By Staff Reporter- The High Court has granted bail to the controversial religious cult leader, Ishmael Chokurongerwa, popularly known as Madzibaba Ishmael, after spending almost two months in remand prison.

Chokurongerwa (54), who leads the Johanne Masowe Penyera Nyika sect, and seven other members of the sect, were arrested for allegedly violating the Burial and Children’s Act, respectively.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the High Court ruled that there was no longer any risk that Madzibaba Ishmael would interfere with witnesses, hence the decision to grant him bail.

Apart from an order to deposit US$ 1,000 with the clerk of court Norton Magistrstes’ Court, the High Court also barred Chokurongerwa from conducting any church gatherings anywhere until the matter is finalised.

He was also ordered not to interfere with witnesses directly or indirectly until the matter is finalised and to report to the police three times a week.

Chokurongerwa’s co-accused; Shingirai Ngawafune (42), Takavengwa Gwenzi (55), Zebedia Sigudu (49), Devlodge Katsande (47), Wonder Kabaya (41), and Siribinio Chikurunhe (53) were granted bail early this month by the Harare High Court. 

The trial for all eight individuals will commence on May 7, 2024, at the Norton Magistrates’ Court.

The State alleges that Chokurongerwa and his associates conducted funeral services for Hazel Chikunhire and Winlet Kabaya without obtaining proper burial orders for the deceased.

A Zimbabwe student, named Bathabile Meshia, has died in Poland, with the family launching a request for public assistance for repatriation of her body.

Meshia, who was 22, at Lublin public hospital after a short illness.

She was in her first semester at Vincent Pol University in Lublin where she enrolled for a Cycle Masters Studies in Physiotherapy.

Her programme was set to end 31 March 2029.

Meshia’s parents, according to her maternal aunt Thokozani Mguni who has launched a GoFundMe request, are both in Zimbabwe and “are devastated by the passing of their daughter”.

“They cannot afford the repatriation expenses, therefore appealing to the public to find it in their hearts to assist raise the funds,” Mguni said.

Her post-mortem, according to family, showed she succumbed to an undisclosed cancer in the stomach.

Those who knew her say Bathabile was a young, quiet and introverted, and most people did not know her.

Her family had invested all their savings paying for her University studies and cannot afford to repatriate her body.

Other students are trying to help by arranging and getting all paperwork to her family in Zimbabwe.

THE scourge of drug and substance abuse has become a thorn in the flesh in the fight against HIV and AIDS, as users are devising new ways of administering drugs into their system.

The continued use of drugs and substance abuse especially among adolescents, is reversing the strides that have been made by the country in tackling HIV and AIDS.

This comes amid revelations that a new phenomenon known as hotspotting or bluetoothing is rocking the streets of Zimbabwe as drug users are finding innovative ways of administering drugs into their bodies.

“Young people are finding new ways to administer drugs in their bodies. The latest one is injecting untested blood of a career that is high on drugs into their own system. Some go to the extent of sharing the same needle, hence while we are fighting drug abuse, we are now faced with the fight against drug and substance abuse as well,” said Dr Loveness Ndebele a psychiatrist.

Tendai Daka from Mubatirwapamwe says although injecting ones drug infused blood into another drug user is a fairly new phenomenon, it has become popular among people with limited means, looking for a quick fix.

On the afternoon of April 21, 2024, a devastating road traffic accident occurred along the Marondera–Igava Road, resulting in the loss of two lives and leaving four others injured.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident, which took place at approximately 1450 hours near the 15 kilometre peg of the road.

The accident involved a BMW X5 vehicle that was carrying five passengers.

According to reports, the vehicle veered off the road suddenly, heading towards the left side, before overturning and ultimately coming to rest back on its wheels.

The consequences of this tragic event were severe.

Two individuals lost their lives in the accident, and their bodies were transferred to the Marondera Hospital mortuary to undergo post-mortem examinations.

Meanwhile, the four survivors sustained injuries and were immediately transported to Marondera Hospital for treatment.
