The driver, identified as Francis Chipoka of Zambia, was last seen driving the hefty cargo for City Frontiers Transport, a Lusaka-based company, before both he and the copper disappeared without a trace. According to police reports, Chipoka was assigned to transport the copper using a Howo Sinotruk super-link truck, distinctively white and towing two trailers. Biti, who formerly served as Secretary General of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and was also a vice president of the MDC Alliance, issued a scathing statement on Sunday lambasting the new currency rollout.

Biti remarked, “Introducing a currency is a process. It’s not a one-night thing.

It’s not like you put on a red T-shirt today, then a yellow T-shirt or a blue one the day after… It’s a process because you’ll be trying to build confidence internally.”

By A Correspondent| Zanu PF has readmitted a Chipinge drug dealer who was once stopped from contesting for parliamentary elections after he was found with illicit beer inside his house.

According to Zanu PF Manicaland provincial chairperson Tawanda Mukodza, Robert Nyemudzo was re-admitted back into the party after his expulsion early last year.

Nyemudzo defeated Zanu PF Manicaland strongman Enock Porusingazi who later bounced back at the mercy of the party politburo which nullified the primary elections results.

Mukodza also announced tje expulsion and suspension of former Mutare North legislator, Mr Batsirayi Pemhenayi provincial Women’s League chairlady, Mrs Happiness Nyakuedzwa respectively.

Mukodza further said the ruling party had readmitted its former national secretary for youth affairs, Kudzi Chipanga, Robert Nyemudzo, of Chipinge South and pride Chadambuka.

On April 6, 2024, President Nelson Chamisa’s key leaders successfully convened a crucial meeting at Mucheke Hall in Masvingo urban, despite significant efforts by the police to prevent it. In a recent incident at Ward 3 Redcliff Urban, St. Batholomeo Anglican Church Polling Station, Zanu PF Councillor Idiraishe Dongo reported a violent attack allegedly perpetrated by opposition supporters.

The councillor’s car, a Mercedes-Benz C200, was damaged when a stone thrown by an individual identified as Emmanuel Ndhlera Macheza shattered the passenger’s window.

Macheza, reportedly from Zvishavane’s No. 15A MaGlass area and known in the Mandava farming market, launched the attack just moments before the voting ended.

“The incident left Zanu PF Party Councillor Candidate Christina Sigauke injured, particularly concerning as she is pregnant and was seated in the passenger’s seat.

The stone struck her below her left breast, causing injury.

Councillor Dongo herself sustained a swollen arm during the attack, “a Zanu PF source claimed.

Speaking out about the incident, Councillor Dongo criticized the opposition’s alleged violent behavior, stating that they have targeted her and her vehicle throughout the day.

Amid expectations of a shift to a new national currency, the government’s stance has pivoted back to the US dollar, according to an advertisement for an event featuring Reserve Bank governor John Mushayavanhu scheduled for April 9.

This development, spearheaded by Zimbabwe’s top monetary authority, marks a significant setback for the new currency, effectively undermining its credibility soon after its launch.

The Central Bank governor was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

The advertised event, a USD 100 monetary policy review meeting, will be broadcast by various state-aligned media outlets.

PREPARATIONS for the Independence Day celebrations which will be held in Buhera are now at an advanced stage, with ongoing works expected to be completed by the 16th of this month.

The 44th Independence Day celebrations are progressing well with Vice President Cde Kembo Mohadi impressed with the progress registered so far.

Vice President Mohadi and some cabinet ministers were on an assessment tour of the venue in Murambinda area of Buhera this Friday.

“Seeing is believing and I am impressed with what I have seen here. Everything seems to be going well. A few touch-ups are left and it’s promising. We have been given an update and we are quite happy with what we have seen here,” he said.

Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza gave an update on the progress.

“All is in order and we are happy that we are successfully going to host the Independence celebrations. The main arena has been completed and a few works are left with the changing rooms. Everything is going well. Works are progressing well and by the 16th everything should be done as we wait for the celebrations,” he said.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Honourable Felix Mhona weighed in with a progress report on road infrastructure.

“As construction works continue we have set a target to finish all feeder roads by the 10th of April. Roads at this time are critical for the accessibility of all the facilities to be used on the day of the celebrations. All is progressing well and come the day of the celebrations all will go on smoothly,” he noted.

With most of the major works having been completed, the authorities are confident that this year’s Uhuru celebrations are expected to be spectacular.

A couple has been charged with defrauding Sunday Chifamba, the proprietor of Pandhari Hotel, amounting to a significant loss of US$90,000. The accused, Usedia Zhuwaneti and Edzayi Arufaneti, were presented before the Harare magistrate Ethel Chichera, with Shepard Makonde representing them.

## Circumstances of the Fraud

The prosecution, led by State prosecutor Zebediah Bofu, outlined a premeditated scheme initiated in 2014 by the accused couple. Posing as shareholders of Anglovaal Investments Private Limited, they purportedly owned stand number 761 Glen Lorne Township of 41 of Glen Lorne, with rights allegedly secured under Deed of Transfer 9391/98 via the company. This claim set the stage for their fraudulent dealings with Mr. Chifamba.

In March 2014, swayed by the Zhuwanetis’ misrepresentations, Chifamba entered into a transaction to purchase stand number 761 Glen Lorne for US$90,000. The value of this property was misrepresented as equivalent to 200 shares in Anglovaal Investments (Pvt) Ltd, a claim that significantly influenced Chifamba’s decision to proceed with the purchase.

## Unraveling of the Scheme

The fraudulent nature of the transaction came to light in 2016 when Eelco Alexis Walraven, the actual owner of the property, surfaced. Walraven, who had initially sold the property to Anglovaal Investments in 2011 and reclaimed it due to non-fulfillment of payment terms by Anglovaal Investments (Pvt) Ltd, contested Chifamba’s ownership. The conflict culminated in June 2019 when Walraven secured a High Court order for Chifamba’s eviction from the property, thereby exposing the fraudulent transaction orchestrated by the Zhuwanetis.

## Consequences and Legal Proceedings

The aftermath of the Zhuwanetis’ fraudulent activities has left Mr. Chifamba with a substantial financial loss of US$90,000, with no recoveries reported. Address by the Head of State and Government and Commander-In-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces His Excellency Dr ED Mnangagwa

It is my singular honour and privilege to join you today for the unveiling of this sacred site, the Kamungoma Liberation War Shrine, where 105 of our fellow brothers and sisters were brutally killed by the Rhodesian army on the 14th of May 1978.

We are gathered here today in Gutu District, which gave us luminaries of our liberation struggle, notable among them is the Soul of the Nation, the late National Hero and Vice President, Simon Vengai Muzenda.

This particular occasion is in honour of the communities, ordinary men and women, boys and girls, as well as veterans of the liberation struggle, who bore the brunt of the racist brutality by the white settler regime, in our quest for independence, democracy, freedom and self-determination.

Many of our people here in Gutu District and Masvingo Province as a whole were massacred and buried in shallow graves. Occasions such as this one are a solemn reminder to all of us that we must never forget our history.

It is, thus, befitting that as we remember those who perished here at Kamungoma, in a fortnight’s time, we will be commemorating our 44th Independence Day Anniversary in Murambinda, Manicaland Province.

May I now invite you all to rise and observe a minute of silence in honour of our dearly departed. May their souls continue to rest in eternal peace.

Our country experienced a brutal process of colonisation by the British, who oppressed communities in their unbridled quest to loot our resources and make our beloved nation an extension of the British Empire.

In so doing, our forefathers lost possession of their land, livestock and other productive assets, including key heritage artifacts that define us as a people.

The arrogance and disregard of the rights of the black majority were so brute to the extent that Ian Douglas Smith declared he did not believe in black majority rule ‘not in a thousand years’.

Driven by their desire to resist colonial occupation, our forebears waged the First Chimurenga, which saw numerous battles being fought across the country.

In particular, our gallant heroine Mbuya Nehanda, while on death row, remarked “Mapfupa angu achamuka”.

The country subsequently witnessed the upsurge of various forms of resistance, which eventually led to the Second Chimurenga/Umvukela.

The path was not easy for the thousands of sons and daughters that trekked into military camps in Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana, Angola and Tanzania.

The merciless bombings of innocent civilians in refugee camps in Zambia and Mozambique will forever be a painful part of our national history. Lest we forget.

Today, the Kamungoma Massacre is testimony of the extent to which the settler regime wanted to hold on to the governance space and architecture of our country, including pillaging our God-given resources.

‘Isu vana vaMunhumutapa takaramba zvekudzvanyirirwa.’

We are forever grateful to communities, whose political consciousness, clarity of vision and resolve saw us dismantle the white settler regime.

I commend, vana Chimbwido nana Mujibha vedu, who bravely and courageously undertook dangerous missions, including the task of reconnaissance and intelligence gathering to aid our war effort. Ndinokutendai mose.

The 14th of May 1978, remains a dark day in our country’s history as 104 innocent and unarmed civilians, as well as one guerrilla fighter, were killed.

On that fateful day, the liberation war fighters as ‘the fish’ and the people ‘as water’, were at a pungwe drumming up the support and solidarity of communities as well as instilling hope for the imminent freedom, independence and liberation from colonial oppression.

The indiscriminate attack saw teenagers and women, some being breastfeeding mothers, lose their precious lives.

The deceased were buried in shallow mass graves. Many survivors of the callous attack still carry with them the trauma, memories, wounds and pain.

These are the experiences that made us a free people and nation; a sovereign state in the comity of nations. We will never forget. Present generations are challenged to bring forward their knowledge and expertise, in whatever form, towards advancing our national development agenda right from the individual level.

I urge schools and universities, including our general citizenry, to take a keen interest in visiting such important places for a greater appreciation of our liberation war heritage.

We are a resilient people, ever prepared to defend and protect our country.

This spirit must never die. Yester-year we took up arms, today we are building our country in unity, brick by brick and stone upon stone, strengthened by the knowledge that Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevene vayo/ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabanikazi balo.

On Tribalism

We are one people, with one national flag and one national anthem. All of us belong to this beloved country.

Let us say no to regionalism, tribalism and all forms of divisions. This independence was realised because of the unity among our people. Let us protect it.

On El-Nino induced drought

Following the El Nino induced drought, which has led to a poor harvest, yesterday I declared a National State of Disaster.

I once again assure the people of our great motherland, Zimbabwe, that no one will die of hunger. In the days of our liberation struggle, we united against all odds to defeat the colonial regime.

With these remarks, it is now my singular honour and privilege to officially unveil the Kamungoma Liberation War Shrine.

PREPARATIONS for the Independence Day celebrations which will be held in Buhera are now at an advanced stage, with ongoing works expected to be completed by the 16th of this month.

The 44th Independence Day celebrations are progressing well with Vice President Cde Kembo Mohadi impressed with the progress registered so far.

Vice President Mohadi and some cabinet ministers were on an assessment tour of the venue in Murambinda area of Buhera this Friday.

“Seeing is believing and I am impressed with what I have seen here. Everything seems to be going well. A few touch-ups are left and it’s promising. We have been given an update and we are quite happy with what we have seen here,” he said.

Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza gave an update on the progress.

“All is in order and we are happy that we are successfully going to host the Independence celebrations. The main arena has been completed and a few works are left with the changing rooms. Everything is going well. Works are progressing well and by the 16th everything should be done as we wait for the celebrations,” he said.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Honourable Felix Mhona weighed in with a progress report on road infrastructure.

“As construction works continue we have set a target to finish all feeder roads by the 10th of April. Roads at this time are critical for the accessibility of all the facilities to be used on the day of the celebrations. All is progressing well and come the day of the celebrations all will go on smoothly,” he noted.

With most of the major works having been completed, the authorities are confident that this year’s Uhuru celebrations are expected to be spectacular.

In a statement ActionAid Zimbabwe said the solution to Zimbabwe’s economic challenges lies in addressing confidence issues not currency.

“While the initiative may be presented as a solution to Zimbabwe’s economic challenges, we believe that what Zimbabweans truly need is the restoration of confidence in the economy, not the introduction of yet another currency,” ActionAid Zimbabwe said.

The organisation added that the country’s history was riddled with currency instability problems, with various currencies introduced over the years, each accompanied by promises of economic recovery but argued that the solutions often fell short, leaving Zimbabweans vulnerable to economic uncertainty and hardship.

“The introduction of the ZiG currency risks repeating the mistakes of the past,” the spokesperson warned. “Instead of addressing the root causes of our economic challenges, it offers a temporary fix that fails to inspire confidence among Zimbabweans.”

The organization called on the government to prioritize comprehensive reforms addressing issues such as corruption, mismanagement, and lack of transparency. They emphasized the need for an environment conducive to investment, accountability, and good governance.

“We urge policymakers to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders from all sectors of society to develop sustainable solutions that will benefit the entire nation,” the organisation added.

Murder suspect, Peter Dube has appeared at the Gweru Provincial Magistrate Courts for initial remand following his deportation from Mozambique on Wednesday.

Dube faces two counts of murder and two more counts of attempted murder, which he allegedly committed in 2021 before fleeing to Ireland through South Africa and Eswatini.

He was arrested in Ireland last year for violating migration laws and was deported to Mozambique, after claiming that he was a Mozambican national.
