Key Facts About Malaria Prevention

Key facts

Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused by parasites that are transmitted to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.

It is preventable and curable.

In 2021, there were an estimated 247 million cases of malaria worldwide.
The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 619 000 in 2021.
The WHO African Region carries a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2021, the region was home to 95% of malaria cases and 96% of malaria deaths. Children under 5 accounted for about 80% of all malaria deaths in the Region.
Overview

Malaria is an acute febrile illness caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are spread to people through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes. There are 5 parasite species that cause malaria in humans, and 2 of these species – P. falciparum and P. vivax – pose the greatest threat. P. falciparum is the deadliest malaria parasite and the most prevalent on the African continent. P. vivax is the dominant malaria parasite in most countries outside of sub-Saharan Africa.

The first symptoms – fever, headache and chills – usually appear 10–15 days after the infective mosquito bite and may be mild and difficult to recognize as malaria. Left untreated, P. falciparum malaria can progress to severe illness and death within a period of 24 hours.

In 2021, nearly half of the world’s population was at risk of malaria. Some population groups are at considerably higher risk of contracting malaria and developing severe disease: infants, children under 5 years of age, pregnant women and patients with HIV/AIDS, as well as people with low immunity moving to areas with intense malaria transmission such as migrant workers, mobile populations and travellers.

Disease burden
According to the latest World malaria report, there were 247 million cases of malaria in 2021 compared to 245 million cases in 2020. The estimated number of malaria deaths stood at 619 000 in 2021 compared to 625 000 in 2020.

Over the 2 peak years of the pandemic (2020–2021), COVID-related disruptions led to about 13 million more malaria cases and 63 000 more malaria deaths.

The WHO African Region continues to carry a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2021 the Region was home to about 95% of all malaria cases and 96% of deaths. Children under 5 years of age accounted for about 80% of all malaria deaths in the Region.

Four African countries accounted for just over half of all malaria deaths worldwide: Nigeria (31.3%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (12.6%), United Republic of Tanzania (4.1%) and Niger (3.9%).

Prevention
Over the last 2 decades, expanded access to WHO-recommended malaria prevention tools and strategies – including effective vector control and the use of preventive antimalarial drugs – has had a major impact in reducing the global burden of this disease.

Vector control
Vector control is a vital component of malaria control and elimination strategies as it is highly effective in preventing infection and reducing disease transmission. The 2 core interventions are insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS).

Progress in global malaria control is threatened by emerging resistance to insecticides among Anopheles mosquitoes. As described in the latest World malaria report, other threats to ITNs include insufficient access, loss of nets due to the stresses of day-to-day life outpacing replacement, and changing behaviour of mosquitoes, which appear to be biting early before people go to bed and resting outdoors, thereby evading exposure to insecticides.

Preventive chemotherapies
Preventive chemotherapy is the use of medicines, either alone or in combination, to prevent malaria infections and their consequences. It requires giving a full treatment course of an antimalarial medicine to vulnerable populations (generally infants, children under 5 years of age and pregnant women) at designated time points during the period of greatest malarial risk, regardless of whether the recipients are infected with malaria.

Preventive chemotherapy includes perennial malaria chemoprevention (PMC), seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC), intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy (IPTp) and school-aged children (IPTsc), post-discharge malaria chemoprevention (PDMC) and mass drug administration (MDA).

These safe and cost-effective strategies are intended to complement ongoing malaria control activities, including vector control measures, prompt diagnosis of suspected malaria, and treatment of confirmed cases with antimalarial medicines.

Vaccine
Since October 2021, WHO also recommends broad use of the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine among children living in regions with moderate to high P. falciparum malaria transmission.

The vaccine has been shown to significantly reduce malaria, and deadly severe malaria, among young children.

“Dead Man Turns Up Alive”

By A Correspondent- A man believed to be dead turned up alive eight months after his cremation in a sh0cking case of mistaken identity.

Deepak Balakrishnan Kandi was officially declared dead following his cremation ceremony before police discovered him alive in the town of Margao in Goa, India.

The 36-year-old was found in a hotel in the old station road area on Tuesday night.

Police was transferred to the custody of Kerala police, who had been searching for the man after it became apparent a body cremated months earlier was not his.

Sources claim Deepak went missing on June 7 last year from the town of Meppayur, which is in the Kerala district and around 540km south of Margao.

A missing person’s report was filed at the local police station before a body of a man recovered from a beach in Kerala in July and wrongfully identified as Deepak.

Deepak’s family performed the final rites, but days later, police discovered the cremated body in fact belonged to Irshad, a native of Panthirkkara in Kerala, who had also gone missing.

A DNA test was then carried out to confirm the remains of the man cremated were not Deepak’s and a major search was launched.

He was then discovered by officers during a routine surveillance of hotels.

Corruption Accused Duo Seek ED, Chiwenga Audience

By A Correspondent- An alleged attempt to bribe President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga by executives from the Industrial Development Corporation of Zimbabwe (IDC) using fertilisers is being investigated by the country’s anti-graft body, it has been revealed.

Disgruntled IDC employees triggered the investigation by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) after they presented a dossier of alleged corrupt activities that included the flouting of tender procedures.

They claimed IDC general manager Winstone Makamure and chairperson Tome allegedly purchased fertilisers without following the due tender process and tried to donate them to Mnangagwa and Chiwenga.

Makamure and Tome were allegedly trying to influence the two leaders to give them an audience so that they could defend themselves against corruption allegations rocking the biggest state-owned industrial institution.

ome is pushing to be appointed substantive general manager so that he can cover up his shenanigans,” read part of the dossier submitted to Zacc.

“He favours management instead of general staff in terms of salaries and benefits.

“Resultantly, the chairman and the general manager are in connivance to ensure that their misdeeds are covered up.

“They bought 30 tonnes of fertilisers from (a company named) and donated to HE (Mnangagwa) and VP (Chiwenga) to buy their audience, but both refused to entertain them and just told them to leave the fertilisers in Kwekwe.z

They haven’t met them up to now. The company is struggling to pay for the fertiliser up to now.”

nyway Mutambudzi the chief director for presidential communications, yesterday said he could not comment on a matter that was under investigation.

“It would be improper for me to comment on a matter that is under probe by a constitutional institution,” Mutambudzi told The Standard.

“We would not want to interfere with the investigations. Zacc can answer to that.”

Zacc spokesperson Thandiwe Mlobane confirmed the developments and said the matter was being investigated under case number HCR26/01/23.

“I can confirm that Zacc received the report from IDC staff and like all other reports, it will be investigated,” Mlobane said.

The IDC executives are said to enjoy protection from some named top government officials.

Zacc investigators are said to have descended at the IDC offices on January 24 and served the institution with a warrant of search and seizure.

The aggrieved employees accused Makamure and Tome of abusing power by employing their relatives and giving them influential posts.

They were also accused of allocating company vehicles to their allies within the company and the vehicles were allegedly being used for personal business.

The workers claimed IDC incurred unnecessary costs from overstaffing and vehicle maintenance as the two were allegedly creating new posts in the organisation.

Contacted for comment, Tome said he was in a meeting. He had not responded by the time of going to print.

Makamure also did not respond to questions sent to him.

IDC is mandated to identify, develop and implement new and existing industries and industrial undertakings that promotes decentralisation of sustainable industrial development, equitable employment and empowerment opportunities in Zimbabwe..

The state-owned investment group has vast investments covering vehicle assembling, cement and chemical manufacturing, real estate, fertiliser production, edible oils manufacturing, mining, and industrial engineering among many others.

Gvt Cracks On Drug Lords

By A Correspondent- A major campaign against drug suppliers has been launched by the police with Government backing in Harare, with 10 people arrested in the first hours yesterday.

“No to dangerous drugs and illicit substances” came as Government urged the police to redouble efforts against drug lords supplying unwanted substances to youths.

The Government sees rounding up drug kingpins would help save young people, many of whom were struggling with drugs.

Police in Harare will now man roadblocks and stop and search motorists and even passengers boarding vehicles.

Early in the launch yesterday, more than 10 people were arrested after they were found in possession of dangerous drugs such as mbanje and broncleer cough syrups popularly known as bronco.

The suspects, who are now assisting with investigations, will appear in court soon.

One of the suspects, Munyaradzi Mudyavaranzi, was found in possession of 50 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup while boarding a private vehicle.

He alleged that the couch syrup had been sent to him from someone in South Africa.

Another drug dealer was found with a small bag containing several sachets of mbanje.

Police will also be arresting users, but largely to lead them to where they bought the drugs.

Addressing journalists, permanent secretary for Harare Metropolitan Province Mr Tafadzwa Muguti said during the launch yesterday they were also educating motorists and the public on the dangers of drug abuse among the youths.

“What we have done today (yesterday) is just an awareness campaign,” he said.

“The roadblock was meant to educate the general citizens on the plight of drugs within Harare Province. As you know Harare Province is now becoming a haven of drug lords. This is our response to the drug lords as Harare Metropolitan Province.

“We are fed up and the citizens are also fed up. Together with the Zimbabwe Republic Police we have basically responded not only by raising more awareness, but also by setting up strategic points during this operation where we will be able to basically intercept. As you saw today we have managed to capture a number of drug lords who were actually transporting using passenger vehicles, using commuter omnibuses.”

Mr Muguti appealed to the public to report anyone dealing in drugs at any nearest police station, as some drug lords were using high density suburbs as safe havens, targeting people from the ages of 10 to 40 and 45 years.

“They are targeting even school children and we are also appealing to all headmasters and headmistresses, principals within the province to please report any signs that children might be taking drugs within schools. We are keen to end this pandemic, this evil which has come within our society. We are hoping that together with the media fraternity, together with all stakeholders, we can finally win and chase out this evil outside our homes,” Mr Muguti said.

Authorities were aware that some drug dealers have even gone to the extent of setting up offices and structures so that they can easily distribute drugs.

He appealed to night club owners not to let children below the age of 18 enter their premises as some of them were being introduced to drugs in such places.

Owners who breached the regulations risked being arrested and have their licences revoked, he said.

Mr Muguti said the police were going to arrest anyone found intoxicated so that he or she will provide them with information on where they were buying the drugs.

Officer Commanding Harare Province, Commissioner Wonder Tembo, said they were equally concerned about issues to do with drugs and they had come up with various measures to ensure that there was order.

“So many school children are being involved in drug abuse and we are encouraging them to stop,” he said. “We will not allow that to continue happening because it is destroying our nation. Remember, these are the future leaders and if it continues like that it means we will not have leaders tomorrow.”

Comm Tembo said police will also continue to conduct operations and awareness campaigns against drug abuse.

Police had already identified safe houses and suspected drug dealers and will soon raid them, while police intelligence teams have been heavily deployed on the ground.

Tobva Tadii Paya Crew Resurfaces

By-Three gold panners miners, who went viral on social media after narrating how they raped sex workers and were jailed, have now been freed.

The three Romeo Chirara, Admire Chirongoma and Thabani Gaza, later known as ‘Tobva Tadii Paya’ after Chirongoma repeatedly used the phrase in the narration, were sentenced to seven years in jail in 2018.

This week, a video circulated on social media showed the trio smiling after being released from prison.
People were even taking pictures with the trio.

81yr Old Recalls Prison Horror

By A Correspondent- For 81 year old Nyatsamba Sairos of Budiriro, Harare, his horrific experience at the hands of police on January 14, 2023 has left an indelible mark in his life.

On that fateful day, Sairos woke up early morning as usual planning to tend his crops a distance away from home, but later decided to visit his long-time friend who stays in the same neighbourhood.

This marked the beginning of his real life drama which would last the next 14 days.

He says on his way to see his friend, he was caught up in the crossfire as police swooped on opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party activists attending an unsanctioned meeting at Budiriro legislator Costa Machingauta’s house.

He was arrested alongside the CCC activists and bundled into a police truck charged with disturbing public peace in the suburb.

In a heart-wrenching interview with Heart & Soul Broadcasting Services (HStv), a radio and television web cast run by Alpha Media Holdings, Sairos still insists he was wrongly arrested.

“I was just walking along the street when I noticed a truckload of riot police officers. When I was still trying to figure out what was happening, another police officer grabbed me from behind claiming I was part of the group. I was shaken. He wanted to beat me up with a baton stick, but his colleague restrained him,” he said.

The octogenarian was then bundled into the police truck.

We were taken to Harare Central Police Station in the evening and for the next 14 days, I was in detention,” he said.

Sairos was not alone in that predicament. Another senior citizen, Misheck Nyembe (72), was also accosted and bundled into the same police truck after being found walking in the streets.

“A violent police officer grabbed me from behind and shoved me into the truck. I fell and hurt my back. I can’t even sit up properly now. They took us to Budiriro Police Station and they suggested that we pay bail. I don’t know what happened, we were later instructed to get into the car and we found ourselves being locked into cells at Harare Central Police Station,” Nyembe said.

After their initial remand appearance, they were sent to remand prison.

Sairos said the prison cells were a horror sight.

“The place one sleeps is not good, the water is unhygienic and the food is unhealthy. Any time, you can get a serious illness because of the bad conditions there. One of the people who was arrested with us caught COVID-19,” he said.

Nyembe chipped in saying it was difficult to survive in prison because of his health condition and advanced age.

“Prisoners are sleeping piled up like stones. If you want to go to the toilet at night, you walk on top of sleeping inmates. Since we are already old, we end up messing up ourselves before reaching the toilet. I don’t even know my crime. I was living nicely with my children and grandchildren.

“We were put in D Class. Some of the wardens wanted to beat me up because I kept standing up due to backache. Other prisoners were very understanding, they would give me water to bath. Now I am always scratching because of bites from lice,” Nyembe added.

For Sairos, he says his greatest pain emanated from the fact that he lost income while in incarceration because he survives on menial jobs.

“I survive on menial jobs and for 14 days in remand prison, I have lost income and I do not know how my family has been surviving. I am bitter because the police just picked us randomly without considering our ages,” he said.

Added Sairos: “I am a farmer, I look after my children. I have a big family and I also want change because there are no jobs. I have grandchildren that I look after. The mother of one of the grandchildren died when she (the grandchild) was less than two years old.”

Nyembe said for seven decades, he has been trying hard to stay out of trouble, and prison was a bitter pill for him to swallow.

“What pains me is that our family has a history of staying out of trouble. My grandfather died in 1968 at the age of 115, he was never arrested,” he said.

“My father died in 2021 at the age of 101, he was never arrested and now I am 72 years and had never been arrested.

“This is so painful to me because I did not transgress in any way, but I was arrested, and have broken the family’s tradition of living a crime-free life.”

Their lawyer Chris Mhike, who managed to secure their bail on January 29, said the two should never have been arrested.

“I am happy they are out, but they should never have been arrested. Their arrest was unjustifiable,” Mhike said.

Results For Over 4.9k Exam Cheats Nullified

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) yesterday released the 2022 Ordinary Level examination results, with 4 961 candidates having their results nullified for cheating.

The examinations were marred by several irregularities.

Candidates who had pre-access to question papers at different examination centres were identified during the writing of the examinations and also at the marking of scripts and grade review stages,” Zimsec chairperson Eddie Mwenje said in a statement.

“The results of such candidates were nullified for the subjects in question in accordance with the Zimsec Act section 34. Candidates, headmasters and members of the public who were caught posting question papers on WhatsApp and those buying them were arrested and appeared in court.

“All other practices that contravened the Zimsec Act were brought to the attention of Zimsec by respective schools. As a result of the combined investigation reports from schools, and the identification of culprits at the marking and grade reviews stages, a total of 4 961 candidates had results nullified. This number is out of 278 760 who registered for the Ordinary Level examination. The number represents 1,78% of the total candidate entry.”

wenje said the overall pass rate for last year’s examinations increased by 2,62% to 28.96% compared to 26,34% recorded in 2021.

“A total of 278 760 candidates sat for the November 2022 examinations as compared to 249 914 candidates who sat for the same examinations in 2021. There was an increase in the candidature of 28 846, thus translating to an increase of 11,54%.

“In 2022, a total of 183 584 wrote five or more subjects and 53 169 passed five or more subjects with a grade C or better giving an overall pass rate of 28,96% as compared to l63 179 candidates who wrote five or more subjects in 2021, with 42 985 passing five or more subjects with a Grade C or better yielding a pass rate of 26,34%. The statistics show that the 2022 pass rate increased by 2,62% from 2021.”

Mwenje added that school candidates who wrote five or more subjects in 2022 were 162 813 and 49 501 obtained Grade C or better, yielding a pass rate of 30,4 % as compared to that of 2021 where 148 005 wrote five or more subjects with 40 473 obtaining a Grade C or better in five or more subjects.

Private candidates who wrote five or more subjects were 20 771 and 3 668 obtained grade C or better in five or more subjects, which also translates to a pass rate of 17,66% as compared to that of 2021 where 15 174 wrote five or more subjects with 2 512 obtaining a grade C or better in five or more subjects resulting in a pass rate of 16,55%. This shows a 1,11% increase in the 2022 pass rate for private candidates.”

ZPCS Battles With 500 Dangerous Criminals With Mental Illness

By- The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) said it has 465 dangerous criminals with mental illness against a holding capacity of 150 at its chikurubi maximum security prison.

One of the detained mental patient inmates is Zimbabwe’s most prolific serial killer, Bright Zhantali, who is also undergoing medical evaluation to determine the state of his mental health.
The Sunday Mail has gathered that about 408 inmates committed to the unit have been classified as criminal mental patients (CMPs), which means their criminal cases are still pending before the courts.
The rest have been classified as detained mental patients (DMPs), a classification reserved for convicted criminals with psychiatric disorders.
About 55 percent of those housed in the unit were involved or are suspected of having committed offences such as murder and attempted murder, while 45 percent are either facing charges or have been convicted of serious offences such as rape and armed robbery.
Zhantali is accused of raping and killing 23 women during a year-long reign of terror that spanned Marondera, Goromonzi, Rusape, Mutare and Macheke.
The suspected serial killer, who hails from Dandamera Township in Concession, Mashonaland Central Province, is believed to have confessed to most of the murders, even suggesting that he may have killed more people.
He is suspected of having committed seven murders between January and March last year.
The Chikurubi prison psychiatrist, Chief Superintendent Christopher Njanjeni, said: “Yes, I can confirm that Zhantali is in the Chikurubi psychiatric unit, undergoing observation and treatment.
“We currently have 465 mental patients in our psychiatric unit against a carrying capacity of 150 patients.
“We have two categories of psychiatric patients — criminal mental patients and detained mental patients.
“Currently, we have a total of 465 mental patients, of which 408 are CMPs and 57 are DMPs.”
He said inmates were only committed to the unit on the orders of a magistrate.
“These people are there for medical investigations after a special ruling by a magistrate when an accused person starts to develop signs of mental illness.
“When a prisoner starts showing signs of mental health problems, the officer-in-charge of the prison reports the case to the nearest magistrate.
“A special board of professionals will then sit to determine whether the patient can be confirmed to be mentally disturbed, in consultation with professional psychiatric medical practitioners.”
He said the inmates are under the care of specially trained security officers.
“On treatment, our manual is the Mental Health Act, which dictates how mental patients are treated, in line with national and international guidelines.
“We have officers who provide physical security and medical staff, who are involved in the management and dispensing of treatment drugs.
“We also have psychologists, who continuously monitor and provide psychological support to the patients.”
The unit, he said, was presently beset by a range of challenges, including inadequate accommodation and clothing for inmates, as well as power outages.
“Medication for the inmates is also a challenge.
“We are currently using first-generation drugs to manage the patients because the modern second-generation drugs are not available.
Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) national spokesperson Chief Superintendent Meya Kanyezi said there are plans to expand Chikurubi’s psychiatric unit.
“Those who are willing can come on board to help us and the mental patients. These inmates are our brothers, sisters and also Zimbabweans like us,” she said.
“When a person is detained, we expect society to visit him or her.
“When people are sentenced and detained, relatives usually desert them and that is also the case with mental health patients in our custody.
“Society and relatives must visit the patients and bring them goodies from home, which also helps as a form of therapy because, as you know, as ZPCS, we take a correctional approach to the rehabilitation of prisoners.”
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Ms Angeline Munyeriwa said the authority was guided by the Mental Health Act when dealing with matters pertaining to mental illness or suspected mental illness in accused persons.
“Where an inmate is on remand awaiting trial or during the course of a trial exhibits signs of mental illness and it is brought to the attention of the prison authorities or the knowledge of the prosecutor, the prison authorities or the prosecutor is enjoined in terms of Section 27 (of the Mental Health Act) to report the fact to the magistrate,” she said.
“The magistrate will then make an order directing the accused person be examined by two doctors.”
The examination is meant to inquire into the accused’s state of mind.
“If the doctors make the same finding that the accused is not suffering from mental illness, then there will be no need for a further examination or psychiatric examination.”
However, if both doctors conclude that the accused person is showing signs of mental illness, “then the accused person will be detained in an institution designated for such a purpose for further care and management by a psychiatrist”.
But, if the doctors arrive at contradictory conclusions, an opinion from a third medical practitioner will be sought, “and the court will be guided by the three reports”.
Only the medical experts are qualified to make a finding that an accused person is genuinely suffering from a mental illness.

Zanu PF Frog-Marches Villagers To Voter Registration Centres

By-Zanu PF has started frog-marching villagers to voter registration centres.

The party’s Youth League is leading the coercive programme, which starts Monday.

Youth League’s chairman for Harare province, Emmanuel Mahachi, told state media at the weekend that : “As we are approaching elections, we have seen that a considerable number of youths in Harare are yet to register to vote. Starting on Monday (tomorrow), we will be encouraging youths in all constituencies in the province and offering them transport to register to vote.
“ZEC (Zimbabwe Electoral Commission) has for now closed registration centres in constituencies and wards, so people can now only register in the city centre (Cecil House and Market Square). We have seen that our youths may need assistance in terms of transportation to these registration centres,” he said.

Mahachi said youths are continuing to see the benefits of supporting and joining the party through various youth-centred projects championed by President Mnangagwa.
He urged the party’s youths to refrain from being lured into campaigning for individuals before a directive has been given by the party leadership.
“For now, we are campaigning for our President because we have not yet been instructed to start choosing candidates. So, we are urging the youths to remain steadfast and not be swayed by aspiring primary elections candidates before we have been advised to do so by the party leadership,” said Mahachi.

Zanu PF Plans For An Early Election

By- The Zanu PF-led government may dissolve Parliament and call an early election, a legal think tank Veritas has predicted.

Zimbabwe is supposed to hold general elections between July 27 and August 26 2023 but this may not stop the government from calling for early polls, reported NewsDay.

The government is reportedly fast-tracking passage of the delimitation report as well as election-related legislation in Parliament and this is seen as part of a wider plot to call an early election that will find the opposition unprepared.

Veritas, in its latest weekly Election Watch report, said:

There are straws in the wind which may point to an early election. Government may be trying to get important Bills through Parliament quickly so that Parliament can close for an early election.

Some of the Bills could be seen as strengthening the ruling party’s grip on society in advance of an election: the PVOs [Private Voluntary Organisations] Amendment Bill and the ‘Patriot Bill’, for example.

To say there have been problems with delimitation is putting it mildly.

The preliminary delimitation report that was presented to the President on December 26 was deeply flawed, as we pointed out in our Election Watches 1/2023 and 2/2023 and as Parliament pointed out in its report to the President.

No one seems to like the report, except perhaps the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission and her deputy.

Some of the outstanding Bills that are before Parliament include the Judicial Laws Amendment Bill, National Security Council Bill, Prisons and Correctional Services Bill, Child Justice Bill, Police Amendment Bill and the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Bill. Veritas said:

As we explained in our earlier Election Watches, delimitation must be completed at least six months before polling day in an election if it is to be used for that election (section 161(2) of the Constitution) and — unless Parliament is dissolved early — the next general election must be held between July 28 and August 26 this year.

So if this delimitation report is to be used in the mid-year election, it must have been published between January 28 (for an election held on July 28) and February 26 (for an election on August 26).

The report is already too late for a July election, and the deadline for an August election is fast approaching and probably cannot be met.

… If a final delimitation report cannot be produced in time, and existing electoral boundaries remain in place, an early election will be easier to arrange because it will not be necessary to reorganise and relocate polling stations, constituency centres and so on.

On Friday, 03 February, Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairperson Priscilla Chigumba was at State House to deliver to President Emmerson Mnangagwa the draft of the final report on the delimitation of constituency and ward boundaries which takes note of concerns that he and Parliament raised.

Chigumba said the draft report, which the President will now go through, could be gazetted in the next 14 days.

Govt De-Registers Accused Schools

THE Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) will deregister schools and examination centres complicit in the leakage of examination papers while the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education will deal with headmasters who will be fingered in the malpractices that threaten to bring the country’s education sector into disrepute.
The stiff measures by Zimsec come after 5 156 Advanced and Ordinary level candidates’ results were nullified for having pre-access to examination papers in the October to December 2022 national examinations, with suspicion that some school heads made the papers available to candidates before the exams.

The A-Level results were released on 13 January with Zimsec withholding results for 195 candidates while the ‘O’ Levels ones, where results for 4 961 candidates were nullified, came out on Friday.

Zimsec board chairperson Professor Eddie Mwenje told Sunday News yesterday that the examination body was committed to upholding the integrity of the country’s examination system and any deviant behaviour will be met with severe punishment.

“As you might be aware, there are some headmasters that are alleged to have opened examination papers. If that was a distribution centre, it means it would receive papers before the date of the examination, we will deregister them from being a centre.

Also, if it comes out that the administration there was involved, the Ministry (of Primary and Secondary Education) will take the necessary action.”

Prof Mwenje said after the compilation of the list they will have a clear picture of how many examination centres were complicit in the examination malpractice and they will be de-registered, which means they will cease to be distribution centres and will not administer Zimsec examinations.

“Centres have to register and qualify to administer Zimsec examinations. They have to adhere to Zimsec principles. If they fail to adhere, we simply deregister them, they will have proved their unsuitability and if the headmaster is corrupt, we do not have the capacity to remove them because we do not employ them, their employer will deal with them.

If these are private schools we just say until you put your things in order you cannot be a centre, so the students have to write the examinations somewhere else.”

Zimsec director Dr Lazarus Nembabware concurred with Prof Mwenje.

“You would appreciate that results have just come out. We are therefore in the process of fact-gathering to identify all examination centres that were complicit in the examination malpractice. When our investigations are done, we will name them and deregister them,” said Dr Nembabware.

He, however, could not be drawn into mentioning the timelines but hinted that it should be before the next national examinations.

“I cannot give you a specific time-frame because after we are done with the process, we take our work to the examination committee which is responsible for the examination which then recommends to the main board what action should be taken, but of course most of the centres who leaked examination papers will be deregistered.”

He added that Zimsec was committed to ensuring that all leakages of examination papers were plugged out and would do everything in its power to tighten its security systems.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education director of communications and advocacy, Mr Taungana Ndoro applauded Zimsec for putting measures in place to tighten security and improve the manner in which examinations in the country were handled.

“We are behind Zimsec. We want them to do their job without interference. Let them investigate and bring out their findings and we will advise on our recommendations,” he said – state media

Mubobobo Man Arrested

A WOMAN who was queuing at a bank in the city centre nearly jumped out of her skin when she felt something hard and slimy sliding up and down her back.

To her horror, when she turned to check, she allegedly saw a red-eyed man furiously rubbing his “fully cocked AK-47” against her buttocks.

The 21-year-old woman cannot be named for ethical reasons.

The incident, which police confirmed, occurred at a bank situated at Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street and 9th Avenue last Saturday.

While the woman was queuing for cash she felt something strange rubbing against her bums and she cringed.

Upon checking, she saw Tedious Muchavheruka (38) who resides at Makokoba suburb in Bulawayo standing behind her making sexual movements on her.

A witness said Muchavheruka was wearing a condom, panting and had a glazed look in his eyes.

“The woman said she felt something strange in her private parts at the same time she felt as if she was falling into a trance.

“Upon checking behind her stood a man who looked as if he was having real sex with her as he was panting and was holding his “angry” manhood in his hands,” said the witness.

Seeing that he had been caught in action he tried to shove his trouser-snake back into its natural habitat but it was too late.

“The woman charged at him and he fled. There was a collective gasp from people in the queue and they stood in shock as improbable scene unfolded,” said another bystander.

The bystander added:

“The woman reported the incident to the police. After about 30 minutes the man returned and he was arrested.”

Witnesses said a heated debate ensued among the people in the queue with some saying the man was using umubobobo – supernatural sex without physical contact – while others maintained Muchavheruka was simply masturbating.

He appeared before Tredgold magistrate Max Sibanda facing indecent assault charges.

He was remanded out of custody to Wednesday next week on $30 000 bail on condition that he reside at the address he gave at the court.

He was ordered not to interfere with State witnesses or the complainant until the matter is finalised.

He was also ordered to report at Mzilikazi Police Station on Mondays between 6AM and 6PM.- B- Metro

Man Cleared Of Child Rape

A 28-year-old man residing at Baghdad, Empumalanga in Hwange was on Thursday acquitted of rape charges by magistrate Mr Mark Dzira at the Hwange magistrates court.

Leon Msumba was facing one count of rape in which he was alleged to have raped his friend’s three-year-old daughter. However, he was acquitted after regional magistrate Mr Dzira said the State found the evidence unreliable.

Allegations against Msumba were that on 23 December at around 2pm, he visited the complainant’s mother and later spent the night. At a time, unknown to the complainant’s mother, the accused was alleged to have sexually assaulted the child who had slept besides the accused person in the kitchen. The court heard that on the day in question, six male figures went in and out of the complainant’s house.

The complainant’s mother also left her daughter for about two hours to escort her boyfriend who had visited, leaving the child with two unnamed men in the house.

Presenting his judgement, magistrate Dzira said the state failed to establish a prima facie case against the accused, leading to his acquittal.-state media

Will ZEC Hold Free And Fair Elections This Year?

Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday received a draft preliminary delimitation report from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) —

which was amended after submissions from both Parliament and the President himself, as per Constitutional requirement — and is expected to favour the elections management body with his comments, after which the statutory body will compile the final document for gazetting, having either taken the comments into account or disregarded them, it has been learnt.

There were erroneous reports that the document that was handed over to President Mnangagwa was the final delimitation report.

Deputy Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet (Presidential Communications) Mr George Charamba told The Sunday Mail yesterday that the President will submit his comments to ZEC after studying the draft preliminary delimitation report, as amended.

“Following submission of the preliminary report by the ZEC (Zimbabwe Electoral Commission), that action put in train two sets of reactions: One from Parliament (of Zimbabwe) and another one from His Excellency, the President. Both these are by way of feedback to ZEC’s preliminary delimitation report. Both sets of reactions were given to ZEC, and the first to do so was Parliament of Zimbabwe, through the President, as required by the Constitution. Then the President later sent his own response to the preliminary delimitation report,” said Mr Charamba.

“Out of those two responses, ZEC then produced a draft preliminary report with the new amendments, which means amendments from Parliament and amendments noted by the President. What the chairlady of ZEC (Justice Priscilla Chigumba) gave the President (on Friday) was the preliminary report, as amended by the reactions from both Parliament and from the President.”

ZEC handed over the initial preliminary report to President Mnangagwa on December 26, 2022.

Both the National Assembly and Senate were subsequently summoned last month to debate the report after it was tabled in Parliament.

On January 19, Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda then handed over its comments on the proposed amendments to the delimitation report to President Mnangagwa, who later transmitted it to ZEC as required by the law.

He also submitted his own comments on January 23.

After going through the reactions from both the President and Parliament, ZEC then produced the draft preliminary delimitation report, which was submitted to the former on Friday.

“The President, in turn, will go through that preliminary report, as amended. Depending on how he views it, he will then give ZEC his final comment on that draft preliminary report, as amended,” added Mr Charamba.

“Those would be his final comments on the matter, and ZEC will exercise its Constitutional right to either take them into account or to discard them, because the Constitution gives ZEC the final say on the compilation of what then becomes the final delimitation report. So, the final delimitation report is then what will be given to the President for gazetting.”

This is the first delimitation report that would be produced under the new Constitution adopted in 2013. – state media

Guardiola Blesses Joao Cancelo

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola has revealed the reason behind Joao Cancelo’s surprise switch to Bayern Munich.

The Portuguese star left Etihad last week, signing a six-month loan contract with the Bundesliga giants.

The deal has an option to make it permanent in the summer, with Bayern paying €70m to City.

Explaining the reason behind the departure, Guardiola admitted Cancelo was unhappy with his role at the Etihad.

The gaffer told reporters at press conference on Friday: “After the World Cup, we had a pre-season and decided to play a little different.

“I liked what I watched, so I gave more time to other players. His personality, like mine, he loves to play. He trains the best but the situation, he doesn’t play much.

“In the last year, [he was] one of the players with more minutes. He needs to play to be happy, so we decided to let him go to Munich.”

Pep added: “If Bayern Munich want Joao, it’s because he’s an exceptional player. I won’t say a bad word, his work ethic, passion, skill, everyone knows it. It happened one or two days before the window. Always, I am pleased with the squad.”

Cancelo established himself as one of the best fullbacks in the EPL and was part of the PFA’s Team of the Year for the last two seasons.

His game time was reduced in recent weeks following the emergence of academy youngster Rico Lewis.

The 28-year-old has since made his Bayern debut, featuring in Wednesday’s 4-0 victory over Mainz.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

CCC’s Sanctions To Influence Elections Against ZANU PF: Mavaza

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | The idea that economic growth needs good governance and good governance needs economic growth takes us to a perennial chicken-and-egg debate: Which comes first in development—good governance OR economic growth? For decades, positions have been sharply divided between those who advocate “fix governance first” and others who say “stimulate growth first.”
My research finds a surprising answer to this debate.

Dr Masimba Mavaza

Good governance is a polymorphous concept that stems from economic and political science. It is used both in the context of the management of public action and in a strategic perspective of economic development.
Devastation of Zimbabwe’s economy has its roots in one phrase ” sabotage and agency for regime change”

There are long term, medium term and short term causative factors. These factors are all external to government, meaning they are outside the control of the government and are in fact diametrically opposed to government endeavours.

In 1992 the government did what all decent governments around the world do. It recognised the sacrifices of those who were in the forefront of the liberation struggle by giving them allowances to rebuild their lives. The whites who were controlling the economy reacted adversely as they could not live with the reality of their battlefield enemies being restored to dignity. They went on an economic go-slow on production. A soft punch too the heart of the nation

The economic subotage came to a crescendo when the government legislated on the land reformation programme. The white minority, hand-in-glove with western interests, ruthlessly used both the economy and the land as weapons of mass destruction on the lifeline of Zimbabwe. The newly owners of the land were suffocated economically they could not have access to banking loans or any financial institution.

The subortage was escalated when the minority recruited black Zombabweans to front them. This was in the form of political parties so calked opposition, beginning from the Forum Party formed in 1992 to the current policy-less and constitution-less CCC. The later does not need a consititition becaise it exists to take foreign instructions.
There are medium term factors such as perenial drought and poor harvests. All these outside government control. But delivered a devastating blow to our economy. This did not reflect on good governance but purely external forces putting pressure on our governments.

Short term factors include the global pandenic, the global wars and conflict. Volatile markets and the rescession in the world economy. All these factors have impacted every nation and every island, including Britain, The EU and America. Just look at Africa’s giant across the Limpopo.

Anyone who thinks Zimbabwe is insulated from global factors is either foolish or insincere. The economy of Zimbabwe faced unending attack from the external forces using their puppets like MDC and CCC. Administration, in a context defined as the framework of rules, institutions, and practices by which authority is exercised is a key foundation of a well-functioning market economy and a major ingredient to growth and equitable development
The campaign strategy of CCC that economy was destroyed by ZANU PF is pathetic and clutching to the straw.
The history of the Zimbabwean economy shows that the problem has never been ZANU PF. If we consider the reasons for voting ZANU PF it is important that we look at the case on the round. ZANU PF can never be blamed for the economy crisis but it must be applauded for steering the country in the right direction during the economic crisis.
There is an old truism that good economics doesn’t make good politics.
In most democracies, the proposition that politicians rise or fall on the backs of how the economy performed under their watch is considered received wisdom. That famous phrase that grew out of the 1992 U.S. presidential campaign, “It’s the economy, stupid,” has been copied the world over.
But in Zimbabwe, voters prioritise factors other than good economic performance when evaluating incumbent governments. Namely, voters are said to put more stock in patronage, populism, or parochialism. As the saying goes, voters do not so much cast their vote as they vote their caste.
The quintessential example of the conundrum that good economics does little to help, and may even harm, an elected state or national leader’s future is the continuous winning of ZANU PF four decades. Business leaders revere cde MNANGAGWA and hailed him as a visionary for his sound economic management and pro-growth policies.
As we prepare for elections in few months to come we must open our eyes. It is not how the economy has performed. Our economy can not breathe it is being chalked. We must vote for progress. Vote for ZANU PF.

Malaria Preventable, Curable

Mnangagwa A Criminal Hiding Behind Bible -President Chamisa

Tinashe Sambiri|Speaking during an interview on his 45th birthday, CCC leader President Nelson
Chamisa called for the implementation of reforms before polls.

According the CCC leader, 2023 is a year of citizens victory.

Said President Chamisa:” We want reforms before elections. Our position is firm and clear, we want a credible voters roll.

Many people don’t really understand the fact that God is in it …I am wholly inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Nobody can oppose the will and purpose of God Almighty.”

” We have done a lot to win the coming polls. Mugwazo is yielding effective results.

We are not afraid of feeble attempts by the regime to stop and disrupt the citizens’ struggle.

You see we have leaders who are looting State resources at an alarming rate. When one is asked to swear before assuming office, one is supposed to serve with reverence and sincerity. Unfortunately they ( Zanu PF heavyweights) don’t comprehend the essence of swearing before God.”

Mnangagwa Plots To Ambush Chamisa

Top Nigerian Singer In S*x Scandal

By-Nigerian singer and songwriter Oxlade has been fined ₦5million after a long battle in court over his leaked s*x tape case.

An Ikeja High Court in Lagos State awarded the money, equivalent to $10,856.82, to the plaintiff only identified as Blessing – the woman who was captured in the video with the singer.

In a judgement delivered on January 24, 2023, Justice Olalekan Oresanya described the musician recording their sexual activity as “despicable, horrendous, classless and distasteful.”

This comes after Blessing, in March 2022, filed a suit before the Court seeking ₦20million damages after the sex tape leaked online.

She also demanded a declaration that the singer’s act of recording his explicit sexual acts without her knowledge amounted to flagrant contravention of enabling laws, violation of her fundamental rights to dignity, privacy and freedom from discrimination guaranteed under Sections 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended); and Articles 5 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement), Act, CAP A9, LFN, 2004.

Meanwhile, the judge ordered Oxlade to pay the sum of ₦5million damages to Blessing in two instalments of ₦3 million and ₦2 million, respectively.

Background

Oxlade went viral on social media on February 9, 2022, after a video purporting to be the Afrobeats singer, known in real life as Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman, supposedly having sex with a lady broke the internet.

The alleged tape, which was reportedly leaked on Snapchat, made its way onto the micro-blogging site shortly after it went viral.

Amnesty International Pleads With ED

By A Correspondent- A non-governmental organisation, Amnesty International, has pleaded with President Mnangagwa to reject the contentious Private Voluntary Organisation amendment Bill saying it shrinks the democratic space in Zimbabwe.

The PVO amendment bill sailed through Senate, with all senators except Morgen Komichi voting for it to be passed into law.

The bill now awaits the assent of Mnangagwa to become law.

Amnesty International director for East and Southern Africa, Tigere Chagutah in a statement said the proposed bill will cripple the civic space, derailing efforts to render humanitarian support.

“The PVO Amendment Bill in its current form threatens civic society organizations working on human rights in Zimbabwe. The proposed bill, if it becomes law, will have dire consequences, including restricting civic space and access to humanitarian support services in Zimbabwe as it will immediately render all Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), not registered as PVOs, illegal.

“This bill, if passed by the president, could be used to deny registration of human rights organizations due to the work that they do, including defending rights such as freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly.

The bill would also exacerbate the growing crackdown on civil society organizations, increase human rights violations and make it more difficult for the people to hold the government to account. There is a risk that employees and board members of NGOs could be arrested and subjected to punitive measures, including imprisonment, simply for doing their work,” said Chagutah.

The bill will give the government to monitor NGOs’ financial status and how they are used.

Government claims some NGOs are laundering money and supporting opposition political parties.

Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi has defended the bill saying the law would improve transparency of NGOs.

However, observers believe the bill will stifle NGOs which have been championing humanitarian aid with estimates saying the country will likely lose US$1 billion annually as a result of the PVO amendment.

Chagutah added: “President Mnangagwa must use his leadership position to reject this bill as it is repressive. The President must ensure that this bill is never signed into law.

Any future law must fully reflect international human rights standards and reaffirm the country’s human rights obligations towards the promotion and protection of the human rights of everyone including those who work to defend the rights of other people. NGOs must be allowed to operate freely and to do their work without any reprisals”

Woman In Soup For Paternity Lies

By A Correspondent- What would you do if a person who almost wrecked your mɑrriɑgǝ lies that they have your baby and you are forced to maintain the child for 11 years?

Well, a prominent Bulawayo pathologist Dr Roger Kruger Hendrick Chigangacha tabulated the money he spent maintaining the child, estimated the monetary value of the anguish he went through over the years because of the lie and arrived at US$163 000, which he is now demanding from the woman.

The doctor is suing his foreign-based ex-girlfriǝnd, Natasha Popova Sibanda, a former actress in the TV drama Amakorokoza, for US$163 000 for falsely attributing the patǝrnity of “their” child to him. Natasha starred as AK’s wife in the drama.

Through his lawyers Mashayamombe and Company Attorneys, Dr Chingangacha filed summons at the High Court in Bulawayo citing Sibanda as the defendant under case number HC51 / 23.

The summons were filed on 20 January 2023.

The pathologist accused his ex-girlfriǝnd of faking the paternity of her daughter who is now aged 11 years by claiming that he was the father of the girl.

However, last year in December, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) profiling was conducted on Dr Chigangacha and his purported daughter and the results convincingly disqualified the pathologist from being the girl’s biological father.

In papers before the court, Dr Chigangacha said Sibanda’s actions subjected him to humiliation, stress and a sense of betrayal.

“On 19 December 2022, and through DNA profiling carried out on me and the minor child, the profile results conclusively excluded me as being the biological father of the child. It was reasonably foreseeable or ought to have been foreseen by the defendant that her pr0miscu0us behaviour at the time of concepti0n would have resulted in me being falsely imputed fatherhood of the child,” he said.

Dr Chigangacha said despite the knowledge that he was not the father of the child, Sibanda deceitfully passed off her daughter as his.

“By reason of the defendant’s conduct, I acted on her misrepresentation and paid for all the educational requirements of the child up to December 31, 2022.

I have also expended some money in respect of travels and costs towards the general welfare and upkeep of the minor child,” he said.

Dr Chigangacha wants the court to direct Sibanda to pay him US$100 000 for her wrongful and deceitful attribution of patǝrnity of the child to him.

He also wants the court to compel the former actress to pay special damages of US$63 000 arising from the payment of the child’s education, health, and incident costs including her upkeep and welfare.

Dr Chigangacha wants the money to be paid with interest at the prescribed rate from the date of issue of summons to the date of payment in full.

He said soon after Sibanda gave birth, she granted him the naming rights of the child. Dr Chigangacha also made a sworn declaration at the registrar of births that he was the biological father of the child.

Dr Chigangacha said he was involved in an extra-marital ɑffa!r with Sibanda from 2011 until June 2012 during which they engaged in ƨǝx. Sibanda c0nceived and gave birth on May 20, 2012.

Sibanda is yet to respond to the summons. In 2014, Sibanda made headlines when she was dragged to court by Dr Chigangacha’s wife, Tholakele Ncube who accused the former actress of having an adultǝr0us relati0nship with her husband.

Ncube said Sibanda was in the habit of coming to her matrim0nial house threatening her with marching orders saying she was now the doctor’s new and l0ving wife.

Sibanda openly declared her undying l0ve for the doctor, saying Ncube should come to terms with the fact that they were now both Dr Chigangacha’s wives.

    Gvt Re- registers Closed Schools

By A Correspondent-Government has started re-registering private schools that it had shut down last year saying the move would help accommodate thousands of South Africa-based pupils likely to join their parents coming back home following expiry of their Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs) in June this year.

The returning learners will also undergo a stringent vetting process before they can be admitted into local schools, a top government official said yesterday.

The country, with a student population of six million, has a deficit of 3 000 schools.

Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro yesterday confirmed that government was regularising deregistered private schools to absorb the returning pupils.

“Processes are underway to put in place measures to adopt the learners into local schools,” he said.

“We have those schools that we call non-governmental or private schools that are in the process of being registered and regularised, and government is building more schools. We are also encouraging private players to play their role and make sure we have enough schools to cater for the deficit, particularly in the highly-populated areas,” he said.

Information ministry secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana said returning students would be assessed before enrolment.

In November 2021, the South African government announced that it would not extend the ZEPs issued in 2017 and ordered the permit holders to renew them following their expiry on December 31, 2021.

The deadline was further extended to end of June this year after only a few ZEP holders sought regularisation of their stay.

A total of 178 412 Zimbabwean nationals were granted exemptions in 2017. Zimbabwean ambassador to South Africa, David Hamadziripi announced early this week that government had launched a mapping system to facilitate identification and transportation of the returnees.

Teachers’ representatives said the returnees would exert pressure on the existing infrastructure.

“We already have a deficit of schools and teachers but more pupils are coming,” Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president Takavafira Zhou said.

“We will have bloated classes. Resources like chairs, books and others will also be in shortage. We would have hoped that the government would engage its South African counterpart for a gradual returning of our people instead of a once-off flooding of returnees. We know that an additional number of learners will worsen the plight of learners in schools.”

Zimbabwe Teachers Association secretary-general Goodwill Taderera said: “No doubt those learners will be crammed in classes because already the teacher-pupil ratio was abnormally high. Teachers are very committed but government should now take this issue seriously to avoid worsening the situation.”

Gvt Fires Warning Shots At Rogue Teachers

By A Correspondent- Government has moved to uproot rogue teachers reportedly ill-treating pupils whose parents would have failed to pay for extra lessons.

The latest case happened in Norton, Mashonaland West province, where an unidentified parent revealed that an early childhood development (ECD) class taught by one Mrs Chirombo was divided into groups,  with the teacher only attending to paid-up pupils.

“Those audios are for my child who is doing ECD at Norton 1 School. I don’t know what it means. At first I thought that she was joking, but now the child has reported this for the third time.

“My heart is in pain. I don’t know what I should do but my heart is bleeding. I don’t know how best you can help me. My child is in ECD B Diamond, taught by madam Chirombo,” the affected parent said.

Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro told NewsDay Weekender that the ministry and the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission would investigate the matter.

“Give us the names of schools, teachers and classes and we will deal with that immediately. If you can do that by Monday morning, our officials will be there. We are now waiting for whistle-blowers to give us names of teachers who are engaging in those underhand and corrupt dealings. We are waiting for people to give us information because sometimes we don’t have enough information as to who exactly is doing what.

“We are going to bring sanity into the education sector by uprooting those rotten tomatoes that have been denying our learners their constitutional right to quality education. The long arm of the law is going to catch up with those unscrupulous teachers and they will be dealt with in terms of the Code of Conduct and Prevention of Corruption Act,” Ndoro said.

He urged parents and guardians to forward names of teachers and schools involved in such malpractices.

Educators Union of Zimbabwe president Tafadzwa Munodawafa said: “Our union notes with concern the reported cases but we blame government for negligence and being short-sighted. We bemoan the decay of educational standards exhibited through classes between parents and teachers. However, we attribute the blame to the government. By failing to pay teachers a living wage, the monster called extra lessons was created.”

SA Based Zimbos Team Up With Locals. Commit Robberies

By A Correspondent- Four South Africa-based Zimbabweans appeared in court today on allegation of teaming up with six locals and committed a spate of armed robberies in and around Harare.

Deborah Mukambachaza, Gadiel Majaya, Tonderai Shingirai Murapa and Wellington Mushipe, who were all based in South Africa, appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court charged with unlawful entry, robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery.

The quartet is jointly appearing with Simbarashe Chitekete, Locadia Simeti, Alouis and Allen Mususa, Donald Sibanda and Esnath Musingo.

The 10 suspects allegedly broke into offices at Rusununguko High School in Goromonzi on January 27 and went away with laptops and US$1814 cash.

They also allegedly robbed a farm worker at Sunrising Farm in Goromonzi on November 21, 2022 and went away with US$120.

The 10 suspects were nabbed after detectives hoodwinked them into believing that they were also robbers from Beitbridge, who wanted to partner them in crime.

They were then nabbed in Harare’s city centre where they had agreed to meet on February 1 with intentions to go and rob Rusununguko High School in Goromonzi.

Man Killed, Hanged On Tree Branch

By A Correspondent- Police in Mount Darwin are hunting for suspected murderers who allegedly killed Previous Muchena (26) before hanging his body on a tree branch.

Sources close to investigations  said the body was found  on Monday with wounds on foot, chin and occiput.

“We are appealing  for information  which may lead to the arrest of suspected murderers who killed Muchena before hanging his body on a tree branch in a bushy area near Churuma  Business Centre in Mount Darwin,” said the source.

    Muzarabani Woman Acquitted

By A Correspondent- The High Court has cleared a Muzarabani woman of murder charges following the couple’s violent quarrel 14 February last year which saw her stab and kill her husband in self-defence.

Lackia Chirwa, 23, walked free after High Court judge, Esther Muremba found her to have acted in self-defence when she stabbed Promise Mukombe once in the stomach.

On the fateful night, Mukombe had allegedly threatened to kill Chirwa whom he had accused of infidelity.

Court heard he arrived home drunk at around 11pm on the day while shouting at Chirwa whom he labelled a prostitute.

Chirwa was asleep in the bedroom hut with the couple’s toddler.

It was proved that Mukombe then started assaulting his wife indiscriminately, and threatening to kill her.

Mukombe then tried to reach for an okapi knife which was in a cardboard box in their hut.

The couple started tussling each other to try and reach for the weapon with Mukombe biting his wife on her shoulder in the process.

During the scuffle, Chirwa was first to reach for the knife which she used to stab her husband once in the stomach.

Mukombe is said to have then exited the couple’s bedroom for his parents’ home and later succumbing to the injuries.

In passing her ruling, Justice Muremba said the fact that Chirwa stabbed her husband once, supports the fact that she was defending herself.

She ruled Chirwa had managed to satisfy the court that she acted in self-defence.

“The deceased was stabbed with the knife by the accused at a time when he was twisting her arm and biting her shoulder. She said she was in excruciating pain.

“Besides, the deceased had made it categorically clear that he wanted to kill her.

“In terms of s253, for the defence of self-defence to suffice, the harm caused by the accused must be caused to the attacker and not to an innocent third party. This is exactly what happened in this case.

“The accused stabbed the deceased who was attacking her and no other person.

“It was just the two of them and their small child in the bedroom.

“The accused managed to satisfy all the requirements of the defence of the person.

“The accused is therefore found not guilty and acquitted,” Muremba ruled.

    Diarrhoea Wrecks Havoc In Hre

By A Correspondent- The diarrhoea cases come after typhoid wreaked havoc in Harare, with 19 new suspected cases having been recorded early this week.

SIX people died while over 6 000 diarrhoeal cases were recorded countrywide inside one week last month, with health experts blaming local authorities for the outbreak.

A statement released by the Health and Child Care ministry yesterday states that underage children make up almost half of the recorded diarrhoea cases.

“A total of 6 894 common diarrhoea cases and four deaths were reported this week. The deaths were reported from Sally Mugabe Central Hospital (2), Mangwe District (1) and Gwanda District (1),” read the ministry’s weekly disease surveillance report for the week ended January 22, 2023.

Of the reported cases, 3 076 were from under the age of five. The provinces with the highest number of cases are Mashonaland East province (1 223) and Manicaland province (1 138). The cumulative figures are 20 299 cases and six deaths.”

Zimbabwe Nurses Association president Enock Dongo told NewsDay Weekender that diarrhoeal diseases were not surprising during the rainy season, but blamed local authorities for poor service delivery.

“It has always been the case that during the rainy season, people will be very vulnerable to diarrhoeal diseases. We are not really surprised especially looking at the lack of supplies of clean water by the local authorities across the country. People resort to drawing water from wells which are getting contaminated by what is being washed by the rains. People drink that water. Mangoes also lure houseflies, they are contributing to diarrhoea,” Dongo said.

The diarrhoea cases come after typhoid wreaked havoc in Harare, with 19 new suspected cases having been recorded early this week.

A total 63 suspected cases were recently recorded in Glen Norah, while other cases were reported in Glen View and Budiriro, among other high-density suburbs.

    Stingy Hubby Hauled To Court

By A Correspondent- A Harare woman took her ex-husband to the Harare Civil Court claiming US$200 as child support for their minor child.

Brenda Gwande told the court that her ex-husband, Bernard Mudimu, is stingy when it comes to supporting his youngest child.

“He spends US$20 on fuel every three days, but is stingy when it comes to his child. He is not cooperating even when it comes to the child’s birth certificate.

Anyway, if he doesn’t man up to his responsibilities, l can do it on my own.

He doesn’t stay with any children, his other children from another wife actually call me asking for money saying their father has abandoned them,” she said.

Bernard said he had custody of two other children whose mother passed away.

l barely earn enough, but l want the best for my child and when l get a stable job, l will apply for an upward variation on my own. When l call her for us to get a birth certificate for the child, she ignores my calls,” he said.

Magistrate Sharon Mashavire ordered Bernard to pay $35 000 and to buy clothes twice a year.

Zimsec Nullifies Results of 5000 “O” Level Cheaters

By- Zimsec has announced that they have nullified O-level results for 4 961 candidates who cheated in the 2022 exams.

Pass rates, those with at least five subjects at grade C or better, rose to 28,96 percent although pass rates for boys actually fell, 11,54 percent more candidates wrote the examinations, but Zimsec was determined that cheating could not prosper.
Zimsec chairman Professor Eddie Mwenje announced both the availability of the results, and the nullification of the results of those who cheated, at a Press conference in Harare yesterday.
The cheats amounted to around 1,78 percent of the 278 760 who wrote O-level.
At the end of last year, there were reports that the O-level Mathematics papers 1 and 2, and English Paper 2 might have been leaked, and speculation that some might have seen more. Zimsec has a number of ways of tracking down those who cheated by seeing a paper before the exam.
Prof Mwenje said some were identified during the writing of the examinations but the same prior access was picked up at later stages, the marking of scripts and grade reviews.
“The results of such candidates were nullified for the subjects in question in accordance with the Zimsec Act, Section 34. Candidates, headmasters and members of the public who were caught posting question papers on WhatsApp and those buying them were arrested and appeared in court,” said Prof Mwenje.
He said all other practices that contravened the Zimsec Act were brought to the attention of Zimsec by schools.
“As a result of the combined investigations, reports from school and the identification of culprits at marking and grade review stages, a total of 4 961 candidates had results nullified. This number is out of 278 760 who registered for the Ordinary Level examination. The number represents 1,78 percent of the total candidate entry,” he said.
Zimsec said it reserves the right to withhold results even after the publication date and results which have been issued can be withdrawn upon evidence of malpractice by candidates. More so, any centres which were complicit in the examination malpractice will be de-registered.
The numbers of those punished, said Prof Mwenje, is worrisome but they were careful not to punish the innocent.
“1,78 percent is of course a reason to worry but it’s a figure we say that we have to make sure that we don’t punish other people,” he said.
Legal amendments will allow harsher punishment for cheats.
“In fact, we were lenient because we nullified the very subject that we were concerned about. The system that comes into place through the amendment Act will probably nullify every system that you have results in because we wouldn’t know if you didn’t have access to this. It’s quite a lenient approach but that’s telling you that we are not going to tolerate malpractices in our examination system.” he said.
There was an 11,54 percent jump in the number of candidates to 278 760 in November 2022 last year compared to the 249 914 candidates in 2021.
In 2022, a total of 183 584 wrote five or more subjects and 53 169 passed five or more subjects with a grade C or better giving an overall pass rate of 28,96 percent as compared to 163 179 candidates who wrote five or more subjects in 2021, with 42 985 passing five or more subjects with a Grade C or better yielding a pass rate of 26,34 percent.
The total number of male candidates who sat for 2022 Ordinary Level Examinations was 132 653 and of these 86 018 wrote five or more subjects and 21 645 passed five or more subjects translating to a pass rate of 25.16 percent. The total number of male candidates who sat for the 2021 Ordinary level examinations was 118 918 and of these 77 133 wrote five or more subjects and 20 971 passed five or more subjects translating to a pass rate of 27.19 percent. The pass rate for male candidates in 2022 decreased by 2.03%.
The results started to be accessed online by candidates or authorised personnel from yesterday. The results portal will be open for a window of five days. Candidates can access the results portal on the Zimsec website at www.zimsec.co.zw by clicking on their province for redirection to the results portals. Candidates can collect their result slips from their centres or schools from Monday.

Former Cabinet Minister Divorces Wife Over Infidelity

Former Health deputy minister Edwin Muguti’s marriage has been dissolved by the High Court after his wife, Tapiwa Mercy Mukandi filed for divorce accusing him of infidelity.

Mukandi filed to divorce Muguti in 2019 after claims that he was involved in an extra marital affair.

The High Court heard that the marriage had irretrievably broken down to an extent that the couple was no longer enjoying conjugal rights.

Justice Amy Tsanga granted the relief sought by Mukandi.  She also awarded her custody of the couple’s minor child.

“Whereupon after reading documents filed of record, examining the plaintiff and hearing counsel, who applies for a decree of divorce and other relief on the grounds of irretrievable breakdown under the provisions of Section 5 of the Matrimonial Causes Act (Chapter 5:13), it is ordered that: a decree of divorce be and is hereby granted. Maintenance for a minor child (name supplied) shall be regulated by the order of the Maintenance Court granted on the 16″ of July 2019 under Case Number M2673/19.

“Custody of a minor child shall be with the plaintiff and the defendant being afforded reasonable access rights to the child during alternate weekends, public holidays and two weeks during school holidays at his own expense,” ruled the judge.

In her divorce papers, Mukandi said the couple’s marriage had irretrievably broken down and there were no chances of reconciliation.

Muguti was, however, opposed to the divorce.

Mukandi demanded to be awarded 100% shares of the couple’s Vainona property in Harare and another stand in Manresa, measuring 4 000 square meters, among other properties.

Muguti opposed the demands, saying what his wife wanted in shares was not due to her.

He admitted that their marriage has irretrievably broken down but blamed his wife for denying him conjugal rights.

The former minister also said he felt unsafe in his matrimonial home resulting in him moving out.

Muguti said he acquired the Vainona stand on his own using proceeds from his previous divorce settlement.

He also said there was no dwelling house as such, but only a temporary prefabricated structure.

Muguti also said he acquired the property independent of Mukandi for the benefit of his second wife and children from his second marriage.

He said the same stand was auctioned to offset a debt.

ZBC Employees Beg Govt For USD Salaries

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) employees have appealed to government to pay half of their salaries in United States dollars to cushion them against the country’s runaway inflation.

ZBC workers committee chairperson Maushe Mutetepi yesterday told Parliament that 50 members of staff quit last year due to low salaries, adding that the brain drain was likely to escalate.

Mutetepi told the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Information, Media and Broadcasting Services that the State broadcaster had now become a training ground for other media houses due to the measly salaries paid by ZBC.

“Staff retention and understaffing are a serious issue. Last year, 50 employees left ZBC. From our engineering department, eight left. Some are on exit as we speak and the major reason is remuneration. They are just using their leave days,” Mutetepi said.

“When you look at what others are getting elsewhere and across the border, you will see that mine is just a title with empty pockets. It’s a title to say he is an engineer at ZBC, but what do you have to show for that? With the proliferation of broadcasting houses, ZBC is just being used as training ground.”

He said while workers got salary increments recently, these were calculated using the November interbank rate and were gobbled up by inflation and price increases.

“We are kindly asking Parliament to help us get a US dollar component on our salaries because most bills such as rentals and transport are now pegged in US$.”

He told legislators that the minimum wage at ZBC was $188 000.

The ZBC workers also said they wanted to be allocated land to carry out various farming projects to sustain their families.

“The majority of ZBC employees don’t have houses and the biggest part of welfare is accommodation.”

Information committee chairperson Sipho Mokone said when ZBC management appeared before Parliament, they should have raised issues pertaining to workers’ welfare.

Parliament Under Pressure Over Diaspora Vote

Zimbabweans living abroad have pressed Parliament to amend the Electoral Act to allow the diaspora community to vote and participate in preceding election activities.

This comes on the back of the just ended virtual hearings held by Parliament’s committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary affairs, Monday and Tuesday to gather views on the amendment of Electoral Act.

Zimbabwe Diaspora Vote, wrote to Parliament in their submissions calling for amendment of the Electoral Act to allow them to register to vote using address of one’s property, a relative and place where one was born in Zimbabwe.

In their submission the organisation proposed for Zimbabwean embassies dotted around the globe to be used in electoral processes for the benefit of citizens abroad.

“We suggest amendment of Section 17A of the Electoral Act to enable the Commission to register interested Zimbabwean citizens in the diaspora to vote at the Zimbabwe embassies.

“Amend Subsection 33(2)(b) of the Electoral Act to allow Zimbabweans living in the diaspora to register to vote in the constituencies they were registered before leaving the country unless if they have a new address in Zimbabwe,” read the submission in part.

The diaspora vote has been a bone of contention with President Emmerson Mnangagwa shooting down any prospect for them to participate in the plebiscite.

Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has also called for the diaspora vote to be considered which they believe will provide a boost for their aspirations to unseat Zanu PF.

Majority of Zimbabweans moved in droves across borders to seek greener pastures following years of economic turmoil.

“Amend 37c of the Electoral Act to ensure that election results are communicated to the National Command Centre immediately following verification of the results by representatives of the contestants in the election. Ensure that the Electoral Act allows agents of parties contesting in an election in the diaspora are allowed in the polling stations to witness the voting process.

War Breaks Out Between Chicken Slice And Chicken Inn

Chicken Slice founder and chief executive officer Tawanda Mutyebere has accused his competitors the Simbisa Brands-owned Chicken Inn of bullying and of trying to stop his business empire from using red and yellow colours on its products.
He said Chicken Inn also wants Chicken Slice to stop using the word “Luv” in their payoff line.

This follows a three-year legal battle between the two fast-food companies, in which Chicken Inn, a subsidiary of Simbisa Brands, filed an application at the High Court in 2019 seeking an interdict against Chicken Slice using what it termed its trademarks.

Chicken Inn argued that the latter had used “Luv” in its burger and grill logo.

The company also argued it had always used “Luv Dat Chicken” since 1987 before Chicken Slice started using “I Luv it” on its burger boxes.

High Court judge Justice Sylvia Chirawu-Mugomba last month dismissed the application by Chicken Inn.

“There was no case. The idea here is about bullying,” Mutyebere told NewsDay yesterday.

“Where on earth would one be not allowed to use the word luv? Love is not a coined word, it’s generic — whether you use the word love or luv. The word Luv is actually in the Oxford dictionary and, therefore, you cannot say this is my word that I am using.”

He described the attempts by Chicken Inn to stop his company from using the red and yellow colours as “ridiculous”.

“Where on earth can one say red or yellow is my colour? That’s ridiculous. You cannot register a colour. In Zimbabwe, if they do not want to use the colour red, it then means everyone using the colour red must stop using the colour right from the national flag of Zimbabwe,” he charged.

Mutyebere said Chicken Inn had wasted his company’s resources fighting “unnecessary” legal battles.

He described this as “tricks of a bully”.

“They are just there to try and frustrate us, but we will never be frustrated with such kind of poor attacks. You cannot feed Zimbabwe by yourself.”

Contacted for comment, Simbisa Brands managing director Warren Meares said they do not consider Chicken Slice as competitors.

“We have got no qualms or animosity with Mr Mutyebere in any way. If anything, concerning Mr Mutyebere — and you are someone on the street, wherever we go, he follows. We went to Braeside, he followed, we went to Walk Tall West End, he followed, Kadoma he followed, we went to Gweru and he followed, and we were in Bulawayo he followed,” Meares said.”

“When I see him, I stop and have a chat. I don’t have any qualms with him. If anything, I love the fact that he can become successful, and competition is good. I see KFC (American global chicken fast-food store, with outlets in Zimbabwe) more as competition than Chicken Slice. KFC is an international brand. It is a big name, it is a strong name, which is real competition. Chicken Slice is our little brother who is copying us.”—Newsday

    Military Jet Crashes

Two Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) pilots were killed on Friday when their plane, an SF260 military trainer and aerobatics aircraft, crashed in the Mlezu College general area near Gweru.
The aircraft was on a routine training sortie when it hit a power line and crashed.

The names of the deceased will be released after their next of kin have been notified.

In his condolence message, AFZ Commander, Air Marshal Elson Moyo said a dark cloud has engulfed the AFZ following the unfortunate training accident.

“We have learnt, with heavy hearts, of the passing on of two of our pilots after a training accident. Right now, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased pilots,” he said.

“I want to extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased for this sad loss of AFZ pilots who were on duty and playing their part to ensure that the AFZ fulfills its mandate to defend Zimbabwe’s airspace and territorial integrity.”

In 2020, an AFZ instructor and a female student pilot died when a training plane they were flying developed a technical fault and crashed at Dabuka in Somabula on the outskirts of Gweru.

The two were on routine training at Josiah Tungamirai Air Force Base when the accident occurred.-state media

    Book Rapining Shoots Up

A Long winding queue snakes to the pavement from a photocopying shop in the Bulawayo city centre and each customer patiently waits his or her turn to be served through a window.

Behind the window is a middle-aged man who single-handedly takes the orders, receives payments and gives the customers the books they have paid for.

From the look of things, the man is running a profitable business judging by the number of customers waiting to be served but unfortunately the operation is illegal.

The man is photocopying books, mostly school text books to walk-in customers and his books are also sold on the streets of Bulawayo. In some cases the vendors sell the books in front of bookshops.

The man declined to be interviewed and demanded that the pictures taken by the Saturday Chronicle photographer Nkosizile Ndlovu be deleted.

He threatened to report the news crew to the police for taking his pictures and that of his customers despite the fact that his operation is illegal.

The reproduction of texts books or any reading material without the consent of the authors or publishers is illegal under the country’s laws but book piracy is a thriving industry in Zimbabwe. Book piracy involves the replication of copyrighted literature through scanning, photocopying, printing and electronic duplication of books, which is now common in major cities.

The illegal reproduction and photocopying of books, which are then sold on the streets, has given livelihoods to many but is leaving authors and publishers wallowing in poverty. Publishers are feeling the pinch as book piracy continues to threaten the industry.

“Book piracy is killing our industry. Publishing is a business that requires a lot of capital as we have to buy expensive machinery most of which is imported, pay workers’ salaries, rentals and many other related expenses of running a business,” said one of the publishers.

He said there is an urgent need for stakeholders and the police to come up with measures to stop the book piracy to save the industry.

“The country is losing a lot of revenue and there are fears it could become the biggest importer of books if many publishers are forced to close shop,” said the publisher.

One parent, Constance Mlilo, said she has no choice but to buy illegally reproduced books which are cheaper compared to the prices in bookshops.

“The books are cheaper and readily available. Sometimes as parents we look for our children’s textbooks for days on end at these established bookshops to no avail and we end up buying these photocopied books,” said Mlilo.

A school teacher who declined to be named, said schools are the biggest culprits that are fueling the illegal reproduction of books.

“Most schools, colleges and universities have since acquired heavy duty photocopying machines to reproduce books.

Teachers cannot stop learners from bringing illegally reproduced textbooks into class,” he said.

A tour of Bulawayo’s city centre streets showed that book piracy is a thriving business. The books on the streets are selling for a song compared to the bookshop prices hence many parents are buying from the streets.

Zimbabwe Book Sellers Association chairman Paul Masuku said book piracy is getting out of hand.

“You will find that, for instance, a bookshop is selling a Grade Three Mathematics textbook for US$9 but that same book will be on the streets selling for as low as US$3. Book piracy is killing the livelihoods of book shop owners and publishers,” he said.

Mr Masuku said what is disturbing is that even school authorities are encouraging parents to buy the low quality text books from the streets.

“We are aware of teachers who are advising parents to buy books from photocopying shops saying they are cheaper,” he said. -state media

    Andre Ayew Joins Nottingham Forest

Andre Ayew has completed his switch to the English Premier League after joining Nottingham Forest on a free transfer.

The Ghanaian striker, who played for Swansea and West Ham in England’s top-flight, signed a deal until the end of the season.

Forest were able to sign the player outside the transfer window because he’s a free agent.

The 33-year-old Black Stars captain was without a club following his exit from Qatari outfit Al Sadd.

“It’s a great feeling to sign for Nottingham Forest,” Ayew said on the club’s official website.

“I know how big the club is and I know how much the club means to the city and the fanbase.

“It’s always been difficult whenever I’ve played against Forest and at The City Ground and I love the stadium.

“Steve Cooper is someone who knows me very well and knows how to work with me both on and off the pitch.

“We have a strong relationship, he’s a special coach and a special human being and someone who I really look up to.

“I know what I can bring to the team, I’m ready to give my all and make sure that we are able to stay in the Premier League.”

    Messi Speaks On Future

Lionel Messi has suggested that he wants to continue playing football until the next FIFA World Cup but openly admitted the age might make it difficult for him.

The Argentina captain will be turning 39-year-old at the 2026 edition that will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

“Because of age it’ll be difficult to make 2026,” Messi told Argentine publication Diario Olé. “I love playing football and while I feel like I’m in good shape and enjoying this, I’m going to keep at it. It seems like a long time until the next World Cup, but it depends on how my career is going.”

Messi holds the Argentine records for caps (172) as well as goals (98). He finally got his hands on the World Cup after his side beat France in the final.

The superstar also won another major trophy on the international stage with victory over Brazil in last year’s Copa America final.

And Argentine manager Lionel Scaloni holds optimism on Messi’s future.

“I think Messi can make it to the next World Cup,” Scaloni told Spanish radio Calvia FM last month, as cited by ESPN. “It will depend a lot on what he wants and what happens over time, that he feels good. The doors will always be open. He is happy on the pitch, and for us [it] would be good.”- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Chamisa Masvingo Aide Survives Horror Crash

By- Former MDC-T Gutu central MP, and leader of the CCC in Masvingo, Oliver Chirume, has survived a fatal road accident.

The accident happened on Saturday and claimed his brother-in-law, who died on the spot.

It occurred some 25km from Masvingo near Mutimurefu just outside Mutimurefu Prison along Masvingo–Mutare Highway when the Toyota Grand Hiace burst its rear tyre and overturned three times, landing on its side off the road. The family was travelling from Masvingo to Chirume’s rural home in Gutu with the car packed with groceries for the former MP’s shop.
Five people were in the car, and Chirume’s brother-in-law, George Murombo (39), a truck driver in South Africa who was driving Chirume’s car is the one who died on the spot. Chirume’s wife Shylet Chirume nee Murombo is in a critical condition and was yesterday transferred from Makurira Clinic to St Anne’s Hospital in Harare.
Chirume’s condition is stable and he has since been released from hospital. He gave details of the accident in an interview with The Mirror
Two other passengers, Brandon, Chirume’s son and pupil at Hellen McGhie broke his right hand while Chantelle, the deceased’s daughter suffered injuries to the head and were both treated and discharged. Scarlett had just got a place at Hellen McGhie.
Chirume said all the passengers were thrown out of the car but however, in the case of Murombo, the vehicle landed on top of him thereby causing his death.
“After the accident I saw my wife lying face looking down in the middle of the road, my child was dangling from the window of the car while Scarlett was standing on the road but I could not see my brother-in-law. Zanu PF Mazowe MP Under Probe For Rape Charges

By A Correspondent| Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Mazowe Central Cde Sydney Chidamba has come under investigations for rape charges following his affair with an under-age school going kid and subsequently impregnating her.

The story follows the rise of unreported cases of girl child abuse in the country by politicians at a time when First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa is calling for a zero tolerance against rape and child abuse through her Angel of Hope Foundation.

Unfortunately, at the alleged time of the rape, the girl was a learner at Kakora Secondary School which is the rural home for the First Lady a situation which has irked women to let the cat out of the bag and seek prosecution of the legislator who committed the crime and enjoyed the protection of the then ruling political goons.

Allegations are that sometime in 2016, Chidamba was in an affair with the school kid (name supplied) and he went on to impregnate her despite that she had not yet attained the legal age of majority.

In attempt to cover up the crime, Chidamba reportedly went on to liaise with the family of the girl and quickly settled lobola charges in a bid to hoodwink members of the public who were aware of the matter.

A source close to the issue who however declined to be named for fear of victimization said Chidamba took the girl to be his wife, “it is a public secret that is well known by all and everywhere here in Chiweshe, Kakora.

“By then the girl was less than 16 years and attending school at Kakora , she went on to give birth to a baby and was concealed somewhere near Ceaser Mine where the MP is currently renting her a full house close to Barwick school,” revealed the source.

Women’s group have raised alarm against tainted personalities seeking office saying there is need to purge the dirty from parliament, “the reason we are bringing this dirty linen before the public is an attempt to make sure that perpetrators of rape and child abuse should not celebrate getting away with it.

“As a country we are of the thinking that we should address these issues starting by the law makers themselves, I know some might feel that it’s a political stance but then this is the right time to expose such evils,” said a wing of women’s activists who also declined to be named for fear of political victimization.

Mazowe district in Mashonaland Central province has remained with high prevalent rates of HIV/ AIDS/ Rape and Gender Based Violence owing mainly to the high presence of artisanal miners and previously crooked corrupt political systems.

Efforts to get a comment from Chidamba nor the family of the victim were futile during the time of publishing, however this publication is reliably informed that Chidamba has previously made several attempts to kill the story from various presses.

“Our call is for the police to institute investigations and for members of the media to play the investigative role in having the truth come out, otherwise it is such things that will fail us to attain Vision 2030 as well as heal the society,” said a Zanu PF official from Mazowe.

Fresh Details On AirForce Plane Crash

By- The two Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) pilots who died this afternoon when their plane, an SF260 military trainer and aerobatics aircraft, crashed in the Mlezu College general area near Gweru were on a routine training session.

The aircraft crashed after hitting a power line.

The police are still withholding the deceased’s names until they’re next of kin has been notified.

In his condolence message, AFZ Commander Air Marshal Elson Moyo said a dark cloud had engulfed the AFZ following the unfortunate training accident.
In 2020, an AFZ instructor and a female student pilot died when a flying training plane developed a technical fault and crashed at Dabuka in Somabula on the outskirts of Gweru.
The two were on routine training at Josiah Tungamirai Air Force Base when the accident occurred.

Bulawayo Man Practices Mubobobo At Banking Quee

By- A Bulawayo man was arrested for practising Mubobo at a woman standing in a bank queue.

Tedious Muchavheruka (38) of Makokoba was arrested after a woman who was queuing at a bank in the city centre nearly jumped out of her skin when she felt something hard and slimy sliding up and down her back.
While the woman was queuing for cash, she felt something strange rubbing against her bums and she cringed.
Upon checking, she saw Muchavheruka standing behind her making sexual movements on her.
Seeing that he had been caught in action, he tried to shove his trouser-snake back into its natural habitat, but it was too late.
“The woman charged at him and he fled. There was a collective gasp from people in the queue and they stood in shock as improbable scene unfolded,” said another bystander.
The bystander added: “The woman reported the incident to the police.
He was also ordered to report at Mzilikazi Police Station on Mondays between 6AM and 6PM. B Metro

Top Fast Food Outlets In War Of Words Over Trademarks

By-Chicken Slice and Chicken are embroiled in a bitter war of words over advertising trademarks.

Founder and chief executive officer of the former, Tawanda Mutyebere, has accused his competitor Chicken Inn of bullying.

This comes after Chicken Inn filed an application at the High Court in 2019 seeking an interdict against Chicken Slice using what it termed its trademarks.

Chicken Inn sought to have Chicken Slice barred from using red and yellow colours on its products and also to stop using the word “Luv” in their payoff line.

The company argued that Chicken Slice had used “Luv” in its burger and grill logo, saying it had always used “Luv Dat Chicken” since 1987 before Chicken Slice started using “I Luv it” on its burger boxes.

However, High Court judge Justice Sylvia Chirawu-Mugomba last month dismissed the application by Chicken Inn.

Speaking to NewsDay on Thursday, Mutyebere said Chicken Inn did not invent the word “luv”. He said:

There was no case. The idea here is about bullying. Where on earth would one not be allowed to use the word luv?

Love is not a coined word, it’s generic — whether you use the word love or luv.

The word Luv is actually in the Oxford dictionary and, therefore, you cannot say this is my word that I am using.

Where on earth can one say red or yellow is my colour? That’s ridiculous. You cannot register a colour.

In Zimbabwe, if they do not want to use the colour red, it then means everyone using the colour red must stop using the colour right from the national flag of Zimbabwe.

They are just there to try and frustrate us, but we will never be frustrated with such kind of poor attacks.

You cannot feed Zimbabwe by yourself.

Mutyebere described the court application by Chicken Inn as “tricks of a bully”. NewsDay

Messi Keen To Play At Next World Cup

    Andre Ayew Returns To PSL

The transfer follows after the striker was heavily tipped to join Everton but turned down the offer to join Forest.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

    Malaria Prevention And Treatment

    Zaka Man Sues Prosecutor General

ZAKA – A Zaka motorist, who allegedly caused a fatal road traffic accident which claimed three lives in 2019, has sued Prosecutor General (PG) Nelson Mutsonziwa for delaying his trial.

Brian Chiwara, who faces culpable homicide, filed an application with the High Court demanding finalisation of his case.

Court papers show that Chiwara was arrested in 2019 for allegedly causing the accident in which three people were killed on the spot along Roy-Chiredzi Road.

Since then, he has made numerous appearances at Zaka Magistrates’ Court, where trial keeps being postponed.

Following his arrest, Chiwara remained in custody until July 13, 2021 when trial commenced.

Three witnesses were lined up to testify against him but none turned up to give their testimony.

Chiwara was then remanded out of custody to August 12, 2021 before trial was moved to October 7 due to disruptions caused by Covid-19.

Trial was further moved after witnesses failed to show up.

On 26 November 2021, he was removed from remand, only to be summoned again on March 22, 2022 where one witness testified.

On 14 April 2022, the State secured the attendance of another witness but sought a further postponement, with prosecutors saying they needed more time to locate the remaining witness.

This led to Chiwara filing his initial application before the magistrate seeking a verdict.

However, the magistrate dismissed the application, noting that he had only been on remand since March 22.

This also prompted his filing of the current application which was dismissed by High Court judge Owen Tagu who ruled that he should be patient.

“The general rule is that a superior court should intervene in uncompleted proceedings of the lower courts only if exceptional circumstances of proven irregularity vitiate the proceedings and give rise to a miscarriage of justice.

“If the witness had testified and the applicant was of the view that there was no case against him, he could have filed for discharge at the close of the State case.

“If the application was not going to find favour in the court at that stage, there was a possibility of the applicant being acquitted at the close of the State case.

“If not acquitted, but convicted, the applicant had the option of applying for a review or appeal. In the premises, I find that the application lacks merit and I will dismiss it,” ruled the judge.

Soda Zhemu Taken To Task Over Incessant Power Cuts

Energy minister Zhemu Soda was yesterday grilled in Senate over the electricity crisis currently affecting the country, which has resulted in rolling power cuts of up to 22 hours daily.

Senators demanded to know government’s plans to improve power generation.

Soda said his ministry would meet the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) soon to discuss water allocations to improve electricity generation.

“What the government did in order to ameliorate the situation of depressed power supply was to increase imports from the region.  We got an addition of around 250 megawatts, and we are importing a total of 500 megawatts. That is the reason why the situation did not deteriorate even when we had reduced production at Kariba because of the water situation,” Soda said.

“From Kariba, we are generating 250 megawatts, but we are meeting ZRA with the hope that water allocation is going to be increased and improve our generation.”

The country was plunged into an energy crisis after the ZRA last year ordered the Zimbabwe Power Company to suspend operations at the Kariba South Hydro Power Station due to low water levels in the lake.
