Chinese Company Opens Mine in Gold-Rich Odzi Area

By A Correspondent| Chinese miner Ming Chang Sino Africa has commenced operations at its new gold mine in Manicaland’s Odzi area about 30km outside Mutare after pumping in millions in United States dollars to procure new equipment.

The company partnered locals to extract gold on the lucrative deposits where 60 have been employed since commencement of operations in May.

Mine director Liu Xialong said the company has 16 claims and it is currently working on one of them.

“Indications are that these are very good deposits and the mine life is quite long. We are prepared to invest millions on this project, but I can’t give you the specific numbers at this stage, ” Xialong said.

The mine hopes to employ an additional 60 permanent workers in the stage 2 of the project.

The long term plan will be to increase local employment numbers to at least 100 which will take the total staff compliment to a minimum of 300 workers.

Investments in Manicaland’s Odzi area has recorded heavy losses amid reports that workers were siphoning fuel from excavators, trucks and storage tanks at the site.

The Chinese owned company reported the matter to local police leading to investigations which unearthed a well elaborate scheme that management said could have cost the company 10 000litres of diesel since operations started.

At least three employees resigned earlier in September during police investigations while others simply ran away when they got wind that the net was fast closing in on them.

Xiaolong told this publication that the culprits drained diesel from excavators, trucks and two on-site fuel storage tanks whose combined capacity is 50 000 litres.

“Over 1000 litres was stolen every month and this puts us to at least 6 000 litres and maybe it can even reach 10 000 ” Xialong said during a tour of the mine.

“It took an internal audit which looked at the traditional use of fuel using similar new trucks for the same kind of work. We looked at log books and found serious discrepancies. For example, excavators which used to be 25l per hour on peak have now reached 40l per hour.

“At the same time, our average fuel consumption per hour is plus or minus 20l yet it has shot to at least 25l per hour. We investigated and caught some workers draining fuel which is then sold to small-scale gold miners in the area, Police investigations confirmed that fuel was being stolen and action was taken.

After disciplinary proceedings and tightening of internal controls, consumption for the excavators had slid significantly to between 16 and 18 litres per hour.

“Some suspects remain on the mine because we could not catch everyone involved or prove allegations but the new system is working, ” he said.

Set Us Free From Central Govt Interference, Mafume Begs

Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume has demanded autonomy of local authorities saying there is need to be set free from central government interference.

Addressing delegates during a discussion to raise funds for the Matobo and Insiza by-elections by the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC Mthwakazi) at the weekend, Mafume said there was need to create zones of autonomy for local authorities.

“The problem we have with the Local Government ministry is the level of pettiness and level of wanting to direct things at local authorities. They use money without consulting us, and enter into agreements on behalf of Harare City Council,” Mafume said.

“They have taken the power stations, they don’t pay royalties. They took roads and vehicle licensing, but we don’t have royalties, they took many other functions that were supposed to be ours, but they haven’t done well on us. It’s a very bad relationship.

“What we need is to restore executive powers, restore devolution and allow the local people to determine their destiny like water. We need greater autonomy for our cities to make decisions, to be able to function properly in a modern society.”

Mafume accused the Local Government ministry of being petty and vindictive, thereby making it difficult for local authorities to properly function.

“The role of devolution should be to remove the supervisory role of the ministry, and probably make it a co-ordination role whereby we can co-ordinate areas of mutual convergence and are strictly governed by the law, and areas where there is need of compliance with the whole nation. We should get somewhere regardless of the fact that we are not in full control of the State.”

Mafume also bemoaned the collapse of the 2009-13 government of national unity (GNU) which he said contributed to national development.

“Had it continued for some time while these other old nationalist guys retired, we could have created a generational consensus which would have allowed the country to be on a better footing. Unfortunately it was all erased when the GNU collapsed and we went back to propaganda politics trying to run a country through sloganeering, which has led us into the mess we are in now,” he said.

Contacted for comment, Local Government minister July Moyo said there was nothing called total autonomy.

“In our jurisdiction, there is nothing called complete autonomy. That is why the Constitution is very clear that we have three tiers of government and they (local authorities) are the third tier; which means in a lot of things they have to report to government,” Moyo said.

Dispute Over Price Of Honda Fit Escalates Into Near Gun Shoot

A Bulawayo man pointed a gun at another following a dispute over the price of a Honda Fit fuel pump.

Police on Twitter, said Emmanuel Charuka (30) was arrested last Wednesday.

“The ZRP warns firearm holders against abusing firearms to settle scores. On 05/10/22, Police in Bulawayo arrested Emmanuel Charuka (30) for pointing a firearm. The suspect pointed a 9mm pistol at Maxwell Tshabalala (39) at a car parts shop in Kelvin Northgu after disagreeing on the price of a Honda Fit fuel pump. The Police have since recovered the 9mm pistol registered in the suspect’s name,” posted the police.

A firearm amnesty was issued between August 8 and September 30 and Police said 538 firearms and 260 rounds of ammunition had been surrendered across the country.

Thereafter police said a search of premises will be conducted where suspected illegal firearms are being kept. Those found with unlicensed firearms will be prosecuted.

The amnesty was granted in terms of Article 12 of the Southern African Development Community (Sadc) Protocol on the control of firearms, ammunition and related materials.

The primary objective of the Sadc Protocol is to prevent, combat and eradicate the illicit manufacturing of firearms, ammunition and other related materials.

It also seeks to regulate the import and export of legal small arms and thus curb the transit of these weapons into and within the region.

Police said they suspect some members of the public are still in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

This has led to the abuse of firearms in the country in clear violation of the provisions of the Firearms Act.

Checks and records, the police said, have revealed that some companies have closed yet their representatives are still holding onto firearms while hunters and individuals are no longer in the same position that they were when they applied for firearm licenses.

Zanu PF Mash East Province Burning

Discord has rocked the Zanu PF party in Mashonaland East province, with reports of divisions in the provincial executive.

This paper is reliably informed that some top party officials have accused the provincial leadership of heavy-handedness and making wrong decisions on crucial matters.

Provincial chairperson Daniel Garwe recently told a provincial co-ordinating committee in Marondera that he is aware of a plot to oust him.

“Let me take this opportunity to tell you that I am aware of the plots against me. I hear that some are mulling to sign a petition against me, but that will not work. I will not stop executing my duties and campaigning for President Emmerson Mnangagwa,” Garwe said.

At the same meeting, party official Jerry Gotora told the gathering that Garwe was voted into power and could only be removed by the same process.

“Chairman (Garwe), you should not be worried about that (petition). You were voted into power by us, and you can leave that position through the same process. You are the chairman continue with your work,” Gotora said.

In the past few months, Garwe announced the suspension of two district co-ordinating committee DCC chairpersons, Alfred Pedzisa (Chikomba) and Israel Maliki (Murewa), accusing them of incompetence and insubordination.

Maliki, who has since been replaced by Murewa DCC secretary for education Wellington Kademeteme is yet to appear before a disciplinary hearing.

Provincial disciplinary committee chairperson Kudzai Majuru yesterday confirmed the suspension of Maliki but could not divulge more details.

“I confirm that he was suspended and is set to appear before a disciplinary hearing,” Majuru said.

Pedzisa was suspended at an inter-district meeting held at Sadza Growth Point before being replaced by Transport minister and Chikomba Central legislator Felix Mhona.

Mhona is also the provincial secretary for administration.

Pedzisa has since appeared before a disciplinary hearing and is waiting for the verdict.

The sacking of Maliki and Pedzisa has brought discomfort within party members with reports that more DCC chairpersons are set to be suspended.

Urgent Attention Should Be Paid To Electoral Reforms: Welshman Ncube

Urgent attention should be paid to electoral reforms on voter registration, transparency of the voter’s roll, and the right of political parties to freely campaign, Professor Welshman Ncube has said.

Prof Ncube, a senior leader in the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), said Zimbabwe should put its attention on these pressing problems, as only a few months are left until dates for the 2023 national elections are set.

His remarks follow the CCC’s unveiling of the Pre-Election Pact on Electoral Reforms (PREPARE), which calls for electoral reforms before next year’s elections.

“As provided in the constitution, voter registration must be continuously accessible to people. This thing of saying that outside the outreach programme, you can only register at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) offices like in Bulawayo is wholly unacceptable. It means people have no effective access to voter registration,” he said, lamenting the lack of transparency in the entire electoral process.

Prof Ncube noted that despite talk on the delimitation of constituencies, the process was still not implemented.

“So far it has been opaque. There’s been no transparency, time is running out and the things that should be done publicly have not been done,” lamented the law expert.

He cited how the media coverage was still unfair despite the constitution and Electoral Act having adequate law for both private and public media to fairly cover elections.

“We know the state media is far off the legal imperatives of what it should be doing,” said Prof Ncube.

The constitutional law expert bemoaned how the security apparatus, particularly the police, exhibited questionable behaviour yet the law specified how their conduct should be.

“The law is never followed,” said Prof Ncube.

“The role of the police must be neutral and keep the peace but it’s not happening”

The CCC leader claimed there was widespread abuse of legislation that requires police to be notified of meetings.

“Police have been insisting over the years that the obligation to notify them is in fact a different obligation altogether, that it is an obligation to apply for their permission, not the law. All of these things need to be attended to,” he said.

The CCC leader also decried how the law was inadequate when it came to the counting and transmission of election results, particularly for the presidential election as opposed to the local and parliamentary elections.

“People ought to see results that came from polling stations, see the collation of results at a particular ward, constituency, province in real life so that there is no contestation over the actual result,” he said, bemoaning how Zimbabwe continuously moved from cycle to cycle of disputed elections.

“The moment you have disputed elections you will have legitimacy issues. If ever you are a government where the majority of people don’t believe it is there by virtue of their sovereign right or that they put that government there, that government will never have the moral and political authority to lead effectively. Hence you continue to have the characteristics of a failed state, a failed economy, politics and a failed everything.”

Prof Ncube cautioned that if some of these issues are not resolved ahead of the 2023 elections, Zimbabwe would have “a palpably unfair and unfree election.”

“No one will be convinced about the outcome and resultantly the government is never going to be able to change the fortune of the country,” he said.

“So it is important for all parties to recognise that it might be late but there is an urgent need for genuine sincere dialogue over some of these issues. It is important to talk about these things, time is of the essence.”

The CCC leader acknowledged the ruling Zanu-PF party would always be reluctant to engage in genuine electoral reforms “because they have never been a democratic party.”

“They have never accepted the sovereign right of people to select a government of their choice. They believe that by virtue of their participation in the liberation struggle, people have obligation to vote for them but people don’t vote for them,” he said, noting how Zanu-PF resorted to violence against people as retribution for rejecting them.

“This is why you saw the signs all over the country, the construction of no-go areas in the rural areas. They believe that they own the electorate and no one else other than them should have access and those who exercise their sovereignty then get visited by violence in order.”

Prof Ncube emphasised that resorting to violence, threats and withdrawal of government services in order to coerce people to hold a particular political opinion or vote in a certain way was undemocratic.

“As CCC, we must continue to prepare and overwhelm Zanu-PF in an election, notwithstanding the absence of electoral reforms and machinations they will engage in order to defeat the sovereign right of people to elect a government of their choice,” he said.

Job Sikhala, Godfrey Sithole Defiant On Prison Experience

Incarcerated Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislators Job Sikhala (Zengeza West) and Godfrey Sithole (Chitungwiza North) yesterday said the tough conditions at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison had strengthened their resolve to fight for a better Zimbabwe.

The two legislators and 14 party supporters have clocked three months in remand prison after being denied bail five times by the courts. They face a charge of inciting violence in Nyatsime, Chitungwiza, following the brutal murder of fellow party activist, Moreblessing Ali.

In a statement through their lawyer Freddy Masarirevu, the legislators said their ordeal in remand prison was a reflection of the pain that Zimbabweans were going through under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime. They claimed that their detention was politically motivated.

“Fellow Zimbabweans, we feel your inner pain because of what we are currently going through behind these dark walls of Chikurubi Maximum Prison,” the legislators said in a statement.

“We cannot hide the fact that we have suffered for the past four months. As humans, there is a certain amount of pain and suffering we can endure.

“A lot has happened during our incarceration which we strongly feel is unjustified, and most importantly, unlawful as it violates the fundamental pillars of constitutionalism and the rule of law. We cannot express enough of our resentment and indignation at the manner in which our cases have been handled.

“We remain resolute. We reiterate that we did not commit any crime. We are here because of our will and commitment to a better Zimbabwe. We continue to appreciate the work our legal team is doing. They have our full support.”

Govt Frustrates ‘Restless’ Nurses Intending To Leave Zim For Greener Pastures

Government has reportedly stopped issuing clearance letters for nurses in a bid to frustrate them from leaving the country for greener pastures.

This follows mass resignations that have hit the country’s public hospitals as health professionals migrate abroad for better salaries and working conditions.

In March, government doubled application fees for nurses’ confirmation letters and certificates from US$150 to US$300.

Official figures show that last year alone Zimbabwe lost nearly 1 800 nurses, mainly to Britain. That’s more than 10% of all the nurses working in public hospitals.

An email sent to a nurses’ union leader from the United Kingdom Nursing and Midwifery Council seen by NewsDay, revealed that the government was blocking nurses wishing to travel abroad.

“We have received notification that the Zimbabwe government has taken a decision to withhold issuing verification of qualification and character for its nurses who wish to join our register,” the letter read.

“In response to this, we are currently exploring ways in which we support applicants including alternative options where possible and whether they will provide the same assurance as verification from the nursing council.”

Health ministry spokesperson Donald Mujiri directed questions to Health Service Board chairperson Paulinus Sikhosana, who said he was not the right person to comment on the issue.

“My department doesn’t deal with that issue.  You can call the ministry secretary,” Sikhosana also said.

A health expert, who requested anonymity, said although nurses were prepared to pay for verification letters, government had refused to budge.

“A lot of nurses have paid for their verification letters, but nothing is happening, they are not being approved. Government is continuously taking people’s money but not approving the qualifications. We are urgently asking the government to answer all this. We need dialogue,” the nurse said.

“This is a very serious issue where the Ministry of Health risks international isolation. The email was sent by the UK government and this will cascade to other European countries and this is not good. Verification of qualifications is supposed to be done by the Nurses’ Council but the current administration changed it. It said it wanted to approve, which is, therefore, not its duty according to an Act of Parliament. So it is violating the law.”

ZACC Arrests Mining Director For Abuse Of Office

Mashonaland West acting provincial mining director Sibongile Mpindiwa has been arrested for allegedly unlawfully forfeiting mining claims, changing ownership and then handing them over to other people.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission crack team swooped on Mpindiwa yesterday and she is expected to appear at Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court today facing four counts of criminal abuse of office.

ZACC spokesperson Commissioner John Makamure last night confirmed the arrest of Mpindiwa, who was being held in police custody at Chinhoyi Police station.

It is alleged that on February 22 2019, Mpindiwa, being the acting provincial mining director for Mashonaland West, issued a mining certificate to Frank Siyankuni for Ruvengo 13A and 13B on Stockdale Farm Chegutu.

The mining claims belong to Dallaglio Private Limited which was issued a mining certificate for the same mining area in 2005 and this certificate was never cancelled.

According to the charge sheet, Mpindiwa allegedly contravened the Mines and Minerals Act, which deals with the registration of mining blocks and requires that all due procedures must be followed before rejecting claims or signing certificates.

In addition to this, Mpindiwa allegedly acted contrary what was expected of a provincial mining director whose duties include supervising support staff at provincial level, overseeing ministry policies, and co-ordinating and maintaining best practices in the province.

Her actions were in apparent show of favour to Siyankuni and disfavour to Dallaglio Private Limited, said ZACC.

On the second count, it is alleged that on June 5 2019, Mpindiwa forfeited Victory 286 Bright Mine Syndicate of Verbluden of Dunphaile Farm registration number 41092 which belonged to Correct Dube.

The following year, on September 25 2020, Mpindiwa revoked the same mine from forfeiture and issued it back to Correct Dube. By so doing, Mpindiwa allegedly acted contrary to her duty by showing favour to Correct Dube at the expense of Micah Mashiri and other individuals on the waiting list.

Her actions were allegedly in breach of the Mines and Minerals Act which clearly states that revocation of such mines should be done within 21 days from date of forfeiture. In the case in question, revocation was done after 15 months, according to ZACC.

On the third count it is being alleged that in February 2021, Mpindiwa issued someone identified only as Kwaramba with a prospecting licence to mine at Strathmore Farm which is located in Banket.

The farm is allegedly reserved for the mining promotion corporation, a Government exploration company under EPO 07/2019 but the blocks for Kwaramba are situated right under that exclusive prospecting order.

In this case, Mpindiwa again acted illegally. According to ZACC, she should have rejected the application for a

prospecting license since the area in question was under EPO 07/2019.

On the last count, Mpindiwa is alleged to have revoked Zurich Mine’s registration number 268 and 269 under revocation invoice number 063213B on June 4 2021. Zurich Mine had been issued its certificates on September 11 2006 and these were forfeited in September 2011.

Mpindiwa allegedly revoked Zurich Mine’s two registrations 10 years later after Zurich had forfeited the mine. She is being accused of acting contrary to her duty by showing favour to Hardwork Berah, who received the new licences, and disfavour to Athanas Ranjeni and other applicants on the waiting list.

By so doing she contravened the Mines and Mineral Act which requires that such revocation can only be done within 21 days from the date of forfeiture.

Commuter Carrying 19 High School Pupils Overturns, Three Hospitalised

19 Drake High School pupils cheated death after a commuter omnibus they were travelling in overturned and landed on its roof, leaving three pupils hospitalised.

Three pupils sustained serious injuries and are admitted to Kwekwe General Hospital.

Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the accident which happened last Thursday along Zisco Road.

“Martin Tofa (23) was driving a Toyota Hiace towards Redcliff CBD with 19 pupils from Drake Secondary School. Upon reaching Zisco Plant where there is a steep uphill, the vehicle rolled back and hit the edge of the road with its rear fender before overturning and landing on its roof,” he said.

As a result, the pupils sustained varying injuries and three of them are admitted to Kwekwe General Hospital. Police appealed to members of the public to adhere to all road traffic regulations and exercise caution when driving.

In another incident, a Zhombe man died after being attacked by a machete wielding gang that pounced on a gold milling centre in Zhombe.

According to police, on Sunday at around 0100hours at a milling centre near Zhombe East Business Centre, a four-member gang armed with machetes, axes and iron bars, pounced on a gold milling plant.

They attacked people demanding cash and other valuables.

“The now deceased Mr Emmanuel Ushe (58) was in the company of his two sons aged 14 and nine at a hammer mill waiting for their ore to be processed when the assailants pounced on them demanding cash,” said police.

Mr Ushe was attacked by the assailants and left lying in a pool of blood.

He later died from the wounds.

The men also force-marched the two children to a nearby homestead where they forcibly opened doors and assaulted everyone using an axe and iron bars demanding cash.

“They were given an undisclosed amount of cash before they ransacked the house and took cellphones before disappearing into the darkness,” said Inspector Mahoko.

Police are appealing for anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects to contact any nearest police station.

CCC, Zanu PF Youths Fight For Vending Stalls In Mbare

Violent clashes between marauding Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) and Zanu-PF youths at the weekend left a trail of destruction at vending sites near Mupedzanhamo Complex, one of the busiest areas in Mbare, Harare.

The groups were fighting for control of the area where they charge and collect US$5 from each vendor.

Police confirmed the arrest of 13 people over the skirmishes.

The battles, the latest having started Saturday, have left many of the vendors fearing a gloomy year ahead as Zimbabwe gears for crunch 2023 general elections.

The usually overpopulated area was unrecognisable by its silence and emptiness, the few people who were visible were either peeping from mounds of rubble and broken tables or carefully passing by to avoid a beating by anti-riot police officers out in full force.

With little to no business since Saturday, one second hand shoes vendor said they now feared hunger could stalk them if the battles do not cease.

“This situation might persist up till after the 2023 elections, what this means is that we are going to go for the greater part of the next year battling to survive,” said the vendor who could not share his name.

“All I know is that youths from the CCC and Zanu-PF are fighting, but do not have the details as to why they are doing so.”

Zimbabwe Republic Police’s (ZRP), though the area seemed peaceful when the NewZimbabwe.com crew arrived, was accused of indiscriminately beating residents of Harare’s oldest suburb whenever these incidences erupted.

File Image: anti-riot police were called in to stop the clashes

“Their fights have, however, resulted in victims that have nothing to do with them as the police do not choose or ask when they descend on Mbare to stop the violence, they beat everyone,” said one vendor.

“The police just invade our stalls and start beating us. I am getting used to this, I am now used to being beaten by the police whenever the clashes start.

“I have a dislocated finger after l was hit with a baton stick on my forehead and have had a headache since Saturday. One of the officers stomped on my stomach with his boot and was beaten all over my body using their baton sticks.”

Two trucks full of anti-riot officers were strategically parked at corner Remembrance Drive and Roden Street. Another blocked traffic from accessing Mbare flats at the intersection of Remembrance Drive and Cripps Road.

Police barricaded the road with broken tables and stones which had been used during the running battles, while others patrolled the area.

Vendors have ‘historically’ but ‘illegally’ been charged between US$3 and US$5 per day for use of stalls (tables) by both Zanu-PF and CCC and the battle for control of the space in question seems to have reached a crescendo.

They have resulted in the permanent closure of Mupedzanhamo Flea Market, a popular spot for second hand clothes and shoes, as none between the two allows the other to take control of it, besides being council property.

Council has failed over past years to effect order and reclaim its property.

“The youths are fighting for vending stalls (tables) littered around the Mupedzanhamo and within the flats,” said another.

“These battles started when CCC youths set up tables around the Zanu-PF district offices near Block 1, the Zanu-PF youths then demanded that they be pulled down but that was resisted.

“Zanu-PF youths then began to target vending stalls from which CCC youths were collecting US$3 per day. They burnt them overnight and started these battles which have stopped all business here.”

Though Mbare remains an opposition stronghold, Zanu-PF has been equally powerful in determining who gets what, where in relation to space.

The Murahu hitmaker has already confirmed the concert through a video drop that has since gone viral on several digital platforms.

“Hello everyone, this is Makhadzi, please catch me live at Kadoma, Odyssey Hotel in Zimbabwe, October 22, I am coming,” she said.

Monica Mutsvangwa Urges Media To Give Equal Coverage To All Parties: Is She For Real?

Media houses should provide equal coverage to all political parties in line with the Second Republic’s mantra of leaving no one behind, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa has said.

Addressing multi-stakeholders including political parties and media personnel from various media organisations during a Media and Elections Reporting Workshop here in Kadoma this morning, Minister Mutsvangwa said the media had a paramount duty of disseminating information to the public.

She said the Government’s policy is for the media, particularly state media to communicate information regardless of political affiliation adding that a media blackout on political parties is an editor’s decision.

The media was challenged to communicate information that was not divisive but that which promotes peace and tolerance.

Citizens for Coalition Change (CCC) secretary general, Mr Charlton Hwende implored the media to report fairly.

In his remarks, Zanu-PF’s Information and Publicity Secretary, Christopher Mutsvangwa said the revolutionary party was advocating for peaceful polls during the 2023 harmonised elections.

MDC Alliance’s Paulina Mupariwa requested for a media that would report freely and professionally.

The workshop organised by Zimbabwe Institute is open to political parties that have representatives in parliament.

Mashonaland West Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mary Mliswa-Chikoka and Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister, Kindness Paradza are also in attendance.

ZESN Endorses By-Elections Where Zanu PF Thrashed CCC

Elections watchdog, Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN), has endorsed the recently held by-elections in Mberengwa and Nyanga as credible.

The verdict flies in the face of main opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) claims that the outcome was not a reflection of the people’s will due to violence and intimidation.

Over the weekend, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) conducted by elections in Mberengwa and Nyanga to fill the vacant seats.

Opposition party, CCC fared dismally as they were walloped in the two elections by Zanu-PF.

In the aftermath of the rural district elections, CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere rang alarm bells over the plebiscites, alleging violence and intimidation of voters in the build up to polling day.

“We’ve consistently said that each by-election is a dry run for 2023. We’re keenly aware of the assisted voting, political violence, banning of CCC meetings and voter intimidation that took place in Mberengwa and Nyanga. Zanu-PF will never win a free and fair election in Zimbabwe.

“We’ve begun our post-mortem review of these elections to examine how to sharpen our response to electoral manipulation in these areas. We have a model of how to win rural elections that has worked in places like Binga and Bulilima which we are scaling across the country

“As we work on the heavy lifting to ensure a big win in 2023, we continue to push hard for electoral reforms as we strengthen our mass mobilisation programme. We must register to vote, turn out to vote in our millions and defend the vote so we win Zimbabwe for change in 2023,” said Fazayi Mahere in a series of twitter posts.

The opposition has on numerous occasions accused ruling party of manipulating election results in its favour.

Recently the party launched a blueprint titled Pre-Election Pact on Electoral Reforms (PREPARE) which contains electoral reforms demands ahead of 2023 elections.

However, ZESN ruled the Mberengwa and Nyanga by elections as free and fair without any irregularities, casting doubts on the claims by CCC.

“Campaigns for the by-elections were mostly political rallies, door-to-door as well as the distribution of flyers and posters. There were no incidents of violence or intimidation that were reported in both wards.

“The polling day political environment was generally peaceful with no instances of political tensions and violence being reported.

“Both Zanu-PF and CCC deployed party agents to track the polling process at all the polling stations ZESN observed and visited by the roving team.

“ZESN commends the two political parties for the comprehensive deployment of party agents to monitor the voting process on polling day. This affords them an opportunity for first hand observation of the process, enabling them to authoritatively comment on all processes,” said ZESN in a statement.

Govt Says Gold Coins Have Mopped Up ZWL$10 Billion From Parallel Market

Government says gold coins introduced in July this year have mopped up close to $10 billion from the parallel market.

This comes as President Emmerson Mnangagwa claimed that Zimbabweans have an appetite for gold coins, hence government will introduce smaller coins next month.

“The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has sold over 10 000 gold coins for about US$15 million. This means Zimbabweans have an appetite for gold coins and to save. Our target is to release US$30 million worth of coins.

“By mid-November this year, the RBZ should be in a position to unveil smaller denominations of gold coins, whose value will range from a tenth, a quarter, to half of an ounce,” Mnangagwa said in his weekly column in the State media.

Analysts, however, say the introduction of smaller gold coins will not assist the country’s economy to grow as government needs to support the ailing productive sector more to achieve economic growth.

Analyst Effie Ncube said while gold coins might temporarily slow down inflation and reduce pressure on the exchange rate, they would not address the economic crisis in the country.

“The introduction of smaller denominations of gold coins is not going to address the economic crisis in the country. There is need for more holistic and comprehensive measures to turn around the ailing economy,” Ncube said.

Finance ministry spokesperson Clive Mpambela said the gold coins were effective in stabilising the exchange market.

“The gold coins were effective in the sense that they removed about $9,7 billion from the market which probably would have ended up chasing foreign currency. The small coins will be half an ounce or a quarter of an ounce,” Mphambela said.

“The impact of removing $10 billion is equivalent to removing close to $100 billion of purchasing power which would otherwise be chasing foreign exchange. That $10 billion is equivalent to between $70 billion and $100 billion on a velocity basis. Indeed, the gold coins have contributed a lot to the stabilisation of the exchange rate.

“If you think about the circulation of $10 billion in the economy, it has a multiplying effect. The gold coins, therefore, immunised or sterilised that money. That, therefore, stabilised the exchange rate in addition to other initiatives by the government including the value for money initiative,” he added.

Economist Persistence Gwanyanya said in the face of increased instability, gold coins were a viable alternative to restore the value of local currency.

“The timing of the issuance of these smaller denominations is important as it coincides with increased local currency liquidity from bonus payments. This will address the concern that the product was designed for the elite,” Gwanyanya said.

Another economist Busisa Moyo said: “Zimbabwe is an underrated leader in this transformational change. Gold provides an alternative store of value to reserve currencies such as the United States dollar which have been volatile of late.”

Mnangagwa’s government took an unprecedented step of introducing gold coins as legal tender after inflation spiked from 191% in June to 257% in July this year.

By- The police have arrested 13 people in connection with the Friday violent Mupedzanhamo clashes that claimed one life and left several injured.

The Friday clashes were sparked by alleged space barons who wanted to take over the running of Mupedzanhamo in Mbare.

One of the space barons collapsed and died at a city hospital from injuries sustained when he was hit on the head with a wooden stick in the skirmishes.

LaptopGate Probe Fails On Quorum

An investigation by the Public Accounts Committee (Pac) into the controversial awarding of a laptops and desktop computers tender to companies that overcharged Parliament was yesterday postponed due to lack of quorum by Members of Parliament.

Yesterday’s meeting was supposed to grill members of the Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe for alleged breach of procurement processes by the committee.

“We were supposed to hear from the Ministry of Finance as well as suppliers of those tenders, unfortunately due to some unforeseen circumstances we were hoping that members of the committee would be around, but we have decided that we may have to postpone this hearing to next Monday so that the members will all be here,” Pac acting chairperson Edwin Mushoriwa said.

Pac is investigating a case where Parliament authorised a tender for the supply of 173 laptops valued at US$9 200 each, but were deemed over-priced by the Finance ministry.

Leaked official documents show that Blinart Investments P/L won the tender to supply Parliament with 173 laptops for US$1 602 755, 77, translating to US$9 200 per gadget. Another company, Mid-End Computers and Hardware, won a tender to supply 79 desktop computers to Parliament, pricing its gadgets at above US$3 000 for a single machine.

The controversial tender was cancelled by Parliament after a public outcry over the flawed tender process. -Newsday

Sikhala Judge Loses Car Battle

State Media – High Court Judge Erica Ndewere last week had her appeal against the High Court decision ordering her to surrender her operational vehicle flopped after the matter was struck off the roll.
The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) wanted to seize Ndewere’s service vehicle after she was fired from the bench for gross incompetence.

High Court judge Justice Samuel Deme had ordered Ndewere to surrender the vehicle to the Sheriff for safety until her application contesting her dismissal from the bench was concluded.

Deme also directed the Sheriff to seize the Mercedes Benz vehicle if Ndewere refuses to voluntarily surrender it.

The JSC had sought a High Court authority to repossess the vehicle following her dismissal.

But Ndewere appealed against Deme’s ruling at the Supreme Court, but a three judge-panel of Justices Antonio Guvava, Nicholas Mathonsi and Felistus Chatukuta unanimously agreed to have the appeal struck off the roll.

In her court papers, Ndewere argued that she was entitled to purchase the vehicle in terms of her employment contract.

Ndewere argued that her colleagues who were allocated vehicles on the same day with her have been allowed to purchase their cars.

Ndewere was removed from the bench by President Mnangagwa on June 17 2021 over misconduct allegations.

She, however, had retained possession of the Mercedes Benz E300 registration number ADY 474, which is registered in the name of the Master of the High Court, a former department of the JSC.

Her request to purchase the Land Rover was granted on April 9, 2021. But the JSC demanded the return of the Mercedes Benz on April 19 2022, and Ndewere allegedly refused to do so.

Ndewere insisted that she was entitled to purchase the vehicle, arguing that the JSC was not the owner of the vehicle, but the office of the President.

She also argued that the request by the JSC was done unlawfully. Herald

Madhuku: We Will Stop Zanu PF From Winning Polls

By A Correspondent| National Constitutional Assembly leader party Lovemore Madhuku said his party was working to ensure that Zanu-PF did not win in the upcoming election.

In an interview with a local daily, Madhuku said his party had put in place strategies to ensure Zanu PF does not win next year’s elections.

“We have put in place so many strategies to ensure that we achieve that. But obviously, we will not disclose our strategies,” Madhuku said.

This followed claims by the ruling party that it was being infiltrated by opposition members.

“You also have those who have been disqualified because there (was) additional information to the point that  probably they are not in good standing in terms of their activities and some who might not really (be) moving with us, who might probably be Zanu-PF during day and opposition during the night. So, there are cases like that where you need experts to assist us to make a better assessment,” Bimha said at a Press conference on Friday ahead of the party’s central committee elections that were held on Saturday.

“The condition, which can worsen over time, would put Enock at an extremely high risk of suffering a potentially fatal cardiac event, if he were to continue playing competitive football,” Brighton said in a statement.

Brighton chairman Tony Bloom said, “We are all absolutely devastated for Enock. He and his family have had a traumatic few weeks and while we are just thankful he has come through that period, he has seen such a promising career cut short at such a young age. – Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Zanu PF Agents Bash Journalist

Zimbabwean journalist Godwin Mangudya was yesterday allegedly assaulted by members of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and ruling Zanu PF activists in the Harare’s Kuwadzana suburb, while covering the party’s Central Committee elections.

Mangudya alerted MISA Zimbabwe that he was assaulted by members of the ruling party and CIO despite formally identifying himself and producing his duly constitutionally-accredited Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) press card.

In a statement, The Zimbabwe chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa said he was detained for more than an hour, while the Zanu PF activists continuously agitated to further assault him.

MISA Zimbabwe said CIO agents and Zanu PF security personnel confiscated his mobile phones and reset the gadgets leading to the journalist losing both his personal and work-related information.

The previous day, Mangudya, was among the journalists who attended a press briefing at the Zanu PF headquarters in Harare, addressed by both the party’s spokesperson, Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, and political commissar, Mike Bimha.

ZANU PF invited members of the media to cover its activities country-wide.

Meanwhile, during the entire ordeal, Mangudya requested the CIO and party activists to reach out to the party’s spokesperson and commissar for them to confirm that journalists had indeed been invited to cover the activities of the party, but that was all in vain.

“MISA Zimbabwe notes with very great concern the continued perpetration of violence against journalists by political party activists, security personnel, and members of the national security. This violence against journalists undertaking their constitutional mandate is an assault on the supreme law of the land as provided for under Section 61 of the Constitution which protects media freedom. Sadly, these unpunished crimes against journalists, come at a time when the entire world is commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists.

“We, therefore, call the on the police to conduct thorough investigations and hold the perpetrators accountable. As MISA Zimbabwe, we are now very worried by this upsurge in the number of criminal attacks against journalists as Zimbabwe moves towards its elections next year. The role of journalists in covering political parties’ activities is to allow the public to access reliable information and make informed decisions and choices.”

MISA Zimbabwe urged all stakeholders to unite and speak with one voice in calling for an end to “these criminal acts against journalists and ensure that media workers are protected to perform their constitutionally guaranteed duties without fear and risk to their personal security. AC Milan Bury Juventus

AC Milan beat Juventus 2-0 in a Serie A Matchday 9 encounter played at San Siro on Saturday.

After a cagey start, Milan came close to open the scoring in the 20th minute after Rafael Leao’s ball hit the post.

The visitors got a chance to to grab a late consolation when Moise Kean’s long range effort was tipped over by goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarasanu.

International Day of the Girl-Child | IThemba For Girls Trust

Statement: IThemba For Girls Trust joins the world in commemorating The International Day of the Girl-Child with the theme “Our time is now-our rights, our future”. The day was established to highlight injustices and challenges that girls continue to face throughout the world. The vulnerability of girls continues to increase as their safe space is shrinking with a rise in sexual abuse, in schools, homes, churches and anywhere in the communities.

In Zimbabwe, the vulnerability of girls has been increasing ever since the Covid-19 lockdown. Many parts of Zimbabwe especially in the rural communities have experienced increasing cases of Child Marriages, Teenage Pregnancies and girls dropping out of school. Those who continue going to school experience “Period Poverty”. Some of the factors that promote such is the increasing poverty at household level due to continued economic problems in the country. Informal mining activities in the rural communities have contributed immensely to teenage pregnancies and some religious sectors promote child marriages. Household poverty reduces access to clean sanitary pads and as a survival strategy they either use unhygienic methods to control the flow (which might have long terms effects on their health) or they stay at home during menstruation days (which negatively affects their academic attainment). Teenage pregnancies pose a health risk to the young bodies that are not mature enough to deliver safely. With our poor health delivery systems and some religious sectors that do not

allow members to seek for medical attention, reports of girls dying at childbirth have been increasing which is worrisome as very little response is coming from the government.

As our theme this year says “Our time is now-our rights, our future” it is clear the future of girls lies in the completion of their education. Therefore, they should receive enough support for them to complete their education. Which means Girls Rights have to be respected through Ending Child Marriages, implementing The New Education Act which allows pregnant girls to continue attending school and girls accessing sanitary pads, Menstrual Health Management (MHM) and Hygiene Education that will help dignify their menstruation.

We would like to appeal to the government to put in place measures that are going to increase the security and protection of girls. Religious Sectors that promote child marriages should be banned and perpetrators brought to book. Communities should proactively create safe environments for girls. The government introduced a policy for Free Sanitary Pads in schools and even budgets for such, but the disbursement policy is not clear. Up to now we do not know which schools qualify for such help, when and how it’s done. But what we know is that girls remain faced with “Period Poverty” and in dire need of assistance.

It is only through promoting the education for girls that we can end Child Marriages and promote community development that is likely to reduce generational poverty.

Madam Boss Auctions Seke House, Leaves Hubby’s Girlfriend Homeless

By-Comedienne and socialite, Tarisai “Madam Boss” Chikocho and her husband are selling the “defiled” Seke house, H-Metro has established.

The house in question accommodates Evangelista Ngonidzashe Zhou, Madam Boss’ husband Ngoni’s pregnant girlfriend.

The selling of this house could leave the pregnant lover homeless.
Ngoni has, however, promised Evangelista alternative accommodation.
“Ndakutengesa stand iyoyo ndiite zvimwe totsvaga pamwe pekuti ugare panemvura,” reads part of messages sent by Ngoni to Evangelista.
In her reply, Evangelista urged Ngoni to be strong.
“But try to be strong Ngoni ndinoziva wakaremerwa, tese takaremerwa, but iwe ukadaro ndozoita sei?
“Munoita zvakakusunungukirai henyu matowana munhu wacho arikuida here?”
Evangelista vowed not to leave the Seke house and this could have forced Madam Boss and Ngoni to put it up for sale.
Sources close to Evangelista disclosed that one Seke resident informed Madam Boss about the former’s stay at the house, which led to the clash.
Reports claimed Madam Boss took her Mercedes Benz from Ngoni.
It has also been reported that Ngoni has also been staying with his parents since the clash last week, which exposed his shenanigans.
One of Ngoni’s sisters told H-Metro that Ngoni failed to swallow his pride.
“I hope Ngoni will come to his senses and swallow his pride and seek forgiveness.
“Madam Boss is loving and had been a family pillar of strength that we cannot allow the devil to wreck this marriage.

“We will not tolerate Evangelista at all and that is why we wanted her to be evicted from the house.
“Ngoni failed us as a family.”
In a family meeting, Ngoni said Evangelista could pay rentals to the new house owner once they get one. H Metro

Zanu PF Top Officials In Trouble For Admiring Chamisa

By-Zanu PF has announced that it disqualified some of its senior party members from partaking in the just-ended Central Committee elections on the allegations that they had links with the opposition CCC.

These reports come amid power struggles and disgruntlement among senior party officials ahead of the elective congress later this month.

Zanu PF political commissar Mike Bimha said the party had roped in “experts” to assess the loyalty of its members suspected to be working with the opposition.

Speaking at a Press conference on Friday ahead of the party’s central committee elections that were held on Saturday, Bimha said:

You also have those who have been disqualified because there (was) additional information to the point that probably they are not in good standing in terms of their activities and some who might not really (be) moving with us, who might probably be Zanu PF during day and opposition during the night. So, there are cases like that where you need experts to assist us to make a better assessment.

In an interview with NewsDay, Bimha said disqualifying suspected disloyal members was one of the measures that had been put in place by the party to deal with the problem of infiltration but he would not disclose the names of those fingered.

He said Zanu PF was not worried by the G40 cabal but by the opposition parties in the country.

Political analyst Eldred Masunungure said the alleged infiltration was a confirmation of the fissures within the ruling party. Masunungure said:

Disloyalty among the ruling Zanu PF members has been rumoured for a long time since 2018 in the aftermath of the coup that ousted (the late former President Robert) Mugabe.

This points to the general disgruntlement of the party members against Mnangagwa’s leadership. It could be a reincarnation of another Bhora Musango.

Masunungure added that the opposition parties are not good at counter-infiltration. He is also of the view that infiltration could be orchestrated by the G40 working together with CCC just to destabilise Zanu PF.

18 Escape Death In SA-Zim Bound Bus Inferno

By-Eighteen (18) passengers were lucky to be alive Monday morning after a Harare-bound BM Transport bus they were traveling on caught fire on the outskirts of Masvingo city.

All the passengers and the crew managed to escape from the bus unharmed but various goods were destroyed.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by unknown flammable substances.

By the time the fire brigade and police arrived at the scene of the incident, the bus had already been reduced to a shell.

However, the bus crew and the passengers retrieved some of the goods from the boot of the bus and also removed the trailer.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Masvingo Province Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said the cause of the fire had not been established. He said:

The cause of the fire is still unknown but we suspect there were some flammable substances in the bus that might have triggered the fire.

Investigations are ongoing and we are still to establish the value of goods burnt in the fire.

The incident happened around 2.30 am when the bus that was carrying 18 passengers and driven by Mr Samkwazi Mabhawa from South Africa to Harare caught fire.

The bus was reduced to a shell by the fire but no one was injured. All the passengers and crew escaped unhurt.

The cause of the fire is still unknown but we suspect there were some flammable substances in the bus that might have triggered the fire.

Investigations are ongoing and we are still to establish the value of goods burnt in the fire.

Insp Dhewa said some passengers noticed smoke coming from the back seat where some goods were stashed.

They alerted the driver who stopped the bus but by that time the fire was spreading. | The Herald

Diego Costa Tears Into Conte

Diego Costa has taken a swipe at his former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte, blaming the Italian for his exit from Stamford Bridge.

Costa spent three successful years at the Blues, scoring 59 goals through 120 appearances while helping team to two Premier League titles and a League Cup triumph.

In the summer of 2017, the striker was informed by text that his services were no longer required.

The 34-year-old is still disappointed at how his first stint in England came to a close.

“I’ve never had a problem with the fans,” said Costa.

“My problem was not with the crowd, it was with that coach.

“I left on bad terms with that manager, I left a champion for the second time, and he didn’t count on me.

“That was nothing I could do. I had to leave. Today showed that I did not leave on bad terms with the fans.

“It’s very special. It’s the feeling that in the time that you spent here, you did good work and left good memories.

“Chelsea fans always treated me very well. I was always surprised by the way they treated me. It’s satisfying.”

Meanwhile, Costa made his first start for Wolves but was largely ineffective as they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat by Graham Potter’s Chelsea.

Despite the performance , Costa received a standing ovation as he walked around the pitch after being taken off in the second half.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

I Am Not Hanging Boots- Kuda Mahachi

Warriors star Kuda Mahachi says his football career will continue once he clears his name from the child abuse allegations he is facing.

The former Orlando Pirates star is being accused of scalding his 4-year old son Diego with boiling water, leading to third degree burns.

The case is before the courts and Mahachi, whose contract at SuperSport United was not renewed because of the saga, hopes one day justice prevails for him to concentrate on reviving his career.

“It has been a challenging time for me. However, I pray and hope the courts will do justice on the matter. It has been six trying months for me but I still believe my God will do me well. I have been on the sidelines but I still believe my legs can still carry me,” Mahachi told lifestyle tabloid B-Metro.

He added: “I’m not hanging up my boots soon. It takes courage but I admit things have never been the same for me,” added the dimunitive winger.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Real Madrid Edge Stubborn Getafe

Defender Eder Militao’s early header gave Real Madrid a low-key 1-0 win at Getafe on Saturday to move them back up to the top of the LaLiga standings.

Militao scored the winner in the third minute, ghosting between several defenders to head home from close-range from a corner by Luka Modric.

Yet despite their early breakthrough and a dominant performance, Madrid were unable to break down Getafe’s defensive wall and extend their lead.

Playing at Getafe has often caused trouble for Madrid, who were winless in their two previous visits to the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, having failed to score in both matches.

Madrid, who bounced back from dropping their first points of the campaign in a disappointing home draw against Osasuna last weekend, moved on to 22 points, three ahead of rivals Barcelona who have a game in hand and will host Celta Vigo on Sunday.

“Our goal today was to win and keep the pressure now over Barcelona,” Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal told Movistar Plus.

“We always want to score more, but the good thing today was our effort in defence.

“To not concede a goal was really important and helped us to get to the objective that was get back to winning ways.”

After conceding a goal in each of his first seven starts for Real Madrid, goalkeeper Andriy Lunin kept his first clean-sheet for the Spanish giants.

After the early goal, Real piled on the pressure.

Rodrygo, who played centre forward in place of Karim Benzema, who was rested by Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti ahead of next weekend’s El Clasico against Barcelona, was the focal point of Real Madrid’s attack.

“The clean sheet is very important,” Ancelotti said. “The success we had last year was because the defensive aspect was very good, and tonight as well.

“It was a different game, with a lot of long balls, Militao and [Antonio] Rudiger did their jobs, [Aurelien] Tchouameni too.

“It’s important like every game. The Clasico is still far off, we have another game first. I’ve rested some players like Benzema and [Ferland] Mendy. On Tuesday I’ll rotate a bit more.”

Rodrygo missed a great chance with a close-range header and Modric, who was returning after missing two games with a hip injury he suffered on international duty with Croatia, fired a bullet-shot wide from the edge of the box.

Real Madrid were also denied a penalty just before the break, when Vinicius Jr was fouled inside the box but a VAR check spotted that the ball had gone out on the left touchline in the build-up.

Rodrygo shot wide immediately after the break and, two minutes later, Getafe goalkeeper David Soria made an incredible stop to deny a bullet-strike from Tchouameni from inside the box.

The Brazilian had a goal ruled out a few minutes later after the VAR decided he was narrowly offside.

The pace of the game dropped as Real controlled possession and a helpless Getafe defended with 11 men in their own half.

Getafe have lost two straight games and are 16th on seven points, two above the relegation zone.- ESPN

Build Church Infrastructure, Indigenous Leaders Urged

By Tafadzwa Muranganwa| A number of indigenous churches worship under trees and open spaces which has turned off many young congregants, President of Council for Churches in Africa(CCA) has noted.

Speaking at the Zion Apostolic Faith Ministries gathering in Lilfordia ,Zvimba East ,CCC founder Bishop Dr Rocky Moyo urged indigenous churches to embrace modernisation and invest in church infrastructure.

“Let’s have our own church buildings, we are in the 21st century and our young folks are deserting us because they can’t stand being exposed to the vagaries of weather because we worship under trees,”Dr Rocky Moyo challenged.

Dr Rocky Moyo

He further said indigenous churches should take a leaf from yester year churches like Roman Catholic and Anglican which built schools and hospitals.

“Look how churches like Roman Catholic and Anglican boasts of schools and hospitals .Nothing can stop us to build our own, we just need to be organised ,”he added.

The CCA leader pledged to support the Zion Apostolic Faith Ministries to honour their late founding leader Tirivangani Mudhimbo Chademana by building a school named after him.

“It will be ideal to have a school named after your late founder Tirivangani Mudhimbo Chademana and as Council for Churches in Africa(CCA) we are willing to render support so that his legacy lives on ,”he pledged.

The late Tirivangani Mudhimbo Chademana died in 2019 and currently his son ,Philemon ,is the interim leader of the church as he awaits bestowment.

The church was delighted that Ernest Ruzayi , councillor for Ward 25 ,Zvimba East constituency where the church is headquartered said he was ready to assist it to acquire a stand for the school.

“This land is under the Ministry of Lands and what I can do is to facilitate for you to get a stand for the school by simply writing a letter to the ministry, “said the councilor who is also a proud owner of Afrobank Group of Schools.

Speaking at the same event ,CCA vice president Bishop Lameck Chitope urged the congregants to register to vote.

“Let us remind each other that we need to register to vote , it’s our democratic right to do so as congregants ,”Chitope urged.

Meanwhile, the Council for Churches in Africa will be conducting a workshop from 11-14 of this month to help out indigenous churches to put in place succession policies that will be backed by church constitutions.

“I am inviting some of your church leaders to a workshop we will be conducting from the 11-14th of October which will be on succession policy .There is the need to make sure your succession is laid out in the constitution so we avoid the feuds that arise when a church leader dies,”announced CCA leader who was flanked by his wife, Prophetess Faith Moyo who heads the Women Fellowship.

The interdenominational organisation is also involved in a number of philanthropic works of assisting vulnerable groups like orphans and widows with food relief and income-generating programmes.

Hwange Villagers Rescued From Eviction

High Court Judge Justice Evangelista Kabasa has stopped the arbitrary eviction of more than 100 villagers in Hwange, which was meant to pave way for the establishment of a motor-racing course and which could have displaced them from their ancestral land and ruin their livelihoods.

Stelix Civils had been granted a lease agreement by Hwange Rural District Council and was allocated land for the purposes of developing a Formula One grade motor racing course and proceeded to fence off 500 hectares of land in an area which villagers of villagers of Chibode, Kachecheti and Nemananga wards use as grazing area for their livestock.

The motor racing course was to be constructed on land that the villagers use as grazing land and also use to sustain their livelihoods.

In the application, the villagers argued that their livelihoods would be affected as a result of the development of the racing course and they would not be able to survive in their villages.

The villagers argued that they were not consulted and were not offered alternative land and hence Stelix Civils’ conduct amounts to arbitrary eviction, which violates provisions of section 74 of the Constitution.

After being aggrieved by the decision of Hwange Rural District Council, the more than 100 villagers in three villages of Chibobe, Kachechete and Nemangwe engaged Josephat Tshuma of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, who on 16 November 2021 filed an application at Bulawayo High Court to review the decision by Hwange Rural District Council to allocate 500 hectares of land to Stelix Civils as the proposed project was taking away a large chunk of their communal land and effectively taking over their grazing area.

On 15 September 2022, Justice Kabasa ruled that the decision made by the local authority to allocate 500 hectares of land to Stelix Civils was unlawful.

The High Court Judge stated that Hwange Rural District Council had no authority to allocate land to Stelix Civils to establish a racing course.

Accordingly, Justice Kabasa set aside Hwange Rural District Council’s decision to grant a lease agreement to Stelix Civils for the construction of a racing course and declared that any actions and conduct that had been taken by the local authority following the granting of a lease agreement to Stelix Civils, are invalid.

Newsday Reporter Barred From Covering Zanu PF Central Committee Elections

Journalist Desmond Chingarande of NewsDay was on 9 October 2022 reportedly barred from entering the venue of the ruling ZANU PF’s Central Committee elections at Masvingo Teachers College in Masvingo.

Chingarande said he was barred from entering the venue on the basis that he is a NewsDay journalist while other journalists from the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), the state broadcaster, were allowed entry.

He also reported that the security officers who denied him entry said they had been given strict instructions not to allow NewsDay into the venue.

MISA Zimbabwe position

Journalists should be provided equal opportunities to receive and impart information as provided for by the Constitution regardless of the organisations that they work for.

This is of great importance during elections as this enables citizens to access information from diverse sources for informed decisions and choices.

MISA Zimbabwe urges all stakeholders, including political party leaders and their supporters, the Police, the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, and the Zimbabwe Media Commission, to ensure that media freedom, media independence and diversity are promoted and protected at all times.

Journalists should be enabled to cover all political events and election-related events freely and without fear.

Incomplete Airport Road: Sharpe’s Lies Exposed

OVER a dozen applications challenging the transfer of vast tracts of land in a prime Harare residential area to a company behind the construction of Airport Road despite the project being incomplete have flooded the courts.

Harare City Council transferred 273 299 hectares of land in Borrowdale’s Pomona area to Augur Investments, which is owned by businessman Ken Sharpe for the construction of the road that was supposed to connect the Robert Mugabe International Airport to Harare’s central business district.

Only a small fraction of the road was constructed before the government cancelled the Augur contract due to non-performance, but the land had already been parcelled out to the firm.

This publication has in recent weeks published a series of stories based on court cases, which detailed disputes between Sharpe’s companies over the land and legal challenges against a deed of settlement signed between the Local Government ministry, Augur and council that appeared to give the land developer and his associates a form of immunity against prosecution over the deal.

In one of the court applications awaiting judgement, Fairclot, which is trading as T&C Construction and was subcontracted by Augur Investments, said it had identified several shelf companies that it believes are linked to Sharpe and that were used to hide the land under dispute.

Fairclot says authorities were not supposed to transfer the land to Augur because it was held as security pending payment as part of the contract for construction of Airport Road.

The original title deeds for the land known as stand number 654 Pomona measuring 273 299 hectares is still held in escrow by Fairclot’s lawyers  Coghlan, Welsh and Guest, who have refused to release them until Augur settled its debt with its clients.

West Properties, one of the companies owned by Sharpe, last week came out guns blazing against The Standard and accused the paper of publishing “factual inaccuracies and incorrect information.”

“The article contains falsehoods in stating that our CEO Mr Sharpe siphoned land from the Harare City Council through various entities,” read a letter of demand from West Properties in response to the story headlined “How Harare lost vast tracts of prime land for incomplete Airport Road.”

“However, the allegation is untrue as Mr Sharpe neither owns the entities and the land, which is held by such entities.

“The article misleads members of the public into thinking that there is active litigation against Mr Sharpe over the Airport Road deal of which there is none.”

Correspondence between some litigants, including Fairclot and court records obtained by The Standard, however, proved that there is active litigation against Augur Investments and shelf companies that are allegedly linked to Sharpe’s firm over the Pomona land.

Fairclot alone has over six active court cases against Augur over the Pomona land.

The firm is represented in the cases by Mutumbwa Mugabe and Partners as well as Tendai Biti.

The lawyers also represent land developer George Katsimberis in another case challenging the deed of settlement that gave Augur the right to the property.

Fairclot had managed to attach the property over the US$5 million debt owed by Augur after winning an arbitral award, which Augur failed to overturn at both the High Court and Supreme Court.

Local Government minister July Moyo also tried to recover the title deed for the property from the lawyers after the signing of the deed of settlement without success as shown by one of the correspondences in our possession.

“Please be advised that Augur Investments OU (Augur) and Fairclot Investments (Private) Limited, trading as T&C Construction signed an agreement on the 25th of March 2013 wherein, we were appointed escrow agents with the duty to hold the title deed in issue in trust,” part of the letter to George Magosvongwe, then permanent secretary in the Local Government ministry by T.A  Chiurayi from Coghlan, Welsh and Guest dated July 7, 2019 reads.

“We are, therefore, unable to release the title deeds to you without the consent of both Augur and T & C.

“Please find attached a letter from T&C lawyers objecting to the release of the title deed to you.

“That noted we regret to advise that we are unable to comply with your request as contained in your letter dated the 5th instant.”

This was after Magosvongwe wrote to Coghlan, Welsh and Guest demanding that they release the title deed following the signing of the deed of settlement.

In another letter to Moyo, Mutumbwa Mugabe and Partners wrote: “Honourable minister there is, therefore, more than ample justification for you to decline to comply with Clause 3 of the consent. It was certainly given in error.

“There are no grounds for you to order Coghlan Welsh & Guest to release the security they are holding on behalf of our client.”

Augur claimed that it had settled the outstanding debt with interest to Fairclot using the one to one rate to the United States dollar, in line with SI33 of 2019.

The case in which Fairclot is challenging this is still active in court.

Fairclot is also challenging the decision by the deputy Sherriff of the High Court, Mcduff Madega for transferring the Pomona property “without following proper procedures.”

Madega transferred the land despite objections from Fairclot’s lawyers.

Fairclot wanted Augur to pay the US$5 million using the existing bank rate.

There are also summons under case 4599/19 which seeks an order to declare stand 654 Pomona and the 17 others executable.

Case 3828/22 seeks to interdict the sale of Pomona and stands among the many cases filed by Fairclot.

Biti is also challenging the deed of settlement and transfer of 654 Pomona to Doorex Properties.

Augur was controversially awarded the contract on May 30, 2008, without going to tender.

The company was supposed to construct the Airport Road with an understanding that 90% of the costs would be paid in the form of land and 10% in cash.

Augur went on to subcontract Fairclot, which withdrew all its equipment and stopped work on the road after doing 2.7km of the 10km due to non-payment.

Tobacco Buyer Clashes With Farmers Over Delayed Payments

Voedsel Tobacco International, one of several firms contracting farmers to grow the golden leaf, has clashed with clients after delaying payment.

In a video message to farmers last week, an official said current protests in Iran triggered payment problems with a key company in that country.

Voedsel, according to its website, is licensed with the Tobacco Industry Marketing Board (TIMB) as a Class A buyer.

The licence permits the company to buy tobacco in Zimbabwe for export.

Videos sent to this newspaper showed farmers picketing at the home of one of the firm’s managers demanding their dues.

The manager was forced to call one of the firm’s directors, Innocent Mahufe, who said payments were being processed.

“Without farmers, Voedsel is nothing,” he told the farmers through a call.

“I am back in the country because boss Munya said come back. It pained me to hear that farmers are stranded. Someone said their child has died. I sat down with my staff and I explained this to them. There is a problem with one of our clients in Iran, there are protests there, which have affected our payments,” Mahufe said.

“When we found out that there was a problem, we quickly paid out all the RTGS [real time gross settlement] payments.

“Your money is safe and secure. You will get it. We are looking for other ways of finding the money to pay you.”

The Voedsel boss was not picking calls when NewsDay Farming reached out to him.

One of the Voedsel directors, Tennyson Hwandi, did not respond to written questions sent to him by NewsDay Farming via WhatsApp three weeks ago.

In an interview with NewsDay Farming, one of the affected farmers said: “We sold our tobacco to Voedsel at the beginning of June this year and according to the way they were paying, we were supposed to get our money a week later. They only paid us the RTGS portion and are left with the United States dollar portion. Now three months down the line the US dollar portion hasn’t come in.

The central bank said in February that tobacco farmers would be paid 75% of their sales proceeds in foreign currency.

The remaining 25% would be paid in the local currency, converted at the prevailing auction exchange rate on the day of sale.

“We have tried following all the official channels (including approaching) TIMB. I went to TIMB and was given the number of the person handling the issue. At first the official said Voedsel had promised to start paying mid-August. Now he is saying the Voedsel officials are ignoring TIMB calls,” another farmer said.

“If you call Voedsel accounts department they either lie that the money will come next week or if they recognise the number they block it or do not answer it. If you use a different number they answer, once you ask about payment they never answer that number. That is the same issue with the Voedsel management,” the farmer said.

TIMB spokesperson Chelesani Moyo said farmers should get hold of their inspectorate department for assistance.

“All non-payment issues must be formally communicated to TIMB and for all those who have done so we have managed to assist them to get their payments,” Moyo said.

Musindo Abused Us, Victims Speak Out

By A Correspondent| Popular cleric and Destiny for Africa Obadiah Musindo’ s sexual abuse victims have vowed to open up on the escapades of the religious leader.

Speaking to this publication one of the victims who requested anonymity said she became a ‘sex slave’ of the controversial religious leader since when she was 18.

“I was introduced to the Reverend by one of my mother’s friends at a time when I was about to write my O Level exam. By that time, my mom was struggling to pay my exam fees so her friend told us Rev Musindo could help us out.

“Indeed, he paid my exams fees and promised to fund my A Level studies in the case I passed,” narrates the girl who hails from Mutare.

She however, failed her O Level studies but the Destiny for Africa Network director would then offer to help her find work in Harare.

“He claimed he was well-connected and would help to find employment in Harare. I left Mutare and never thought he had bad intentions.

” I didn’t have any relative in Harare and found myself booked at this hotel(name supplied) for quite a good time. It is during my stay that he would frequent my room in guise of appraising me on employment and one day she forced himself on me,” she sobs.

She says from there Musindo would bed and pamper her with gifts. However, she was also being ‘hired out’ to other public figures.

“He came and told me openly that if I needed more money I had to consider sleeping with some of these politicians.

“He gave me an example of Pokello as someone who is living large because of sleeping with ‘madhara’, “she added.

Another victim said she was infected with an STI after being coerced to sleep with Reverend Musindo while at a tertiary institution.

“So when I was in my third year at Poly, my parents were struggling to pay my tuition so one of my friends facilitated that I meet Reverend Musindo.

“He seemed helpful but soon he started sending some sexually explicit messages to my phone and I told my friend who said the only way to payback for the tuition fees was to sleep with Reverend,” said the woman who requested anonymity.

“What bothered me he didn’t want to use protection and I ended up contracting an STI. ” He did send me money for medication but I am fearful that I may be infected by the dreadful virus now, “reveals the woman.

If the women are willing to give their accounts, Musindo could be yet another cleric to be sentenced for abusing women mostly church congregants.

Of late Musindo has been in the eye of a storm for extoting ordinary citizens mostly ZANU PF members.

Mnangagwa Purges Party Big-Wigs Over Chamisa

Mash-West Dumps Mnangagwa

By-Zanu PF supporters in Chegutu East facing evictions have said that they would dump President Emmerson Mnangagwa for the opposition in the 2023 elections.

About 300 families allocated land in Chegutu may be displaced to make way for a proposed platinum mine for a Chinese firm.

Most plot holders are retired civil servants who depend on small-scale farming.

The disgruntled villagers held a meeting at Hopewell farm in Chegutu, where they blamed Mnangagwa for their possible displacement. One of the villagers said:

Even he (President Emmerson Mnangagwa) if we are evicted, the election is coming, who will vote for him, how will he win the election?

Will the Chinese vote for him? Will one person make him win? They cannot support one corrupt person at the expense of hundreds.

We fought for this land, and you cannot tell us to leave, where do you want us to go as old as we are?

Hurumende ngaiticherechedzewo, murombo haavigwi ari mupenyu munotoumirira kuti afe.

We suffered for this land and our pain cannot go in vain because of one person.

Another plot holder who spoke during the meeting expressed dismay over the development. He said:

Yes, we fought the whites and they left, now fellow blacks are fighting us, we cannot be fighting each other.

Thousands of Zimbabweans across the country have been displaced to make way for big business as the “Second Republic” apparently shows scant regard for local people’s right to land.

SA-Zim Bound Bus Burnt To Ashes

By-A BM bus traveling from South Africa has been burnt to ashes in Rhodhene Masvingo.

The Mirror reports that the bus caught fire this morning (3am) after a suspected gas leak.

“Most goods burnt. As Masvingo Firebrigade brings the tanker without water,” the Mirror reports, “passengers are angry”.

Mnangagwa Caught Red-Handed

By- Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has exposed Zanu PF’s new rigging tactics the ruling party plans to use in the 2023 elections.

Chamisa said these rigging tactics included harassment and intimidation of voters in rural and newly settled areas.
Chamisa, who recently launched an electoral reform blueprint dubbed Pre-Election Pact on Electoral Reforms (PREPARE), said the State should guarantee the safety of rural people during elections and ensure that they exercise their right to elect leaders of their choice. He tweeted on Saturday:
Title and security of tenure guarantee true freedom and the right to vote for citizens in rural and newly settled areas.
Without this, citizens in these areas are vulnerable and exposed to incessant abuse by desperate politicians. True independence is about the freedom to vote freely.
Chamisa also raised concern over the issue of “assisted voting” where literate people seek assistance to mark ballots in fear of being accused of voting for the opposition. Said Chamisa:
Command voting or assisted voting is a unique type of repression-a new form of apartheid deployed by unpopular politicians targeting vulnerable communities.
The right to vote is inadequate without the full freedom and independence to exercise it.
CCC launched “Mugwazo” in an attempt to penetrate rural areas which are perceived as traditional ZANU PF strongholds.

President Chamisa Denounces Command Voting

Tinashe Sambiri|CCC leader, President Nelson Chamisa, has challenged the Zanu PF regime to stop abusing rural voters.

According to the CCC leader, Zanu PF is stealing polls through command voting.

President Chamisa said in a statement on Twitter:

“TITLE & SECURITY OF TENURE guarantee true freedom & the right to vote for citizens in rural & newly settled areas.Without this, citizens in these areas are vulnerable & exposed to incessant abuse by desperate politicians.

True independence is the about freedom to vote freely !

Command voting or assisted voting is a unique type of repression-a new form of apartheid deployed by unpopular politicians targeting vulnerable communities. The right to vote is inadequate without the full freedom and independence to exercise it.”

Haulage Truck Knocks Down Chinhoyi University Student

A fourth-year student at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) was killed by a haulage truck on Friday while walking near the campus’s main entrance.

Talent Chari and her friend from the same institution were walking from the university along Harare-Chirundu Highway when a haulage truck veered off the road and hit her.

Neither the Mashonaland Central provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Margaret Chitove nor CUT’s acting director of communications and public relations Gifford Chikuya could immediately confirm the incident.

However, some witnesses claimed that the now-deceased student was smashed by the truck’s trailer and died instantly after she had saved her friend from being killed by the same truck.

Student Representative Council (SRC) secretary of external affairs, information and publicity Regis Muzambi confirmed the accident.

She was hit by a haulage truck en route to Zambia near New Greens Building along the Harare-Chirundu highway.

Her body was taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

Muzambi said the other student was rushed to Chinhoyi hospital in critical condition.- NewsDay

Jailed Former Minister Writes Book On Prayer

Jailed former Labour and Social Welfare Minister Petronella Kagonye said she has gained weight in prison and is writing a book on prayer which she plans to release “soon.”

Kagonye, who is incarcerated at the Chikurubi Female Prison, on Thursday told The Herald that she is fulfilling her calling as a pastor during her imprisonment. She said:

I only discovered the other side of me when l got inside here. I am actually a pastor. I went to Bible college but l never thought l would practice what I learnt. The moment l came here, l got that opportunity.

And I am writing a book which l will publish as soon as l am released. It is about prayer. I have made a lot of friends here and I have added some weight.

… l am clocking four months now inside Chikurubi Female Prison and I have learnt quite a lot.

It’s actually a community on its own with new experiences and the good thing is, for everything that happened, God has a reason and purpose.

… When you are inside here, what else can you do other than worship? I have been teaching others how to pray because l realised that there were quite a number of things that were missing.

Others have the desire to worship but the how part remains a challenge. That is why I am mainly focusing on writing a book on prayer.

Kagonye was convicted in June for diverting to her own use, 20 computers which had been donated through her by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) to benefit schools in her Goromonzi South constituency in 2018.

She was sentenced to 36 months with 12 of these set aside for five years on condition of good behaviour.

AC Milan Outclass Juventus

AC Milan beat Juventus 2-0 in a Serie A Matchday 9 encounter played at San Siro on Saturday.

After a cagey start, Milan came close to open the scoring in the 20th minute after Rafael Leao’s ball hit the post.

The Portuguese forward struck the goal frame again ten minutes later, this time thumping the base of the right-hand upright with a crashing drive from 20 yards.

The hosts finally got the lead through Fikayo Tomori’s volley on the stroke of half-time.

Despite retaining a bigger share of possession, Juve never showed real intention to recover after the break and conceded another goal in the 54th minute when Brahim Díaz slotted the ball into the bottom-right corner.

AC Milan continued to control the game with Theo Hernández almost adding another one in the 67th minute but sent his effort over.

The visitors got a chance to to grab a late consolation when Moise Kean’s long range effort was tipped over by goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarasanu.

The match ended 2-0 in favour of the hosts who moved to third place with twenty points, level with leaders Napoli, who have a game in hand.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

VOA Journalist Assaulted By CIO, Zanu Pf Activists

By A Correspondent- Voice of America (VOA)’s Studio 7 journalist based in Zimbabwe, Godwin Mangudya was at the weekend beaten by suspected Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and Zanu PF activists while covering the party’s Central Committee elections.

He was also forced to erase pictures and videos of the event.

The incident happened in Kuwadzana suburb in Harare on Saturday.

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) confirmed sad development and issued a statement condemning the unwarranted attack on the senior scribe.

“Zimbabwean senior journalist Godwin Mangudya was on 8 October 2022 reportedly assaulted by members of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and ruling Zanu PF activists in the Harare suburb of Kuwadzana while covering the party’s Central Committee elections,” reads the statement.

“Mangudya alerted MISA Zimbabwe that he was assaulted by members of the ruling party and CIO despite formally identifying himself and producing his duly constitutionally-accredited Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) press card.

“He was detained for more than an hour, while the Zanu PF activists continuously agitated to further assault him.

“Members of the CIO and Zanu PF security personnel confiscated his mobile phones and reset the gadgets leading to the journalist losing both his personal and work-related information.

“The previous day, Mangudya, was among the journalists who attended a press briefing at the ZANU PF Headquarters in Harare, addressed by both the party’s spokesperson, Ambassador Christopher Mutsvangwa, and Political Commissar, Mike Bimha,” MISA said.

Zanu PF had earlier extended an invitation to members of the media to cover its activities countrywide.

Further reads the statement, “Meanwhile, during the entire ordeal, Mangudya requested the CIO and party activists to reach out to the party’s spokesperson and commissar for them to confirm that journalists had indeed been invited to cover the activities of the party, but that was all in vain.

“MISA Zimbabwe notes with very great concern the continued perpetration of violence against journalists by political party activists, security personnel, and members of the national security.

“This violence against journalists undertaking their constitutional mandate is an assault on the supreme law of the land as provided for under Section 61 of the Constitution which protects media freedom.

“Sadly, these unpunished crimes against journalists, come at a time when the entire world is commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists.

“We, therefore, call the on the police to conduct thorough investigations and hold the perpetrators accountable.”

The media watchdog raised worry over the upsurge in the number of criminal attacks against journalists as Zimbabwe moves towards its elections next year.

“The role of journalists in covering political parties’ activities is to allow the public to access reliable information and make informed decisions and choices.

“MISA Zimbabwe calls on all stakeholders to unite and speak with one voice in calling for an end to these criminal acts against journalists and ensure that media workers are protected to perform their constitutionally guaranteed duties without fear and risk to their personal security.

FC Platinum On The Verge Of Glory

FC Platinum edged closer to a fourth league title on the bounce when they edged Herentals College 1-0 at Mandava Stadium today.

Walter Musona’s solitary strike five minutes into the second half was all the platinum miners needed to collect maximum points and avenge the defeat they suffered in the reverse fixture at the National Sports Stadium back in April.

Norman Mapeza’s charges just need to win their next fixture to be crowned champions.

Platinum may even be champions by tomorrow if Chicken Inn and Dynamos fail to beat Highlanders and WhaWha respectively.

Elsewhere, relegation-threatened Tenax have a lot of work to do to survive the chop, after they succumbed to a 0-2 defeat to Black Rhinos at Sakubva.

At the National Sports Stadium, Takesure Chiragwi’s Ngezi Platinum Stars revival continued with a 1-1 stalemate with relegation-threatened Harare City.

In Bulawayo, Bulawayo Chiefs boosted their slim survival hopes with a crucial 1-0 win over Bulawayo Chiefs.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Stop Abusing Rural Voters, President Chamisa Tells Desperate Zanu PF

About Hygiene And Safe Water

Half of health care facilities worldwide lack basic hygiene services with water and soap or alcohol-based hand rub where patients receive care and at toilets in these facilities, according to the latest Joint Monitoring Programme (JMP) report by WHO and UNICEF.

Around 3.85 billion people use these facilities, putting them at greater risk of infection, including 688 million people who receive care at facilities with no hygiene services at all.

“Hygiene facilities and practices in health care settings are non-negotiable.

Their improvement is essential to pandemic recovery, prevention and preparedness. Hygiene in health care facilities cannot be secured without increasing investments in basic measures, which include safe water, clean toilets, and safely managed health care waste,” said Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health.

“I encourage Member States to step up their efforts to implement their 2019 World Health Assembly commitment to strengthen water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services in health care facilities, and to monitor these efforts.”

The latest report, “Progress on WASH in health care facilities 2000–2021: special focus on WASH and infection prevention and control”, has for the first time established this global baseline on hygiene services – which assessed access at points of care as well as toilets – as more countries than ever report on critical elements of WASH services in their hospitals and other health centres. For hygiene, data are now available for 40 countries, representing 35% of the world’s population, up from 21 countries in 2020 and 14 in 2019.

The newly established global estimate reveals a clearer and more alarming picture of the state of hygiene in health care facilities. Though 68% of health care facilities had hygiene facilities at points of care, and 65% had handwashing facilities with water and soap at toilets, only 51% had both and therefore met the criteria for basic hygiene services. Furthermore, 1 in 11 (9%) of health care facilities globally have neither.

“If health care providers don’t have access to a hygiene service, patients don’t have a health care facility,” said Kelly Ann Naylor, UNICEF Director of WASH and Climate, Environment, Energy, and Disaster Risk Reduction (CEED).

“Hospitals and clinics without safe water and basic hygiene and sanitation services are a potential death trap for pregnant mothers, newborns, and children. Every year, around 670 000 newborns lose their lives to sepsis. This is a travesty – even more so as their deaths are preventable.”

The report notes that contaminated hands and environments play a significant role in pathogen transmission in health care facilities and the spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Interventions to increase access to handwashing with water and soap and environmental cleaning form the cornerstone of infection prevention and control programmes and are crucial to providing quality care, particularly for safe childbirth.
Coverage of WASH facilities is still uneven across different regions and income groupings:

Facilities in sub-Saharan Africa are lagging on hygiene services. While three-quarters (73%) of health care facilities in the region overall have alcohol-based hand rub or water and soap at points of care, only one-third (37%) have handwashing facilities with water and soap at toilets.

The vast majority (87%) of hospitals have hand hygiene facilities at points of care, compared to 68% of other healthcare facilities.
In the Least Developed Countries, only 53% of health care facilities have access on-premises to a protected water source.

To compare, the global figure is 78% with hospitals (88%) doing better than smaller health care facilities (77%), and the figure for eastern and south-eastern Asia is 90%. Globally, around 3% of health care facilities in urban areas and 11% in rural areas had no water service.

Of the countries with available data, 1 in 10 health care facilities globally had no sanitation service.

The proportion of health care facilities with no sanitation services ranged from 3% in Latin America and the Caribbean and in eastern and south-eastern Asia to 22% in sub-Saharan Africa. In the Least Developed Countries, just 1 in 5 (21%) had basic sanitation services in health care facilities.
The data further reveals that many health care facilities lack basic environmental cleaning and safe segregation and disposal of health care waste.
The report is being launched at World Water Week taking place in Stockholm, Sweden.

The annual conference, which runs from 23 August to 1 September, explores new ways to tackle humanity’s greatest challenges: from food security and health to agriculture, technology, biodiversity and climate.

“Vene Vayo” Journalists No Salary for 5 Months

By Showbiz Reporter | Owners of the Kowntry, the nation’s rulers, or better stated in Shona, the “vene vayos” might have stolen USD32 billion from the central bank, RBZ, but they have failed to pay their own hard working journalists a paltry few thousands of dollars, for a whole 5 month period.

These damming disclosures are revealed in letters the Zimbabwe Republic Broadcasting Corporation’s employees have written to the leader of ZANU PF Emmerson Mnangagwa.

It is totally dry out here at pocket Hill Highlands studios, where employees of the broadcaster wake up each morning to assemble news bulletins shaped for propaganda that they may not always agree with.

Vene vayo, is the Shona phrase meaning: ‘its rulers,” and all this comes at a time the debate rages on who is the real Vene Vayo, between the Born-In-Zambia ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa, and leadership predecessor, Ian Smith, who was born in Shurugwi, Zimbabwe, and who Mnangagwa calls a foreigner.

Under Smith, ZBC employees were well remunerated and the job was one of the most prestigious. 44years later, people are going without salaries for over half a year.

ZBC workers have since approached the self proclaimed Vene Vayo Mnangagwa and the letter reads:

Fire Guts Glen View Complex Again

By A Correspondent- A fire broke out at Harare’s Glenview Home Industry Complex on Sunday afternoon and destroyed property worth thousands of dollars.

The Glenview Area 8 Furniture Complex experienced another devastating fire incident just over a month ago, on 7 September 2022, which was reportedly caused by an electrical fault.

Some carpenters who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com claimed that an elderly man was preparing his field this Sunday and started a fire which then spread into the complex.

Reports suggest that approximately half of the complex has been destroyed, with houses close to the complex in Glenview’s Area 8 suburb almost catching fire. A carpenter who declined to be identified was quoted as saying:

About half of the complex has been destroyed. We could not save most of the property because the fire spread rapidly.

The firefighters rushed to the complex and managed to put out the fire.

However, this time it was too bad because several houses close to the complex almost got burned down.

Last month, the Harare City Council said it was going to investigate the possibility of arson in the recurring fires at the Furniture Complex.

In a statement released a day after the fire incident, City of Harare SMEs Committee Chairperson, Councillor Denford Ngadziore, said the local authority could consider temporarily relocating carpenters so that fire prevention work can be done at the complex to prevent future fires.

ZRP Statement On US$1.4m ABC Auction Robbery

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the Saturday morning robbery incident at ABC Auction along Seke Road in Harare.

In a statement posted on the ZRP official Twitter page, police said four unknown suspects subdued two security guards who were at the premises before blasting five safes and stealing US$1.4 million.

Reads the statement:

ZRP is still investigating the circumstances which led to a robbery case at ABC Auction along Seke Road, Harare, on 08/10/22 at around 0130 hours, where four unknown suspects, armed with four unidentified pistols, attacked two security guards who were on duty at the premises.

They tied the security guards with shoelaces and put them under the guard of two suspects while the other two proceeded to the company offices, where they blasted five safes and stole cash and property worth US$1 400 000.

The ABC Auction robbery becomes the second-biggest robbery after more than US$2.5 million was stolen from a ZB Bank cash-in-transit vehicle near Gwebi River in January 2021.

Madam Boss Clashes With Hubby’s Pregnant Lover

By-Socialite and Comedienne Tyra Chikocho, known as Madam Boss, has threatened to evict her husband’s girlfriend from the home where she is staying in Riverside, Chitungwiza.

Madam Boss’ husband, Ngonidzashe Munetsiwa, has been dating Evangelista Zhou for some time, a report claims.

The comedienne reportedly clashed with Evangelista on Monday and the latter sent photographs of her good times with Ngoni to her inner circle.

H-Metro reported sources as saying Evangelista feared that she would lose all the evidence of the good times she used to enjoy with Ngoni.

She claims Ngoni is responsible for her pregnancy. Said the source:

Evangelista was assaulted and her phone was tampered with.

That is why she wanted her pictures with Ngoni to be protected.

Madam Boss claimed that Evangelista was communicating with another man from Masvingo after she went through her WhatsApp conversation.

She is feeling very insecure and that is the reason why she approached the courts for a peace order.

Ngoni pleaded with her for the withdrawal of the peace order.

Ngoni reportedly took Evangelista to Avondale after their illicit affair was exposed sometime in March.

She, however, moved out of the lodgings in protest and was taken to the house in Chitungwiza which belongs to Ngoni and Madam Boss.

Chinhoyi 4th Year Student Killed By Gonyeti

By A Correspondent- A fourth-year student at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) was killed by a haulage truck on Friday while walking near the campus’s main entrance.

Jailed Former Minister Writes Prayer Book

By A Correspondent- Jailed former Labour and Social Welfare Minister Petronella Kagonye said she has gained weight in prison and is writing a book on prayer which she plans to release “soon.”

A further eight months were set aside on condition she restitutes US$10 000, the cost of the stolen laptops.- Pindula News

Struggling Cops Ferried By Suspects

By A Correspondent- The ministry of Home Affairs has revealed that a serious shortage of vehicles is forcing police officers to accept transport to their stations from suspects they would have arrested.

Deputy Home Affairs minister Ruth Mavhungu-Maboyi said the state of affairs in the police force was disturbing with the security organ incapacitated to attend to some crime scenes.

It is true that the police officers are travelling distances to arrest a criminal who owns a car whilst they are travelling on foot which then becomes a very difficult situation.  When they arrive at the scene, they are the ones who are now given a lift by the perpetrator,” Mavhungu-Maboyi said in the Senate’s latest sitting.

“However, we have put a budget aside, especially on the supplementary budget. The minister of Finance is going to look into our plight in order that we may increase the fleet of vehicles at hand.  At the moment, we have cars but they are very few and some are not working.

“The cars are not only going to be used to go and attend criminals with minor offences but also other major crimes like murder.”

The Parliamentary Portfolio committee on defence, home affairs and security services warned a few months ago that the country’s police service could collapse owing to underfunding.

They issued the warning in a report presented in Parliament  following their inquiry into the state of infrastructure and service delivery by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) between October and November last year.

The lawmakers said ZRP requires about 7 000 vehicles to function efficiently but it currently has 2 167 and only 807 of those were on the road.

Asked for comment, Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said to The Standard:

“The official position as far as I am concerned the government is in the process of acquiring vehicles for the police.”

Zanu Pf Heavyweights Fall In Chaotic Party Polls

By A Correspondent- As results started trickling in last night, some Zanu-PF bigwigs including former Health minister David Parirenyatwa, politburo member Tendai Chirau and ex-wife of ruling party deputy president Kembo Mohadi, Tambudzani fell by the wayside in chaotic central committee elections held yesterday.

The polls were marred by reports of vote buying with ICT minister Jenfan Muswere arriving at a polling station in Manicaland with a truck full of bicycles in what was seen as an attempt to buy votes.

As results started trickling in last night, some Zanu-PF bigwigs including former Health minister David Parirenyatwa, politburo member Tendai Chirau and ex-wife of ruling party deputy president Kembo Mohadi, Tambudzani fell by the wayside in chaotic central committee elections held yesterday.

The polls were marred by reports of vote buying with ICT minister Jenfan Muswere arriving at a polling station in Manicaland with a truck full of bicycles in what was seen as an attempt to buy votes.

Parirenyatwa and Lillian Zemura were defeated by David Mugomeza in Murewa district.

In Beitbridge, Mohadi and Ambassador Aaron Maboyi fell by the wayside in the polls.

Although returning officer Zanu-PF provincial member Ntombiyakhe Ndlovu did not disclose official results, excited participants said former Beitbridge Mayor Showa Moyo had bagged the women’s quota slot ahead of Mohadi.

Mohadi’s supporters disputed the results.

“Results will be released from the province but all I can tell you is that all went well and it was indeed peaceful,” Ndlovu said.

Zanu-PF insiders said war veteran Mazibisa Ngwenya beat three other candidates for the Beitbridge East slot while sitting proportional representative MP for Beitbridge Metrine Mudau brushed aside a challenge by Maboyi.

In Wedza district, former Transport Deputy minister Michael Madanha and his Foreign Affairs ministry counterpart David Musabayana lost.

They protested saying the elections were rigged.

Madanha was defeated by Esther Gwatidzo while Musabayana lost to Bertha Choto.

Madanha is a former Wedza South MP and former Zimbabwe National Road Authority (Zinara) board chairperson while Musabayana is the current Wedza North MP.

Chirau, a politburo member, was outpolled in Harare by Mavis Gumbo.

In Hurungwe North, the elections had to be postponed after former finance deputy minister Terence Mukupe caused a scene at Karoi Country Club where voting was taking place.

There was chaos as two of his bouncers including an election agent were chased away from the venue with one of them forced to delete videos and photos that he had taken.

Mukupe was contesting against former deputy minister and MP Reuben Marumahoko. There were ugly scenes from drunken youths who claimed there was vote buying ahead of the elections.

Some voters were booked at local hotels and guest houses around the farming town of Karoi amid claims that they were given cash and mobile phones among other goodies.

Close allies of the late Robert Mugabe such as Sydney Sekeramayi and Webster Shamu were however celebrating after winning.

Sekeramayi was uncontested in Marondera while Shamu won in Chegutu West.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s close ally and controversial socialite Mike Chimombe won in Chinhoyi after he outpolled Charles Mutisi and Alderman Simbarashe Kanzou.

Chimombe is out of custody on $56 000 bail for fraud charges.

In Makonde, deputy information minister Kindness Paradza won uncontested after Phineas Makumbe withdrew citing “unethical and dirty politics”.

I Phineas Makumbe do hereby withdraw my candidature for the central committee elections for Makonde district owing to the unethical and dirty politics being exhibited by my opponent Kindness Paradza” Makumbe wrote in his withdrawal letter.

Philip Chiyangwa won in Zvimba South while Marian Chombo was elected in Zvimba North.

Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi was uncontested in Zvimba West while former CIO operative Francis Mukwangwariri emerged victorious in Zvimba East.

In Matabeleland, logistical challenges affected the elections as voting in areas such as Hwange and Binga started after 3pm, an hour before the deadline.

Brain Drain Haunt Council Clinics

By A Correspondent- City Council clinics have a shortfall of at least 300 nurses, crippling health delivery services in the capital as more health workers continue to quit their jobs over poor pay.

Mayor Jacob Mafume exposed the dire crisis facing Harare clinics and revealed that the local authority required a staff complement of around 600 nurses  but only had less than half the required figure.

“We are supposed to be operating with over 600 health personnel but we have half of that. This is because there is a brain drain to government. We are losing our workers to government because it is paying its workers better than us,” Mafume told journalists during a press conference on Thursday.

“This is because of the United States dollar component.  There is also a brain drain out of the country.  Majority of our health personnel have left the country to look for greener pastures.”

There are no exact statistics on the number of health professionals that left the country in 2021, but the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (Zina) put the figure at just over 2000.

A nurse aide recruitment craze has also hit the country, with many nationals scrambling to get the certificate in the hope of making it to the United Kingdom in search of a better life.

Mafume’s media address followed a petition by the Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA) after a woman gave birth in a toilet at Glenview polyclinic due to negligence by health personnel.

Mafume said the council was investigating the matter.

CHRA programmes manager Reuben Akili said: “The Glenview issue is a tip of the iceberg. There is gross negligence and abuse of human rights at council clinics. The matter should be dealt with urgency.

“We implore the local authority to honour its pledges to investigate the allegations raised by the residents. Corruption, negligence and  criminal abuse of office has resulted in the loss of lives and it should be stopped forthwith.”

Storm Over Passion Java’s Slay Queen Slur

By A Correspondent- Pastors are usually people who preach to people about having to have morals and values and also encourage their congregation about the importance of marriage and why it is valuable to God.

But it seems like different pastors interpret the Bible in different ways. While others preach that being unfaithful in a marriage is wrong, another pastor says another thing.

New Age pastors seem to be encouraging that being unfaithful in a marriage is good because it strengthens the marriage.

Passion Java, a prophet from Zimbabwe, claims that God has called these kinds of women and that they are essential to society.

Many individuals were shocked by the contentious prophet when he made a speech.

He asserts that being a slay queen is a calling from God and that they are essential to preventing marriages from disintegrating.

The affluent and contentious pastor backed up his claim with passages from the Bible, citing examples like King Solomon’s 700 wives.

He added that some men who call themselves men of God actually know less about God than slay queens. Infertility in couples was explicitly encouraged by the prophet rather than condemned.

He claimed that many marriages would have broken up if it weren’t for slay queens.

This wealthy prophet from Zimbabwe appears to have a crush on slay queens while preaching this to his followers.

The preacher is well known for once making the social media rounds after spending 1 million at a well-known South African restaurant.

Chamisa Unearths New Zanu PF Rigging Plot

CIO, Zanu PF Thugs Kidnap & Assault Studio 7 Senior Journalist

By-Zanu PF thugs and suspected members of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) assaulted Studio 7 senior journalist Godwin Mangudya covering the ruling party’s Central Committee elections.

Mangudya was assaulted in the Harare suburb of Kuwadzana on 8 October 2022, according to MISA Zimbabwe.

Godwin Mangudya

Mangudya alerted MISA Zimbabwe that he was assaulted despite formally identifying himself and producing his press card.

He said he was detained for more than an hour while the Zanu PF activists continuously demanded to assault him further.

CIO officers and Zanu PF security personnel reportedly confiscated Mangudya’s mobile phones and reset the gadgets resulting in him losing both his personal and work-related information.

On Friday, during a press briefing at the Zanu PF Headquarters in Harare, addressed by both the party’s Spokesperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa, and Political Commissar, Mike Bimha, the ruling party invited members of the media to cover its activities countrywide.

Top Harare Auctioneer Loses US$1.5 Million To Robbers

By- ABC Auctions along Seke Road in Harare was robbed of US$1.5 million by four suspected armed robbers on Friday night.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the robbers subdued two security guards at the premises before stealing money from safes. He said:

I can confirm that US$1.5 million was stolen from ABC Auctions last night (Friday) after about four armed robbers attacked two security guards at the premises.

The guards were tied with a rope before the robbers proceeded to steal money from eight safes that are kept at the company.

We will give a comprehensive statement tomorrow (today), as investigations are in progress.

Asst Comm Nyathi said that no one was injured during the armed robbery. He added:

As police, we are very much concerned about this trend because every time there is a major money heist like this, there is always someone who would have inside information.

Information we have gathered so far shows that no one was injured during the armed robbery.

ABC Auctions confirmed the robbery but did not disclose the amount. It said it will open its doors as usual from Monday. | The Sunday Mail

Norton Girl Dies While Giving Birth At A Mapostori Shrine

HARARE – A 15-year-old girl from Norton has died giving birth at a shrine of a white garment church sect in Bikita, her family said.

Nokutenda Hwaramba’s demise has the tragic echoes of the death, in July last year, of 14-year-old Anna Machaya while giving birth in Marange and that of 15-year-old Ferby Munyafi of Chiadzwa Village in Marange who died in January this year from excessive bleeding while delivering under the watch of a faith healer.

Nokutenda’s mother Loice Muparadziwo said she could not be with her daughter in her final moments on October 4 as she herself was hospitalised in Norton where she suffered a miscarriage.

“She got sick and would just fall as if possessed by evil spirits. Her father consulted prophets from his congregation and later took her to Bikita for more prayers. He left Nokutenda in the hands of the intercessors and she died while giving birth at the shrine,” Muparadziwo told H-Metro.

“The church doctrine did not allow us to take Nokutenda to a clinic, or hospital to give birth or for any medical treatment.”

Muparadziwo said Nokutenda was impregnated by a man identified only as Aaron, who was a neighbour in Norton. Aaron reportedly vanished when Nokutenda’s pregnancy came to light.
The latest shrine death of a young girl will shine a new spotlight on the sects’ practices, which have been condemned by the United Nations.

Following Anna’s death in July last year, the United Nations urged Zimbabwe’s government to do more to tackle the scourge of child marriages which are rampant at the shrines of the secretive sects.

By blocking access to professional health care, activists also say the churches’ leaders are denying the teenagers control over their own bodies.

Anna’s parents Edmore Machaya, 45, and Shy Mabika, 36, were jailed for nine months each – wholly suspended – for lying to detectives about her age in a bid to conceal that she was a child when they married her off to Hatirarami Momberume alias Evans Michael Momberume, a 25-year-old devotee of the Johane Marange apostolic sect who has been charged with her murder.

In the January 12, 2022, death of Ferby, police charged her “husband” 29-year-old Arthur Chitombo with having sexual relations with a minor.

On January 9, she started experiencing labour pains and was rushed to a faith healer in Mafararikwa Village, the headquarters of the Johane Marange sect in Marange, Manicaland.

Three days later, Ferby went into labour and bled profusely. She died with her unborn child.

Zanu PF Agents Vandalize CCC Vehicle

Tinashe Sambiri| Suspected Zanu PF hooligans raided CCC Gutu East member Desire Tichazorwa’s house and vandalised a constituency campaign vehicle on Wednesday night.

Tichazorwa is managing projects that have been implemented by businessman and banker Gift Gonese in Gutu East Constituency.

Commenting on the attack, Tichazorwa blamed Zanu PF thugs for attempting to disrupt CCC programmes.

” I heard a loud noise last night and as I tried to collect what was taking place, the intruders smashed windows of our constituency vehicle and deflated its tyres.

Zanu PF is afraid of the impact we are making in Gutu East.

When I shouted at the thugs, they ran away. They had a calculated mission to vandalize the constituency car.

There is no doubt that Zanu PF thugs raided my house. We are proceeding with our projects despite the attack,” said Tichazorwa.

Gonese said the attack would not stop a series of projects he is running in the area.

” While we are not happy with what happened, there is no going back. Our wave of development is unstoppable,” said Gonese.

Man Axed For Making S*xual Advances To Married Woman

A man from Hope Fountain on the outskirts of Bulawayo was rushed to hospital after he was severely axed for making sexual advances to a married woman.

Ephraim Moyo (45) got attracted to Rachel Sibanda (34) when he saw her at Hope Fountain business centre.

A witness said Moyo followed her and made sexual advances towards her and he never knew that Rachel’s husband Adam Sibanda (39) was nearby.

It is alleged Moyo dashed to Rachel and grabbed her by her hand before he passed a comment on how sexually attractive her body was.

The comment angered Adam who rushed to them and quizzed him on what he was up to, the bystander told B-Metro.

An argument broke out and in a fit of rage Adam who was armed with an axe struck him several times on the body leaving him lying on the ground and his face covered in blood. Adam left his axe and blood- soaked shirt at the scene and went into hiding.

The incident was reported to the police leading to Adam’s arrest.

A bystander transported Moyo to a hospital for treatment and he is reportedly still in hospital.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident. He discouraged community members from taking the law into their own hands.

“We would like to discourage community members from taking law into their own hands as that might lead to unnecessary loss of life. If members of the public face a dispute they should consult third parties such as relatives, elders in the community or friends rather than taking the law into their own hands.”
