By A Correspondent| Bulawayo Mayor Councillor David Coltart has apologized to Advocate Fadzayi Mahere and Norman Markham over the comments he made on X where he exonerated self-proclaimed CCC Interim Secretary General of the mess in the opposition movement.

Posting on X Monday morning, Coltart admitted that his comments regarding the Mt Pleasant and Harare East parliamentary seats which are now in Zanu PF’s hands had caused vigorous debate.

He said his comments were not an attack on Mahere and Markham but a deep concern that both of them are nolonger in what he called hard-won spaces.

“Yesterday my comments regarding the loss of two seats to Zanu PF in Harare spurred a vigorous debate. One thing I need to make clear is that my comments were not intended as an attack on either @advocatemahere or @Katazamhondoro Rusty Markham , both of whom are dear and trusted friends. Ironically my comments were borne from deep sadness, concern and regret that neither of them are still in Parliament. Both are amongst the finest Parliamentarians in #Zimbabwe and our Nation is all the poorer not having them there. However my comments were interpreted as an attack on them and for that I apologise unreservedly. Whilst I disagree with the policy of withdrawing from hard-won spaces in general, I shouldn’t by inference have criticized them in particular. I stress that I understand why they took their decision and my respect for them both remains undiminished,” said Coltart.

By Crime and Court Reporter- The Police have released the names of the 16 accident victims who died in an accident that occurred in Beatrice, at the 52-kilometre peg along the Harare-Masvingo highway, on Friday.

Fifteen people died on the spot on Friday, while another, who was admitted to Chitungwiza Central Hospital, passed away yesterday.

The accident occurred when a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter commuter omnibus, carrying 44 passengers who were all members of the Angels Family Apostolic Church, collided head-on with a haulage truck.

Yesterday, police released the names of the deceased minors.

They are Elisha Jack (6), Elija Jack (5), Ezra Jack (1), Leeroy Kido (8), Lloyd Kido (4) and Kelly Kwenda (3), all from Epworth.

The deceased adults are Joyce Mudzinzwa (44), Prudence Mahachi (31), Talent Rangwa (23), Elmod Ncube (18), all from Overspill in Epworth; and Decision Maizivei (26) from Madheu village, Buhera.

Police say the remaining victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin.

In a statement yesterday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said: “Police investigations have established that the accident occurred after an Adolph haulage truck with no passengers on board, which was travelling towards Harare, hit a VW Polo vehicle from behind.

“The VW Polo vehicle was travelling towards Harare with no passengers. As a result, the haulage truck veered off the road to the oncoming lane and was involved in a head-on collision with a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter travelling towards Chivhu with 44 passengers on board.

“The passengers were members of Angels Family Apostolic Church, who were on their way to Makumumavi Shrine, Chivhu,” he said.

Asst Comm Nyathi urged motorists to be vigilant on the roads and observe stipulated speed limits.

“Above all, drivers are implored to abide by the road rules and regulations to safeguard human lives.”

Bodies of the victims were sent to Chivhu General Hospital for post-mortem.

15 people died along Harare-Masvingo road this Friday.

In a statement released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) this Friday, 15 people were killed after a sprinter kombi which was travelling towards Masvingo was involved in a head on collision with a truck travelling towards Harare.

The haulage truck is believed to have tried to avoid a small vehicle, swerved into the opposite lane and hit the commuter omnibus which was heading towards Chivhu.

ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident, saying investigations to ascertain the cause of the accident are underway and more details will be released in due course. ZBC News

By Staff Reporter- The High Court has granted bail to the controversial religious cult leader, Ishmael Chokurongerwa, popularly known as Madzibaba Ishmael, after spending almost two months in remand prison.

Chokurongerwa (54), who leads the Johanne Masowe Penyera Nyika sect, and seven other members of the sect, were arrested for allegedly violating the Burial and Children’s Act, respectively.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the High Court ruled that there was no longer any risk that Madzibaba Ishmael would interfere with witnesses, hence the decision to grant him bail.

Apart from an order to deposit US$ 1,000 with the clerk of court Norton Magistrstes’ Court, the High Court also barred Chokurongerwa from conducting any church gatherings anywhere until the matter is finalised.

He was also ordered not to interfere with witnesses directly or indirectly until the matter is finalised and to report to the police three times a week.

Chokurongerwa’s co-accused; Shingirai Ngawafune (42), Takavengwa Gwenzi (55), Zebedia Sigudu (49), Devlodge Katsande (47), Wonder Kabaya (41), and Siribinio Chikurunhe (53) were granted bail early this month by the Harare High Court. 

The trial for all eight individuals will commence on May 7, 2024, at the Norton Magistrates’ Court.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has made significant changes to his cabinet, including the reinstatement of Winston Chitando as the Minister of Mines and Mining Development.

This decision comes as part of a broader reshuffle that saw the reassignment of several ministers and the appointment of new deputy ministers.

The reshuffle, announced by the government on Wednesday, took immediate effect, signaling a strategic realignment within Mnangagwa’s administration.

Notably, Winston Chitando returns to his former role as Minister of Mines and Mining Development, a position he previously held before stepping down.

In response to the reshuffle, President Mnangagwa emphasized the need for effective governance and accountability within his cabinet.

He stated, “These changes are aimed at enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, and accountability in government operations.”

Alongside Chitando’s reinstatement, other notable changes include the reassignment of Soda Zhemu to the National Housing and Social Amenities Ministry and the appointment of Daniel Garwe as the new Minister of Local Government and Public Works.

Additionally, two new deputy ministers were appointed: Musa Ncube for National Housing and Social Amenities and Headman Moyo for Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Affairs.
