The police confirms that Moyo was subsequently shot on the stomach by police officers and was referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals for treatment.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa accompanied by Vice President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga has paid condolences to the Director General in the President’s Department, Ambassador Isaac Moyo and his family, following the death of their daughter Shumirai on the 3rd of this month.

IN a script that sounds stranger than fiction, over 100 graves have been vandalised at Warren Hills Cemetery in Harare.

Whether ritual or criminal, the motivation behind this heinous act remains a mystery.

Margaret and Grace Chishawa are coming from the grave site to check on their parent’s final resting place after news filtered through on the goings on at Warren Hills cemetery in Harare.

“We are living in fear, what sort of human being can do this? Surely this is an act of Satanism,” said Margaret.

Grace added, “We are still in shock, everything that has happened is still very unbelievable.”

Acting on the grapevine, many rushed to the cemetery this Friday and as if to reassure their loved ones, they braved the scorching heat to spend the day seemingly playing the protection role for the departed.

“We are still fearful if these criminals will not come back and destroy more graves. We only hope that the long arm of the law will catch up with the criminals so that they can be punished,” said a family member, Mrs Maggie Machila.

“We do not know if this grave will survive, I am currently in a dilemma of what will happen tonight,” said one of the family members.

Graves are not the only victims of this vile act, as nearby businesses also suffered the evil hand overnight.

Florist, Mr Tazvigarira Karidza said, “I run a flower business and I woke up to find that most of my products had just disappeared only to find them recklessly disposed in a nearby bush. I can’t imagine what could have influenced this kind of attack because it happened the same night the graves were destroyed.”

Harare City Council Spokesperson Mr Stanley Gama revealed that investigations are underway, while security has been beefed up at the shrine.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa accompanied by Vice President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga has paid condolences to the Director General in the President’s Department, Ambassador Isaac Moyo and his family, following the death of their daughter Shumirai on the 3rd of this month.

Shumirai, who was based in Dublin, Ireland was a political activist and was also the founder of Youth Business League Zimbabwe.

The late will be laid to rest in Rutenga on Sunday.

She died at the age of 41 and is survived by two sons, Munyaradzi and Derrick.

By Crime and Courts, Reporter-Elleven Men have been arrested and appeared in court for kidnapping a Chinese business person in Harare.

The suspects also demanded a US$ 120,000 ransom from the Chinese businessman’s relatives.

Guo Zairen (34), Wang Gao (40), Primrose Miga (34), Charles Matondo (46), Tonderai Naison Kaja (34), Charles Notice (34), Christopher Chirombe (34), O’brian Miti (31), Simbarashe Kumba (24), Carlington Konselia (28) and Oswel Tinotenda Tsikai (29), were facing kidnapping charges when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi.

The State opposed bail, arguing the suspects could flee the court’s jurisdiction.

Investigating officer Detective Gentle Tapererwa said the 11 were not proper candidates for bail.

“Some of the accused persons exhibited signs that they are capable of fleeing if freed since they tried to escape from police officers,” he said.

Mr Mangosi deferred the matter to Monday for bail ruling.

The court heard that on April 17 at around 3pm, the suspects hatched a plan to kidnap the complainant and demand a ransom.

Acting in common purpose, five of the suspects and Tendai Notice, who is still at large, went to a Chinese restaurant in Belgravia driving a white Toyota Fortuner whose registration numbers are unknown, but was being driven by Guo.

They also had a Toyota Belta, whose registration number is also unknown, but was being driven by Tendai Notice.

The complainant, Cheng Song, was at the restaurant having lunch with his friend, Tu Muqing. Guo and Wang allegedly showed Kaja, Chirombe and Miti, the complainant who in-turn confronted him and introduced themselves as police officers.

The suspects then claimed that Cheng was under arrest, but did not notify him of his offence.

The court heard that the suspects handcuffed him and forced him into their Toyota Belta and drove away, leaving Tu Muqing behind.

The suspects took Cheng to House Number 1, Montenes Drive, Mandara, Harare, where Miga, Matondo, Kumba, Konselia and Tsikai were waiting for them.

Tu Muqing then phoned and informed Cheng’s cousin sister, Wang Yanan, that Cheng had been arrested by police officers.

Cheng sent his Google maps location to Wang Yanan, through a Chinese WeChat internet platform, seeking assistance from her.

Wang Yanan contacted Superintendent Victor Phiri of the Zimbabwe Republic Police and sought assistance to be escorted to the said police station.

It is alleged that Supt Phiri met with Wang Yanan and on checking the Google maps location, he discovered that it was showing a place in a bushy area adjacent to Chikurubi Maximum Prison and that there were no police stations closeby.

At that moment, Wang Yanan received a phone call on her WeChat platform from Cheng who told her that he was being held hostage by the suspects and that they were prohibiting him from using ordinary voice calls or the WhatsApp platform.

Cheng further told her that the suspects were demanding a ransom of US$120 000, which was to be delivered to them promptly to ensure he was not going to be harmed by them, and eventually be deported.

It is alleged that after about 15 minutes, the suspects used Cheng’s cell phone and contacted Wang Yanan and ordered her to drive to the Google maps location.

Supt Phiri alerted CID Homicide Harare of the kidnapping and extortion and they swiftly reacted and waylaid the suspects at the given Google maps location.

Charles Notice, Chirombe, Konselia and Tsikai arrived driving a Toyota Fortuner, registration number AEN 4346, and ordered Wang Yanan to follow their vehicle and they drove off at high speed.

Police detectives followed the suspects’ vehicle and drove along Arcturus Road, Greendale, and identified themselves as police detectives, before ordering them to pullover.

It is the State’s case that the suspects increased the speed of their vehicle in an effort to evade arrest, prompting police officers to fire warning shots, but they continued driving at high speed.

This resulted in the police officers firing towards the vehicle, leading to the driver losing control and plunging into a ditch. They were then arrested.

The court heard that the suspects led the police to House Number 1, Montenes Drive in Mandara where they found Cheng being guarded by some of the suspects.

He was then rescued by the police.

In a statement Shumba said opposition parties need to come together and approach the ruling party.

“We were happy that all opposition parties came and attend the independence celebrations addressed by His Excellency President Mnangagwa. This spirit must continue, we are all Zimbabweans we need to work together. We are not enemies we all want to see Zimbabwe prosper. Politics of denigrating national leaders is over.

“In the same spirit we are pushing for all opposition parties to unite and make sure that we help the government with one hand. There is need for mutual respect in opposition and no need for big brother mentality. We as opposition through unity Zanu PF will respect our voice, the ruling party cannot take disintegrated opposition seriously. We all need to respect that President Mnangagwa won the election and we engage him respectfully” Shumba said

Recently Shumba appealed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to call for an urgent Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) meeting in order to address the current economic challenges.

In a statement recently Shumba said other political party leaders must play a crucial role in addressing the economic challenges.

“I call upon President ED Mnangagwa to urgently consider calling back POLAD to share advises in tackling the economic challenges currently facing the country especially the runaway inflation, price instability and exchange rate volatility.

“While we applaud the appointment of the new reserve bank governor in accordance with the RBZ Act, we think the burden should not only be shouldered on him but should be spread to other political and economic players to urgently bring economic stability and help to achieve Vision 2030.
He added that with Polad is ready to put hands on the deck in a bid to help President Mnangagwa.

“POLAD is a tried and tested Institution which has proved itself during it’s engagement with the government between 2019 and 2022 where the economy was fairly stable as compared to the current situation where POLAD is no longer sharing political and economic notes with the government.

“There is danger of having the inflation running out of control if there is no broader engagement with all stakeholders. POLAD has proved itself despite unjustified criticism from the western sponsored political parties and it should be given another chance before the economy run out of control.”

Speaking after announcing his new cabinet last year, Mnangagwa said Polad remains a useful platform.

“The Polad platform was extremely useful, it was a platform where other political parties who participated in the 2018 general elections did not make it and through the Polad platform we were able to interact and exchange views across the board, on the entire framework of Government, and we were able to discuss without limitation.

“I thought it was a very good platform for Zimbabweans to come together and share. I think this platform will continue so that all the political parties that contested will come on board and we will continue the practice, it was very helpful from my point of view as President,” Mnangagwa said.

By Municipal Reporter- Suspected thieves Thursday invaded Warren Hills cemetery and vandalised at least 85 graves.

Nearby residents woke up to find the destruction and they have no idea who could have done it. In African culture, the desecration of graves or cemeteries is taboo of the highest order. 

Harare City Council spokesperson Stanley Gama confirmed the shocking incident and said investigations were still underway.

“Yes, 85 graves at Warren Hills cemetery were destroyed.

“We don’t know who did that but some few years back the same cemetery was destroyed and it was established that the person who had done  it was mentally challenged.

“So, even in this case, we are suspecting that the person who did this is mentally challenged as well.

“As of now, we have increased security and even brought on board those who are armed, we have also reported the matter to the police.

“Once the motive has been established we will give an update.” H Metro

ZANU PF bigwigs were left frustrated after the party denied them free fuel and accommodation for this year’s Independence Day celebrations held at Murambinda growth point in Buhera, Manicaland province.

However still enjoyed his full perks as the President.

Traditionally, central committee members of the ruling party have enjoyed various perks during national events including complimentary fuel and accommodation.

NewsDay gleaned a message that was sent to central committee members from the Zanu PF national headquarters through the party’s provincial offices before the  Uhuru celebrations yesterday.

“Central committee members are advised by the national transport department that there won’t be accommodation, fuel or bus fare refunds.

“Those willing to attend national events shall take advantage of the buses allocated to the province. Liaise with local district co-ordinators for pick-up points and routes,” the message read.

However, Zanu PF director for information Farai Marapira said there might have been a “glitch” for the bigwigs not to get fuel and accommodation.

“The party has always looked after its leadership. As with any programme a glitch may be here and there but not failure. We are not a party that fails its cadres.

“All central committee members and all other members are catered for professionally and fully,” he said.

But sources within the party told NewsDay that the decision was made due to budgetary constraints and the need to prioritise more pressing issues.

Zimbabwe has been grappling with economic challenges, including hyperinflation, unemployment and a severe shortage of foreign currency, which have strained the government’s resources.

While some see it as a necessary step towards fiscal responsibility and accountability, others view it as a betrayal of party loyalists who have supported Zanu PF through thick and thin.

Central committee members who spoke to NewsDay on condition of anonymity said they felt betrayed after working hard for the party to win elections last year.

Zanu PF leaders are known for lavish lifestyles, while the majority of the populace wallow in poverty.

A central committee report to the 7th Zanu PF National People’s Conference last year showed that the ruling party splurged millions of United States dollars on cars, party regalia and improving the welfare for its leaders.

The report stated that in 2017, before the late former President Robert Mugabe was removed from power, the party only had 45 vehicles.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has boosted the fleet to 531 — the largest in Zanu PF’s history.

The central committee report also revealed that the ruling party spent ZWL$1,8 billion and over US$4,8 million from January to September last year on staff salaries, gratuities, transport, health and allowances for party bigwigs among other expenses.

“In 2018, the Zanu PF party acquired an additional 438 new motor vehicles bringing the fleet size to 486,” the report read.

However, Zanu PF chief whip Pupurai Togarepi revealed that legislators were sleeping in cars because of lack of accommodation when they attend parliamentary business.

“I rise on a point of privilege after some perennial challenges that are facing Members of Parliament each time they come to the House. There is a challenge in terms of accommodation. MPs get desperate to a point where some sleep in cars and others are disturbed by the approach of some of the hotels,” he said.

Former Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa has mocked his colleagues who attended the 44th independence celebrations labelling them bubblegums which will be used and dumped.

In a cryptic message shared on X, Chamisa urged people not be like a bubblegum which is discarded after losing temporary taste.

Chamisa’s message followed wide condemnation of opposition members including Sengezo Tshabangu, Welshman Ncube, Charlton Hwende and others who attended the 44th Uhuru celebrations.

Chamisa has chosen to snub the celebrations which have over the years been held in a very partisan manner.

“Last week my admistration launched a new gold backed currency, the Zimbabwe Gold. This development will boost our confidence and pride in our own national currency and furthermore protect it from attack. Measures to encourage savings and excessive bank fees have been put in place. The suspects, Guo Zairen (34), Wang Gao (40), Primrose Miga (34), Charles Matondo (46), Tonderai Naison Kaja (34), Charles Notice (34), Christopher Chirombe (34), O’brian Miti (31), Simbarashe Kumba (24), Carlington Konselia (28), and Oswel Tinotenda Tsikai (29), faced intense scrutiny as they appeared before Harare magistrate Mr. Dennis Mangosi.

The courtroom was packed as Detective Gentle Tapererwa, the lead investigating officer, laid out the case against the accused. “These individuals are not suitable candidates for bail. There’s a demonstrable risk they might flee, evidenced by their previous attempts to evade police custody,” Tapererwa stated firmly.

During the proceedings, it was revealed that the elaborate plot began on April 17th. According to the prosecution, five of the suspects and one Tendai Notice, who remains at large, orchestrated the abduction of Cheng Song, a Chinese national, from a local restaurant. “The complainant was enjoying lunch when suddenly approached and unlawfully detained under the guise of a police operation,” the court heard.

The subsequent events took a darker turn when the suspects allegedly transported Cheng to a secluded house in Mandara, demanding a hefty ransom while holding him against his will. The situation escalated when Cheng managed to send his location to his cousin using a WeChat message, which prompted a police investigation.

Superintendent Victor Phiri played a critical role in the rescue operation. “Upon receiving the distress information, we acted swiftly. The alleged kidnappers’ mistake was using the victim’s phone, which allowed us to intercept and track them down effectively,” Supt. Phiri explained.

KWEKWE – A man is dead after falling from the rooftop of the First Mutual building in Kwekwe city centre on Friday morning. The incident caused a temporary halt to business activity in the Midlands province town.

The unidentified shirtless man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are investigating whether he intended to take his own life or if it was a tragic accident.

According to witnesses, the man was seen performing stunts on the rooftop, resembling those of the superhero Spiderman. A video circulating on social media shows him precariously clinging to the edge with one hand.

The situation turned fatal when he attempted to jump to a balcony on the third floor. He missed his target and fell, dying on impact with the ground.

The cause of the man’s actions remains unclear. Some speculate mental health issues may have played a role, while others suspect drug or substance abuse. Robbery Spree in Harare Results in Over $66,000 Stolen from Local Businesses

Two companies fell victim to brutal robberies that cumulatively resulted in a staggering loss of over US$66,000 and R71,000. The incidents involved a total of 12 armed assailants who executed their crimes with chilling precision earlier this week.

According to Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the National Police spokesperson, one of the robberies took place at a business situated along Seke Road. “This was a highly orchestrated attack. The robbers, armed with pistols, assaulted the security guard on duty, incapacitated the building’s security systems, and forcibly entered the premises,” Nyathi reported. The assailants made off with US$56,377 and R71,000, alongside other valuables including a laptop and a Samsung tablet.

A mere three days later, a second heist occurred at a wholesale outlet in Chitungwiza. “Another group of six perpetrators, also armed and using explosives, breached a safe at the wholesale, extracting US$10,507,” explained Nyathi. These crimes highlight a disturbing trend of increasing violence and sophistication among criminal gangs in the area.

By Municipal Correspondent- The Harare City Council has condemned more than 500 buildings, including about 14 high-rise towers in and around Harare’s central business district (CBD), classifying them as unsafe for occupation.

The city fathers said these properties have poor ventilation, lack emergency exits, and generally decay.

Over 500 abatement orders have since been issued to owners of the buildings, directing them to repair their properties or risk their closure urgently.

An abatement order is a legal document issued by a Government agency or authorised body to address a building nuisance or violation of regulations.
