Highlanders Coach Fumes Over Dismissal

Highlanders coach Mandla Mpofu has blamed the media for inciting his sacking.

The gaffer has been under fire from the club’s fans, who have been demanding his dismissal after a poor run in the Castle Lager Premiership.

Bosso have picked just two wins in their last ten games and are on a four-match run of draws.

The performances have left the Bulawayo giants on number 11 and fourteen points behind table-toppers Dynamos, whom they face at Barbourfields Stadium at 3 pm on Sunday.

Speaking to the reporters on Thursday, Mpofu said: “You guys (the media) are experts in your field, and I am an expert in coaching. You have got no chance on that.

“I have no chance in your field, and I can’t do anything. You have got the power of the pen, but I don’t have it.

“It’s unfortunate that is a naked truth.”

Mpofu added that he understands the fans’ frustrations, and they are working on delivering better results.

The supporters taunted the coach after Bosso went two goals down at one point during their 2-2 draw against Bulawayo Chiefs last weekend.

“I know how our fans are feeling. They want the team to win,” the gaffer said.

“What they did on Sunday is very normal…we need to appreciate the feeling of our fans, they want us to win, and I’m the only person responsible for turning around all those things to make sure that the team start to win.”

He added: “For now, let us look at the positive and channel all the energy to win on Sunday so that we bring the cheer and smile to our fans.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Latest On Caps United Crisis

Harare giants CAPS United has been hit by more chaos ahead of this weekend’s league match against Chicken Inn, amid revelations that they might lose two more senior players.

The Green Machine has not been the same since the players’ strike which nearly led to the cancellation of their league match against Cranborne Bullets two weeks ago.

The Farai Jere-executive responded by firing six players – Ronald Chitiyo, Clive Augusto, Dennis Dauda, Roddy Chinyengetere, Simba Chinani and Devon Chafa but later ‘pardoned’ Chitiyo, Chafa and Chinyengetere.

Despite being pardoned, it has emerged that Chitiyo is yet to fully commit to Makepekepe and has not been training with the team.

He was not at yesterday’s training session which was open to the media, fuelling speculation that he is on his way to Northern Region Division One side Simba.

Also absent at the practise session was central defender Jimmy Dzingai.

The former Warriors defender is believed to be on his way out of Makepekepe after a dressing burst-up at Mandava last week, where the Lloyd Chitembwe coached side lost 0-3 to FC Platinum.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Facts About Malaria Vaccine

As World Malaria Day approaches, more than 1 million children in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi have received one or more doses of the world’s first malaria vaccine, thanks to a pilot programme coordinated by WHO. The malaria vaccine pilots, first launched by the Government of Malawi in April 2019, have shown that the RTS,S/AS01 (RTS,S) vaccine is safe and feasible to deliver, and that it substantially reduces deadly severe malaria.

These findings paved the way for the historic October 2021 WHO recommendation for the expanded use of RTS,S among children living in settings with moderate to high malaria transmission. If widely deployed, WHO estimates that the vaccine could save the lives of an additional 40 000 to 80 000 African children each year.

More than US$ 155 million has been secured from Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance to support the introduction, procurement and delivery of the malaria vaccine for Gavi-eligible countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

WHO guidance is available to countries as they consider whether and how to adopt RTS,S as an additional tool to reduce child illness and deaths from malaria.

“As a malaria researcher in my early career, I dreamed of the day we would have an effective vaccine against this devastating disease,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “This vaccine is not just a scientific breakthrough, it’s life-changing for families across Africa. It demonstrates the power of science and innovation for health. Even so, there is an urgent need to develop more and better tools to save lives and drive progress towards a malaria-free world.”

Prospects for new interventions
RTS,S is a first-generation vaccine that could be complemented in the future by other vaccines with similar or higher efficacy. WHO welcomes progress in the development of R21/Matrix-M and other malaria vaccine candidates in early clinical development. The successful completion of clinical trials for these vaccines will be important to assess their safety and efficacy profiles. WHO also welcomes the news from BioNTech, manufacturer of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, that it aims to develop a malaria vaccine using mRNA technology.

In the field of vector control, a number of new tools and technologies have been submitted to WHO for evaluation. Should they demonstrate efficacy in controlling the disease, WHO will formulate new recommendations or amend existing ones to support their deployment. These include, for example, new types of insecticide-treated nets, spatial mosquito repellents, gene-drive approaches and sugar baits designed to attract and kill Anopheles mosquitoes.

There are also new medicines in the pipeline. WHO welcomes the recent approval by the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration of dispersible tablets of single-dose tafenoquine for the prevention of P. vivax malaria among children. Tafenoquine has also been approved for use in adults by the US Federal Drug Administration and by drug regulatory bodies in other countries, including Brazil, Peru and Thailand. As a single dose, tafenoquine is expected to support patient adherence to treatment. The current standard of care requires a 7- or 14-day course of medication.

A number other antimalarial medicines with new modes of action are being developed for the treatment of uncomplicated and severe malaria. Ganaplacide-Lumefantrine, currently in a Phase II clinical trial, is the first non-artemisinin combination therapy and could be an asset in fight against emerging drug-resistant malaria in Africa.

In addition to drug resistance, WHO has reported other pressing threats in the fight against malaria, such as mosquito resistance to insecticides, an invasive malaria vector that thrives in urban and rural areas, and the emergence and spread of mutated P. falciparum parasites that are undermining the effectiveness of rapid diagnostic tests. Innovation in tools and strategies will be critical to contain these threats, together with a more strategic use of the tools that are available today.

More investment needed
According to the 2021 World malaria report, global progress in reducing malaria cases and deaths has slowed or stalled in recent years, particularly in countries hardest hit by the disease. The report notes the need for continued innovation in the research and development of new tools if the world is to achieve the 2030 targets of the WHO malaria strategy.

Funding for malaria-related research and development reached just over US$ 619 million in 2020. An average annual R&D investment of US$ 851 million will be needed in the period 2021–2030.

Making better use of the tools we have now
Reaching global malaria targets will also require innovations in the way that currently available tools are deployed. Through the “ High burden to high impact” approach, launched by WHO and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria in 2018, countries hardest hit by malaria have been collecting and analysing malaria data to better understand the geographical spread of the disease.

Instead of applying the same approach to malaria control everywhere, they are considering the potential impact of tailored packages of interventions informed by local data and the local disease setting.

These analyses will enable countries to use available funds in a more effective, efficient and equitable way.

Stock Market Investors Lose Dividends Following Govt Move to Suspend Borrowing

Companies in Zimbabwe have started to withdraw declared dividend payouts and halting advance payments to suppliers as the fallout from President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s directive that banks stop lending ripples across the economy.

Amid much criticism, the government of Zimbabwe is pressing ahead with its temporary suspension of lending services by banks. The Financial Intelligence Unit further tightened the noose on banks, asking banks to “disclose suspense and other internal accounts” in a directive dated 11 May.

“Some banks may be using suspense and other internal accounts for purposes of purchasing foreign currency on the parallel market. Every bank is required to furnish to the FIU a list of all the suspense and other internal accounts,” Oliver Chiperesa, a director general of the Zimbabwean FIU wrote in the letter.

The effects of the new monetary measures have been rippling beyond the banking sector. Listed companies that had already declared a dividend have started to scrap the payout for the dividends, citing the need to preserve cash in the aftermath of a possible credit crunch arising out of the government’s directives.

“The changes in the financial operating environment and resultant uncertainty have significantly disrupted the credit markets. This caused the company to revise the announced dividend position supported with the need to preserve working capital for the company,” ZSE-listed diversified consumables manufacturer, Dairibord Holdings, said on Thursday.

A unit of Edgars Zimbabwe has also suspended credit advances while Surrey, a big livestock processor has stopped farmers from bringing produce to its abattoirs. Sugar processors, Triangle and Hippo Valley – both controlled by Tongaat Hulett – are also stopping advance payments to cane growers.

“It is with regret that the millers advise of the immediate suspension of advance payments until further notice,” James Bowmaker, chief operating officer for Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe, said in a letter to cane farmers, citing the suspension of lending by banks.

“Following the recent suspension of lending by banks, we find ourselves unable to continue offering advances. We normally fund the advances from loan proceeds that we access from the banks,” explained Bowmaker.

ZRP Bans Spikes

Tinashe Sambiri| The Zimbabwe Republic Police has banned the use of hand held spikes following a public outcry.

Police are accused of throwing spikes at moving vehicles resulting in accidents.

Scores of people have lost their lives due to ZRP ineptitude.

ZBC News reported on Friday morning:

“BREAKING: The Zimbabwe Republic Police has with immediate effect banned the use of hand held spikes by Police officers whilst performing traffic enforcement duties throughout the country.”

Economic Opportunities For All Under President Chamisa Government

FIX THE ECONOMY – HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CCC ALTERNATIVE
The illegal and grossly irrational economic measures announced by Mr Mnangagwa on 7 May 2022 point to an economy that has imploded.

As the alternative and a government-in-waiting, we wish to put forward an alternative CCC economic policy approach which will solve the nation’s economic crisis at its root.

Rethinking the economy
The CCC will offer a break from the present predatory order and a bridge that will accelerate the transformation and make Zimbabwe a stable, democratic and development-focused, modern nation.

We will reshape Zimbabwe through the creation of a shared vision and a sustainable transitional framework that will be the foundation of transforming the structure of our economy, eliminating poverty and enabling the pursuit of sustained, equitable and shared growth.

The new economic framework will be underpinned by a new governance culture and the creation of a consensus state.

Core features of the new governance culture will include respect for the rule of law and constitutionalism, building strong, independent institutions, devolution and equal development, the creation of a rights-based society, eliminating corruption, infrastructure transformation and the development and urbanization of rural areas.

Restoring confidence
The social contract between the state and citizens in Zimbabwe has broken down.

There is a lack of confidence or trust in the State, government and public institutions.

The lack of confidence finds expression in the thriving parallel market, acute hyperinflation which officially stands at 96% year on year, although economic experts have said it is much higher, in the region of 265%.

This is partly because the State and its institutions are corrupt and inefficient.

The lack of confidence and trust in the State and the failure of the State to meet its social obligations to the citizens has resulted in the majority of citizens operating outside the ambit of the State.

Poverty has compounded these problems. The World Bank reports that 49% of the Zimbabwean population lives in extreme poverty.

A CCC government will restore confidence in the government through ethical leadership, the creation of a consensus state where there is wide consultation with key stakeholders before policies are created or changed, the building of a shared and inclusive society and the creation of an economic environment that promotes opportunities for widespread prosperity, especially for the ordinary citizen.

Anchoring the economy on the democratic developmental state model
In addressing the economic challenges faced by Zimbabwe, the CCC accepts that tough decisions will have to be made.

In this regard, the ability of our Government to widely consult and negotiate with local partners will be key.

We will build the capacities of strategic state entities to ensure that they can effectively implement economic policies.

As we have learnt from other successful developmental models e.g. Estonia, we recognize that policy trade-offs will be essential.

Pillars of CCC economic framework
Under a CCC government, the economy will be anchored on macro-economic stability, fiscal discipline, resolution of the debt crisis, financial service sector reform, pension reform and social protection, currency reform, industrialization and alteration of the accumulation model, rationalization of the land reform program including securing land tenure for those who hold agricultural land, agro-industrial transformation, mining sector reform including beneficiation, job creation and formalization of the economy.

Zimbabwe Emergency Economic Rescue Program

Since the end of the GNU in August 2013, Zanu PF has pushed the economy into a state of disequilibrium and dislocation through ballooning debt, fiscal deficits, rampant and uncontrollable expenditure and stagnation.

Correcting the wrongs of Zanu PF’s flawed economic policy is a necessary pre-condition to moving forward.

In this regard, upon assuming office, a CCC government will embark on a short-term stabilization agenda upon which our economic recovery program will be anchored.

This will entail restoring macroeconomic stability and fiscal consolidation. Given the current budget deficit, fiscal adjustments will be necessary.

Fiscal adjustments will be achieved through a number of measures including fiscal consolidation by, inter alia, the pursuit of a primary balance and restoration of balanced budgeting, rationalization of expenditure and improving the expenditure mix, building capacity on revenue management and strengthening public finance management systems, taking measures to reduce debt and improving debt management to reduce the risk of inflationary pressures, crowding out of private sector activity and continued liquidity shortages, expediting State-Owned Enterprise reform, rationalization of the public service and the elimination of ghost workers to reduce the employment cost to 30% of total expenditure, expansion of the revenue base through increased productivity and expansion of the economy, for the short to medium term – scrapping the bond note and strengthening the multiple currency regime, Central Bank Reform including the urgent audit of RBZ assets and liabilities, export promotion, narrowing the current account and rationalizing the capital account, accelerating ease of doing business reforms and promoting policy coherence.

Financial Sector Reform
Upon assuming office, a CCC Government will immediately embark on a process to transform Zimbabwe into an attractive financial services centre adopting models similar to Mauritius and Botswana. We will create a vibrant venture capital sector to assist entrepreneurs.

The CCC will introduce policies and incentives to attract international capital into the local venture capital sector with an emphasis on creating new businesses in key areas such as tech, manufacturing, agro-processing, and mining beneficiation, among others.

We will strengthen the existing development banks and institutions through recapitalization programs, bringing back international development finance institutions.

The CCC will implement broad measures to strengthen oversight over the financial services sector by establishing an independent body, separate from the Central Bank to supervise financial institutions.

We will seek amendments to the Banking Act to enhance good corporate governance and strengthen corrective measures and stop measures that prejudice depositors.

Currency Reform
Zimbabwe has an ongoing currency crisis that is adversely affecting the economy and resulting in irrational outcomes such as multi-tier pricing and a multi-tier foreign exchange rate. To resolve this, the CCC will adopt both short and long term measures.

In the short term, the CCC will immediately scrap the bond note, return to the multiple-currency regime, rationalize the capital account, increase productivity, and grow the national GDP in order to build substantive reserves for the country.

We will also ring-fence USD bank balances to protect depositors against any further shocks.

The CCC recognizes that in the long term, it is not sustainable for Zimbabwe to continue to use a basket of multiple currencies as legal tender.

We are alive to the fact that the USD does exacerbate the challenges of high-cost structures as well as adversely affect Zimbabwe’s exports.

In the long term, we believe a complete solution to the Zimbabwean currency crisis lies in a currency model built on regional integration.

Central Bank Reform
The CCC will amend Banking legislation to establish an independent Central Bank with a governor, a single deputy governor and a strong monetary policy committee.

We will ensure that the Central Bank sticks to its core function of monetary policy as well as the management of the national payments system.

The CCC will enact legislation that prevents the central government from borrowing from the Central Bank and put an end to murky debt assumptions by the citizens.

Restoring savings
A CCC Government will restore a savings culture in the country. We will create an environment that protects the interests of savers.

Citizens must not face punitive measures from the financial system which makes them averse to savings.

In this regard, we will implement measures to promote financial inclusion including for the rural economy, establish a credible Credit Reference Bureau, restore the operation of savings accounts and promote savings instruments including paid-up permanent shares and other savings paper to ensure that savings are at least 25% of the national GDP, monitor fee charges and lending rates to avoid arbitrage and usurious rates, restore mortgage finance facilities, return consumer lending and credit finance.

Fiscal Reforms
Fiscal consolidation is one of the most urgent and critical elements of stabilizing the Zimbabwean economy.

In this regard, a CCC government will reintroduce balanced budgeting to limit the exposure of the Government to the Central Bank, rationalize the public service, suspend all costly quasi-fiscal activities, rationalize Government expenditure, build capacity on budget management, expand the revenue base through measures to improve productivity and introduce a citizen portal for feedback on public services.

Conclusion -a CCC Government will create economic opportunities for all
The CCC will promote a market-led, entrepreneurial society that is socially just and inclusive.

This includes policy formulation that will deliberately take into account those who have previously had unequal access to opportunities by reason of gender, ethnicity, region, race and other points of disadvantage.

We will do this mindful of the fact that creating opportunities requires the construction of a stable and growing economy.

This also requires the state to ensure that there is adequate housing, a sustainable and clean environment, food and the realization of all socio-economic rights that will improve the daily life of all citizens.

RE: ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE OFFICIAL REPATRIATION OF THE CITIZENS OF THE ROYAL KINGDOM OF MTHWAKAZI FROM THE REPUBLIC OF SOUTH AFRICA TO THEIR HOMELAND AND THE REVIVAL AND RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATEHOOD AND NATIONHOOD OF THE SOVEREIGN KINGDOM OF MTHWAKAZI.

WHERE AS Matabeleland alias the Royal Mthwakazi Kingdom was an independent kingdom until her “conquest by the British South Africa Company (BSA Co.) on 4 November 1893” of behalf of the British Empire, resulting with our being subjected to 129 years of repression to date, and

WHERE AS the British Crown did grant the “Royal Charter of Incorporation to the BSA Co. on 29th October 1889.” and conferred to the BSA Co. all the powers of a government on all lands north of the Limpopo River, and

WHERE AS after the conquest of the Kingdom of Mthwakazi on 4th November 1893 Her Majesty’s government did legalize the contraband deal of the BSA Co. known as the “Victoria Agreement’ of 14th August 1893” in which the perpetrators connived to displace all our indigenous people from the habitable lands and to loot over half a million of the royal herd once Matabeleland had been conquered. And this, notwithstanding that Her Majesty’s government was fully aware that the Kingdom of Mthwakazi was a signatory to the Moffat Treaty of Peace and Unity (Between the Great White Queen of England and the Mighty Elephant of Matabeleland) signed by King Lobengula and Rev. Robert Moffat on behalf of Queen Victoria on 11 February 1888, and that the Respondent was also fully aware that both signatories were sovereign kingdoms and had legal obligations to respect their commitments to this Treaty, and

WHERE AS Her Majesty’s government legalized the criminal contract of the BSA Co. with its pioneers, through promulgating the “Matabeleland Order-in-Council of 18th July 1894” an act which usurped our sovereignty and formed the basis of conferring the jurisdiction to the BSA Co. to rule us, in Matabeleland by conquest, and

WHERE AS our ancestors through the Royal Council of Matabeleland did send Prince Nyamande to challenge the BSA Co.’s rule by conquest in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council on 19 July 1918 at which the ruling that: “The Ndebele Sovereignty had been broken up and replaced by a new, better system as defined by the Matabeleland Order- in-Council of 1894” was made resulting with our continued repression, and

WHERE AS Her Majesty’s government did replace the BSA Co. rule as a result of the said verdict, with the white supremacy rule through the “1923 Constitution of Southern Rhodesia” and conferred to them the powers of executing the Matabeleland Order-in-Council, resulting with the continuation of racial domination over Matabeleland while reserving exclusive privileges for the white people in a manner that prejudiced our life for a duration of 87 years, and

WHERE AS Her Majesty’s government did replace the white supremacy rule with a Zimbabwean Shona Majority rule in 1980 and conferred them with the powers of executing the Matabeleland Order-in-Council through “The Zimbabwe Constitution Order 1980 (S.I. 1980/390 of the United Kingdom) made 19th March 1980” which perpetrated tribal domination over Mthwakazi, while reserving exclusive privileges to Mashonaland through majority rule, in a manner which prejudiced our life for a duration of 42 years to date, bringing the total duration of the rule by conquest to 129 years, and

WHERE AS in August 2019 a Deed of Trust (The King Mzilikazi Royal Trust) was duly registered in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe RE: MA 000335, Protocol No: 22/19, whose registered aim is to seek to hold in trust, oversee, sustain, and preserve the Mthwakazi Nationhood and hold in trust the Royal Monarch Institution with its Traditional structures, land, resources, cultures and languages of the Ndebele State as at 1893, and

WHERE AS the number one objective (4a) of said trust deed is to re-establish and sustain the Mthwakazi Nationhood, and

WHERE AS the beneficiaries of this trust deed are the descendants of the Ndebele State prior to 1893, and

WHERE AS on 26th March 2020, a Resolution was taken by the trustees of the said Trust Deed to: cede and transfer trust and ownership of The King Mzilikazi Royal Trust to the Founder, Stanley Raphael Khumalo and fully endorsing him as His Royal Majesty King Mzilikazi II of the Kingdom of Mthwakazi/ Ndebele State, in accordance with the aims and objectives of the trust, and

NOW THAT His Royal Majesty King Mzilikazi II, as Sovereign Ruler of The Royal Kingdom of Mthwakazi, having ascended to the throne and assumed all the authority to rule the Kingdom of Mthwakazi, has issued/ created/ promulgated the Royal Charter of the Royal Kingdom of Mthwakazi as an instrument to revive and restore the Kingdom.

ROGUE POLICE OFFICERS PLEAD GUILTY TO TORTURING WOMAN

SOME Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers have pleaded guilty to torturing a Harare woman, whom they brutalised last year.

30 year-old Zororo Mazhawidza was left bleeding from her private parts and nursing some injuries after she was severely assaulted and tortured at Harare Central Police Station in the presence of her one month-old baby by two ZRP officers identified as Constable Murwisi and Constable Mandeya.

Mazhawidza was assaulted by Constable Murwisi and Constable Mandeya, who arrested her on 10 March 2021 after accusing her of stealing a Pre-paid Command Agriculture Fuel Card belonging to one Reginald and converting the fuel for her own use, a charge which she denied and told the ZRP officers that she was just simply holding onto the pre-paid fuel card as lien to secure payment of her US$1 100 which she had advanced to Reginald.

The torture by Constable Murwisi and Constable Mandeya, Mazhawidza said, entailed placing a wooden plank behind her knees and lifting her in the air such that her head was upside down before they started assaulting her with truncheons just below her backsides which resulted in her defecating and urinated on herself.

The assault and torture only stopped after Mazhawidza produced the pre-paid fuel card.

After the torture, Constable Murwisi and Constable Mandeya ordered her to clean up her faeces and to dispose of it.

Later on, Mazhawidza was released without any charge preferred against her.

After being dismayed by the dehumanising treatment at the hands of the ZRP officers, Mazhawidza engaged Tinashe Chinopfukutwa of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, who sued both Constable Murwisi and Constable Mandeya in their personal capacity together with Home ffairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Hon. Kazembe Kazembe and ZRP
Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga for ZWL900 000 in damages arising from the torture.

Out of the ZWL900 000, Mazhawidza wants Constable Murwisi, Constable Mandeya, Hon. Kazembe and Matanga, to pay her ZWL300 000 as damages for pain and suffering, ZWL300 000 for unlawful arrest and detention and ZWL300 000 for embarrassment, humiliation, affront to dignity and contumelia.

In response to Mazhawidza’s summons, Constable Murwisi, Constable Mandeya, Hon. Kazembe and Matanga, who are represented by Luckson Muradzikwa of the Attorney General’s Office wrote to Chinopfukutwa telling the human rights lawyer that his clients were not disputing liability and sought to settle the matter out of court as there is no
plausible defence on the merits of the case.

Muradzikwa told Chinopfukutwa that his clients wants the damages claim of ZWL900 000 to be revised downwards.

However, Chinopfukutwa insisted that the damages sought are justified due to the circumstances of the case and Constable Murwisi, Constable Mandeya, Hon. Kazembe and Matanga should pay the full amount.

Judgment on the matter is pending before the Harare Magistrate Court

Musengezi Remanded In Custody

A former Zanu PF youth league member, who challenged President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s 2017 ascendancy to power, appeared in court yesterday facing charges of fraudulently acquiring a ruling party membership card.

Represented by Doug Coltart and Nqobani Sithole, Sybeth Musengezi appeared before Harare magistrate Yeukai Dzuda and was remanded in custody to today for bail hearing.

The State said Musengezi used various addresses to fraudulently obtain a Zanu PF card and contest the party’s elections.

“The other address which the accused submitted did not exist. There is another address in Budiriro which the accused used, but it was confirmed that the accused did not reside there,” the State submitted.

“Musengezi’s homestead in Mt Darwin was another address which was used and following investigations we discovered that the accused never resided there….”

There are six witnesses in the case, the State said.

The State averred that Musengezi was a bad candidate for bail because he had business interests outside the country and was likely to flee.

The court alleges that on a date yet to be established in 2012, Musengezi acting in common purpose with Allen Chisuko and Taurai Mutimbanyoka misrepresented to Zanu PF that he resided at House Number 4315 Hatcliffe Extension, Harare in order to become a member of the party’s Muzinda 1A district.

The court heard that as a result of the misrepresentation, Musengezi fraudulently became a member of that district.

The State also alleges that in 2019 the accused again connived with Mutimbanyoka and misrepresented that he Musengezi, was a cell member of Zanu PF’s Mai Chitepo branch (Muzinda 1 district) and that he resided at house number 4461 Hatcliffe Extension, Harare.

As a result of the misrepresentation, Musengezi became eligible to contest for a Zanu PF branch post.

Anesu Chirenje prosecuted.

FULL TEXT: Police Bans Use Of Spikes

The commissioner General of Police has noted with concern allegations that some police officers are using hand held spikes whilst trying to stop some errant motorists evading checkpoints and general enforcement of road rules and regulations in the country.

These allegations have resulted in varied views from the public including parliamentarians.

In this regard, the Commissioner General of Police has with immediate effect banned the use of hand held spikes by any Police Officers whilst performing traffic enforcement duties throughout the country. Any police officer who will defy this directive will be arrested and face both criminal and stern disciplinary action. No police officer will be allowed to move around whilst openly holding or carrying spikes under the guise of traffic enforcement.

Police commanders at various levels have been ordered to ensure that this directive is strictly complied with, by police officers. The Zimbabwe Republic Police will only stick to the use of standard and approved spikes as the norm where these are strategically used at conventional road blocks and checkpoints.

The spikes are laid down on the ground with certified specification to assist police officers to control motorists who will try to evade roadblocks by driving through the roadblocks or sideways and in the process pose as a danger to other motorists, the general public and police officers.

The police also appeals to drivers to stop whenever directed to do so by police officers on the roads. We have observed that in major cities such as Harare and Bulawayo some kombis and pirate taxis especially those with no number plates do not stop at police roadblocks or police checkpoints. This makes it difficult for police officers to either arrest or trace them to account for their illegal activities.

On the other hand, the police has noted with concern that there are some public service vehicles and pirate taxis who get involved in road traffic accidents or openly go through red robots and later on claim they were running away from police officers or spike has been thrown at them. In most cases initial enquiries have revealed that they will be trying to cover up for their criminal conduct.

In the same vein, the police urges all public service vehicles operators to seriously introspect on the manner they are conducting their operations in the country and genuinely assist in the maintenance of law and order on the roads. The recent pronouncement by His Excellency President ED Mnangagwa on the operations of public service vehicles should be a guide on the need to ensure that PSV drivers and crew are strictly adhering to the laws of the country.

Therefore there is no need for transport operators to put money first at the expense of the travelling public. It is a fact that law and order and business go hand in hand. This means that public service operators should be beacons of peace and law and order in all their activities.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is ready to work with relevant arms of government and other stakeholders to ensure that road safety is prioritized by all motorists.

Can Zim Take Advantage Of Global Food Supply Gaps

By Victor Bhoroma| The Zimbabwean government recently reviewed upwards producer prices for maize, traditional grains, soya beans and sunflower in line with inflation and the need to improve supply in the market. The new floor prices for maize and traditional grains are ZW$75,000 per Metric Tonne (MT), for Soya Beans ZW$171,495/MT and for Sunflower ZW$205,795/MT. When paired against the pegged central bank exchange rate, the producer prices are way overvalued. However, the better picture in terms of planning comes when the prices are paired against the ruling current exchange rates on the market. However, the disparity in terms of prices is an arbitrage pricing, hoarding and rent seeking loophole which will be immediately exploited.

Table 1: Government Floor Prices

CropZW$ Price (Per MT)US$ Price           (Formal Auction Rate)US$ Price                            (Market Rate)
Maize/Traditional Grains$75,000$470.67$187.50
Soya Beans$171,495$1,076.23$428.74
Sunflower$205,795$1,291.48$514.49
Wheat$175,742$1,102.88$439.36

Impact of Ukraine War

Prior to the war in Ukraine, international food prices had already reached an all-time high and the war has exacerbated global food shortages. The shortages are affecting Southern Africa in the form of high food prices, imported inflation, and commodity shortages.

Ukraine and Russia account for 29% of global wheat experts and 62% of sunflower oil supplies. They are both key producers of barley and maize as well. Globally, 50 countries depend on Russia and Ukraine for at least 30% of their wheat import needs. In that context, this war has multiple implications for global markets and food security, representing a challenge for food security for many countries, and especially low-income food import dependent countries. Nevertheless, it can represent an opportunity for the African continent which is struggling to fully utilize abundant arable land. The vast continent has 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land yet Africa is heavily reliant on food imports from high income countries. Over the past decade, the continent has seen growing demand for cereal crops, including wheat, soya, and sunflower, which has been mainly supported by imports instead of local production. Africa’s wheat imports increased by 68% between 2007 to 2020, surging to over 49 million tonnes. Such is the potential to produce and take advantage of the global food supply gap for countries such as Zimbabwe with vast tracts of arable land.

Zimbabwe Agriculture Status

Zimbabwe has 39.6 million hectares of land, with about 42 percent being suitable for agriculture purposes. However, only 35% of that arable land is being fully utilized for crop production. Crop production in the country is largely rain fed with only 40% of the total arable land receiving rainfall considered adequate for crop cultivation. Zimbabwe has one of the highest levels of food insecurity in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) regardless of seasonal variations in rainfall patterns. Small holder farmers are highly vulnerable to climate change due to overdependence on rainfall, thus extreme weather conditions further intensify low productivity and poverty. As a result of the above, Harare has been a net importer of food for the past 2 decades and the country’s import bill has increasingly featured grain imports with maize imports averaging 1.1 million Metric Tonnes (MT) per year from 2010 to 2020, while wheat and soya beans account for 300 000MT and 150 000MT in import quantities respectively. Imports for these three raw grain commodities cost the country at least US$600 million in 2020 alone. This is before processed cereal and other agricultural commodities are factored into the import equation. However, above normal rainfall in 2021 improved maize yield to 2.7 million MT from 980,000MT in 2020. There was also marked improvement in production for wheat and traditional grains in 2021.

Decline in agricultural productivity

Zimbabwe’s fast tracked Land Reform Program left a huge dent on the country’s food security status, land tenure, investment levels and value-addition of agriculture exports. However, it’s now 22 years after the land reform program, yet production looks very fragile along rainfall pattern lines. Yield per hectare for maize (the staple crop in Zimbabwe) remains very low with average national yield less than 0.7 tons per hectare (Lower than the African average of 1.8 tons/ha). The yield is also lower than SADC peers who are largely affected by the same climatic conditions, with Namibia, Malawi and Mozambique at 1.2 tons/ha, Tanzania at 1.3 tons/ha, Zambia at 2.5 tons/ha and South Africa at 5.3 tons/ha.

Consequently, Zimbabwe was South Africa’s largest maize market in 2019 and 2020, accounting for 30% of the official exports. Interestingly since the year 2000, Zambia has tripled its maize production with an average of 2.9 million MT per year in the past 10 years alone and constantly exporting maize to its southern neighbor. The following are some of the key challenges bedeviling Zimbabwe’s agriculture potential and inhibiting any chance to take advantage of the global food supply gaps in the short to medium term.

Lack of title and capital

Commercial agriculture is capital intensive and private capital plays a key role in filling that financing gap. However, most resettled farmers in Zimbabwe have no bankable title deeds to their land which makes it worthless as an asset and difficult to access credit from financial institutions. The issued (to selected farmers) 99-year leases are not transferable, hence not appealing to the banking sector in an environment where confidence and policy consistency are in short supply. The law still gives the government the right to revoke the lease using its own discretion, which makes land a key political tool in the country. Without sufficient funding, local farmers cannot significantly increase yield to take advantage of the shortages or rally in world prices.

Limited irrigation models

Local rainfall patterns have adversely changed in the last few years due to climate change and over 60% of the country receives rainfall is not adequate for crop cultivation. This means that funding for irrigation equipment is critical. Zimbabwe has over 10,747 small to large dams and rivers covering an approximate area of 117, 662 hectares of land. Thus, there is huge potential to irrigate more than 2 million hectares of land. However, less than 173,000 hectares are currently under irrigation. The utilization of existing water bodies remains very low. Successful irrigation schemes do not only guarantee food security but they enable farmers the liberty to try other cash crops while venturing in all year round farming.

Low levels of mechanization

Most of the agriculture in Zimbabwe is driven by manual labour, Ox drawn power and other subsistence methods that yield well on organic quality but very low on volume. Zimbabwe needs over 30,000 tractors, thousands of combine harvesters and other farm implements that are key to reducing the cost of production and improving yield. This is the modern reality of farming where countries such as United States, Brazil, China, Australia, Russia, and Ukraine have mastered to increase yield per hectare. Regrettably, the deficit in mechanization cannot be addressed overnight or in the short to medium term. Similarly, it cannot be done through government funding alone.

Government policy

In the last 20 years, Zimbabwe’s monetary, fiscal, and agricultural policies have not been friendly to primary producers of agriculture commodities.

This the major reason why several small holder farmers have given up large tracts of land for other income generating activities such small scale mining. Constraints faced by farmers range from high levels of inflation (increase in prices of inputs and services), inefficient foreign exchange markets, delays in payments, subeconomic producer prices, export bans, limited training, and lack of access to markets for remote farmers. To address these issues, pricing must be left to farmers’ associations while the commodity exchange market should address market access and payments issues. The government should only partake in buying grains up to the level of stocking strategic reserves or for emergency interventions in distributing food to households. As such government policy must be geared towards creating markets where farmers meet suppliers independently and allowing prices to match regional prices to incentivize primary production. Without this, Zimbabwe cannot (sustainably) be counted as an agricultural commodities exporter in Africa.

Agriculture in Zimbabwe is now dominated by the state which plays the role of price setting, regulation, providing subsidies and loans (financing), purchasing, and paying, and setting policies that often change course anytime. The government predominantly prefers giving inputs subsidies to small holder farmers, pegging producer prices and centralizing land tenure for political reasons. Most local farmers have folded their hands on self-financing in order to get cheap inputs from the government. Viability and government policy is draining a few successful commercial farmers who could take advantage of the heightened global demand. Additionally, most small holder farmers have limited scope of farming as a business which makes it difficult to be agile and take advantage of global food supply gaps. Overall, Zimbabwe must first attain food security and fix legacy issues impacting agriculture production before aiming for the export market that has gone lucrative because of the Ukraine-Russia war and other global supply bottlenecks.

Parliamentarians Letting Citizens Down

By Jacob Kudzayi Mutisi | It is now clear that Zimbabwe’s MPs or parliamentarians are not playing their role to fix the mess that our country’s economic financial service is in. The Zimbabwean government has had Statutory Instruments (SI) after SI being introduced year in year out hoping that the nation’s financial crisis will be miraculously solved.

We are now the only country on earth, where the US Dollar trades at seven different exchange rates, in reality we have :-

$1 = auction rate

$1 = interbank rate

$1 = black market rate

$1 = ecocash

$1 = rtgs swipe

$1 = bond cash

$1 = nostro bank transfer

It is literally impossible to have a company budget for your organization or simply to make a living out of this current status quo.

Zimbabwe’s parliament has three core functions

1. to represent citizens’ interests.

2. to pass laws

3. to monitor the actions of the government.

As a citizen of Zimbabwe, my question is, are the nation’s parliamentarians or MPs paying their assigned role. Do we have toothless parliamentarians? What role are our MPs playing to salvage the economic crisis in this country?

It is time for the citizens, including the business community to start demanding dialogue and question the role of our MPs. We are in this mess because our MPs and parliamentarians are not playing their elected role. They are watching from the sideline. Why are decisions being made before their eyes and yet they are not questioning these decisions.

No citizen should blame His Excellency President ED Mnangagwa, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube or the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), blame the MP who are elected to represent the people and protect the interests of the nations. We also have to blame the citizens and the businesses community who are not demanding accountability from their elected members. Their major role being to question decisions that are made.

We have had a five year cycle from a US dollar to a Zim dollar and back to a US dollar then a 1 to 1 to back to a Zim dollar and the cycle continues. We are in deep trouble, this will not end until citizens and businesses demand accountability and elect MPs who understand the three core functions of parliament. The Zimbabwean Government needs advice and solutions and our MPs are not playing their part.

Man Disguises As Woman, Gets Married For 16months

A man from Honde Valley reportedly disguised himself as a woman and was married for 16 months while performing all the duties expected of a new bride.

The man, Morris Muchena, disguised himself as Emily Muswere from Murehwa and would even become intimate with ‘‘her husband’’, Andrew Chafa

Morris was finally exposed in Honde Valley during a recent female soccer match between his team and another one from Chisuko Village — which happens to be his original village.

The nibble-footed Morris charmed football fans with his moves thereby putting him in the spotlight. His childhood peers identified him and exposed him.

Morris was summoned by village head Madzinga, Mr Webster Mhuru, for a hearing where he confessed that he was indeed a man who had disguised himself as a woman.h

He also said he is part of a satanic cult and claimed that he changes into a woman during the night in order to satisfy his ‘‘husband’’ in bed.

One of the soccer players who were in the match that was Morris’ undoing said they challenged him to remove his wig but he adamantly refused. She said on condition of anonymity:

We challenged him to remove his wig, but he refused. He said if he removed it he would disappear for 24 hours. We were frightened and waited for his husband, Andrew, to come.

When Andrew arrived, he was shocked. He said he had not realised that he was sharing the same bed with a man. Andrew said it was the end of their marriage.

Another player said they were so happy to have Morris on their team as he played well.

Members of the Chafa family and villagers interviewed said they had suspected that Morris — alias Emily — was a man due to his masculinity.

Village head Madzinga said Andrew got married to ‘Emily’ around November 2020.

Madzinga added Morris’ relatives travelled from Chisuko a few days after he was exposed saying they were looking for him.

Morris was summoned to Madzinga’s homestead where he arrived dressed as a woman.

He initially denied knowing his two relatives but later later confessed that he is a man.

It is said Morris chronicled how he was initiated by a Harare friend into a satanic cult that enables him to turn into a woman whenever ‘her husband’ wants to be intimate with ‘her’.

He said following the initiation, he started having weird dreams; before meeting Andrew and falling in love with him.

It also emerged that Morris was a teacher at a private school in Harare before he stopped reporting for duty at the time of his ‘marriage’.

He acquired his primary and secondary education in Chisuko, Honde Valley; then deserted his family two years ago.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the incident and said while investigations are still underway, it appears like Morris and Andrew were in a consensual same-sex marriage.

The award recognises individuals who have created a viable business, showcasing entrepreneurship and innovation.

Chiedza said: “Not only am I passionate about fashion, I am equally passionate about community development and empowering upcoming designers because they have so much to contribute to this ever growing industry.

The objective of ZFS was to highlight and give emerging designers a platform that showcased their talent and skill. Through this platform, several designers have gone on to launch reputable fashion careers both locally and internationally.

As an extension of her work in the fashion industry, Chiedza acquired the pageant rights for Miss World Zimbabwe UK, a platform created to recognise aspiring Zimbabwean women who have a passion for modelling, and a desire to contribute meaningfully to their communities through charitable work.

Committed to sustainable and ethical luxury fashion, Chiedza saw a gap in the market to create luxurious and quality lingerie for the curvier woman. And in 2019, launched Miss Chii. Through Miss Chii, Chiedza continues to promote, celebrate, and empower women of all shapes and sizes by helping them discover the beauty within themselves. Chamisa Proffers Solutions To Collapsing Economy

By-CCC President Nelson Chamisa said that he has the answers to the ailing economy.

Chamisa said this this week when he was responding Zanu PF government’s dramatic ban on bank landing to corporates.

As a result of Mnangagwa’s announcement, prices of basic commodities started to rise.

Posting on the party’s social media platforms, CCC said they had the solutions to the failing economy.

Posted CCC:

The 7 May economic policy announcement by

@edmnangagwa

shows that the economy has collapsed. Hyperinflation, eroded wages, extreme poverty & an illegal bank lending freeze have made life harder for the citizens. In line with our #AlternativeGovtAgenda, we propose the following:

Biti Dismisses Mnangagwa Economic Growth Rhetoric

Below is Hon Tendai Biti’s presentation on Twitter:

The regime has announced a potpourri of contradictory, self-defeating, punitive & vindictive measures with the intended aim of stopping or reversing the dramatic & rambunctious free fall of the Zimbabwean $ &the consequential inflationary spike experienced in the last two weeks.

Truth is the measures are I’ll think & reflective of a paranoid moribund incompetent regime that believes everything & everyone is an enemy & a saboteurs regime that blames everyone except itself for the humongous mess it has plunged Zim into a regime that sees shadows everywhere

The dramatic fall of the exchange rate stems from the introduction of the Zim$ when the necessary preconditions were absent. It stems from a huge mismatch between supply & demand. It stems from the failure of the Dutch auction system. It stems from a huge budget deficit monetized through the printing of money.

It stems from corruption & the billions of Zim$ being pummeled into the system from illegal deals Given this only full & unmitigated re-dollarization provides a short term solution. Anything else, including the regime’s new measure, is an absolute joke and a sheer worst of time.

Policymaking must never be allowed to be anecdotal or a product of beer hall diatribe. The new measures smack of that.

Broad sweeping statements & conclusions are made without evidence & data. Major decisions are made without analysing the legalities of the measures or their consequences on the macro or micro level.

We have always argued that this is the worst government in the history of governments & the latest measures prove that.

The key points of the new measures are as follows a) continuation of the Dutch auction system. b)Suspension of all lending by Banks. c) Suspension of major services by stockbrokers. d) Increase in Capital Gains to 40% from 20 % on shares sold in less than 270 days e) 2 % levy on US$ cash withdrawals above a $1000. f) Increase in IMMT tax on US$ transactions to 4 % & 2% on Zim $ g) Retailers & businesses allowed to charge in US$ on a willing buyer willing seller exchange rate regime. h) US$ taxes to the government now to be paid on the willing buyer willing seller exchange rate regime.

We now await the legal instruments necessary to effect the above measures. Save to say that massive litigation is inevitable. For instance, it is blatantly unlawful to ban banks from lending when it is their core business. The new taxes & proposed civil penalties are unlawful.

The truth of the matter is that Zimbabwe deserves better. It deserves new leadership. Sure, #NgaapindeHakeMukomana

Aston Villa Mentor Speaks On Liverpool Defeat

Aston Villa coach Steven Gerrard has revealed the reason behind Marvelous Nakamba’s substitution in the 2-1 league defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday.

Nakamba was in the first XI and played impressively for an hour as a defensive midfielder. He had last started in a match in early December when he picked up a knee injury that required surgery.

The Zimbabwean was replaced by Carney Chukwuemeka and Villa went on to concede just three minutes later after the change.

Explaining why Nakamba was subbed off, Gerrard told Birminghammail.co.uk: “The big frustration was that Marvelous Nakamba couldn’t carry on because he asked to be changed.

“We knew he would run out of steam at some point and Douglas went into the middle and, obviously, the ball got stolen off him. Maybe with Marv that might not have happened but, look, it is what it is and we have to look after Marv and his body. That’s the most important thing. We’re disappointed with both goals we’ve conceded.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Soldiers Attack Villagers

Dozens of villagers near Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo Airbase in Chegutu were on Tuesday allegedly assaulted by soldiers reportedly searching for a machete gangster who had assaulted their colleague.

According to pictures seen by NewsDay, the assaulted villagers sustained injuries on their faces, heads, legs and hands.

Some of the assault victims received medical attention at Chegutu General Hospital, according to a medical report in possession of NewsDay.

Contacted for comment, Air Force of Zimbabwe spokesperson Squadron leader Donovan Muroyiwa said he was yet to receive the report, but said an investigation had already been launched to ascertain the claims.

Villagers said the soldiers stormed their homes at around 11pm, inquiring the whereabouts of a machete gangster who had allegedly been involved in an altercation with their colleague.

The soldiers, reportedly armed with guns and knobkerries, damaged doors to gain entry to villagers’ houses. They also stormed a homestead where villagers were attending a funeral and harassed mourners.

“They were beating everyone who professed ignorance of the whereabouts of the alleged gangster,” one villager said, adding they were now living in fear.

“It was around 11pm when a loud bang at the door woke me up. At first, I thought they were thieves until I saw soldiers clad in uniform. They accused us of hiding their suspect.”

Another villager said: “I saw two truckloads of soldiers, who were dropping off at various homesteads, interrogating and assaulting villagers over the whereabouts of a man who injured a soldier with a knife.

“I witnessed the altercation between the soldier and the man. They had a misunderstanding over a woman while drinking beer at a local bar.”

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said he had not yet received the report.

In December, a soldier shot and killed five people at a shopping centre in Mhondoro after a misunderstanding with a villager.

Govt Says Sorry For Removing Joshua Nkomo Shield

By Dorrothy Moyo | Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration has apologised for removing the artisitic Joshua Nkomo logo at the airport in Bulawayo.

In a statement, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said Government has already gone to tender for the production of the new signage.

“The ministry regrets the hasty removal of the signage at JM Nkomo International Airport without notifying all stakeholders.
“The ministry takes pleasure in informing all stakeholders that we have already gone to tender for new signage that incorporates all stakeholder concerns. Wider consultations are ongoing on the best signage which will factor in regional sentiments and desires,” he said, responding to criticism from far and wide.

Broadcast journo Ezra Sibanda, among others said:

The new ugly signage

The removal of the Shield/IHAWU from Joshua Nkomo International Airport on the 5th of May 2022 by workmen, allegedly on orders from their superiors in Harare has angered many people. In its place, a new design of the airport signage with colours of the Zimbabwe flag and the coat of arms went up. This was unnecessary at all and no reasons have been given. Zimbabweans need some mechanism to deal with past injustices and atrocities and the removal of this emblem and replaced by a government court of arms insignia rekindle the bad events which happened in the past.

The government should reconsider its decision and erect and put back iHawu at JMN Airport. The emblem is a cultural symbol for the Nguni people, the Matabeleland people. Those who ordered the removal of the symbol should know culture shapes our identity and influences our behaviours, and cultural diversity makes us accept, and even to some extent, integrate and assimilate with other cultures. The people who ordered the removal should know cultural diversity has become very important in today’s world, our chances of interacting with people from various races, ethnic groups and cultures is far greater now than it has been ever before.

If you put aside any prejudices or biases you might have and you are open to other people, it can help prepare you to listen, talk and learn about other people and their cultures. Diversity is not only important for adults, but children should be learning about different cultures too so removing iHawu what are you teaching Zimbabwean young ones especially those who live in diverse cities and towns? It is extremely important for adults to teach kids to be accepting of different cultures because if children are not taught, then they become more close-minded, so do the right thing. The Government of Zimbabwe should force the Emblem to be put back and demand answers on why it was removed. Respect Father Zimbabwe, Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo. He is the founding father of our great nation!

Blood rituals after kidnap

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident yesterday.

Is Formula Milk Good For Your Baby?

Formula milk companies are paying social media platforms and influencers to gain direct access to pregnant women and mothers at some of the most vulnerable moments in their lives. The global formula milk industry, valued at some US$ 55 billion, is targeting new mothers with personalized social media content that is often not recognizable as advertising.

A new World Health Organization (WHO) report titled Scope and impact of digital marketing strategies for promoting breast-milk substitutes has outlined the digital marketing techniques designed to influence the decisions new families make on how to feed their babies.

Through tools like apps, virtual support groups or ‘baby-clubs’, paid social media influencers, promotions and competitions and advice forums or services, formula milk companies can buy or collect personal information and send personalized promotions to new pregnant women and mothers.

The report summarizes findings of new research that sampled and analyzed 4 million social media posts about infant feeding published between January and June 2021 using a commercial social listening platform. These posts reached 2.47 billion people and generated more than 12 million likes, shares or comments.

Formula milk companies post content on their social media accounts around 90 times per day, reaching 229 million users; representing three times as many people as are reached by informational posts about breastfeeding from non-commercial accounts.

This pervasive marketing is increasing purchases of breast-milk substitutes and therefore dissuading mothers from breastfeeding exclusively as recommended by WHO.

“The promotion of commercial milk formulas should have been terminated decades ago,” said Dr Francesco Branca, Director of the WHO Nutrition and Food Safety department. “The fact that formula milk companies are now employing even more powerful and insidious marketing techniques to drive up their sales is inexcusable and must be stopped.”

The report compiled evidence from social listening research on public online communications and individual country reports of research that monitors breast-milk substitute promotions, as well as drawing on a recent multi-country study of mothers’ and health professionals’ experiences of formula milk marketing. The studies show how misleading marketing reinforces myths about breastfeeding and breast milk and undermines women’s confidence in their ability to breastfeed successfully.

The proliferation of global digital marketing of formula milk blatantly breaches the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes (the Code), which was adopted by the 1981 World Health Assembly.

The Code is a landmark public health agreement designed to protect the general public and mothers from aggressive marketing practices by the baby food industry that negatively impact breastfeeding practices.

Despite clear evidence that exclusive and continued breastfeeding are key determinants of improved lifelong health for children, women and communities, far too few children are breastfed as recommended. If current formula milk marketing strategies continue, that proportion could fall still further, boosting companies’ profits.

The fact that these forms of digital marketing can evade scrutiny from national monitoring and health authorities means new approaches to Code-implementing regulation and enforcement are required. Currently, national legislation may be evaded by marketing that originates beyond borders.

WHO has called on the baby food industry to end exploitative formula milk marketing, and on governments to protect new children and families by enacting, monitoring and enforcing laws to end all advertising or other promotion of formula milk products.

Cops Torture Harare Woman, Leaves Her For Dead

By- The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights has exposed two members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) who tortured a Harare woman.

ZLHR said Constable Murwisi and Constable Mandeya brutally assaulted 30-year-old Zororo Mazhawidza at Harare Central Police Station in the presence of her one-month-old baby.

The torture and assault occurred on 10 March 2021.

Mazhawidza was left bleeding from her private parts and nursing some injuries following the assault.

The cops reportedly placed a wooden plank behind her knees and lifted her in the air such that her head was upside down.

They then started assaulting her with truncheons just below her backsides which resulted in her defecating and urinating on herself.

The police officers accused Mazhawidza of stealing a Pre-paid Command Agriculture Fuel Card belonging to one Reginald and converting the fuel for her own use.

However, Mazhawidza told the police officers that she had not stolen the pre-paid fuel card but was just simply holding onto it until Reginald paid her US$1 100 which she had advanced to him.

The assault and torture only stopped after Mazhawidza produced the pre-paid fuel card.

The cops instructed Mazhawidza to clean up her mess and dispose of it. They later released her without any charge preferred against her.

Through ZLHR’s Tinashe Chinopfukutwa, Mazhawidza sued both Constable Murwisi and Constable Mandeya in their personal capacity together with Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe and ZRP Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga for ZWL$900 000 in damages arising from the torture.

In response to Mazhawidza’s summons to the respondents, Luckson Muradzikwa of the Attorney General’s Office wrote to Chinopfukutwa seeking to settle the matter out of court.

Muradzikwa told Chinopfukutwa that his clients want the damages claim of ZWL$900 000 to be reduced but the latter insisted that Constable Murwisi, Constable Mandeya, Kazembe and Matanga should pay the full amount.

Judgment on the matter is pending before the Harare Magistrate Court.

What’s your comment on this audio by ED. ED was coercing maSabhuku to take every voter under their jurisdiction to polling stations and make sure that they all vote for ZANU-PF. ED was also threatening rural opposition supporters with death.

Abraham’s Covenant

Sabbath School Summary
By Elder Dr MASIMBA Mavaza
The Covenant With Abraham

Lesson 7

Memory Text: “But Abram said, ‘Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?’ ” (Genesis 15:2, NKJV).

Introduction.

With Genesis 15, we come to the crucial moment when God for-malizes His covenant with Abraham. The Abrahamic covenant is the second covenant, after the covenant with Noah. Like Noah’s covenant, Abraham’s covenant involves other nations, as well, for ultimately, the covenant with Abraham is part of the everlasting covenant, which is offered to all humanity (Gen. 17:7, Heb. 13:20). This episode of Abraham’s life is full of fear and laughter. Abram is afraid (Gen. 15:1), as are Sarah (Gen. 18:15) and Hagar (Gen. 21:17). Abram laughs (Gen. 17:17), and Sarah (Gen. 18:12), and Ishmael, too (Gen. 21:9, ESV). These chapters resonate with human sensitivity and warmth. Abram is passionate about the salvation of the wicked Sodomites; he is caring toward Sarah, Hagar, and Lot; and he is hospitable toward the three foreigners (Gen. 18:2-6).

It is in this context that Abram, whose name implies nobility and respectability, will have his name changed into Abraham, which means “father of many nations” (Gen. 17:5). Thus, we see here more hints of the universal nature of what God plans to do through His covenant with Abraham.

SABBATH: God didn’t forsake His world when sin increased after the Flood. Abram was called to step into faith. Abraham’s covenant is the second after that of Noah. All involved blessings for people (Gen. 15, 17:7, Heb. 13:20). There was a change of name; Abram (nobility & respect) to Abraham (father of all nations) (Gen. 17:5). His life was full of fear & laughter (Gen. 15:1, 18:15, 21:17, 17:17, 18:12, 18:2-6).

SUNDAY: Abram took God at His word that he’ll have a child from his “own body” (Gen. 15:4; 2 Sam. 7:12). He knew God keep promises because of His mercy & not human works as Egyptians believed works earn salvation. The animal gifts to God showed Christ’s future death; preying birds showed Israel’s 400 years slavery in Egypt; & the torch meant God keeps His promises (Gen. 15:1-21; Rom. 4:3, 4, 9, 22).

MONDAY: Ten years later after the promise of a son, Abram was still childless. Like Abram, we’re also tested to a point where our faith seem to be lost. Abram & Sarai lost hope. Sarai suggested He lays with Hagar, her servant, to fulfill God’s promise (a norm in the Near East). Like in Eden, Sarai & Eve take the lead in sin while Abram & Adam obey their wives without trusting God (Gen. 16:1-16, Gal. 4:21-31).

TUESDAY: Abraham’s sin led him away from God. But God spoke to him again after days of silence. In His agreement with the patriarch, God have him circumcision as a sign (Gen. 17:1-19, Rom. 4:11). This sign involved the spilling of blood, pointing to God’s sacrifice for us & the messianic prophecy (see Gen. 15:18, Exod. 4:25, Rom. 6:23, Titus 1:2). God also changed the name of Abram & Sarai (see Gen. 17:17).

WEDNESDAY: Every man child that was born in Abraham’s house was to be circumcised (Gen. 17:23-27). Thus, God’s promise of salvation was inclusive in nature. After “all/every” male is circumcised, God appeared to Abraham & promised him a son. Abraham’s hospitality (to Christ) brought him favor (Gen. 18:1-15, Rom. 9:9, Heb. 13:2, Gen. 20:4, Exod. 15:17, Matt. 25:35-40). Christ came again (Phil. 2:7, ?.

THURSDAY: Abraham lived to his name as the “father of nations” by hoping to save Lot in Sodom. He did not enjoy the good news of a son by being indifferent about the lives of others (Gen. 18:16-19:29). Abraham was a prophet who not only received God’s will but one who also intercedes for sinners. He prayed (Gen. 18:22). Sadly, not even 10 saints were in Sodom (Gen. 19:1-10, 15:16, PP, p. 157, 158).

FRIDAY: God has not called us to be judges over the lives of others but intercessors for people. The plea of Abraham to God on behalf of the people of Sodom bid us to pray for the wicked. How God was ready to listen to Abraham testifies His mercy to spare “the whole” for the sake of the righteous. Souls are perishing every day & we’re to be the voices of warning to a dying world (read Gen. 18:22-33).

Abraham’s Covenant- It’s a covenant God made with Abraham to bless all nations through the seed of Abraham. The covenant with Abraham is part of the everlasting covenant, which is offered to all humanity.

Abram- It meant “exalted father.” God changed it to Abraham to mean “father of all nations.”

Sarai- The wife of Abraham. It meant “my princess.” Her name was changed to Sarah to mean “princess for everyone”/ “mother of all nations.”

Isaac- The name means “he will laugh.” It is a reminder of Abraham’s first laughter (the first laughter recorded in the Bible; Gen. 17:17).

Ishmael- The firstborn of Abraham and son of Hagar. The name means “God hears” (Gen. 16:7). It echoes how Abraham “heeded” the voice of Sarah.

Boundaries of the Promised Land- We find it in Genesis 15:18. It reminds us of the boundaries of the Garden of Eden (Gen. 2:13, 14). It conveys the idea of the end-time salvation of God’s people and their return to Eden.

Christ- He was the one whom Abraham called, “my Lord” among the strangers (Gen. 18:3).

Sodom- It was reversed (God “overthrew”) just as the Flood reversed the original creation.

Discussion Questions

? Only the rainbow and circumcision are called “sign of the covenant.” What are the common points and the differences between the two covenants?

? Though called of God, and though often used in the New Testament as the example of what it means to live by faith, Abraham at times faltered. What lessons should we learn and not learn from his example?

? Some people argue against the idea that God will punish the lost, saying that this act would be against God’s love. How do we, as those who believe that—yes, God will punish the lost—respond to the argument that He doesn’t?

Bafana Bafana Legend Slams Hugo Broos Team Selection

Former Kaizer Chiefs forward Doctor Khumalo has criticised South Africa national team coach Hugo Broos’ criteria in his squad selection.

During the last Fifa international window, there was a debate about Broos overlooking Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Andile Jali as well as other players.

And Khumalo feels such players should be in the national squad considering their experience, winning mentality and Masandawana’s dominance in South African top-flight.

“Our national team coach, there are certain things he can’t do. He comes into the country, you can’t take away or shy away from what Sundowns is doing, the best team ever – they have the best players ever,” said Khumalo as quoted by iDiski Times.

“How do you go and play a serious match and sacrifice South Africans, not the national team and you leave out players that I strongly believe would have made a difference.

“There’s no way Ethan Brooks could play away against Ghana and give us results when Andile Jali is out there, an experienced player. But with the help of legends, masters, it would have been a difference. It would have made a difference.”

Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana will face Morocco in their first match of the Afcon 2023 Qualifiers before hosting Zimbabwe during the May 30- June 14 international break.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Formula Milk And Your Baby Health

RBZ Says Zimbabwe Flooded With Money And Now Spilling Over

By A Correspondent | The Reverve Bank Governor John Magudya has announced saying Zimbabwe is flooded with dollars everywhere.

Speaking in a recent interview (excerpt below), Mangudya, said there is an overspill of money such that it now needs to be controlled by a tap stop.

He said this while defending the recent presidential orders which as ZimEye reveals, have been criticised by bankers.

Mangudya said the orders are just for the short term. He said:

“In the short term, it’s not a long term, it’s a short term measures so that we deal with global economic instability.

“I will give an example of if you have got a water tank of water, and your pipe is putting water into the tank, when the tank is overspilling what do you do?

“You close the tank, right? So that the water doesn’t continue flowing into the tank, look at that in terms of money, that money was flowing into the economy, when you close the tap, it means that no money goes out again.

“So it means you use what is there, so it means that the level of the water in the dam or the tank, will start going down, so that’s what we envisage, so these things are short term, in as far as just as the water supply into a tank, when you close a tap. So when you close a tap…so these are supposed to be realised in the short term. ” – ZimEye.

Wadyajena’s ‘Gokwe Imported Noise’ Unsettles Borrowdale Brooke Residents

Residents of Borrowdale Brooke are not happy with the conduct of Gokwe-Nembudziya MP, Justice Mayor Wadyajena (Zanu-PF) after he allegedly spent more than three hours making noise with his sports car in the affluent suburb.

Borrowdale Brooke Golf Estate Chairman, Shingi Munyeza has written a letter of disapproval to Wadyajena after residents were reportedly woken up with terrified pets yelping because of the noise.

Prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono said that a senior ZANU-PF figure said Wadyajena’s conduct is damaging the party’s name.

In his letter to Wadyajena, Munyeza said the parliamentarian is entitled to have the type of car which makes the noise he wants but he should not ignore community rules as set out in the Borrowdale Brooke Home Owners Association Rule Book. The letter read:

I would like to bring to your attention that the residents of the Borrowdale Brooke Estate were offended and violated by the noise you were making when you drove around the Brooke in the early hours of the morning between midnight and lam on 11th May 2022.

We appreciate that you are entitled to have the type of car which makes the noise you want but to make that noise that woke up many of the Brooke residents is insensitive and disregards the community rules as set out in the Borrowdale Brooke Home Owners Association Rule Book, Clause 3.3. “The volume of music, electronic instruments, entertainment or activity of domestic employees should be at such level as not to cause a nuisance to any other residents”.

I have reached out to you over the past two months because of your violation of a number of rules and the residents’ outcry on other issues such as the violation of Clause Clause 2.2. : The speed limit within the estate shall be 40 kph and road signs displaying this limit will be placed in and around the road system.

It has become imperative and urgent that we meet so we can resolve these matters amicably in line with our rules and regulations.

Please contact me so that we can meet to resolve this untenable situation that you have created amongst the residents in the Brooke.

RBZ To Name And Shame Unscrupulous Borrowers

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), in a bid to stem the spiralling parallel market rates for the United States (US) dollar, has threatened to name and shame individuals who have borrowed large sums of money from banks.

On Tuesday, the local currency fell against the US dollar, trading at around $400 to the US dollar on the parallel market, while it is trading at around $280 on the interbank market.

Last week, President Emmerson Mnangagwa was forced to hurriedly announce measures aimed at stabilising the economy, which included suspension of lending by banks.

In a statement yesterday, the RBZ accused people who borrowed from banks of manipulating the official interbank market.

“In the wake of manipulation of the exchange rate by some borrowers of large amounts to the detriment of consumers, the bank reserves the right to publish the names of significant borrowers across the banking sector in the public interest,” read the statement.

Since 2020, the central bank has, to no avail, put in place several measures to halt the rapid depreciation of the local currency.

Last year, government embarked on a name and shame operation targeting companies and individuals accused of fuelling the galloping foreign currency parallel exchange rate.

It also introduced Statutory Instrument 127 of 2021 which prohibited business operators from charging above the official exchange rate and empowered authorities to punish those who refused to accept the local currency.

Analysts scoffed at the RBZ decision saying it would cripple the already ailing economy.

Economist Gift Mugano said: “It just shows they have run out of ideas. Borrowing money from a bank is a normal business transaction. There is nothing shameful about borrowing money from the bank, because it is legal. One is entitled to borrow as much money as he or she wants as long as they will be able to pay back. It is worrisome when policymakers come up with such policies. Unless they amend the Banking Act, which allows people to borrow money from the bank, there will be nothing wrong with borrowing money from the bank. But amending the Banking Act is as good as shutting down the economy.”

Lawyer Alex Magaisa said: “You want to ‘name and shame’ persons for ‘significant borrowing’, something that is wholly legal? When has ‘significant borrowing’ been an offence? If you know persons who have taken advantage of, and abused your rigged forex auction system, go ahead and take regulatory action. The source of manipulation of the exchange rate is you the RBZ and Finance ministry who created, and have maintained a rigged forex auction system that has plenty of room for arbitrage. Those with access to cheap forex, your elite mates, are taking advantage of the gap you created.”

Desist From Issuing Threats, Nurses Tell Govt

Nurses have urged the government to desist from issuing threats whenever they raise issues to do with remuneration and poor working conditions.

Speaking to NewsDay yesterday ahead of the International Nurses Day today, Zimbabwe Nurses Association president Enock Dongo implored the government to be sincere in wage negotiations because health workers face several challenges that threaten their livelihoods.

“The little strides are not in any way improving the odious state of the health system or the deplorable conditions of the health workers. We call upon the government to be sincere and dump the sickening penchant of shifting goalposts whenever engagements which revolve around remuneration are in motion. We sincerely urge our leaders to desist from threats, insensitivity and hypocrisy,” Dongo said.

He said the Nurses Day celebrations would be a painful reminder of their poor working conditions.

“We demand remuneration which is in tandem with, or is way above the poverty datum line. Morale has hit rock bottom in the health sector due to government insensitivity when it comes to the grievances of the health workers. There is nothing to celebrate honestly on this day.

“As we commemorate this special day for the health workers, we are in pain due to the continuing brain drain currently occurring in the sector. Specialist health workers continue to migrate from our nation to either regional or European nations in search of greener pastures. Our leadership should be alive to this sickening reality and move with speed to curb the brain drain, which is now a festering nemesis.  It should be addressed before the quality of the health system is further compromised,” he said.

Dont Be Photographed In Situations That Display Poverty, Police Officers Ordered

Senior Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers have instructed junior officers to avoid being photographed in situations that display their poverty.

In a leaked internal memo dated 7 May, police chiefs said that officers who are pictured using unconventional forms of transport would be acting irresponsibly.

This comes after police officers have been photographed while riding scotch carts and travelling in Honda fit boots. Read the memo in part:

It has come to the notice of this command that officers are taken pictures whilst commuting in scotch carts, back of trucks laden with vegetables and on top of buses whilst in police uniform. These pictures are broadcast on social media.

The memo came from “DCG Admin” – believed to refer to Deputy Commissioner General in charge of Administration, Stephen Mutamba.

He warned police officers who are pictured in such situations that they face disciplinary action. The memo read:

May this type of behaviour which is irresponsible be discouraged as it is not in keeping with good taste and propriety.

Such conduct is some form of gross indiscipline and a breach of the law. Those that will be identified will face disciplinary action.

The memo was addressed to middle-rank police officers in charge of police stations across the country.

It directed them to “lecture their officers on the proper conduct of uniformed police officers”, adding:

Commanders at all levels should take this warning seriously as it will certainly have implications on their ability to supervise their subordinates.

Zimbabwe’s police officers are poorly paid and poorly equipped and this forces them to travel in public buses and commuter omnibuses.

At times, they ride on the back of trucks or ask well-wishers for free transport to move from one place to another.

Chinotimba Stirs Controversy Over Mnangagwa Claims

Outspoken Zanu-PF legislator Joseph Chinotimba (Buhera South) has stirred controversy in the ruling party circles following a leaked video of him claiming that President Emmerson Mnangagwa was scheming to get rid of him as Member of Parliament.

Chinotimba made the remarks in a three-minute video seen by NewsDay. In the video, he is seen addressing Zanu supporters in Muchini village, ward 29, Buhera South constituency.

Chinotimba claimed that there were people who were being sent by Mnangagwa to decampaign him to ensure he does not retain the seat in the 2023 elections.

“The word of God was preached here and people were liberated… and there are people who are saying that Chinotimba should die.  I did not elect myself to this position.  It’s you who elected me and l did not impose myself to the position, what have I failed to do so that I (should) be removed (from) my position?” he said.

“I have put electricity in most areas in my constituency and I have not stopped… now Mnangagwa wants to send his people to remove me. This country was fought for by war veterans.”

Chinotimba confirmed the recording when contacted for comment yesterday, but said it was taken out of context.

“I am aware of the video and many people have called me over the video and my words have been twisted. I have told people to listen to it carefully, I want you to also listen to it,” he said.

“In the video, I was saying that there are people who are claiming to have been sent by Mnangagwa. That is what I was saying. I support my President.”

In 2018, some war veterans in Manicaland accused Chinotimba of exhibiting G40 traits.

ZACC Told To Investigate Stolen COVID-19 Funds

THE Public Accounts Committee (Pac) has called on the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) and police to investigate the abuse of US$89 million COVID-19 relief funds by government officials.

The committee also recommended a forensic audit to recover millions of dollars after tabling in Parliament on Tuesday its report on the abuse of the COVID-19 funds.

“The committee’s recommendations to the ministries and those issues referred to Zacc and Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) should be taken seriously. Generally, the committee was concerned about the laxity in maintaining records,” part the report presented by proportional representation MP Memory Mbondiah
read.

“Sadly, ministries in general could not provide ready answers to the committee’s questions. Equally disturbing is the fact that despite ministry officials’ undertakings to submit the required information within mutually agreed timeframes, this was not complied with leaving the committee with no option, but to finalise this report without the information sought.”

The committee analysed Auditor-General Mildred Chiri’s 2021 report which exposed gross irregularities and theft of COVID-19 donations.

According to the committee, the Public Service ministry failed to account for funds and resources, including COVID-19 donations such as fuel that they received.

“On whether the ministry had recovered any money out of the improper payments made through issuance of duplicate NetOne lines, the accounting officer indicated that they had not yet recovered any, but they were waiting for COVID-19 restrictions to be relaxed before sending their internal auditors,” Mbondiah said.

“The explanation from the ministry was not satisfactory… the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare should institute the process of recovering improperly paid allowances from the beneficiaries.”

COVID-19 allowances were supposed to be paid to small-to-medium enterprises and vulnerable persons including people with disabilities, the elderly and chronically ill.

Prophet Impregnates Minor

By A Correspondent- A self-styled prophet from the Johane Masowe Chishanu sect in Chirumhanzu district allegedly r_aped a 15-year-old old girl and threatened her with madness if she reported the matter.

Pepukayi Mutambu (39) from Hoto village under Chief Hama in Chirumhanzu district appeared before Mvuma magistrate Mrs Constance Mutandwa facing one count of rape.

He was not asked to plead.

Mutambu was remanded in custody to June 9 when he will be expected to bring a legal representative he requested.

It is the State case that Mutambu is a member of a village beef committee. The villagers allegedly slaughtered a cow and Mutambu offered free services of his refrigerator.

So some villagers left their meat in his fridge.

The court heard that on Valentine’s day – the complainant – name withheld to protect her identity – together with her young uncle were sent to collect some meat for supper.

Upon arrival, Mutambu allegedly sent the complainant’s uncle to his shrine with some words to the congregants who were gathered there.

The complainant allegedly entered the room where the fridge was to collect meat.

The court heard that Mutambu allegedly followed her inside, closed the door and played music on full blast and ra_ped the minor.

Mutambu then allegedly took the girl’s undergarments and threatened to use them to kill her or make her mad in the event that she dares to disclose the matter or refuse to sleep with him again.

Mutambu allegedly raped the minor three more times.

The court heard that the teenage girl fell pre_gnant.

She disclosed her ordeal to her parents and the matter was reported at Charandura Police station on March 22.

The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon Back On The Calendar

The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon returns to the sporting calendar this year, with close to 5 000 runners expected to participate at this year’s event on July 03, 2022.

Announcing the marathon this week, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe – the title sponsors of the popular marathon – said this year’s event will be held physically in the iconic resort town.

“We are delighted to announce that registration is now open for this year’s Econet Victoria Falls marathon, and to let the public know that this year’s event will be back to full capacity,” said Econet spokesperson Mr Fungai Mandiveyi early this week.

The marathon experienced a two year-haitus due to the coronavirus pandemic. But Mr Mandiveyi said his company looked forward to welcoming back both regular and new runners to this year’s marathon.

“We look forward to welcoming back familiar and new athelets to this year’s event, which will be run under the theme ‘Run the Big Three’”.

He said veteran athletes will battle it out along the ‘Elephant Route’, the full 42 kilometres (km) marathon, while the ‘Leopard Route’ will be for those participating in the 21km half marathon. The 7.5km ‘Lion Route’ will be the popular fun run, which often attracts whole families, along with some first-time runners.

“We are excited that once again there will be something for everyone at this year’s marathon; for serious and veteran atheletes as well as for family and friends out to have some fun and a healthy good time at the seventh wonder of the world,” said Mr Mandiveyi, adding that there would also be up to US25,000 worth of prizes to be won.

On race day, it is now the tradition to have Zumba dance classes and a variety of fun and entertainment for the entire family, including face painting for children.

Econet, which is a big proponent of health and wellness, has been sponsoring the Vic Falls since 2009.

The event, which started in 2006, was last held physically in 2019, when it attracted a field of over 3 500 participants from more than 40 nationalities around the world, making one of the biggest and most anticipated events on the global running calendar.

Mr Mandiveyi said he hoped the public would take advantage of the uniqueness of the Econet Victoria Falls marathon and plan now to participate.

“The event is clearly like no other from a racing point of view as no other race will take you on a route that starts by running over the Vic Fall iron bridge, through the spray and thunder of the Victoria Falls, cutting through a world heritage site, and having the chance to see big game – such as elephant and buffaloes, along the marathon route.”

He said this would be in addition to the opportunity, once in Victoria Falls, for visitors and runners to take game viewing safaris, go on boat cruises on the mighty Zambezi, do white water rafting and much more.

Mr Mandiveyi said to participate in this year’s marathon – which is also a qualifying race for this years Comrades Marathon – runners should register on www.vicfallsmarathon.com and pay using EcoCash, MasterCard or Visa Card.

For local (Zimbabwean) atheletes, the 7.5km Lion route attracts a fee of US$5, the 21km Leopard route costs US$10, while the 42km Elephant route requires US$15 for one to participate in it. Athletes from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region will pay US$5 for the Lion route, US$30 for the Leopard route and US$40 for the Elephant route.

At the same time international participants will pay US$10, US$50 and US$60 respectively for the three races.

Mesnwhile, Wild Frontiers, the Organisers of the Econet Victoria falls Marathon, called on all athletes and staff at the event to be sure to adhere to COVID-19 protocols as set out by Zimbabwe Government during the time of the event. These including social distancing (when not in active participation), the wearing of face masks, physical distancing and hand sanitising.

“We are encouraging all athletes to have been vaccinated, while those not fully vaccinated will be required to produce a negative COVID-19 test result taken 48 hours before the marathon,” the organisers said.

Registration entries to the Victoria Falls Marathon close on June 13, 2022, or earlier, if full capacity is reached before that date.

Worry Over Drop In Number Of Registered Voters

THE number of registered voters as of April 30 has dropped by 10 448 compared to the 2018 figures, a trend analysts said was disturbing.

According to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec), Zimbabwe’s total voter population currently stands at 5 685 258 compared to 5 695 706 in 2018. Females constitute 54% of the registered voters and males 46%.

Zec spokesperson Jasper Mangwana, in an interview with the NewsDay yesterday attributed the decline to the removal of deceased voters from the roll.

“Remember the commission is also removing deceased people, so many people have registered deaths with the Registrar-General’s office so that’s the other reason. Numbers increased due to COVID-19 deaths as well,” Mangwana said.

In January, Zec triggered a storm after it announced plans to remove 35 085 names of deceased voters from the votes roll, hardly two months after saying it had identified 22 000 deceased voters on the roll.

Critics accused Zec of “cooking” the figures ahead of the 2023 elections.

Recently, Zec said it registered 110 000 new voters in a voter registration blitz which ran from April 11 to 30.

The exercise was marred by widespread apathy, with civic electoral watchdogs complaining that prospective registrants did not have identity documents.

On Monday, Mangwana told delegates attending a political parties meeting hosted by 4-H Zimbabwe Foundation that Zec, resources permitting,  was contemplating another
blitz.

“We are fixing the gap as we are now approaching 2023. Voter registration has not stopped…

“What the commission will consider in the near future is to see if it can mobilise resources for another possible blitz if resources are there,” Mangwana said.

Analysts and electoral watchdogs expressed concern over voter registration apathy, saying it was caused by the relentless attacks on the credibility of Zec’s handling of elections.

“Obviously, some voters do not see the need to participate in an election which, according to opposition parties, has a predetermined outcome. Nonetheless, new voters were added but the net is still negative,” Kudzai Mutisi said.

Political analyst Kudakwashe Munemo called for an independent audit of the voters roll.

“It is very shocking considering that political parties and civil society organisations mobilised people to register to vote. There is need for an audit of the voters roll to ascertain whether the rate of people registering has been slower than the removal of the deceased, something which I thinks is incorrect,” Munemo said.

Heal Zimbabwe Trust programmes manager Edknowledge Mandikwaza said voter apathy would have a negative impact on the 2023 elections.

“Root causes to voter apathy, however, are multiple and diverse — voters are fatigued for participating in elections whose results are always contested and bring no change. They (voters) have been brutalised and see taking part in electoral politics as inviting violence and to worsen matters,” Mandikwaza said.

Zimbabwe Election Advocacy Trust’s Ignatius Sadziwa said: “Conventional voter registration methods are no longer yielding, thus we need a paradigm shift in our approaches and move in sync with international trends. There are over 1,5 million potential first-time voter registrants,” he said.

Kazembe Summoned to Parly Over Police Use of Spikes

Parliament has summoned Home affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe to explain why the police were using metal spikes to deflate “errant drivers” car tyres.

Parliament raised the issue after police threw spikes at a commuter omnibus full of passengers in Manicaland last week, resulting in the driver losing control and the vehicle overturning.

The accident claimed four lives, and left several others injured.

Harare Central legislator Murisi Zwizwai (CCC) said Kazembe should explain why the police were endangering the lives of the travelling public.

“Can the Minister of Home affairs come to this House with a ministerial statement to address the issue of the use of spikes by the police who are causing accidents on the roads?” Zwizwai said.

Responding to questions from legislators on the use of spikes, acting leader of government business in Parliament Felix Mhona said: “I have heard your plea. I will forward it to the responsible minister to come and respond. What I want to promise is that I will discuss with my fellow minister so that we make sure that the use of spikes on moving vehicles comes to an end to avoid deaths. Let me make it clear, it is not government policy to throw spikes on moving vehicles on the road.”

In 2020, the High Court ruled that the use of spikes was legal following a court challenge by the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe.

A number of lives have been lost in the recent past, while others have been left injured after police threw spikes at moving vehicles.

Traffic police are also notorious for smashing windows of vehicles of suspected traffic law offenders.

ED Has Shut Off Zimbabwe, Says CCC

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party yesterday accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa of “shutting off” the country to business through chaotic anti-economic measures.

Addressing a Press conference in Harare yesterday, CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said the cocktail of measures announced by Mnangagwa on Saturday had caused bloodbath in business corridors.

“His mantra when he got into power was ‘Zimbabwe is open for business’, but Mnangagwa has effectively closed the country for business. Most commercial actors have already warned that the lending freeze would hurt Zimbabwe’s already fragile economy,” Mahere said.

“Mnangagwa did not produce any facts or figures to justify the lending ban. This has created fresh uncertainty to the already uncertain economy.”

Mnangagwa on Saturday directed banks to stop lending, among other measures aimed at controlling the galloping exchange rate and arresting the continued fall of the local currency.

The stabilisation measures have attracted widespread criticism from business and industry, with legal experts saying they were a legal nullity.

“What Mnangagwa demonstrated is that he has no care whatsoever for the welfare of citizens. He is not in touch with the reality of commerce in Zimbabwe. What we need to solve the entirety of these problems is to ensure that we install a government that serves the people and not just a few,” Mahere said.

“The measures can be best described as an assault on trade, an assault on commerce which will obviously be felt the most by the ordinary citizen on the street.”

The outspoken opposition information tsar said through his Saturday nocturnal policies, Mnangagwa had usurped the Constitution.

“There is simply no law that allows even the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe to suspend all lending, to interfere with private contracts, to interfere with commerce to the point of hampering and halting all business activities,” Mahere said.

The Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce has also shredded Mnangagwa’s economic stabilisation measures as unworkable.

SADC Confronts Ramaphosa Over Dulula Thugs Killing Zimbabweans

By- SADC has engaged the South African government over its citizens who are killing Zimbabweans accusing them of taking their jobs

SADC said Ramaphosa must protect African citizens domiciled in South Africa against xenophobic attacks.

After paying a courtesy call on President Mnangagwa yesterday, the newly elected SADC Executive Secretary Mr Elias Magosi said, as the head of the secretariat driving programmes and policies of the 16-member bloc, he intends to ensure there is regional integration.

His call comes amid rising tensions in South Africa where foreigners have once again been under attack from South Africans in an Afrophobic wave that is code-named Operation Dudula.
Last month, a Zimbabwean Elvis Nyathi was brutally murdered by South Africans in Diepsloot in a foreboding repeat of other equally brutal and callous attacks on foreigners.
However, Mr Magosi said such actions are an anathema to the founding values of the regional bloc that was founded in August 1992.
“The idea of the founding fathers of the community was to ensure that we integrate and that we have our citizens moving freely across the region, that means they could find economic activity anywhere in the region.

“Zimbabweans could move into Botswana, and citizens of Botswana could move to Zimbabwe or anywhere in the region without fear that when working they should be looking behind their back feeling that they are insecure, so those aspects that have been in the Republic of South Africa, obviously as the secretariat and Sadc, we will be concerned about.
“We are concerned about it and we are engaged with the leadership of the Republic of South Africa for them to find solutions,” he said.
He said the region also encourages bilateral engagements between member states in the event of xenophobia, which has lately been simmering in South Africa at the instigation of Operation Dudula, which is targeting Africans in what some have described as Afrophobia.
“We encourage governments to engage at the highest level to make sure that citizens in either country are secure and that the security is not compromised. The message that I would send to those practising it, say in South Africa, is that they have citizens elsewhere and would not want their citizens in other parts of the region to be treated like that.
“There are citizens of South Africa who are enjoying peace in the other 15 member states and that is what we would want for citizens of Zimbabwe, if they go to South Africa looking for opportunities, and the South Africans must realise that these citizens that are coming are for the economic development of their country,’’ he said.

Late Minister’s Wife Battles Against Son Over Estate

The High Court has dismissed an application by the late Transport minister Biggie Matiza’s widow, Lillian, who was seeking to sideline his 34-year-old son from benefiting from his estate.

Lillian had taken her stepson, Tendai Muchando to court seeking an order compelling him to undergo DNA tests to prove that he was Matiza’s son.

Muchando claims that he is Matiza’s biological son, born to Matiza and Rosemary Muchando in 1987.

High Court judge  accused Lillian of feigning ignorance on Muchando’s paternity despite having knowledge that DNA tests were done at Matiza’s instance.

The court heard that Muchando was born on November 28, 1987. When he turned 10, blood samples were obtained from his mother and Matiza.

Probability of paternity was 99,82% and 99,85%

The judge then ruled against Lillian.

“There is clearly need for finality to the issue. There are to my mind other ways in which applicants or respondents can bring a conclusion to the dispute if so advised. In the circumstances however, I find the application unmeritorious,” the judge ruled.

“I have to point out at the outset that Lillian and her sons (cited as applicants) have not been candid to the court. In many respects they have skirted the truth or deliberately failed to elicit a number of issues raised by
Muchando.

“What I find astounding is for applicants to pretend that the results were deliberately created by Muchando. There appears to be a deliberate ploy to feign ignorance or question the origins of the DNA tests. All this is, but a façade,” the judge concluded.

Hwange Colliery Boss In Mysterious Death

By- Hwange community has been plunged into mourning following the sudden death of Hwange Colliery Company Limited (HCCL) managing director, Dr Charles Zinyemba.

He was 59.

Dr Zinyemba collapsed and died at his home in the mining town on Sunday morning and details leading to his death are still sketchy.

Announcing his death to workers in an internal memo, HCCL said: “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of our managing director Dr C Zinyemba. Dr Zinyemba passed away in the early hours of Sunday.
“Further information and funeral arrangements will be shared soon. In the meantime, the administration team joins the Zinyemba family, HCCL employees and the entire Hwange community to mourn a pillar in the company and community. May his soul rest in peace.”
A sombre atmosphere swept across Hwange yesterday as workers, business leaders and members of community paid tribute to the late HCCL managing director during a funeral service held at the Colliery Stadium.
Speaker after speaker praised Dr Zinyemba for his transformative dedication towards the company’s turnaround efforts. The company’s administrator, Mr Dale Sibanda, said Dr Zinyemba was a hard worker.
“We appointed him substantive managing director and since that appointment not one day did he disappoint. Dr Zinyemba has been with HCCL for over 10 years.
He knew and had an understanding of HCCL history,” he said.
“He understood clearly where we are now and saw clearly our vision for the future.
He was an integral part of the process to rebuild the company and provided vital guidance to the administration team.
He would use his vast knowledge to shepherd us away from retrogressive moves.”
In 2020, during a tour of Chaba Mine by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Dr Zinyemba told the President that HCCL was in a state of collapse at the start of administration in October 2018, as creditors were swooping on it through a string of litigations.
Workers had also gone for several months without pay.
Workers who spoke to Business Chronicle expressed shock over Dr Zinyemba’s death and paid tribute to his legacy.
“He was a good man who despite being a medical doctor steered the achievements that we are now experiencing at the colliery,” said Mr Wilfred Teera.
“The turnaround that is currently being experienced is because of his leadership and dedication.
He managed to bring in the equipment including boosting workers welfare.”
Another worker, Mrs Florence Mudenda, said Dr Zinyemba had workers’ wellbeing at heart.
“When the late Dr Zinyemba took the reins even in an acting capacity, changes began to be felt in the company especially amongst workers,” she said.
“One of his goals was workers’ welfare. For the first time after years, we began to get our salaries on time.
From using lorries to go to work he over a short period pushed the purchase of staff buses.”
Workers said Dr Zinyemba’s sudden death took them by surprise and said they will remember his positive impact on the business.
“His death has dealt a blow to his vision.
He was trying his best that we can’t deny,” said Mr Gerald Ndlovu, another worker.
Contacted for comment, Mines Parliamentary Portfolio Committee chairman, Edmond Mkaratigwa, said during his tenure at the helm of HCCL, Dr Zinyemba steered the colliery firm to positive growth.
“We are saddened that we have lost a mining sector veteran and cadre who proved to have been managing to steward his staff and use the available resources to change the course of the ship to positive growth and profitability from negativity and losses,” he said.
“Such leadership was key for Hwange, which required innovation and maximisation in the backdrop of climate change impacts and governance frameworks discouraging its use globally.”
Mr Mkaratigwa said Dr Zinyemba had a listening ear and mastered the art of engaging as he cooperated with key stakeholders while being open to criticism.
Dr Zinyemba was a holder of an Executive Master of Business Administration Degree from the National University of Science and Technology (Nust), MBChB from the University of Zimbabwe and was a full member of the College of Primary Care Physicians of Zimbabwe and an Associate Member of the Institute of Directors of Zimbabwe.
The late Dr Zinyemba has a background in the military where he worked as a medical doctor before being employed by the colliery as its medical services manager.
He was appointed acting managing director in 2018 following the departure of Mr Thomas Makore and the subsequent placing of the company under administration.
Dr Zinyemba was confirmed as the coal mining company’s substantive managing director last year, a position he held to his untimely death. Burial details are yet to be disclosed. Chronicle

Mthuli, Mangudya In Panic Meeting To Save Collapsing Economy

By-President Emerson Mnangagwa’s economic advisors are said to be stretching their heads trying to find new ideas for helping the failing economy.

Finance Minister Mthuli, Ncube is secretary George Guvamatanga and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor, John Mangudya is said to be holding endless meetings to discuss ways of reviving the economy.

Impeccable sources within the Finance Ministry told ZimEye.com the three have recommended the abandoning of the local currency the the US dollar.

” There is consensus among the three on the reintroduction of the US dollar but the problem is that there are no measures to bank-roll the green buck. The treasury has no Gold reserves to back up the forex should they abandon the local currency and this is the sticking point,” said the impeccable sources.

Soldiers Bash Villagers

Dozens of villagers near Jason Ziyaphapha Moyo Airbase in Chegutu were on Tuesday allegedly assaulted by soldiers reportedly searching for a machete gangster who had assaulted their collegue.

—Newsday
