Former Foreign Affairs minister Walter Mzembi has accused lawyers and judges of killing Zimbabwean politics.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Mzembi said settling electoral disputes in the courts has reduced electoral competition to pre-independence era where the judiciary was used to suppress the majority.

“Recourse to ordinary courts of law on political disputes has largely taken electoral competition to the gutters and set back our politics to colonial times , lawyers , judges kill politics , just as they would have killed the beautiful game of football if FIFA had allowed recourse to courts on football disputes unless provided in the FIFA Regulations,” said Mzembi.

Mzembi’s comment comes on the back of the Citizens Coalition for Change led by Nelson Chamisa suffering defeats at the High Court in its fight against self imposed Secretary General Sengezo Tshabangu.

Many have accused the ruling Zanu PF of abusing the courts to deal with the opposition.

Using a government-issued POLAD vehicle, Shumba, known for his connection to the nation’s elite, incited a group of youths to launch a brutal assault on unsuspecting civilians.

One patron recounted her harrowing experience, saying, “I was in the bathroom, oblivious to the chaos unfolding outside. When I came out, I was shocked to see other patrons being attacked. They ordered me to lie on the floor, and one of the attackers brutally hit my backside with an iron bar. I’m in pain and deeply traumatized by the ordeal.”

A resident speaking to ZimEye at Wenera shops expressed their shock, saying, “Mukoma wangu, ndakaona hora – Big brother, I experienced horror. One of Shumba’s thugs brutally smashed a general hand at Marimira bar with a snooker stick right in his face. I wonder how he’s coping now.”

Pretoria- A 24-year-old “conman,” Nhlanhla Sizani, successfully deceived South Africa’s Police service by impersonating a United Nations (UN) diplomat during the 2021 local government elections. Sizani appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing charges of fraud, forgery, and uttering.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations, commonly known as the Hawks, revealed that Sizani submitted a fraudulent letter adorned with the United Nations insignia, requesting the South African Police Service (SAPS) escort to polling stations under the guise of a UN ambassador/diplomat.

Colonel Katlego Mogale, spokesperson for the Hawks, stated, “Sizani misrepresented himself, managing to secure an SAPS Diplomatic Police Unit escort to various polling stations as an observer during the elections.” However, investigations by the Hawks’ Crime Against the State within the Serious Organised Crime Investigation uncovered that Sizani was neither a UN ambassador nor an official observer.

Mogale emphasized the actual financial loss suffered by SAPS due to the misrepresentation. The United Nations confirmed that they had not requested the escort, exposing the extent of the conman’s deceit.
