Harare Men Charged for Impersonating CID Officers in Fraudulent Scheme

In a shocking turn of events, two men from Harare have been dragged to court over allegations of impersonating Criminal Investigations Department (CID) police officers and engaging in fraudulent activities. Innocent Chimutsi, aged 44, and Tawanda Marabada, 36, found themselves before Harare Magistrate Mr. Dennis Mangosi, facing two counts of impersonation. The magistrate granted each of the accused US$100 bail, with their case remanded to April 4, pending trial.

The duo reportedly entangled themselves in a deceitful web in January 2024, when Andsen Patson stumbled upon a Facebook advertisement they had posted. This advert falsely offered Certificates of Sponsorship (COS) for individuals aiming to travel to the United Kingdom. Patson, eager to secure a COS for his wife’s travel plans, fell prey to their scheme. He transferred a hefty deposit of 4,000 British Pounds out of the total charge of 5,500 British Pounds to the fraudsters, following an agreement to settle the balance upon receipt of the COS. The payment was made through Patson’s uncle, who resides in the UK.

The plot thickened when Patson received what was purported to be an offer letter and the COS via a WhatsApp account. However, his excitement turned to dismay upon discovering that the COS was counterfeit during his wife’s visa application process. Attempts to reconnect with Chimutsi and Marabada proved futile, leading to a frustrating silence from the accused parties.

The situation took an even more bizarre turn on February 20, when Chimutsi, using the same Facebook account, reached out to Patson. This time, he deceitfully claimed to be a CID detective investigating the case—a case that Patson had never reported to the police. Sensing the anomaly, Patson consulted officers at Harare Central Police, who devised a sting operation.

Under police surveillance, Chimutsi brazenly demanded US$100 from Patson, allegedly for fuel expenses to recover the lost money, along with an additional demand of 500 British Pounds as compensation upon recovery. The trap was set for a meeting at the Monomutapa Building. The rendezvous led to the apprehension of Chimutsi and Marabada by ZRP Harare Central police officers, exposing their charade as fake detectives.

This case shines a spotlight on the alarming trend of social media being used as a platform for sophisticated scams, ensnaring unsuspecting victims through the guise of official authority. It serves as a stark reminder of the vigilance needed when dealing with online transactions and the importance of verifying the authenticity of such offers.

In a recent ruling that underscores the strict enforcement of immigration laws, 50-year-old American citizen Austin Ray has been fined $300 following convictions for breaches of the Immigration Act and escaping from lawful custody in Zimbabwe. The proceedings, which concluded in the Harare Magistrate’s Court, saw Ray facing serious charges under the watchful eye of Magistrate Mrs. Ruth Moyo.

Ray, a holder of American passport number A07061933, found himself in legal trouble after arriving at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport on February 19. His arrival, on Airlink flight number 42104, marked the beginning of his legal woes. The American national’s attempt to secure a holiday visa was thwarted when immigration officers discovered a discrepancy in his travel documentation. According to the State’s presentation, Ray was previously issued a notice requiring him to leave Zimbabwe by February 7, 2024, but he had failed to comply.

Lacking the necessary written authorization from the Minister to enter Zimbabwe, Ray was denied entry and subsequently placed in a temporary holding facility at the airport pending deportation. However, Ray’s situation took a dramatic turn when he unlawfully exited the holding cell and entered the country without a valid permit, thereby also escaping from lawful custody.

The court heard detailed accounts of how Ray managed to tamper with the cell’s locking mechanism, facilitating his unauthorized entry into Zimbabwe. This act of defiance not only violated the country’s Immigration Act but also raised serious concerns about the security measures at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

In a distressing event that has deeply unsettled the Umguza community in Matabeleland North, a local businessman, who has requested anonymity for safety reasons, endured a night of sheer terror when armed robbers invaded his shop last Wednesday.

The ordeal began with what the businessman described as “the unmistakable sound of a gun” that abruptly disturbed his sleep. Compelled by fear and concern, he made his way to the shop, only to be met with a scene far exceeding his worst fears. “I was greeted by the horrifying sight of my wife and children on the floor, with three armed men towering over them,” he recounted, still visibly shaken by the memory.

The situation quickly escalated when one of the intruders struck him on the back of the head with the butt of a pistol, threatening to shoot. “One of the gunmen hit me viciously on the back of the head and threatened to shoot me if I didn’t comply,” he said, recalling the terrifying moment.

Following their demands, the robbers instructed him to lie on the floor alongside his family. “They demanded cash and cellphones, leaving us no choice but to comply in fear for our lives,” he explained. The criminals managed to flee with US$100 and two cellphones, leaving the family in a state of shock and trauma.

The businessman immediately reported the incident to the police, leading to a swift investigation and the arrest of 32-year-old Makhosini Mathobela. “We are doing everything in our power to apprehend and prosecute those responsible for this heinous act,” a police spokesperson stated, confirming the ongoing efforts to track down the remaining suspects.

Mathobela, found in possession of a pistol, has been charged with armed robbery. He appeared before Bulawayo regional magistrate Dambudzo Malunga, pleading not guilty to the charges. “The accused has been remanded in custody until February 26, as we continue our investigation,” the magistrate announced, signaling the judiciary’s resolve in dealing with the case.

THE two children who were electrocuted in Kuwadzana suburb of Harare on Monday have been buried at Mbudzi Cemetery, with the family and community battling to come to terms with the incident.

What was supposed to be a normal morning for the Makwindi family, has left the Kuwadzana community in shock as two of the children were electrocuted in their sleep.

Junior Makwindi (4) and Tinotenda Tineyi Maketo (6) were electrocuted after getting into contact with an upright refrigerator in a room they were sleeping.

Fighting tears, Faith Makwindi, an aunt to the deceased, narrated the sad incident.

“Junior and Tinotenda were sleeping in the dining room together with other children. I woke up early and was doing the dishes outside. I then sent Tino who was also awake to wake the other two up and get ready for school.

When he tried lifting Junior up, he felt the electrical current and dropped him on the floor and came out to call me. I went inside to see when I started shaking them and they were not responsive,” she said.

“I them called Gogo who stays next door who came in and looked at them and told me to take them to the clinic.

We carried them to the clinic not knowing they were already dead. When we got there, the nurses pronounced them dead. I’m still in shock and hurt as I’m the one who raised them and was a mother to them. Their mother is my sister, but I was the one staying with them.”

Their grandfather, Mr Ignatius Makwindi who was at work on the fateful day, is yet to come to terms with the shocking incident.

“I left home for work on Monday morning, but before I got to work, I received news of their death. The fridge is still new and I don’t understand how they were electrocuted. ZESA has since disconnected electricity so that they ascertain what really happened,” he narrated.

The family has been robbed of two innocent lives that will never reach their full potential nor will their laughter and echoes be felt in the home.

Zanu PF youths, returning from the Mushagashe Training Centre in Masvingo after attending the Robert Mugabe Youth Day celebrations, officiated by Emmerson Mnangagwa, unleashed chaos at a guest hotel in Chivhu on Wednesday night.

In a disturbing display, the inebriated hooligans stormed the hotel premises, shouting obscenities and harassing guests, demanding to know their political affiliation.

According to reports, eight Zanu PF youths aggressively accosted guests, while two intoxicated women wielding beer bottles openly solicited sex from them, threatening to enter rooms themselves if their demands were not met.

The visibly drunk youths also hurled insults at guests.

Advocate Chamisa today visited the Namibian Embassy in Harare to pay his condolences following the death of that country’s late President Hage Geingob.

President Geingob died on the 4th of February this year, weeks after he was diagnosed with cancer.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa this month signed the condolences book and he described the late leader as a ‘GIANT’ in Africa politics and leadership.

Acting president of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Professor Welshman Ncube, has refuted allegations that he was involved in Sengezo Tshabangu’s actions and responsible for the recalls of party representatives.

Contrary to claims that he and Tendai Biti orchestrated Tshabangu’s actions to undermine the party and target former party leader Nelson Chamisa, Professor Ncube clarified that he initially learned about the recalls from a friend abroad. Dismissing the possibility of Chamisa initiating the recalls, he investigated the matter further, only to find out that Tshabangu had indeed signed the letters without consulting party leadership.

Ncube recounted the unfolding of events during the second wave of recalls, which coincided with his mourning period for his late mother. Despite assurances from Tshabangu that he hadn’t initiated the recalls, the acting president later discovered that 23 individuals had been recalled. This revelation led Ncube to emphasize that Tshabangu was acting independently and not under anyone’s control.

Addressing the ongoing challenges within the party, particularly the Tshabangu issue, Professor Ncube stressed the importance of tackling these problems head-on. He acknowledged the existence of pending court cases and affirmed the party’s commitment to addressing current issues, expressing confidence in their ability to overcome challenges.

Furthermore, Ncube acknowledged fundamental differences within the party, citing the suspension of crucial meetings that exacerbated the situation. He urged honesty in acknowledging these differences as genuine political and ideological disparities rather than gloating over them. As the acting party leader, Ncube affirmed their commitment to resolving internal conflicts and confronting the challenges facing the opposition party.

Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa continues to show his statesmanship by tackling national problems facing the country while his adversaries focus on him.

CCC acting President Welshman Ncube on Tuesday appeared on CITE attacking Chamisa labelling him a dictator among other labels but the 2023 Presidential candidate is unfazed in his quest to fight for every citizen.

Yesterday, Chamisa decried the destruction of national pride by the Zanu PF regime.

He said due to the prevailing political and economic problems, Zimbabwe was continuously losing its best brains to other countries thereby assaulting the national dignity of the Citizens.

Former State Security Minister Didymus Mutasa has refuted claims made by his nephew, Temba Mliswa, regarding share ownership in Muungwe Investments Private Limited as the fight for vast pieces of land in Rusape rages.

Mutasa said he owns 100% of the shares in the company, contrary to Mliswa’s assertion that holds a 10% stake.

Mliswa, Mutasa, Martin Naivada Mutasa and Mabel Mananiseyi Maril Dete are listed as directors of Muungwe Investments.

The fallout between Mliswa and other directors follows the release of minutes of a meeting allegedly held on January 14 this year in Rusape authorising Mutasa (Didymus) to enter into a land development agreement with Brobondo (Private) Limited on the land in question.

The land in question is held under Deed of Transfer number 7972/2008, Deed of Grant number 6600/2008 and Deed of Grant 8874/2008 in Lupane.

Mliswa on Tuesday said there was a plot to elbow him out in a grand land heist.

In response to Mliswa’s allegations, Mutasa yesterday said Mliswa and Mabel Dete were no longer board members of Muungwe Investments. Dete and Mliswa reportedly resigned from the company in 2017 and 2021, respectively.

According to Mutasa, Mliswa was removed from the directorship structure in February 2021.

“The current directors of Muungwe Investments Private Limited are myself and Maivada Chikomba Mutasa. Removal of Temba Mliswa from directorship structure; I removed him in February 2021,” Mutasa said.

“I wrote him a letter to that effect. It was sent by email and also delivered to his Borrowdale address,” said Mutasa. “He did not challenge this removal then.

“He did not participate in any business of Muungwe Investments Private Limited or attend any meetings of the company, be it annual general meeting or emergency general meeting.”

Mutasa claimed that Mliswa did not contest his removal from the board and did not participate in any business or meetings of the company thereafter.

Mutasa claimed there was an agreement in 2015 to potentially allocate up to 30% of the company’s shares to Mliswa and Dete in exchange for their contribution to the land development.

He, however, said the agreement never materialised because the housing development project in Rusape had not commenced at that time.

A Zanu PF lawmaker on Wednesday said Zanu PF had “offered” President Emmerson Mnangagwa a third term in office after several party officials chanted a slogan that the 81-year-old “will still be there in 2030.”

Mnangagwa began his second and final term after winning disputed elections last August, but there is a new push among his loyalists to amend the constitution to scrap term limits.

The amendment would require affirmation by two thirds of lawmakers in the National Assembly, and again in the Senate. Even then, the constitution says the incumbent cannot benefit from an amendment to a term limit provision, requiring movers of such a plan to take it to a public referendum.

“Zanu PF Masvingo province today offered President ED Mnangagwa a third term in office as president of Zimbabwe,” Bikita South MP Energy Mutodi wrote on X while attending Youth Day celebrations at Mushagashe Training Centre in Masvingo, attended by Mnangagwa.

He added: “Amid cheers, whistling and ululations, the provincial chairman Robson Mavhenyengwa chanted the slogan ‘2030 vaMnangagwa vanenge vachipo!’ to a deafening applause.”

Vice President Kembo Mohadi, who took to the podium to introduce Mnangagwa, also repeated the slogan.

“Your Excellency, before I invite you to take the podium, I was thrilled by the new slogan. Allow me to chant the slogan,” Mohadi said.

Mnangagwa’s second and final term expires in 2028, and the slogan’s crafters appear to be suggesting that he will be well into his third term in 2030.

Mnangagwa made reference to the new slogan during his speech, remarking: “Those saying Mnangagwa will be there in 2030, was there any suggestion that I won’t be there? Only one person knows when I’m going, and that’s Jehovah.”

In a 2018 interview with CNN, months after coming to power through a military coup, Mnangagwa said he would respect the constitution and serve just two terms.

“The maximum is two terms, for any president, and I will abide by that,” Mnangagwa said.

In another interview with Zimpapers Television Network ahead of the August 2023 elections, Mnangagwa said: “I am going for my second term, this is my last term.”

Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who is on a trip to Russia and missed Wednesday’s event, is the frontrunner to replace Mnangagwa as Zanu PF’s leader. Attempts to extend Mnangagwa’s time in office would rile his supporters and stoke factionalism in Zanu PF.

The officers, identified as Wellington Mlambo, 43, and Gracious Selemani, 35, who are stationed at Braeside, have been charged with assault and criminal abuse of office. They made their initial court appearance before Magistrate Ruth Moyo on Monday and have been remanded until March 18, each granted bail at US$100.

The ordeal began on the morning of February 15, when the victim was apprehended at Mbare Musika under accusations of receiving stolen property, charges which he vehemently denied. Despite his denials, it is alleged that upon their arrival at the CID Braeside Police Station, Mlambo and Selemani engaged in a brutal interrogation session, assaulting the man under his feet with a baton in a vile attempt to extract a confession.

In a distressing turn of events, the court was informed that the two officers then demanded a US$150 bribe from the complainant to secure his release. The complainant’s brother complied, providing the demanded amount to the corrupt officers. Furthermore, the victim was coerced into paying a US$15 fine for purportedly failing to maintain a register of second-hand goods, an accusation added to compound his woes.

The complainant and his brother were eventually released, but the nightmare did not end upon leaving the police station. It was on their journey home that the victim realized the severity of his injuries, as he discovered he was passing blood-stained urine—a chilling testament to the brutality he endured under the custody of Mlambo and Selemani.

Acting on the complainant’s report, an investigation was launched, culminating in the arrest of the two CID officers. The case has sparked outrage and concern over the conduct of law enforcement officials, highlighting a pressing need for systemic reforms to address issues of torture and corruption within the ranks. DRUG kingpins have found a haven among commercial sex workers, who have become their latest prey for pushing dangerous substances in Harare.

ZBC News took the streets of Harare and uncovered a horrid tale, one of Tyrese and his peers, who have fallen victim to the ugly world of drug and substance abuse.

His hands move with a lot of unease as he does his dishes, the effects of crystal meth abuse for close to three years.

It takes him at least 30 minutes to complete the chore, all the while trying to control the involuntary shaking of his hands.

Tyrese (not his real name) has agreed to open up on this chapter of his life, but only if his identity is concealed.

Life on the streets was hard, he says, but there are stories yet to be told.

“There are people who are well up who come with these drugs on the streets. My brother, I am talking about bags and bags of crystal meth being dumped on the streets. They target children on the streets and school-going children. Sometimes they just come and leave their product and they will then come and collect their money later. This is a syndicate that happens mostly around 4 pm,” he said.

“Never my brother, these people don’t touch these drugs. These are people who are smartly dressed. You cannot tell that these are the devils selling such substances,” added Tyrese.

Drug and substance abuse is moving with ruthless ferocity among youths as the peddlers come up with new devious methods.

The latest of their prey are commercial sex workers in the capital city.

“I can tell you that this is their new customer base. They are selling and using commercial sex workers to push the illicit products,” said Tyrese.

A Masvingo man who was nabbed while selling five lion heads valued at US$100 000 yesterday appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo facing poaching charges.

Patson Ndhlovu (32) who was remanded out of custody on US$200 bail will return to court on March 18 for trial.

Allegations are that on February 17 this year, detectives from CID Flora and Fauna Unit in Harare received information that Ndlovu and his accomplices were in possession of five lion heads and were looking for potential buyers.

The detectives swiftly reacted to the information and proceeded to the scene where they carried out some surveillance and observed the accused person and his accomplices approaching the team’s advance party vehicle which was being driven by a detective.

The accused person and his accomplices then entered the vehicle which was parked at Harare’s Baines clinic. The vehicle then drove towards Mazowe Street.

While observing from a distant, the backup team saw their colleague together with the accused and his accomplices disembarking from the motor vehicle and enter Mazoe Mansions Flats.

After a while the detectives noticed the accused person carrying a blue and purple bag which he placed it at the back of the advance team’s pickup truck. The detectives then approached the advance team’s car and introduced themselves by producing police identity cards and asked the accused person to produce a permit or licence authorising him to possess the lion heads.

The accused failed to produce the documents, leading to his arrest and recovery of five lion heads which will be produced in court as exhibits.

Dancehall singer Jah Signal has reached out to the Charambas and made peace with them following a nasty fallout last week over copyright infringement by the young artiste.

The Charambas caused YouTube to pull down Jah Signal’s two songs Shinga Muroora and Tengai Mafuta after they accused him of recording two renditions of their gospel songs without consent.

In a statement, Jah Signal’s management said the two parties had met and resolved their differences.

“On behalf of the Swaah family and fans, Jah Signal would like to make and let it be known that following a meeting with The Man of God, Pastor and Amai Charamba, an amicable position has been reached that will remain private and confidential to the two parties,” the statement read.

“Jah Signal expresses deep remorse and extends his sincere apologies to The Charambas and their fans for any distress caused by the unintended infringement. He acknowledges his mistake and is committed to learning from this experience, as well as implementing measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

“In light of this settlement, we urge all fans to respect the decision reached. We urge all to refrain from attacking, dissing, or any form of abuse, social media or otherwise, directed towards either The Charambas or Jah Signal/Swaah Family. Ncube has accused former party leader Nelson Chamisa of turning the fledging opposition party into a one-man show before he resigned.

Chamisa resigned from CCC last month citing infiltration after self-imposed interim secretary-general Sengezo Tshabangu snatched the party from him and recalled legislators and councillors.

Chamisa unveiled the CCC in January 2022 after losing control of the MDC Alliance to Douglas Mwonzora.

CCC has since split into three factions: One led by Chamisa’s loyalists, another by Tshabangu and the one which has coalesced under the MDC 2019 structures, with Ncube emerging as its first acting president.

Ncube, Tendai Biti and Lynette Karenyi-Kore are acting CCC presidents on a 90-day rotational basis.

In a wide-ranging interview with Bulawayo-based online news channel CITE, Ncube indirectly took a dig at Chamisa’s leadership style, which he said created the crisis bedevilling the opposition.

“We got here because we now had a situation where(by) collectively, the democratic collective leadership no longer worked as one and we were unable to meet as elected individuals, as elected leadership, to address the challenges that we were facing,” he said.

Ncube said there were fundamental differences in the party, with key meetings and other platforms for engagement suspended.

“We had suspended meetings of the national council. Some of us believe that we are fighting Zanu PF which is authoritarian, which is undemocratic and which has one centre of power. We must demonstrate that we are the opposite of Zanu PF,” he said.

“We must do while in opposition things we are expected to do when we get into government, not running an autocratic, an authoritarian, theocratic opposition then expect sincere genuine people to believe that once in power, you no longer believe in autocracy and theocracy.

“These are the differences we had in opposition.”

Ncube said he was elected to be the first acting vice-president of the opposition because of his seniority.

“Now that the president of the party had resigned and dissociated himself with the party, it was necessary for us to step up to the plate, to take responsibility and to ensure that the party is brought back on track, and hence that we will rotate,” he said.

“And the standing committee decided that I will go first as being the most senior of the three vice-presidents as elected at Gweru, so that, therefore, I have been mandated in the next 90 days to do all that I can, working with the other vice-presidents, working with the secretariat of the party, working with the rest of the departments of the party to address the challenges that the party face today.”

Ncube revealed that he last spoke to Chamisa two months ago.

He distanced himself from Tshabangu.

Previous reports said Biti and Ncube were some of the disgruntled party bigwigs behind Tshabangu as they sought to snatch the party from Chamisa.

Chamisa has not announced his next move since he stepped down as CCC leader.

Some CCC legislators have chosen to stay put, saying they could not resign in solidarity with Chamisa because of lack of clarity on the way forward.

In a separate incident, four individuals impersonating police officers have been arraigned in court for allegedly stealing a car under the guise of arresting the complainant for a traffic offense.

Prosper Tatenda Thomo (29), Maxwell Musvisvi (34), Rodwell Dongo (41), and Norman Mungwarari (31) have been remanded in custody for the alleged theft.

Meanwhile, the trial involving gospel musician Ivy Kombo, her husband Admire Kasi, and Huggins Duri has been postponed once more.

The delay arose due to the state’s application to introduce an email extract as evidence, supporting claims by a witness.

Kuwadzana 5, Harare- Two young lives, Junior Makwindi, 4, and Tinotenda Tineyi Maketo, 6, were tragically lost to electrocution while they slept. The cause of this devastating event was traced back to a malfunctioning refrigerator.

Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, serving as the National Police spokesperson, shared details of the occurrence, stating, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a sad incident in which Junior Makwindi and Tinotenda Tineyi Maketo were electrocuted whilst sleeping in a room at a house in Kuwadzana 5, Harare on the 19th of February, 2024.” He further explained, “Preliminary investigations by the Police have revealed that the victims were electrocuted after getting in contact with an upright refrigerator which had an electrical fault.”

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested Deputy Provincial Mining Director for Mashonaland West, Junior Mudyawabikwa and former Surveyor with Ministry of Mines and Mining Development, Robson Farayi Chinanayi for extortion.

The duo allegedly extorted USD5 000.00 from an applicant for a mining certificate.Mudyawabikwa and Chinanayi will appear at Chinhoyi Magistrate court today (Tuesday, 20 February 2024).

By A Correspondent| Fired top judge Justice Erica Ndewere has resuscitated her challenge over her “unlawful” dismissal from office in 2021 by dragging President Emmerson Mnangagwa to court.

Ndewere was fired by Mnangagwa after a tribunal set up to investigate her recommended that she be dismissed for gross incompetence.

The judge was accused by the Judicial Service Commission of wrongly quashing a prison sentence imposed on a thief and taking too long to deliver judgments.

However, Ndewere claimed that she was being victimised for resisting Chief Justice Luke Malaba’s interference.

In her submission, Ndewere cited Mnangagwa as the respondent, arguing that he failed to fulfil a constitutional obligation enshrined in section 187(8) when he removed her from the office of a judge on account of the “invalid, unlawful recommendations” of the Simbi Mubako Tribunal.

She also argues that Mnangagwa did not file an opposing affidavit, dismissing the one filed by Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs minister Ziyambi Ziyambi as inadmissible hearsay.

“He (Mnangagwa) cannot delegate this responsibility in such serious matters taking into account that the constitutional obligation enshrined in section 187(8) of the Constitution is specific and one which is only exercisable by him. Consequently, there is no valid opposing affidavit before the court,” the application read.

“In any event, the opposing affidavit purportedly deposed to by Ziyambi Ziyambi constitutes inadmissible hearsay. Ziyambi Ziyambi is the Minister of Legal and Parliamentary Affairs. He does not share the constitutional obligation enshrined in section 187(8) of the Constitution with the President.

“He does not know what the President received, read and considered when he removed me from office. Only the President does and no affidavit confirming the averments in Ziyambi Ziyambi’s affidavit.

“Therefore, his affidavit is inadmissible hearsay. In terms of the rules, only a deponent who can swear positively as to the facts can make an affidavit and Ziyambi Ziyambi, who could not have been lawfully involved in the entire process, cannot, therefore, swear positively to the averments he has made.”

Ndewere argues that Mnangagwa deliberately misconstrued Proclamation 3 of 2021, which gave the Simbi Mubako Tribunal an “option” to extend its lifespan by a further six months “after swearing in of members”.

Ndewere says Mnangagwa acted on invalid recommendations in her dismissal.

“Applicant was discriminated against when SI [Statutory Instrument] 107/12 was not followed in her case, but SI 107/12 was used by the Chief Justice to appoint a panel of judges to investigate male colleagues Justice Benjamin Bere, Justice Webster Chinhamora and Justice Thompson Mabhikwa,” she averred in her submissions.

“Applicant was discriminated against when she was singled out for charges for misconduct for breaching section 19(1) of Statutory Instrument 107/12, but no other judge who had not completed reviews of reserved judgments within three months was charged for misconduct.

“Justice Benjamin Chikowero expressed surprise in his court judgment when he recused himself from hearing my case, that he was seeing his name in a memorandum dated February 6, 2019, along with my name and other judges for allegedly not completing his work, but he was never charged and no one ever spoke to him about it.

“Other 17 judges who were mentioned in several memoranda along with me were never charged for gross misconduct,” Ndewere submitted.

Ndewere was suspended in 2020 before her dismissal the following year after granting bail to then MDC Alliance deputy chairperson Job Sikhala.

The National Railway of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has reported that one of its trains plying Mutare-Mozambique was involved in a fatal accident that claimed the lives of three crew members.

In a statement, Tuesday morning, NRZ said:

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) would like to inform the nation of a fatal train accident which took place between Mutare and Machipanda around 2100hrs on Monday, 19 February 2024. Preliminary investigations suggest that the locomotive, which was pulling 14 wagons laden with nine (9) export chrome concentrates and five (5) granite blocks, may have suffered a brake failure leading to a runaway which culminated in the train failing to negotiate a sharp curve thereby falling into the gorge. Sadly the three (3) NRZ Crews were trapped and could not make it to safety. Their identities cannot be divulged until their next of kin have been advised. The NRZ board, management and staff would like to express sincere condolences to the families of the hardworking, dedicated crew members who shall always be remembered by the Railways family. Our thoughts are with their families and we pray for God to comfort and strengthen them in these very difficult times. Investigations are still underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, after which full details will be disclosed.

Responding to a Daily News story where government was announcing the end of demolitions, Kasukuwere said it didn’t make sense as the damage had already been done.

By A Correspondent| The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (ZIMSEC) has announced that Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates for 2022 and June 2023 examinations are now out and ready for collection at schools and centres.

Posting on social media, ZIMSEC said the certificates have already been dispatched for collection urging candidates to collect.

“Ordinary and Advanced Level certificates for November 2022 were released and sent to provinces for further collection by centres in August 2023.June 2023 Ordinary and Advanced level certificates were sent out in December 2023.Contact your school/ centre to collect your certificates,” said ZIMSEC.

Meanwhile, ZIMSEC has announced examination fees for the 2024 June and November sittings with government chipping in to subsidize especially for rural learners.

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has returned home from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he attended the 37th Ordinary Session of the Africa Union Summit.

The President was welcomed at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport by the two Vice Presidents, General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga and Colonel (Rtd) Cde Kembo Mohadi, Minister of Defence Cde Oppah Muchinguri Kashiri, service chiefs and senior government officials.

The President attended the official opening of the African Union Summit this Saturday before witnessing the unveiling of a statue for the late African luminary, Julius Kambarage Nyerere this Sunday morning.

Earlier last week, President Mnangagwa also attended the World Government Summit in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which focused on issues to do with shaping future governments on the globe.

During the two summits, President Mnangagwa underscored the need for Africa to build resilient education systems and for Zimbabwe to tap into the latest technologies to propel the country’s development agenda.
