By A Correspondent| Former MDC vice President Elias Mudzuri has accused Douglas Mwonzora of accomplishing his mission to destroy the party left behind by late founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Posting on Twitter, Mudzuri said Mwonzora should be stopped before he disposes party property.
“Mwonzora has accomplished his mission to destroy MDC. Let’s not allow him to dispose of the party properties. We must stand up to him and stop his shenanigans,” said Mudzuri.
He urged MDC members to work hard and rebuild the party in preparation for 2028 elections.
“MDC cadres must now unite to vigorously pursue the restoration agenda so that we win 2028 elections. Restoration begins by rebuilding structures from branch up to the national leaders chosen by a genuine Congress,” added Mudzuri.
“All MDC members who were expelled or victimised in any way must immediately return to their party, show Mwonzora the middle finger and hound him out of Harvest House,” further said Mudzuri.

“Chidembo kana choda kuramba mukadzi, chinoshereketa!” (When the skunk wants to divorce its wife, it will try anything and everything!) so goes the adage.
When Douglas Mwonzora realised that the fickle and shilly-shally MDC wildebeest herd had deserted him to go with Nelson Chamisa, following High Court ruling that the later’s 2018 seizure of power was unconstitutional; he knew his political career was over. Finished!
During the by-elections earlier on this year (he tried to have these cancelled but failed) he could not even attract more than a handful to his rallies. From there on, Mwonzora’s political mission was how to wiggle out of an election just as the skunk mission was how to divorce its wife.
The classic fable tell of how the skunk complain day and night about the many things his wife did to anyone who cared to listen. Indeed, even when there was no one in sight to hear him, he would continue mumbling. Even the fleas on his back would deep in the fur just to escape the incessant whingeing.
“Zhe chaz chairz growing in cher earz!” complained the skunk, when the village council agreed to hear his divorce case.
“What chairz are you wittering about?” asked the village head.
“He means, she has hairs growing in her ears.”
“It iz pozzively revolting!” cut in the skunk!
“Case dismissed!” ruled the village head.
The skunk was whingeing on how to divorce his wife, Mwonzora has been whingeing on how he to wriggle out of these elections and thus avoid a total electoral whitewash.
“We are not going to be part of this baptism, this blessing of this sham. This election is a farce,” declared Mwonzora as he announced his withdrawal from the 2023 Presidential rat race.
One of the reasons he gave for withdrawing is that ZEC had blocked 87 of his potential parliamentary candidates paying their nomination fees and yet allowed CCC candidates to do so.
Rubbish Mwonzora and his MDC and including his former colleagues now in CCC have all participated in 2013 and 2018 elections knowing fully well that they are flawed and illegal.
In the 2013 elections, SADC leaders literally begged Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC colleagues; of which Mwonzora, Chamisa, Tendai Biti, David Coltart and many others were senior leaders; not to participate without first implementing the democratic reforms to ensure the elections were free, fair and credible. MDC leaders ignored the advice and Coltart explained why.
“The (2013) electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account,” confessed David Coltart in his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe.
“But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility,”
In short, the opposition have participated in these flawed and illegal elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy out of greed. Mwonzora has lost the support of the MDC wildebeest herd and with it the chance of winning an gravy train seats. And suddenly he remembers that the process is “so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw”. How convenient!
The only take home from Mwonzora’s resignation speech is the admission that the 3 million Euros fund blocked by Zanu PF recently was meant to training and finance the deployment polling station election agents. All the three political parties with MPs in the outgoing parliament i.e. Zanu PF, MDC and CCC were going to benefit.
“In 2018 MDC A failed to field election agents at some 2 000 or so polling stations!” Mwonzora revealed.
At the time Chamisa claimed that MDC A, of which he was the presidential candidate, had ALL the V11 forms, summary of the vote count, from each and every one of the over 11 000 polling stations. However the affidavit he submitted to Constitutional Court, challenging of the 2018 presidential elections results, showed that he did not have ALL the V11 forms to account for all the 2.6 million votes he claimed to have garnered in that election.
He stoically refused to say how many V11 forms were missing and why.
It was only not a few weeks ago that Chamisa finally revealed that MDC A had failed to field election gents at 544 polling stations. This is a far cry from the “2 000 or so” Mwonzora is telling us!
Chamisa must come clean on just how many polling stations did NOT have MDC A election agents in the 2018 elections. And, more significantly, with just 14 days to go to these 2023 elections, he reveal whether CCC has election agents at ALL the over 12 000 polling stations to be used in these elections.
It is an outage for CCC to keep wittering about “guarding the vote” only for the nation to then learn the party did not even have the election agent to stop Zanu PF tampering with the V11 forms!
So why is CCC claiming the party has strategies to win rigged elections when it cannot do something as basic as having an election agent at each polling station.
The people of Zimbabwe have risked all; livelihoods, property, life and limb from the vengeful wrath of Zanu PF; to elect MDC leaders into power on the understanding they would implement the democratic changes to stop Zanu PF rigging elections. After 23 years, 5 of which in the GNU, MDC now rebranded CCC, have failed to implement even one token reform. Not one!
Fortunately for the MDC/CCC leaders, the party’s supporters, the wildebeest herd, have no clue what the reforms are much less how they were to be implemented. Even now with the benefit of hindsight of the GNU events, they still have no clue. And so the MDC/CCC have gotten away with the blatant betrayal of first failing to implement reforms and then participating in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy.
As far as the MDC wildebeest herd is concerned Mwonzora is to blame for all the opposition parties’ failures and blunders. Mwonzora is a “Zanu PF project!” many of them will say. Mwonzora has become the fall guy.
Still, should the nation know, the truth will always come out sooner or later, that Chamisa and company dragged the nation into yet another flawed elections so flawed there was no verified voters’ roll, 3 million in the diaspora were denied the vote, rural voters were frogmarched to vote for Zanu PF, etc., etc. And above all, Chamisa and company once again lied that they were “guarding the vote” when did not have the requisite election agent at many of the polling stations! Chamisa et al will find that even the naive and gullible MDC wildebeest herd will not be so forgiving this time.
My prediction is that Zanu PF is blatantly rigging these 2023 elections, Chamisa and company know this and are participating to give Zanu PF legitimacy for a few gravy train seats reward. Many Zimbabweans will finally wake up to this political reality. Chamisa and many of his CCC leaders will know their political careers are over and either quietly walk into the political sun set or, like Mwonzora, they will be whingeing for an excuse to do so!
OPPOSITION Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa says he will free all political prisoners and the Judiciary from State capture, as part of his key deliverables in 100 days once elected into office.
He says he will also reform the police, army and Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO).
The CCC leader will tussle it out with Zanu-PF candidate, President Emmerson Mnangagwa and eight other candidates for the top post in Zimbabwe.
Chamisa announced his ambitious plan on Tuesday in Bulawayo when he was unveiling his election manifesto titled A New Great Zimbabwe for Everyone.
The 100-page blueprint is anchored on five pillars, which include restoration, reconstruction, modernisation, transformation and reconciliation.
Chamisa said Zimbabwe suffered from a crisis of governance, characterised by the weaponisation of the law against critics, breakdown of the rule of law, judicial capture and politicisation of State security institutions.
“The Zimbabwean crisis is essentially a crisis of governance. It is a crisis of leadership. The last 43 years have seen the dangers, failures and weaknesses of parasitic politics reflected in stale and dysfunctional institutions,” Chamisa said as he promised to free political prisoners.
“The current Zimbabwe is evidence of the horridness of corrosive politics, extractive institutions, fear, collapse of the rule of law, corruption, patronage and prebendalism (selfish, greed and reward of cronies).”
CCC member Job Sikhala has been in remand prison since June last year on charges of inciting public violence at the funeral of slain party activist, Moreblessing Ali.
Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume is serving a four-year jail term on a charge of inciting public violence in July 2020. Several other CCC members and human rights defenders also face various charges amid concerns over the muzzling of dissent through harsh legislation.
Chamisa said Zimbabwe would not progress with a captured Judiciary.
“The citizens’ government undertakes to ensure the independence of the Judiciary and other institutions in line with the Constitution and Sustainable Development Goal 16,” he said.
“This will be done through the following: Ensuring the full independence of the Judiciary; making adequate budgetary allocations to the Judiciary; ensuring that all judicial appointments are based on merit and competency, as well as public testimonials in line with public interviews conducted by the Judicial Service Commission.”
The Judiciary has in the past said it is independent and does not take instructions from the Executive.
According to Chamisa, the country’s security services are compromised and need urgent reform.
“The citizens’ government will transform and maintain a formidable citizens security and safety framework through the Zimbabwe National Army, Air Force of Zimbabwe, Central Intelligence Organisation and Police Service,” he said.
“We shall build an army that supports the establishment of democratic institutions in Zimbabwe, where citizens live in happiness, peace and safety as they freely participate in the progressive governance of Zimbabwe.”
He also said his government would clip the powers of the dreaded spy agency, CIO, by ensuring that it is governed by an Act of Parliament defining and limiting its powers. “Re-orientation of the services shall be part of the transformation agenda. Expanding the scope of the intelligence services to assist in economic and financial crimes including money laundering and illicit deals.”
Chamisa also said his government would remove the local currency that President Emmerson Mnangagwa reintroduced in 2019 after a decade of dollarisation.
I have been receiving pressure to endorse @nelsonchamisa for presidency in the forthcoming elections. Sadly, my conscience will never allow me to do that. Beyond me and my erstwhile Cde. brother being cooking oil and water in terms of politics, his religious fanaticism is a cause of concern for a person who wants to hold the highest office of the land.
I could never in my life time endorse a person who is a 3 in 1 of manipulation professions ie lawyer, pastor and politician. If one failed to build an institution at party level what guarantee is there that he will be able to manage an already existing government institution?
If one failed to ensure constitutionalism within the MDCT and has failed to furnish the world with his current party constitution, what guarantee do we have that he will be able to ensure constitutionalism. He even has a plan to change the people’s constitution to God knows what.
Change/shanduko can never be an ideology. I am one woman who firmly believes in ideology. Having ideological clarity has made me understand our political environment and what needs to be done to save Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe needs;
In conclusion, all these attrubutes do not exist in Chamisa. I will not vote for a populist with no direction. These are my thoughts and I am entitled to them.
The Nelson Chamisa-led Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party has just released its extensive election manifesto outlining its vision for transforming Zimbabwe if elected into power.
The 100-page manifesto covers a broad range of issues from economic reforms social services to governance.
It offers valuable insights into CCC’s priorities and policy positions.
The manifesto places heavy emphasis on reviving Zimbabwe’s economy and charting a pathway to a US$100 billion economy within a decade.
However, it is interesting to note that less than 10 African countries currently have US$100 billion economies.
It rightly identifies the economy as the country’s Achilles heel after years of mismanagement.
However, the mechanisms proposed for generating such robust growth rates consistently seem overly optimistic.
While agriculture, mining and infrastructural investment have the potential, the sheer scale and speed of the projected transformation appears unrealistic considering Zimbabwe’s current woes.
A more gradual, incremental approach may be prudent. Infrastructure rehabilitation forms a key pillar of CCC’s economic plans.
The party pledges major investments in rebuilding dilapidated roads, rail, power stations, airports and dams.
This is long overdue given Zimbabwe’s huge infrastructure deficit.
However, funding such an expansive national rebuilding programme hinges on the party’s ability to secure substantial international support and investment post-election.
The debt resolution strategy outlined will be critical.
On governance, CCC promises extensive reforms, including a new Constitution, reduced Cabinet, strengthened Parliament, decentralisation and anti-corruption laws.
While a reduced Cabinet will be a step in the right direction, it might be a difficult ask for a movement that previously had a bloated presidium.
While vital, implementing such sweeping changes even with political will takes time.
CCC may need to sequence reforms, starting with more achievable steps like trimming Cabinet and tasking Parliament with oversight before tackling bigger structural changes.
CCC’s social policy commitments around healthcare, education, housing and social security are morally compelling, but also expensive.
The manifesto does not outline in adequate detail how these will be funded sustainably.
Zimbabwe’s dire economic situation means finances are extremely constrained.
A more incremental expansion aligned with realistic revenue forecasts would be prudent.
One other notable aspect of the manifesto is its heavy emphasis on restoring Zimbabwe to a Christian, God-fearing nation.
While freedom of religion is vital, the centring of Christianity raises concerns about pluralism and diversity.
The manifesto states that: “We will restore Zimbabwe to God in honour, values, faith, worship and praise,” and promises to “rededicate Zimbabwe to God”.
Despite being a Christian, I find the constant reference to Biblical scriptures in the manifesto alienating other religions.
Such rhetoric seems to privilege Christianity above other beliefs.
There is little mention of protecting minority faiths or recognising Zimbabwe’s religious diversity.
This risks alienating non-Christians and undermining religious tolerance.
A truly democratic vision would be more inclusive of all faiths and avoid language that elevates one religion over others.
The manifesto’s Christian-centric tone could worry secular citizens and religious minorities about their place in CCC’s future Zimbabwe.
While expansive in scope, the dense 100-page manifesto does not seem optimally simplified and condensed for easy digestion by the average voter.
The prose is lengthy, detailed and at times overly technical for a document aimed at a mass electorate.
There is opportunity to present core proposals and commitments in more straightforward, easy-to-grasp language and formatting.
For instance, the economic plan could be distilled into three to five key actionable bullet points.
The decentralisation reforms could be summarised in a simple infographic. Pull quotes, charts and graphics could make the manifesto more visually engaging.
A abbreviated citizen-focused version highlighting major takeaways on what CCC will deliver for voters if elected could resonate more broadly with the masses.
Accessibility and clarity are crucial for manifestos to effectively reach and inspire citizens.
CCC may need to find ways to simplify its vision further to maximise impact among the Zimbabwean voters.
In summary, CCC’s manifesto sets out an ambitious reform agenda and provides a broad direction for Zimbabwe’s future.
However, the sheer scale and speed of the planned transformation seems unrealistic considering current challenges.
Careful prioritisation, sequencing of reforms and consensus-building will be essential if CCC wins power.
While aspirational, CCC must balance its bold vision with pragmatism in execution if the dreams outlined are to become reality.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) is cornered by independent presidential election candidate Saviour Kasukuwere over the printing of ballot papers for the important poll.
After Kasukuwere lost in the High Court, a decision which was later confirmed by the Supreme Court, Zec started printing presidential election ballot papers.
The judgement followed a High Court application by Zanu PF activist Lovedale Mangwana to get Kasukuwere disqualified on grounds that he is no longer a registered voter since he has been out of the country for 18 consecutive months.
The courts agreed, effectively removing him from the voters’ roll, a serious violation of his fundamental right to vote ans be voted for.
However, Kasukuwere has not given up after the Supreme Court loss following his appeal.
He has now gone further to the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) to seek leave to appeal, making the case a constitutional matter. Hearing is set down for Tuesday 9:30am.
This means Zec’s ongoing printing of ballots is illegal.

Saviour Kasukuwere’s application of Direct Access to the Constitutional Court has been dismissed.
*Kasukuwere was challenging a ruling disqualifying him from contesting the August 23 election as an independent presidential candidate.
Mberengwa – Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president and now CCC Parliamentary candidate for Mberengwa Central Constituency, Dr Takavafira Zhou has called for an urgent engagement between the people of Mberengwa and a mining company called Kuvimba to resolve the issue of alleged massive looting of lithium in the area.
He called on the people of Mberengwa to come together, unite and confront Kuvimba Mining House otherwise posterity is going to judge them harshly.
Speaking in an audio that he posted on social media this week, Zhou said the level of looting of the mineral without any benefit to the local communities is alarming.
He described it as irresponsible mining.
He alleged that Indians and Chinese were also looting K grade emeralds from these mines and they did so with the permission of Kuvimba.
Zhou said the quantity of minerals mined is not known, the money that is being fetched is not known and the destination of the minerals is also not known. He said Kuvimba claimed that it had invested US$5 million in the lithium mines but there is no sign of any investment.
He said that hundreds of trucks ply the district daily to ferry stripped lithium to unknown destinations. He said Kuvimba has destroyed roads and dust spews in villages, business centres and schools as the trucks go up and down the district.…
-Police Officers Accused of Arson and Theft to Appear in Court for Bail Ruling.
The three police officers from Harare, Zimbabwe, who stand accused of orchestrating a break-in, theft, and arson at the Harare Central Stores office, are set to appear in court tomorrow for a pivotal bail ruling. Stanley Musekiwa (46), Takaidza Mugwisi (36), and Masimba Stanley Gwasunda (43), all affiliated with the ZRP CID Stores, have been under scrutiny since the alleged incident occurred.
The trio has been charged with theft and malicious damage to property in connection with an incident that took place on June 23. According to the State’s case presented before Harare magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa, the officers allegedly staged a break-in and theft of approximately US$45,000 from the CID Stores office. To cover their tracks, they reportedly set the office ablaze, leading to significant damage to the building and its contents.
Inspector Stanley Musekiwa, who serves as the Officer-in-Charge of CID Stores and Business Harare, along with his subordinates Takaidza Mugwisi and Masimba Stanley Gwasunda, allegedly conspired to hide the stolen cash. The money, amounting to US$40,500, had been recovered from a suspect involved in unlawful entry and theft in Belvedere, Harare. Instead of securing the money as instructed, Musekiwa and Gwasunda reportedly concealed it in a four-plate stove oven drawer within office 26 of CID Stores and Business Harare.
Events took a more sinister turn on August 6, when Mugwisi was deployed for night duty to safeguard CID offices, including the exhibit room. During the same night, around 1 am, the three officers allegedly took advantage of a power outage caused by an electrical fault at Harare Central Police Station. Seizing the opportunity, they are accused of orchestrating a staged break-in by cutting the padlock keys securing the screen gate with a bolt cutter.
While they reportedly possessed keys to enter the room, the accused officers chose to cut the screen gate to deflect suspicion. Subsequently, they allegedly accessed the four-plate stove’s oven drawer and stole the cash stored there. The suspects are also suspected of stealing other undisclosed exhibits from the room.
Following the alleged theft, the officers are accused of setting fire to the room, causing extensive damage to the building and its contents. The exact value of the destroyed exhibits and the extent of structural damage remain to be quantified.
During the bail hearing, the State opposed granting bail to the accused officers, citing concerns about their potential to flee. The court is set to determine whether the officers will be released on bail as they await further legal proceedings. The case has garnered significant attention due to the involvement of law enforcement officers in the alleged criminal activities.

A 38-year-old artisanal miner from Gokwe has appeared in court facing charges of murder after he allegedly killed his one-year-old daughter for ritual purposes.
Thomas Muzenda is alleged to have killed his one-year-old daughter to boost his mining venture.
Muzenda is alleged to have been instructed by a traditional healer only identified as Dhumba to remove his daughter’s heart and hand it over for ritual purposes.
The court heard that Muzenda, who was the sole custodian of the child since his separation with wife, killed the girl with a knife before ripping out her heart and dumping the body in a disused well.
He has been remanded in custody to the 18th of this month and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
The case comes just a month after Tafadzwa Shamba and Tapiwa Makore Senior of Murehwa were sentenced to death after being convicted of the murder of seven-year-old Tapiwa Makore Junior to boost their cabbage business.

– In a shocking turn of events, a 24-year-old man from Borrowdale, Harare, identified as Isaac Nyamazana, was found dead on Monday night near a house in Borrowdale. Nyamazana had been employed as a caretaker at the residence where he tragically ended his life.
Sources reveal that on the evening of August 7, 2023, at approximately 7:00 PM, Nyamazana was confronted by his employers regarding the disappearance of various items from the property. The employers reportedly sought an explanation for the missing goods, an encounter that reportedly took a devastating toll on Nyamazana’s mental state.
Allegedly, unable to cope with the weight of the situation, Nyamazana took drastic and tragic measures. Using an electric cable, he took his own life by hanging himself from a tree near the house where he worked. Shockwaves reverberated through MDC party structures and supporters yesterday as MDC leader Douglas Mwonzora announced his withdrawal from the presidential race just two weeks before the August 23 harmonized election.
Speaking at a hastily assembled press conference, a visibly agitated Mwonzora described the upcoming election as a “sham and a farce” and stated he would not legitimize the process with his participation.
“We are not going to be part of this baptism, this blessing of this sham. This election is a farce,” he declared.
Yet even as Mwonzora railed against the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission [ZEC], deputy chair Rodney Kiwa in today’s Daily News [9th August 2023] dismissed the withdrawal as coming too late .
With less than 21 days until ballots are cast, candidates cannot pull out as per Electoral Act statutes.
Why Mwonzora, a lawyer, would announce his withdrawal knowing the legal requirements has raised eyebrows?
Some MDC members and political analysts described Mwonzora’s presidential candidature withdrawal as a face-saving maneuver after failing to register 87 MDC parliamentary candidates due to unpaid registration fees.
Political analyst Mr Akim Dube said, “Mwonzora withdrew after he realized that he will get zero votes as his candidates did during 2022 by elections. He was going to be heavily defeated in presidential elections. Mwonzora is now very unpopular.”
But while abandoning the presidential race, Mwonzora has allowed 24 aspiring MDC parliamentarians – who financed their own nominations – along with registered aspiring councilors, to remain on ballots. To some, it smacks of hypocrisy and callousness.
Why should Mwonzora withdraw his candidature for the sake of 87 candidates and forcing other 24 candidates to participate in the same election he described as a shame?
“Mwonzora failed to pay our fees but expects us to campaign alone now. What kind of leadership is this?” one MDC aspiring member of parliament said on condition of anonymity.
Another MDC aspiring member of parliament called it a betrayal: “He [Mwonzora] left us vulnerable when we need him most.”
The presidential candidature withdrawal is yet another chaotic turn for the fractured opposition party under Mwonzora’s leadership. Panned by critics as lacking political acumen, his inconsistent maneuvering and inflammatory rhetoric have undermined the MDC’s credibility.
Yesterday’s antics [candidature withdrawal by Mwonzora] proved no different. Mwonzora viciously attacked independent writer Wezhira Munya during question and answer, calling him “deranged” for accurately predicting the withdrawal. Munya had received leaked info from Mwonzora’s own two top 6 inner circle members to the effect that Mwonzora was forced to withdraw his candidature by National Council members due to many allegations.
While Mwonzora struggles to put off fire in the MDC burning house after his candidature withdrawal, the upcoming election remains a ten horse race. Major contenders include CCC President Nelson Chamisa, ZANU-PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa, and an array of minor opposition figures.
But many believe the real fight is between the top two: Youthful President Chamisa and Zanu PF president Mnangangwa. As Mwonzora withdraws in ignominy, the nation watches with bated breath.

These were words of political demagogues amongst them Amiclar Cabral and Roosevelt. Political contestation is not a new discourse in the political field but an extension of a branch and physiology of an elitist arrangement so embroiled in the state of affairs of a given constituency, ward or setting.
Without much digression, the battle of titans in Masvingo Urban is one to be recorded in the Guinness books for future generations and referencing of a war that never was. The political battle of Masvingo Urban Constituency has attracted several debates with pundits and analysts submitting their own views anchored on theoretical assumptions and hypothesis some which are not only skewed but lacks merit to find space in the archives of history. Having been in the trenches of campaigns, overseeing the technical side and mobilisation set up ongoing, I am compelled to add my political voice in an attempt demystify some myths peddled by detractors.
There are three major political actors in the race of Masvingo Urban Constituency CONTESTATION which pits Zanu Pf represented by land baron Mahwende Wellington, Current City Mayor Maboke Collen in the political wilderness of fortunes under the guise of Independent banner and Citizens Coalition for Change represented by the Human Rights award winning Lawyer Martin Mureri. I can not waste my time talking of a once formidable party under the monicker MDCA represented by Mazarire Benjamin, because it’s a pity that his name was submitted to the nomination court to humiliate him and take away the remaining political dignity around him.
After reading the manifestos of the 3 political actors which I think should have been the guiding principles of the 5 year tenure of office, I am compelled to think that it is not populism that shall guide the people of Masvingo Urban to elect their next MP but a lot of things amongst them political inclination and the principle. At one point in time, as a development practitioner, theorists agreed that blue prints have gone into a full cycle and what is happening now is a regurgitation of the prior, a view which I strongly share with cautious steps of care as I traverse on the terrain of implementation and applicability, a pillar which determines the road to victory and development. Be that as it may, these blue prints are nothing if political inclination is divorced from the will of the people and a failed ideology and political route.
I attended a dialogue organised by Tellzim media house at Chevron Hotel weeks ago where Mayor Maboke physically attended, Advocate Mureri physically attended and Deputy Mayor Mahwende send his representative Charles Munganasa. The three presented their manifestos in the full glare of 100s of attendees and questions and answer session was provided.
I then understood why it is difficulty for those in authority and power to come back to people after 5 years to campaign because chances are high that they will be coming back to promise what they failed to do or implement during their term of office but now lying in various ways. I will highlight in passing the presentations made thereof.
Mahwende Wellington, ZANU PF
~ His campaign is anchored on the Vic range housing scheme which he brags that he initiated the housing policy in Masvingo
~He bragged that he was elected the deputy Mayor of Masvingo City by the opposition Councillors under MDCA because they looked around themselves and failed to get a suitable candidate to be deputise Maboke Collen Maboke
~ He bragged that under his tenure they managed to construct West End clinic which was however opened by Mohadi Kembo the Zanu Pf Vice President
~He claimed that he will move to modernise the roads under Masvingo Urban jurisdiction
~He however bemoaned that the council resolutions affected their term of office as opposition Councillors were fighting and some were recalled.
Maboke Collen, Independent
~ His campaign is anchored on the repeal of the Urban Councils Act which he said was the limiting factor to the success of Urban Councils
~He is basing his campaign on a non partisan pillar which he believes is killing Zimbabwean politics, hence independent
~He is saying the people shall decide his fate and he will caucus with them whenever there is a binding decision to be made in parliament rather than relying on political party caucuses
~He is also said he achieved a lot as a City Mayor under MDCA and his success will determine his term of office as an Urban Constituency MP
Advocate Mureri Martin, CCC
~His pillar of campaign is based on the establishment of a women cluster charter which shall push the issues of Masvingo Urban women
~He said he shall establish a Constituency Development Committee which shall oversee the affairs of development in the Constituency and that committee shall have jurisdiction over CDF with inclusion of SDC committes, Church leaders, academics and opinion leaders
~He promised to be the voice of Masvingo Urban in the Constituency, and to be the eye of government oversight in all institutions in the Constituency
~He promised to push a parliamentary agenda which shall be pro people as he carries vast knowledge from the law field and a defender of political victims, women abuses, children abuses and realignment of all legal statutes as there must be harmonisation of the 2013 constitution and all amendments.
Notwithstanding the above, the tale of 2 mayors who are basing their campaigns on Urban Councils Act and their overated achievements in their term of office in the council. For anyone from Zanu Pf party to blame the lack of resolution on transformation of cities during his term of office is an indictment to humanity because it is the minister of local government who happens to be the defacto Mayor of all cities as there is no policy which can be passed by councils without his permission. For someone who has been in Masvingo to hear Mahwende bragging on the Victoria Range housing scheme as an achievement is again an insult to humanity. That housing scheme and farm is and remains a government state land which could not have been given or allocated to individuals lest only under corrupt and elitist arrangement. That housing scheme falls under two councils with interference between Masvingo RDC and Masvingo City Council. A land commission was set up in 2021 which implicated land moguls like the Chiredzi Former Chairman Francis Moyo who is running for Chiredzi Central Constituency MP under Zanu Pf. The Masvingo Land commission enquiry pitted Mahwende and their operations revealed that they fleeced the government and council of a lot of Masvingo under the dubious cooperatives with the report yet to be published to the residents. This is one of the fights that Advocate Mureri Martin pledged to fight and unearth until justice is delivered to all the citizens who were fleeced of their monies by the barons and the Councils which were deprived of their revenues by the individuals now running as our saviours.
Secondly, for Mayor Maboke to claim that the people shall be his pool of decision making is not only an insult to the residents because the bills has sky rocketed under his term of office, he failed to create platforms for feedback meetings with residents as was done by Former Mayor Fidze who interacted with people weekly. Consultations with residents was the norm under the previous council term led by Mayor Fidze but under the leadership of Mayor Maboke, bills are rebated without input of residents, consultative platforms are advertised in the morning of the same day, budget meetings are notified on the day of meeting, all this being an attempt to frog march residents to the altar of political Machiavellianism under the guise of pseudo consultations. Basing a whole campaign under the repeal of ACA shows how devoid a manifesto is only unless the Mayor is detached from the demands of the office he is envying.
With the limited powers, the Mayor of Harare fought against July Moyo during his 5 year term of office as he stood with people pushing agenda of the residents not freebies or personal aggrandisement. He was suspended many a times because he stood with the people, many shall remember Mayor Mafume for defying the government directive to implement Pomona Agreement , a policy imposed by Local government ministry to fleece residents of their money in what became known as Pomona gate scandal. The stadium was nearly sold to Tagwirei and HCC fought against this arrangement until the elite chickened out the arrangement. Now the stadium is commissioned today under the able leadership of the City Mayor.
MURERI MARTIN, THE LAWYER VERSUS THE POLITICIAN
The battle of the Urban city has attracted the attention of many critics and many take Advocate Mureri as the underdog in the race. People mistook him in his practising robes versus his political standing and acumen. The man has fought several legal battles notwithstanding the villification and fights that he jumped over .
Martin Mureri shall be remembered as one legal mind stood with the victims of political violence from Mwenezi, Chiredzi, Bikita, Gutu, Zaka, Chivi and Masvingo even beyond. Many party activists found themselves behind cells and the household name which they raise was Martin Mureri. Some ended up committing petty crimes on the basis of availability of a man with patient heart , some were accused of indecent assaults, some were accused of cooked murder charges, some were abducted, some were accused of cattle rustling , some were accused political nuisance, the man was available when duty called. Many are legal practitioners but with the target by the regime to all human rights defenders who represent opposition members, many shun representation of political victims. During by Elections last year in 2022, Advocate Mafa and Adv Mureri litigated successfully against an illegal prohibition against the Rujeko popular rally which came to determine the fate of Masvingo by elections. Walk in the city of Masvingo, ask me and anyone will tell you of the goodwill of Mureri even those who never met him physically but showering accolades.
When he joined the political terrain, many thought the journey he has embarked on shall be thorny and hard. Lest, the man who is walking in street by street, ward by ward, and shops by shops with the city Councillors mobilising for the support of CCC and all its Candidates indicates towards a land slide victory. He was elected the Masvingo Urban MDCA Secretary General and was later elected the Chairperson of Masvingo Urban district in 2020. When CCC was formed, he was appointed the Constituency Point Person , a post which he holds to date. This indicates the political animal he is.
The campaign based on Winning Zimbabwe for Everyone has not only attracted many people to join the party but believing that 2023 is the only chance of winning Zimbabwe for Change. The door to door activities led by councillors and constituency campaign teams in the Urban Constituency in silence is indicating towards the land slide victory for CCC in Masvingo Urban Constituency. Against all odds, the political battle in the old city of Zimbabwe , Masvingo is but done, with Martin Mureri being the next legislator of the City against the two Mayors of the city waging a fight against the popular lawyer and political animal.

Saviour Kasukuwere’s application of Direct Access to the Constitutional Court has been dismissed.
*Kasukuwere was challenging a ruling disqualifying him from contesting the August 23 election as an independent presidential candidate.

This election is not just about political affiliations; it’s about safeguarding our future, our environment, our healthcare, and our education system from foreign interference and privatization. The choice is clear – a vote for ZANU PF is a vote for a brighter, more equitable future for all Zimbabweans.
Under the leadership of President ED Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe has seen remarkable progress over the past five years. Despite facing numerous challenges, the government has managed to revitalize our economy, turning dilapidated roads into modern highways, and initiating vital infrastructure projects that have transformed our nation. These achievements are not mere propaganda; they are tangible results that have improved the lives of ordinary citizens.
ZANU PF’s commitment to social welfare is evident in their efforts to provide free personal care for the elderly, stabilize our currency, and ensure affordable housing for families. By Prof Jonathan Moyo | COMMENT | Following an eagerly awaited hearing this morning before a three member bench led by Deputy Chief Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza sitting with Justices Paddington Garwe and Rita Makarau, the Constitutional Court this afternoon dismissed with no order as to costs Saviour Kasukuwere’s application for direct access, to set aside a Supreme Court judgment, that upheld the nullification of his nomination as a presidential candidate by the Harare High Court.
Basing its ruling on a debatable technicality, the bench said through Justice Gwaunza’s it found that Kasukuwere’s application for direct access was in fact a disguised appeal, and on that score ruled that the application was therefore not properly before the Court.
Sadly, the fact that the matter has been decided on debatable technicalities – some of them manifestly dubious – from the High Court, to the Supreme Court, and finally in the Constitutional Court today, leaves unresolved the substantive and critical questions arising from the case regarding:
(i) the constitutionality of section 23(3) of the Electoral Act as a cessation provision on voter deregistration by operation of law;
(ii) the protection of the right to vote enshrined in section 67 of the Constitution; and,
(iii) the meaning of “ordinarily resident in Zimbabwe” in section 91(1)(c) of the Constitution.
The jury is still out on these very fundamental and important questions whose implications are far reaching, as they affect and impact not just on Kasukuwere but also on millions of registered voters in the country, and in the Diaspora; as well as on citizens by birth who have dual citizenship all who, at any given time, are never resident in Zimbabwe for a continuous period of 18 months at constituencies where they’re registered to vote.
Responding to the ruling, Kasukuwere posted on X – formerly Twitter – that the Constitutional Court opened a new avenue to appeal the Supreme Court, saying:
“We have noted the judgement and interestingly it opens new avenues for us to appeal the SC judgement and luckily we are still within time. As long as the court rooms are open, it’s game on until the Fat lady sings. Prof Wel Ncube, Adv Method Ndhlovu, Adv Mutero and team well done. Battles are lost but not the WAR. We fight on”.
But, realistically looking at everything about the case, and with only 15 days to go before polling day, time is no longer on the side of open ended court battles.
Already, ballot printing and postal voting have been compromised by inconclusive nomination challenges in the courts. Further delays will leave the credibility of the election up in smoke to the detriment of not only ZEC’s already badly damaged reputation, but also Zimbabwe’s image.
However, if the rules of the Constitutional Court allow, it is of course only right that Kasukuwere should keep pressing on to enforce his constitutional rights until the proverbial fat lady sings.
Notwithstanding the unresolved substantive constitutional questions raised by the case, and not taking away Kasukuwere’s right and resolve to fight on, the Constitutional Court has spoken and the election needs to go on, limping and bloodied like never before since independence in 1980; after having been damaged by unprecedented legal challenges to the outcome of the Nomination Court that sat on 21 June 2023.
Whatever Kasukuwere does next, or however he chooses to fight on as he has said he will do, one thing that can be said truthfully to shame the devil, is that Kasukuwere’s election campaign since nomination day generated considerable public interest as he projected notable if not remarkable self-confidence as a presidential candidate, which was supported by flashes of message discipline, focus, direction, energy and dynamism that caught doubting Thomases like me by curious surprise.
Meanwhile, as far as Kasukuwere’s case goes, all eyes are on the proverbial fat lady, waiting to hear if or what she will sing, and when, if ever! – Prof Jonathan Moyo
By A Correspondent| There is growing mystery surrounding the disappearance of over US$45 000 and burning of offices at the Harare Central Police Station after the three detectives accused of the offences distanced themselves from the crime scene.
Officer in charge CID Stores and Business Stanley Musekiwa was arrested and charged with theft and malicious damage to property together with his junior subordinates Takaidza Mugwisi and Masimba Gwasumba.
They are accused of faking a break-in of the exhibit office and stole US$45 500 before setting the room on fire.
Questions have however arose after the lawyers representing the trio challenged the investigating officer Lovemore Chifamba to prove how they are linked to the offence.
Musekiwa’s lawyer Admire Rubaya questioned the logic of the police to arrest his client who was not on duty when the offence occurred leaving out the detectives who were on duty and responsible for guarding the exhibit room in question.
It emerged a detective who was guarding the exhibit room left his point of guard after the generator had run out of fuel and went to sleep in the car before the alleged fire and theft.
Rubaya argued those who were on duty know about the money and who broke into the room and not the trio who were not on duty.
He questioned the criteria used in arresting people who were not at the scene, leaving out over five detectives who were on night duty and manning the burnt exhibit room.
The investigating officer also conceeded that as things stand, there is no direct evidence linking the trio to the offence as there is no CCTV footage or any witness placing them on the scene and that there is no one who saw them setting the room on fire or stealing the money.
He made a startling admission that the Harare central police station is not covered under closed circuit television notwithstanding the presence of cameras outside the charge office.
He said Musekiwa was being arrested because of his office as the officer in charge CID stores and business and being overally in charge of the exhibits.
He also conceded that when Musekiwa finished his duty on Saturday at 4 pm wherein a hand over take over was done and everything was intact.
The State alleges the trio took advantage of a power cut at the station and broke into the exhibit room and made way with the money and burnt the room.
A Harare businessman has accused the deputy prosecutor general Michael Reza of taking bribes from his business rival in order to influence court cases.
Georgios Katsimberis, who is facing a charge of defrauding Pokugara Properties owned by controversial land baron Kenneth Raydon Sharpe, made the allegations during cross examination at the Harare magistrates court on Monday.
Kastimberis said Reza was in the habit of attending court whenever his cases engineered by Sharpe are heard and even when he was not the prosecutor.
He cited a case where former Harare City Council chief building inspector Roy Nyabvure was arrested at the instigation of the prosecutor general after testifying in a case involving the property developer.
Katsimberis claimed Reza misled the police by saying Nyabvure was not testifying in any case before the courts, which led to the inspector’s arrest.
Sharpe and Katsimberis have several court cases against each other where they appear either as complaints or the accused.
The property developer said Reza has also been using his office to block him from accessing vital documents that he needs for his case before the Constitutional Court.
In one of the letters concerning the documents, Reza declared that he would not be compelled by anyone to release the documents.
“He would never be forced by anyone young or old, tall or short to respond to the request for further particulars,” read one of the documents read in court.
Katsimberis’ lawyer Tinomuda Chinyoka asked the property developer how he felt after reading Reza’s lawyer.
“It made me feel very uncomfortable,” he replied.
“It was proof to me that the courts were compromised and that there was no reason for him to actually make that statement.
“It was a derogatory statement to say he is above the law and that he also does not respect my rights.
“And that he was a law unto himself. And very disrespectful to the magistrate presiding over the case.
“What it did is to confirm that this is an incentivised prosecution because this is not the only time that Mr Reza got dramatic and in doing so I felt that this will not be a fair trial and it confirmed my suspicion.”
Katsimberis said he was aware that he was making serious allegations against Reza.
“It is my true belief and also very serious allegation that I am about to make that Michael Reza is being paid to prosecute me by Ken Sharpe, my ex-partner, and that Mr Reza is not in court doing what’s fair and just,” he said.
“He is abusing his power and State machinery for his personal goal.”
By A Correspondent- A teenage Zimbabwean schoolboy died after he was allegedly forced to drink rat poison by bullies at Queens High School here in Johannesburg.
He was a rugby player at school and a Liverpool fan.
The school is located a few kilometres from the Jo’burg central business district.
The Gauteng Department of Education and the South African Police Service are investigating the matter.
Brian Tatenda Mukwereti Ndlovu (15) died last week at a clinic after complaining of stomach complications.
He had told his mum what had transpired at school.
His distraught mother, Mildred, is asking for authorities to get to the bottom of the story and bring the perpetrators to book.
He first revealed what happened to his neighbour and friend Simba that he was pushed against the wall by a group of boys in the toilet and forced to drink poison.
He came back home and was sweating and I asked him what’s wrong?
“He then revealed that he had been forced to drink poison at school, he repeated the name of the boy who made him take the liquid.
“He even mentioned four more boys at the school, who included his best friend, and said ‘mama if you do not believe me go and ask my four friends.
‘They know what is happening at that school.
‘It started in January 2023 but I could not tell you anything. I was afraid if I told you, you’d come to the school and the boys were still going to come back for me,’” said a sobbing Mildred.
The family rushed him to hospital but he could not make it.
The family says it is reliably informed that there was a group of about six boys who were terrorising other kids at the school.
Last week, there were protests by parents, who feel the school is not doing enough to stop bullying.
The Gauteng Member of Executive Council on Education, Matome Chiloane, visited the school on Monday and assured everyone that his department was working with law enforcement agencies to ensure that if there is any foul play, perpetrators would be brought back to book.
He did not want to confirm that the cause of death was bullying.
His post-mortem results are expected to shed further light on Brian’s death.
School principal, Johan Lourens, said the school takes any reports of bullying seriously.
“There have never been reports from Brian or his family that he was involved in any bullying in the school,” said the principal.
Brian’s family have indicated that there will be a memorial service in Doornfontein at the Kings & Queens Funeral Parlour today.
He will be buried at the West Park Cemetery in Johannesburg on Saturday.
The school has also announced plans to hold a memorial service for the student

THE Constitutional Court has refused to hear the case in which exiled former Zanu-PF political commissar, Saviour Kasukuwere was seeking to have direct access to the top court.
Kasukuwere is seeking to run in the upcoming general elections as an independent candidate.
A bench chaired by Justice Elizabeth Gwaunza said Kasukuwere’s application was an appeal disguised as an application as such was fatal.
Kasukuwere rushed to the Constitutional Court after the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal challenging a High Court ruling removing him from the ballot.
High Court’s decision followed an appeal by a Zanu-PF activist, Lovedale Mangwana who argued that Kasukuwere ceased to be a registered voter having spent over 18 months outside the country.
Following the latest defeat, Kasukuwere said he will be going back to the Supreme Court to appeal.
“Where that takes us is back to the Supreme Court where we are going to seek leave to appeal against that Supreme Court judgment which upheld the High Court’s judgment barring Saviour Kasukuwere from participating in the upcoming elections,” said Kaukuwere’s spokesperson Jacqueline Sande.
“It is not over for us. We still have a pending application before the Constitutional Court again, stating that the High Court order is not valid until it is confirmed by the Constitutional Court. So this in essence is not the end of the game. We are going to fight and ensure that President Saviour Kasukuwere participates as a presidential candidate in the upcoming elections.”

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Commissioner-General, Shepherd Mpofu, has denied that convicted rapist Bobby Makaza’s release under a presidential amnesty was irregular.
Makaza was released in May 2022 after serving less than five years of his 16-year sentence for rɑping a juvenile. His early release has sparked public outcry and condemnation from human rights lawyers.
The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), on behalf of the victim’s parents, filed a court application seeking Makaza’s re-arrest. They argued his release was illegal as rɑpists are not eligible for presidential amnesty.
However, in a response filed on July 31, Commissioner-General Mpofu stated that Makaza was correctly released after assessing his age and identity.
Mpofu said Makaza benefited from Clemency Order 1 of 2023, which granted full remission of sentence to prisoners aged 60 and above, except those sentenced to life imprisonment, death or convicted of public violence.
Mpofu described suggestions that Makaza was ineligible as “malicious and ridiculous”. President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi and Police Commissioner Matanga are named as respondents in the court case.
By A Correspondent- National Chiefs’ Council president Chief Fortune Charumbira says he is not seeking re-election to the helm of the national traditional chiefs’ body at polls that are scheduled for tomorrow.
His current deputy, Chief Mtshane Khumalo of Matabeleland North province, is understood to be one of the frontrunners to succeed Chief Charumbira who has served two terms.
The National Chiefs’ Council is meeting in Bulawayo ahead of elections on Thursday, to elect a new Chiefs’ Council president and the deputy who will automatically become Members of Parliament as Senators.
Thursday’s election will be the culmination of a process that started last week with ZEC holding glitch-free elections to choose 36 chiefs into the National Chiefs’ Council in an exercise that officially kick-started the 2023 harmonised elections.
Chief Charumbira, the outgoing council president, was overwhelmingly voted back as one of the five Chiefs’ Council members from Masvingo province after defeating Chief Neromwe (Mr Clemence Madzingo) of Zaka by 27 votes to 7.
Chief Charumbira is also the president of the Pan African Parliament.
Chief Khumalo hailed Chief Charumbira for his impeccable leadership skills that saw him even getting the support of all African regions to become PAP leader.
He described Chief Charumbira as a repository and sanctuary of the country’s traditional leadership institution with his exemplary leadership depicting the ethos of the past, present and the future.It emerged also that the National Chiefs’ Council has unanimously resolved to deploy Chief Charumbira to an “appropriate post” where the organisation would continue tapping into his wisdom while he also continued to serve as PAP leader.
Chief Chundu (born Abel Mbasera) of Mashonaland West said they still required Chief Charumbira’s wisdom to improve the traditional leadership institution in Zimbabwe.
“There are still many issues that we feel Chief Charumbira’s expertise and leadership will be required as we continue to strengthen the traditional leadership institution.
“We are traditional leaders and we own the soil and we always agree on one position for the good of our institution and the people that we lead so we indeed still need Chief Charumbira’s guidance and services,” said Chief Chundu.
Chief Siansali born Mr Nkatazo Siatabwa of Matabeleland North who said: “Chief Charumbira is behind the growth and transformation of the traditional leadership institution to where it is today and he has vast experience nationally and internationally and we feel it is not prudent to just relegate him to the periphery without tapping from his experience and direction.”

FORMER Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara has predicted another disputed poll for Zimbabwe given the escalation of political violence and other electoral malpractices.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa won the disputed 2018 presidential election by a slight margin.
Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa accused the Zanu PF leader of rigging the election.
Mutambara, however, warned that it would be difficult to change the status quo, citing an unfair playing field, which he said favoured the ruling party.
“People who are creating problems in our country are Zanu PF. They never won any election, actually they rigged. From 2000 up to 2018, Zimbabwe elections have been fraudulent and rigged. All those were problematic elections,” Mutambara said in an interview with Newzroom Afrika over the weekend.
“They pay judges a week before elections. The Judiciary in Zimbabwe is compromised. The possibility of free and fair elections is very unlikely.
“The access to voters roll, fair coverage from State media is problematic, so we are heading to the usual problems which are disputed elections.”
The Judiciary has in the past said it is independent and does not take instructions from the Executive.
He also condemned rising cases of political violence in the country.
“People are in the courts, there have been cases of political violence. The party [CCC] lost its activist in Glen View after being attacked by Zanu PF supporters. There is no political tolerance. There are no political reforms and electoral reforms. There is too much tension as we head towards elections,” Mutambara said.
Last week, Tinashe Chitsunge, a CCC supporter, was killed while fleeing a marauding Zanu PF mob in Glen View 7, Harare.
On the same day, Chamisa’s convoy was reportedly attacked by suspected Zanu PF supporters in Mutasa district, Manicaland province, after addressing a rally there.
Mnangagwa has pledged to ensure peace prevails, but critics say authorities are to blame for failing to act on cases of human rights abuses.
Zimbabwe has a history of disputed elections marred by political violence.

HARARE – The Government of Zimbabwe and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) have signed a Letter of Understanding (LoU) to formalize their collaboration on improving food systems and reforming the social protection system in Zimbabwe.
The LoU aims to bolster the capacity to respond to emergencies and effectively foster investment in agricultural entrepreneurship. The Government of Zimbabwe and WFP will utilize their expertise and resources to accelerate sustainable solutions to food security while consolidating Zimbabwe’s national social protection systems.
The collaboration also includes proactive support for rural and urban livelihoods by anticipating future needs, improving data collection and analysis, and strengthening livelihood opportunities. By doing so, the Government of Zimbabwe and WFP aim to create a more resilient and sustainable food system for the people of Zimbabwe.
“This Letter of Understanding is a way to strengthen the already ongoing work and to ensure that both Government and WFP are accountable to the people they serve”, said Mr. Simon Masanga, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare. “We hope this mutual commitment will ensure that common objectives are fulfilled,” he added.
WFP’s strategic plan for Zimbabwe is based on Zimbabwe’s National Development Strategy 1 and global commitments to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its associated Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). WFP will also work with Zimbabwean authorities and civil society to plan, budget, and make decisions to achieve Zero Hunger.

By A Correspondent- At least 77% of registered voters in Zimbabwe want change of government, according to a latest survey by a local research institute.
A recent survey commissioned by the Public Policy and Research Institute of Zimbabwe (PPRIZ) revealed that the majority of the respondents said they were “most likely” to vote in the August 23 elections.
The survey conducted in July this year in all 10 provinces of the country says the majority of the respondents, 82%, were registered voters.
“More females (46%) are registered to vote compared to their male counterparts (36%). 17% of the registered voters are first-time voters ie 18-23 years,” the report read.
“The majority of the respondents (77%) say they want a new direction in the country.
“Of those that are most likely to vote, more are from rural areas (53%) compared to 47% from urban areas.
“Notably, 33% of the first-time voters say they will definitely vote in the forthcoming election.”
PPRIZ is an independent think-tank led by former State Enterprises and Parastatals minister Gorden Moyo.
At least 66% of the respondents said the economic situation was bad while 68% said the government failed to provide jobs to alleviate poverty.
“Post-election situation: 28% of the respondents say the country will be better off after the election, 25% say it will be worse off, 27% do not know while 19% say the country will be the same as it is today,” the report read.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa is seeking re-election, having won the disputed 2018 polls by a narrow margin.
His main challenger, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa, is having another go at the presidency.
Self-exiled former minister Saviour Kasukuwere is back and forth at the courts challenging his disqualification.
There is only one female presidential candidate, United Zimbabwe Alliance leader, Elisabeth Valerio, down from four in 2018.
According to the PPRIZ survey, 61% of the respondents said it is time for women to assume more national leadership roles.
“Ironically, more than half (50%) of the respondents say they would not vote for female or youthful candidates for president in the forthcoming election,” the report says.
“Vote-buying: 44% say they will refuse to take bribe and they will vote with their conscience, 40% will take the bribe and vote with their conscience while 11% will take bribe and vote for the briber.
“5% is undecided whether to take the bribe or not.”
The report also noted with concern the rising cases of political violence across the country.
A CCC supporter was killed last week in Glen View, Harare, in another case of political violence.
“Notably, 33% of the respondents from Manicaland province, 24% Masvingo province and 19% Mashonaland East province said they have witnessed violence in the last two months.”
On trust issues, only a few respondents said they trust political parties (15%), media (19%), Parliament (20%), Judiciary (20%), police (22%), Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (23%) and the military (28%).
“However traditional leaders (37%) and International and regional election observers (30%) fared much better than the rest of the other institutions.”

By A Correspondent- Three Harare-based detectives appeared in court yesterday charged with stage-managing a break-in at Harare Central Police Station stores office before stealing an undisclosed amount of money kept as exhibits.
Stanley Musekiwa (46), Takaidza Mugwisi (36) and Masimba Stanely Gwasunda (43), all from CID Stores, were facing theft and malicious damage to property charges when they appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa.
The trio was remanded in custody to today for bail application.
Musekiwa is an inspector and is the officer-in-charge CID Stores and Business Harare, while Mugwisi and Gwasunda are his subordinates.
It is the State case that on June 23, 2023, Mugwisi recovered US$40 500 from one Carlington Gengezha, who had been arrested for breaking into and stealing money from a property in Belvedere, Harare.
He surrendered the money to Musekiwa as the officer-in-charge.
Musekiwa handed the money to Gwasunda, an exhibit officer.
Musekiwa and Gwasunda were supposed to put the money in a safe at the CID Homicide Harare for safekeeping.
On August 6, 2023 Mugwisi was deployed on night guard duties at CID offices, including the exhibit room.
On the same date at around 0100 hours, the trio took advantage of darkness following an electrical fault at Harare Central Police Station and stage-managed a break-in before stealing the money.
They later allegedly set the room alight, destroying several exhibits consisting of stoves, a fridge, a bed, clothing, crates of beer, cellphones, television sets, radio sets and gas tanks.
By A Correspondent- A Mukumbura man who allegedly killed a woman and dumped the body in a bush has been arrested after confessing to the killing during a church service.
Lameck Masumukire (25) allegedly killed Petunia Gomo (20) in Mukumbura Village, Mashonaland Central on 5 August after suspecting she was bewitching him.
While police were still investigating, Masumukire made a confession at church.
Police did not reveal which of his fellow congregants snitched on him when they released a statement about his arrest.
“Police in Mukumbura have arrested Lameck Masumukire (25) in connection with a case of murder in which Petunia Gomo (20) was found dead in a bushy area near Senga Village, Chiswiti, Mukumbura on 05/08/23.

HEALTH experts are on high alert amid reports of an increase in cases of mumps in Harare.
In a statement, Harare City Health Department Director, Dr Prosper Chonzi indicated that several cases have been recorded at various health centres across Harare.
Dr Chonzi urged those infected to seek treatment at health centres.
The Harare City Health Department is still in the process of compiling data of those who have been affected by the acute viral infection caused by the rubulavirus.
In May, South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) declared an outbreak of mumps following a sudden rise in cases of the disease in the country.
China is the top country with mumps cases in the world.
As of 2021, mumps cases in China stood at nearly 120 000, translating to 53 percent of the world’s mumps cases.
Other countries in the top five are Kenya, Madagascar, Ghana and Ethiopia.

Harare giants Dynamos are set to appoint Genesis Magombe as head coach, following the dismissal of Herbert Maruwa.

HEALTH experts are on high alert amid reports of an increase in cases of mumps in Harare.
In a statement, Harare City Health Department Director, Dr Prosper Chonzi indicated that several cases have been recorded at various health centres across Harare.
Dr Chonzi urged those infected to seek treatment at health centres.
The Harare City Health Department is still in the process of compiling data of those who have been affected by the acute viral infection caused by the rubulavirus.
In May, South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) declared an outbreak of mumps following a sudden rise in cases of the disease in the country.
China is the top country with mumps cases in the world.
As of 2021, mumps cases in China stood at nearly 120 000, translating to 53 percent of the world’s mumps cases.
Other countries in the top five are Kenya, Madagascar, Ghana and Ethiopia.
Signs and symptoms of mumps involve swelling of salivary glands which last more than two days.-ZBC News

Rising Zimbabwean tennis stars proved that they are at par with the best in the world after three players made the ITF Juniors J60 tournament podium at Harare Sports Club.
The girls were at the centre of the success story with Sasha Chimedza reaching the final, before losing 6-4, 3-6, 5-7 in a closely contested match against Madagascar’s Andraina Mitia Voavy, while Tadiwanashe Mauchi and partner Iriela Rajaobelina finished second in the girls’ doubles.
The boys could not make it to the singles’ final which was eventually won by China’s Fumin Jiang.
However, Thompson Thomu restored parity for the hosts in the boys’ doubles, partnering Great Britain’s Liam Channon to clinch the boys’ doubles title with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Allan Gatoto and Lev Seidman.

By- Three Harare police officers stage managed a break-in at Harare Central Police Station Stores office and stole money before setting it ablaze have appeared in court.
Stanley Musekiwa (46) from ZRP CID Stores, Takaidza Mugwisi (36) from CID Stores and Masimba Stanely Gwasunda (43), ZRP CID Stores were facing theft and malicious damage to property when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Marehwanazvo Gofa.
Musekiwa is an Inspector and is the Officer In Charge of CID Stores and Business Harare.
Mugwisi and Gwasunda are subordinates of Musekiwa.
It is the State’s case that on June 23 2023 Mugwisi recovered cash amounting to US$40 500 from one Carlington Gengezha who had committed unlawful entry and theft in Belvedere, Harare. The recovered cash and US$5 000 which had been recovered in different cases were taken into possession by Musekiwa the Officer In Charge and he handed it to Gwasunda who is the Exhibit Officer.
Musekiwa and Gwasunda who were supposed to place the money in a safe at CID Homicide Harare for safekeeping after being instructed by Deputy Director Crime CID Zimbabwe (name not given) instead stashed the cash into a four-plate stove oven drawer which was in office 26 CID Stores and Business Harare.
On August 6 2023 Mugwisi was deployed on night guard duties securing CID offices that include the exhibit room.
On the same date at around 1 am the three accused persons took advantage of darkness after an electrical fault at Harare Central Police Station and proceeded to office 26.
They stage-managed a break-in by cutting the padlock keys that secure the screen gate using a bolt cutter to cut while in actual fact they used keys to open the door to gain entry. They opened the four-plate stove oven drawer which was securing the cash and stole it and yet to be quantified exhibits before they set the room alight thereby destroying several other exhibits comprising of two four-plate stoves, a fridge, a bed, various clothing, several crates of beer, cellphones, several televisions, radios and gas tanks.
The fire caused extensive structural damage to the building and the value of the destroyed exhibits and building is yet to be quantified. Herald
By-MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has chickened out of the Presidentichickened al rate two weeks before the polls.
Mwonzora announced his withdrawal Tuesday, accusing the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) of rigging the impending polls.
He said the decision of the ZEC to bar the party’s 87 MP candidates was evidence of rigging.
This withdrawal comes amidst allegations of massive irregularities by ZEC and Zanu PF.
Herbert Maruwa has been fired from his position as the head coach of Dynamos.
The gaffer only took over the reins in ahead of this season following his departure from Black Rhinos.
After falling behind in title, the Glamour Boys hierarchy gave him a second ultimatum, in which he had to win all the next five games.
However, he didn’t survive this time and the club fired him following the team’s goalless draw against Hwange on Sunday.

CONCESSION – The late former Finance Minister Christophe Kuruneri’s wife Paidamoyo (60) was slapped with six months jail term for defeating the course of justice by Concession magistrate Joshua Nembaware on Monday.
Kuruneri was arrested together with her driver Sinotile Magezi (54) after they allegedly blocked police officers from investigating a stock theft case at her farm in Mazowe.
The duo were lucky to escape custodial sentence after the magistrate conditionally suspended the sentence.
They will however perfom 105 hours of community service each.
The state led by Precious Khanye alleged on May 16 police officers from Mazowe went to Ascortvale farm to investigate a stock theft involving the two.
When police officers told Magezi that they wanted to take him to the police station for him to assist them with investigations all hell broke loose as the suspects locked the gates on Kuruneri’s orders there by baring the officers to leave their premises.
Another charge was added on the two leading to their arrest.

Addressing the press briefing at the party headquarters on Tuesday, Mwonzora described the 23 August elections as a sham.
He said disputes on the 23 August elections were being decided on technicalities instead of the constitution.
Mwonzora said his party parliamentary candidates were unfairly disqualified, a move he said was a punishment against his party’s decision to challenge the delimitation report.

CRISIS in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) says labelling the organisation regime change agents is a usual tactic used by dictatorships worldwide to muzzle all voices which attempt to hold them to account.
In a recent interview with NewsDay (ND), CiZC chairperson Peter Mutasa (PM) said this would, however, not silence them. Below are excerpts of the interview.
ND: When was CiZC born, and what prompted its birth?
PM: The CiZC was formed in August 2001 by several civil society organisations and the formation of the coalition was meant to spearhead a collective civil society response in addressing the multi-faceted crisis of governance and governmental legitimacy then engulfing Zimbabwe. The formation of the coalition was also informed by the need to push for a developmental trajectory informed by the people and inclusive of every citizen regardless of creed.
The coalition is a membership-based organisation and currently has 92 institutional members. These members are organised by thematic committees namely youth, gender, advocacy, peace building, arts, information and human rights committees.
The coalition also has a regional information and advocacy desk which operates from our office based in Johannesburg, South Africa, whose major role has been to champion the accurate projection of Zimbabwe’s challenges not only in the region but internationally. This is anchored on our belief that resolving Zimbabwe’s challenges requires informed solidarity from her regional neighbours and the international community.
ND: Can you briefly outline the journey towards attainment of democracy and inclusive national development in Zimbabwe?
PM: The journey has not been an easy one, especially taking into consideration the increasingly authoritarian nature of our State, more notably at least since 2000. The 22 years of our existence symbolise years of trials and tribulations characterised by State repression and closure of the democratic space.
It is unfortunate that in response to our calls for a genuinely people-centred governance framework, the State has responded essentially by further constricting the civic and democratic space, which is supposed to be the lifeline of a constitutional and participatory democratic governance framework. Instead, the State has resorted to name-calling, restrictive laws and brute force, characterised by abductions, arbitrary arrests, torture as well as extra-judicial killings, but we have remained vigilant and continue to be guided by our vision.
The journey has not been easy, but we have soldiered on and the coalition continues to leave an indelible footprint in the fight for democracy and good governance in Zimbabwe.
The heightening of the closure of civic and democratic spaces that we have seen post the November 2017 coup just serves as a reminder to comrades and the generality of citizens alike, that the struggle continues and we must continue to push until we realise the dream of inclusive national development in Zimbabwe.
I cannot overemphasise the apparent pointers to an increasingly authoritarian State we continue to see — the militarisation of key state institutions, persecution of dissenting voices, obscene levels of corruption and plunder of State resources and weaponisation of the Judiciary among many other vices.
Our antidote to these vices and resolving the long-standing crisis in the country is also simple. Zimbabweans must be assisted to have a genuine national dialogue process.
What will this dialogue seek to do? It must seek to help Zimbabwe return to full norm compliance in modern statecraft by implementing comprehensive electoral, social, economic and political reforms. Such reforms must be undergirded by a firm commitment to return to political legitimacy and the restoration of constitutionalism.
A devolved constitutional State (entails) the declaration of rights is the cornerstone of economic development; a political system built on a free and fair electoral system; and a competitive multi-party system that strengthens the social contract and underpins governmental legitimacy.
It is incumbent upon the country’s leadership to desist from cosmetic approaches on the issue of a national dialogue and engage all the key stakeholders including but not limited to political actors themselves, business, civil society in its entirety — the church, labour, students, women’s movements, peasants, war veterans, ethnic minorities — every section of our varied population must be included and represented in this national dialogue.
ND: The CiZC has been accused of being a “regime change outfit that continuously seeks to please its Western masters”. How do you react to these allegations?
A fourth suspect involved in the E-Creator Electronic Commerce company case, where several individuals were defrauded of US$1 million in a Ponzi scheme, was apprehended and presented in court on Saturday.
Abraham Mutambu, who had evaded arrest by relocating to his rural home in Chihota, appeared before Magistrate Yeukai Dzuda. The magistrate remanded him to today for a bail application.
According to the allegations, in January 2023, the accused conspired with Jao Jiatong, Trymore Tapfumanei, and Justine Muchekenya, who are already in custody for the same case, along with other individuals who are still at large. They devised a plan to defraud unsuspecting Zimbabweans through an online investment Ponzi scheme.
On February 7, 2023, they established and registered a company named E-Creator Electronic Commerce (Pvt) Limited with the Zimbabwean Registrar of Companies. The company, with registration number 2853/23, operated from rooms 15 and 16 on the 10th floor of the Joina City Building in central Harare.
The accused then presented the company as an online e-commerce operator with a global internet presence.
Between February and July 2023, the accused, who was based at the company’s headquarters in Joina City, collaborated with his co-accused and deceived thousands of Zimbabweans by falsely promising substantial monthly profits based on their investments.
Numerous individuals from across the country joined the company and invested an estimated US$1 million through various EcoCash numbers provided on the platform by the accused. To make the company more enticing, the accused appeared on national television, traditional and social media, advertising its services and recruiting more victims into the scheme.
The accused expanded the company by opening branches throughout the country and recruiting additional participants.
On July 3, 2023, some complainants encountered difficulties accessing their funds and sought clarification from the company. The accused assured them that a system upgrade was causing the issue and that access to their funds would be restored in due course. However, on July 5, 2023, the complainants discovered that the E-Creator scheme had collapsed, resulting in the loss of all their invested funds and blocked withdrawals.
Investigations led to the arrest and detention of the other three accused individuals. Further investigations led to the apprehension of the accused, who had relocated to the Chihota communal areas. As a result of the accused’s actions, the complainants suffered a loss of US$1 million, and no funds were recovered.
By A Correspondent- A Harare man last week went berserk and stabbed four people, two of them fatally.
Among the four was a police office who attempted to subdue him.
Allegations are that on August 3 this year, the accused person Saratoga Masere (26) had a misunderstanding with his father and neighbours came to find out what was happening.
The accused, who was violent at the time, reportedly locked himself in his room.
The now-deceased Dino Mpofu of Lonchivar, Southerton, who was among the neighbours, tried to approach the accused in a bid to resolve the problem.
Masere opened the door armed with an okapi knife and charged towards the crowd outside the house.
The startled neighbours bolted, but the accused caught up the now-deceased and stabbed him in the chest.
The deceased fell down as blood gushed out of the wound and was rushed to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
During the fracas, Masere also allegedly stabbed the victim’s son, Kim Mpofu (16), before stabbing a police officer who had tried to subdue him.
He also stabbed Lameck Nguwo Mazvunara (73).
Mazvunara died the following day, bringing the number of dead to two.
After committing the offence, Masere went to his rural area in Masere village, Chief Musana, Bindura to evade arrest, but police tracked him down and arrested him.
The body of the now-deceased is at Sally Mugabe Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
Masere yesterday appeared at Harare Magistrates Court in leg irons and was remanded in custody to August 22, 2023, pending indictment at the High Court for trial.
By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) last week confiscated thousands of Zapu campaign T-shirts at the Beitbridge Border Post.
The regalia, which was brought into the country by cross-border transporters and was seized on August 4, consisted of seven bags weighing 134kg — a donation by South Africa-based party supporters.
Zapu spokesperson Mso Ndlovu confirmed the seizure yesterday saying efforts were being made to have the consignment released by the tax collector.
“They are still held by Zimra, but we have dispatched a team to the border to get them released,” Ndlovu said.
He said since the launch of their party manifesto and the successful nomination of their candidates, there has been an escalation of repression against Zapu.
“But this will not deter us one bit. It gives us more determination to confront the devil eye-ball for eye-ball,” Ndlovu said.
Zapu South Africa chapter provincial secretary for administration Godfrey Viki said: “Zapu SA provincial members bought party regalia of thousands T-shirts and sent them to Zimbabwe.”
A Zimra receipt dated August 4 states that the goods are pending clearance by bill of entry and payment of State warehouse rent.
“You are hereby notified that the goods described below have been detained for stated reasons and prescribed State warehouse rent is payable from the date of detention,” the Zimra receipt read.
“If they remain uncleared for three months from the date of this notice, they will be sold in terms of section 39 of the Customs and Excise Act [Chapter 23:02].”

By A Correspondent- Murdered Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) supporter Tinashe Chitsunge’s 27-year-old wife Dzidzisai broke down in tears as reality struck, her husband was now just a memory, another statistic on Zimbabwe’s growing list of political violence victims.
Clinging onto her four-year-old son Sean while seated an arm’s length from her 11-year-old daughter Shanelle, Dzidzisai cut a lonely figure among the tens in their home and hundreds more of CCC supporters singing in Glenview 7 streets.
Sean is in Early Childhood Development (ECD) while Shanelle is a Grade Six pupil.
Chitsunge was stoned to death on Thursday by suspected Zanu-PF supporters who declared Tanaka area, adjacent to his home, a no-go zone for any opposition campaigns ahead of Zimbabwe’s August 23 General Elections.
Videos of his lifeless body lying less than 200 metres from his home, where he had wanted to seek refuge, broke the internet.
Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) such as Amnesty International (AI) and Heal Zimbabwe Trust (HRT) condemned the killing.
Speaking at his funeral wake Monday, CCC leader and presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa put the blame squarely on President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Chamisa asked why Mnangagwa was quiet as his supporters butchered his and why despite ‘indications that they do not want elections’ they still chose to call for them.
“I have been travelling across the country, people are being herded like livestock, people no longer have peace. People in Zimbabwe are oppressed.
“It is very painful when you look at these children, Zanu-PF has denied these children their future because their father simply decided to support what it did not agree with.
In the rural areas people are being abused, they are suffering. They are being told their names will be written down by Headmen, Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ) officers are traversing every inch on bikes intimidating people and telling them they will be killed if they vote for change.
“Why do you call for elections if you do not want people to elect, why do you call for elections if you do not have confidence, if you do not want them to choose their leader?
“We cannot have a country that forces people to only support a certain political party. Now look, Tinashe is now a statistic, a blemish on our record.
“Mnangagwa is not the rightful leader of this country, if he were he would have come here to pay his condolences, he would have called for justice and warned the perpetrators that we do not do that in this country.”
Moments before Chamisa spoke, party supporters retraced Chitsunge’s footsteps, stopping at his murder site to sing Zanu makauraya, a rendition of Zimbabwe’s popular funeral song Ndimi Makauraya which points out those that would be suspected of having had a hand in the death of loved ones.
Tens looked on up trees, roofs as he spoke, castigating Zanu-PF and calling for justice.
In announcing to journalists that 12 suspects were in police custody, Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe promised that the ZRP will not look at one’s political affiliation in its investigation of Chitsunge’s murder.
“I wish to reiterate that the government of Zimbabwe does not condone acts of political violence by individuals, groups, or political parties under the guise of campaigning for the elections.
“My Ministry has directed the Commissioner General of Police (Godwin Matanga) to arrest perpetrators of violence without looking at one’s political stature, status, identity or financial muscle. Therefore, all malcontents who want to damage the image of the country and discredit the forthcoming elections will have themselves to blame.”
Chitsunge’s postmortem results were expected on Monday according to one of his brothers present at the wake with his burial set for Tuesday in Buhera.
As Chamisa left for Norton where he had scheduled rallies, only a few tens remained behind, most of whom were victims in the melee that cost Tinashe’s life.

Thirteen suspected Zanu PF supporters who allegedly attacked a group of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activists in Harare’s Glenview suburb last week leading to the death of one opposition supporter face a lesser charge of public violence.
This is according to court papers presented when the group appeared at the Harare magistrate’s court for initial remand on Monday.
Tinashe Chitsunge was among scores of CCC activists who came under attack by stone throwing Zanu PF supporters as they were going about party campaign activities in the politically volatile suburb.
According to court papers, the group is being accused of “Public violence as defined in section 36 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23”.
They are Ruzivo Mapuranga, 39, Pauline Chikomo, 37, Brian Mutanga, 38, Berrington Mutanga, 36, Emma Munana, 40, Tawanda Muchatisi, 29 and Tawanda Kaseke, 32.
Also among the accused are Munashe Nyakabau, 18, Tinashe Mabheki, 35, Fadzayi Madzinga, 27, Forget Kanyuru, 29, Phenias Kamwende, 28, and Cleopas Ndlovu.
The group was on Monday remanded in custody pending bail ruling on Tuesday afternoon by presiding magistrate Dennis Mangosi.
According to court papers, on August 3, the group started playing soccer at Chimunhu Ground in Glenview well aware that CCC had booked the venue for its rally.
Court further heard that when police tried to disperse them, they started throwing stones and during the process, CCC members arrived for the party rally and the two groups began throwing rocks at each other.
It is further alleged the situation became more tense, forcing CCC supporters to take cover in their motor vehicles.
Unfortunately, Chitsunge died during the commotion.
The 13 were then arrested the next day and brought to court over the weekend for their initial appearance.
During their appearance, Monday, prosecutor Zebediah Bofu opposed bail arguing the suspects were likely to interfere with witnesses if granted bail.
Bofu also told court the group was defiant considering that they threw stones at the police who tried to disperse them from a venue which was reserved for a CCC rally.
However, the 13, through their lawyer Steven Chikotora, argued that their arrest was a coordinated attack on Zanu PF cell leaders.

In a video he posted on his Instagram account, Holy Ten urged Zimbabweans to rally behind President Mnangagwa citing developmental work he is doing around the country. Watch the video below for more.

In response to Holy Ten’s endorsement of President Mnangagwa, some social media users have stated that they no longer listen to his music on platforms such as Spotify. This backlash is not unique to Holy Ten, as other artists like Kicky Badass, Sandra Ndebele, Mambo Dhuterere, and Allan Chimbetu have also faced similar criticism after endorsing Mnangagwa.

Founding member for Harare MUMC Choir Vabvuwi Sekuru Samson Kamuriwo has died.
He was 83.
Kamuriwo died this morning at a local hospital after a long illness.
Writing on their social media handle, the choir expressed sadness with choir chairman Abraham Kawadza describing him as prayerful, humble and exemplary.
Kamuriwo formed part of the 40 plus men that started the legendary choir, formerly known as Harare West District MUMC Choir and was a mainstay in the early albums of the choir until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, five children, 16 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
Self-exiled presidential aspirant Saviour Kasukuwere has challenged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) to stop printing ballot papers without his name unless the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) bars him from participating in the August 23 polls.
The former Zanu-PF political commissar recently approached the ConCourt on appeal after the Supreme Court and High Court disqualified him from contesting the polls.
The matter will be heard today at the ConCourt.
In a letter to Zec, Kasukuwere’s lawyers Sande Legal Practice said any ballot printing without Kasukuwere’s name was illegal as there was no order “barring our client from participating”.
“The High Court order which you seem to rely on is invalid unless confirmed by the Constitutional Court and as such there is no reason for you to proceed to print the ballot without our client’s name and face appearing thereon,” the lawyers wrote to Zec in a letter dated August 4, 2023.
Last week, ConCourt judge Justice Paddington Garwe ordered that Kasukuwere’s appeal be heard on urgent basis.
“Consequent upon the application in CCZ 5/23 [which] is to be heard on an urgent basis, the parties are to file their papers as follows; “(i) the respondents are to file their papers, if any by 4pm on Friday 4 August, (ii) the applicant is to file his answering affidavit and heads of argument, if any, by 4pm on Saturday, 5 August 2023, (iii) the respondents are to file their heads of argument, if any by 4pm on Sunday, 6 August 2023. The matter is set down for hearing before this court on Tuesday 8 August 2023 at 9.30,” according to an order by the Court Registrar.
Kasukuwere was among the 12 presidential aspirants who successfully filed their nomination papers on June 21.
Opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) leader Douglas Mwonzora has called for an urgent press briefing amid reports that he is set to pull out of the 23 August Presidential elections.
Just last week, Mwonzora unveiled his election manifesto where he made a number of promises to the electorate but barely a week later, he is chickening out.

On the men’s side, young Zimbabwean starlet, Mandlenkosi Mthethwa was a silver medalist in the Junior Men category.

A suspected case of child abuse ended fatally after a couple from Zvimba allegedly killed their four-year-old niece while seriously injuring the deceased’ six-year-old sister who is currently battling for her life in hospital.
This comes at a time when cases of child abuse ending fatally have become a cause for concern with the police having recorded several such cases in the past week alone.
It is alleged John Zvivi and his wife Lister Sibanda used electric cables to assault the children on several occasions.
The four-year-old’s body was found stashed in a sack with a deformed face.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the couple who are on the run.
Meanwhile, in yet another incident, a gold panner in Gokwe allegedly killed his one-year-old daughter for ritual purposes.
Thomas Muzenda aged 38 allegedly confessed to killing his daughter, for rituals to boost his mining activities.
It is alleged that the suspect took some of his daughter’s body parts to a traditional healer for business-boosting rituals.
It is further alleged that the suspect filed a missing person report in an attempt to conceal his crime.
According to the police, some of the child’s remains were retrieved from a disused well.
The suspect has since been arrested.
In another matter, a 29-year-old man from Mvurwi allegedly beat his seven-year-old daughter to death using an iron rod for soiling herself.
It is alleged that Tinashe John beat the seven-year-old mercilessly before she succumbed to the injuries sustained from the beating.
Allegations are that John went on to bury the child secretly but police received a tip-off and followed up on the information leading to the recovery of the child’s body.
A new Children’s Amendment Act was recently enacted to ensure children are protected from any form of abuse.
Under the new law, those convicted of child abuse attract a custodial sentence of not less than 10 years.

A horrifying incident has unfolded in Gokwe, Zimbabwe, as an artisanal miner, Thomas Muzenda (38), has been apprehended by the police for the brutal murder of his one-year-old daughter, Nenyasha Muzenda.
Startling details emerged when Muzenda confessed to the heinous act, revealing that he took the innocent life in a ritualistic act aimed at bolstering his mining endeavours. The sh0cking incident has sent sh0ckwaves through the community, highlighting the desperate lengths some individuals may go to in the pursuit of wealth and success.
The tragic events unfolded when Nenyasha Muzenda was reported missing, prompting a police investigation in Gokwe, a region known for its artisanal mining activities. For the first time since the romance between Norman Mapeza and FC Platinum began, the miners have been beaten at home in three consecutive league matches.
The defending champions, despite playing very attractive football, appear to be out of sorts as far as getting results is concerned and have not won any of their last five matches.

By- Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) outgoing legislator for Mutare Central, Innocent Gonese, says if his party is elected into power, it will ensure access to health services by key populations such as lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender, queer and intersex (LGBTQI) to curb the spread of HIV and Aids.
Gonese made the pledge during a political dialogue on health policy proposals convened in Mutare last week by the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) and its partner The Advocacy Core Team (ACT).
According to UNAids, gay men who have sex with men, sex workers, transgender, people who inject drugs, prisoners and other incarcerated people are considered as five main key populations vulnerable to HIV while they lack adequate access to services.
Gonese emphasised that CCC will not be promoting homosexuality, but rather recognising common experiences affecting the LGBTQI community’s health and well-being.
“As CCC we are saying anyone at higher risk of contracting diseases, be it LGBTQI community or young key populations they must have access to healthcare services,” he said.
“By teaching youths about sexual reproductive health care, we are not encouraging teenage sexual activities. We are just recognising that it is happening despite that we do not like it.”
Gonese added: “We may not like homosexuals, but if they are there, they must have access to health care.
“They do it behind the curtain and we do not want them to suffer in silence while they spread STIs and other diseases.”
He said vulnerable groups should not be discriminated against when it comes to access to health care services.
“Young children must be taught about sexual reproductive health so that whenever they indulge in sex they will seek for services.
“This will help our nation to reduce new infections of HIV and various STIs,” said Gonese, adding that CCC will also raise the age of consenting to sex from 16 to 18 years.
He was responding to Zimbabwe National Network of People Living with HIV (ZNNP+) Manicaland coordinator, Moses Chananuka who had asked how a CCC government will work with key populations.
“HIV is now prevalent amongst key populations and other groups of people who must be given health care services.
“As CCC how are you going to work with the LGBTQI community and other key populations who need access to services?” Chananuka questioned.
According to UNAids statistics, key populations and their sexual partners outside sub-Saharan Africa accounted for 80% of new HIV infections in 2016.
In 2016, in sub-Saharan Africa, key populations accounted for 25% of new HIV infections.
National Constitutional Assembly candidate for Dangamvura constituency, Larmeck Mwandunguza pledged free health care services for every citizen if their presidential candidate Lovemore Madhuku is elected.
“If you vote for our president Lovemore Madhuku, everyone will not pay fees at government health care centres and they will be treated for free.
“Expecting mothers will only cater for preparation and they will not pay for delivery as it will be paid for by government,” Mwandunguza said.
He added that the NCA will offer higher pay for health workers.
“NCA will ensure health workers are well motivated to do their work,” he said.
“We will introduce mobile clinics in public places and equip our hospitals with cancer machines.”
Mwandunguza said an NCA government will use money accrued from farming and the sale of mineral resources to improve the health sector.
ZADHR officials revealed that panelists from the ruling Zanu PF party snubbed the political dialogue.
“We have failed to get panelists from Zanu Pf here in Mutare and Bulawayo. They promised to come but they could not show up.
“We made an effort to invite them,” ZDHR secretary Norman Matara said.

By- Thousands of CCC supporters in Sakubva stadium Sunday threw Zim dollar notes in the air after the opposition leader Nelson Chamisa had declared that once he is elected President, he will do away with the local currency.
Excited supporters fished out local currency notes from their pockets and threw them in the air, forcing Chamisa to momentarily stop his speech.
“Let us say goodbye to the valueless local currency. We want to ensure that people earn money that has value. Voting for me will signal the end of the local currency,” Chamisa said.
The local currency is recovering slowly after suffering a sharp depreciation against the United States dollar in May and June.
Chamisa said he was worried about the culture of name-dropping being perpetuated by the Zanu PF-led government.
He said once elected to power, he would end that culture.
“We have seen people killing others, violating laws and behaving as if they are a law unto themselves. They do this while brandishing a Zanu PF flag, which is their protection.
“You see just a few days ago, our supporter was killed in Harare. Nothing will happen. There will be no accountability. This is what our country has become and this cannot continue. Under my government, violence will be a thing of the past,” Chamisa said.
Violence and intimidation ahead of the August 23 general elections, especially in rural areas, have been on the increase, with chiefs and headmen reportedly leading the onslaught.
Chamisa said he had been approached by chiefs who claimed that Zanu PF was forcing them to write down the names of potential voters.
“Chiefs have been telling me that they are being forced to write the names of their subjects and forcing them to vote for Zanu PF. (President Emmerson and Zanu PF leader) Mnangagwa is behaving like (the late former Rhodesian Prime Minister Ian) Smith, using violence and intimidation to govern without the consent of the people,” Chamisa said.
During a rally in Mhondoro-Mubaira recently, Zanu PF vice-president Kembo Mohadi let the cat out of the bag when he said all chiefs were required to create a register of their subjects and track who they vote for.
On education, Chamisa said he would bring an end to the Continuous Assessment Learning Activities regime, which has brought discomfort to parents and teachers.
The CCC leader said he would introduce free education at primary level and reintroduce grants at university level.
On devolution, the CCC leader said he would ensure that all towns and cities are empowered to make decisions.
Chamisa said Zimbabweans should change the leader of the country if they wanted development and progress.
“The country is heading in the wrong direction. We need to change the coach and the coach is Mnangagwa. He has failed us, failed this nation and we need a new coach,” he said.

The CID offices are in the basement of the Harare Central Police Station.
In a statement to confirm the incident, ZRP said:
The ZRP confirms a fire incident which occurred at ZRP Harare Central complex between 0100 hours and 0800 hours today. Investigations are underway to find out what actually transpired.
This includes the extent of damage to the complex and contents. More details to be released in due course.
Reports suggest that three fire engines were deployed to extinguish the blaze, which was first reported at 1.30 AM.
The incident has sparked a range of opinions, with some questioning the structural soundness of the building while others speculate whether the fire was intentionally set to destroy certain individuals’ case files.

Well-placed sources at the club privy to going-ons, believe Mapeza’s “egotism’ is costing the team.
“He is a solo act kind of coach, which is detrimental in morden football,” said the source.
“He doesn’t listen to anyone, and even his backroom staff’s presence is simply titular.”
Another reliable source at FC Platinum believes the results of Mapeza’s failure to relate well with others at the club
were long overdue.
“Look, this is something that has been going on for sometime, it was not being talked about simply because results were coming but everyone at the club knows the coach doesn’t relate well with others,” said the source.
“Look at the manner in which Tembo Chuma (former goalkeepers coach) left the club. That own it’s on tells you of the fissures at the club, especially in the technical team.”

Police at Kanengo in Lilongwe have arrested a 42-year-old lady, Flora Thom, who hired a lorry and stole her employer’s household items worth over K2 million.
The owner of the house has told police that in June this year he employed Thom as a housemaid at his house in Area 49. Yesterday, August 6, 2023, he and other family members went to church leaving the suspect home.
While her boss was still at church, Thom hired a motor vehicle and packed household items worth over K2 million. But before she left, a boy who was then at a neighbor’s house arrived and immediately informed the owner.
Following a report, police rushed to the scene and rescued the suspect from some angry people. Police also recovered all the items which include furniture, food stuffs, beddings, Plasma TV screen and assorted clothes.
Thom hails from Nangumi Village under Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo. She is expected to appear in court soon.
Police have since reminded people of the need to be careful and cautious when employing house servants to avoid further incidents of this nature.

CITIZENS Coalition for Change (CCC) parliamentary candidate for Cowdray Park says he is not worried about Zanu-PF’s aspiring National Assembly candidate Mthuli Ncube’s perceived influence.
On Wednesday last week, Ncube, who is contesting against CCC’s Pashor Raphael Sibanda, hosted President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Zanu-PF bigwigs at a Star Rally held at Mkhithika grounds in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo.
Sibanda, however, told Southern Eye that he is more in touch with the people than Ncube.
“I heard that the opposition Zanu-PF hosted a huge rally. There is nothing new about it. Every party is allowed to do something big or small. They are scared of the election because they attempted to disqualify us,” Sibanda said.
“It proves to people that they fear us. They have no clear idea of where to take the country. That’s why we have load-shedding and dilapidated roads. We have won this election. In 2018 it ended in the courts and this one is starting there.”
He accused the ruling party of hijacking government projects.
“The people of Cowdray Park have to choose between light and darkness, but it’s unfortunate because my brother in the opposition (Mthuli Ncube) is opposing the will of the people.
“That’s why I call them the opposition. They are manipulating the works of the government to campaign. They took the project of TelOne just like they did with the project of the Ministry of Transport. While we appreciate development, we are saying we want sustainable projects,” he said.
Sibanda described Ncube as an outsider in Cowdray Park.
Ncube’s campaign has taken centre stage with him pulling all stops to win Cowdray Park, having recently completed road works there.
CCC has, meanwhile, been skating on thin ice in Cowdray Park after a High Court ruling had banned Sibanda from contesting for alleged late submission of his nomination forms.
Two CCC candidates are vying for ward 6, Nkosinathi Hove Mpofu and Fikezweni Nyoni are campaigning under the same party ticket.
Mpofu, who was at the weekend roadshow campaign insisted that he is the official party candidate.
The council seat is currently occupied by Zanu-PF’s Kidwell Mujuru, who is seeking a comeback.

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) deployed anti- riot police to Glen Norah where they indiscriminately assaulted residents of Tanaka during the night. This action followed the tragic murder of Tinashe Chitsunge, a member of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), by suspected ZANU PF supporters.
Tanaka primarily consists of ZANU PF supporters who were allocated residential stands by the ruling party. In the aftermath of the incident, some individuals sought temporary refuge with their relatives. Notably, police patrols were observed in the area as early as 8 am, indicating an intensified presence.
According to sources, riot police, locally known as the ‘black boots’ arrived on Wednesday night and proceeded to assault individuals. One source mentioned being fortunate not to have been among those attacked and stated their decision to stay with their aunt until the situation calms down. The source told New Zimbabwe:
The black boots came yesterday (Wednesday) at night and went about beating up people.
We were fortunate not to have been part of those beaten. I have since decided to go to my aunt’s house for a few days until the situation here subsides.
Residents expressed fear in commenting on the matter. Police on Friday reported that ten suspects had been arrested in connection with Chitsunge’s murder. Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe later claimed 12 had been arrested. He said:
My ministry deeply regrets the loss of life which occurred and passes its condolences to the family of Tinashe Edson Chitsunge. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has since arrested 12 suspects in connection with this sad incident.
CCC leader Nelson Chamisa condemned the brutal killing and called on the police to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice is served. Amnesty International, an international human rights organisation, also strongly condemned the violent murder of Tinashe Edson Chitsunge.
Eyewitnesses reported that Chitsunge was brutally assaulted by suspected Zanu-PF supporters while heading to a rally at Tanaka grounds. Although the rally had police authorisation, some Zanu-PF supporters disregarded the authorities and took control of the location. CCC engaged the police to displace the Zanu-PF crowds but was overwhelmed, leading to the ruling party supporters viciously attacking Chitsunge.
By A Correspondent- The ruling Zanu-PF party has denied rewarding convicted rapist Bobby Makaza with a house and a substantial amount of cash during a presidential rally in Mutawatawa, Mashonaland East province, on Saturday.
Makaza was sentenced to 16 years in prison by a Murewa magistrate in 2019 after raping a 10-year-old girl a year earlier.
He, however, served less than five years of the sentence after he was released together with more than 4 200 other prisoners following a clemency order signed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on May 19 this year.
The party in a tweet said it is not true that the minister Mchakaire met Makaza neither did he promise to build him a house.
Said Zanu PF:
“It’s not true. Minister Machakaire did not meet Cde Bobby Makaza. He did not promise to build him a house.”

Witwatersrand University based political analyst Romeo Chasara said the ruling Zanu-PF was setting a wrong precedent by “celebrating” rapists.
“This move by Zanu-PF raises serious questions about the party’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence and promoting justice in Zimbabwe. By rewarding a convicted rapist with a house and cash, the ruling party sends a dangerous message that crimes of this nature can be overlooked and perpetrators can be celebrated. This undermines the efforts of survivors and activists who have been tirelessly advocating for justice and accountability,” he said.

By A Correspondent- Government has told jobless teachers to open their own schools as it cannot employ all of them into the country’s education system.
This was said by Higher and Tertiary Education deputy minister Raymond Machingura during a graduation ceremony at Belvedere Teachers’ College on Friday.
Machingura was speaking in an interview with a local radio station on the sidelines of the graduation ceremony.
“Unemployed teachers should start their own companies which produce stationery and other consumables used in schools or even start their own schools.
“If you look at it, private schools are charging exorbitant fees. So if we have our own teachers with their own private schools, they will not be charging high fees but will be providing quality education,” Machingura said.
The country, with a student population of six million, has a deficit of 3 000 schools.
The government last year launched a blitz across the country to close down hundreds of schools and colleges which were operating illegally.
A//bulawayo24.com&dtd=119A total of 320 out of 448 schools and colleges identified as operating illegally were shut down by authorities in Harare.
But early this year, government re-registered the private schools which had been shut down to accommodate thousands of South Africa-based pupils who are likely to join their parents coming back home following the expiry of Zimbabwe Exemption Permits.
National Council of Student Teachers president Walter Muzamani said encouraging teachers to start their own schools was an admission that the education system has failed.
“That teachers should start their own schools is an admission that it has failed to manage the education system. The government has failed to fund the education system which has resulted in the private education sector thriving.
“It is a fact that private schools are offering quality education compared to public schools,” Muzamani said.
Zimbabwe Teachers Association secretary-general Goodwill Taderera said the establishment of more private schools would result in the further collapse of the public education system.
“If teachers become entrepreneurs, then the education system will be commercialised. It’s privatising the education system which is exclusive to low-income earners. Accessibility to education will be compromised. Government undertook to provide quality education and has to stick to that mandate and not abdicate its responsibility to job-seeking teachers,” Taderera said.
“Currently, people are using ramshackle buildings as schools which have serious effects on the safety of learners. Government has failed to employ teachers and privatisation of education cannot be the solution.”
By A Correspondent- The Zanu-PF campaign train rolls into Jambezi in Hwange district today where the party’s Secretary for Administration Dr Obert Mpofu is expected to address multitudes of supporters.
Jambezi falls under the Hwange East constituency and Cde Mpofu will be drumming up support for President Mnangagwa and the party’s candidate for the National Assembly seat, Cde Alois Sikuka.
Cde Mpofu, who arrived in Victoria Falls yesterday from Mutawatawa in Mashonaland East province where he attended a star rally addressed by President Mnangagwa, said the revolutionary party is on a massive voter mobilisation drive countrywide.
“We will be in Jambezi for a campaign rally which is part of the mobilisation by the party. Yesterday I was in Mutawatawa and I have just arrived here in Victoria Falls ahead of tomorrow’s rally with the candidate for Hwange East,” he said.
Cde Mpofu said the party is not leaving any stone unturned in its drive for 5 million votes for President and Zanu-PF is targeting a clean sweep on August 23.
The rally will be held at Jambezi Centre.
Hwange has three constituencies namely Hwange Central and the Zanu-PF candidate is Cde Reeds Dube, Hwange East with Cde Sikuka and Hwange West where Cde Philani Moyo is the candidate.
Cde Sikuka said he had done his homework in the constituency where he started with door-to-door campaign in every village, interacting with party members and other voters.
He said he established that Zanu-PF has been losing in Hwange largely because of protests over some issues that need to be addressed.
Cde Sikuka said now is the time to address the issues and Zanu-PF will win the seat.
“We will be having Cde Mpofu for the campaign rally in the constituency where I am the candidate. This is an honour and everyone is looking forward to it especially looking at the fact that Cde Mpofu is a son of Jambezi,” he said.
“I have been campaigning in the whole constituency doing village-to-village engagement, teaching Zanu-PF ideology starting with the history of the party and Zimbabwe in general up to independence and formation of opposition parties.”
“I have been asking why people vote for the opposition and the conclusion we established is that this has been a protest vote. People don’t like the opposition.”
Cde Sikuka said there are simple things that need to be addressed to woo the voters such as sharing regalia and welcoming newcomers wholeheartedly.
“President Mnangagwa said that Zanu-PF pocket is big and can fit everyone. That has been my strategy and the response has been positive so far as people are seeing an all-inclusive message,” he said.
President Mnangagwa praised Mashonaland East province on Saturday for mobilising the largest gathering, so far, of ruling Zanu-PF supporters for his presidential election rally at Mutawatawa in Uzumba-Maramba-Pfungwe.

Government has told jobless teachers to open their own schools as it cannot employ all of them into the country’s education system.
This was said by Higher and Tertiary Education deputy minister Raymond Machingura during a graduation ceremony at Belvedere Teachers’ College on Friday.
Machingura was speaking in an interview with a local radio station on the sidelines of the graduation ceremony.
“Unemployed teachers should start their own companies which produce stationery and other consumables used in schools or even start their own schools.
“If you look at it, private schools are charging exorbitant fees. So if we have our own teachers with their own private schools, they will not be charging high fees but will be providing quality education,” Machingura said.
The country, with a student population of six million, has a deficit of 3 000 schools.
The government last year launched a blitz across the country to close down hundreds of schools and colleges which were operating illegally.
A total of 320 out of 448 schools and colleges identified as operating illegally were shut down by authorities in Harare.
But early this year, government re-registered the private schools which had been shut down to accommodate thousands of South Africa-based pupils who are likely to join their parents coming back home following the expiry of Zimbabwe Exemption Permits.
National Council of Student Teachers president Walter Muzamani said encouraging teachers to start their own schools was an admission that the education system has failed.
“That teachers should start their own schools is an admission that it has failed to manage the education system. The government has failed to fund the education system which has resulted in the private education sector thriving.
“It is a fact that private schools are offering quality education compared to public schools,” Muzamani said.
Zimbabwe Teachers Association secretary-general Goodwill Taderera said the establishment of more private schools would result in the further collapse of the public education system.
“If teachers become entrepreneurs, then the education system will be commercialised. It’s privatising the education system which is exclusive to low-income earners. Accessibility to education will be compromised. Government undertook to provide quality education and has to stick to that mandate and not abdicate its responsibility to job-seeking teachers,” Taderera said.
“Currently, people are using ramshackle buildings as schools which have serious effects on the safety of learners. Government has failed to employ teachers and privatisation of education cannot be the solution.”

The ruling Zanu PF party rewarded convicted rapist Bobby Makaza with a house and a substantial amount of cash during a presidential rally in Mutawatawa, Mashonaland East province, on Saturday.
Makaza was sentenced to 16 years in prison by a Murewa magistrate in 2019 after raping a 10-year-old girl a year earlier.
He, however, served less than five years of the sentence after he was released together with more than 4 200 other prisoners following a clemency order signed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on May 19 this year.
The released prisoners included, according to government, rapists and murderers who had turned 60 or older.
The amnesty, which was aimed at decongesting prisons and give offenders a second chance, was met with mixed reactions.
Soon after leaving prison, Makaza became a celebrity in the ruling party for coining Zanu PF’s 2023 election campaign slogan: “ED Huchi”, which is extensively being used at its rallies.
During the rally, Zanu PF political commissar Mike Bimha announced that the party’s youth secretary Tinoda Machakaire is building a house for the ex-convict.
Makaza also walked away with US$700 in cash after Machakaire gave him US$500 while other party members chipped in with US$200.
“Cde Machakaire is building him a house and has also given him cash. Other party members have also chipped in with some cash incentives,” Bimha announced at the rally.
Makaza was called to the high table to meet Mnangagwa, but could not make it in time because he was too far from the podium.
Clad in all-white Zanu PF regalia, Makaza enjoyed celebrity status as ruling party supporters jostled to have pictures taken with him.
Civil society organisations, women’s rights activists and opposition political parties have, however, condemned his release, calling it a slap in the face to survivors of sexual assault and an affront to the principles of justice and accountability.
Witwatersrand University based political analyst Romeo Chasara said the ruling Zanu PF was setting a wrong precedent by “celebrating” rapists.
“This move by Zanu PF raises serious questions about the party’s commitment to addressing gender-based violence and promoting justice in Zimbabwe. By rewarding a convicted rapist with a house and cash, the ruling party sends a dangerous message that crimes of this nature can be overlooked and perpetrators can be celebrated. This undermines the efforts of survivors and activists who have been tirelessly advocating for justice and accountability,” he said.
Former Cabinet minister Walter Mzembi castigated Zanu PF, describing the move as a new low.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us in resetting societal norms and values, redefining what we celebrate as a nation. Rebranding a paroled rapist convict of minor children as a celebrity for coining a campaign slogan ‘ED Huchi’ is a low for many,” he said.
Following the pampering, the activists said the party’s actions not only trivialised the gravity of the crime committed, but also perpetuated a culture of impunity.
In July, Tinashe Chinopfukutwa and Paidamoyo Saurombe of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights wrote to the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu demanding to know on what basis Makaza qualified for amnesty.
Chinopfukutwa and Saurombe were acting on instruction from the victim’s family.
If a court rules that Makaza’s release was illegal, the ZPCS could be forced to re-imprison him and others who were freed.
Prisons said the amnesty for the 4 270 inmates was meant to decongest Zimbabwe jails, but victims of violent crimes said they were not consulted before the perpetrators were freed.
