By A Correspondent| The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), has voiced alarm regarding the recent government announcement about introducing a structured currency. They assert that the plan should be deferred until citizens are allowed to express their views on the matter.
In an official statement, ARTUZ highlighted grave apprehensions about the integrity of operations within the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, as well as the Zimbabwean government itself.
“The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), is alarmed by the recent announcement by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, of yet another mutation of the local currency and mysterious promises of monetary stability. “Whilst we acknowledge the need for a strong local currency for macroeconomic development, we express serious concern over the lack of integrity in the operations of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion and the government of Zimbabwe. “As a Teacher Trade Union, we represent a sector that relies solely on monetary transactions and any hiccups in the administration of money is a direct attack on the livelihoods of teachers and other workers in general. “Our worries over the announced changes in the monetary regimes used in the country are not without cause or justification. Workers, like other users of monetary transactions in the country, have the most horrific historical experiences of livelihoods, savings, and investments, lost in a flash when such monetary changes were made and dubious value accredited to a worthless currency. “So, it is a very worrying moment for our sector as we risk having our meagre earnings further eroded. Most government workers including teachers are putting their money in social investments such as purchasing and developing residential stands, poultry and goat farming, as a survival tactic in the harsh economic conditions, and all these have monetary value pegged in US dollars, as a store of value. The recent announcement of a Structured currency conjures memories of eroded monetary value and shattered investments in the past. As ARTUZ we make the following observations and demand urgent clarity on the matter, exchange. “The Ambush manner of the Introduction of the Structured Currency “It is our considered view that legal tender denotes that a legal process must accompany the promulgation of a currency that comes into effect. Our research on the matter has revealed that neither the parliament of Zimbabwe nor the Senate had an opportunity of being informed, to contribute, or discuss the introduction of the new currency and its socioeconomic impact, and the law accompanying. The citizens of Zimbabwe woke up to the announcement in the press of a development which significantly affects their lives, without the benefit of sufficient notice and consultation. “As a Union we maintain that citizens remain the repository of solutions to the challenges affecting their lives, in their diversity. We demand that sufficient consultations be done and room be given for submissions on the matter. Confidence plays a key role in the acceptance of any currency and consultations will result in ownership of the currency by the people of Zimbabwe. NOTHING FOR US WITHOUT US! Multi-currency regime The government’s position on the usage of different currencies, primarily the US dollar, will be prolonged up to 2030. “We demand that there be clarity on the matter assuring the citizens of Zimbabwe that the introduction of the structured currency will not interfere with the transactions in US dollars. “It is a public secret that the economy of Zimbabwe has dollarized and, in some localities, the Zimbabwean dollars are not accepted either as change or for purchases. “In business as well, government-linked establishments like Innscor refuse to mix local currency with US dollar transactions. “All these erode the confidence in the usage of a local currency that is not accompanied by solid assurances of value. “We demand that there be safeguards to protect users from unscrupulous money dealers and businesses that have been bred by economic crises and monetary instability
“The Economy has dollarized. Dollarise Civil service salaries We demand that all salaries of government workers be pegged to the US dollar to the last cent. All facets of the economy have dollarized and keeping a façade of local currency whose value is not certain, as a component of remuneration for civil servants is hypocritical. The introduction of a new currency should be done where value of earnings is not in dispute and the exchange into another currency fluid.
“Restore the Integrity of the banking sector.
“It is not a secret that a lot of money in Zimbabwe exists outside the banking sector and acts as fuel for monetary speculation in the case of a local currency whose value is not certain.
“Revelations of cash payments of sums like 1 million US dollars in donation as was recently done by Wicknell Chivayo when he donated to ZCC church, the gold mafia revelations of individuals with large stashes of money, amongst other examples point to a contributory factor to the monetary crisis.
“We demand that there be due diligence to force monetary transactions to be done in the banking system and eliminate room for black-market speculation. We posit that this will pave the ground for the effectiveness of a new currency and maintenance of value.
“To this end, ARTUZ calls upon the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion to suspend the promulgation of the new Currency and give notice, unpack the Structured currency, invite input, and give the necessary assurance to the citizens. As workers tatambura kwenguva refu (we have suffered for too long” and we cannot bear another casino experiment with our livelihoods.
“The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe will continue discharging its mandate of representing teachers, and being part of the citizens collective in fighting for an inclusive education service, economy, social and political environment that allows teachers, workers, and all citizens to live dignified lives. Marconati, the owner of several companies including Eagle Italian Shoes and Leather and Strengthened Investments Private Limited, alleges that his life has been in danger since he blew the whistle on the criminal activities.
Marconati’s troubles began after he lodged complaints against one of the directors at his companies for alleged foreign currency externalization.
According to court documents, Marconati has been arrested more than five times since then, prompting him to seek legal recourse for protection.
In his application to the High Court, Marconati is seeking declaratory relief, asserting that his rights have been violated due to his exposé on the criminal syndicate.
He specifically references Article 33 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which addresses the protection of whistleblowers.
The businessman claims that the alleged syndicate, led by one of his former business partners, Li Song, has been involved in illicit transactions using his companies as a front.
Marconati alleges that Li Song, along with other individuals, manipulated foreign currency auctions for personal gain, resulting in significant financial losses for his companies.
Despite Marconati’s efforts to seek justice, he claims that the legal process has been marred by delays and frustrations.
He recounts instances where cases he reported against Li Song were either not tried or transferred to different police stations. By A Correspondent| In a startling revelation, Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank Governor, John Mushayavanhu, has announced that despite the nation boasting 2.5 tonnes of gold reserves, the central bank holds a mere 1.5 tonnes in its vaults.
The whereabouts of the remaining gold remain shrouded in mystery, raising concerns about the fate of the precious resource in a country grappling with economic instability.
Speaking at a press conference, Mushayavanhu disclosed that of the total gold reserves, 1.5 tonnes are stored domestically, with the remaining one tonne purportedly held offshore. However, questions linger over the transparency and accountability surrounding the handling of the nation’s prized mineral wealth.
Economic commentator Professor Gift Mugano cast doubt on the adequacy of Zimbabwe’s gold reserves to support the introduction of a structured currency.
Mugano highlighted that the combined gold reserves and cash holdings, estimated at US$291.8 million, fall significantly short of the necessary reserves to ensure currency stability.
“2.6 tons of gold & US$100m (i.e., US$291.8m equivalent) are a drop in the ocean. Here is the simple mathematics: If we combined 1.1 tons of gold (local) and 1.5 tons of gold (offshore), we have 2.6 tons of gold. If we use the price of gold per ounce of US$2294 as of yesterday, our 2.6 tonnes of gold gives us an estimated value of US$191.8m. Our total reserves are estimated at US$ 291.8 million if we factor in the additional US$100 which has been announced by the RBZ. This year, we are anticipating to import goods worth US$9 billion, that is, US$750m per month. Our reserves (2.6 tons + US$100m) = US$291.8m can only cover 11.7 days of the month if we are not exporting anything. In short, our reserves are not enough to give us at least one month of import cover. Basic economic theory tells us that we must have at least six (6) months of import cover to guarantee currency stability if all things are equal. This is a priori requirement. In our case, we have approx 1/3 month cover! This is not enough to support the structured currency even if we will still receive forex inflows from exports, diaspora remittances, credit,” said Mugano.
Moreover, concerns escalated as George Guvamatanga, the Permanent Secretary for Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, disclosed that the Treasury holds an additional US$300 million in reserves, separate from the central bank’s holdings.

I was in Hurungwe district and part of Gokwe Gandavaroyi. I engaged and listened to village heads and villagers.
Their situation is grave. The government through the department of social welfare has been registering a few villagers to receive food aid.
I witnessed several such food distribution exercises by the department of social welfare. What I saw is shocking.
In one village, six villagers were sharing three gallons of maize. What is more painful is the widespread corruption in the state that has really become endemic in the administration of ED and Zanu Pf.
At one such food distribution in remote parts of Gokwe Gandavaroyi, few villagers were registered to receive the food, and 192 bags of maize were offloaded.
Nearly one thousand villagers gathered and only less than 100 managed to receive the food aid. Those who got it were getting two gallons per family.
Very few managed to get a bucket full of maize. At the end 45 bags of maize remained. There was commotion as to whose it was. Those distributing could not explain. The argument continued till night fall.
Hungry villagers stumbled for the food and grabbed it and disappeared in the dark! All of it was looted by hungry villagers and the matter was reported to the police the following day.
In another place I witnessed villagers sharing maize using a tea cup. All signs indicate that we will have severe needs of food this year and the government better start allowing international food aid organisations to start coming through to help.

Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs has died after being shot in a hijacking incident in Florida, Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Gauteng police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said Fleurs was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI into the petrol station on 14th Avenue when the incident happened.
“While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 Series,” Masondo said, as cited by IOL website.
“The suspects pointed him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once on the upper body. One suspect drove off with the victim’s car followed by his accomplice.”
Fleurs was taken to the nearest medical care centre where he was declared dead on arrival.

A visibly nervous Emmerson Mnangagwa has hurriedly taken action in the face of the devastating impact of the El Niño-induced drought on the country’s agricultural sector.
With the 2023/24 summer cropping season severely affected, Mnangagwa has officially declared a state of disaster, recognizing the urgent need for mobilization of resources to avert widespread starvation.
Addressing the nation from the State House in a solemn speech on Wednesday morning, Mnangagwa invoked Section 27, Subsection 1 of the Civil Protection Act (Chapter 10:6) to confront the crisis head-on.
In his address, Mnangagwa emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating:
“Dear Zimbabweans, the foregoing situation of the climate change-induced drought requires measures and interventions as provided for in our laws.
To that end, I do hereby declare a nationwide State of Disaster, due to the El Niño-induced drought.”
He further explained the legal basis for his action, citing the relevant legislation:
“Accordingly, I now invoke Section 27, Subsection 1 of the Civil Protection Act (Chapter 10:6), which provides that: ‘If at any time it appears to the President that any disaster of such a nature and extent that extraordinary measures are necessary to assist and protect the persons affected or likely to be affected by the disaster in any area of the country, the Presidency may, in such a manner as he considers fit, declare that, with effect from a date specified by him, a state of disaster exists within an area or areas specified by him in the Declaration.'”

CHIREDZI – Three suspected robbers axed a Chiredzi man after he gave them US$800 and they had ransacked his house of cellphones and laptops at 1am on Monday.
Hillary Bvocho who worked for Chiororo Transport Company as an administrator was axed in front of his wife at his house in Funye Road, Makondo Suburb on Monday.

A serial robber believed to have been released from prison under last year’s Presidential Amnesty is terrorizing women in Chinyika and Chitsa areas under Ward 10 in Gutu.
Over 20 cases have been reported to traditional leaders and Police at Bhasera. He has been stealing electrical gadgets like solar panels, cellphones and invertors when he breaks into homes.
The robber is believed to be living in the mountains and he waylays women along paths and attacks them. Sources said he is a fast runner and he outpaced his pursuers to safety several times.

Rudo Madzivire of Mabwe Village under Chief Chitsa was attacked by the suspected robber and hit in the head with a stone. She got three stitches on the wound and she was robbed of her cellphone.
Various sources who spoke to The Mirror said villagers suspect that the robber is Edmore Musimudzirwa who hails from Musimudzirwa Village.
Masvingo Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said that he is not aware of the matter.

By A Correspondent| 13 Mahachi villagers who were yesterday convicted by Chipinge Magistrate Alfred Chinembiri are set to approach the High Court to appeal against the conviction and sentence.
Court appeal has been set to contest the sentencing of 13 Mahachi villagers by Justice Alfred Chinembiri of Chipinge Magistrates Court, for allegedly contravening section 24(1) as read with section 24 (4) of the Regional, Town and Country Act Chapter 29:12
The numbers of Mahachi villagers who were summoned before Chipinge Magistrates court started as 406 on their first court appearance on 5 February 2024.
The judgement by Justice Alfred Chinembiri ignored a number of yawning gaps, especially presented by Chipinge RDC, who brought contradictory Rhodesian maps that failed to prove that the accused were staying in a gazetted land . Throughout the trial the state witnesses were either unavailable or irrelevant to the matter before the courts.
It is on this basis that we are convinced a higher court will set aside the matter for lack of any merit
Importantly, the judgement by Alfred Chinembiri, has not given Chipinge Magistrates court any right or obligation to evict the villagers.
The court did not decide on the land ownership but only chose to penalise 13 out of 406 villagers to pay USD 50 fine before the 19th of April. 2024.
The judgement in question has no allocational effect on the villagers as they will continue to stay put as the legal counsel pursue justice at the High Court, which is part of the legal remedies available for them.

In terrible news Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life on Wednesday.
Fleurs was yet to make his Chiefs debut, having just signed for the club in October last year.

By James Gwati-President Emmerson Mnangagwa has angered the Ndebele tribe after it emerged that he is secretly locating the grave of the Ndebele monarch King, King Lobengula, without consulting his family.
Mnangagwa has since secretly dispatched a government delegation to Zambia, purportedly in search of the burial site of the enigmatic king.
King Lobengula disappeared in 1893, following the Battle of Pupu near the Shangani River, and his disappearance remains shrouded in mystery.
Despite historical accounts, his fate has eluded certainty, fueling speculation and legend.
The battle, a testament to Ndebele’s resistance against colonial forces, symbolized a pivotal moment in Zimbabwe’s history, yet colonial perspectives have long dominated its narrative.

By Staff Reporter- The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) has released the 2024 Grade 7 examination dates.
The timetable by ZimEye has already been sent to schools throughout the country, and it indicates that the first exam date is 23 September 2024.
Schools have also sent the timetable to parents and guardians to share with the candidates.
The timetable comes after the Ministry of Education recently extended the Ordinary and Advanced Level examination fees deadline by two months.
Initially, the deadline was on March 23, and is now the first week of May, a move that provides adequate time to raise the funds.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo told legislators in Parliament in March that the Government had taken heed of concerns from legislators and parents, who had said they were failing to meet the deadline initially set by the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec).
“The official deadline for November examination is March 25, 2024. However, because of the request from Members of Parliament, I have consulted the board of Zimsec and we have agreed to extend the deadline up to the first week of May. If I am correct, it should be the Friday of that first week,” said Minister Moyo. There has been anxiety and fears that several pupils would not be able to register as candidates due to failure to mobilise resources. Earlier on, legislators heard that Government had adequate social protection measures on students who were unable to pay tuition and examination fees and also for those at universities. At primary and secondary level, Government has introduced the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) for disadvantaged learners. It has unveiled loans for those at State tertiary institutions, administered by financial institutions. Furthermore, “work for tuition fees” programmes have been introduced where those students at universities and colleges unable to pay tuition fees should come forward and work at their institution in lieu of their tuition. This was said by Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, as Leader of the Government Business in the House, and Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, while separately responding to related questions. There had been concerns that many learners at schools and students at tertiary institutions were being barred from writing examinations over non-payment of fees. In response, Prof Murwira said payment of tuition fees was inevitable either by the State or by parents. He said with respect to tertiary education, students should use a loan facility from financial institutions or work for fees at their institutions. Prof Murwira noted that there had been a low uptake of loans. “On access to education, education is not free; we have to pay for it. The public has to pay for it or the State. “However, we recognise that people are differently abled in terms of capacity to pay. We have several programmes for students that include ‘pay for fees’ and about 300 students have benefited. “CBZ is also providing loans and we have put money for that. It seems people do not want to borrow. There is a low uptake in taking this money,” said Prof Murwira. He said the university system was automated and it would bar students who were not paid up, hence the need for students to come forward with their plight to authorities for attention. Minister Ziyambi implored parents to adequately prepare for examination fees on time given that they would have been aware of the pending exams. “The issue of exam fees has not suddenly become urgent because the deadline is tomorrow. “The responsible ministry flighted adverts that people can pay in Zimbabwe dollars. Those with challenges must follow the channels and they will get help,” said Minister Ziyambi. Early this week Zimsec informed parents and guardians that Ordinary and Advanced Level, Grade 6 and Grade 7 examination fees shall be paid in Zimbabwe dollars at the interbank rate. Parents who wish to pay in US dollars and the South African rand, could still do so. “Fees are pegged in USD, however they are accepted in the currency which the parents/guardians are comfortable with,” said Zimsec. -ZimEye

THE Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)has dismissed social media claims that it has increased tariffs.
In an interview with the ZBC News this Tuesday, ZESA’s Stakeholder Relations general manager, Dr George Manyaya said the power utility’s tariffs remain unchanged.
“There has been various articles circulating that electricity tariffs have been increased and it’s now solely in United States dollars. I would want to categorically state that there has not been any tariff increase. The last increase was in December 2023.
However, the tariffs are charged in United States dollars but payable at a prevailing bank rate and our clients can choose what currency they want to use, it is not mandatory to use the United States dollars.”
Dr Manyaya also spoke on the need for the nation to use electricity sparingly.
“I would like to urge our customers to use electricity sparingly so that we conserve our energy. We have several challenges including the depleted water levels at Kariba Dam.”
The government is working flat out to ease electricity shortages with the Hwange Thermal Power Station 7 and 8 expansion project contributing 600 megawatts of power to the national grid.
TWO Harare men have appeared in court facing allegations of aggravated indecent assault and kidnapping a 24-year-old man.
It is alleged that the 40-year-old Lionel Chipunza and Edwin Geni (35), took the complainant to their house in Hopley without his consent before detaining and indecently assaulting him.
It is further alleged that they drugged the 24-year-old and threatened to stab him if he called out for help.
The duo was remanded in custody and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
Meanwhile, in another case, five suspected South African-based hitmen, who were nabbed last week, have been remanded in custody pending bail ruling on Thursday.
Moses Monde from Johannesburg as well as Malvin Manzinde, Malvin Tatenda Nyamuranga, Norbert Muponda, and Joshua Mapuranga, based in Cape Town were allegedly hired by a businessman to assassinate his rival after a misunderstanding over a US$800 000 deal.
The state is opposed to the five being granted bail, arguing that they are likely to abscond.
In another case, a local Pastor is in trouble for allegedly selling a car he had hired from a congregant.
The court heard that Peter Rego aged 53 broke an agreement with the owner of the vehicle and sold it.
In a recent judicial proceeding, Tanaka Ryan Ziso, a 24-year-old student at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust), faced legal scrutiny for allegedly publishing a controversial statement on social media that disparaged the Ndebele ethnic group. Ziso, who is pursuing his final year in civil and water engineering and resides at the Old Mutual students’ accommodation complex in Selbourne Park, was brought before Bulawayo magistrate Mr. Maxwell Ncube this Tuesday. The charges against him are centered around the accusation of making offensive remarks towards individuals of a specific race.

The court set Ziso’s bail at US$50, following which he was released. His legal defense is being managed by Mr. Tinashe Tashaya from Sengweni Legal Service. As the proceedings unfold, Ziso has been remanded out of custody, and his case is set to continue through summons, indicating that he will not be held in jail while awaiting trial but must appear in court as required.

Allegations have surfaced against the Zanu-PF administration for purportedly granting permission to investors to disturb numerous graves for mining purposes, disregarding both social conventions and traditional values.
According to Farai Maguwu, Director of the Centre for Natural Resource Governance, this move showcases a blatant disregard for the sanctity of burial grounds and the cultural heritage of affected communities.
Maguwu voiced concern over the government’s actions, stating that the disruption of burial sites not only reflects a lack of respect for Zimbabwean customs but also carries significant cultural and psychological ramifications for the impacted families.
This pattern reportedly began in Marange around 2009, where over 3,000 graves were reportedly destroyed to facilitate diamond mining operations.
Similar incidents have since been reported in Penhalonga and Buhera, where graves dating back decades have been desecrated without regard for the families of the deceased.
In Penhalonga, for instance, graves believed to be over 80 years old were recently disturbed, leading to renewed mourning among relatives.
Likewise, in Buhera, approximately 30 graves were reportedly exhumed, causing distress in the affected village.
Maguwu highlighted the lack of preparation and support provided to families dealing with the psychological trauma resulting from these actions.
He criticized the violent nature of the disruptions, likening them to the government’s displacement of people from their rightful land.
However, Zanu-PF spokesperson Farai Marapira dismissed these allegations, asserting the government’s respect for cultural norms and denying any wrongdoing.
This isn’t the first time the government has faced accusations of disturbing burial sites for development projects.
The Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Pvt) Ltd, for instance, is reportedly seeking approval to exhume human remains in the Manhize area to make way for a significant project.

The timetable has been released after the Ministry of Education recently extended the Ordinary and Advanced Level examination fees deadline by two months.
Initially, the deadline was this Saturday, March 23, and is now the first week of May, a move that provides adequate time to raise the funds.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo told legislators in Parliament in March that the Government had taken heed of concerns from legislators and parents, who had said they were failing to meet the deadline initially set by the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec).
“The official deadline for November examination is March 25, 2024. However, because of the request from Members of Parliament, I have consulted the board of Zimsec and we have agreed to extend the deadline up to the first week of May. If I am correct, it should be the Friday of that first week,” said Minister Moyo. There has been anxiety and fears that several pupils would not be able to register as candidates due to failure to mobilise resources. Earlier on, legislators heard that Government had adequate social protection measures on students who were unable to pay tuition and examination fees and also for those at universities. At primary and secondary level, Government has introduced the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) for disadvantaged learners. It has unveiled loans for those at State tertiary institutions, administered by financial institutions. Furthermore, “work for tuition fees” programmes have been introduced where those students at universities and colleges unable to pay tuition fees should come forward and work at their institution in lieu of their tuition. This was said by Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, as Leader of the Government Business in the House, and Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, while separately responding to related questions. There had been concerns that many learners at schools and students at tertiary institutions were being barred from writing examinations over non-payment of fees. In response, Prof Murwira said payment of tuition fees was inevitable either by the State or by parents. He said with respect to tertiary education, students should use a loan facility from financial institutions or work for fees at their institutions. Prof Murwira noted that there had been a low uptake of loans. “On access to education, education is not free; we have to pay for it. The public has to pay for it or the State. “However, we recognise that people are differently abled in terms of capacity to pay. We have several programmes for students that include ‘pay for fees’ and about 300 students have benefited. “CBZ is also providing loans and we have put money for that. It seems people do not want to borrow. There is a low uptake in taking this money,” said Prof Murwira. He said the university system was automated and it would bar students who were not paid up, hence the need for students to come forward with their plight to authorities for attention. Minister Ziyambi implored parents to adequately prepare for examination fees on time given that they would have been aware of the pending exams. “The issue of exam fees has not suddenly become urgent because the deadline is tomorrow. “The responsible ministry flighted adverts that people can pay in Zimbabwe dollars. Those with challenges must follow the channels and they will get help,” said Minister Ziyambi. Early this week Zimsec informed parents and guardians that Ordinary and Advanced Level, Grade 6 and Grade 7 examination fees shall be paid in Zimbabwe dollars at the interbank rate. Parents who wish to pay in US dollars and the South African rand, could still do so. “Fees are pegged in USD, however they are accepted in the currency which the parents/guardians are comfortable with,” said Zimsec. -ZimEye

“I call upon President ED Mnangagwa to urgently consider calling back POLAD to share advises in tackling the economic challenges currently facing the country especially the runaway inflation, price instability and exchange rate volatility.
“While we applaud the appointment of the new reserve bank governor in accordance with the RBZ Act, we think the burden should not only be shouldered on him but should be spread to other political and economic players to urgently bring economic stability and help to achieve Vision 2030.
He added that with Polad is ready to put hands on the deck in a bid to help President Mnangagwa.
“POLAD is a tried and tested Institution which has proved itself during it’s engagement with the government between 2019 and 2022 where the economy was fairly stable as compared to the current situation where POLAD is no longer sharing political and economic notes with the government.
“There is danger of having the inflation running out of control if there is no broader engagement with all stakeholders. POLAD has proved itself despite unjustified criticism from the western sponsored political parties and it should be given another chance before the economy run out of control.”
Speaking after announcing his new cabinet last year, Mnangagwa said Polad remains a useful platform.
“The Polad platform was extremely useful, it was a platform where other political parties who participated in the 2018 general elections did not make it and through the Polad platform we were able to interact and exchange views across the board, on the entire framework of Government, and we were able to discuss without limitation.

By A Correspondent| President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a State of National Disaster in response to the devastating El Nino induced drought that has gripped the nation during the 2023-24 agricultural season.
Quoting findings from the Livelihood Assessment Committee Report, President Mnangagwa revealed that an alarming 2.7 million people are projected to face food insecurity from March 2023 to April 2024.
“The Zimbabwe Livelihoods Assessment Committee Report for 2023 revealed that approximately 2.7 million people were expected to be food insecure from April 2023 until the end of March 2024. While we have been able, so far, to fend for this food insecure population, the El Nino drought has now compounded our current situation, with food insecurity levels raised beyond the projected 2.7 million,” expressed Mnangagwa.
The gravity of the situation was further underscored by the President’s disclosure of a staggering cereal deficit of 680,000 metric tonnes, while the current agricultural season is only expected to yield 868,273 metric tonnes.
“We expect 868,273 metric tonnes from this season’s harvest, yet our nation faces a food cereal deficit of nearly 680,000 metric tonnes of grain. This deficit will be bridged by imports,” elaborated President Mnangagwa.

“By this declaration, I also call upon all Zimbabweans of goodwill, including those in the diaspora, the international community, United Nation Agencies, Development and Humanitarian Partners, International Financial Institutions, the private sector, churches and other faith-based organizations, as well as individuals to generously donate towards ameliorating this State Of National Disaster.
“Preliminary assessments show that Zimbabwe requires in excess of US$2 billion towards various interventions we envisage in the spectrum of our national response,” earnestly appealed Mnangagwa.

By Political Reporter- The Zanu PF government has reinstated the notorious youth militia program.
Renamed the National Youth Service program, this initiative, notorious for its role in past atrocities, has been revived to bolster the ruling party’s grip on power ahead of the upcoming elections.
Originally instituted at independence, the program gained infamy for its involvement in the Gukurahundi atrocities, where it was instrumental in terrorizing supporters of opposition figure Joshua Nkomo.
Eanerst Kadungure was the first post-independence minister to oversee this notorious group in 1980, and he led the program under the guise of national service. But, it quickly became synonymous with political violence.
State media reports indicate that the militia training program now rebranded as the Youth Service in Zimbabwe (YSZ), is set to recommence this June.
Initial enrollment stands at 750 youth militia drawn from all corners of the country.
With plans to expand its reach, the six-month training program is poised to indoctrinate thousands more into its ranks.
The program’s revival was announced yesterday during a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare, delivered by Information Minister Jenfan Muswere.
This move marks a disturbing echo of past tactics, as the program was previously relaunched in 2000 amidst the rise of the organized opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Legendary musician Thomas Mapfumo has firmly rejected Chivhayo’s gifts, citing ethical concerns and solidarity with the impoverished populace, while Bishop Nehemia Mutendi of the Zion Christian Church accepted a substantial sum from the same source.

“The house of worship is a place where people don’t come without looking at their state of holiness. If your state of holiness is not important to you, you are not the right person to come to the place of worship. People look at themselves before they take a bath, I am going to the place of worship. You must know what God accepts and what God does not accept.

His family will not be will not find closure and also seeing the body will give us an understanding of what happened, and took his life, so I don’t know when it is going to happen. “The person will be buried on that day, if we discover that we will have a problem with their relative, we will go and put the body in the mortuary and to those who have done this.
“Some of them have come to me and you can testify that ever since you came into the praise and you were singing and you were singing while you were living at filthy life. You can tell that you already had a curse. You can tell that things are not going very well for you.

Chiwenga who has deleted some of his videos now preaches that wives must allow another woman to coexist with them inside the same home.

In his own video, recorded inside hospital less than a day after the accident, the preacher loudly says that he was speeding (in a 60km speed limit zone) at 120 kmeters per hour and he even wanted to accelerate beyond 120km for no other reason other than to rush to Harare and purchase a new fan belt for his car. No one was chasing after him. He then collided with an oncoming haulage truck and three people died as a result of the collision (accident video below).

“I faced death with those 2 people for as long as they were in the ministry. A week before we drove to South Africa I sat down with both of them and I said to them- you are following me everywhere I am going, I am in danger because in those three weeks before the accident we had a lot of incidents where death threats continued to come.
“I am sure you still remember at First Street when there was a message that came: run away they are going to come to kill you. And I said I am not going to run. Because I cannot run away from death death is something that nobody can run away from. So I sat with her husband and Mai Vhurumuku, and Baba Vhurumuku is not here, he works outside the country, and I told them there is death that is imminent; we knew about it it, we wrote a letter to president Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“And I told them that I was going to deliver that letter. The two of them, they volunteered to go with me, and I said if I don’t come back what happens to you?

And they said let the will of the lord prevail.
“Our greatest challenge is when that time comes in our lives are we going to be holding our faith like they did? That is why we cannot count their departure, as a loss, it is not them that lost, it is us who lost. We lost an opportunity to go in good time, murikundinzwa here vadikani? Takashaiwa mukana wekuenda, zvichakanaka. So I just want to remind you that the people that do not believe do not understand their level, their carnal level, their corruptible level, their crooked level, we know what you are aiming for, we know the Lord, we know the Lord is coming. We know we shall be vindicated. We know we shall be justified. We know the gospel is going to go on. We know nobody is going to stop the gospel. We know nothing is going to stop the gospel.
“Not even the murderers, not even the politicians. Not even the CIO, not even the army, they will not stop this gospel. They can kill me today but they can’t kill the gospel.
“Tell your neighbour: they can kill me today but they can’t kill the gospel. The gospel cannot be killed because not even a bullet can reach close to the gospel. It is spiritual it is not physical.

What happened after the mother in law defied the threats and continued boldly speaking? Nothing happened to her, and the legal papers were never actioned.

The organization emphasizes its commitment to maintaining high ethical standards and refutes inaccurate media reports suggesting that a significant number of lawyers have been involved in unprofessional conduct, specifically relating to the mismanagement of trust funds.
The controversy stemmed from the publication of Mr. Lloyd Mativenga Mhishi’s book, *Being the Best Lawyer*, which was launched on 22 March 2024. The book, celebrating the essence of legal professionalism through personal anecdotes and a call for adherence to core values, was mistakenly interpreted by some media outlets as an indictment of the legal profession’s integrity. Contrary to reports, Mr. Mhishi did not cite any statistics regarding unprofessional conduct within the profession.
The LSZ criticized these reports for being based on inaccurate data, purportedly linking them to unrelated stories from 2023. The society highlights its proactive approach in handling complaints against legal practitioners, emphasizing that all grievances are thoroughly investigated in accordance with relevant laws and policies. This announcement comes against the stark backdrop of the ZRP’s ongoing inability to solve the more contemporary and pressing case of Itai Dzamara, the activist who vanished without a trace nearly a decade ago. The apparent breakthrough in historical sleuthing starkly contrasts with the authorities’ longstanding failure to address modern human rights concerns, drawing skepticism and raising eyebrows far and wide.
The revelation that King Lobengula’s final resting place has been “discovered” in a cave in Zambia, under the auspices of a fact-finding mission led by esteemed historian Mr. Pathisa Nyathi and funded by President Mnangagwa, has struck many as a curious prioritization of resources. “The house of worship is a place where people don’t come without looking at their state of holiness. If your state of holiness is not important to you, you are not the right person to come to the place of worship. People look at themselves before they take a bath, I am going to the place of worship. You must know what God accepts and what God does not accept.

“We do not want to see that happening. We know that death will come to all of us and that we are not meant to live in this world forever, but it will be a very painful situation for one of our people to disappear and not be accounted for because the family of this person’s life. His family will not be will not find closure and also seeing the body will give us an understanding of what happened, and took his life, so I don’t know when it is going to happen. “What we can change is his dates. His dates to go are unchangeable. But what we can change what God can give us grace on is to recover his body. The Lord said we must continue to emphasise the need for people who we have in the house to fear God and we haven’t had a very good experience so far with people that are in the praise team.

We are embarrassed by what they have done because we can’t have a situation where a married person who is in the praise team is found to have dated another married person or another woman and abandoned his family.

“The person will be buried on that day, if we discover that we will have a problem with their relative, we will go and put the body in the mortuary and to those who have done this.
“Some of them have come to me and you can testify that ever since you came into the praise and you were singing and you were singing while you were living at filthy life. You can tell that you already had a curse. You can tell that things are not going very well for you.

Chiwenga who has deleted some of his videos now preaches that wives must allow another woman to coexist with them inside the same home.

In his own video, recorded inside hospital less than a day after the accident, the preacher loudly says that he was speeding (in a 60km speed limit zone) at 120 kmeters per hour and he even wanted to accelerate beyond 120km for no other reason other than to rush to Harare and purchase a new fan belt for his car. No one was chasing after him. He then collided with an oncoming haulage truck and three people died as a result of the collision (accident video below).

“I faced death with those 2 people for as long as they were in the ministry. A week before we drove to South Africa I sat down with both of them and I said to them- you are following me everywhere I am going, I am in danger because in those three weeks before the accident we had a lot of incidents where death threats continued to come.
“I am sure you still remember at First Street when there was a message that came: run away they are going to come to kill you. And I said I am not going to run. Because I cannot run away from death death is something that nobody can run away from. So I sat with her husband and Mai Vhurumuku, and Baba Vhurumuku is not here, he works outside the country, and I told them there is death that is imminent; we knew about it it, we wrote a letter to president Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“And I told them that I was going to deliver that letter. The two of them, they volunteered to go with me, and I said if I don’t come back what happens to you?

And they said let the will of the lord prevail.
“Our greatest challenge is when that time comes in our lives are we going to be holding our faith like they did? That is why we cannot count their departure, as a loss, it is not them that lost, it is us who lost. We lost an opportunity to go in good time, murikundinzwa here vadikani? So I just want to remind you that the people that do not believe do not understand their level, their carnal level, their corruptible level, their crooked level, we know what you are aiming for, we know the Lord, we know the Lord is coming. We know we shall be vindicated. We know we shall be justified. We know the gospel is going to go on. We know nobody is going to stop the gospel. We know nothing is going to stop the gospel.
“Not even the murderers, not even the politicians. Not even the CIO, not even the army, they will not stop this gospel. They can kill me today but they can’t kill the gospel.
“Tell your neighbour: they can kill me today but they can’t kill the gospel. The gospel cannot be killed because not even a bullet can reach close to the gospel. It is spiritual it is not physical.

Three Zimbabwean universities have collaborated to create a nutritious porridge fortified with mopane worms to address micro-nutrient deficiencies in communities across the country.
The porridge, made from pearl millet, baobab powder, and ground mopane worms, is rich in protein, healthy fats, iron, and zinc.
The goal is to create a culturally accepted food product that can improve diets and combat iron deficiency, especially in children.
The University of Zimbabwe, Chinhoyi University of Technology, and Marondera University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology partnered with UK universities and various organisations to develop the innovative solution.
The project aligns with the Zimbabwean government’s Education 5.0 model, which emphasises using local resources to solve local problems.
The Head of the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food Sciences at UZ, Dr Tonde Matsungo said, “Working with locally available resources is in line with the university’s and the national mantra of the heritage-based education 5.0 where we solve our problems. We are trying to use what we have locally.
Instead of waiting for donors to bring porridge, we want to make sure that we can make our own using our natural resources which tend to be neglected by communities. We are trying to go back to our roots to make sure that people go back to consuming our traditional delicacies.”
“We monitor and compare baseline and end point to see if indeed food had an impact on their physiology.
This is a two-armed trial meaning that half of these are receiving the product with mopane worms and the other half is receiving a product without mopani worms but with all other ingredients. So far we are monitoring them daily, their intake, compliance, adherence and it seems the porridge is being received well in both arms,” said Insects for Nutrition Study’s co-principal investigator, Dr Prosper Chopera.
The chairperson of the Department of Food Science and Technology at CUT, Dr Faith Manditsera said, “The in-vitro bioavailability has already shown that this product has the potential to improve the nutritional status of people. So with the scientific evidence that is also going to come from the feeding trial, we would want to upscale and commercialise the product, we intend to train them so that they can come up with the same product at household level. The production of the porridge might be costly for rural communities so we need to also make sure they can make their own.”
Researchers working with the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Forestry Commission and the Food and Nutrition Council are conducting feeding trials in Gwanda district, where researchers are assessing the porridge’s effectiveness in addressing micronutrient deficiencies in 220 children aged seven to 13.
Food and Nutrition Council’s multi-sectorial coordination unit manager, Mr Alpha Ndlovu said, “One of the key challenges that we have observed in Mat South is the issue of diet quality, we have a challenge of poor diets for children, women of childbearing age and also households.
So this project comes in to breach the gaps in diet quality in terms of promoting the consumption of locally available foods to enhance the quality of diets. This project we are working on is bringing different stakeholders from FNC, academia, to try and come up with a locally grown solution to address the micro-nutrient gaps that are observed in the province as well as in this district.”
To ensure the sustainability of the project, the Forestry Commission is working with communities to develop mopane worm-rearing sites, ensuring a consistent supply of this vital ingredient.
Additionally, communities are being trained to produce the porridge themselves at a household level.

The soldier, a retired Zimbabwe National Army Retired Erasmus Rugeje hads died in a fatal head on collision and died on the spot.
His relative a respected junta, Rtd General Engelbert Rugeje confirmed the sad news to a local Masvingo publication.
He said Erasmus Rugeje, who is his uncle was hit by an oncoming Stallion Bus at Maregere Business Centre in Bikita at around 7am today when his Toyota Dyna encroached in the lane of the oncoming bus.
“He was accompanying his daughter to board a bus and after she boarded the bus, he decided to drive back, that is when he encroached on the lane of an oncoming bus near Zvinoita Vamwe Store and was crashed and died on the spot.
“His body was taken to Silveira Hospital mortuary,” said Gen Rugeje.The late Rugeje is from Headman Charamba under Chief Mazungunye in Bikita.

In a statement, ZPR said On Monday, April 1, a Passion Link Coaches bus carrying 72 passengers veered off the Mutare–Masvingo Road, resulting in injuries to sixty-two individuals.
ZRP said the injured victims received medical attention at Birchenough Bridge Hospital and were subsequently discharged. The ZRP posted on X:
The ZRP confirms a road traffic accident in which 62 people were injured when a Passion Link Coaches bus with 72 passengers veered off the road to the left before overturning and landing on its roof at the 119-kilometre peg along Mutare –Masvingo Road on 01/04/24 early in the morning. The injured victims were referred to Birchenough Bridge Hospital where they were treated and discharged.
In a separate incident, 14 individuals sustained injuries when an Andile Coaches bus, with 19 passengers on board, veered off the road, flipped over once, and came to rest in a roadside ditch.
The accident took place at the 302 km mark along the Harare-Chirundu Road on March 29, 2024, around 12:38 PM. The bus was en route to Zambia.
Authorities directed three injured passengers to Karoi District Hospital, while the remaining 12 sought medical assistance at Mutendere Hospital in Zambia.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the ZRP spokesperson, emphasized that drivers should refrain from speeding in hazardous conditions.

Recent legal documents reviewed by this publication reveal a dispute arising from a series of correspondences exchanged between the involved parties, notably a letter dated March 26, 2024, from the Applicant. This letter has drawn criticism for allegedly pressuring the Sheriff to expedite Mashamhanda’s eviction.
Barriade Investments, through its legal representatives, expressed dissatisfaction with the Sheriff’s actions, citing previous notices issued on December 8, 2023, and February 26, 2024. The Applicant contends that no further notice is required and instructs the Sheriff to proceed urgently with executing the writ of eviction. Failure to comply may lead to legal action against the Sheriff and formal complaints to judicial authorities, the letter warns.
In response, Mashamhanda’s legal team raised concerns over what they perceive as an attempt to manipulate the legal system for premature eviction. They argue that the Applicant misinterpreted a High Court order issued on March 21, 2024, in case HCH1189/24.
Mashamhanda’s representatives point out the Applicant’s apparent unawareness of Rule 60(19) of the High Court Rules 2021, which dictates the handling of non-urgent applications. They emphasize that such cases are transferred to the ordinary court roll without the need for fresh applications.
“This means that case HCH1189/24 has simply been transferred to the ordinary court roll and is still pending,” states Mashamhanda’s legal team. “In light of the clear and unambiguous meaning of the said Rule, the Sheriff cannot and should not carry out the eviction until the matter HCH1189/24, which is before the Courts, has been determined.”
Furthermore, Mashamhanda’s legal team asserts that the initial failure to execute the eviction was not due to an interdict or stay of execution but because of the pending court application. They argue that the Sheriff should stay execution until the matter is resolved, as per established legal practice.
Tragedy struck at a sports bar in Pumula South, Bulawayo on the evening of March 30, 2024, as Notho Sibanda, aged 38, lost his life in a senseless act of violence.

ZANU PF Mazowe North Member of Parliament, Tsungai Makumbe, recently dragged his estranged lover Ludia Makuvure to court accusing her of tarnishing his image and threatening him with unspecified action.
The two appeared before magistrate Johanna Mukwesha, who heard that the relationship between the two went sour after Makumbe demanded a paternity test for his minor child with the respondent.
Makumbe pleaded with the court to be granted a protection order against his ex-lover, accusing her of coming to his workplace at Zanu PF headquarters to harass him.
He said the respondent was also visiting Parliament, badmouthing him to anyone who cared to listen.
The legislator asked the court to bar the respondent from contacting his church members from Johane Masowe Chishanu in Marimba where she is allegedly spreading lies about him being involved in non-existent love affair at the church.
“She calls almost every male member of my church and lies to them that I am bedding their wives and threatens my female church mates, dragging my name into the mud since I am a leader at the church,” Makumbe said.
Makumbe also told the court that the respondent had no business visiting the Zanu PF headquarters because she does not work there, nor was she involved in any business at the party’s premises, except just being a member of the party.
Makuvure opposed Makumbe’s application and accused him of lying to the court.
She accused Makumbe of allegedly infecting her with HIV and later demanding paternity tests for the minor child.
She also told the court that she was a member of Forever Associate Zimbabwe, a shadowy Zanu PF affiliate organisation, and that her presence at the national party headquarters is unquestionable as she will be attending meetings.
Makuvure also told the court that she does not oppose Makumbe’s request for a paternity test, but asked the court to order him to maintain the minor child.
Magistrate Mukwesha granted Makumbe his application for a protection order against the respondent.

Early Tuesday morning, the ZimEye news network received a voice note from the Qoki victim (name withheld) as she announced-
“I feel relieved, this thing has been stressing me day in day out,” she said while screaming that she has received GBP3.000, from her first bank claim for refund.
She becomes victim number 25 to be refunded since the day ZimEye published the first investigative articles in 2023.
Over 550 female investors from Matebeleland were duped to pay in an average of USD45,000 per person into Professor Ncube’s faction’s claim that the women are buying predominantly title deeds. The investigation reveals the title deeds are either none resistant, or totally invalid for land rights transfer.
Prof Ncube is entangled in the scam three times, as both the lawyer of the Qoki founder, Sithule Tshuma, and the lawyer for the victims. In a way that further makes money disappear, Prof Ncube is boss to the chief founder, Jimmy Chasafara who runs by the alias, Ndaba Nhuku.
Several court cases are currently underway.

“He was accompanying his daughter to board a bus and after she boarded the bus, he decided to drive back, that is when he encroached on the lane of an oncoming bus near Zvinoita Vamwe Store and was crashed and died on the spot.

By A Correspondent| A Passion Link Coaches bus carrying 72 passengers veered off the road along the Mutare-Masvingo Road, resulting in injuries to 62 individuals.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident, which occurred at the 119 kilometre peg, causing the bus to overturn and land on its roof.
The bus, which was reportedly packed with passengers, experienced a sudden deviation from its course, swerving to the left before ultimately overturning.
According to the ZRP report, emergency responders promptly attended to the scene, transporting the injured victims to Birchenough Bridge Hospital for urgent medical attention. Thankfully, medical personnel were able to provide necessary treatment, leading to the subsequent discharge of the injured individuals.
“The ZRP confirms a road traffic accident in which 62 people were injured when a Passion Link Coaches bus with 72 passengers veered off the road to the left before overturning and landing on its roof at the 119 kilometre peg along Mutare –Masvingo Road on 01/04/24 early in the morning. The injured victims were referred to Birchenough Bridge Hospital where they were treated and discharged,” police said.

By A Correspondent| The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe has issued a stern warning against the introduction of a new structured currency, asserting that such a move will be met with staunch resistance from the working people.
In a tweet, the union emphasized that currency reform has historically been utilized to deprive workers of their incomes, savings, and pensions.
“Introduction of structured currency will attract structured resistance from the Working people.Currency reform has been consistently deployed to rob workers of incomes,savings & pensions.Zimbabweans let’s join hands & #StopTheFraud Economy is dollarised,we demand 100%USD salaries,” ARTUZ said.
Moreover, they called for solidarity among Zimbabweans to put an end to economic fraud.
