“Postpone Schools Opening”: Teachers

Teachers yesterday pleaded with government to consider postponing the opening of schools for the third term scheduled for next week in the wake of heightened political tensions following last week’s disputed elections.

The educators said the safety of staff and children was not guaranteed after the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change party threatened protests over the election outcome.

Schools are scheduled to open on Monday. In the past, students and teachers have been caught up in violent protests.

The opposition party said its protests were meant to force a fresh election supervised by the Southern African Development Community and the African Union.

Educators Union of Zimbabwe secretary-general, Tapedza Zhou, said the situation in the country was volatile.

“The current situation in the country is dangerously calm, with potential to explode any minute,” Zhou said.

“The safety of teachers and school kids returning to school is not guaranteed. Opening schools is only a gimmick to portray that things as back to normal yet risking the lives of learners and teachers.”

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe leader, Obert Masaraure, said opening schools under the current political environment was reckless.

We fear for the safety of both teachers and learners in the current context,” Masaraure said.

“We recommend that the opening of schools be postponed by a week to allow political tensions to diffuse.”

Yesterday, social media was awash with reports that government had deferred schools opening to September 12 in light of the  political contestations, but

Primary and Secondary Education deputy minister Edgar Moyo, dismissed the reports as false.

“It’s all lies; schools are set to open as scheduled. People are now obsessed with lies and I don’t even know where this culture came from,” he told NewsDay yesterday.

Mai Titi Hauled Back to Court

By A Correspondent- Incarcerated socialite Felistas Murata, popularly known as Mai Titi, had her case of fraud postponed after the State said the complainant in the matter failed come to court because she had just given birth.

The matter was remanded to September 29.

The comedienne is facing fraud and theft of trust property charges after she failed to repay a US$10 000 debt and for using a hired car as collateral.

In May, she applied for discharge but her application was dismissed after the court ruled that there was overwhelming evidence against her.

In the first count, it is alleged that sometime in September 2022 and at corner Sam Nujoma Street and Speke Avenue, Mai Titi misrepresented to the complainant Rachel Mhuka that she was in need of US$10 000 for her business venture and would surrender her Mercedes Benz vehicle as surety. It, however, later emerged that the car was not hers.

It is alleged Mhuka bought into the misrepresentation and gave her US$10 000.

The comedienne later retrieved the vehicle from the complainant saying it did not belong to her and went on to give her another vehicle, an Audi as surety which she later took back again exchanging it with an invalid passport.

The complainant later returned it to the socialite who gave her the Audi back.

UK Zimbabwean Slapped 15-Year Prison Sentence for Child Rape

By Farai D Hove | Coventry, UK — In a shocking and distressing case that has sent shockwaves through the community, a 43-year-old Zimbabwean man, Khumbulani Sibanda, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the heinous crime of raping a child under the age of 13. The conviction came after a trial in which Sibanda was found guilty of exploiting the innocence of a young child for his own perverse desires.

Khumbulani Sibanda

Described as a “dangerous offender” by the court, Sibanda has been ordered to serve a minimum of 10 years behind bars. The judge’s decision to impose such a substantial sentence reflects the gravity of his actions and aims to protect society from his potential future harm.

Sibanda’s crimes, which occurred between 2016 and 2018, remained hidden until January 2021, when the appalling truth came to light. The victim’s young age made it difficult for them to fully understand the extent of the abuse they endured. Sibanda’s actions have been characterized as a blatant exploitation of the child’s vulnerability and innocence for his own sickening satisfaction.

The trial was marked by the tireless efforts of Detective Constable Suzanne Leah, who worked diligently to ensure justice was served. Her dedication was evident as she expressed her satisfaction that the severity of Sibanda’s actions was duly recognized in the length of the sentence.

Beyond the prison term, Sibanda faces further repercussions. Upon his release, he will spend an additional three years on extended licence, although this could extend to eight years if he is granted release after a decade of incarceration. Furthermore, Sibanda will be placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life, underscoring the lasting impact of his crimes.

The court’s ruling, which took place at Warwick Crown Court on August 24th, also included concurrent sentences of 12 weeks each for sexual assault and exposure. This comprehensive sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the seriousness of these offenses and the imperative to shield society from individuals who pose such dangers.

Mupfumi Humiliated

MUTARE-Zanu PF Mutare Central constituency losing candidate Isau Mupfumi has raked the Mutare electorate over the coals for voting Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC) and described them as sellouts following his recent defeat.

Mupfumi got a paltry 5 010 votes against 15 628 votes for CCC candidate and former Mutare City Mayor Brian James.

He said the electorate in the constituency wants to receive handouts from Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) with a regime change agenda. He said the electorate is selling the country and forgets that their forefathers died to liberate it.

“The majority of people in Mutare Central chose to sell the country, that our forefathers and mothers fought and died for during the liberation struggle.

This country did not come on a silver platter, it was paid for in full measure and with ultimate sacrifice of blood and life but the majority have sold out for a plate of porridge because they receive from NGOs whose agenda is for regime change.

“We will open your minds and eyes so that you see their true colours. I thank everyone who voted for me.

Let’s not be discouraged by the outcome. We will continue working with you and remain supportive as always,” reads part of the message.

War Collaborators Celebrate Mnangagwa Controversial Win

THE Zimbabwe National Liberation War Collaborators Association (ZILIWACO) has congratulated President Emmerson Mnangagwa and all progressive Zimbabweans for a thunderous win in the 23 August 2023 general elections.

In a statement, the association said President Mnangagwa’s performances during the last 5 years were the reason the electorate gave him a fresh mandate.

“ZILIWACO also applauds the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission for respecting the Constitutional mandate in executing its duties. Indeed Zimbabweans have defended their hard-won independence by voting ZANU PF into power,” the association said.

It added, “It is an unfortunate scenario that there are enemies of Zimbabwe who have come out in the guise of the SADC Observer Mission and gave comments aimed at discrediting our elections that were held in a peaceful and indeed free environment. Nevers Mumba is not SADC.

His preconceived report and loose utterance echo Chamisa of CCC’s position that if his party lose then the elections are discredited.”

ZILIWACO called on SADC to “reign in individuals and ensure the likes of Nevers Mumba stick to their mandate.”

It noted that all progressive global Observer Organisations have commended Zimbabwe for holding transparent, free fair, inclusive and collective elections that saw Cde Mnangagwa of the ZANU PF party beating the opposition CCC led by Advocate Chamisa.

“ZILIWACO, in collaboration with other veterans of the liberation struggle associations, will forever defend our hard-won Independence.”

“Elections have come and gone. We urge all the peace-loving people of Zimbabwe to ignore the Western-sponsored opposition whose regime agenda is well documented.

It’s time to focus on our lives and supporting the economic developmental programmes led by our President ED Mnangagwa.”

Benza Scores A Double

Innocent Benza has set and broken his own records over the past five years.

And he is still in the same trajectory.

The reserved 51-year-old Herentals president and striker spent the first 44 years of his life outside the public eye.

Despite running the sprawling Herentals Group of Colleges and Schools, Benza only rose to prominence when he made his Premiership debut at the age of 46 following the elevation of his team in 2018.

He earned plaudits and rebuke in equal measure but he is too passionate to consider the downside of things when it comes to football.

That he plays alongside his son Tinotenda-a first in the local Premiership pushes him more.

No one before him has ever played Premiership football at the age of 46. And each year after 2018, he has been breaking the records he sets at the beginning of each term.

At 51, he is arguably the oldest professional footballer in Africa.

He also remains the oldest goal scorer in the local Premiership having fired one past Chapungu in 2019 when defying everything including the second season syndrome.

And last week, he became the first footballer in this country to be a parliamentary.

Benza contested for the Mutasa Central Constituency in the harmonised elections held last Wednesday and he came out tops.

Three days later, he was leading The Students in their match-day 20 fixture against Manica Diamonds at Gibbo.

Herentals failed to spice their proprietor’s celebrations after settling for just a point against a team chasing for the championship.

Benza played for 45 minutes in that game with players from both sides saluting him after playing his first match as a parliamentarian elect.

“It gives me great joy and pride to have had what’s in my plate right now,” Benza said.

“It has been my dream to be a parliamentarian one day. I am very humbled for seeing it through.

“I would like to salute people in Mutasa Central Constituency for voting for me. I can’t thank them enough.

“And on Sunday, I was very humbled to see Herentals and Manica Diamonds players congratulating me during our league match. We would have wanted to win that game but a draw wasn’t that bad after all”.

Benza, who bankrolls the Premiership team, Herentals Queens, Herentals U20 in the first division and Herentals D2 sides has also established another Division 2 based in his constituency.

Perhaps it is this selflessness that won him the hearts of people in Mutasa Central.

“I don’t really expect rewards when I do things. I love sport and draw a lot of joy seeing people enjoying themselves playing sport,” Benza said.

“We have several professional teams and we have also established academies for different sport codes at our schools and colleges.

“My hope is to see sport growing so much that Zimbabwe becomes a powerhouse in more than just one sport code.

“I believe that sport is a very big industry that can employ hundreds of thousands if not millions of people if run well.

“I am going to give sport a voice in parliament and hopefully things will move the way sport stakeholders want to see them moving”.

Benza said he is not going to hang up his playing boots as yet.

“I have said this before. I am going to play football for as long as my legs can carry me. I love this game so much and I train every day to condition my body for this game.

“I am not resting as yet. I am enjoying the game now more than ever before. Football is something I grew up playing and I am still in the game”.

Benza, who is also an academic has provided four assists this season.-Soccer24 News

Normalisation Committee Useless

The Normalisation Committee took office exactly 50 days ago, following FIFA’s decision to lift the suspension on Zimbabwe, to the delight of football stakeholders in the country.

The five-member Committee was appointed by the world governing body to run the affairs of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) until July next year.

The The committee was tasked with restructuring the ZIFA administration, reviewing the troubled association’s statutes and electoral code to ensure compliance with FIFA statutes, to act as an electoral committee in order to organise and conduct new board elections, as well as ensuring proper financial handover.

Initially, the committee had four members —chairman Lincon Mutasa, former Highlanders defender Sikhumbuzo Ndebele, former Mighty Warriors coach Rosemary Mugadza, and legal practitioner Nyasha Sanyamandwe.

FIFA then beefed it up by adding chattered accountant Cynthia Malaba, who assumed the role of vice chairperson.

The first thing done by the committee was to appoint a new referees’ committee —headed by former match official Norman Matemera.

Faith Sibanda was ropped in as Matemera’s deputy, while Stella Ruvinga, Kuda Rusina and Tendai Bwanya assumed the role of committee members.

A good start by the Mutasa-led Normalisation Committee, some felt, based on how scandalous match officiating has become in Zimbabwe, especially in the Csstle Lager Premier Soccer League.

While the committee can operate anyhow it pleases, the snail pace at which it has been preparing for the Warriors’ return to international football, is worrying to say the least.

The country’s senior men’s national soccer team is scheduled to take part in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers between September 22-24.

The Normalisation Committee advertised positions for all national teams coaches and promised the nation that a technical committee will be appointed to choose the successful candidates.

The committee made a mess of the adverts and appeared to be unknowledgable of CAF requirements as far as the appointment of coaches for national teams is concerned.

According to the continental governing body, only holders of the the CAF A and UEFA Pro Licence qualify to coach national teams, but the Normalisation Committee listed UEFA A as qualification for interested candidates, meaning it can hire a coach who may end up not sitting on the bench.

But that is now water under the bridge, what’s more important is that an advert was flighted and there has been an encouraging response.

“We want to have a database of all applicants so that we can let the Technical Committee to choose the best candidate, we have more than 200 applicants,” said Mutasa earlier this month.

Less than a month before the CHAN qualifiers though, no Warriors coach has been appointed.

In fact, even the Technical Committee has not been appointed.

When Mutasa was sought for a comment last week, he said the Normalisation Committee will appoint a new coach for the Warriors in two weeks time.

Simply put, whorever is appointed Warriors coach will have less than 10 days to assemble a team and prepare for the CHAN qualifiers.

Moreover, since it took office 50 days, the Normalisation Committee has never had a media briefing to provide updates on its activities or clarify its mandate.

Will the committee fulfill all its duties? Only time will tell.-Soccer24 News

Zanu PF Speaks On Fresh Elections

ZIYAMBI ZIYAMBI

By-Zanu PF has rejected to accept calls by the main opposition CCC for fresh polls.

The ruling party said it would not give away its unassailable electoral victory in the just-ended harmonised elections as Zimbabwe’s Constitution does not provide for a re-run of elections at the behest of a losing political party or candidate, let alone an international organisation.

Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi said the law was clear on the legal remedies available to an aggrieved political party or candidate and an opposition party-induced electoral re-run is not one of them.
Minister Ziyambi said this yesterday while responding to calls from the opposition CCC that there must be a re-run of the presidential election supervised by Sadc, the African Union and United Nations among other organisations.
President Mnangagwa, who was Zanu PF presidential candidate, was declared winner on Saturday night after he beat his closest rival, CCC presidential candidate, Mr Nelson Chamisa, who has typically refused to accept the result claiming that the election was rigged without providing any evidence.
The opposition party has also made another bizarre claim where they want the disbandment of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec), the body in charge of electoral processes, saying it should surrender its electoral management role to Sadc and the UN.
Sadc Election Observer Mission chairperson, Dr Nevers Mumba, has also come under fire for straying into areas that are beyond the mandate of the Mission by interrogating legislation that was passed by the country’s Parliament in exercise of its sovereign and constitutional obligations.
In an interview, Minister Ziyambi said the claims by CCC and its cohorts were ridiculous as they are coming from sore losers.
“Section 93 (1) of the Constitution is clear about what an aggrieved person must do. They must file a petition within seven (7) days of declaration of winner by ZEC. Our Constitution is also clear that we hold an election once every 5 years. That has been done. There is no provision for another election as demanded by CCC,” said Minister Ziyambi.
“Section 93 (3) requires the Constitutional Court to hear and determine the petition within 14 days. The decision of the court shall be final. There is no reason for His Excellency, President Mnangagwa and ZANU PF to give away their win. If anything, Zimbabwe as a sovereign State cannot be pressurised to change its Constitution or domestic laws by a regional or international observer mission or SADC itself or the European Union.”
He said one other argument being advanced by CCC of irregularities was not valid and will not pass any legal test.
“Any lawyer knows that the irregularity argument will not wash. There are many cases in that regard. No election is 100 percent perfect. The test is one of substantial compliance. Even Dr Mumba in his preliminary report accepted that the electoral environment was calm and peaceful, but some aspects fell short of the requirements or expectations of the Constitution and SADC Guidelines.
“The classic case is (ironically) to be found in the US ie Al Gore v George Bush. Remember the electoral fiasco in Florida. But were the elections annulled? No,” said Minister Ziyambi.
“So we do not have a provision in our laws to have the UN, AU or SADC to come and conduct elections in Zimbabwe.”
Meanwhile, the Council of Apostolic Churches of Zimbabwe has added their voice in congratulating President Mnangagwa and Zanu PF for the electoral victory.
CACZ president, Bishop Clement Karikoga Chisango, said the victory was a result of President Mnangagwa’s tried and tested leadership whose life changing developmental projects have transformed communities.
“We wish you and your party, Zanu PF, a developmental, successful and progressive five-year mandate bestowed upon you by the people of Zimbabwe in accordance with the Constitution of Zimbabwe,” said Bishop Chisango, whose organisation is an umbrella body of indigenous Apostolic and Zion Christian churches.
Bishop Chisango commended President Mnangagwa’s efforts to create working synergies with the church in the country, saying such initiatives showed that he was a God fearing leader. Herald

According to Assistant Inspector Paul Nyathi, the accident occurred when a Honda Fit vehicle collided head-on with a VW Toures at the 60 km peg. He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police announces names of eight (08) victims who died in fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 60 km peg along Harare-Mutate Road on August 30 2023 when a Honda Fit vehicle collided head-on with a VW Toures.

The victims were positively identified as follows:-

  • Walter MARIMO, male adult, 19 years old
  • Watch SILAS, male, 36 years old
  • Gatawa SHADRECK, male, 46 years old
  • 5ongore MASIYIWA, male, 50 years old
  • Desmond MAKOSO, male, 28 years old
  • Kenneth MABWE, male, 29 years old
  • Andress GONDOLOSI, female adult, 29 years old
  • Devine WATCH, male juvenile, 8 years old

The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, avoid speeding and overtaking when it is not safe to do so.

According to the ZRP’s preliminary statement, the Honda Fit vehicle was carrying eight passengers while the other vehicle had one passenger. Some individuals on social media have criticized the police, blaming them for the accident and alleging that they overlook illegal public transportation vehicles known as “Mshika shika.” They find it unacceptable that the Honda Fit, designed for up to five passengers, was carrying eight individuals. They suspect that the vehicle may have passed multiple police checkpoints through alleged briber.

Benza First Parliamentarian To Play Professional Football

Environmental Impact Assessment Matter Of Fact

Environmental impact assessment

In response to a misprint where we said EIAs or Environmental impact assessment is done by Ministry of Mines instead of the Environmental Management Agency consultant, we will briefly outline the process and requirements.

For the record, EIA
is done by EMA through registered agents.

Inorder to get an EIA certificate that outlines how you will manage the environment where you conduct your project to satisfaction of EMA requirements you must follow the following requirements.

You must have a registered mine with work approved by the Ministry of Mines . From there you choose a consultant qualified to do so approved by the ministry of mines who understands the laws of the country especially to do with Environmental management.

When he/she starts the process, she calculates the total project cost and send to EMA for billing then they will charge you a small percentage for you to proceed with your consultations .

Then there is consultation phase where you consult in writing key stakeholders depending on location but the following are there everywhere in the country
1 District administration
2 Rural district council and
3 ZINWA
4 Forestry commission
5 Agritex
6 ZRP
7 local communities x 15
These above stakeholders have their own requirements inorder to fill the form given to them and comment .

After these consultations have been a book is compiled and submitted to EMA for proper assessment before it is approved if meets the standard of Environmental management then a certificate will be issued giving permission to proceed with the intended project.

However as you continue more licensing is required depending on activities you are carrying out .

For your EIAs we have a consultant who does at affordable prices compared to the rest of consultants across the country as low as 1000usd depending on project specifications.

Water Woes Haunt Harare

By A Correspondent- Harare risks another cholera outbreak as the water situation in the capital has reached crisis levels with many suburbs going for over a week without supplies.

This year, the cholera outbreak was first reported in Chegutu in February before it spread across the country.

Harare has recorded 1 616 suspected cases to date. Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) director, Reuben Akili, expressed concern over water challenges in the city.

“In our view, the issue of water crisis which is happening when we are getting into the hot season which is characterised by water challenges and waterborne diseases is worrisome,” Akili said.

Community Water Alliance director Hardlife Mudzingwa accused the authorities of failing to eradicate cholera.

“Despite cholera cases in Harare, the priority of the government from national tier to lowest tier (local authority) has been on treating symptoms of the problem rather than addressing the root cause,” Mudzingwa said.

Harare Residents Trust (HRT) director, Precious Shumba, said the local authority had failed the residents.

“Primitive disease outbreaks will be with us for a long time as long as the attitude and level of service delivery remains as it is. We fear that the approaching rainy season will worsen the situation for residents,” Shumba said.

Rudo Chikodzore, the director for epidemiology and disease control in the Health and Child Care ministry, said they had a strategy to save lives.

“This has been successful in Harare province as seen by a low case fatality rate of 0,4% for the metropolitan province despite a high number of cholera cases in the just ended cholera outbreak,” she said.-Newsday

“No Changes on Schools Opening Date”: Gvt

THE Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has dispelled social media rumours that schools will reopen on September 12.

Instead, schools will open, as indicated, on September 4.

Social media platforms have been spreading rumours that the dates have been changed.

The Deputy Director of Communications in the Ministry, Patrick Zumbo, said there were no changes to the calendar.

There are no changes and schools are opening on the 4th of September and will close on December 1 as initially planned,” he said.

Analysts Pour Cold Water On Election Fresh Elections

Analysts say the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) stands little chance of having its demands for fresh elections endorsed by the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) and the African Union (AU) .

President Emmerson Mnangagwa was declared winner of last week’s controversial polls which the CCC has described as flawed.

The CCC and other election observers have poked holes on the whole election architecture.

The CCC has hinted at challenging the results in court, while also pushing Sadc and AU to order a rerun.

CCC deputy spokesperson Gift Siziba told journalists early this week that the Nelson Chamisa-led opposition party was lobbying for Sadc and AU’s intervention.

Professor of world politics at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, Stephen Chan, said there was little room for having elections supervised by a foreign body.

“It seems the strategy is to call upon Sadc and the AU to support this call. This may not be successful,” Chan said.

“Observer reports are one thing, repudiating a government, even one in place by tainted means, is something else.

“Sadc will say try the courts first, but the courts, in like ruling against the CCC, will simply validate the government, further reinforcing the Sadc/AU reluctance actually to intervene.”

The CCC has in the past called for Sadc, AU and United Nations (UN)-supervised polls, without success.

Local political analyst Rashweat Mukundu said the opposition demands might never see the light of day.

“I think it’s a bold statement by CCC that Zimbabwe needs a fresh election managed by a neutral body, it could be Sadc or the AU. Of course, the question then is: will that be accepted moreso in light of what the Constitution says?,” Mukundu said.

“The key question is: what happens to the Constitution of Zimbabwe in terms of the management of elections which essentially puts the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) in that position and role?

“Even if the call for fresh elections does not happen, the CCC still needs to defend and protect its current gains and still push for political dialogue on reforming institutions that are responsible for elections.”

Another political analyst Effie Ncube, however, urged the opposition to explore all avenues.

“There is no silver bullet in this tragedy. Therefore, every avenue must be tried to resolve a potentially explosive situation,” Ncube said.

“There are a range of tools and strategies out there that can be used to deliver a better outcome from the dispute around the election results.

“That the CCC has picked one of these does not mean that others should be discarded. Instead, the situation may actually require a combination of strategies and the wise use of local and international platforms.”

Tragic Accident Claims 7

A horrific accident occurred yesterday morning on the 60-kilometre peg near Marondera along the busy Harare-Mutare Highway. A pirate taxi travelling towards Harare collided head-on with an oncoming VW Touareg vehicle.

Tragically, seven people were killed instantly at the scene of the crash, while four others suffered serious injuries. The pirate taxi, a small Honda Fit, was carrying nine passengers total including the driver.

When reporters arrived, some of the victims’ bodies remained trapped within the wreckage. Bottles of an illicit alcoholic beverage were scattered all over the roadway as well.

According to a preliminary police report, it appears the pirate taxi crossed over into the opposing traffic lane, resulting in the fatal high-speed collision. The area has been declared an official accident black spot by Mashonaland East provincial police.

An eyewitness, local vendor Mary Gomba, stated that the Honda Fit seemed to be speeding shortly before the accident occurred. Further investigation is ongoing to determine the exact causes of the crash and if excessive speed was a contributing factor.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder that unregulated transport can endanger lives. Stricter enforcement of traffic laws is needed to curb dangerous driving behaviours and prevent more loss of life on Zimbabwe’s roads. The community’s thoughts are with the families of all involved in this devastating accident.

Prophet Nabbed Having Lula Lula With Another Woman in His Car

A woman from Dzivaresekwa says she caught her husbɑnd, who is a self-styled prophet, hɑving ƨǝx with another womɑn in his car.

The husband, said Sarafina Makota, apologised for his shameless deeds.

She revealed this at the Harare Civil Court yesterday in a case in which she was being accused of inflicting emotional and verbal abuse on Rebecca Sanali.

The protection order, demanded by Sanali, was dismissed because of lack of evidence.

Sarafina told the court that Rebecca was mocking her for being barren and seduced her husbɑnd to beɑr him a child.

I cɑught her hɑving ƨǝx with my husbɑnd in his car and she admitted to the ɑffɑir,” she said.

“My husbɑnd apologised, he even broke his old sim card to avoid her but she keeps begging my 26-year-old husband to impregnɑte her because I can’t have kids and she is in her late 30s.”

Sarafina claimed she was not in a relɑtionship with Rebecca’s husbɑnd, who is a self-styled prophet.

“Ndiri Madzimai and her husband anondishandira so she saw me with him and assumed that we were having an ɑffɑir.

“Whenever we meet in the neighbourhood, she insults me and she even approached my relatives insulting them and demanding my pɑnties to bewitch me.”

Sarafina denied the allegations saying Rebecca was pulling off stunts to snɑtch her husbɑnd.

Magistrate Sharon Mashavira dismissed the application.

“The applicant (Rebbecca) failed to submit evidence of abuse and the court was left to speculate, she managed to make bold accusations without evidence,” she said.

LEAD President Linda Masarira Proposes Power sharing arrangement

30 August 2023

By Linda Tsungirirai Masarira

As a political party that was involved in the Zimbabwean 2023 elections LEAD propose that since the elections stand disputed the only wayforwad is an all inclusive power-sharing arrangement.

The LEAD proposed Power-sharing arrangement aims to reduce the risk of continued political polarisation and possibility of civil conflict by guaranteeing all political parties and civil societies a role in the Zimbabwean government, directly or indirectly, thus lessening the stakes of political contestation.

In this way, the proposed power-sharing will reduce the risk that spoilers will resort to violence if they do not succeed in the process of democratic electoral contestation. While power-sharing can reduce the incentive of electoral losers to renege on their commitment to democracy, we argue that this depends on the nature of the relevant groups, as well as on the political institutions that will be chosen.

LEAD believes that, elections have three main functions in a democracy. First, they are means of choosing the people’s representatives to a legislature, senate, and local authority or to a single office such as the presidency.

Second, elections are not just a means of choosing representatives but also of choosing governments. Indeed, in many established democracies, elections are primarily a contest between competing political parties to see who will control the government. Finally, elections are a means of conferring legitimacy on the political system.

When, at the end of the electoral process there is no notional consensus to the effect that the process has managed to serve it purpose the logical thing is to enter into a power sharing arrangement while setting up conditions and institutions for a better electoral showing.

As a nation, we have to understand that there is always the overarching issue of under what circumstances elections can help to build a new democratic order in Zimbabwe, and under what circumstances they can undermine democracy and pave the way for a return to polarisation and political violence.

The high expectations, Zimbabweans often put on elections tend to be accompanied by a weakness in the preconditions for their success. As a polarised society, Zimbabwe lacks the political climate, social and economic stability, institutional infrastructure, and political will to mount successful elections.

The international community is not helping Zimbabwe, by not being sufficiently cognizant of the dangers in pushing for elections, without paying sufficient attention to the capacity and environment of the country to carry them out.

LEAD, as a party, observed that the 2023 elections in Zimbabwe were conducted in a constrained political atmosphere and generally lacked the requisite independence and transparency as provisioned by our national constitution and international guidelines for the conduct of elections.

As a country we, during the period 2018 – 2023 we failed to put in place the necessary electoral reforms and instead adopted legislation targeting the country’s vibrant civil society, effectively muzzling productive voices of reason.

While the constitution safeguards fundamental human rights and freedoms there is in place legislation which unduly limits the rights and freedoms of citizens.

LEAD also observed that on Election Day, the voting process ran smoothly at most polling stations; however, in some areas polling stations opened late. This tactically excluded and disenfranchised a number of citizens who had wanted to cast their ballot.

As reported by ZEC, about 2000 000 Zimbabweans failed to cast their votes partly due to the delays encountered on voting day. LEAD also holds that the administration of electoral process as a whole generally lacked transparency and precision in key areas, as the ZEC did not provide critical information during various stages of the process, which LEAD believes undermines public and stakeholder confidence in its management of electoral processes.

Although the voter roll was posted for inspection, public confidence in it remained low because of inaccuracies and errors.

LEAD also noted that only the ruling party managed to submit party lists and candidates for every constituency and ward election, and ran uncontested in around 10% of wards.

This was mainly because ZEC did not induct the political parties on what is required and had not provisioned a method of payment which was acceptable to it based on the current banking systems in the country.  Also, while incidents of political violence were fewer than in 2018, tensions and polarization increased in the months preceding the elections.

In light of the aforesaid, the LEAD party holds that despite their essential role, elections in Zimbabwe have always been a source of tension, causing a lightning-rod for popular discontent and extremist sentiments.

Zimbabwean Elections, the 2023 elections included, often as a hindrance to development as they leave the country highly polarised creating an electioneering atmosphere that last until the next election. Instead of focusing on development, citizens, civic organisations, political parties and even captains of industries focus rather on preparing for the forthcoming election and surviving the obtaining political turbulence.

Zimbabwean elections have always had the perverse effect of undermining the broader process of democratization. A common mistake which we have always made is to hold elections too soon, before national political issues have progressed beyond the concerns of the previous election, and before more normal politics have had time to develop. In our situation, elections have always become a focus for violence, as the major political continue their conflict via the electoral process.

While elections are an essential part of our democracy, ill-timed, badly-designed or poorly-run elections have often served to undermine democratic processes in fragile political environments.

Given this dilemma, LEAD identifies the following issues facing the Zimbabwean community as it engages in post 2023 election peace building. There are at least five main areas of variation which have a crucial influence on the shape of post-election politics in Zimbabwe:

  • First, there is the question of election timing: should the next national elections be held in 2028 as provisioned by the constitution. Or is it better to wait for a 10 year period so as to allow the political routines and issues or internal politics to come to maturity?
  • Second is the matter of political reforms. Is it possible to have political reforms in a heavily polarised political environment? Or is it better to form an all inclusive government of national unity to preside over the processes of national healing and the realignment of national laws to the constitution.
  • Third, there are the mechanics of elections themselves: what laws governs the political environment and the running of elections. Who runs the elections? How are voters enrolled? How are electoral boundaries demarcated? What electoral formula is used? And so on. All of these decisions impact upon the way national politics develop, particularly the type of party constellations that are formed and the kind of appeals they make to voters and thus to the nature of electoral campaigning.
  • Fourth, there is the matter of international election observation, monitoring and supervision. After placing huge resources on international electoral observation, there is now a renewed focus amongst international actors such as the African Union on the need to professionalize the process of electoral observation and to place more emphasis on building domestic capacity in this area.
  • Fifth, there is the often under-estimated issue of the effect of elections on the development of civil society and political parties. In the Zimbabwean situations, many civil society organisations are weak or non-existent. In such cases, political parties are the key link between masses and elites, and play an absolutely crucial role in building a sustainable democratic polity. Hence, the interaction between civil society, political parties and the electoral process is itself crucial. The aim should be to promote the development of broad, programmatic party organizations with real links to the community.

As LEAD we understand that conclusions about the potential for peace via power-sharing, after elections, are mixed. For some, power-sharing does little to overcome the commitment problem characterizing a transition from election dispute, while others argue that such concessions provide signals of parties’ willingness to incur costs.

As LEAD we, argue that government parties tend to hold an electoral and military advantage, which heightens incentives for contending political leaders to abandon peaceful engagement. The only way to even the play field is to onto an election sabbatical based on a nationally agreed power sharing deal.

It is a glaring truth that, the Zimbabwean economy, once the continent’s bread basket and second in strength after South Africa’s, has been sharply constricting since 1999 as a result of political mudslinging and polarisation.

The three-decade-long political turmoil has brought growing economic isolation, economic sanctions, incoherent economic policies, widespread corruption, a total breakdown of social services and grave human rights abuses.

Today, foreign currencies are legal tender in Zimbabwe, with 90 % of transactions being made in US dollars. The economic situation remains desperate. Among other things, it is characterised by:

  • an exceedingly high unemployment rate: caused by a shrinking manufacturing sector and the collapse of employment in agriculture;
    • Poverty: majority of the population live in poverty whilst 49% of the population leaves in abject poverty and over a million persons are facing food and nutrition insecurity.
    • Untenable public spending: central government expenditure accounts for 30 % of GDP, with a huge deficit of GDP. Public servants’ salaries represent 90 % of the budget.
    • Debt distress: high public debt reached 86 % of GDP in March 2018, including a 7.7 billion publicly guaranteed external debt.
    • being Africa’s largest shadow economy: more than 75 % of Zimbabwe’s economy is informal, which has a negative impact on state revenue;
    • Liquidity crisis: the cash-to-deposit ratio dropped from 35 % in 2003 to 5 % in 2017.

It is a fact that the Zimbabwean political environment is charactersied by political and electoral violence. Political actors in Zimbabwe resort to coercion as an instrument to advance their interest or achieve specific political ends through such actions as violence against people, property or the electoral process before, during or after elections.

We know that Elections in themselves do not generate violence, however, in the case of Zimbabwe one can allude to the fragility of the state and societies coupled with the deep seated political rivalries, poor economic conditions that reduce electoral processes to avenues for settling differences.

Dissatisfied political leaders and/or their supporters often resort to violent protests, destruction of properties, injuring and at times killing perceived political opponents as means of expressing their dissatisfactions with the outcomes of electoral processes. Interestingly, in Zimbabwe, the outcomes of elections are often considered to have been rigged or manipulated in favour of a political party or candidate, usually the incumbent party.

Several factors have been advanced as possible triggers of electoral violence, in general, and post-elections violence, in particular. These include structural weakness in election management; the nature of the electoral system (that is, the winner-takes-all); abuse of incumbency (access to state resources, manipulation of electoral rules); identity politics; security forces‟ intimidations and brutalities during elections; and deficiencies in election observation, monitoring and reporting.

The introduction of power sharing has the potential of preventing the escalation of party based conflicts. The signing of the power-sharing agreement and its subsequent approval by the country’s legislature and implementation has to contribute in reducing the violence that may engulf the country after the elections.

The question however is, what needs to be done to sustain the peace? We believe that power sharing has conflict-mitigating effects especially when parties to the disputes arrive at such an agreement through a process of negotiation and reciprocity that all parties perceive as fair and just given their own changing interest and needs.

Power-sharing governments as a post-election conflict management mechanism will serve as a viable alternative to violence following electoral disputes. For instance, a Coalition Government’s primary duty may to address the cause of the recurrent election violence in Zimbabwe through the implementation of a coherent and far reaching reform agenda with the view of promoting a lasting peace in the country. The subsequent Parliament has also to pass a number of legislations to further the cause for peace in the country.

The adoption of power-sharing may also lead to a reduction of protests by the opposition parties and their supporters. It may also minimize perceived and real government repression and the flagrant abuse of human rights by state security apparatuses.

Power-sharing will thus presents Zimbabweans with a rare chance to salvage the hitherto seemingly implacable socio-economic and political conflicts. It also presents a true national cooperation following the abrasive relationship that exists between Zanu PF and the opposition parties.

The subsequent government will mark an end to the liberation ethos that has dominated the country’s politics for the better part of the last century. From its inception, Zimbabweans could perhaps hope for an end to the political tensions that has engulfed the country for decades.

There is also the urgent need to fix the dilapidated social infrastructures, and hyperinflation, as well as to lift the international sanctions imposed on the country if the ordinary citizens are to benefit from the peace dividend.

ZANU-PF and its apparatus should not continue to have a firm grip on power, and, the acceptance of the power sharing deal should not only be a ploy to get out of the economic crises, and removal of international sanctions.

The proposed power-sharing should focused on including those groups most capable of destabilizing the political and social order through conflict, in the heart of government. The political power-sharing arrangement has to provide important security guarantees for state and opposition parties, by offering them a place in government.

Bravo SADC

CCC Namibia applauds SADC, AU, and EU for exhibiting objectivity during the polls!

29 August 2023

Citizens in Namibia are impressed by the objectivity evident in the preliminary report from SADC and the African Union. For the first time since time immemorial, regional and continental institutions have denied endorsing sham elections conducted by the captured Zec. The people of Zimbabwe urge SADC to continue promoting democracy in the motherland.

The regional body has been popular for its subjectivity and bias toward the so-called revolutionary parties regardless of the unfair political playing field, before, during, and after elections in Zimbabwe but this time around they came back transfigured. SADC condemns the unconstitutional conduct by Zec and ZANU-PF during the poll. It is on public record that the ZANU PF-controlled Zec refused to avail the voter’s roll on time as enshrined in the Constitution and the Electoral Act read together. We are exhilarated as a people to have a transformed regional body that considers the SADC guidelines on elections and democracy during their objective observation.

What perturbs citizens in Namibia is that some African leaders in the SADC region have already congratulated someone who is trying to subvert the will of the people in Zimbabwe. Regional leaders should unite against dictatorship in Southern Africa and beyond. Zimbabweans are scattered around the world, especially in South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana and Namibia. It is now imperative to advocate for free, fair, credible, and unfettered elections in SADC. Citizens Coalition for Change Namibia respects and lauds the transformation of SADC.

Dissimilar to the previously signed and endorsed shambolic elections by the regional body, the 2023 harmonized watershed elections resemble an election that is marred with irregularities. From the late provision of a voters roll in pdf, pre-election torture, arbitrary arrests, banning, and disruption of political rallies cleared by the police, the abuse of traditional leaders, and the illegal imprisonment of Job Sikhala, etc. We demand free and fair elections in Zimbabwe. “Citizens voted for President Advocate Nelson Chamisa despite all odds”, echoed Lawrence Chiduku who defended the vote in Hwange West Constituency where he voted for the change that delivers.

The gesture of the organic regional body was also applauded by Elisha Chambara, the CCC Namibia interim chair, and the popular cadre Tapiwa “Tapshinda” Mugore who braved the terror in Uzumba before, during, and after, collecting V11s. It is significant to note that CCC has been in partnership with Uzumba since 2021, preparing for the flawed harmonized elections. Representatives from Namibia embraced participatory democracy to ensure that there was no ballot stuffing in those areas purported to be ZANU PF strongholds. That is why we managed to avert the breastfeeding of the ballot in Uzumba.

We shall continue to give applause to SADC and the African Union for condemning the shambolic elections dominated by FAZ. “Intimidation affected the voting patterns in the countryside while Harare, Bulawayo, and Manicaland were denied ballot papers from the morning forcing elections to spill into the 24th of August,” said Simbarashe Ndoda. This is a record in the history of elections in the motherland since 1980. Thank you, SADC and AU for condemning a demonic patriotic bill and delimitation process effected to close the democratic space ahead of the 23rd of August elections.

Citizens in Namibia are on the same plate of opinion as all progressive Zimbabweans who reject the shambolic and rigged elections. We are tired of disputed elections and successive illegitimate leaders in the motherland. Only a credible poll can save the people of Zimbabwe from the gross abuse of human rights, abject poverty, corruption, and looting. An economically and politically stable Zimbabwe is a blessing to the entire SADC and beyond that, it is fundamental to unite now!

CCC Applauds SADC

Is Normalisation Committee Working At All?

Zim Football Remains In Doldrums

The Normalisation Committee took office exactly 50 days ago, following FIFA’s decision to lift the suspension on Zimbabwe, to the delight of football stakeholders in the country.

Torro Trial: Lawyer Questions Accuser’s Silence

By A Correspondent| The trial of socialite Charles Guvamatanga popularly known as Torro in music circles continued on Wednesday with his lawyers taking his accuser to task to explain discrepancies in her testimony.

Torro is alleged to have raped a relative, allegations he vehemently denied when his trial opened on Tuesday describing the allegations as a fabrication and an unbelievable creation.

The lawyers also questioned her alleged silence during the alleged rape describing it as suspicious for a virgin not to make noise while being violated.

This is after the girl told the court that she was a virgin when the alleged sexual act occured and never screamed or made noise during the act which lasted approximately 15 minutes.

It is the defence’s argument that no virgin girl could be deflowered and remain silent especially under rape circumstances and then not tell the police that she had lost her virginity.

Reports are that she then made a call to her sister who was sleeping in another room five meters away from the alleged crime scene which also became a subject for questioning.

The lawyers asked why she could not walk to her sisters than getting off her bed and locking the door before making a call stating this fit into their defence that she made the call to counter Torro who had threatened reporting her to her sisters after she stormed into his room naked and demanding sexual intercourse.

It is also their argument that the accusers testimony is riddled with inconsistencies stating that what she told the police, her sisters, her nurse and the court was contradicting.

They pointed out that when she was giving her testimony, she stated that she called her sister and told her about the act on the phone but before the court she stated that she called her sister and narrated her alleged ordeal in person.

The defence also stated that her sisters’ statements also exonerated Torro as they gave statements to the effect that they went to the said room of crime in search of clues but could not find anything to suggest something had happened.

Torro insists the girl’s whole story is false and unbelievable.

“For example, why would she not scream when she allegedly saw that accused was about to rape her or even during the alleged rape or soon after since she knew her sisters were in the lounge just about 6m away.

“It is also curious why the tight-fitting clothing that the complainant was in did not show any signs of force and that when the complainant’s sisters inspected the alleged crime scene there was no evidence consistent with the allegations. These are poorly choreographed rape allegations by someone desperate to save face and embarrassed,” his lawyers submitted.

Linda Masarira Calls for All-Inclusive Power-Sharing to Address Zimbabwe’s Electoral Dispute

HARARE – In a press statement released today, Linda Tsungirirai Masarira, the President of the political party LEAD, proposed an all-inclusive power-sharing arrangement as the way forward for Zimbabwe in light of the disputed 2023 elections.

Masarira emphasized the need to reduce political polarization, prevent civil conflict, and ensure the participation of all political parties and civil societies in the government.

“As a political party that was involved in the Zimbabwean 2023 elections LEAD propose that since the elections stand disputed the only way forward is an all inclusive power-sharing arrangement.

“The LEAD proposed Power-sharing arrangement aims to reduce the risk of continued political polarization and possibility of civil conflict by guaranteeing all political parties and civil societies a role in the Zimbabwean government, directly or indirectly, thus lessening the stakes of political contestation.

According to Masarira, the contested elections have left the country in a state of uncertainty and risk of further conflict with only a power-sharing arrangement able to mitigate these risks by granting representation to various political stakeholders, thereby reducing the intensity of political competition,” said Masarira.

Masarira underscored the multifaceted role of elections in a democracy. She noted that elections not only determine representatives but also form governments and confer legitimacy on the political system.

LEAD President argued for a power-sharing agreement that lays the groundwork for better electoral practices and conditions.

Masarira pointed out that Zimbabwe’s history of post-election violence and polarized politics necessitates a new approach.

She expressed concerns over the premature holding of elections without addressing underlying issues and highlighted the need for comprehensive electoral reforms.

Power-sharing, in her view, could provide a crucial opportunity for national healing and realigning laws to the constitution.

Kikwete and Panel of Elders “to peruse” Mumba’s damning report. Gene is out, don’t even dare try putting it back

Dr Nevers Mumba and his SADC Elections Observer Mission (SEOM) team’s preliminary report condemning Zimbabwe’s 2023 elections as flawed and illegal has caused such a storm Zanu PF and SADC itself are at sixes and sevens as what to do. They have roped in the Panel of Elders led by former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete to help find a way out.

“The government said Dr Mumba failed to declare his interest when he assumed his role as the head of the election observer mission and his personal interests were seen in the preliminary report,” reported Bulawayo 24.

“A Panel of Elders led by Former Tanzanian President HE Jakaya Kikwete is expected to land in Zimbabwe today. They will be here to peruse the controversies that emanated from the SEOM preliminary report. All members of the SEOM will be assisting except Dr Mumba @ZANUPF_Official,” said Zanu PF acting director of information and publicity Cde Farai Marapira.

This is a typical Zanu PF knee jerk reaction: if the regime cannot deal with the message, it will go after the messenger with all guns blazing! Ever since releasing the critical election report, Dr Mumba has become fair game as far as this Zanu PF regime is concerned. We need to examine the facts.

SADC leaders wanted Zimbabwe’s 2013 elections postponed to allow for reforms to be implemented. “If you participate in next month’s elections, you will lose. The elections are done!” they warned Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC cronies at the special SADC Summit meeting in June 2013 in Maputo Mozambique.

As we know, MDC leaders ignored the warning and participated in the elections out of greed, as David Coltart later confessed.

“The (2013) electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility,” confessed David Coltart in his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe.

Zanu PF rigged the 2013 elections, just as the SADC leaders had warned. The regional leaders, in sheer exasperation at MDC leaders’ incompetence and betrayal, endorsed the results and granted the vote rigging Zanu PF legitimacy. SADC was to do the same again after MDC participated again in the elections with not even a token reform implemented.

CCC and the rest of Zimbabwe’s opposition were participating in these 2023 elections with not even a token reform implemented. They knew ZEC had failed to produce even something as basic as a verified voters’ roll for Pete’s sake! Zanu PF was doing what Zanu PF does best – rig the elections – naturally. It was all business as usual.

Zanu PF expected the SADC election observer team to gloss over the glaring election irregularities and illegalities, as usual. Of course, Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF cronies were absolutely shocked when Dr Mumba and his team highlighted the election flaws and illegalities, instead.

Dr Mumba, the little boy in Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, exposed the Emperor’s nakedness and, freed from all their inhabitations, everyone is laughing.

Of all people the Panel of Elders know that Zimbabwe is a failed state precisely because the country has never ever held free, fair and credible elections it its 43 years since independence in 1980. They know that SADC has not done the country any favours by turning a blind eye to Zanu PF’s failure to hold free, fair and credible elections.

The world is watching. Former President Kikwete and his Panel of Elders will lose all political and moral credibility if they fail to back Dr Mumba’s report and thus deny Zimbabwe the chance to finally end the nightmare of rigged elections and bad governance. The world is watching closely!

“Let’s Wait”: Ramaphosa Clears Air on Congratulatory Message to ED

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday said South Africa’s congratulations to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa on his re-election in the country’s recent elections was on the basis that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has declared him the winner.

Speaking to the SABC on the sidelines of his visit to Soweto, Ramaphosa called for Zimbabweans to exercise patience until everything is processed. He said:

The SADC body has issued a preliminary report. They are still going to sit down together with many other observers and analyse everything.

So, let’s wait until all that comes out but the Electoral Commission in Zimbabwe has made a declaration and it is on that basis that we have issued our congratulatory message.

So, the rest of the things still need to be processed no doubt and everybody including the government of Zimbabwe accepts that so let’s wait until everything is well processed.

Ramaphosa’s congratulatory message was met with consternation in some quarters after the SADC Observer Mission expressed its reservations about the recently concluded harmonised elections.

The SADC observer team said voting delays, the banning of opposition rallies and biased state media compromised the credibility of the 23 August elections.

Coup in Gabon, Moments after Elections Body Declare President Bongo Winner

A group of army officers in the central African nation of Gabon say they have overthrown the government of President Ali Bongo.

The officers announced the coup early Wednesday morning on national television channel Gabon 24, just moments after the nation’s election commission had announced that President Bongo had won a third term in Saturday’s general elections.

The group said that the election results were invalidated, all state institutions dissolved and all borders closed until further notice.

“We have decided to defend the peace by putting an end to the current regime,” one of the officers said.

Bongo first took office in 2009, after the death of his father, Omar Bongo who had become president in 1967.

Saturday’s elections were overshadowed by a lack of international observers, raising concerns about transparency. Afterward, Bongo’s government curtailed internet service and imposed a nightly curfew across the nation, saying it was necessary to prevent the spread of misinformation

Gunfire was heard throughout Gabon’s capital, Libreville, after the television appearance.

The declared coup comes on the heels of last month’s military overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger, the latest in a series of coups across West and Central Africa since 2020. President Bongo survived an attempted military takeover in January 2019 as he was recovering from a stroke.

Some information for this report came from Reuters, Agence France-Presse.

Investigate Abduction, Torture of CCC Activist

Amnesty International has urged the Zimbabwean government to investigate the enforced disappearance and torture of Nelson Mukwenha, a CCC political activist.

Mukwenha was allegedly abducted by suspected State security agents on 26 August.

Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Southern Africa, Khanyo Farisè, said those responsible for Mukwenha’s disappearance and torture should be brought to justice. Said Farisè:

Amnesty International strongly condemns the enforced disappearance and torture of Nelson Mukwenha, allegedly at the hands of Zimbabwe’s security forces.

Authorities must conduct a prompt, thorough, impartial, independent, effective, and transparent investigation into Mukwenha’s disappearance and torture.

The findings of any investigation must be made public and those suspected to be responsible must be brought to justice in fair trials.

Everyone, regardless of their political outlook, should be able to freely express themselves and participate in peaceful activism without the fear of abduction or harm.

The Zimbabwean authorities must respect, protect, promote and fulfill the right of everyone to physical security and safety.

The Zimbabwean authorities must ensure that enforced disappearances and abductions are treated as extremely serious crimes, and ensure justice and accountability.

Amnesty International said on 26 August 2023, Mukwenha was part of a crowd of people that prevented suspected security officials from abducting Promise Mkwananzi, spokesperson of the CCC, during a press conference in Harare.

Later that evening, Mukwenha was reportedly picked up by suspected security officials at his home in Highfields, Harare.

Mukwenha was then tortured and dumped in a forest in Mapinga, Mashonaland West Province.

Fees Hike Irks Students

University students in Zimbabwe have expressed dismay over the recent hike in tuition and accommodation fees.

Some local universities have withheld the results of students who have failed to pay fees.

Students from the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) have filed a High Court application challenging the fee adjustment for the 2023 first semester.

According to the application filed by Chambati, Makata and Makosene Attorneys, the students accused ZOU of failing to advise them of the new fees in advance. Part of the application reads:

From your communications dated June 27, 2023, you intimated the desire to balloon fees as your choice of words does intimate.

Though we understand that there exists such a hostile stagflationary environment in Zimbabwe; there is no justification whatsoever for you to be unjustly enriched at the expense of the future and legitimate expectations of innocent students.

There should be transparency and accountability in your conduct, actions, acts and omissions within the purview of equity and justice when dealing with the rights of students.

The students also accused ZOU administrators of sending the students new balances ranging from ZWL$1 million to more than ZWL$4 million.

NewsDay reported ZOU vice-chancellor Paul Gundani as saying the fees were raised due to the country’s hyperinflationary environment.

Zimbabwe National Students’ Union’s Leo Mashonganyika on Monday said the University of Zimbabwe barred students from accessing their results to force them to pay the fees.

Mnangagwa Revives POLAD To Authenticate Rigged Elections

By-Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa said he would maintain the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD), a grouping of losing presidential candidates.

POLAD was first established after the 2018 elections and 17 presidential candidates were part of the group.
Speaking at State House in Harare yesterday, Mnangagwa said he was “very happy that we created the platform”.
He said loving sons and daughters of the soil came together under POLAD and contributed immensely to national development.
President Mnangagwa said when he formed his Government, “the same facility” will be created so that again, “sons and daughters of our motherland” sit around the table and discuss ways of taking the country forward for the attainment of Vision 2030 of an empowered upper middle income society.
When POLAD was set up in 2019, it was designed to promote dialogue among all political parties in Zimbabwe.
It contributed to policy formulation through lobbying the Government via the platform.
A number of committees were set up, one of them being the economic committee, which was an advisory committee to the Government.
PDP president Mrs Lucia Matibenga said the economic committee was consulted when the Government was crafting the National Development Strategy 1, an economic blueprint that runs from 2021 until 2025.
POLAD also worked on electoral reforms, in an effort to ensure free and fair elections.
Said Mrs Matibenga in a recent interview: “The formation of POLAD is an achievement that people in a highly charged, polarised political environment have been able to come together. We must thank His Excellency for being magnanimous, for being tolerant to say we are brothers and sisters, elections have come and gone and we need to build our country and move forward.”
Another POLAD principal, Mr Kwanele Hlabangana, leader of the Republican Party (RPZ), who was the POLAD rapporteur of the international relations and re-engagement committee, said in a recent interview: “I am worried about the brand Zimbabwe.
“We might differ politically but our identity is a common denominator where we say we are Zimbabweans first before a political party. Patriotism should not be forced on you in a draconian manner; it must come naturally.” Herald

Tribute To Film Guru

THE late theatre and film guru, Susan Hains who died after a long illness last Friday has been described as a luminary who contributed immensely to the growth of the arts sector in Zimbabwe.

The death of Hains has been described as a huge blow to the creative sector as colleagues in the industry paid their respects to the late theatre and film guru at a memorial service held at Reps Theatre in Harare this Monday.

“In 1985 it was a difficult time in Zimbabwe’s theatre industry just five years after independence. Susan Haines was chair of the National Theatre Organisation. Ngungi Wamire was at the Zimbabwe Association of Community Theatre, because we did not have money, Susan put a system in place where you could borrow money and repay after production. Theatre was a business. As rooftop promotions we got a lot of assistance,” said Keith Guzha.

“In the 70s it was difficult to penetrate the industry but she helped people to the other side. She helped races to work together. Her mission was to bring people together because of her beautiful soul,” said Joyce Jenje Makwenda.

“She was a great teacher. In every play I directed, Susan had a hand in it. I have always valued her opinion. She was a fantastic and amazing teacher,” said Zane Lucas.

Family members weighed in describing the late Hains as a unifier.

The NAMA legend’s contribution to the growth of theatre and the creative sector in Zimbabwe saw her receiving recognition from the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe.

“The Government made sure that she was in the group that helped in setting up the National Arts Council.

It is not misplaced that the Government saw it fit to grant her a state-assisted funeral.

“She is one of the 25 recipients of the Silver Jubilee Award by the National Arts Council. She was part of the 40 living legends awarded a legendary award by the National Arts Council,” said the Director of the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe, Mr Nicholas Moyo.

“Death has robbed the nation of a veteran arts administrator. Susan had an immense interest in film and television and devoted a large part of her life to coaching young talent in Zimbabwe.

“She was instrumental in the establishment of the National Arts Council in Zimbabwe. She played her part well and it is left or us to align the act to enhance the development of the sector in the country,” said the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Youth, Sports Arts and Recreation, Dr Thokozile Chitepo.

Hains, who is one of the most revered arts administrators in Zimbabwe after leading the decolonisation of Zimbabwean theatre to make it more inclusive was cremated at Glen Forest Memorial Park in Harare this Monday.

Mnangagwa Persuades Lossing Candidates To Authenticate Rigged Elections

Headache For Mnangagwa As CCC Demands Fresh Polls

By- The main opposition, the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC), has given the Zanu PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa another headache as the coalition demands fresh polls.

CCC demanded a fresh election after it rejected the result of the 23 August vote condemned by the region.

CCC deputy spokesperson Gift Siziba told a news conference in Harare that the African Union and SADC should facilitate a return to legitimacy in Zimbabwe. Said Siziba:
The position of the CCC is very clear. We reject in total the results of the elections held on 23 August because the electoral process was flawed and fraught with illegalities.
As a way forward we are demanding fresh elections that are free, fair and credible.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa of the ruling ZANU PF party won a second term after he polled 52.6% of the vote, and CCC candidate Nelson Chamisa scored 44%.
Election Observer reports from SADC, the Carter Centre and EU all agreed that the electoral field was uneven and the conditions were not conducive for a free election.

I’m the victim – Torro says as he disputes rape allegations

By A Correspondent| Popular music promoter Charles ‘Torro’ Guvamatanga has laughed off allegations he raped his niece in a house with three other people without her raising alarm.

Torro who was arrested early this year over the allegations gave his defence before a Harare regional magistrate on Tuesday morning splashing mud on his accuser’s allegations.

He said he is a victim as the girl forced herself on him after he declined her sexual advances and she made the allegations as a counter after he had threatened to let her sisters know about the incident.

“Accused will demonstrate that complainant’s whole story is false and unbelievable. For example, why would she not scream when she allegedly saw that accused was about to rape her or even during the alleged rape or soon after since she knew her sisters were in the lounge just about 6m away.

The alleged incident reportedly occurred after a drinking binge and Torro suspects the girl drugged him in the process before invading his bedroom.

His lawyers believe the girl is not a credible witness, producing video evidence showing the minor who was 17 in a no under 18 club, twearking and in tight fitting clothes despite her claims she was wearing baggy pants which made it easy for her alleged abuser to remove.

It is also their argument that her testimony has inconsistencies, having told the magistrate that she was awaken by Torro removing her trousers yet in her statement to the police, she said she was awakened by Torro touching her privates.

“He never raped complainant in the manner alleged or at all. In fact, he is the actual victim in this case because complainant committed an act of aggravated indecent assault upon him while he was in an involuntarily induced sleep and inebriation.

Torro says he was feeling weak and drowsy, thinking it was fatigue caused by lack of sleep after their night out clubbing and was shocked to see the girl naked.

“Accused will state that he suspects that complainant who had shown some unusual ‘interest’ in him earlier when they were clubbing could have drugged him and subsequently raped him while he was asleep.

“Accused was later shocked to see complainant in his bedroom, half naked when he was woken up by some unusual painful feeling of discomfort, the weight he felt over his body and rubbing of his penis against something.

“He was shocked to see complainant in his bed sitting on top of him holding his penis with her right hand and trying to force his penis into her vagina. Accused noticed she was half naked with her top on and pantie on which she had pulled by the side as she tried to force accused’s penis into her vagina. Complainant had removed her trousers she had been wearing earlier on,” his lawyer submitted.

“Accused told complainant that he was not going to have sex with her, to leave his bedroom and that he was not interested in what he was doing because they are somehow related as well. Complainant then forcefully then sat on accused’s face with her pantie, still pulled by the side demanding that accused give her oral sex by licking her vagina.

“Accused who was feeling very weak but was able to push her off his face as she was pleading with him to at least give her oral sex so that she could let him be and allow accused to sleep and rest.

“The rape allegations by complainant are clearly false, an afterthought and a counter report after accused told complainant that he was to go and report her conduct to her sisters. Complainant also felt very embarrassed after accused condemned her conduct, what she had done to him and obviously found it convenient to counter accused’s report so that she could appear as the victim when in actual fact she probably raped accused. She was also angry that accused had shown no interest in her, declined her invitation to have sex, thus was too embarrassed,” the lawyers added.

Magaya Strikes Again, Rolls Out Bogus Juventus Talent Search

Scores of parents fell victim to a fraudulent scheme orchestrated by controversial cleric Walter Magaya and his football club, Yadah FC where false claims were propagated, suggesting that the renowned Italian football club, Juventus FC, had joined hands with Yadah FC to scout young talent within the country.

Motivated by the enticing prospect of their children being scouted by a reputable international football club, parents enthusiastically enrolled their aspiring young footballers, paying a participation fee of US$20 per child.

However, an investigation led by sports blogger Makomborero Mutimukulu revealed that Juventus had never entered into such an agreement with Yadah FC or Magaya.

According to Juventus’ Academy Area Manager, Marco Degortes, the club does not “have any program in Zimbabwe, and nobody has the official right to run any activities on behalf of Juventus.”

Further inquiries also unveiled that the Zimbabwean government’s sports governing body, the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), had approved the “Juventus Academy pre-trials.” This raises substantial questions about the diligence exercised by the relevant authorities in scrutinizing the assertions made by Yadah FC.

Meanwhile, in response to the exposé, Magaya has revised his narrative to now include “international scouts.”

Attempts to reach Yadah FC’s management proved unsuccessful.

Mbare Drug Dealer Wins Zanu PF Council Seat

Suspected drug lord Simbarashe (Dhama) Chanachimwe who had a brush with the law during the COVID-19 lockdown has won the right to represent Mbare in the Harare City Council.

Dhama shocked the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change in the harmonised elections last week after winning Mbare ward 3 seat for the ruling Zanu PF party which last won the seat in the 2013 elections.

Dhama was last year barred from holding political meetings and holding a position in Zanu PF until his disciplinary issues were resolved.

He was arrested in February this year for drug possession.

Dhama faced a drug possession charge after being caught with 26 sachets of dagga and a dagga plant measuring 1,7 metres at his drug base affectionately known as PaDhama which is situated at an open space near Block 14 Matapi Flats, Mbare.

He was released on ZWL$50 000 bail.

In 2021, Dhama was arrested for breaching COVID-19 regulations after sponsoring a concert in Mbare with Levels and Fantan.

Mwonzora Says Not Interested In Election Results

The opposition MDC says it is not interested in the outcome of the recently-held harmonised elections because the party was not involved in the electoral process.

Party leader Douglas Mwonzora withdrew from the presidential race citing an unfair electoral playing field which he said was tilted in favour of the ruling Zanu-PF, but he was included on the ballot paper and garnered 28 883 votes.

Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, Mwonzora said the MDC boycotted the elections because they were fundamentally flawed.

“We had nothing to do with the results of the elections. We made it clear that we are not in this election, so we are not interested in the results of this election. Those who were in this election can advise us better,” he said.

“We had no dog in the fight. We disagree because this election is fundamentally flawed on the basis of delimitation, on the basis of discrimination, on the basis of disenfranchisement of other people.”

He said the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission kept his name on the presidential ballot to allocate him a figure.

“I am not interested in the figure. I told them I was not interested in their election and I have very little interest in the results of this election because they are not very meaningful to us,” he said.

“What we do know is that the condition for free and fair elections has not existed for us because 87 of our candidates were disenfranchised and people were denied the right to exercise their right.”

Mwonzora called for dialogue among political parties to promote democracy in Zimbabwe.

“A government of national unity is a possible outcome of a dialogue. We cannot pre-empt what the dialogue must bring because we have said that the dialogue should be unconditional and must be inclusive, but the process must be done to better the life of Zimbabwe,” Mwonzora said.

“The dialogue we are calling for is true dialogue that must be organic, that must include political and non-political actors and the generality of Zimbabwean people to get a Zimbabwe that is for everyone.”

Mwonzora took over the MDC from Nelson Chamisa through the courts after successfully challenging his ascendancy to the presidency following the death of party founder Morgan Tsvangirai in February 2018.

However, many argue that his takeover was facilitated by the ruling Zanu-PF government to weaken the country’s opposition.

Opposition Leader Urges Global Prayer Amidst Zimbabwe’s Unfolding Political Crisis

By A Correspondent| The leader of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Nelson Chamisa has issued a fervent call to church leaders and intercessors worldwide to unite in prayer for Zimbabwe.

The crisis follows the recent electoral defeat of Chamisa by Emmerson Mnangagwa of the ruling Zanu-PF party.

Mnangagwa secured victory with 52.6% of the vote, while Chamisa garnered 44%.

Addressing the media on Sunday afternoon, Chamisa vehemently rejected the election results, vowing that his party would take decisive action in response.

Though the specific nature of this “action” remains undisclosed, Chamisa’s impassioned plea for prayers indicates the gravity of the situation.

The opposition leader has implored the church community and intercessors worldwide to join forces and pray fervently for Zimbabwe’s welfare in these crucial moments.

Said Chamisa: “I encourage the church of Zimbabwe, intercessors across the world, please pray for Zimbabwe as we go into these decisive steps to make sure that we fix aright our country and we restore democracy, legitimacy, peace, sanity, respect of each and every citizen.

“I ask you leaders and change champions to be vigilant and ensure that together the voice of change rings loud. Your voice and effort shall not be disregarded.

“We shall not allow that, let us come together and defend our voice, effort and liberating ideas, one man one vote, it must happen.”

He added: “Africa do not leave us, particularly our fellow brothers and sisters in the region and on the continent, we count on your solidarity as we seek to resolve this emerging political crisis,

“I know God has remembered us. Help us in this remembrance and this last march.”

US Govt Issues Statement On Zim Elections

The United States is committed to the people of Zimbabwe and their right to choose their leaders in free and fair elections conducted in a transparent manner. We commend those who sought to exercise their right to vote peacefully.

Although the Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC) has announced results of the country’s recent presidential election, multiple observation missions have expressed deep concerns and stated that the country’s electoral process did not meet regional and international standards for credibility. For example, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and other international electoral observation missions cited problems with transparency, independence, fairness, and credibility at all stages of the electoral process. The United States notes in particular the systemic bias against political opposition during the pre-election period and reports from respected civil society groups that ZEC officials pressured election observers to sign altered polling station result forms. We call on the ZEC to make the disaggregated polling station results publicly available to increase confidence in the result tabulation process.

We also strongly condemn the intimidation and disruption of lawful election observers throughout the electoral period. On August 23 the government arrested staff from respected civil society organizations engaged in lawful election observation in accordance with the Electoral Act. These arrests prevented efforts to independently verify ZEC’s announced results, a fundamental component of democratic processes in the region and around the world. Furthermore, threats directed against members of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission are dangerous, and we call upon the Government of Zimbabwe to cease these inflammatory and unacceptable attacks.

These actions belie President Mnangagwa’s repeated pledges to respect rule of law, transparency, and accountability. The United States is engaging regional leaders to share our concerns, including what this means for the international community’s nascent efforts to reengage the Zimbabwean government. There is much at stake for the people of Zimbabwe and the region. We urge all Zimbabweans to remain peaceful and pursue grievances through established legal channels.

“Chiwenga Screamed”: Court Hears

By A Correspondent- Vice President Constantino Chiwenga reportedly screamed for help when his former wife Marry Mubaiwa allegedly tried to pull out an intravenous life-saving tube at a South African hospital in 2018, Health and Child Care deputy minister John Mangwiro told the court yesterday.

Mangwiro said he rushed into the intensive care unit where Chiwenga was booked after he heard him screaming for help.

Mangwiro, who was Chiwenga’s personal doctor, was testifying in Mubaiwa’s trial for attempting to kill Chiwenga.

He also told the court that Mubaiwa tried all means to kill her ex-husband, saying he was forced to board another aircraft without his patient who needed care during the flight.

“When we arrived at Lanseria Airport in Pretoria (South Africa), the accused person delayed us for more than three hours at the airport where she had a misunderstanding with the immigration officials,” Mangwiro said. “She told the immigration officials that her son was Chiwenga’s biological son, but the documents bore other names. We waited for three hours as there was a stand-off.”

He said the delay was unnecessary because Chiwenga needed urgent medical attention, adding that he was surprised when they were led to a hotel instead of NetCare Hospital, where he had booked for Chiwenga.

“We were supposed to go to NetCare Hospital as we had left Zimbabwe for that destination. To my disappointment, the then powerful accused directed us to Sheraton Hotel. It was a dangerous decision because it continued to endanger the life of the Vice-President.

“We then got to the basement of the hotel and we immediately confronted the accused to say the Vice-President needed life-saving hospitalisation rather than to come to a hotel.

CCC Plans To Block Zanu PF Coup

By- The opposition CCC said it would not wait for another five years to challenge the rigged elections.

The CCC leader, Nelson Chamisa, said this after the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) Sartuday declared President Emmerson Mnangagwa the winner in the 23 and 24 August presidential elections.

ZEC said Mnangagwa garnered 2 350 711 votes (52.6%) of the 4 468 730 votes cast against Chamisa’s 1 967 343, constituting 44%.
However, Chamisa rejected the results and claimed CCC was in possession of the V11 and V23B forms, whose results were different from those used by ZEC to declare Mnangagwa the winner.
Addressing a Press conference in Harare on the morning after the declaration of the presidential election results, Chamisa said:
What is our next step? There is going to be a change in Zimbabwe. Whether ZANU PF people want it or not? It’s not going to be easy, but there shall be a change.
We will not wait for five years. There has to be change now. We are going to lead in making sure that change comes to Zimbabwe.
Mr Mnangagwa knows that he has performed a coup since 2008 a coup on the ballot; 2017 a coup on the elected leader; 2018 a coup on the ballot. He has repeated again, 2023, a coup on the ballot.
You can’t survive this too many times. This time, no further! We have drawn a line in the sand.
We will not allow you to abuse people. You are not the last person in Zimbabwe.
Chamisa also said the opposition party is on a diplomatic offensive to ensure that “errors” in the elections are corrected. He said:
We are ready to form the next government on account of correcting all the errors that we have identified. We have the results and we will form that government.
We are on a peaceful offensive. We are on a diplomatic offensive. We are going to take an offensive stance in a progressive and democratic manner to make sure that the voice of the people is respected and ultimately the voice of God reigns in this country.
Meanwhile, on Sunday Police warned political parties against conducting ” popcorn demonstrations” or inciting violence and issuing threats, saying lawbreakers will be arrested.

Jailed Mai Titi To Attend Zim Agric Show

By-The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services said the jailed comedienne Mai TT is expected to interact with her fans at the Zimbabwe Agricultural Show.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) national spokesperson, Superintendent Meya Khanyezi, disclosed this yesterday.
“ZPCS stands are loaded with various activities this week at the Agricultural Show,” said Supt Khanyezi.
“Among the activities are performances by inmates and Mai TT is expected to be among them, ZPCS Chivaraidze traditional dance group that recently received an award at the Chibuku Neshamwari, horse riding and many more.
“One of the attractions will be a polished tree trump crafted by inmates in their efforts to show the importance of waste management.
“They have a number of items they worked on from waste and will be showcasing them and we are urging people to support them by buying their wares.”
Khanyezi added: “ZPCS is known for farming, come and witness our breed of cows and bulls apart from maize yields.”
Mai TT, who has a massive fan base, was jailed for an effective nine months after she was convicted of theft of trust property.
She used a hired car as surety for a loan.

Chamisa Plans Rigged Votes Challenge Strategies

By- The opposition CCC leader, Nelson Chamisa, says there will be a change in Zimbabwe’s political landscape soon, and the opposition party will not wait another five years to contest in general elections.

On Saturday night, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) declared President Emmerson Mnangagwa the winner in the 23 and 24 August presidential elections.

Chamisa Exposes Another Coup

By- The opposition CCC leader, Nelson Chamisa has exposed Zanu PF’s continued coup through the ballot and said that the regime would not succeed this time.

After Saturday night, Chamisa said that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) declared President Emmerson Mnangagwa the winner in the 23 and 24 August presidential elections.

Prof Madhuku Accepts Election Defeat

“Proclaim a New Election Date”: Kasukuwere

By A Correspondent- Former Zanu Pf heavyweight who is currently in exile Saviour Kasukuwere has urged the Zimbabwean authorities to proclaim a new election date arguing that the just ended harmonised polls are illegal and were declared void by election observers.

Kasukuwere, whose presidential aspirants were quashed by the Zimbabwean courts called on the government to proclaim a new election date and ensure that the polls are done in accordance with the “dictus of the law”.

Said Kasukuwere:

“The Zimbabwe General elections have been declared illegal and void by SOEM. Nothing legitimate can flow from it. We need a new proclamation and date of elections which must be done in dictus of the law, SOEM guidelines et al.!!!!

“CCC Facilitating Zimbabwe’s Re-colonisation”: Zanu PF

The ruling Zanu-PF party has accused the United States of interfering in Zimbabwe’s political affairs, claiming that the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) is a puppet party bent on facilitating Zimbabwe’s re-colonisation.

The ruling party’s vitriol comes after the Southern African Development Community Election Observer Mission (SEOM), African Union-Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, European Union Observer Mission, Commmonwealth Observer Mission and the Carter Center raised the red flag over the August 23 and 24 polls.

The US embassy in Harare also released a statement saying it shared the sentiments of the different missions.

“These missions cited problems with the transparency, independence, fairness and credibility of electoral processes; undue restrictions on the rights to freedom of assembly and association, and freedom of expression that are guaranteed by Zimbabwe’s Constitution and reflected in regional guidelines; reports of voter intimidation; and the disenfranchisement of candidates, particularly women,” the US Embassy statement said.

Soon after President Emmerson Mnangagwa was proclaimed winner of the largely controversial poll with a 52,6% win against opposition leader Nelson Chamisa’s 44%, Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa said the opposition CCC party would never rule Zimbabwe because it was an infiltration tool by the West to recolonise Zimbabwe.

Addressing journalists in Harare yesterday, Mutsvangwa said: “America does not want to believe that Africa can make sovereign decisions about its resources. They want to control those resources by putting puppets in government and get them for free.

“What happens in the end is that they are expecting to have supper of African resources. We have already finished breakfast with the Chinese, the Indians and we are not going to stop and wait for America.”

Mutsvangwa said the US was a greedy country which developed by capitalising on developing countries such as Zimbabwe.

“Americans want to have a free ride on African resources; they do not want to buy them on the market like the Chinese and the Indians. They want to put a puppet in Zimbabwe and then come and negotiate with a puppet so that they get freebies.

“We will crush protests”: Police

Police have accused the opposition of planning to roll out protests against President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s controversial election victory and have warned they will crush such demonstrations.

This comes after the main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) which commands a large following in the country has rejected Saturday’s results which gave the incumbent 52,6 percent of the national vote against his rival, Nelson Chamisa’s 44 percent.

In a statement on Sunday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the opposition was mobilising its members to carry out a false verification exercise in Harare when its real intentions were to embark on protests.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is fully aware of attempts by some political activists to mobilise groups of people to move in small numbers and come to Harare for purported briefing and popcorn demonstrations under the guise of citizen voter audit or verification.

This has even been given credence by some social media posts obtained by the police where some individuals and groups are openly inciting violence and issuing threats aimed at causing alarm and despondence among Zimbabweans.

“The police will not hesitate to effect arrests on such criminal elements,” Nyathi said.

He said, “Zimbabweans should feel free to go to their workplaces, to conduct family and other activities without fear or any form of intimidation from anyone”.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has deployed police officers throughout the country to maintain law and order.”

“Any form of unlawful political gatherings will be dealt with by the police in terms of the country’s laws,” Nyathi said.-Zimlive

“You know where to go and complain”: ED tells opposition

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Sunday morning rejected allegations by the opposition that the 2023 presidential election was rigged in his favour.

He also said observer missions that criticised the country’s laws “overstepped” their mandate.

Mnangagwa addressed reporters at State House the morning after the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced him as the winner with 52.6% of the poll, beating CCC’s Nelson Chamisa’s 44%.

Asked to respond to allegations by his competitors that the election was shameful and neither free nor fair, Mnangagwa said:

“I can assure you that I did not conduct the elections. I competed with them in this race to win the elections.

“Those who feel the race was not run fairly, should know where to go to complain.

Zimbabwe’s 2023 Harmonised Elections were criticised by the SADC observer mission, which said some parts of the electoral process fell short of standards. SEOM head Nevers Mumba said:

ZEC Opens up on ballot papers

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) printed 7,126,600 ballot papers against a voting population of 6,623,511 eligible to take part in next Wednesday’s harmonised elections.

This was revealed in a notice by the poll management authority’s chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana concerning data on balloting material set to be used in the crucial poll.

Silaigwana also said 7,098,750 ballot papers were being printed for the national assembly vote while 6,854,259 were set for local authority polls.

ZEC said the balloting material was being printed at Mining and Printing Company of Zimbabwe (MPCZ) which is found at Number 1, George Drive, Msasa, Harare.

Silaigwana said “a total of seven million one hundred and twenty-six thousand, six hundred (7,126,600) presidential ballot papers” were being printed.

“…Seven million and ninety-eight thousand, seven hundred and fifty (7,098,750) national assembly ballot papers, and;

“…Six million eight hundred and sixty-one thousand, six hundred and fifty (6,861,650) local authority ballot papers have been printed for the conduct of elections on the 23rd of August 2023.”

The top ZEC official said the numbers of ballot papers allocated to each province were as specified in the published schedule.

He said ZEC calculated a 3 percent contingency for each polling station.

Silaigwana also explained reasons behind the differences in the number of ballot papers being printed for the three-tier election.

“With respect to the national assembly election an independent candidate for Gutu West National Assembly passes away and the election will be conducted on a later date,” he said.

“…With respect to the local authority election, no election will be held in 91 wards because the candidates for those wards were returned unopposed and while 4 candidates passed away and the ward elections will be conducted on a later date.”

Silaigwana said for the presidential ballot papers, there is a total of 6,623,511 voters with ZEC factoring in a 7, 6 percent contingency.

For the national assembly ballot papers, there is a total of 6,597,865 voters. ZEC factored in 7, 6 percent contingency.

For local authority elections, a total of 6,604,462 voters and a contingency of 3, 5 percent was calculated.

Postal voting has already commenced with police officers voting ahead of the plebiscite.

The window is extended to citizens who carry out essential services on voting day.

These include members of the security forces and healthcare workers.-zimlive

Additionally, attendees can look forward to horse riding and other exciting attractions.

One of the highlights of the event will be a polished tree trunk crafted by inmates, emphasizing the importance of waste management. The inmates have created numerous items from waste materials, which will be on display and available for purchase. Superintendent Khanyezi encouraged people to support the inmates by buying their wares.

Furthermore, Khanyezi highlighted that the ZPCS is renowned for its farming activities. Visitors to the agricultural show will have the opportunity to witness the impressive breed of cows and bulls, as well as observe the maize yields.

Mai TT, known for her large fan base, is currently serving a nine-month sentence after being convicted of theft involving trust property. She had used a hired car as collateral for a loan. Her sentence is expected to be completed in December.

UN “Concerned” by Zim polls

By A Correspondent- United Nations secretary general António Guterres is “concerned” about developments in Zimbabwe after President Emmerson Mnangagwa claimed a controversial re-election, his office said on Sunday.

Mnangagwa was declared winner of last Wednesday’s vote with 52.6 percent, but his main rival Nelson Chamisa, who obtained 44 percent, said the results were “not genuine” and has vowed to release his own party’s tallies.

Foreign observer missions have unanimously characterised the election as skewed in Mnangagwa’s favour and concluded that it did not meet the standards set by Zimbabwean law, regional and international bodies.

“The secretary general is closely following developments in Zimbabwe’s elections. He is concerned about the arrest of observers, reports of voter intimidation, threats of violence, harassment and coercion,” said Florencia Soto Niño-Martínez, a spokesman for Guterres.

“The secretary general calls on political leaders and their supporters to reject any and all forms of violence, threats of violence, or incitement to violence, and to ensure that human rights and the rule of law are fully respected.

“The secretary general calls on political actors to peacefully settle any disputes through established legal and institutional channels, and urges the competent authorities to resolve any disputes in a fair, expeditious, and transparent manner to ensure that the results are a true reflection of the will of the people.”

Chamisa alleged “blatant and gigantic fraud” in the election and has vowed to release his own party’s tallies to prove that he won the election.

“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission regrettably and once again failed to perform its constitutional mandate by not announcing the correct and accurate results. Notwithstanding the flaws of the election, genuine results should have been announced, and we have the genuine results,” Chamisa told a news conference in Harare.

“There’s going to be change in Zimbabwe, whether Zanu PF people want it or not. It’s not going to be easy, but we must change. We will not wait for 5 years, there has to be change now. We will put a full stop to this madness, whatever it takes.”

The election “has not passed the test of constitutionality, legality and legitimacy,” Chamisa said, describing it as a “sham.”

Mnangagwa denied the election was flawed as he defended his victory.

“I did not conduct these elections. I think those who feel the race was not run properly know where to go to complain. I am so happy,” he said at a news conference Sunday, adding that the elections were run “transparently, fairly in broad daylight.”

International election observers have noted problems with the election, citing an atmosphere of intimidation against Chamisa’s supporters and voter suppression in the opposition’s urban strongholds after ballot papers were delivered late.

The election observers said they had specific concerns over a ruling party affiliate organisation called Forever Associates of Zimbabwe that they said set up tables at polling stations and took details of people walking into voting booths. The head of the African Union observer mission, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, said the FAZ activities should be declared “criminal offences.”

Zimbabwe has a history of disputed and sometimes violent elections in the more than four decades of Zanu PF rule, most notably under autocratic former president Robert Mugabe, who was leader for 37 years and oversaw a period of economic collapse that gained Zimbabwe international notoriety.

Rights abuses under Mugabe also resulted in the United States and the European Union applying sanctions on Zimbabwe for alleged human rights abuses. Those sanctions are largely still in place.

Mugabe was removed from power in a military-led coup in 2017 and replaced with Mnangagwa, his former vice president. The coup was widely popular and celebrated as a new dawn, but while Mnangagwa promised an era of freedom and prosperity, critics allege the former guerrilla fighter nicknamed “the crocodile” has become more repressive than his predecessor.-ZimLive

“Zanu Pf Abusing Mupedzanhamo”: Harare Residents Trust

HARARE Residents Trust (HRT) has berated the ongoing abuse of Mupedzanhamo flea market by alleged Zanu-PF-related space barons, saying the ruling party lacks the will to discipline the rogue elements.

The City of Harare claims that the Joint Operations Command, the supreme organ which co-ordinates the country’s security, is blocking the reopening of Mupedzanhamo flea market.

The market, which falls under the city’s administration, has been officially closed since the COVID-19 era following violent skirmishes between the opposition and ruling party supporters over spaces.

Though officially closed, Mupedzanhamo is now operating as a food stall and parking area.

Speaking during a Zimbabwe Union of Journalists  Press briefing recently, HRT director Precious Shumba said: “When we look at the well-being of the illegal sector especially in Mbare, there is not much change because it looks like even political parties are scared of these vigilante groups.”

“Mupedzanhamo has been closed since 2020 to 2021. Inside there are people who conduct cooking business, there are people using it as a car park and charging a fee, but it is an asset of the city of Harare.

It was closed by the late Minister Oliver Chidawu and the current secretary for devolution affairs Tafadzwa Muguti. It has not been opened due to these vigilante groups.”

Shumba said the vigilante groups pledged their allegiance to Zanu-PF, but essentially they are just thugs taking advantage of the situation.

“We believe Zanu-PF (protects) these people for their campaigns. The issue lies around the willingness of the ruling party to stop their groups from doing what they are doing.

“At Mbare police stations, we have engaged several officers and they have washed their hands off  the (issue),” Shumba said, calling on political parties to engage residents in different communities when formulating their manifestos to help solve such issues as the Mupedzanhamo market.

Harare mayor Jacob Mafume told NewsDay that there was an action plan to ensure the restoration of Mupedzanhamo.

“We are going to come up with a new design and order in Mupedzanhamo just as we have done with Rufaro Stadium. The whole area is going to be urbanised or rather modernised,” he said.

“As for the illegal activities our development control unit will do its best to clamp down on those,” he said.-newsday

Losing Esau Mupfumi Breaks Silence

By A Correspondent- Mutare Central Zanu-PF losing candidate Esau Mupfumi has broken his silence over his defeat to Citizens Coalition for Change’s Brian James in last week’s parliamentary elections, saying he lost to sellouts.

The Zanu-PF central committee member said his supporters should not be discouraged by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)’s clean sweep of all the 19 council seats.

In an interview yesterday, Mupfumi, a transport mogul, expressed gratitude to all those that voted for him in the just ended harmonised elections.

“I greatly appreciate your support, faith and  confidence in me but the outcome was unexpected after all the efforts. I extend my sincere thanks to the campaign teams, loyal supporters, party leadership and all party structures,” he said.

Many of you spent hundreds of hours contributing to the campaign and I sincerely thank each of you. The majority of people in Mutare Central have chosen to sell out the country that our forefathers and mothers fought and died for in the liberation struggle.

“This country did not come on a silver platter, it was paid for in full measure and ultimate sacrifice of blood and life but the majority has sold out for a plate of porridge.”

Mupfumi carried out various developmental projects in the constituency ahead of polls.

Zanu-PF candidates in Mutare urban also lost in parliamentary elections. In Chikanga constituency, Kenneth Muchina lost to CCC candidate Lynette Karenyi Kore while in Dangamvura Clyde Jani was outpolled by Prosper Mutseyami.

CCC is now assured that the next mayor will come from the opposition party.-newsday

Kombi Driver Killed Over Fare

By A Correspondent- A 24 year old artisanal miner allegedly stabbed a kombi driver to death after refusing to pay a kombi fare from city to Cowdray Park suburb in Bulawayo.

Police said the suspect, Liberty Ncube who is an artisanal miner in Inyathi, was in the company of Nkosilathi Sibanda, who is still at large, when they fatally attacked Mr Simbarashe Chabata on Saturday night.

Ncube has since been arrested and is assisting police with investigations.

Mr Chabata was a rank marshal at an area between Luveve Road and Ngcebetsha Street in Nguboyenja.

On the fateful day, Mr Chabata was driving a kombi, which he had borrowed from a friend.

Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident yesterday.

He said Ncube and Sibanda boarded the kombi that Mr Chibata was driving in the city enroute to Cowdray Park at around 10pm.

Insp Ncube said along the way Ncube and Sibanda refused to pay the fare prompting Mr Chabata to stop the vehicle so that he could collect the fares.

He said before Mr Chabata could disembark from the vehicle, Ncube stabbed him on the left shoulder and palm.

Insp Ncube said other passengers left the kombi and fled in different directions fearing for their lives.

He said Mr Chabata also tried to flee from the two suspects but they caught up with him about 20 metres away from the vehicle and stabbed him again.

Insp Ncube said after the attack the accused ran away but members of the public managed to apprehend Ncube.

“Mr Chabata sustained injuries and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital where he died upon admission.

“We have arrested Ncube, an artisanal miner operating in Inyathi area. His accomplice Sibanda fled after committing the crime and we have launched a manhunt,” said Insp Ncube.

He said Ncube is expected to appear in court soon facing murder charges.

Insp Ncube appealed to members of the public who might have information on the whereabouts of Sibanda to contact any nearest police station.

ZEC, FAZ Fuel Voter Apathy

By A Correspondent- Two million registered voters did not vote out of the approximately 6,6 million eligible to participate in the recent harmonised elections, with political analysts blaming it on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) and the shadowy group, Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ).

Announcing election results on Saturday evening, Zec said 68,9% of the registered voters turned out to vote.

“About 6 619 691 people registered to vote, 4 561 221 total votes cast and 2 062 290 registered voters did not vote, 92 553 ballots were spoiled and 4 468 668 were valid votes,” Zec said.

In interviews yesterday, political analysts blamed the low turnout on the delay by Zec to distribute council ballot papers.

They also fingered the Zanu-PF affiliate and Central Intelligence Organisation-linked, FAZ, for intimidating potential voters.

FAZ operatives were stationed at most polling stations in rural and urban areas conducting what they termed “Exit Poll Survey”.

Zimbabwe Election Advocacy Trust executive director, Ignatious Sadziwa attributed the voter apathy to the heavy presence of FAZ at the polling stations.

“We attribute that to heavy intimidation witnessed in most rural areas where FAZ was deployed to scare villagers. Delays in the arrival of voting material in most urban polling stations also discouraged most voters from participating,” Sadziwa said.

He said the low turnout was a serious blow to the country’s democracy.

It raises questions about the legitimacy of the election and the ability of Zec to conduct free and fair elections. It also undermines the confidence of voters in the electoral process,” he said.

Election Resource Centre legal and advocacy officer, Takunda Tsunga, said the apathy was worsened by Zec’s lack of independence in the electoral process.

“While there had been general apathy in the build up to the election, the turnout was worsened by what seems to be systematic administrative efforts by the commission to deny citizens especially in urban areas equal opportunity to vote in the election,” Tsunga said.

Political analyst Effie Ncube said the elections were marred by confusion as people failed to find their names in the voters roll.

“People could not vote because they could not find their names in the voters roll, so they could not vote because they were redirected to other polling stations. They had to move from one polling station to another. Some gave up and went back home,” Ncube said.

He condemned FAZ for intimidating voters, saying it was a violation of the electoral law.

“No one should be allowed to intimidate anyone, whether they are political parties or non-governmental organisations because it renders elections not free and fair.

“An organisation like FAZ was involved in intimidating people. This reduced elections from being free and fair. People were denied the right to vote freely,” he added.

The international and regional communities also condemned the intimidation of voters by FAZ and called on Zec to independently address the issue.

In 2018, elections were marred by massive voter apathy owing to a lack of confidence in electoral processes, among other reasons.-newsday

CCC Candidates Reject “Rigged” Poll Outcome

By A Correspondent- Citizens Coalitions for Change (CCC) candidates for Mbare and Mutasa South constituencies have rejected the election results saying they were rigged.

Voting in Mutasa South constituency, Manicaland province, ended on Thursday night as most parts of the constituency had no ballot papers when voting commenced on Wednesday morning.

“This election was a sham,” Mutasa South CCC candidate Regai Tsunga said.

“People had to vote during the night on Thursday without the full view of the public and Zanu-PF took advantage and mobilised during the night using various unorthodox means like bussing people to vote.

“At Premier ward 25, there were disturbing incidents as Zanu-PF supporters were transported during the night. This was not a free and fair election at all.”

Zanu-PF candidate for Mutasa South Misheck Mugadza emerged victorious, according to preliminary reports.

Mugadza said he was not aware of the allegations of bussing supporters at night when contacted for comment.

Zanu-PF won at least 19 seats out of 26 in Manicaland province.

In Mbare, CCC candidate Starman Chamisa also disputed the results.

“I have been engaging the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) demanding a recount as I feel that I was cheated,” Chamisa said.

“However, even if I don’t make it into Parliament, I can still work with my people because they had hope in the CCC.”

The elections were marred by irregularities, among them the late delivery of ballot papers.

Yesterday, the Southern African Development Community observer mission released a damning report saying the polls did not meet the regional standards and guidelines regarding the holding of free, fair and credible elections.-Newsday

Understanding the Different Types of Bets and Odds
Betting on sports is an enjoyable activity for many people across the world and understanding the different types of bets and odds can help make it even more fun. The most popular type of sports betting is point spread betting, which requires predicting which team will win a game by a specific number of points. Moneyline betting is a common form of sports betting where you choose which team will win a game without considering any point spread. Over/under betting is a type of bet in which the gambler wagers on whether the total number of points scored by both teams will be over or under a certain number. Prop bets are specific wagers placed on individual players or teams, such as which player will score first in a game. Finally, parlay betting involves placing multiple bets, and all wagers must be correct in order for the gambler to win.
To succeed in sports betting, it is important to grasp the mechanics of each betting type. It is important to know what type of bet is best for a particular situation and understand the odds associated with each type of bet. Doing research on team performance, player stats, and other factors can help a gambler make informed decisions when placing their bets. With the right knowledge and strategy, sports betting can be a great way to have some fun and possibly make some money.

Tips for Choosing the Right Teams to Bet On
When choosing the right teams to bet on, it is important to carefully consider several factors:

  1. One should assess the team’s overall performance in past tournaments or games. A team with a good track record is likely to be a more reliable and successful bet than one that has not done well in the past.
  2. It is important to examine the individual players on each team and their histories when playing against one another. Examining the win/loss ratio of a particular team against each other and looking at individual players’ past performances can help determine which team is the wiser bet.
  3. Studying how teams play against certain opponents or in specific environments can help one decide which team to put their money on.
In addition to considering past performance and individual player records, one should also take into consideration the current state of each team. This includes any injuries or changes in the team’s lineup that might impact their performance. Additionally, one should look at the current standings of each team and their recent form. This will help determine which team will likely be more successful and reliable when betting on them.
Finally, one should also consider the odds of the teams they are betting on. Paying attention to the current lines and spreads will help determine which team will likely be more successful in a given match-up. By carefully considering these factors, one can make wiser bets and increase their chances of success in sports betting. Researching and analyzing teams thoroughly can help one make more informed decisions when betting on sports.
    Conclusion
Football betting in Kenya can be a lucrative source of income if done correctly. We trust that this comprehensive guide has provided you with the essential information and advice to help you make well-informed choices regarding football betting. Always research before placing any bets; don’t rely on luck or intuition! Additionally, limit yourself for how much money you are willing to bet and winnings that will satisfy you. These strategies will help ensure that your football betting experience is enjoyable while increasing your chances of success.

SADC Concerned about Personal Attacks on its Head of Mission

SADC Expresses concern on statements made about its Electoral Observation Mission
in Zimbabwe and the personal attacks to its Head of SEOM following the release of its
Preliminary Statement on Zimbabwe Harmonised Elections 26 August 2023, Gaborone, Botswana:

The Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) has noted with deep concern, statements made about the SEOM and the personal attacks directed at the Head of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM), Dr Nevers Mumba, the former Vice President of the Republic of Zambia, since the SEOM released its Preliminary Statement on 25 August 2023. Some of these statements and attacks which have been aired on television, social media and newspapers are crude, scurrilous and misleading.

The SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) is currently in the Republic of Zimbabwe to observe the electoral process of the 23-24 August Harmonised Elections in line with Article 3 of the Revised SADC Principles and Guideline Governing Democratic Elections (2021).

The Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics Defence and Security Cooperation, His Excellency Mr. Hakainde Hichilema, President of the Republic of Zambia, appointed Dr. Nevers Mumba to lead the SEOM in Zimbabwe.

The SEOM is mandated to observe elections in terms of the SADC Principles and
Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, and all SADC Member States, including the
Republic of Zimbabwe, are signatory to these principles, which have been operational since 2004.

All SADC Member States send individuals to serve as observers under the SEOM. For
the August 2023 Harmonised Elections in Zimbabwe, observers were seconded from the
Republic of Angola, the Republic of Botswana, the Kingdom of Eswatini, the Republic of
Malawi, the Republic of Mozambique, the Republic of Namibia, the Republic of South Africa,
the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Zambia. Based on observations made by the observers who were deployed to all the provinces of Zimbabwe, and consultations with stakeholders, the SEOM issued its Preliminary Statement.

This statement is a summary of initial findings adopted after consultations with Member States who form the SADC Organ Troika, supported by advice from the SADC Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC), and with support from the SADC Secretariat. Therefore, the SEOM Preliminary Statement is a collective observation position of SADC Observers, Troika Members, SEAC, and the SADC Secretariat and not a subjective opinion of one individual.

The SEOM remains on the ground to observe the post-election environment and to prepare
and adopt a final report on the electoral process in Zimbabwe, still following the SADC
Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections.

SADC reiterates its call for the people of Zimbabwe to remain calm and peaceful and use the legal system in case of any dispute regarding the outcome of the Harmonised Elections. The SADC also calls upon all to exercise responsibility and decorum in how they express opinions regarding the electoral process and the SEOM in general.

“Its not the will of the people”: Kasukuwere

Former Zimbabwe Minister, during the late and former President Robert Mugabe cabinet, Saviour Kasukuwere says the election results do not reflect the will of the people of Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe Electoral Commission on Saturday night, declared Emmerson Mnangagwa the winner of Wednesday’s national elections.

Kasukuwere was disqualified from contesting the presidential position by the high court, and the Constitutional Court upheld the judgement by the high court.

He says the regional body, Southern African Development Community (SADC) declared the elections null and void.

“The results are pre-determined outcome especially how we have seen arrangements done in the beginning, were opponents were chosen and others disqualified in various strategies. We are not surprised because the region was saying that Mnangagwa must have a second term.”

“Zec’s skull-duggery and incompetence reflects how not to conduct elections”: Dr Stop It

    My Dear People

THE harmonised elections held on August 23, spilling into the next day were one of the most shambolic and embarrassing polls held in the country since independence in 1980.

It was a damning indictment of not only the incompetent Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec), but also the entire dispensation of darkness, poverty and confusion.

The Chigumba-led Zec combination of skull-duggery and incompetence is an advertisement of not how to conduct elections.

Even though we have always known that this commission is not fit for purpose, no one could have imagined that this outfit, stuffed with Zanu PF loyalists who include Duggish’s daughter, could plumb to such lows.

Delays in the delivery of ballot papers by up to 12 hours or in some cases not bringing them at all in mostly urban areas, which are opposition Citizens’ Coalition for Change strongholds, smacks of desperation to suppress voters.

Even blaming the delays on court cases around the elections is a load of cobblers given that it was known well in advance when the polls would be held and the number of voters in the various constituencies was public information.

The hollow excuse by Zec does not justify the issuing of inadequate ballot papers that soon ran out in some areas despite its knowledge of the number of voters.

Gushungo may have had his faults, most of which were greatly exaggerated, but never did he preside over such a catastrophic electoral process as the one witnessed under the auspices of the second repubric.

After Ngwena issued a proclamation to extend voting by another day in some wards, a befuddled Ziyambi Ziyambi could not even give clarity on whether the extended day would also be a national holiday.

He could only unhelpfully point out those who were voting on the day were “technically” on holiday, whatever the hell that meant.

All in all it was a major sham.

The measures taken by the coup cabal to avoid defeat to the Nero-led CCC amused and amazed in equal measure.

This included the laughable distribution of pamphlets with Nero’s picture on the day of the election urging his supporters not to vote as the elections were rigged.

It would have taken a certain kind of idiot not to see through this amateurish ruse.

Other measures were to have members of the shadowy FAZ setting up tables outside certain polling stations for “interviews” in a clear violation of the electoral laws as well as the foisting of candidates on the CCC party ticket to cause confusion.

However, all these silly tricks failed to prevent the defeats of the likes of Scott Sakupwanya, the self-proclaimed school dropout who thought he could win the Mabvuku constituency by shelling out thousands of dollars to bring famous retired boxer Floyd Mayweather.

Modi in Bulawayo was also retired after the chaos caused by Daggie in the MDC Alliance in 2018 gifted him a parliamentary seat.

Clearly, Bulawayo voters felt he should be given time off to run his supermarkets. kikikiki

    Munopengaaaaaa

The shenanigans also failed to halt the defeat of Mthuli in Cowdray Park.

Voters refused to reward Mthuli for worsening their poverty and misery with his bankrupt economic gymnastics. I laughed my lungs out when the ruining party sent a fulminating Chris to respond to the devastating blows thrown by one Nevers from Zambia on behalf of Sadc.

The cabal thought they could fool everyone by pretending that the sham election was free and fair, but this time they met indoda sibili from across the Zambezi. For once, Sadc summoned enough courage to tell the Lacoste group that stealing elections is now old fashioned. I am still enjoying watching them trying to recover from that killer punch.

    Munopengaaaa

My commiserations to Mr Bin, who lost a whopping US$6 700 and 1 500 fuel coupons of 20 litres each when his car was robbed in front of a five-star hotel in Harare.

However, one cannot help but think that as a former Finance minister, Mr Bin should know better than carry so much money around, especially when his party talks of the importance of putting money in banks and not under the mattress or in this case, in car seats.

That the huge amount of money that was stolen was hard currency and not the local currency his party introduced and exhorts that it be used shows the hypocrisy and duplicity of the Lacoste regime.

Mr Bin, who will always be remembered for officiating the opening of a dustbin complete with ribbons and scissors, has always blasted the United States for imposing sanctions on the country on his long-winding rants on micro-blogging site X formerly known as Twitter, but has no problem in using its currency instead of the Zimbabwe dollar.

Even his boss Ngwena, in a state of visible excitement, called the US dollar real money when he received funding from the US to assist those citizen affected by the devastating cyclone Idai.

The double standards of these political relics is nothing short of scandalous.

    Self Exiled Moyo Praises ZEC

Former cabinet minister Jonathan Moyo, who is currently in exile, has expressed admiration for the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) for successfully managing the country’s elections despite facing numerous challenges. Moyo commended ZEC for maintaining its integrity and serving the best interests of all Zimbabweans.

In an X post, Moyo emphasized the importance of fairness and impartiality in the electoral process. He criticized those who expected ZEC to align with their personal agendas, stating that a team that consistently harasses the referee in every match does not deserve to be part of the league. Moyo stressed that fair play is essential for every participant to have an equal chance of winning, regardless of their background or cause.

Moyo highlighted a specific instance where ZEC demonstrated its responsiveness and effectiveness. In a court case, ZEC vigorously defended the nomination of 12 parliamentary candidates against allegations of late filing. Moyo praised ZEC for its robust support, stating that without their intervention, these candidates would not have been able to assume their positions in Parliament.

Furthermore, Moyo recognized ZEC’s commitment to resolving issues that arose during the election. He commended the commission for taking responsibility for its mistakes, promptly addressing delays in the opening of polling stations and ballot paper shortages. Moyo appreciated ZEC’s willingness to acknowledge and rectify these issues, which he believed demonstrated a positive shift in the commission’s attitude compared to previous elections.

While acknowledging that some things did go wrong, Moyo argued that ZEC cannot be faulted for occasional errors. He cited Murphy’s Law, which states that anything that can go wrong will go wrong, but praised ZEC for taking responsibility and making genuine efforts to rectify the situation. Moyo asserted that ZEC’s responsiveness and willingness to apologize marked a significant improvement and a positive turning point in the commission’s performance.

In conclusion, Moyo expressed confidence that ZEC’s conduct in the 2023 election signifies a positive change and sets the stage for future improvements. He encouraged ZEC to maintain its responsiveness and continue enhancing its performance in conducting fair and transparent elections.

    FAZ Haunts ED

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s reliance on a shadowy organisation to spearhead his re-election campaign has come back to haunt him after foreign observer missions cited it as one of the plethora of things that marred the August 23 elections.

The Southern African Development Community (Sadc) led the stinging rebuke on the conduct of the polls as it flagged the role of Forever Associates Zimbabwe (Faz), an organisation believed to have links with state security organs.

Faz was accused of intimidating voters after it set up tables outside polling stations where it took down names of voters.

It was also in the forefront of Zanu-PF’s election campaigns where there were reports of intimidation and even violence against opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporters.

Mnangagwa is said to have turned to Faz to coordinate his re-election bid due to mistrust of internal party structures as divisions rocked Zanu-PF.

Sadc election observer mission head Nevers Mumba, who is also former Zambian vice-president, was unequivocal in his criticism of Faz operations.

“In previous stakeholder consultations, a shadowy organisation referred to as Faz was accused of conducting a countrywide exercise of electoral intimidation,” Mumba said.

“Our observers confirmed the existence of this group as its officials or agents were easily identifiable at some polling stations as they were dressed in regalia emblazoned with the Faz name and were accredited as local observers.

“These and other unidentified persons, who were not polling officials were also observed taking down the names of voters before they cast their votes.

“In some areas, voters were intimidated by the actions of these individuals.”

The European Union Election Observer mission (EU EOM) said the elections fell short of regional and international standards due to acts of violence and intimidation by Faz members.

“We noted that there was heavy presence of FAZ, which was allegedly recording details of those who were voting,” said EU EOM chief observer Fabio Massimo Castaldo.

“The EU Election Observation Mission concludes that curtailed rights and lack of level playing field led to an environment that was not always conducive to voters making a free and informed choice in Zimbabwe’s 2023 harmonised elections.

“The passing of regressive legal provisions and acts of violence and intimidation resulted in a climate of fear.”

The Commonwealth observer group also condemned the presence of Faz at polling stations.

“We observed, and received various reports, that an NGO called Faz had set up ‘exit poll survey’ tables in close proximity to polling stations, with governing party regalia,” the group said.

“From our briefings with other civil society organisations and stakeholders, it was made clear that exit polling is currently not permitted within the legal framework of Zimbabwe.”

The United Kingdom embassy in Harare said: “Observer missions also noted long delays in the opening of polling stations in some urban areas, as well as allegations of intimidation by the Zanu-PF-aligned Faz.”

A local think-tank, Zimbabwe Democracy Institute (ZDI) accused Faz of wanting to hijack electoral processes to rig the polls on behalf of Mnangagwa.

“Zanu-PF party deployed a quasi-military NGO called the Faz to infiltrate (the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, interfere with administration of elections and disperse manipulation and intimidation across the rural areas on behalf of Zanu-PF,” ZDI said.

“The deployment of state security apparatus is expressed through manipulation and partisan use of the military and shadowy security sector-linked bodies by Zanu-PF to achieve electoral victory.”

Zimbabwe Election Advocacy Trust executive director Ignatious Sadziwa said he did not see Zanu-PF disbanding Faz.

“Zanu-PF survives on dirty tactics and Faz antics fit well in their game plan,” Sadziwa said.

“I don’t think they will disband the outfit because of backlash from observers.

“They will rather endure presiding over sham elections at all costs as long as they stay in power.”

Political analyst Romeo Chasara echoed the same sentiments.

“The presence of Faz is a serious threat to the integrity of the elections,” Chasara said.

“I think it’s highly unlikely that Faz will be disbanded.

“It is going to be used to whip into line the rural people, so that Zanu-PF controls its strongholds where CCC has penetrated.”

On Friday, Zanu-PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa defended Faz as a duly registered ruling party affiliate group.
