at 31 deaths per 1 000 live births. This rate has not changed since 1988, showing the lack of progress in healthcare.
Recently, our hearts broke after seven babies were stillborn in one night at Harare Central Hospital, because their mothers did not get the care they needed in time.
There is a reason why our hospitals are in this state. We know why patients are crossing the borders to seek treatment in neighbouring countries. It is because of corruption, bad governance and poor leadership under ZANU PF misrule.
Millions were lost in COVID-19 procurement deals, and nobody was held accountable. The political elite gets treated overseas. This is who they are; they do not care for ordinary people, like that woman in the Limpopo hospital. They care only for themselves.
Our crisis is not just a health crisis, or an economic crisis. It is essentially a governance crisis. Nelson Mandela once said there was a “crisis of leadership in Zimbabwe”. The icon was right. We are facing the consequences today, and so is the entire region.
We have a plan to turn this around. We have a New Great Zimbabwe plan to build and transform Zimbabwe into a greatness.
Zimbabwe is not poor. It is poorly led. It is simply a leadership crisis. And we will fix it.
The cartels that smuggle US$1.6 billion worth of gold from our country every year will be stopped. We will rededicate a larger proportion of our national budget to critical social services, and away from the overpriced vanity projects designed to oil corrupt cartels. We will increase the budget for health and ramp up support to our professionals.
We will treat our people at home, in our own first-class hospitals.
This all starts with solving the governance crisis, once and for all. We need reforms. We must PREPARE, and have a pre-election pact on electoral and political reforms.

Our call to our neighbours is this; we appreciate your benevolence and patience, but you should not have to carry this burden any longer than you already have.
Help us to hold credible elections. We are encouraged that President Cyril Ramaphosa has said the immigration crisis will be discussed at regional level. Now, more strongly than ever, SADC must demand reforms. We do not ask for anything new; only that Zimbabwe hold elections that meet already existing SADC guidelines.
This, more than shaming the innocent victims of misrule, is what will solve the crisis.
Zimbabweans do not want to cross the borders for services or jobs. They do not want to be a burden. They have not chosen this life. They have not chosen their leaders. It is time they did.

Office of the MP Successfully Implements the CDF Project for 2022

The Office of the MP for Whange Central Constituency has successfully implemented its low cost but high impact project under the 2022 parliamentary Constituency Development Fund (CDF)

The 2022 project focused on the installation of water retention tanks (Jojo Tanks) in various public schools at local communities levels.

At times, some schools have been forced to consider closing temporarily due to water supply related problems

Each of the 210 constituencies across the country was allocated 11.4 million RTGS for CDF for 2022.

In response, our local CDF Committee did an extensive consultation public process, in close partnership with all the local ward Councillors under our constituency.

After the consultation process was successfully completed, it was then unanimously agreed that the 2022 CDF disbursement be used to buy the water retention tanks in order to guarantee access to water supplies in our local public schools.

The Office of the MP is so happy to announce that there are 12 local communities institutions that have now managed to benefit from the 2022 CDF project.

In particular, eleven public schools across the urban parts of our constituency together with the St Patrick’s Hospital at Empumalanga benefited from this year’s project.

United Kingdom Mourns Queen Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom’s longest-serving monarch, died on Thursday afternoon at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

Buckingham Palace announced the Queen’s death in a statement. It said:

The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.

At Buckingham Palace in London, crowds that were awaiting updates on the Queen’s condition began crying as they heard of her death.

The Queen was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, in Mayfair, London, on 21 April 1926.

She married her third cousin, Philip, Prince of Greece, at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947, with the prince taking the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

She would later describe him as “my strength and stay” through 74 years of marriage, before his death in 2021, aged 99.

The Queen’s reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975, and appointed by the Queen earlier this week.

She held weekly audiences with her prime minister throughout her reign.- BBC

Malema Celebrates Queen Elizabeth’s Death

By- South Africa’s second-largest opposition political party, EFF led by Julius Malema, says it will not mourn the death of the British Queen, Elizabeth II, as she never apologised for the plunder of African resources and the brutal killings of millions of African people by the British during the colonial era.

Mamombe, Chimbiri Ruling Court Ruling-Magistrate In No Show

By James Gwati- The court Friday deferred the ruling against CCC members Joana Mamombe and Cecilia Chimbiri after the presiding magistrate failed to show up.

The three were expecting a ruling on their discharge application at the State’s close.

Chief Magistrate Mrs Faith Mushure was not available to deliver the ruling.

The duo made their application after the State, led by Mr Michael Reza, led all its witnesses.

CCC Calls For Mass Protests

By- The opposition CCC secretary general, Chalton Hwende has called for mass protests to push for the release of Job Sikhala, Godfrey Sithole, and 14 other party’s activists.

Sikhala, Sithole and 14 others have been in remand prison for almost three months.

Hwende, said if the “Nyatsime 16” are not released from prison soon, they may die.

He posted on Twitter:
The situation of our MPs Hon Job Sikhala & Godfrey Sithole, plus the Nyatsime Cdes is very depressing.
If we don’t act, these Cdes will not be released soon and some might even die in detention.
Political prisoners require either mass action or political engagement to be released.
Last week, Sikhala fell sick in his D Class detention cell reserved for dangerous criminals amid unconfirmed reports he was poisoned.

Mai TT Burns US$6000 Wedding Gown

By- Socialite and Comedienne Felistus Murata, known as Mai TT, said she burnt her wedding gown to forget about her marriage with the US-based Tinashe Maphosa.

Mai TT told H-Metro that burning the wedding garment, valued at US$6 000, following the collapse of her short-lived marriage to Maphosa signified that not everything is meant to be sold. She said:

I can never sell my pain to anyone. I did my prayers and wiped my tears with that gown, which is symbolic that not everything is meant to be sold.

This is a personal matter and I’m expecting answers from it.

Nobody influences me, I influenced myself and my tears never fall in vain.

No amount can pay back the pain of betrayal.

That gown will be my contact.

… I’ve burnt it in public and the answer will return where I burnt it from.

Mai TT’s wedding ceremony in April this year reportedly gobbled up US$100 000 and left her neck-deep in debt.

But soon after the wedding, Mai TT started claiming that Tinashe was a smooth and shrewd criminal.

She said her estranged husband has perfected the art of planning his moves, before striking to manipulate his victims.

War Vets Declare War Against Chamisa

By- War veterans said they would crush the opposition and NGOs defending Emerson Mnangagwa.

During a Press conference in Harare, Thursday, war veterans secretary Douglas Mahiya accused opposition parties and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of being used by Western countries to effect regime change in Zimbabwe. Said Mahiya:
We are going out there to mobilise for the party. We have got political power, the question of power is not what we should be talking about in Zimbabwe, because Zimbabwe got political power from the colonisers… an opposition party that talks of power is misguided.
Our erstwhile enemies have planted their proxies, the opposition parties and NGOs to scatter the organisation… we are going to defend that power because we sacrificed for this.
ZANU PF national commissar Mike Bimha also said the party would use the ZANU PF war veterans conference which started on Thursday in Harare to garner support ahead of the 2023 elections. He said:
As you are all aware the inaugural war veterans league conference is now in motion, which is a wing of the party, we are now witnessing history in the making.
And, therefore, for us as commissariat we welcome the coming on board of this league; it makes our jobs easier joining the youth and women’s leagues, moreso as we face the 2023 elections.
Over 3 000 delegates are expected to attend the conference.

Mhurushomana Wins Legal Battle Against ZIFA

A former ZIFA employee, Lazurus Mhurushomana, has won a long standing legal battle with the country’s football governing body over salary areas owed to him.

Mhurushomana was an administrator at ZIFA before he was retrenched in 2004 and has had a perennial battle with the national association in which he has been demanding salary arrears owed to him, which have accumulated interest.

The salary amounts to US$235 029,34 and US$22,320 in allowances for telephone and fuel for the period covering 2004 to 2009.

He also added US$18 000 as his annual salary from July 2010 and December 2017 at a rate of US$1 500 per month.

A garnishee order was placed on ZIFA accounts in 2019, but the executive board at that time received a tip-off and managed to transfer the savings to an individual account belonging to Philemon Machana before Mhurushomana could access the funds.

The court has ruled again and ordered the plaintiff to attach ZIFA’s properties worth US$518 331,18.

The ruling has also granted Mhurushomana access to several Zifa Ecobank accounts at the Sam levy Branch in Borrowdale, Harare.

The development delivers another blow to the new ZIFA board that took the office in May.

The Gift Banda-led executive was ordered by CAF to stop using any funds received from continental body and FIFA as the FA is still under sanctions.

FIFA suspended ZIFA’s membership following suspension of Felton Kamambo and Machana by the SRC.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Adolescents Health Matters

Key facts

Over 1.5 million adolescents and young adults aged 10–24 years died in 2020, nearly 5000 every day.
Young adolescents aged 10–14 years have the lowest risk of death of all age groups.
Injuries (including road traffic injuries and drowning), violence, self-harm and maternal conditions are the leading causes of death among adolescents and young adults
Half of all mental health disorders in adulthood start by age 14, but most cases are undetected and untreated.
Early onset of substance use is associated with higher risks of developing dependence and other problems during adult life, and people of younger ages are disproportionately affected by substance use compared with people of older ages.
Globally, there were 41 births per 1000 to girls aged 15–19 years in 2020.

Overview
Survival chances for adolescents and young adults vary greatly across the world. In 2020, the probability of dying among those aged 10–24 years was highest in sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania (excluding Australia and New Zealand), northern Africa and southern Asia (1). The average global probability of a 10-year-old dying before age 24 was 6 times higher in sub-Saharan Africa than in North America and Europe.

Main health issues
Injuries
Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death and disability among adolescents. In 2019, nearly 100 000 adolescents (10–19 years) died as a result of road traffic accidents (2). Many of those who died were vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, cyclists or users of motorized two-wheelers. In many countries, road safety laws need to be made more comprehensive, and enforcement of such laws needs to be strengthened. Furthermore, young drivers need advice on driving safely, while laws that prohibit driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs need to be strictly enforced among all age groups. Blood alcohol levels should be set lower for young drivers than for adults. Graduated licences for novice drivers with zero-tolerance for drink-driving are recommended.

Drowning is also among the top causes of death among adolescents; more than 40 000 adolescents, over three quarters of them boys, are estimated to have drowned in 2019. Teaching children and adolescents to swim is an essential intervention to prevent these deaths.

Violence
Interpersonal violence is among the leading causes of death in adolescents and young people globally. Its prominence varies substantially by world region. It causes nearly a third of all adolescent male deaths in low- and middle-income countries in the WHO Region of the Americas. According to the global school-based student health survey 42% of adolescent boys and 37% of adolescent girls were exposed to bullying. Sexual violence also affects a significant proportion of youth: 1 in 8 young people report sexual abuse.

Violence during adolescence also increases the risks of injury, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, mental health problems, poor school performance and dropout, early pregnancy, reproductive health problems, and communicable and noncommunicable diseases.

Effective prevention and response strategies include promoting parenting and early childhood development; addressing school-based bullying prevention, programmes that develop life and social skills, and community approaches to reduce access to alcohol and firearms. Effective and empathetic care for adolescent survivors of violence, including ongoing support, can help with the physical and psychological consequences.

Mental health
Depression is one of the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents, and suicide is the second leading cause of death in people aged 15–19 years (2). Mental health conditions account for 16% of the global burden of disease and injury in people aged 10–19 years. Half of all mental health disorders in adulthood start by age 14, but most cases are undetected and untreated.

Many factors have an impact on the well-being and mental health of adolescents. Violence, poverty, stigma, exclusion, and living in humanitarian and fragile settings can increase the risk of developing mental health problems. The consequences of not addressing adolescent mental health conditions extend to adulthood, impairing both physical and mental health and limiting opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as adults.

Building socioemotional skills in children and adolescents and providing them with psychosocial support in schools and other community settings can help promote good mental health. Programmes to help strengthen the ties between adolescents and their families and improve quality of home environments are also important. If problems arise, they should be detected and timely managed by competent and caring health workers.

Adolescent mental health fact sheet

Alcohol and drug use
Drinking alcohol among adolescents is a major concern in many countries. It can reduce self-control and increase risky behaviours, such as unsafe sex or dangerous driving. It is an underlying cause of injuries (including those due to road traffic accidents), violence and premature deaths. It can also lead to health problems in later life and affects life expectancy. Worldwide, more than a quarter of all people aged 15–19 years are current drinkers, amounting to 155 million adolescents. Prevalence of heavy episodic drinking among adolescents aged 15–19 years was 13.6% in 2016, with males most at risk.

Cannabis is the most widely used psychoactive drug among young people with about 4.7% of people aged 15–16 years using it at least once in 2018. Alcohol and drug use in children and adolescents is associated with neurocognitive alterations which can lead to behavioural, emotional, social and academic problems in later life.

Prevention of alcohol and drug use are important areas of public health actions and may include population-based strategies and interventions, activities in school, community, family and on the individual level. Setting a minimum age for buying and consuming alcohol and eliminate marketing and advertising to minors are among the key strategies for reducing drinking among adolescents.

Tobacco use
The vast majority of people using tobacco today began doing so when they were adolescents. Prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to minors (under 18 years) and increasing the price of tobacco products through higher taxes, banning tobacco advertising and ensuring smoke-free environments are crucial. Globally, at least 1 in 10 adolescents aged 13–15 years uses tobacco, although there are areas where this figure is much higher.

HIV/AIDS
An estimated 1.7 million adolescents (age 10–19 years) were living with HIV in 2019 with around 90% in the WHO African Region (3). While there have been substantial declines in new infections amongst adolescents from a peak in 1994, adolescents still account for about 10% of new adult HIV infections, with three-quarters amongst adolescent girls (4). Additionally, while new infections may have fallen in many of the most severely affected countries, recent testing coverage remains low suggesting that many adolescents and young people living with HIV may not know their status (5).

Adolescents living with HIV have worse access to antiretroviral treatment, adherence to treatment, retention in care and viral suppression. A key factor contributing to these is limited provision of adolescent-friendly services including psychosocial interventions and support.

Adolescents and young people need to know how to protect themselves from HIV infection and must also have the means to do so. This includes being able to obtain access HIV prevention interventions including voluntary medical male circumcision, condoms and pre-exposure prophylaxis, better access to HIV testing and counselling, and stronger links to HIV treatment services for those who test HIV positive.

Other infectious diseases
Thanks to improved childhood vaccination, adolescent deaths and disability from measles have fallen markedly. For example, adolescent mortality from measles fell by 90% in the African Region between 2000 and 2012.

Diarrhoea and lower respiratory tract infections (pneumonia) are estimated to be among the top 10 causes of death for adolescents 10–14 years. These two diseases, along with meningitis, are all among the top 5 causes of adolescent death in African low- and middle-income countries.

Infectious diseases like with human papilloma virus that normally occurs after onset of sexual activity can lead to both short-term disease (genital warts) during adolescence but more importantly also leads to cervical and other cancers several decades later. Early adolescence (9–14 years) is the optimal time for vaccination against HPV infection and it is estimated that if 90% of girls globally get the HPV vaccine more than 40 million lives could be saved over the next century. However, it is estimated that in 2019 only 15% of girls globally received the vaccine.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical cancer fact sheet

Early pregnancy and childbirth
Approximately 12 million girls aged 15–19 years and at least 777 000 girls under 15 years give birth each year in developing regions. Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are among the leading causes of death for girls aged 15–19 years globally.

The UN Population Division puts the global adolescent birth rate in 2020 at 41 births per 1000 girls this age, and country rates range from 1 to over 200 births per 1000 girls (6). This indicates a marked decrease since 1990. This decrease is reflected in a similar decline in maternal mortality rates among girls aged 15–19 years.

One of the specific targets of the health Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 3) is that by 2030, the world should ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services, including for family planning, information and education, and the integration of reproductive health into national strategies and programmes.

Adolescents need and have a right to comprehensive sexuality education, a curriculum-based process of teaching and learning about the cognitive, emotional, physical and social aspects of sexuality. Better access to contraceptive information and services can reduce the number of girls becoming pregnant and giving birth at too young an age. Laws that are enforced that specify a minimum age of marriage at 18 can help.

Girls who do become pregnant need access to quality antenatal care. Where permitted by law, adolescents who opt to terminate their pregnancies should have access to safe abortion.

Zim Crisis: President Chamisa Appeals For SADC Intervention

Ruling On Mamombe, Chimbiri Case Postponed

Harare Magistrate Taurai Manuwere has postponed the case of CCC MP Johanna Mamombe and activist Cecelia Chimbiri case to Monday 12 September 2022 for the ruling on application for discharge at the close of the State case.

Deputy prosecutor general Michael Reza made the application for the postponement after trial magistrate in the matter Ms Faith Mushure was not available on Friday 9 September 2022.

Efforts by defence lawyer Alec Muchadehama to have another date due to prior commitments failed after Reza assured the court that the case would be given priority on Monday.

Magistrate Manuwere granded Mr Reza his wish on the grounds that the assurance was “reasonable”.

Deploy Ambulances at Tollgates, CCC Demands

The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has demanded that government deploys ambulances at tollgates to save lives of accident victims who are dying due to lack of immediate help along major highways.

In a statement, CCC Secretary for Transport, Settlement Chikwinya said stationing of ambulances at tollgates was embraced by all stakeholders with the ball now in government’s court to ensure it is done.

Below is Chikwinya’s full statement;

Most road traffic accident victims die within the first hour if they do not recieve adequate medical attention, study has shown.

It is with this realisation in mind that the idea of stationing ambulance services at all toll gates was embraced by all road stakeholders as far back as May 2021 but up to now, victims of road traffic accidents continue to loose life with government sitting on ambulances donated for deployement at Tollgates without stationing them where they are due.

The World Health Organization in May 2021 donated 10 Ambulances to render quick response medical services from Tollgates and these where recieved by the Minister of Health Hon Chiwenga but sadly these ambulances are still docked in government park yards somewhere.

Recently the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe donated four more ambulances for the same purposes as Zimbabwe intends to to raise the figure of Ambulances to be stationed at Tollgates to twenty but still none of these have been deployed with no explanation from Chiwenga.

The Citizens Coalition for Change calls of the government to expedite the deployment of this critical service especially at this time when we are heading towards rainy season and Christmas holidays a season that is characterized by high road traffic accident rate.

Ambulances at Toll gates arrive much faster at accident scenes because they do not have to weave through the high traffic volume that characterizes our city centers especially during peak hours.

This service if properly implemented as per the recommendations of the World Health Organization will definitely save many lives and we call upon Hon Chiwenga the Minister of Health to immediately release the available Ambulances for work so that we minimise any further loss of life.

2023 Elections: Hope For Electoral Reforms Fades

Opposition parties have lost hope of the country holding free and fair elections next year in the absence of electoral reforms.

Some of the political parties have predicted a disputed poll as government drags its feet on implementing electoral reforms.

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party leader Nelson Chamisa yesterday made a passionate plea to the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) to stand in solidarity with the opposition party in its call for electoral reforms, which he said would help resolve the regional migration crisis.

In an open letter to Sadc, Chamisa said the emigration crisis facing Zimbabwe would continue affecting other countries in the region if the Zimbabwean governance crisis remains unresolved.

“Zimbabwe has been a burden to her neighbours for far too long,” Chamisa wrote.

“It is time we changed this. This all starts with solving the governance crisis, once and for all. We need reforms. We must prepare and have a pre-election pact on electoral and political reforms. Our call to our neighbours is this; we appreciate your benevolence and patience, but you should not have to carry this burden any longer than you already have.

“Help us to hold credible elections. We are encouraged that President Cyril Ramaphosa has said the immigration crisis will be discussed at regional level. Now, more strongly than ever, Sadc must demand reforms. We do not ask for anything new; only that Zimbabwe holds elections that meet already existing Sadc guidelines. This, more than shaming the innocent victims of misrule, is what will solve the crisis,” Chamisa said.

Other political party leaders said government had failed to implement the necessary reforms in the past four years, which prompted them to have doubts on the possibility of authorities achieving it in less than the 12 months left before the next election.

They were speaking during a virtual discussion on analysis of critical electoral reforms for 2023 general elections, which was hosted by the Zimbabwe Election Support Network on Wednesday.

Opposition parties have complained about lack of independence of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) and its failure to avail a credible voters roll, among others.

Gweru Urban MP Brian Dube (MDC-T) said some of the reforms could be implemented immediately, but government had dragged its feet to walk the talk since the 2018 election.

“The electoral reforms can be done through the legislative processes and for the law to be passed, it does not take ages as long as there is will, it can take up to two weeks,” he said.

“Zimbabweans already know what they want, a balanced and independent Zec that is demilitarised so that all those soldiers, the security sectors that comprise the electoral body, are removed. We should agree on the constitutional amendments. Those do not require years to be done. It’s only that there is no political will and intention to hold a free and fair election in Zimbabwe.”

ZimFirst party secretary-general Tafadzwa Tom added: “There are no two ways about electoral reforms, they are needed urgently. If the call for reforms is ignored, after the election there will still be talks of electoral reform. There is need for reforms for … a level ground. The electoral law should be amended.”

Political party leaders also implored Zec to fulfil the citizens’ right to vote on some disenfranchised groups which include those in hospitals, prisons and in the diaspora.

CCC deputy secretary for elections Ellen Shiriyedenga said: “As far as we are concerned from the CCC point of view, no discussions with regards to the electoral reforms have been done, particularly looking at the stakeholder engagement processes, the multiparty committees and also even the public discussions.

“The only thing that we have seen is the poll survey when Zec was engaging the public with regards to their views on registration of political parties. We have written to Zec several times with regards to the issue of electoral reforms.”

Labour Economists and African Democratic Party leader Linda Masarira said: “Extending the right to vote is something that we have also been advocating for for a very long time, especially for the population in prison which is always short-changed and those who will be in hospitals during the election time.”

Academic Ibbo Mandaza said although Sadc could play a role in resolving the problems Zimbabwe was facing, Parliament was one underutilised institution.

“Appeals to Sadc and the regional bodies are also important, but historically, Sadc did little or nothing about the Zimbabwean situation given the declining influence and status of the regional organisation, more than a graphic illustration of the sordid conditions in which Zimbabwe finds itself, economically, politically and socially,” he said.

“Parliament is one key institution which can be used to resolve the problem. We have opposition MPs in Parliament. What are they doing to push for electoral reforms in that House?”

Political analyst Eldred Masunungure described Chamisa’s plea to Sadc as “symbolic”.

He said: “I do not think those regional bodies have much appetite to involve themselves in the Zimbabwean situation. Such calls for solidarity can be made symbolic so that at least they can say they did something in their call for reforms.”

War Vets Target Chamisa

By- War veterans said they would crush the opposition and NGOs defending Emerson Mnangagwa.
.
Speaking during a Press conference in Harare, war veterans secretary Douglas Mahiya accused opposition parties and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of being used by Western countries to effect regime change in Zimbabwe.

Malema Urinates On Queen Elizabeth’s Coffin

By- South Africa’s second-largest opposition political party, EFF led by Julius Malema, says it will not mourn the death of the British Queen, Elizabeth II, as she never apologised for the plunder of African resources and the brutal killings of millions of African people by the British during the colonial era.

“We Do Not Mourn Queen Elizabeth”: LEAD

LEAD PRESS Statement on the death of Queen Elizabeth

9 September 2022

Last evening Queen Elizabeth the Second died. She was the ceremonial head of state of several countries that were colonized by the United Kingdom and presided over several atrocities against Africans for decades and looting of precious minerals in several countries.

As Labour Economists and Afrikan Democrats (LEAD) we do not feel compelled to mourn her death. If she was sincere about humanity, she would never had accepted heads of spirit mediums from Zimbabwe as trophies nor to have them exhibited in a museum in UK.

As a Pan Afrikanist Party that is pushing for the unification of Africa, we see this as an opportune time to demand reparations for all that was looted from all African countries by the Windsor Royal Family and the repatriation of the heads of the Zimbabwean spirit mediums that continue to lie in UK museums.

As if that was not enough the same royal family sanctioned all the actions of Cecil John Rhodes who plundered Northern and Southern Rhodesia now known as Zambia and Zimbabwe respectively.

The late Queen Elizabeth benefitted from the sweat and blood of Africans, built a fortune from looted mineral resources from Africa. Presided over millions of atrocities and never apologized nor acknowledged the hand of the royal family in the destabilization of several countries around the globe. Ironically, many Africans who have their very own who were brutally murdered and impoverished by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Queen Elizabeth’s death should be a damasene moment for several Africans who continously fight their own leaders trying to please imperialists.

We only have one continent that truly belongs to us as Africans and we need to protect it and save it from neocolonialism. Our self determination was distorted, our culture desecrated and our identity stolen. It is time to restore our identity as African people.

Chamisa Heads For Chinhoyi

By- The opposition CCC leader Nelson Chamisa will be in Chinhoyi this Sunday for a thank you rally.

CCC will hold the meeting after the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), for the first time in many years, permitted them to have a rally.

CCC, arguably the country’s most prominent opposition party, is set to celebrate its victories in recent by-elections, where the party won five out of six council wards.
Interim CCC Mashonaland West chairman Ralph Magunje confirmed the rally.

According to a clearance letter from Officer Commanding Makonde police district, Chief Superintendent M. Ngorima, addressed to Magunje, the event will go ahead on 11 September but the convenors must abide by strict conditions. Part of the letter reads:

Among conditions issued by police, CCC must adhere to strict COVID-19 containment protocols, which include wearing face masks.
ZRP also ordered CCC officials to desist from political hate speech calculated to provoke a breach of peace.
Police also instructed the organisers of the event to avoid exceeding the regulated time. Reads the letter:
If the above conditions are not followed, the gathering shall be dispersed and the organisers arrested.

Businessman Arrested Over Internet Insults

Revenge gone horribly wrong!
In a nasty turn of events, a Harare businessman has been arrested after he recorded an audio and

video clip which went viral on various social media platforms in which he was harassing and threatening a Bulawayo lawyer and warning people against dealing with her UK-based husband who is also a truck supplier, claiming his company was selling non-existent vehicles.

So messy are the threats that Chamunorwa Chinenyanga (32), a transport operator based in South Africa, sensationally claimed that Vivianah Chikomo of V Chikomo Law Chambers married her husband Dyson Dzapasi for money over love.

In the video, Chinenyanga is also accusing Dzapasi of disappearing after taking his money. Dzapasi is reportedly a representative of Carsden UK Trucks.

Chinenyanga’s threats to Chikomo were heard when he appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Busani Sibanda charged with cyber-bullying and harassment as defined in Section 164B of the Cyber Security and Data Protection Act Chapter 11:12.

He was not asked to plead and was remanded out of custody to September 19 on $50 000 bail.

Allegations against Chinenyanga are that on 20 May 2022 he recorded an audio and video clip while threatening and bullying Chikomo.

It is reported that living true to his threats he allegedly posted the audio and video clip on various WhatsApp groups in Bulawayo before they went viral.

It is alleged that on 27 May 2022 Chinenyanga again recorded another video clip while accusing Dzapasi of selling non-existent vehicles.

He claimed that Dzapasi had since disappeared and was no longer reachable. The video clip which went viral after it was posted on various WhatsApp groups says:

“Makadi hama neshamwari, ini ndiri mu-transport industry based in South Africa. Pamba pandasiya trailer yangu apa ndipo panogara V Chikomo ane Law Chambers muno muBulawayo.

The matter was reported to the police and investigations led to the arrest of Chinenyanga and his subsequent appearance in court. -B Metro

Russian Woman Wants to Implicate Biti

The assault trial of Tendai Biti resumed today with him claiming that Harare magistrate Mrs Vongai Muchuchuti was making biased rulings and decisions, which were breaching his rights.

Biti, who is facing charges of manhandling a Zimbabwean investor Mrs Tatiana Aleshina at the Harare Magistrates Court, said this while submitting reasons why he wanted his matter referred to the Constitutional Court.

The CCC legislator had been making this application for the past two months and is still continuing.

And for these past two months, Biti has been repeating what he had been saying in this application.

He is claiming that the court has persistently abused his constitutional rights.

“Some of the rulings being made by this court are an insult to my constitutional rights,” he said.

The matter was deferred to September 15 for continuation.

Biti recently told the court that he was surprised why his matter was moved from the provincial to the regional court.

“I was shocked about three things, my matter was taken from the provincial court to the regional court under unclear grounds,” he said.

Biti said his matter was taken from Court 3 to the Anti-corruption Court also under unclear circumstances.

“I was also shocked why my matter was taken away from Court 3 to be handled by a senior magistrate Mr Micheal Reza who is deputy prosecutor general,” he said.

However, during the previous sitting, Mr Reza also informed the court that Biti’s application for recusal of the magistrate was not procedural, and lacked merit.

Mr Reza put it to Biti during cross-examination that he abandoned his application for referral of the matter to the Constitutional Court after the court ruled that his matter be heard on a daily basis to ensure progress.

Mr Reza further informed Biti that if he had any reservations with the court’s ruling, he should have appealed to the superior courts rather than applying for the magistrate’s recusal.

However, Biti insisted that he wanted Mrs Muchuchuti to recuse herself, further alleging that they are protagonists, a position that was dismissed in today’s ruling.

In her ruling to hear the matter on a daily basis Mrs Muchuchuti highlighted that Biti’s application for referral of the matter to the Apex Court started on May 27, and up to date, the application is yet to conclude.

She said she needed to dispose of this matter within a reasonable timeframe, hence the adoption of interventions where the matter will be heard daily with immediate effect.

The magistrate further reiterated that the accused should be reminded that he is the accused in this matter and should give it priority over other matters.

“With the rate we are managing this case it means the accused will need another two months to finish his application,” said Mrs Muchuchuti.– Herald

Chelsea Dismiss Coach

Chelsea have have sacked coach Thomas Tuchel following the team’s disappointing 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb in the opening Group E encounter of the UEFA Champions League in Croatia.

The result saw the Blues suffering their third defeat in seven games in all competitions this season.

The club had spent heavily in the just ended transfer window when they brought the likes of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, and Marc Cucurella, Wesley Fofana and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

A statement by the club reads: Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Thomas Tuchel.

On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club. Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.

As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.

Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the Club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach.

There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made.

Tuchel was appointed by Chelsea in January 2021 and had an immediate impact, winning the Champions League in his first season at the club.

In 2021-22, Chelsea reached both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup final as they secured a third-place finish in the Premier League.

Tuchel spearheaded Chelsea at a time of uncertainty for the club as Roman Abramovich departed as owner last sea son.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Critical Reflections on Nelson Chamisa’s Leadership Style and Approach: Justice Mavedzenge

By Justice Alfred Mavedzenge

Introduction

The pro-democracy movement in Zimbabwe is trapped between a rock and a hard surface. The rock is the repressive ZANU PF regime who continue to use violence, intimidation and weaponize the legal and security system to punish and persecute legitimate political dissenters. The hard surface is the populistic, autocratic and weak leadership of Nelson Chamisa, as demonstrated by the manner in which he is running the main opposition party- Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC).

Many of us have thoroughly and consistently scrutinized ZANU PF’s autocratic rule and we must continue to do so as a way of holding the government of the day accountable. However, we must admit that we have (to some extent) abdicated from openly and objectively scrutinizing the manner in which Nelson Chamisa is managing the CCC. The manner in which Nelson Chamisa manages the CCC is a matter of public concern and public interest, which we cannot afford to ignore as scholars and citizens. There are two fundamental reasons for this.

First is that the CCC and Nelson Chamisa are the main opposition and a potential government in waiting. If we are to build a genuinely democratic society, we must be courageous enough to subject the CCC and Nelson Chamisa to democratic accountability now, so that they get accustomed to a culture of democratic accountability before they are in government. Secondly, scrutinizing and subjecting the CCC and Nelson Chamisa to democratic accountability will strengthen them as party or a movement and ensure that Zimbabwe has a strong opposition. No democracy can survive without a strong and vibrant democratic opposition. It is from this premise that I offer this installment. I can only hope that the CCC and its leader, my brother in Christ Nelson Chamisa will treat and receive this as advice from a Zimbabwean who is passionate about building genuine democracy. I also hope that my colleagues in the academia and other public intellectuals will react to this installment by publishing their joinders and replies to contest (rather than just agree with) the views I express in this installment. Our prospects for a democratic society can only be enriched as a result of such robust contestation of ideas.

Chamisa and the contextual realities of the Zimbabwean political environment

Before I offer a critique of my dear brother Nelson Chamisa, it is important to state certain realities which constitute the context within which the CCC exists. I believe that my brother Nelson Chamisa is both a product and a victim of some of these contextual realities. It is impossible to understand and critique him without looking at the context which has both formed and victimized him, politically.

First is that Zimbabwe is a two-party state, as has been rightly observed by other scholars, including my friend Philani Zamchiya. At any given moment in the history of elections, the country has been dominated by two parties. Since the early 2000s, the county’s electoral politics has been dominated by ZANU PF and MDC.  Currently, it is dominated by ZANU PF and CCC. Outside of these two parties, it has proven quite difficult for any person to gain political traction. Out of fear of being pushed into political obscurity, many inside ZANU PF and CCC tend to avoid being critical of the leaders of their respective political parties. The existence of a two-party system in Zimbabwe has created a situation where party leaders, including opposition leaders end up operating as demi-gods under whose wings everyone is desperate to congregate, because there seems to be no political life outside of these two parties.

The second reality is that currently, the conditions for a free and fair election do not exist in Zimbabwe and it is highly unlikely that there will be any substantial positive reforms which will be undertaken to improve these conditions ahead of the 2023 elections. Under the ZANU PF (mis)rule, government corruption and economic mismanagement is rife and has resulted in a debilitating socio-economic crisis.  This tragic state of affairs is taken advantage of by the opposition to deflect attention and public scrutiny of their internal processes and election strategies. Whenever one criticizes the opposition for its internal weaknesses, their reaction is to quickly remind those criticizing them that the problem is not the opposition but is ZANU PF misrule. “People must always remember that the CCC is a solution to the problem. We are not the problem. The problem is ZANU PF and citizens must not allow to be distracted from that”: This has become a common statement uttered by CCC leaders and their associates whenever the CCC is called to account for its own blunders, own goals and shortcomings. This is a strategy of diversion and deflection, carefully employed to hide from being held accountable for the own goals which the party so frequently scores. This culture did not start with the current crop of CCC functionaries. They may have perfected it, but this culture can be traced back to ZANU PF. Whenever they are called to account for the socio-economic crisis, ZANU PF politicians blame sanctions and everyone else but will never accept responsibility for their part. Similarly, the opposition is not prepared to accept that whilst ZANU PF’s autocratic rule is a serious problem, it is not the only problem. The manner in which the opposition mismanages its internal processes is also a serious problem which, if left unaddressed further weakens their capacity to survive and challenge ZANU PF’s autocratic rule.

The third reality is that generally, as Zimbabweans, we are not tolerant of divergent views, including on politics. Whenever one expresses a divergent view, that person is targeted for harassment including through vicious cyber bullying. This culture of intolerance may be a result of living under a repressive political regime for more than 42 years. As a result, many amongst us may have now begun (subconsciously) to mimic the intolerance of those who have been suppressing us for the past 42 years. The culture of intolerance may also be a result of desperation for political change, which causes people not to be receptive to any views that challenge the dominant thinking, or which exposes the weaknesses of “their best foot forward” in the quest for political change. This phenomenon is not new.  There is a story in the Book of Jeremiah similar to our situation. When faced with an invasion by the Babylonians, the only message which the Israelites wanted to hear were prophecies which confirmed that God would give them victory over the Babylonians. They were not prepared to hear anything different. When Jeremiah, the real Prophet of God, was sent with the word from God to tell them that they were surely going to be conquered by the Babylonians because of their sinful nature and disobedience to God, they arrested and even attempted to kill Jeremiah. He was called all sorts of names, including being labeled a traitor. Similarly, this is how generally Zimbabweans from across the political divide treat those who critique their political leaders. There is a serious lack of a democratic culture, not just amongst those in government but the general population too.

The fourth reality is that Zimbabweans generally are attracted to political leaders who maintain a messianic outlook. Since colonialism, a significant part of the population has been trapped in a perpetual search for a political messiah. They seem to be searching for someone to “save” them rather than to “serve” them. This is why in ZANU PF they refer to their leaders as “chefs”- a terminology which at some point had also creeped into the MDC circles. When Robert Mugabe took over and led the country into independence, he was generally perceived as the messiah who had come to save and redeem Zimbabwe from the shackles of British colonialism. For this reason, the majority of the population were not prepared to hear of Mugabe’s evil Gukurahundi massacres in Matebeleland and Midlands provinces. Their messiah could not do any wrong! They only realised much later that “their messiah” was now the albatross hanging around their necks. By that time, Mugabe had completely captured all the organs of the ZANU PF party and institutions of the State.  When Morgan Tsvangirai rose to fame in the early 2000s as the leader of the then opposition MDC, he was largely perceived as the Moses who had been sent to rescue the country and lead it to its promised land of Canaan. Various songs were composed by artists to assert and reinforce this perception. Many were not prepared to entertain any views which critiqued Morgan Tsvangirai’s style of leadership. When Nelson Chamisa took over the MDC reigns in 2018, he was (and still) is perceived as “the Joshua of our time”, who is taking over from Moses to lead the people to the promised democratic society. Interestingly, Emmerson Mnangagwa is perceived the same way by his supporters, after taking over from Mugabe in 2017. These perceptions shape the extent to which the people are prepared to be honest in the way they engage with their political leaders. To some extent, these perceptions also nudge and encourage political leaders to behave as demi-gods. In both ZANU PF and CCC, there is always a legion of politicians who are eagerly waiting to worship the ground that Emmerson Mnangagwa and Nelson Chamisa walk on.

The problematic nature of Chamisa’s leadership style

It is in this context that Nelson Chamisa has emerged as the main opposition leader, enjoying support from across the country and across generations. His populistic and autocratic style of leadership is shaped and encouraged by these contextual realities namely: the enormous power he enjoys over his colleagues as a result of the two-party state, intolerance and the lack of a democratic culture amongst the general population, and the electorate’s affinity for messianic politicians and individual centered politics.

My brother Nelson Chamisa is an astute political scientist and a highly skilled orator with exceptional ability to speak in ways which capture the imaginations of a population that is in search of a political messiah. Yet, Chamisa might have now become the albatross hanging around the pro-democracy movement, and a potential stumbling block against progress towards the attainment of a genuine democratic change yearned by many in Zimbabwe. Less than 9 months towards the 2023 election, Nelson Chamisa is still running the CCC without any formal structures and without a constitution. The party is financially broke and does not have an organizationally driven fundraising strategy. He operates and runs the movement through unelected secret structures. There are no formally recognised national leadership positions, except his role as the President of CCC and those he has appointed into positions such as the party spokesperson and other functionaries. There are no internal procedures for decision making. He holds meetings with his lieutenants only when he wants. He makes party decisions without consulting anyone outside of his inner circle. Members of his inner circle know that they serve at his pleasure and therefore they are unable to engage with him critically. In fact, they are so insecure in their positions that they feel that they must outshine each other to demonstrate their loyalty to Nelson. Sometimes when they describe Nelson Chamisa, you may be excused if you confuse them for ZANU PF supporters describing their dear leader Emmerson Mnangagwa.  This state of affairs undermines not only CCC’s prospects of winning the 2023 elections but prospects for a genuine substantive democratic change even if CCC wins the 2023 elections.

Undermining prospects of winning 2023 elections

Operating a party or a movement in this manner will only create and promote internal fissures, disgruntlement and demobilization as other leaders, at both the national and community levels feel that the party has become Chamisa’s personal fiefdom. CCC needs everyone to put their hands on deck to prepare for an election that is going to be held under very tough conditions in less than 9 months. Given the way Chamisa is running and leading the party, it will be very difficult to get everyone to put their hands on deck as some of the leaders, especially those who genuinely believe in democracy may have already started to take a back seat. It is not because these leaders do not aspire for political change or because they are selfishly seeking positions. They simply do not want to be used as “forks and knives” in what appears to be Chamisa’s personal kitchen where he single handedly decides what is on the menu. My good brother Nelson Chamisa often says “toda hugaro not zvigaro mantra” which loosely translates to “CCC is a movement which is not focused on creating positions for individuals but creating a vehicle to deliver change which will result in better livelihoods for all”. But what Nelson Chamisa forgets is that a political party or a movement is essentially an organisation. For any organisation to be effective, competent people must be appointed into various positions of responsibility. The manner in which those people are appointed must incorporate certain minimum democratic principles such as transparency, accountability, fairness, rationality and stakeholder consultation. It is not possible to achieve these without a clear constitution and formal structures adopted and endorsed by the membership through a democratic process.

Some have argued that Chamisa must single handedly appoint structures or avoid appointing structures in order to protect the party from infiltration by ZANU PF. These people have not cared to explain how the CCC can still remain a democratic movement when its structures, organs, leadership and internal rules are determined by one person or a clique. They have also ignored the fact that already Chamisa’s inner circle is heavily infiltrated by people whose history in and connection to ZANU PF is not a matter of guess work.  Proposals have been made on ways of protecting the party from infiltration without undermining the democratic nature and outlook of the organisation. But these have deliberately been ignored because the clique that has captured Chamisa (possibly on behalf of ZANU PF) would like to retain control over the party. My brother Nelson Chamisa favors the status quo as it gives him the unrestrained leeway to organize and run the party the way he feels like and without anyone questioning him.

The doomed prospects for a genuine substantive democratic change even if CCC wins the 2023 elections

Without elected structures at national and local levels which hold the party leaders accountable and make collective decisions with the leaders, and without a constitution adopted by party members, the CCC is not a democratic collective. A coalition of people or organisations cannot be described as a democratic collective when all of them have been appointed by a single person and their rules of engagement are determined by one person and not in terms of a rules book that is adopted by the membership. This spells doom for genuine democratic change in Zimbabwe even if Chamisa were to win elections and take over from ZANU PF in 2023. He would have won the elections without a democratic collective, and it would be very difficult to expect him to be democratic as a head of government. A politician who obtains power through individual effort rather than a democratic collective effort is unlikely to respect and honor the significance of collective governance when inside government. Similarly, a politician who does not respect institutions when they are outside of government is unlikely to start doing so when they get into power. If Nelson Chamisa is not subjected to democratic collectivism and democratic accountability while outside of government, it is highly unlikely that he will accept to be subjected to those principles when he wields governmental power.

Fear and Denialism

Many are not prepared to critique Chamisa’s leadership style and political approach because doing so is quite risky in a two-party context and where the man is perceived by the large section of the masses as their political messiah. Those close to him in the party would rather suffer quietly because to speak out against Chamisa will surely result in one being shunted into the political dustbin. Several have already been pushed out of the cock pit. Some argue that criticizing Chamisa’s leadership style at this point and holding him accountable would undermine prospects for democratic change in 2023. The assumption made by those who argue like this is that there are prospects for a democratic political change in 2023, without addressing certain of Chamisa’s leadership deficiencies and stopping him from scoring own goals. Others argue that Chamisa is the best foot forward and therefore he must be supported blindly. But what if the best foot forward is broken? Will it still take you to your desired destination without fixing it? Others argue that all that is need is to defeat ZANU PF in the 2023 elections and then the rest of the issues can be sorted out. As I mentioned above, I do not think that a politician who does not respect democracy while outside of government will become a champion of democracy as a government leader.

This article has been written by Justice Alfred Mavedzenge, in his personal capacity. He is a constitutional law academic committed to the building of democracy in Zimbabwe and Africa.

One of the stalwarts of the democratic struggle who stood in principles and unshaken during the tough times of the struggle.

Many people dither and oscillate when it’s get tougher.

Pressure Group Confronts Government Over Deepening Economic Crisis

The Communities In Action Platform (CAP) penned down reflections on the economy to alert the responsible authority (government) and bring awareness to the general citizenry on the deteriorating state of the Zimbabwean economy in August 2022.

The statement was a product of the lived realities that Zimbabweans are going through and also to dismiss the cosmetic surgeries being done by state propagandists, the state media.

The reality is that the government did not need a reminder on the state of the economy and also the people of this great nation do not need an awareness on the state of the economy as they live through the economic, social and political turbulence every single minute, however as promised by CAP that change can be slow and ponderous but when things come to a head action will be sudden and cataclysmic confronting previously unshakeable systems and now at this very moment things have come to a head.

Chronic poverty has now torn through any remnants of sanity and hope that our people had and collectively we cannot continue to normalize the abnormal, the time for citizen agency has now risen and the people have spoken not in tongues but in definitive and clear terms.

Zimbabwe is now at the top of the list in the world but for the wrong reasons, the year on year inflation is now at 484% for the month of August, the prices of basic commodities have risen steeply, service delivery is now crippled and the situation has now been compounded with opening of schools nationwide that has seen teachers being sent back to the modern day slavery they call jobs, students being sent to schools that now resemble refugee camps and parents back to squeezing out abnormal tuition from the little or no resources.

Zimbabwe is now burning and the ones who are supposed to be the drivers are ignorantly declaring no crisis and have adopted the ostrich mentality of burying their hands in the sand hoping the crisis will magically disappear.

Starting on Monday 12 September 2022, Communities In Action Platform will be engaging the government through mass protests on the state of the economy, these protests are an act of defiance and a direct confrontational call against this “see no evil, hear no evil and do nothing about it,” approach from the government of Zimbabwe.

The nation has a gallivanting President, an incompetent finance minister, an ignorant health minister and a kakistocratic government that fail to reconcile reasoning to reality.

CAP calls upon the citizens of Zimbabwe to rise up and stand their ground against the tyranny and chronic suffering they are being subjected to, ours is no longer a nation of productivity and hope but one of despair and chronic poverty whose results we see every single day in our homes, our community and our jobs.

The focus should not be on baton sticks for the pain that we experience from that, it is nothing compared to the pain of sleeping on an empty stomach, the focus should not be on jail cells but should be on the discomfort of losing your loved ones to treatable diseases just because our medical facilities have no medicines and because doctors and nurses are on strike.

The fear that strikes every individual when they hear of protests should be nothing compared to the fear that goes through us when we face the everyday certain of going to a home with no food and hungry children.

The hope and fight for a better Zimbabwe begins with us, those in power are not deaf but they just require us to speak more loudly, clearer and directly to them and in unity we can achieve more, stand your ground and demand your life back, if asking is not working then demand.

Army Defends Fresh Coup Plot Leader

By- The Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI) has defended its senior member Colonel Leonard Matambo arrested for smuggling 31 AK-47 rifles.

ZDI wrote another letter to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) absolving the accused on the grounds he was authorised to write letters relating to the consignments.

The State, represented by Tafara Chirambira, had questioned the letter written by Matambo to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) to release the guns.
But ZDI wrote another letter to the NPA saying Matambo’s role was to write such letters as the one submitted to Zimra.
However, upon submission of the letter before magistrate Stanford Mambanje, the State further questioned the authenticity of the letter authored by Air Commodore Mutizwa, whose whereabouts were said to be unknown by the police.
“The letter they purport saying there is no case, I have seen a copy of that letter (sic). This court needs that person to come and testify on the letter. We will cross-examine him if it is genuine or not. This is a fundamental issue, the crucial evidence being tendered from the bar need to be scrutinised,” Chirambira said.
“The court must summon this person to come and testify on the letter. And we will oppose tendering of that document.”
However, Matambo’s lawyer Tonderai Bhatasara said Mutizwa had no problem testifying in court in relation to the matter.
Bhatasara then asked for the matter to be adjourned to allow him to arrive and testify.
Upon arrival of Mutizwa, Bhatasara filed an application to have the proceedings of the matter held in camera saying the witness was a high-ranking Defence ministry official and his testimony could include facts that were regarded as official secrets in the army.
“Due to the nature of this matter, our witness is a senior member of ZDI who is the most senior and that there will be likelihood that during the proceedings, evidence might be solicited which may compromise the defence and security (sic). We ask for everyone to go out except legal counsel of the accused and State,” Bhatasara submitted.
The prosecutor, however, did not oppose the application or consent.
Magistrate Mambanje then asked the parties to postpone the case to today saying he needed to make a proper ruling on the matter since it was of public interest.
Bhatasara opposed the postponement saying the liberty of the accused person was at stake.
Mambanje postponed the matter to today.
Meanwhile, Matambo’s accomplice Gugulethu Mabhena, who was arrested in Beitbridge, had his bail denied by the court in Beitbridge. Newsday

Zimbabweans Mobilise Mass Protests Against Mnangagwa

By- Zimbabweans from all walks of life are mobilising to protest against the Emmerson Mnangagwa government.

Citizens are frustrated by the country’s deteriorating political and human rights situations.

They are also unhappy with the persecution of opposition leaders and activists and banning opposition political gatherings.

Since the beginning of the year, the government has heightened its clampdown on the opposition, with several opposition party members and workers union leaders arrested for demanding respect for human rights and the rule of law.

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislators Job Sikhala (Zengeza West) and Godfrey Sithole (Chitungwiza North) as well as several other CCC activists have been denied bail at the courts on numerous occasions in the past three months in what has been viewed as political persecution.

As the political tensions escalate ahead of the 2023 elections, a group of political activists and rights defenders has threatened to stage mass protests.
Fearing victimisation, the activists are anonymously circulating fliers on social media encouraging a shutdown in protest over the deteriorating human rights situation.
In one of the fliers, the activists call for a national shutdown to force the Judiciary to stop unlawful detention of opposition politicians.
Human rights lawyer Wilfred Mandinde said citizens had the right to protest as long as they were in compliance with the dictates of the Constitution, but the right had been suppressed by government.
“The way protests are managed by authorities has made people believe that they are unlawful, yet they are enshrined in the Constitution,” Mandinde said.
“As long as they feel that they should speak against injustices, citizens can demonstrate against the establishment without being harassed or threatened. “
Political activist and Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume said “peaceful and lawful” protests were the only remaining tool available for citizens to force authorities to uphold constitutionalism.
“The issue of the deteriorating political and economic situations in the country is about what the citizens can do about it,” Ngarivhume said.
“In accordance with the Constitution, citizens have the right to protest peacefully. If the protests are well organised and gather momentum, the authorities will definitely Act. People have tried many other means to force the government to govern in a democratic way. They have prayed, petitioned and gone to the courts to compel the authorities to respect the rule of law, but it has failed. But they still have to speak and the only way they can do is to take to the streets.”
CCC leader Nelson Chamisa said repression had forced people to shun demonstrations.
Chamisa was speaking during an interview with a South African radio station last week.
He said: “I am sure you know the meaning of the repression. We have lost lives on account of protests in this country. You know what happened with the shooting of innocent citizens. You know the experience of apartheid. It’s the same situation that we have here. Zimbabweans continue to protest and demonstrate freely and peacefully asking for good governance, but the challenge continues.” Newsday

Mnangagwa Dressed-Down In Rwanda

By-The President Paul Kagame told President Emmerson Mnangagwa to stop blaming other nations and instead sort out politics in his country.

Kagame challenged Mnangagwa that charity should start at home.

He said this in a meeting held on the sidelines of Rwanda’s current Africa Green Revolution Forum (AGRF).

He said:

You need to work hard to change the perception, you cannot bribe your way through it, you cannot just sweet talk some people, even if they say ok, we agree with you, things will not be fine.

The way the people of their own country feel about what is happening, it will always come out and before you even convince anyone from outside so that they cannot have a wrong perception about you, convince your own people.

Make sure they are with you and say look, whatever you are saying, we feel there is change, so concentrate on making sure your people are involved, they are benefiting, they can themselves push back on this story of perception.

If the country is hungry and people have nothing to eat, they are people who have nothing to eat and when the outsiders are saying it, do not go against them and say why are you saying that my country is starving? When actually people are starving, they are starving.

This comes when recent statistics have shown that thousands of Zimbabweans are leaving the country fleeing from the biting economy.

While addressing the media on the eve of Rwanda’s 25th liberation commemorations in Kigali in 2019, Kagame said:

The Zimbabweans are irreplaceable in dealing with their own country. It has to be practical.

I hope all of us understand. Even for us, we want to show we want results. We don’t want anybody to give us credit for nothing.

So, for us, it is to say we can be with you, and work with you and share whatever we can from outside but it’s a responsibility of the Zimbabweans as has been of Rwandans. When it comes to Rwanda, there is no question about it.

We want to do something and convince our own people, later on, convince these outsiders who, or sometimes who would never be convinced. The moment you are with your people, it’s a done deal.

Mnangagwa, like his predecessor, the late Robert Mugabe, have enjoyed respect internationally while they face criticism from Zimbabweans back home.

Chelsea To Name New Coach

Chelsea has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with the top candidate to replace Thomas Tuchel.

Tuchel was sacked on Wednesday following the team’s disappointing 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb in the opening Group E encounter of the UEFA Champions League in Croatia.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Brighton coach Graham Potter has verbally accepted to become the next Blues coach.

Potter caught the eye of Chelsea owners with Brighton’s style of play and is regarded as an impressive young coach.

The Blues will discuss with Brighton for the compensation fee and all the final details to complete the gaffer’s appointment.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Zemura Speaks On Bournemouth Contract

Jordan Zemura says he is not reading much into his contract situation and has his focus directed to helping the team win the games.

Zemura has less than ten months left on his Bournemouth contract after joining the side in 2019 following a successful trial stint.

Previous talks for a new deal stalled and that forced the club to activate the one-year option that expires in June next year.

Zemura has revealed that he feels he does not need to focus on off the field matters, instead paying full attention to his performances on the pitch.

The Zimbabwean defender told the Daily Echo: “I’m just focusing on my football, just doing what I need to do on the pitch.

“And then, I let everyone else take care of that – I’m not needing to focus on that.

“But I’m here now and I’m enjoying my football.”

Zemura has so far made five starts in Cherries’ first six league games so far this campaign.

Meanwhile, according to Spotrac, the Bournemouth star is the lowest paid player in the EPL on a weekly wage of just £385.

This is in huge contrast with stars like of Cristiano Ronaldo, Kevin de Bruyne and Mohamed Salah who are some of the best paid players in world football, earning well over £300,000 per week.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Key Hygiene Tips

Half of health care facilities worldwide lack basic hygiene services with water and soap or alcohol-based hand rub where patients receive care and at toilets in these facilities, according to the latest Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) report by WHO and UNICEF.

Around 3.85 billion people use these facilities, putting them at greater risk of infection, including 688 million people who receive care at facilities with no hygiene services at all.

“Hygiene facilities and practices in health care settings are non-negotiable.

Their improvement is essential to pandemic recovery, prevention and preparedness. Hygiene in health care facilities cannot be secured without increasing investments in basic measures, which include safe water, clean toilets, and safely managed health care waste,” said Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health.

“I encourage Member States to step up their efforts to implement their 2019 World Health Assembly commitment to strengthen water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in health care facilities, and to monitor these efforts.”

The latest report, “Progress on WASH in health care facilities 2000–2021: special focus on WASH and infection prevention and control”, has for the first time established this global baseline on hygiene services – which assessed access at points of care as well as toilets – as more countries than ever report on critical elements of WASH services in their hospitals and other health centres. For hygiene, data are now available for 40 countries, representing 35% of the world’s population, up from 21 countries in 2020 and 14 in 2019.

The newly established global estimate reveals a clearer and more alarming picture of the state of hygiene in health care facilities. Though 68% of health care facilities had hygiene facilities at points of care, and 65% had handwashing facilities with water and soap at toilets, only 51% had both and therefore met the criteria for basic hygiene services. Furthermore, 1 in 11 (9%) of health care facilities globally have neither.

“If health care providers don’t have access to a hygiene service, patients don’t have a health care facility,” said Kelly Ann Naylor, UNICEF Director of WASH and Climate, Environment, Energy, and Disaster Risk Reduction (CEED).

“Hospitals and clinics without safe water and basic hygiene and sanitation services are a potential death trap for pregnant mothers, newborns, and children. Every year, around 670 000 newborns lose their lives to sepsis. This is a travesty – even more so as their deaths are preventable.”

The report notes that contaminated hands and environments play a significant role in pathogen transmission in health care facilities and the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Interventions to increase access to handwashing with water and soap and environmental cleaning form the cornerstone of infection prevention and control programmes and are crucial to providing quality care, particularly for safe childbirth.
Coverage of WASH facilities is still uneven across different regions and income groupings:

Facilities in sub-Saharan Africa are lagging on hygiene services. While three-quarters (73%) of health care facilities in the region overall have alcohol-based hand rub or water and soap at points of care, only one-third (37%) have handwashing facilities with water and soap at toilets.

The vast majority (87%) of hospitals have hand hygiene facilities at points of care, compared to 68% of other healthcare facilities.
In the Least Developed Countries, only 53% of health care facilities have access on-premises to a protected water source.

To compare, the global figure is 78% with hospitals (88%) doing better than smaller health care facilities (77%), and the figure for eastern and south-eastern Asia is 90%. Globally, around 3% of health care facilities in urban areas and 11% in rural areas had no water service.

Of the countries with available data, 1 in 10 health care facilities globally had no sanitation service.

The proportion of health care facilities with no sanitation services ranged from 3% in Latin America and the Caribbean and in eastern and south-eastern Asia to 22% in sub-Saharan Africa. In the Least Developed Countries, just 1 in 5 (21%) had basic sanitation services in health care facilities.
The data further reveals that many health care facilities lack basic environmental cleaning and safe segregation and disposal of health care waste.
The report is being launched at World Water Week taking place in Stockholm, Sweden.

The annual conference, which runs from 23 August to 1 September, explores new ways to tackle humanity’s greatest challenges: from food security and health to agriculture, technology, biodiversity and climate.

Government Faces Mass Protests As Economic Turmoil Continues

CCC, Madhuku Sparring Continues

Tinashe Sambiri|President Nelson Chamisa’s CCC party has clashed with Professor Lovemore Madhuku over the latter’s remarks on Hon Job Sikhala’s incarceration.

Madhuku accused CCC of arrogance and the party responded by describing the NCA leader as a “dull professor.”

Below is CCC deputy spokesperson Gift Ostallos Siziba response to Professor Madhuku’s remarks:

In which constitutional democracy is bail negotiated between prosecutors & a political party?

Which constitutional democracy makes the grant of bail dependent on one’s political affiliation? Where would that leave the right to equal protection of the law? Stop gaslighting.

I suppose that Prof Madhuku in this instance, had either smoked or imbibed something very detrimental to his otherwise fine legal brains!

Zim Netball Team Captain Felisitas Kwangwa Re-Signs For English Side Surrey Storm

Surrey Storm is delighted to announce the re-signing of Zimbabwe Captain Felisitus Kwangwa and Storm GK Leah Middleton for the 2023 Superleague season!

Both Kwangwa and Middleton return in the duck egg blue and were quite the defensive combo last season.

After finishing strong towards the end of 2021, Kwangwa returned home to play in the African Championships and Pent series. Upon arrival ahead of the 2022 Superleague Kwangwa made it clear she was ready to take a starting role in the squad.

After missing Kwangwa for the opening games due to visa registrations, Head Coach Austin quickly identified the success of Middleton and Kwangwa controlling the circle on defence which led to shifting Middleton to GK and Felisitus to GD for the rest of the season.

Middleton, one of Storms most consistent players last season made an appearance in every game. The Goalkeeper racked up 82 deflections, 81 turnovers and 26 interceptions across the season.

Looking forward to being back at Sports Park: “I’m super excited to be back at Storm this season. Last season it was so rewarding to see our improvement within the group and I’m very keen to see how much more we can push as a franchise. Having the storm fans back in the building was immense, we definitely felt the love and for me personally I believe they play a massive part in our growth!”

Fan favourite and most improved winner Kwangwa commented: I’m grateful to be part of Storm family this coming season. The goal is always to be crowned the champions of 2023 season and that is what we will strive for.”

Head Coach Mikki Austin pleased with the defensive unit returning commented: We are excited to Welcome Leah middleton back to Surrey Storm for the third year. Leah gives us the presence within the defensive circle required within the VNSL Leah ended 2022 sitting 3rd in the VNSL for deflections. We look forward to continuing to work with Leah on her defensive game in 2023.

Felisitus worked tirelessly on her game throughout the season and reaped the rewards in court time. She is a relentless tracker with the ability to win ball when it counts, and I truly believe will continue to thrive into next season. We look forward to seeing what Felisitus can achieve.

President Chamisa’s Touching Statement On Deteriorating Health Services

Tinashe Sambiri|The people of Zimbabwe are suffering as a result of poor leadership in the country.

This was said by CCC leader President Nelson Chamisa.

He was commenting on the deteriorating health services in the country.

“Zimbabweans are a great people who do not willfully purpose to be a burden on SA’s health system. Zimbabwe’s neighbours should not have to carry the burden of poor leadership,” said President Chamisa.

He also commended Zimbabweans in the diaspora for tirelessly supporting relatives and friends in the country.

“APPRECIATION TWEET for Zimbabweans in the DIASPORA. Thank you for everything you are doing to support the cause and families in Zimbabwe. Your support has been phenomenal. You are special and awesome. You are the real deal. Ndimi mune yese! Yini elizibambileyo!#FakaPressure.”

Documentary Proving Chamisa Is The President Banned In Zimbabwe

The historic documentary that proves with graphic clarity that CCC leader, Nelson Chamisa is the president of Zimbabwe, has been banned.

Govg authorities have been called upon to lift the ban on the documentary film produced by Danish journalist Camilla Nielsson and not abuse censorship laws for political ends ahead of next year’s general election.

The Committee to Protect Journalists mid last month announced in a statement saying:

Danish journalist Camilla Nielsson, pictured here in 2015, is the creator of the film “President,” which is banned Zimbabwean authorities. (AFP/Kena Betancur)

The film, which follows opposition leader Nelson Chamisa on the 2018 presidential election campaign trail, was banned by Zimbabwe’s Censorship and Entertainment Control Unit, the country’s censorship board housed under the Ministry of Home Affairs, because it violated the country’s censorship laws, according to a June 16 letter from the unit’s deputy director Oscar Mugomeri to Nielsson’s lawyer, Chris Mhike. Under the ban, the film, which news reports said premiered in the United States August 8, cannot be shown anywhere in Zimbabwe.

The letter, which CPJ reviewed, said the film violated of Section 10 (2)(b) of the Censorship and Entertainments Control Act, because it was “likely to be contrary to public order” and “to incite violence” ahead of the 2023 national elections, according to news reports.

The documentary details alleged rigging, intimidation, fraud, and political violence on the part of the ruling ZANU-PF (Zimbabwe African National Union–Patriotic Front) party in the 2018 elections, according to news reports. A date for Zimbabwe’s 2023 elections has yet to be set.

“Zimbabwe’s censorship board’s decision to ban the documentary film ‘President’ seems to be less about stopping incitement to violence and more about ensuring that an opposition political leader does not get free publicity ahead of a crucial election,” said Angela Quintal, CPJ’s Africa program coordinator, in New York. “Authorities must immediately reverse this apparent knee-jerk decision and uphold the right to freedom of expression and the public’s right to know at a crucial time in the country’s history.”

Mhike told CPJ via messaging app that on July 26, he appealed the ban to the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage and said he would bring his appeal to the Constitutional Court if all other avenues were exhausted.

Nielsson initially sought the censorship board’s approval on April 1 for the documentary to be aired in Zimbabwe and on April 25, in a letter to Mhike, reviewed by CPJ, Mugomeri stated that the film was not approved because some of the scenes violated Section 10 (2) of the censorship act.

In a June 2 letter, also reviewed by CPJ, Mhike asked the censorship board to cite specific portions of the film that allegedly violated the law, adding that not doing so would “be deemed unreasonable, unfair and therefore defective.”

In his reply on June 16, Mugomeri said the board had rejected the whole documentary in line with the same law. “The film has the potential to incite violence as the country is now preparing to go for elections in 2023,” Mugomeri’s letter stated.

CPJ called and texted Magomeri for comment but he did not pick up or respond.

Mliswa, Killer Zivhu Disagree With Madhuku Over Sikhala Remarks

Former Zanu PF legislators Killer Zivhu and Temba Mliswa have dismissed the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader Professor Lovemore Madhuku’s remarks that incarcerated CCC duo of Job Sikhala and Godfrey Sithole as well as 16 other party members will only be released through dialogue.

Madhuku ruffled feathers when he appeared in a video saying CCC was to blame for the continued incarceration of Sikhala and others as they refusal to join the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) made it difficult for them to negotiate with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

But Zivhu and Mliswa disagreed with him saying CCC must never negotiate for their release when the constitution is clear on the need for judicial independence.

“Prof Madhuku vanoda kuti CCC ikumbire bail ra Job Sikhala from a political Party, zvakafanana nekukumbira hembe dzako kumunhu wakumbira, his first condition ndoyokuti don’t report me to police, Advocate Mtetwa is a senior lawyer moti vakatadza here kukumbira from Prosecutors,” said Zivhu.

Mliswa also said negotiating with Mnangagwa to release Sikhala will be a strategic mistake.

“Prof Madhuku’s advice for a negotiated release for @JobSikhala1 has a faulty spine. It seeks to give credibility and respectability to a vengeful system. This is sheer persecution of a politician and united voices should speak out against that!

“The law is the law and should be applied fairly. In this case it’s not because there are hands behind the scenes pulling strings. However, negotiating with them is a strategic mistake that gives them standing for increased abuse,” said Mliswa.

Bill Antonio To Play For Mechelen Under 23

The 20-year-old Zimbabwean player Bill Antonio signed a two year contract with an option for another 2 years at Belgium’s KV Mechelen with the club announcing that he will play in their under 23.

“Bill is a fast right wing with an action in the feet,” says sporting director Tom Caluwé. “To integrate, he will play with our U23 at the beginning.”

Bill Antonio

Antonio comes over from the PE Academy in Harare and played his matches at Dynamos FC Harare. He also made his debut for the national team last year.

Army Absolves Soldier Arrested For Possession Of 31 AK47 Rifles

A court case in which senior Zimbabwe Defence Industries (ZDI) member Colonel Leonard Matambo stands accused of smuggling 31 AK-47 assault rifles into the country has taken a new twist after the ZDI wrote another letter to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) absolving the accused on grounds he was authorised to write letters relating to the consignments.

Mohadi Rallying Traditional Leaders Against NGOs

Former Vice President, Kembo Mohadi has continued his demonising non-governmental organisations (NGOs) operating in the country accusing them of agitating regime change.

Mohadi said the NGOs, with help from rogue traditional leaders, were plotting to oust President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration, and replacing it with “puppets of the West”.

Addressing traditional chiefs and headmen during a Kwekwe District Coordinating Committees (DCC) meeting last week, Mohadi claimed he was aware of the shenanigans by wayward chiefs and headmen.

“I have been reliably informed that there are some traditional leaders in here who are receiving US$100 and airtime from the NGOs.

“We know that non-governmental organisations will come to you with freebies and their little US dollars to bribe you against President (Emmerson) Mnangagwa. We do not expect traditional leaders to be sell-outs,” he said.

Kembo Mohadi with Zanu-PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa

“During the liberation struggle, did you know about NGOs? Were they present during the war? Was there no hunger at that time? So, why are they coming up now? We now have 3,000 NGOs in Zimbabwe, what is their job?”

“They come to you and give you mealie meal, cooking oil and freebies. After donating goodies to you they will ask what your government is doing concerning the situation. … they work on your brain to capture you,” Mohadi said.

In a bid to thwart the alleged plot against Zanu-PF, the former State VP, announced new perks for traditional leaders, who are set to receive a US$50 stipend, in addition to doubling of their monthly local currency-denominated allowances.

“We are going to double your allowances with an additional US$50 incentive for each and every one of you.”

Mohadi ordered party DCCs to work with chiefs and headmen in formulating proper grassroots structures of the former revolutionary party, which is engulfed by deep-seated factionalism.

As the party heads towards its October elective congress, the presidium of which Mohadi is a part, has attempted to downplay divisions at the top, urging party supporters and officials to unite ahead of the 2023 harmonised elections.

Mohadi has been moving around the country meeting traditional leaders and the main opposition party feels it is one of the new regime’s tactics to intimidate them into voting Zanu-PF.

Midlands Province Pushes To Have Wadyajena Expelled From Zanu PF

Senior Zanu PF officials in the Midlands province are reportedly baying for Gokwe-Nembudziya legislator Justice Mayor Wadyajena’s blood and are seeking his expulsion from the ruling party for his alleged involvement in the US$5,8 million fraud and money-laundering cases.

NewsDay, however, understands that President Emmerson Mnangagwa is allegedly protecting his long-time ally, saying the party can only expel Wadyajena after the court has concluded the case.

Wadyajena and three Cotton Company of Zimbabwe officials, currently on $100 000 bail each, were dragged to court to answer to charges of fraud and money laundering involving over US$5 million.

The case has reportedly prompted spirited efforts by senior Zanu PF officials in Mnangagwa’s Midlands home province to expel Wadyajena from the party for bringing the ruling party’s name into disrepute.

Sources in the party told NewsDay that veteran party officials July Moyo, Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and Mike Bimha approached Midlands provincial chairperson Larry Mavima asking him to write a letter expelling Wadyajena from the ruling party.

“The trio were unequivocal about their demands. They cited Priscah Mupfumira, who was fired in Mashonaland West for the same allegations,” the source said.

Former Tourism minister Mupfumira was expelled from the party after spending 21 days in remand prison after being arrested over corruption charges.

After incessant pressure from senior leaders, it is alleged Mavima consulted a senior politburo member in the province, Jorum Gumbo, who advised him to seek clearance from Mnangagwa.

“If they want to leave the party, they can. Wadyajena is not going anywhere. How do you expel someone based on allegations? We will only act after court processes if there is a conviction and an appeal is lodged and he loses,” Mnangagwa is said to have told Mavima.

Mnangagwa’s stance, largely seen to be an act of protecting Wadyajena, is said to have irked the senior party members, who have been accused of recently fighting to ensure the Gokwe-Nembudziya legislator falls out with their party leader.

The move also comes amid growing divisions in the party ahead of the 2023 elections as members jostle for positions and influence, often pitting Mnangagwa against other senior members.

Highly-placed sources said Wadyajena had stopped enjoying “unrestricted” access to Mnangagwa for a while before his arrest.

When contacted for comment, Mavhima professed ignorance over the issue.

“I am sick and tired of people who want to cause divisions in the party. There are some people who do not want unity in the party. They just want verbal exchanges serving their own interest. We are not going to be fighting, we are all united behind President Emmerson Mnangagwa,” he said.

Zanu PF political commissar Mike Bimha refuted the claims that he approached Mavima.

“Zanu PF is an organised party and it follows due processes. I cannot just pick up the phone and instruct a senior member like Mavima to expel someone. If there are issues, a disciplinary hearing will be conducted,” he said.

Contacted for comment, Gumbo said: “I met Mavima during the weekend at a party meeting in the Midlands. I did not speak to him about that issue and none of the people you mentioned spoke to me about that issue. I want to emphasise that I did not meet Mavima privately during or after the meeting in Midlands.”

Efforts to get a comment from Moyo and Mumbengegwi were fruitless as their phones were not being answered.

Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba could also not be reached for comment.

Confusion Reigns In CCC Over Continued Detention Of Sikhala And Madhuku Remarks

By Jane Mlambo| National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader Professor Lovemore Madhuku’s remarks that only dialogue will help set free Zengeza West legislator Job Sikhala and the Nyatsime 16 have exposed serious divisions in the Citizens Coalition for Change with party leaders expressing diverging views on the issue.

In a circulating video, Madhuku said “The issues of Job Sikhala and others could have been resolved by a dialogue process.”

“The CCC members are now victims of their political party that refuses to dialogue and refuses to be part of POLAD,” Madhuku added.

But CCC Spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere reacted angrily to Madhuku’s remarks saying he was being intellectually dishonest as the Prosecutor General was supposed to act impartially.

“With all due respect, this is intellectually dishonest, Professor Madhuku.

“Section 260 of the Constitution enshrines the independence of the Prosecutor-General. The PG must be impartial & is not subject to the direction or control of anyone, not even Emmerson Mnangagwa. That’s the law,” Mahere said.

Biti also weighed in saying Madhuku’s remarks were were shocking and regrettable.

“Lovemore Madhuku’s remarks are shocking and regrettable. They are so outrageous in their defiance of logic,” Biti said.

However, CCC Secretary General Charlton Hwende echoed Madhuku’s sentiments saying if the party does not act, Sikhala and the Nyatsime 16 will rot in jail, repeating the call for political engagement.

“The situation of our MPs Hon Job Sikhala &Godfrey Sithole plus the Nyatsime Cdes is very depressing. If we don’t act these Cdes will not be released soon and some might even die in detention. Political Prisoners requires either Mass Action or Political Engagement to be released,” said Hwende.

Sikhala and Sithole together with the Nyatsime 16 have been in remand prison for 86 days and have been denied bail five times.

They were arrested in June and charged with inciting public violence at the funeral of slain activist Moreblessing Ali.

Gokwe Mukuru Armed Robbers Arrested

By- Police have arrested five suspects, who are part of a nine-member gang that pounced on a Mukuru outlet in Gokwe and got away with cash and cellphones among other valuables in a daring raid.

The five have been arraigned on robbery charges.

Alpha Hove (20), Maxwell Moyo (25), Shepherd Chapanda (20) all from Kadoma, Viwe Mashiyi (33) from Harare and Aaron Mavhengere of Gokwe North were arrested by alert detectives with the assistance of the members of public.
The robbers reportedly got away with US$2 500 and $20 500 from the Mukuru outlet at Nembudziya Business Centre and US$120 and cellphones from Mutora Pharmacy.
Police are still hunting for the remaining four gangsters who managed to escape during the melee. Magistrate Mr Hillary Ndlovu remanded the gang to today for further remand.
According to papers before the court, on 30 August around 4PM, the gang pounced on Mukuru outlet at Nembudziya Business Centre in Gokwe North while armed with unregistered pistols, knives and catapults among other weapons.
“One of the accused persons produced a pistol and pointed it at Phineas Nisbet Sibanda who was manning the outlet demanding cash. One of the suspects drew a knife and stabbed Sibanda before they took US$2 500, ZW$20 500 and cellphones,” read court papers.

Upon realising that police detectives were parked outside and monitoring them the accused opened fire, injuring one of the officers.
As the others were exchanging fire with police details, one of the accused armed with a pistol, proceeded to Mutora Pharmacy and aimed a pistol at one Doctor Mutero demanding cash before he forcibly took US$120 and cellphones.
Some of the accused sped off in a getaway vehicle while some were apprehended by the detectives with the assistance of members of the public. Mr Malvern Nzombe represented the State.
