An investigation by the Public Accounts Committee (Pac) into the controversial awarding of a laptops and desktop computers tender to companies that overcharged Parliament was yesterday postponed due to lack of quorum by Members of Parliament.

Yesterday’s meeting was supposed to grill members of the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe for alleged breach of procurement processes by the committee.

“We were supposed to hear from the Ministry of Finance as well as suppliers of those tenders, unfortunately due to some unforeseen circumstances we were hoping that members of the committee would be around, but we have decided that we may have to postpone this hearing to next Monday so that the members will all be here,” Pac acting chairperson Edwin Mushoriwa said.

Pac is investigating a case where Parliament authorised a tender for the supply of 173 laptops valued at US$9 200 each, but were deemed over-priced by the Finance ministry.

Leaked official documents show that Blinart Investments P/L won the tender to supply Parliament with 173 laptops for US$1 602 755, 77, translating to US$9 200 per gadget. Another company, Mid-End Computers and Hardware, won a tender to supply 79 desktop computers to Parliament, pricing its gadgets at above US$3 000 for a single machine.

The controversial tender was cancelled by Parliament after a public outcry over the flawed tender process. -Newsday

A Harare man appeared in court on fresh charges of allegedly trespassing at the State House and impersonating a peace officer.

Nigel Ngoni Rubatsito appeared before Magistrate Dennis Mangosi and he was remanded to October 24.

Rubatsiro was not asked to plead. The court heard that, on July 17 last year at the wee hours of the morning Rubatsiro went to State House at corner Josiah Tongogara and Seventh Street and upon arrival he approached the security personnel and misrepresented to him that he was a member of Central Intelligence who had come for duty.

Rubatsiro demanded entrance into the premises and he failed to produce any identification and the security details identified him as the one who had previously tried to gain entrance into the State house on July 16.

The court said that the accused had no lawful right to commit this offense. -Herald

State Media – High Court Judge Erica Ndewere last week had her appeal against the High Court decision ordering her to surrender her operational vehicle flopped after the matter was struck off the roll.
The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) wanted to seize Ndewere’s service vehicle after she was fired from the bench for gross incompetence.

High Court judge Justice Samuel Deme had ordered Ndewere to surrender the vehicle to the Sheriff for safety until her application contesting her dismissal from the bench was concluded.

Deme also directed the Sheriff to seize the Mercedes Benz vehicle if Ndewere refuses to voluntarily surrender it.

The JSC had sought a High Court authority to repossess the vehicle following her dismissal.

But Ndewere appealed against Deme’s ruling at the Supreme Court, but a three judge-panel of Justices Antonio Guvava, Nicholas Mathonsi and Felistus Chatukuta unanimously agreed to have the appeal struck off the roll.

In her court papers, Ndewere argued that she was entitled to purchase the vehicle in terms of her employment contract.

Ndewere argued that her colleagues who were allocated vehicles on the same day with her have been allowed to purchase their cars.

Ndewere was removed from the bench by President Mnangagwa on June 17 2021 over misconduct allegations.

She, however, had retained possession of the Mercedes Benz E300 registration number ADY 474, which is registered in the name of the Master of the High Court, a former department of the JSC.

Her request to purchase the Land Rover was granted on April 9, 2021. But the JSC demanded the return of the Mercedes Benz on April 19 2022, and Ndewere allegedly refused to do so.

Ndewere insisted that she was entitled to purchase the vehicle, arguing that the JSC was not the owner of the vehicle, but the office of the President.

She also argued that the request by the JSC was done unlawfully. Herald

DISCORD has rocked the Zanu PF party in Mashonaland East province, with reports of divisions in the provincial executive.

This paper is reliably informed that some top party officials have accused the provincial leadership of heavy-handedness and making wrong decisions on crucial matters.

Provincial chairperson Daniel Garwe, on Thursday, told a provincial co-ordinating committee in Marondera that he is aware of a plot to oust him.

“Let me take this opportunity to tell you that I am aware of the plots against me. I hear that some are mulling to sign a petition against me, but that will not work. I will not stop executing my duties and campaigning for President Emmerson Mnangagwa,” Garwe said.

At the same meeting, party official Jerry Gotora told the gathering that Garwe was voted into power and could only be removed by the same process.

“Chairman (Garwe), you should not be worried about that (petition). You were voted into power by us, and you can leave that position through the same process. You are the chairman continue with your work,” Gotora said.

In the past few months, Garwe announced the suspension of two district co-ordinating committee DCC chairpersons, Alfred Pedzisa (Chikomba) and Israel Maliki (Murewa), accusing them of incompetence and insubordination.

Maliki, who has since been replaced by Murewa DCC secretary for education Wellington Kademeteme is yet to appear before a disciplinary hearing.

Provincial disciplinary committee chairperson Kudzai Majuru yesterday confirmed the suspension of Maliki but could not divulge more details.

“I confirm that he was suspended and is set to appear before a disciplinary hearing,” Majuru said.

Pedzisa was suspended at an inter-district meeting held at Sadza Growth Point before being replaced by Transport minister and Chikomba Central legislator Felix Mhona.

Mhona is also the provincial secretary for administration.

Pedzisa has since appeared before a disciplinary hearing and is waiting for the verdict.

The sacking of Maliki and Pedzisa has brought discomfort within party members with reports that more DCC chairpersons are set to be suspended.

By A Correspondent| National Constitutional Assembly leader party Lovemore Madhuku said his party was working to ensure that Zanu-PF did not win in the upcoming election.

In an interview with a local daily, Madhuku said his party had put in place strategies to ensure Zanu PF does not win next year’s elections.

“We have put in place so many strategies to ensure that we achieve that. But obviously, we will not disclose our strategies,” Madhuku said.

This followed claims by the ruling party that it was being infiltrated by opposition members.

“You also have those who have been disqualified because there (was) additional information to the point that  probably they are not in good standing in terms of their activities and some who might not really (be) moving with us, who might probably be Zanu-PF during day and opposition during the night. So, there are cases like that where you need experts to assist us to make a better assessment,” Bimha said at a Press conference on Friday ahead of the party’s central committee elections that were held on Saturday.

A fourth-year student at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) was killed by a haulage truck on Friday while walking near the campus’s main entrance.

Talent Chari and her friend from the same institution were walking from the university along Harare-Chirundu Highway when a haulage truck veered off the road and hit her.

Neither the Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Margaret Chitove nor CUT’s acting director of communications and public relations Gifford Chikuya could immediately confirm the incident.

However, some witnesses claimed that the now-deceased student was smashed by the truck’s trailer and died instantly after she had saved her friend from being killed by the same truck.

Student Representative Council (SRC) secretary of external affairs, information and publicity Regis Muzambi confirmed the accident.

She was hit by a haulage truck en route to Zambia near New Greens Building along the Harare-Chirundu highway.

Her body was taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

Muzambi said the other student was rushed to Chinhoyi hospital in critical condition.- NewsDay

Zimbabwean journalist Godwin Mangudya was yesterday allegedly assaulted by members of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and ruling Zanu PF activists in the Harare’s Kuwadzana suburb, while covering the party’s Central Committee elections.

Mangudya alerted MISA Zimbabwe that he was assaulted by members of the ruling party and CIO despite formally identifying himself and producing his duly constitutionally-accredited Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) press card.

In a statement, The Zimbabwe chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa said he was detained for more than an hour, while the Zanu PF activists continuously agitated to further assault him.

MISA Zimbabwe said CIO agents and Zanu PF security personnel confiscated his mobile phones and reset the gadgets leading to the journalist losing both his personal and work-related information.

The previous day, Mangudya, was among the journalists who attended a press briefing at the Zanu PF headquarters in Harare, addressed by both the party’s spokesperson, Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, and political commissar, Mike Bimha.

ZANU PF invited members of the media to cover its activities country-wide.

Meanwhile, during the entire ordeal, Mangudya requested the CIO and party activists to reach out to the party’s spokesperson and commissar for them to confirm that journalists had indeed been invited to cover the activities of the party, but that was all in vain.

“MISA Zimbabwe notes with very great concern the continued perpetration of violence against journalists by political party activists, security personnel, and members of the national security. This violence against journalists undertaking their constitutional mandate is an assault on the supreme law of the land as provided for under Section 61 of the Constitution which protects media freedom. Sadly, these unpunished crimes against journalists, come at a time when the entire world is commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists.

“We, therefore, call the on the police to conduct thorough investigations and hold the perpetrators accountable. As MISA Zimbabwe, we are now very worried by this upsurge in the number of criminal attacks against journalists as Zimbabwe moves towards its elections next year. The role of journalists in covering political parties’ activities is to allow the public to access reliable information and make informed decisions and choices.”

CCC change champion Richard Pamire has embarked on a massive voter registration campaign in Kuwadzana East, Harare.

Speaking to ZimEye.com on Sunday, Pamire said he was determined to contribute to the citizens victory in a massive way.

Pamire takes young people to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission ( ZEC) for voter registration every Tuesday.

“We take young people to ZEC for voter registration every Tuesday. We are following President Nelson Chamisa’s six million votes initiative.

We want to make sure that all young people in Kuwadzana East Constituency are involved in electoral processes,” said Pamire.

“On Thursdays and Thursdays there are teams that move around the constituency encouraging people to register to vote.These teams also identify challenges faced by residents – for example transport problems.

Big numbers cannot be rigged, victory is certain.

We are determined to fight for freedom from Zanu PF bondage,” added Pamire.

The day was established to highlight injustices and challenges that girls continue to face throughout the world. The vulnerability of girls continues to increase as their safe space is shrinking with a rise in sexual abuse, in schools, homes, churches and anywhere in the communities.

In Zimbabwe, the vulnerability of girls has been increasing ever since the Covid-19 lockdown. Many parts of Zimbabwe especially in the rural communities have experienced increasing cases of Child Marriages, Teenage Pregnancies and girls dropping out of school. Those who continue going to school experience “Period Poverty”. Some of the factors that promote such is the increasing poverty at household level due to continued economic problems in the country. Informal mining activities in the rural communities have contributed immensely to teenage pregnancies and some religious sectors promote child marriages. Household poverty reduces access to clean sanitary pads and as a survival strategy they either use unhygienic methods to control the flow (which might have long terms effects on their health) or they stay at home during menstruation days (which negatively affects their academic attainment). allow members to seek for medical attention, reports of girls dying at childbirth have been increasing which is worrisome as very little response is coming from the government.

As our theme this year says “Our time is now-our rights, our future” it is clear the future of girls lies in the completion of their education. Therefore, they should receive enough support for them to complete their education. Which means Girls Rights have to be respected through Ending Child Marriages, implementing The New Education Act which allows pregnant girls to continue attending school and girls accessing sanitary pads, Menstrual Health Management (MHM) and Hygiene Education that will help dignify their menstruation.

We would like to appeal to the government to put in place measures that are going to increase the security and protection of girls. Religious Sectors that promote child marriages should be banned and perpetrators brought to book. Communities should proactively create safe environments for girls. The government introduced a policy for Free Sanitary Pads in schools and even budgets for such, but the disbursement policy is not clear. Up to now we do not know which schools qualify for such help, when and how it’s done. But what we know is that girls remain faced with “Period Poverty” and in dire need of assistance.

It is only through promoting the education for girls that we can end Child Marriages and promote community development that is likely to reduce generational poverty.

Speaking at the Zion Apostolic Faith Ministries gathering in Lilfordia ,Zvimba East ,CCC founder Bishop Dr Rocky Moyo urged indigenous churches to embrace modernisation and invest in church infrastructure.

“Let’s have our own church buildings, we are in the 21st century and our young folks are deserting us because they can’t stand being exposed to the vagaries of weather because we worship under trees,”Dr Rocky Moyo challenged.

He further said indigenous churches should take a leaf from yester year churches like Roman Catholic and Anglican which built schools and hospitals.

“Look how churches like Roman Catholic and Anglican boasts of schools and hospitals .Nothing can stop us to build our own, we just need to be organised ,”he added.

The CCA leader pledged to support the Zion Apostolic Faith Ministries to honour their late founding leader Tirivangani Mudhimbo Chademana by building a school named after him.

“It will be ideal to have a school named after your late founder Tirivangani Mudhimbo Chademana and as Council for Churches in Africa(CCA) we are willing to render support so that his legacy lives on ,”he pledged.

The late Tirivangani Mudhimbo Chademana died in 2019 and currently his son ,Philemon ,is the interim leader of the church as he awaits bestowment.

The church was delighted that Ernest Ruzayi , councillor for Ward 25 ,Zvimba East constituency where the church is headquartered said he was ready to assist it to acquire a stand for the school.

“This land is under the Ministry of Lands and what I can do is to facilitate for you to get a stand for the school by simply writing a letter to the ministry, “said the councilor who is also a proud owner of Afrobank Group of Schools.

Speaking at the same event ,CCA vice president Bishop Lameck Chitope urged the congregants to register to vote.

“Let us remind each other that we need to register to vote , it’s our democratic right to do so as congregants ,”Chitope urged.

Meanwhile, the Council for Churches in Africa will be conducting a workshop from 11-14 of this month to help out indigenous churches to put in place succession policies that will be backed by church constitutions.

“I am inviting some of your church leaders to a workshop we will be conducting from the 11-14th of October which will be on succession policy .There is the need to make sure your succession is laid out in the constitution so we avoid the feuds that arise when a church leader dies,”announced CCA leader who was flanked by his wife, Prophetess Faith Moyo who heads the Women Fellowship.

The interdenominational organisation is also involved in a number of philanthropic works of assisting vulnerable groups like orphans and widows with food relief and income-generating programmes.

Tinashe Sambiri|A Citizens Coalition for Change ( CCC) councillor died in a road accident at the weekend.

Councillor Kavhuru from Mutasa North, ward 6, died on the way to hospital after being involved in a terrible crash.

This was announced by CCC in a short statement:

“Sad news Manicaland Mutasa North ward 6 CCC Councillor Kavhuru died on his way to hospital after being involved in an accident.”

High Court Judge Justice Evangelista Kabasa has stopped the arbitrary eviction of more than 100 villagers in Hwange, which was meant to pave way for the establishment of a motor-racing course and which could have displaced them from their ancestral land and ruin their livelihoods.

Stelix Civils had been granted a lease agreement by Hwange Rural District Council and was allocated land for the purposes of developing a Formula One grade motor racing course and proceeded to fence off 500 hectares of land in an area which villagers of villagers of Chibode, Kachecheti and Nemananga wards use as grazing area for their livestock.

The motor racing course was to be constructed on land that the villagers use as grazing land and also use to sustain their livelihoods.

In the application, the villagers argued that their livelihoods would be affected as a result of the development of the racing course and they would not be able to survive in their villages.

The villagers argued that they were not consulted and were not offered alternative land and hence Stelix Civils’ conduct amounts to arbitrary eviction, which violates provisions of section 74 of the Constitution.

After being aggrieved by the decision of Hwange Rural District Council, the more than 100 villagers in three villages of Chibobe, Kachechete and Nemangwe engaged Josephat Tshuma of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, who on 16 November 2021 filed an application at Bulawayo High Court to review the decision by Hwange Rural District Council to allocate 500 hectares of land to Stelix Civils as the proposed project was taking away a large chunk of their communal land and effectively taking over their grazing area.

On 15 September 2022, Justice Kabasa ruled that the decision made by the local authority to allocate 500 hectares of land to Stelix Civils was unlawful.

The High Court Judge stated that Hwange Rural District Council had no authority to allocate land to Stelix Civils to establish a racing course.

Accordingly, Justice Kabasa set aside Hwange Rural District Council’s decision to grant a lease agreement to Stelix Civils for the construction of a racing course and declared that any actions and conduct that had been taken by the local authority following the granting of a lease agreement to Stelix Civils, are invalid.

We are pursuing rural modern development. We were given 800million US Dollars by President Paul Kagame for the provision of electricity in the rural areas. Rwanda President Kagame pursued rural modern Development which we are also pursuing. In Mashonaland East we constructed Muchekeranwa dam.

The people who were displaced to pave way for the construction of the dam have been lifted from poverty to prosperity through irrigation schemes brought by Government. So if you are given programs here they benefit you. Agriculture lift people from poverty to prosperity. Here you have lithium in Bikita minerals which is going to bring a lot of revenue for the country.

You have gold in Renco mine, Chrome, asbestos all these despite that we have sanctions imposed on us. We are building a cyber city in Harare. Two months ago the first phase started and this will add 300 Megawatts to the national grid.

We had issues of fuel but we resolved it now people no longer need to queue for fuel. We introduced issue of devolution funds over and 50 billion is coming to provinces for devolution funds in the next budget. We have 16 languages in this country each and every language is now published and is equally important. We recognise that there is no language which is important than the other.

We used to import fertilizer but the youths managed to manufacture our own fertilizer having realised that we have all the required raw materials here. l was in Manhize on Friday for the launch of Manhize Iron and Steel plant which will employ over 6000 people. It is a billion dollar project. From the first of October vanochera gold ne platinum vakubhadhara ma royalties using their minerals isu toisa ku Reserve Bank.

We are now going to have reserves in minerals for our future generations. Brick upon brick gold upon gold lithium upon lithium silver upon silver tichichengeta.

We will have our general elections next year we want them to be done in peace. We want our young girls and boys to make money not to engage in violence. CCC change champion Richard Pamire has embarked on a massive voter registration campaign in Kuwadzana East, Harare.

Speaking to ZimEye.com on Sunday, Pamire said he was determined to contribute to the citizens victory in a massive way.

Pamire takes young people to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission ( ZEC) for voter registration every Tuesday.

“We take young people to ZEC for voter registration every Tuesday. We are following President Nelson Chamisa’s six million votes initiative.

We want to make sure that all young people in Kuwadzana East Constituency are involved in electoral processes,” said Pamire.

“On Thursdays and Thursdays there are teams that move around the constituency encouraging people to register to vote.These teams also identify challenges faced by residents – for example transport problems.

Big numbers cannot be rigged, victory is certain.

We are determined to fight for freedom from Zanu PF bondage,” added Pamire.

A fourth-year student at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) was killed by a haulage truck on Friday while walking near the campus’s main entrance.

Talent Chari and her friend from the same institution were walking from the university along Harare-Chirundu Highway when a haulage truck veered off the road and hit her.

Neither the Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Margaret Chitove nor CUT’s acting director of communications and public relations Gifford Chikuya could immediately confirm the incident.

However, some witnesses claimed that the now-deceased student was smashed by the truck’s trailer and died instantly after she had saved her friend from being killed by the same truck.

Student Representative Council (SRC) secretary of external affairs, information and publicity Regis Muzambi confirmed the accident.

She was hit by a haulage truck en route to Zambia near New Greens Building along the Harare-Chirundu highway.

Her body was taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

Muzambi said the other student was rushed to Chinhoyi hospital in critical condition.- NewsDay

Jailed former Labour and Social Welfare Minister Petronella Kagonye said she has gained weight in prison and is writing a book on prayer which she plans to release “soon.”

Kagonye, who is incarcerated at the Chikurubi Female Prison, on Thursday told The Herald that she is fulfilling her calling as a pastor during her imprisonment. She said:

I only discovered the other side of me when l got inside here. I am actually a pastor. I went to Bible college but l never thought l would practice what I learnt. The moment l came here, l got that opportunity.

And I am writing a book which l will publish as soon as l am released. It is about prayer. I have made a lot of friends here and I have added some weight.

… l am clocking four months now inside Chikurubi Female Prison and I have learnt quite a lot.

It’s actually a community on its own with new experiences and the good thing is, for everything that happened, God has a reason and purpose.

… When you are inside here, what else can you do other than worship? I have been teaching others how to pray because l realised that there were quite a number of things that were missing.

Others have the desire to worship but the how part remains a challenge. That is why I am mainly focusing on writing a book on prayer.

Kagonye was convicted in June for diverting to her own use, 20 computers which had been donated through her by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) to benefit schools in her Goromonzi South constituency in 2018.

She was sentenced to 36 months with 12 of these set aside for five years on condition of good behaviour.

A further eight months were set aside on condition she restitutes US$10 000, the cost of the stolen laptops.- Pindula News

HARARE – A 15-year-old girl from Norton has died giving birth at a shrine of a white garment church sect in Bikita, her family said.

Nokutenda Hwaramba’s demise has the tragic echoes of the death, in July last year, of 14-year-old Anna Machaya while giving birth in Marange and that of 15-year-old Ferby Munyafi of Chiadzwa Village in Marange who died in January this year from excessive bleeding while delivering under the watch of a faith healer.

Nokutenda’s mother Loice Muparadziwo said she could not be with her daughter in her final moments on October 4 as she herself was hospitalised in Norton where she suffered a miscarriage.

“She got sick and would just fall as if possessed by evil spirits. Her father consulted prophets from his congregation and later took her to Bikita for more prayers. He left Nokutenda in the hands of the intercessors and she died while giving birth at the shrine,” Muparadziwo told H-Metro.

“The church doctrine did not allow us to take Nokutenda to a clinic, or hospital to give birth or for any medical treatment.”

Muparadziwo said Nokutenda was impregnated by a man identified only as Aaron, who was a neighbour in Norton. Aaron reportedly vanished when Nokutenda’s pregnancy came to light.
The latest shrine death of a young girl will shine a new spotlight on the sects’ practices, which have been condemned by the United Nations.

Following Anna’s death in July last year, the United Nations urged Zimbabwe’s government to do more to tackle the scourge of child marriages which are rampant at the shrines of the secretive sects.

By blocking access to professional health care, activists also say the churches’ leaders are denying the teenagers control over their own bodies.

Anna’s parents Edmore Machaya, 45, and Shy Mabika, 36, were jailed for nine months each – wholly suspended – for lying to detectives about her age in a bid to conceal that she was a child when they married her off to Hatirarami Momberume alias Evans Michael Momberume, a 25-year-old devotee of the Johane Marange apostolic sect who has been charged with her murder.

In the January 12, 2022, death of Ferby, police charged her “husband” 29-year-old Arthur Chitombo with having sexual relations with a minor.

Tinashe Sambiri| Suspected Zanu PF hooligans raided CCC Gutu East member Desire Tichazorwa’s house and vandalised a constituency campaign vehicle on Wednesday night.

Tichazorwa is managing projects that have been implemented by businessman and banker Gift Gonese in Gutu East Constituency.

Commenting on the attack, Tichazorwa blamed Zanu PF thugs for attempting to disrupt CCC programmes.

” I heard a loud noise last night and as I tried to collect what was taking place, the intruders smashed windows of our constituency vehicle and deflated its tyres.

Zanu PF is afraid of the impact we are making in Gutu East.

When I shouted at the thugs, they ran away. They had a calculated mission to vandalize the constituency car.

There is no doubt that Zanu PF thugs raided my house. We are proceeding with our projects despite the attack,” said Tichazorwa.

Gonese said the attack would not stop a series of projects he is running in the area.

” While we are not happy with what happened, there is no going back. Our wave of development is unstoppable,” said Gonese.

RESULTS for the Zanu-PF Central Committee elections which were held across the country yesterday had by last night started trickling in with no major surprises recorded in the southern provinces with Professor Mthuli Ncube and Colonel (Rtd) Tshinga Dube getting the nod in Bulawayo.
Each of Zanu-PF Bulawayo Province’s five districts held elections as the party readies itself for its national congress which will be held in Harare later this month. Prof Ncube and Col (Rtd) Dube were joined by Cde Mlungisi Moyo in the District Co-ordinating Committee 1 (DCC-1) who garnered 52 votes to see off the challenges of Cdes Joshua Malinga, Caleb Sengu, Emmanuel Kanjoma, Josephine Danda and Matelia Matunha.

Eulysses Nowedza was elected from the Women’s Quota to represent DCC-1 in the Central Committee.

In DCC-5, Cdes Charles Chiponda, Elifasi Mashaba and Constance Ndlovu were all elected unanimously while in DCC-2 Cdes Godwin Mugumba, Mabutho Moyo and Elphas Tshuma made the cut. With its women’s quota, DCC-2 elected struggle stalwart, Senator Molly Ndlovu.

Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Minister of State, Cde Judith Ncube was elected from DCC-3 along with Cdes Joseph Tshuma and Ebbi Dube who was elected from the women’s quota. DCC-4 delegates elected Cdes Obert Msindo, and David Ndlovu while Esnath Moyo was elected from the women’s quota. Cdes Malinga, Kanjoma and Anna Moyo after losing their bids for the Central Committee seats automatically became members of the National Consultative Assembly (NCA).

In Matabeleland North six districts took to the polls as there were no elections in Umguza District where the party’s Secretary for Administration Dr Obert Mpofu among others sailed through unopposed. In Lupane Cde Leonard Moyo shrugged off challenges from Cdes Collen Ndebele, Girls Ndlovu, Shadreck Mazibisa and Khiwa Ndlovu. In the women’s quota, Cde Marl Nkomo won after a run-off that came after there was a tie between her and Cde Sithembubuhle Moyo when they each got 21 votes. The other candidate, Cde Gladys Ncube had got just a single vote while the other ballot paper was spoilt from the 44 votes that were cast by the women’s league.

In Bubi five candidates jostled for the posts with Cde Nqabayezwe Maphosa winning with 98 votes with Cde Irene Khuphe getting the women’s quota after clinching 20 votes. In Hwange Advocate Jacob Mudenda and Cde Fathi Mpofu retained the Central Committee seats after clinching high votes.

In Midlands’s Gweru District, Cdes Wellington Magura, Bongani Rukanda and Nugget Manyima were declared winners while results from other districts were yet to be confirmed. In Gwanda District the Central Committee elections were held at the Gwanda District Club. Voting started at around 11am and continued well throughout the day. Gunning for the Central Committee seats were Cdes Abedinico Ncube, Madodana Sibanda, Alma Mkhwebu, George Mlilo, Trynos Nkomo, Andrew Ndlovu and Section Ncube.

Harare City Council clinics have a shortfall of at least 300 nurses, crippling health delivery services in the capital as more health workers continue to quit their jobs over poor pay.
Mayor Jacob Mafume exposed the dire crisis facing Harare clinics and revealed that the local authority required a staff complement of around 600 nurses but only had less than half the required figure.

“We are supposed to be operating with over 600 health personnel but we have half of that. This is because there is a brain drain to government. We are losing our workers to government because it is paying its workers better than us,” Mafume told journalists during a press conference on Thursday.

“This is because of the United States dollar component. There is also a brain drain out of the country. Majority of our health personnel have left the country to look for greener pastures.”

There are no exact statistics on the number of health professionals that left the country in 2021, but the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (Zina) put the figure at just over 2000.

A nurse aide recruitment craze has also hit the country, with many nationals scrambling to get the certificate in the hope of making it to the United Kingdom in search of a better life.

Mafume’s media address followed a petition by the Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) after a woman gave birth in a toilet at Glenview polyclinic due to negligence by health personnel.

Mafume said the council was investigating the matter.

CHRA programmes manager Reuben Akili said: “The Glenview issue is a tip of the iceberg. There is gross negligence and abuse of human rights at council clinics. The matter should be dealt with urgency.

“We implore the local authority to honour its pledges to investigate the allegations raised by the residents. Corruption, negligence and criminal abuse of office has resulted in the loss of lives and it should be stopped forthwith.” -Standard

As results started trickling in last night, some Zanu PF bigwigs including former Health minister David Parirenyatwa, politburo member Tendai Chirau and ex-wife of ruling party deputy president Kembo Mohadi, Tambudzani fell by the wayside in chaotic central committee elections held yesterday.
The polls were marred by reports of vote buying with ICT minister Jenfan Muswere arriving at a polling station in Manicaland with a truck full of bicycles in what was seen as an attempt to buy votes.

Parirenyatwa and Lillian Zemura were defeated by David Mugomeza in Murewa district.

In Beitbridge, Mohadi and Ambassador Aaron Maboyi fell by the wayside in the polls.

Although returning officer Zanu PF provincial member Ntombiyakhe Ndlovu did not disclose official results, excited participants said former Beitbridge Mayor Showa Moyo had bagged the women’s quota slot ahead of Mohadi.

Mohadi’s supporters disputed the results.

“Results will be released from the province but all I can tell you is that all went well and it was indeed peaceful,” Ndlovu said.

Zanu PF insiders said war veteran Mazibisa Ngwenya beat three other candidates for the Beitbridge East slot while sitting proportional representative MP for Beitbridge Metrine Mudau brushed aside a challenge by Maboyi.

In Wedza district, former Transport Deputy minister Michael Madanha and his Foreign Affairs ministry counterpart David Musabayana lost.

They protested saying the elections were rigged.

Madanha was defeated by Esther Gwatidzo while Musabayana lost to Bertha Choto.

Madanha is a former Wedza South MP and former Zimbabwe National Road Authority (Zinara) board chairperson while Musabayana is the current Wedza North MP.

Chirau, a politburo member, was outpolled in Harare by Mavis Gumbo.

In Hurungwe North, the elections had to be postponed after former finance deputy minister Terence Mukupe caused a scene at Karoi Country Club where voting was taking place.

There was chaos as two of his bouncers including an election agent were chased away from the venue with one of them forced to delete videos and photos that he had taken.

Mukupe was contesting against former deputy minister and MP Reuben Marumahoko. There were ugly scenes from drunken youths who claimed there was vote buying ahead of the elections.

Some voters were booked at local hotels and guest houses around the farming town of Karoi amid claims that they were given cash and mobile phones among other goodies.

Close allies of the late Robert Mugabe such as Sydney Sekeramayi and Webster Shamu were however celebrating after winning.

Sekeramayi was uncontested in Marondera while Shamu won in Chegutu West.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s close ally and controversial socialite Mike Chimombe won in Chinhoyi after he outpolled Charles Mutisi and Alderman Simbarashe Kanzou.

Chimombe is out of custody on $56 000 bail for fraud charges.

In Makonde, deputy information minister Kindness Paradza won uncontested after Phineas Makumbe withdrew citing “unethical and dirty politics”

“I Phineas Makumbe do hereby withdraw my candidature for the central committee elections for Makonde district owing to the unethical and dirty politics being exhibited by my opponent Kindness Paradza” Makumbe wrote in his withdrawal letter.

Philip Chiyangwa won in Zvimba South while Marian Chombo was elected in Zvimba North.

Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi was uncontested in Zvimba West while former CIO operative Francis Mukwangwariri emerged victorious in Zvimba East.

In Matabeleland, logistical challenges affected the elections as voting in areas such as Hwange and Binga started after 3pm, an hour before the deadline.

Reports said Zanu PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu and his wife Sikhanyisiwe Mpofu won in Umguza. Sikhanyisiwe was unopposed.

In Harare, a tense atmosphere engulfed the polling areas as Zanu PF candidates battled it out for Central Committee positions.

The voting process was delayed in all Harare’s six votes with counting going into the night.

At Stodart Hall in Mbare, visibly drunk youths caused chaos after their preferred candidate one Gijima had been contested. The youths wanted to beat up other contestants for contesting Gijima.

Zanu PF’s Harare team leader Maybe Mbowa said the delay was caused by meticulous verification by the electoral college.

“We are still counting the votes because there was a slight delay. Everything went on well,” Mbowa said.

The Central Committee is Zanu PF’s supreme decision making body in-between congresses. Yesterday’s elections were held weeks away from the party’s elective congress. —Standard

Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa is being forced to “sneak” into some parts of rural areas for safety reasons following previous attempts on his life by suspected Zanu PF activists and state agents.
Hundreds of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters in Bikita were on Wednesday stunned to see Chamisa showing up unexpectedly in Nhodovari village, in Makuvaza ward 5, to attend the burial of staunch party member Langton Musavhaya who had passed away on Monday.

Upon hearing of the presence of Chamisa in the area, scores of party supporters from distant villages descended on the village to join the funeral at the Musavhaya homestead after Chamisa’s arrival.

Local CCC leaders who spoke to The Standard said Chamisa’s visit had not been publicised to avoid possible violent clashes that have accompanied most of his rural visits since last year.

“Chamisa’s visits here have of late been violently disrupted by Zanu PF activists and it has necessitated that ways be found to avoid this and allow him to visit us without fearing for his life and without his followers being attacked,” a local party leader who refused to be named said.

“The visit had to be made secret because of what had been happening in the past. There is no doubt that if the visit had been publicised, Zanu PF would have tried to stop president Chamisa from passing through.

“This is one of our many strategies to make sure that victory is certain come 2023, despite various obstacles.”

The CCC leader had to call off the rally after top Zanu PF officials took over the venue claiming they had booked it for their rally.

CCC spokesperson Gift Siziba said the secrecy in Chamisa’s itinerary was meant to protect him following several assassination attempts on his life.

“Given the surge in the cases of politically motivated violence against the CCC and clear assassination attempts on the president, there is need to put in place plans that ensure the safety of the President,” Siziba said.

“CCC rallies have been marred by Zanu PF violence. We have seen roadblocks being manned by Zanu PF to block our president from passing through. It is against this background that we have seen it prudent that the itinerary of the principal be accessible only to those that are cleared.

“Of course, there are freedoms that everyone should enjoy but those freedoms have been violated on several occasions. We have to have in place measures to ensure that we meet the citizens.”

Countless rallies set to be addressed by Chamisa have been violently disrupted by Zanu PF party activists and suspected state security agents since last year, with his motorcade often attacked.

Last month in Gokwe scores of opposition supporters and journalists from the private media were severely assaulted at illegal roadblocks mounted by Zanu PF supporters.

Chamisa was scheduled to address a campaign rally later on the day to drum up support for the party’s Gokwe-Kabuyuni parliamentary by-election candidate Costin Muguti.

But Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa rubbished CCC claims that the ruling party was sabotaging Chamisa’s campaign rallies.

“These are utter lies. Why is he not attacked here in Harare? What CCC doesn’t know is that nothing succeeds like success itself. President (Emmerson Mnangagwa) vatiza nechimuti (The President is winning the race. That is why there is all this much whining. We are competing and cannot be campaigning for our rivals,” Mutsvangwa said.

Efforts to get a comment from police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi were in vain as his mobile number was not reachable.

Addressing mourners at the Bikita funeral wake last week Chamisa called for peace ahead of the 2023 elections and said the late Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe had endorsed him to take the presidency.

“CCC is the party of choice. Even the late former president realised that Zanu PF had nothing to offer and ordered people to vote for me,” Chamisa said.

After he was deposed in a military coup in 2017, Mugabe said he would vote for Chamisa ahead of the 2018 elections to spite his long-time allies in Zanu PF who ousted him in a de facto coup.

Mugabe told reporters at his mansion in Harare that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government was unconstitutional and that ED ruled by the gun.

“He (Mugabe) said his people turned against him. They removed him against his will …. Nomatter what they do, this time around our victory is certain,” Chamisa said.

“The late Mudhara Bhuradha was an advocate for peace and harmony. People should not hate each other because of their political differences,” Chamisa said.

“People tend to forget about humanity and focus on their political differences. Love one another. Do not hate each other. Unite as one. No one should have violent actions against another person. Young people should contribute to the development of the country and desist from violent insurrections.”

The country’s elections have been marred by political violence.

The run-up to the March by-elections this year were also characterised by political violence that claimed the life of an opposition CCC activist in Kwekwe.

Human rights’ watchdogs in their surveys have listed Zanu PF as the main perpetrators of political violence, a charge the ruling party denies.- Standard

A PRISON officer stationed at Little Kraal Farm in Nyazura pumped three bullets into his head with a service rifle and died instantly following a wrangle with his wife over his alleged affair with a Form Three student.

Kenneth Mawonga (38) was found in a pool of blood by his workmates who had rushed to the scene after hearing gunshots.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services’ public relations officer for Manicaland, Chief Correctional Officer Liberty Mhlanga confirmed the incident.

He, however, could not divulge more details, saying investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the suicide.

“We confirm the regrettable incident, but investigations into the cause of the suicide are in progress,” he said.

However, homicide detectives handling the case revealed that Mawonga had a misunderstanding with his wife over his alleged affair with an under-age school girl.

Following Mawonga’s death, detectives went through his cellphone chats and discovered that he was at loggerheads with his wife over the alleged affair.

Further investigations saw detectives talking to the late Mawonga’s wife, Sharon Paimupindu (31), and she also revealed the couple had spoken about the extra marital affair.

“These are just assumptions of what could have caused the suicide basing on the cellphone conversations. We want to really dig deep into the matter and find out what happened,” said a detective who requested anonymity.

It is alleged that on September 29, Mawonga commenced duty in the morning and was deployed to do perimetre checks around prisoners’ cells.

At around lunch hour, he requested to change guard points with another officer, Tanaka Willard Matsaru, saying he did not want to continue working at the guard point he had been deployed.

Matsaru had been deployed at the Corner Post and was armed with a loaded service pistol.
Matsaru agreed to exchange guard points and handed over his service pistol to Mawonga.

Mawonga took over at the Corner Post until late in the afternoon when gunshots were heard.

An alarm was raised, resulting in all prison officers combing the area to establish what had transpired.

Upon checking the Corner Post guard room, the officers stumbled upon their colleague’s dead body.

A nurse who was summoned to attend the scene confirmed his death.

The matter was reported to the police.

Detectives who attended the scene discovered that Mawonga had wounds on his head, below the chin and on the left nostril.

Spent cartridges were picked from the underside of his chin.

The rifle in question was also recovered.

However, Paimupindu was not readily available for a comment as her mobile phone was not reachable.
