CIO Boss’ Daughter Dies

President Emmerson Mnangagwa accompanied by Vice President General (Rtd) Dr Constantino Chiwenga has paid condolences to the Director General in the President’s Department, Ambassador Isaac Moyo and his family, following the death of their daughter Shumirai on the 3rd of this month.

Shumirai, who was based in Dublin, Ireland was a political activist and was also the founder of Youth Business League Zimbabwe.

The late will be laid to rest in Rutenga on Sunday.

She died at the age of 41 and is survived by two sons, Munyaradzi and Derrick.

Chivhayo Boasts Of Dubious Wealth

Chivhayo told a private daily newspaper that the donations of cars to celebrities he is doing was a fulfilment of such a dream.

The Zanu PF party apologist, who can be rather aggressive online, disclosed that the money he lavishes on others from his own resources and the assistance won’t empty his fat wallet.
“So it is from my personal savings and other earnings that I can choose to be generous and undertake various charitable work. What I have been blessed with to this day is not of my own abilities, but by the grace of God. Blessing other people through what I have been given by God can never deplete or dent my pocket.

The court of public opinion initially discounted these gestures as mere publicity gimmicks.
But the man seems undaunted.
Critics say Chivayo could have used the money to turn around the health sector which is in shambles, but he believes people are sent for different missions and one has to do what his heart tells him to do.
He has also donated US$1 million to the Zion Christian Church which is well-known for its developmental projects around the country.
The church has over the years built schools, dams and constructed roads in their area of operations, which pushed Chivayo to add a “token of appreciation” to help the church continue with the projects.

Mnangagwa Chief Spy’s Daughter Dies In Ireland

By Political Reporter- President Emerson Mnangagwa’s chief spy, who is the head of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO), Isaac Moyo’s daughter, has died.

Shumirai Sandra Moyo died in Dublin, Ireland, from brain cancer early this month.

She died after her mother, Priscilla Zindari-Moyo, Zanu PF MP for Mwenezi West, recently visited her in Dublin while she was bedridden.

Narrating what happened to his daughter, Moyo added:
“She went to work as usual and got sick and was sent home. On the second day she was taken to hospital and was suspected of meningitis and was tested for cancer of the brain. She was swelling in the brain and she spent six weeks in intensive care without eating. Her mother spent a month with her and she couldn’t talk. She passed on when the mother was trying to get back to her again. She was drilled in the head and a tube was put in her head that is the last picture we saw of her before she passed on.

Shumirai will be buried in Rutenga, Mwenezi, on Sunday.

Zinedine Zidane is reportedly one step away from returning to football management after entering talks with German giants Bayern Munich.

Countries that use the gold standard allow for the exchange of currency for gold at a fixed rate. The gold standard is a monetary system backed by the value of physical gold. Gold coins, as well as paper notes backed by or which can be redeemed for gold, are used as currency under this system. The gold standard was popular throughout human civilization, often as part of a bi-metallic system that also utilized silver. Most of the world’s economies have abandoned the gold standard since the 1930s and now have free-floating fiat currency regimes.

**How the Gold Standard Works**

The gold standard is a monetary system where a country’s currency or paper money has a value directly linked to gold. With the gold standard, countries agree to convert paper money into a fixed amount of gold. By holding the piece of paper called ZIG, you will be holding a value of gold. Gold is represented by ZIG; in short, ZIG is the representative of actual gold. The gold standard is a fixed monetary regime under which the government’s currency is fixed and may be freely converted into gold. It can also refer to a freely competitive monetary system in which gold or bank receipts for gold act as the principal medium of exchange; thus, the gold standard is a monetary system in which the value of a country’s currency is directly linked to gold.

With the gold standard, Zimbabwe agrees to convert paper money into a fixed amount of gold. Since we now use the gold standard, it sets a price for gold, and it buys and sells gold at that price. That fixed price is, in turn, used to determine the value of our currency. For example, if we hypothetically set the price of gold at $500 an ounce, the value of the dollar would be 1/500th of an ounce of gold. We must remember that England was the first country to officially implement the gold standard, coinciding with its large discoveries of the metal. So, the criticism of ZIG is highly misplaced.

Zimbabwe is not wandering in the pool of confusion. ZIG follows The Bretton Woods Agreement, which established that the U.S. dollar was the dominant reserve currency, and that the dollar was convertible to gold at the fixed rate of $35 per ounce. It was only in 1971 that President Nixon of America terminated the convertibility of the U.S. dollar to gold.

The appeal of a gold standard is that it arrests control of the issuance of money out of the hands of imperfect human beings. With the physical quantity of gold acting as a limit to issuance, a society can potentially avoid the perils of inflation.

A country that uses the gold standard sets a fixed price for gold and buys and sells gold at that price. That fixed price is used to determine the value of the currency. For example, if the U.S. sets the price of gold at $500 an ounce, the value of the dollar would be 1/500th of an ounce of gold. The gold standard developed a nebulous definition over time but is generally used to describe any commodity-based monetary regime that does not rely on un-backed fiat money, or money that is only valuable because the government forces people to use it. Beyond that, however, there are major differences.

Some gold standards only rely on the actual circulation of physical gold coins and bars, or bullion, but others allow other commodities or paper currencies. Gold has non-monetary uses, especially in jewelry, electronics, and dentistry, so it should always retain a minimum level of real demand.

It is perfectly and evenly divisible without losing value, unlike diamonds, and does not spoil over time. It is impossible to counterfeit perfectly and has a fixed stock—there is only so much gold on Earth, and inflation is limited to the speed of mining. Because of this, Zimbabwe needs to control the speed of mining and control the distribution of gold. Gold has to be made scarce so that its demand will increase. The time of the Makorokoza must be over. We must start respecting our gold so that ZIG will be accepted.

 Brigadier General Augustine Chipwere, the voice of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, solemnly confirmed the incident, his words laden with grief and disbelief.

“In a devastating blow to our ranks, we mourn the loss of Brigadier General Shadreck Vezha, Major Thabani Ncube, Major Mqondisi Gumbo, and Sergeant Chakabaiwa, who tragically perished in a fatal road accident on April 16, 2024,” Brigadier General Chipwere conveyed in an official statement broadcast through state media.

Preliminary findings suggest Brigadier General Vezha’s ill-fated attempt to overtake an unidentified vehicle led to a collision with another car, resulting in multiple casualties.

Chinese Businessman Kidnapped In Harare

By Crime and Courts, Reporter-Elleven Men have been arrested and appeared in court for kidnapping a Chinese business person in Harare.

The suspects also demanded a US$ 120,000 ransom from the Chinese businessman’s relatives.

Guo Zairen (34), Wang Gao (40), Primrose Miga (34), Charles Matondo (46), Tonderai Naison Kaja (34), Charles Notice (34), Christopher Chirombe (34), O’brian Miti (31), Simbarashe Kumba (24), Carlington Konselia (28) and Oswel Tinotenda Tsikai (29), were facing kidnapping charges when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Dennis Mangosi.

The State opposed bail, arguing the suspects could flee the court’s jurisdiction.

Investigating officer Detective Gentle Tapererwa said the 11 were not proper candidates for bail.

“Some of the accused persons exhibited signs that they are capable of fleeing if freed since they tried to escape from police officers,” he said.

Mr Mangosi deferred the matter to Monday for bail ruling.

The court heard that on April 17 at around 3pm, the suspects hatched a plan to kidnap the complainant and demand a ransom.

Acting in common purpose, five of the suspects and Tendai Notice, who is still at large, went to a Chinese restaurant in Belgravia driving a white Toyota Fortuner whose registration numbers are unknown, but was being driven by Guo.

They also had a Toyota Belta, whose registration number is also unknown, but was being driven by Tendai Notice.

The complainant, Cheng Song, was at the restaurant having lunch with his friend, Tu Muqing. Guo and Wang allegedly showed Kaja, Chirombe and Miti, the complainant who in-turn confronted him and introduced themselves as police officers.

The suspects then claimed that Cheng was under arrest, but did not notify him of his offence.

The court heard that the suspects handcuffed him and forced him into their Toyota Belta and drove away, leaving Tu Muqing behind.

The suspects took Cheng to House Number 1, Montenes Drive, Mandara, Harare, where Miga, Matondo, Kumba, Konselia and Tsikai were waiting for them.

Tu Muqing then phoned and informed Cheng’s cousin sister, Wang Yanan, that Cheng had been arrested by police officers.

Cheng sent his Google maps location to Wang Yanan, through a Chinese WeChat internet platform, seeking assistance from her.

Wang Yanan contacted Superintendent Victor Phiri of the Zimbabwe Republic Police and sought assistance to be escorted to the said police station.

It is alleged that Supt Phiri met with Wang Yanan and on checking the Google maps location, he discovered that it was showing a place in a bushy area adjacent to Chikurubi Maximum Prison and that there were no police stations closeby.

At that moment, Wang Yanan received a phone call on her WeChat platform from Cheng who told her that he was being held hostage by the suspects and that they were prohibiting him from using ordinary voice calls or the WhatsApp platform.

Cheng further told her that the suspects were demanding a ransom of US$120 000, which was to be delivered to them promptly to ensure he was not going to be harmed by them, and eventually be deported.

It is alleged that after about 15 minutes, the suspects used Cheng’s cell phone and contacted Wang Yanan and ordered her to drive to the Google maps location.

Supt Phiri alerted CID Homicide Harare of the kidnapping and extortion and they swiftly reacted and waylaid the suspects at the given Google maps location.

Charles Notice, Chirombe, Konselia and Tsikai arrived driving a Toyota Fortuner, registration number AEN 4346, and ordered Wang Yanan to follow their vehicle and they drove off at high speed.

Police detectives followed the suspects’ vehicle and drove along Arcturus Road, Greendale, and identified themselves as police detectives, before ordering them to pullover.

It is the State’s case that the suspects increased the speed of their vehicle in an effort to evade arrest, prompting police officers to fire warning shots, but they continued driving at high speed.

This resulted in the police officers firing towards the vehicle, leading to the driver losing control and plunging into a ditch. They were then arrested.

The court heard that the suspects led the police to House Number 1, Montenes Drive in Mandara where they found Cheng being guarded by some of the suspects.

He was then rescued by the police.

Shumba pushes for united opposition to engage Zanu PF

In a statement Shumba said opposition parties need to come together and approach the ruling party.

“We were happy that all opposition parties came and attend the independence celebrations addressed by His Excellency President Mnangagwa. This spirit must continue, we are all Zimbabweans we need to work together. We are not enemies we all want to see Zimbabwe prosper. Politics of denigrating national leaders is over.

“In the same spirit we are pushing for all opposition parties to unite and make sure that we help the government with one hand. There is need for mutual respect in opposition and no need for big brother mentality. We as opposition through unity Zanu PF will respect our voice, the ruling party cannot take disintegrated opposition seriously. We all need to respect that President Mnangagwa won the election and we engage him respectfully” Shumba said

Recently Shumba appealed to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to call for an urgent Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) meeting in order to address the current economic challenges.

In a statement recently Shumba said other political party leaders must play a crucial role in addressing the economic challenges.

“I call upon President ED Mnangagwa to urgently consider calling back POLAD to share advises in tackling the economic challenges currently facing the country especially the runaway inflation, price instability and exchange rate volatility.

“While we applaud the appointment of the new reserve bank governor in accordance with the RBZ Act, we think the burden should not only be shouldered on him but should be spread to other political and economic players to urgently bring economic stability and help to achieve Vision 2030.
He added that with Polad is ready to put hands on the deck in a bid to help President Mnangagwa.

“POLAD is a tried and tested Institution which has proved itself during it’s engagement with the government between 2019 and 2022 where the economy was fairly stable as compared to the current situation where POLAD is no longer sharing political and economic notes with the government.

“There is danger of having the inflation running out of control if there is no broader engagement with all stakeholders. POLAD has proved itself despite unjustified criticism from the western sponsored political parties and it should be given another chance before the economy run out of control.”

Speaking after announcing his new cabinet last year, Mnangagwa said Polad remains a useful platform.

“The Polad platform was extremely useful, it was a platform where other political parties who participated in the 2018 general elections did not make it and through the Polad platform we were able to interact and exchange views across the board, on the entire framework of Government, and we were able to discuss without limitation.

“I thought it was a very good platform for Zimbabweans to come together and share. I think this platform will continue so that all the political parties that contested will come on board and we will continue the practice, it was very helpful from my point of view as President,” Mnangagwa said.

Beware Of This Fake Vehicle Rent-to-Buy Scheme

A WELL-CALCULATED fake rent-to-buy vehicle scheme has rocked Zimbabwe with unsuspecting individuals wishing to drive personal cars falling prey to scammers over the past few months.

Police are yet to apprehend the fraudsters that are believed to be resident either in Beitbridge, Musina or Harare.

They use different mobile phone numbers to make good their plans and defraud unsuspecting individuals eager to buy cars.

They promise individuals the opportunity to own a car at zero deposit, but ask for administration fees and fuel for delivery of the vehicles in total ranging between between US$250 to US$300.

Rarely do they charge above US$300 unless an individual opts for a truck or minibus which have higher administration charges and fuel costs.

They carefully phrase the advertisement of their fraudulent schemes on social media like WhatsApp groups, Facebook and other informal outlets, an investigation by NewsDay established.

Dozens of people have fallen for the trick, some from as far afield as Australia who wished to buy cars for loved ones back home in Zimbabwe.

One typical advertisement flighted on social media reads: “SBT MOTORS ZIMBABWE* *_car dealership_* *Rent to Buy A Car.* It is buying a car on credit with zero deposit and start paying for it after 30 days while using it for 18 months (instalments).

“Rent to buy is for everyone who is willing to drive a car of his/her choice and make money with it. We also give discounts to all those who do cash and drive (paying cash).

“After your details and particulars have been approved and you are satisfied with the vehicle you want to rent you have to pay administration fee and transportation of US$310.

“You will pay for the vehicle monthly instalments for 18 months while using the vehicle. You pay after 30 days, 3 days before or 3 days after.”

The advert added: “As the vehicle still belongs to SBT Motors, we process the number plates for, we are responsible for tax and insurance (mutero tisu tinobhadhara).

“If you fail to pay for 3 months (90 days) the vehicle will be retrieved from you. Admin fee and transportation free to be paid before you get your vehicle, which is to be deposited/Zipit to our FBC account using the prevailing rate.”

Other scammers have names like Valiant Motors, Beitbridge Car Rentals and Sales just to name a few.

Their advertisements are convincing although careful readers notice several mistakes unlikely to be made by businesses of that magnitude.

An investigator said the scammers could be using modern applications on the mobile phones to select potential victims.

“For instance when you use a number from a certain mobile phone operator you can be able to verify the names if you purport to send money through mobile phone transfers. They can check your details and even go to LinkedIn or True Caller to verify,” the investigator said.

“In some cases they may even be using search engines like Google where some names appear easily.”

An attempt to use the application by this reporter failed when they demanded an identity card matching the name used.

A Beitbridge resident who made an attempt said their responses were calculated.

“Once they ignored me and later came back on WhatsApp to say they had been overwhelmed by Zambian clients. They then said they had a few cars left and were waiting for delivery from Japan and the highest bidders would get the little stock left,” he said.

“I failed to raise the required US$400, and when they asked me to deposit US$300, I sensed that it was a scam.”

Beitbridge lawyer with Garikayi and Partners and former magistrate Jabulani Mzinyathi recently took to social media to warn the public about the marauding con artists.

“I have clients in the four corners of the country. Some fell victim to scammers and wanted me to help recover what they lost,” Mzinyathi posted.

“I tried to locate the scammers at the said physical address; there was no such address.

“I then decided to give a blanket warning on social media where I reach out to around four thousand people to spread the message with their followers.”

Vendors who operate along Granite Road in Beitbridge said they had seen several people asking for directions to a car sale.

“Some came from as far as Buhera and spent the day trudging up and down Granite Road until they asked us. Because we have seen so many people asking for the same place we knew they had been duped,” one vendor said.

Although the adverts have come in different names, their wording is almost the same.

Thieves Invade Cemetery, Vandalise 100 Graves

By Municipal Reporter- Suspected thieves Thursday invaded Warren Hills cemetery and vandalised at least 85 graves.

Nearby residents woke up to find the destruction and they have no idea who could have done it. In African culture, the desecration of graves or cemeteries is taboo of the highest order. 

Harare City Council spokesperson Stanley Gama confirmed the shocking incident and said investigations were still underway.

“Yes, 85 graves at Warren Hills cemetery were destroyed.

“We don’t know who did that but some few years back the same cemetery was destroyed and it was established that the person who had done  it was mentally challenged.

“So, even in this case, we are suspecting that the person who did this is mentally challenged as well.

“As of now, we have increased security and even brought on board those who are armed, we have also reported the matter to the police.

Zanu PF Big Frustrated As Mnangagwa Eats Uhuru Freebies Alone

ZANU PF bigwigs were left frustrated after the party denied them free fuel and accommodation for this year’s Independence Day celebrations held at Murambinda growth point in Buhera, Manicaland province.

However still enjoyed his full perks as the President.

Traditionally, central committee members of the ruling party have enjoyed various perks during national events including complimentary fuel and accommodation.

NewsDay gleaned a message that was sent to central committee members from the Zanu PF national headquarters through the party’s provincial offices before the  Uhuru celebrations yesterday.

“Central committee members are advised by the national transport department that there won’t be accommodation, fuel or bus fare refunds.

“Those willing to attend national events shall take advantage of the buses allocated to the province. Liaise with local district co-ordinators for pick-up points and routes,” the message read.

However, Zanu PF director for information Farai Marapira said there might have been a “glitch” for the bigwigs not to get fuel and accommodation.

“The party has always looked after its leadership. As with any programme a glitch may be here and there but not failure. We are not a party that fails its cadres.

“All central committee members and all other members are catered for professionally and fully,” he said.

But sources within the party told NewsDay that the decision was made due to budgetary constraints and the need to prioritise more pressing issues.

Zimbabwe has been grappling with economic challenges, including hyperinflation, unemployment and a severe shortage of foreign currency, which have strained the government’s resources.

While some see it as a necessary step towards fiscal responsibility and accountability, others view it as a betrayal of party loyalists who have supported Zanu PF through thick and thin.

Central committee members who spoke to NewsDay on condition of anonymity said they felt betrayed after working hard for the party to win elections last year.

Zanu PF leaders are known for lavish lifestyles, while the majority of the populace wallow in poverty.

A central committee report to the 7th Zanu PF National People’s Conference last year showed that the ruling party splurged millions of United States dollars on cars, party regalia and improving the welfare for its leaders.

The report stated that in 2017, before the late former President Robert Mugabe was removed from power, the party only had 45 vehicles.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has boosted the fleet to 531 — the largest in Zanu PF’s history.

The central committee report also revealed that the ruling party spent ZWL$1,8 billion and over US$4,8 million from January to September last year on staff salaries, gratuities, transport, health and allowances for party bigwigs among other expenses.

“In 2018, the Zanu PF party acquired an additional 438 new motor vehicles bringing the fleet size to 486,” the report read.

However, Zanu PF chief whip Pupurai Togarepi revealed that legislators were sleeping in cars because of lack of accommodation when they attend parliamentary business.

“I rise on a point of privilege after some perennial challenges that are facing Members of Parliament each time they come to the House. There is a challenge in terms of accommodation. MPs get desperate to a point where some sleep in cars and others are disturbed by the approach of some of the hotels,” he said.

Former Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa has mocked his colleagues who attended the 44th independence celebrations labelling them bubblegums which will be used and dumped.

In a cryptic message shared on X, Chamisa urged people not be like a bubblegum which is discarded after losing temporary taste.

Man Makes Mnangagwa-Jump in Kwekwe

KWEKWE – A man is dead after falling from the rooftop of the First Mutual building in Kwekwe city centre on Friday morning. The incident caused a temporary halt to business activity in the Midlands province town.

The unidentified shirtless man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are investigating whether he intended to take his own life or if it was a tragic accident.

According to witnesses, the man was seen performing stunts on the rooftop, resembling those of the superhero Spiderman. A video circulating on social media shows him precariously clinging to the edge with one hand.

The situation turned fatal when he attempted to jump to a balcony on the third floor. He missed his target and fell, dying on impact with the ground.

The cause of the man’s actions remains unclear. Some speculate mental health issues may have played a role, while others suspect drug or substance abuse. This is not the first such incident in Zimbabwe. Last year, a middle-aged Caucasian man believed to be a hotel guest died after jumping from a room in Harare.

USD66,000 Stolen

Robbery Spree in Harare Results in Over $66,000 Stolen from Local Businesses

Two companies fell victim to brutal robberies that cumulatively resulted in a staggering loss of over US$66,000 and R71,000. The incidents involved a total of 12 armed assailants who executed their crimes with chilling precision earlier this week.

According to Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the National Police spokesperson, one of the robberies took place at a business situated along Seke Road. “This was a highly orchestrated attack. The robbers, armed with pistols, assaulted the security guard on duty, incapacitated the building’s security systems, and forcibly entered the premises,” Nyathi reported. The assailants made off with US$56,377 and R71,000, alongside other valuables including a laptop and a Samsung tablet.

A mere three days later, a second heist occurred at a wholesale outlet in Chitungwiza. “Another group of six perpetrators, also armed and using explosives, breached a safe at the wholesale, extracting US$10,507,” explained Nyathi. These crimes highlight a disturbing trend of increasing violence and sophistication among criminal gangs in the area.

The Harare police are urgently requesting information from the public to aid in their investigation. “We are dealing with a highly organized criminal network, evidenced by the use of firearms and explosives. Community cooperation is crucial in apprehending these criminals,” Nyathi emphasized.

Mavaza: Mutsvangwa Never Said Food Aid Is Only for ZANU PF

One of the most despicable tactics our rulers will use in war and imperialist manoeuvres is to deny basic food supplies to their enemies. There has been an outcry against Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa’s press conference where he was accused of allegedly stating that ZANU PF members will not starve. Mutsvangwa, Zanu PF Secretary for Information and Publicity, has said the ruling party will superintend the distribution of food aid in Zimbabwe. Mutsvangwa was speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, on Monday, 15 April 2024. This comes after the President of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa, declared a national disaster with Zimbabwe becoming the third Southern African country to make the declaration, joining Zambia and Malawi. In Zimbabwe, over 2.7 million people need food aid and the country has a grain deficit of 680,000 metric tonnes.

It goes without saying that Zimbabwe is blessed with plenty of rumour mongers masquerading as opposition politicians who twist every word said. It is not a secret that Mutsvangwa is a ZANU PF spokesperson and thus he speaks for ZANU PF. He did not claim for a second that he was speaking on behalf of the government but for ZANU PF.

It is a fact that food has become one of the most important political questions addressed by many political parties worldwide. The lack of access to sufficient quantities of food to satisfy minimum human needs, referred to as food poverty, the quality of the food we consume and its impact on our health, referred to as food safety, and the control of the world’s food resources, known as food security, have all been the focus of attention for many within the growing political platforms. The UN General Assembly stated in 2000 its ‘collective responsibility to uphold the principles of human dignity, equality, and equity at the global level’ and established a series of ‘millennium goals’ to be achieved. These included, in the goal of the eradication of extreme hunger, a target of reducing by half the numbers of malnourished people in the world. Yet the UN itself admits that more than 40 countries are not on track to achieve this goal. The extent of food deprivation and threat of famine caused by the debilitating drought can be gauged by the fact that overall 80 percent of the Zimbabwean population will need food aid. A further measure of extreme starvation will come from the number of people living in rural areas. Even among those in the urban areas with supposedly ‘adequate’ levels of nutrition, the food shortage will indeed visit them. Poor diet, alcohol consumption, and sedentary lifestyles will contribute to many deaths if food is not distributed.

Bearing in mind the shortages looming, Cde Mutsvangwa said, “We have said the system of governance is being tweaked, we also are going to use our party (to distribute food aid). The whole political structure of the party is being told that’s why we had a central committee meeting yesterday (Sunday) to go and be on the lookout so that we superintend these systems by providing information to the central government about any areas where there may be deficits or where there may be discrepancies from our governance system. The government bureaucracy beware that the party will be superintending people at village level to make sure that people don’t starve.” Mutsvangwa added that Zanu PF will ensure everyone receives food aid regardless of political affiliation as “Zanu PF is a party that loves everyone in Zimbabwe”.

In previous years, Zanu PF has been accused of hijacking food aid distribution in rural areas, sidelining opposition members and supporters. It is surprising that opposition activists and opposition lawyers were on the overdrive accusing ZANU PF of planning to feed ZANU PF members only. “It’s not Zanu PF that will be giving food, no, I told you the people that will be giving food is the government, people who work as extension officers coming from the ministry of agriculture, people of health and those of social welfare. The government is different from Zanu PF on our side is to check if members of Zanu PF are all fed as a party that loves its people.” This the phrase which has been highly misinterpreted by the opposition. Unfortunately, the West only hears what they want to hear.

Being that as it may, Cde Mutsvangwa had no duty to assure opposition members of priority in receiving food. Mutsvangwa represents ZANU PF and he had to oversee the welfare of the members of his party. In fact, Cde Mutsvangwa was very clear when he said “So on the issue of food there are no outcasts, there are no enemies of politics, we are one people”, he said. The government is going to be distributing 7 kilograms of food aid per individual. Added Mutsvangwa, “We previously focused on household; this time we have gone further down on the ladder we are focusing on individuals. Calculations have been done. We need about 7 kilograms of food per month per individual to survive. We will make sure that is available, and as months come later a bigger requirement will raise that level of food production and this will be at the individual level not the household level. We want to make sure that no one in the village, nobody in the ward goes hungry”. The Government will also chip in irrigation crops to help as winter approaches.”

Cde Mutsvangwa was fully aware that we live in a world in which, as with the oil or armaments industries, a few firms dominate the world’s food market. So Cde Mutsvangwa also provided the ideological explanation of what is now happening to our food. The fact that ZANU PF will oversee the distribution of the food does not mean ZANU PF was monopolising food distribution. The allegations against Mutsvangwa are mischievous, vague and totally untrue. International food policy has been dominated by three interrelated needs: the protection of big business interests and markets in the developed world; the securing of access to raw, unprocessed food products from developing countries; and the securing of access into developing countries’ markets for processed exports from the developed world. By thrusting ZANU PF in the things Mutsvangwa seeks to achieve clarity and transparency by one look at the structure of the food industry explains why this is so. For well over 30 years the world food industry has been dominated by the needs of multinational firms, especially those of the US and Britain.

ZANU PF understands the needs of its people and thus Cde Mutsvangwa mentions that ZANU PF will oversee the distribution. Zimbabwean authorities do not discriminate against perceived political opponents by denying them access to food programs, International relief agencies in Zimbabwe had always ensured that access to food is based on need alone and is not biased by domestic or international political concerns. The report of widespread politicization of the government’s subsidized grain program, managed by the Grain Marketing Board, as well as the far less extensive manipulation of international food aid is a figment of the opposition’s imagination. Food distribution has not started yet so how then could anybody possibly believe that there is bias before the distribution started. The government authorities and party officials of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) had never and do not manipulate the supply and distribution of government-subsidized grain and the registration of recipients for international food aid. International aid agencies had always devoted greater resources and attention to preventing the manipulation of recipient lists.

It is a shame that we have people who continue to demonize their country. ZANU PF will feed every Zimbabwean and will naturally make sure its members are well fed then others will not die of hunger.

Zimbabwe, a nation endowed with some of the world’s most valuable minerals, struggles economically and fails to stabilize its local currency. Explaining why such a wealthy country faces the highest inflation levels is complex, yet many economists are developing models as potential solutions to the Zimbabwean crisis. However, it is crucial to examine how the Zimbabwean economy is structured before analyzing these potential solutions. Following a deteriorating relationship with its former colonial masters, Britain, a significant portion of the general population became unemployed, leading to widespread suffering.

The government responded by introducing black empowerment laws and encouraging people to create their own jobs. Support for these initiatives was minimal, resulting in formal employment remaining a significant challenge for the government to address. Today, statistics indicate that 90% of Zimbabwe’s working population is not formally employed—a fact often overlooked when discussing employment figures.

The challenges Zimbabwe faces stem from having a working population that is informally employed. Since 2000, Zimbabwe has been cultivating a new culture of business and economic affairs. The government is now struggling to control an economy that has transitioned from formal to informal. It is unfortunate that the government is attempting to manage this informal generation through formal methods. Some politicians attribute the situation to a political crisis that has led to a leadership crisis.

However, this is a simplistic view as changing political leadership does not automatically ensure economic stability and growth—these are distinct issues. To understand the informal economy better, here are its characteristics:
– The majority of the working class is informally employed.
– Businesses are not registered.
– They have individual rather than corporate goals.
– Businesses primarily engage in buying and selling with minimal production or manufacturing.
– Most products are imported.
– Profit margins and prices are not stable but fluctuate frequently.
– Businesses lack proper bookkeeping and accounting.
– Typically, the business owner is also the employee.
– No contributions are made to pension funds.
– Businesses do not submit income tax.
– There is no insurance for businesses.
– Businesses lack collateral security for borrowing from formal banks.
– There is little to no government financial assistance.
– Skills and business management knowledge are limited.
– Forex markets are controlled independently and individually.

These issues indicate that for the economy to function normally, an informal system of control must be established. Zimbabwe’s politicians will not be able to restore the local currency unless they engage with the informal sector. There is an ongoing conflict between the government, which aims to formerly address the economy, and the informal institutions that have established businesses independently of government aid.

Here are brief suggestions on how Zimbabwe’s economy might be restored:
– The government should collaborate with money changers to find common ground for national benefit. Recruiting key figures from this sector to work for the Central Bank might seem unconventional.
– The government should also support entrepreneurs and small businesses by helping to formalize them.
– Establish regulated institutions to oversee pricing and profit margins, which should include members from both the informal sector and government officials.

It is crucial for the Government of Zimbabwe to recognize that the informal sector, which encompasses 90% of business activities in Zimbabwe, now controls more economic activities than the government itself. These businesses include vendors of airtime, Zesa tokens, and various other local enterprises.

When the government and city councils increase fees for operating licenses, they are challenging the masses who invested their hard-earned money into now-vacant offices after many white-owned companies withdrew from Zimbabwe. High rental charges by foreign and government building owners, coupled with government silence, raise questions about the support for indigenization. The recent law that restricts architectural design of commercial buildings to a few registered architects stifles competition and innovation.

500 Harare CBD Buildings Face Murambatsvina 

By Municipal Correspondent- The Harare City Council has condemned more than 500 buildings, including about 14 high-rise towers in and around Harare’s central business district (CBD), classifying them as unsafe for occupation.

The city fathers said these properties have poor ventilation, lack emergency exits, and generally decay.

Over 500 abatement orders have since been issued to owners of the buildings, directing them to repair their properties or risk their closure urgently.

An abatement order is a legal document issued by a Government agency or authorised body to address a building nuisance or violation of regulations.

100 Warren Hills Graves Vandalised 

By Municipal Reporter- The Harare City Council has confirmed the vandalisation of at least 85 graves at Warren Hills cemetery, Thursday.

Nearby residents woke up to find the destruction and they have no idea who could have done it. In African culture, the desecration of graves or cemeteries is taboo of the highest order. 

Council spokesperson Stanley Gama said investigations were still underway.

“Yes, 85 graves at Warren Hills cemetery were destroyed.

“We don’t know who did that but some few years back the same cemetery was destroyed and it was established that the person who had done  it was mentally challenged.

“So, even in this case, we are suspecting that the person who did this is mentally challenged as well.

“As of now, we have increased security and even brought on board those who are armed, we have also reported the matter to the police.

Three Perish In Kadoma Horror Crash

By Crime and Courts Reporter- The Zimbabwe Republic Police has announced the death of three from an accident involving a Ford Ranger twin cab in Kadoma on Thursday.

In a statement, Police said the accident occurred at the 166-kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road around 11 AM on Independence Day. The ZRP said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 166-kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on 18/04/24 at around 1100 hours in which three people were killed whilst one person was injured.

A Ford Ranger twin cab with three passengers on board veered off the road before overturning and landing on its wheels.

The bodies of the victims were taken to Kadoma General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured is admitted at the same hospital.

An average of five people die on Zimbabwean roads every day through road traffic accidents which happen every 15 minutes.

This was said by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) Chief Executive Officer, Munesu Munodawafa when he recently appeared before parliament’s portfolio committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development.

He also said on average, 38 people are injured in accidents daily.

The economics of ZiG is not rocket science – anyone with basic understanding of the currency crisis in ZIM certainly knows that ZiG will fail. We know the reasons which led to currencies in Zimbabwe. The conditions haven’t changed (read my post without emotions). This is why we repeatedly say that ZiG will fail. One hopes that in the process GOZ will relook at our recommendations but alas they are sending Police after money changers. Police has no capacity to stop black market because currency trading is big business for the informal sector which is home to over 7 million people. Do you think that

However, a message dispatched from the party’s national headquarters through provincial offices dashed these expectations. 

It stated that there would be no provision for accommodation, fuel, or bus fare refunds.

The directive urged attendees to utilise allocated buses, coordinating with local district coordinators for pick-up points and routes.

 While party insiders attributed the decision to budget constraints and prioritisation of urgent matters, some officials perceived it as a betrayal, given their contributions to the party’s electoral success last year.

Farai Marapira, ZANU PF’s director for information, attempted to downplay the situation, suggesting a mere “glitch” in the process. He asserted the party’s historical commitment to catering to its leadership, claiming that central committee members and all others are attended to “professionally and fully.”

However, discontent among party members simmered, exacerbated by reports of extravagant spending by ZANU PF leaders while the party’s grassroots supporters struggle in poverty. A report presented at the 7th ZANU PF National People’s Conference in 2023 highlighted a stark contrast, revealing a significant increase in the party’s vehicle fleet from 45 to 531 since 2017.

Helicopter Accident Kills Defence Forces Chief of Kenya, 9 Others

Nairobi, Kenya – By A Correspondent | A devastating helicopter crash in Elgeyo Marakwet County has resulted in the death of General Francis Omondi Ogolla, the Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, President William Ruto announced today. Govt Says Don’t Eat GMO Grain

The National Biotechnology Authority (NBA) has issued a stern warning against the unauthorized importation and handling of genetically modified (GMO) grain, as Zimbabwe grapples with severe drought conditions. NBA’s CEO and registrar, Dr. Deckstar Savadye, emphasized the country’s position as a non-GM producer and outlined the regulatory framework guiding the importation of GMO products.

“In light of the current drought, exacerbated by El Niño, it’s crucial that all importers and handlers of GM grain comply with the statutory regulations to prevent biosecurity risks,” Dr. Savadye stated. He referenced Statutory Instrument (SI) 157 of 2018, which mandates registration with the NBA and possession of a biosafety import permit for all GM grain importers.

The recent government measures to mitigate food scarcity include allowing duty-free imports of maize, rice, and cooking oil starting July 2024. This decision follows the approval of duty waivers on rice and potato seed imports and the use of genetically modified maize strictly for stock feed production.

Detailed Court Report: Grave Allegations of Violence Surface in Fort Rixon Assault Case.

Two alleged illegal miners, Sibanengi Ncube, 21, and Julius Maromo, 40, have been remanded in custody following their appearance in Bulawayo’s regional court, where they faced serious charges of attempted murder. The accusations stem from a brutal incident involving local mine owner Listen Rusimba in the small community of Fort Rixon, Matabeleland South Province.

The court proceedings unveiled a horrifying account of the alleged attack. Rusimba, who was gravely injured in the ordeal, appeared before the magistrate, Dambudzo Malunga, using crutches. He narrated that Ncube and Maromo, who are known in the area for their illicit mining activities and sideline business of selling game meat, assaulted him savagely. The incident, he claims, resulted in the amputation of his leg and the loss of 19 teeth.

According to Rusimba, the conflict began over a trivial sum of money — just US$10 worth of game meat bought on credit. This seemingly minor transaction spiraled into a catastrophic event a few days later when he encountered the accused at a local shop. Rusimba alleged that after he questioned them about deceitfully obtaining money left by his son, they dragged him outside, subjected him to a brutal beating, and then gruesomely chopped off his leg with a machete.

Rusimba’s testimony included further harrowing details, stating that in a desperate attempt to fend off his attackers, he fired a shot into the air, which only escalated the violence. He described being struck on the head with a knobkerrie, resulting in long-term health complications such as depression and a stomach tumor. As he lay incapacitated, Rusimba claimed, the attackers not only continued their physical assault but also unleashed dogs on him, adding to his severe injuries.

Maromo’s defense painted a contrasting picture, suggesting that it was Rusimba who instigated the altercation by insulting him, leading to an argument that got out of hand. Maromo claimed his innocence, stating he was unable to identify any assailants other than asserting that he and Ncube were unfairly accused.

This brutal incident has not only left Rusimba with deep physical scars but has also had a profound impact on his family and livelihood. His children have reportedly fled their home out of fear for their safety, and the local community is described as living in fear of further violence, reluctant to interact or support Rusimba due to fear of retaliation by the accused.

It is the eve of the country’s Independence Day celebrations and thousands of students from across the country converged at Murambinda B Primary School in Buhera this Wednesday for the children’s party.

Addressing the gathering, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said citizens should embrace the values of the country’s liberators.

“We should embrace the values of our liberation, by always respecting and loving one another. Your language, culture and traditions might be different but you are all Zimbabweans. You are great, great-grandchildren of Munhumutapa, we are a united people. We fought for our Independence and freedom from colonial rule, now we are a free people. You, our children, must always be proud of being Zimbabwean, our rich history and national identity. You, our boys and girls, will tomorrow ensure that our country reaches greater heights. The extraordinary talents together with the education you are getting are set to give you many career paths to choose from, for successful lives.

“The Government as well as parents and teachers are here for you so that you will grow up to be patriotic and disciplined adults who can transform Zimbabwe into a modern and developed country. I want you to also grow up and become people who are aware of the wealth of our country, land, minerals and environment. These resources must be always used to develop our communities and the country as a whole. You must defend and protect this wealth. I want you our children to know that long-lasting development will only be achieved when you live peacefully with each other, you must also have good character and always respect your elders. These are the values that will protect the independence and freedom we are celebrating today,” he said.

President Mnangagwa also emphasised the need to adopt science and technology in schools.

He added, “The National Development Strategy recognises the role of education towards lifting many out of poverty into prosperity. Education is also a tool to develop skilled workers for the growth of our nation. The government has committed to providing education that paves the way for a brighter future for all of you. Our education system is focusing on Science, Technology, and Innovation, starting from Early Childhood Development. We are transforming and establishing Science Laboratories across primary and secondary schools. This will promote the learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In addition, we are rolling out mobile science laboratories and equipping our schools with centres for Information Communication Technologies.”

He also urged school authorities to create a safe environment for children to shun drug and substance abuse.

“In line with the Global Safe to Learn Commitments, comprehensive programmes are in place to make sure that all our learning institutions remain safe for both pupils and staff. These include safeguards for early reporting and response to all cases of bullying and the abuse of harmful drugs and substances. I call upon school authorities to diligently carry out their duties and create safe and healthy spaces for our children. Similarly, I encourage you our young people to be responsible at your schools, homes and within the community in general.

“You must always listen and accept the guidance of your parents, teachers and those senior to you. Engaging in harmful activities such as drug and substance abuse as well as the irresponsible use of ICTs, destroys the moral fabric of our country. You should use social media, content creation and ICTs for good not to spread bad behaviour. Instead, focus on building a bright future for yourselves, your families and our nation, with education as a stepping stone. Going forward, our national strategies will continue to focus on educating pupils and fostering a positive school environment as well as providing psycho-social support to have well-rounded children in all our communities,” said the President.

The Independence Children’s party was punctuated by entertainment from various schools, while students had an opportunity to interact with the leadership.

Zimbabwe is celebrating its independence under the theme: Zim @44: Unity, Peace and Development towards Visions 2030,’ hence the emphasis by President Mnangagwa on the need to uphold peace.

Mohadi Painfully Speaks On Independence Celebrations

VICE President Kembo Mohadi has implored the nation to unite in preserving the gains of the liberation struggle.

He was speaking at Dzapasi Assembly Point in Buhera where he led proceedings at the lighting of the Independence Flame, a symbol of colonial resistance.

In 1980, Dzapasi Assembly Point witnessed one of the key moments in the country’s history when over 17 000 freedom fighters converged after ceasefire.

Vice President Kembo Mohadi was at the site this Wednesday during the lighting of the Independence Flame, where he chronicled the significance of the site and implored the nation to safeguard the gains of the liberation struggle.

“This monument thus embodies the aspirations of every Zimbabwean for peace and commitment to resolving conflicts through peaceful means, fostering understanding and nurturing a culture of reconciliation. The monument is a symbol for our collective determination to build a better Zimbabwe for ourselves and future generations. Dzapasi Assembly Point Monument inculcates in every Zimbabwean the values of tolerance, inclusivity and respect for human rights.

“With the development impetus that has been brought in by the 44th independence commemorations, it is my sincere hope that National Museums and Monuments will cease on the opportunity to make this monument a tourist attraction for all, packaged together with other attractions such as Matendera and Kagumbudzi national Monuments, Ruti Dam and balancing rocks of Marabada hills here in Manicaland. Because of its centrality Dzapasi National Monument has the potential to attract tourists from all sectors of society and should be marketed as a place of peace,” he said.

The Minister of War Veterans of the Liberation Struggle, Senator Monica Mavhunga and her Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage counterpart, Honourable Kazembe Kazembe reaffirmed government’s commitment to preserving the country’s historical sites as well as improving the welfare of freedom fighters.

“I want to take this moment to acknowledge His Excellency, The President Dr E. D Mnangagwa, under whose visionary leadership of the Second Republic, we have all recognized the importance of honouring our Veterans of the Liberation Struggle. The establishment of a whole Ministry mandated to oversee the welfare and economic empowerment of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle, is a testament to his unwavering support for those who fought for our independence.

“His Excellency the President has initiated this important process of accurately recording and preserving the legacy and history of the War of Liberation. It is through his devolution initiative that we are witnessing the rotational Independence celebrations across Provinces, hence the lighting of the Independence Flame today at this historic site,” she said.

Hon Kazembe said, “This monument thus embodies the aspirations of every Zimbabwean for a peaceful co-existence and commitment to resolving conflicts through peaceful means, fostering understanding and nurturing a culture of reconciliation. To this end, My Ministry shall strive to ensure that the department of National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe is adequately supported to carry out its mandate of research, conservation, presentation and preservation of liberation heritage.”

The event was also an opportunity for the war veterans to reminisce on the past.

“This is a place where we converged after the ceasefire, so we are grateful to have met and revived the old memories,” said one of the war veterans.

Another added, “We feel honoured as war veterans. This event signifies that the government is recognising the role we played in the attainment of this country’s independence.”

The Independence Flame was received by the Manicaland Provincial leadership last week on Friday and was taken to all the districts ahead of the national Uhuru celebrations this Thursday at Murambinda in Buhera.

44 years ago today, a new DAWN was witnessed when ZIMBABWE unshackled itself from being identified as RHODESIA and the century old British Union Jack was lowered and replaced by a NATIONAL FLAG that reflected the Zimbabwean people, its diversity and culture. The raising of the Zimbabwean flag represented the birth of AFRICA’S bread basket and a JEWEL of peace and prosperity.

44 years later, we fondly remember and pay our GREATEST TRIBUTE to the selfless HEROES and HEROINES who sacrificed their lives so that we enjoy the FREEDOMS we celebrate today.

RBZ Governor Disowns ZiG As It Collapses 

By Business Reporter- The newly appointed Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor John Mushayavanhu has distanced himself from adopting the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency.

 The currency, which saw a rapid decline in value just a week after its introduction, has raised concerns among economic circles.

Addressing business leaders at a meeting organized by the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) in Gweru, Mushayavanhu attributed the creation of ZiG to economic stakeholders such as the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) and others.

He clarified that consultations regarding the new Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) had been extensive and inclusive.

 Mushayavanhu emphasized the independence of the Central Bank’s operations, highlighting that the RBZ operates autonomously, as outlined in the RBZ Act.

Furthermore, Mushayavanhu emphasized the goal of stability and acceptability for the new currency. 

He intended to create a currency that would be resilient against rapid depreciation, fostering user confidence and encouraging savings and investment.

The ZiG currency was launched on April 5, 2024, aiming to replace the Zimbabwe dollar, which had suffered from severe inflation, trading at exorbitant rates against the US dollar on interbank and parallel markets.

 However, the ZiG’s value plummeted shortly after its introduction, prompting scrutiny and concern within Zimbabwe’s economic landscape.

The proximity of Battlefields to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Precabe Farm in Sherwood, near Kwekwe, casts a sombre shadow over the incident, raising unsettling questions about its timing and circumstances.

In a statement, Minister Muchinguri-Kashiri expressed profound sorrow at the loss of lives, particularly during a time when the nation was poised to commemorate its 44th anniversary of Independence.

“I have learned with shock and sadness the tragic death of four members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and the injury of four others in a road traffic accident near Kwekwe along the Harare-Bulawayo highway on April 16, 2024,” she lamented.
“While the nation is preparing to celebrate 44 years of independence, your People’s Force mourns with a heavy heart and deep sorrow,” she added, emphasising the shared grief with President Mnangagwa, the affected families, and the nation at large.

Chiwenga Suffers Another Blow

By Political Reporter – Doubts loom large over Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s grip on military power and his prospects of ascending to the presidency as a string of assassinations and purges decimate his closest allies.

The recent targeted killings have sent shockwaves through Zimbabwe, particularly among those who vividly recall Chiwenga’s pivotal role in the ousting of the late President Robert Mugabe in November 2017.

During that tumultuous time, Chiwenga was the bold orchestrator of a historic coup, ushering in a new era of political uncertainty.

Among the slain military stalwarts are the esteemed figures of Sibusiso Moyo and Perence Shiri, whose deaths remain shrouded in mystery.

These were men who stood shoulder to shoulder with Chiwenga during the zenith of his power, only to meet their untimely demise under suspicious circumstances.

There had been a tacit agreement in the corridors of power within Zanu PF: Mnangagwa would serve one term, paving the way for Chiwenga to assume the presidency.

Yet, Mnangagwa, emboldened by his position, now defiantly proclaims his intent to cling to power well beyond the originally envisaged timeline, stretching his tenure into the unforeseeable future.

A disturbing pattern has emerged since the coup that reshaped Zimbabwe’s political landscape.

High-ranking military officials have met their end in a series of inexplicable road accidents, conveniently eliminating potential challengers to Mnangagwa’s authority.

The most recent tragedy unfolded just outside Battlefields, a stone’s throw from President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s opulent Precabe Farm.

Brigadier General Augustine Chipwere, the voice of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, solemnly confirmed the incident, his words laden with grief and disbelief.

“In a devastating blow to our ranks, we mourn the loss of Brigadier General Shadreck Vezha, Major Thabani Ncube, Major Mqondisi Gumbo, and Sergeant Chakabaiwa, who tragically perished in a fatal road accident on April 16, 2024,” Brigadier General Chipwere conveyed in an official statement broadcast through state media.

The circumstances surrounding the accident raise troubling questions.

Preliminary findings suggest Brigadier General Vezha’s ill-fated attempt to overtake an unidentified vehicle led to a collision with another car, resulting in multiple casualties.

However, scepticism lingers, fueling speculation of foul play orchestrated to maintain Mnangagwa’s stranglehold on power.

Brigadier General Shadreck Vezha, once lauded for his service on the international stage, joins the ranks of other fallen heroes whose valorous deeds have been overshadowed by the sinister shadows of political intrigue.

today marks yet another momentous occasion in the journey of LIBERATION and DEMOCRACY in Zimbabwe. 44 years ago, our former colonial masters bowed down to relentless political and military pressure from a GUERRILLA ARMY comprised of young, energetic, focused and resilient men and women who had an extraordinary COMMITMENT towards the liberation of Zimbabwe and her people.

44 years ago today, a new DAWN was witnessed when ZIMBABWE unshackled itself from being identified as RHODESIA and the century old British Union Jack was lowered and replaced by a NATIONAL FLAG that reflected the Zimbabwean people, its diversity and culture. The raising of the Zimbabwean flag represented the birth of AFRICA’S bread basket and a JEWEL of peace and prosperity.

44 years later, we fondly remember and pay our GREATEST TRIBUTE to the selfless HEROES and HEROINES who sacrificed their lives so that we enjoy the FREEDOMS we celebrate today.

We have become the only African nation that restored the ownership of land to its rightful owners and take much pride in the BOLDNESS of our people in asserting their rights to the land which had been appropriated from our forefathers.

Today I am PROUDLY ZIMBABWEAN on account of our forebears who took a firm stand against white IMPERIALISM and fought for self-rule and DEMOCRACY that we celebrate today.

Under the astute leadership of H.E Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe continues to realize the gains of her independence as witnessed by increased tobacco and mineral exports which have placed the country at the GLOBAL stage of commerce and trade.

With the greatest PRIDE and DELIGHT, I wish to join the nation in celebrating Zimbabwe’s 44th Independence celebrations. I extend my deepest GRATITUDE to the Second Republic for carrying on with the LEGACY of our liberation struggle and inculcating within our YOUTH the values and ideals of our independence.

44 Year Old Zimbabwe Needs Its People

This year, we will celebrate the 44th anniversary of Zimbabwean independence. This day represents not only the creation of a new nation but also the foundation of a new life—one founded on the principles of freedom, self-government, and equality. We have always heard speeches to inspire new vigor for our founding principles. Looking at who and what we were will help us remember who and what we ought to be.

What we were before independence should be considered as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery. We must never indulge in “illusions of hope,” passively waiting “to be betrayed with a kiss,” and falling prey to the siren songs of the West meant to divide us. We should remind ourselves of the lengths we have gone to plead our case against sanctions to the British and the West. We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the sanctions and their imposers. Our petitions have been slighted; our remonstrances have produced additional violence and insult; our supplications have been disregarded; and we have been spurned, with contempt, from the foot of the throne.

This Independence Day, we call to action—a call that would galvanize us as a nation into declaring true independence from Great Britain. Economic independence to declare our wealth as ours and must be enjoyed by us alone.

In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope. If we wish to be free, if we mean to preserve inviolate those inestimable privileges for which we have been so long contending, if we mean not basely to abandon the noble struggle in which we have been so long engaged, and which we have pledged ourselves never to abandon until the glorious object of our contest shall be obtained—we must fight the sanctions and the spirit of division.

It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, “Peace, Peace,” but there is no peace when our people are dying of hunger yet we have the resources. Sanctions do not allow us to sell our resources. The war against sanctions must actually begin now. The next winds that sweep from the West must bring to our ears the noise of victory. Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Independence Day commemoration is a glorious and auspicious occasion for all of us. It’s not only a day to blow festivity in the air. It is a matter of delight as well as pride for us to see how everyone—children, youth, and the elderly, in cities and villages, everywhere in Zimbabwe—is happy to see this day come.

Independence Day celebrations also remind me of my childhood days. We could not contain our excitement about participating in the Independence Day celebrations in our village school. When the Zimbabwean Flag was hoisted, we felt an electrifying energy pass through us. With our hearts full of patriotic pride, we saluted the national flag and sang the national anthem. At that time, it was “Ishe Komborerai Africa.” The patriotic songs were sung, which kept playing in our minds for many days.

When we grow up, we may not remain as expressive of our joy as children are, but I am sure that the intensity of the patriotic feeling associated with the celebration of national festivals is not diminished at all. Independence Day reminds us that we are not merely individuals, but we are part of a great community of people. It happens to be the biggest and the greatest community of its kind.

What we celebrate on Independence Day is the fact that we are part of a great democracy. Each of us has many identities—apart from caste, creed, language, and region, we are also identified with our families and professions—but there is one identity that is above all. That is our identity as citizens of Zimbabwe. We are Zimbabweans regardless of our political affiliation. Each one of us is an equal citizen; each one of us has an equal opportunity, equal rights, and equal duties, in this land.

But long years of colonial rule wiped out our ubuntu.

What is special about our freedom struggle is not only the fact that its objective was achieved, but also how it was fought. Under the leadership of Robert Gabriel Mugabe, Leopold Takawira, Herbert Chitepo, and a galaxy of extraordinary visionary leaders, like ED Mnangagwa, our national movement was animated by

a unique set of ideals. Mugabe, Mnangagwa, and others rekindled the soul of Zimbabwe and helped the nation rediscover its civilizational values.

On this Independence Day, let’s join our fellow citizens in paying grateful tribute to the known and unknown freedom fighters whose sacrifices have made it possible for Zimbabwe to regain its rightful place in the comity of nations. Great women freedom fighters like Mai Mutsvangwa, Ophar Muchinguri Kashiri, Victoria Makoni, the forgotten hero, and many more ladies of valor laid down their lives for the glory of Zimbabwe. Indeed some died in the process, and some are still leading us today, and we owe them our lives.

These ladies, like Joyce Mujuru and many more, set inspiring ideals for all future generations of women, to serve the nation and society with self-confidence. Today, women are contributing extensively in every field of development and service to the country, and are enhancing the nation’s pride. Today our women have made their special place in many fields in which their participation was unimaginable a few decades ago.

We must note that ED has made the economic empowerment of women and given it special focus in our country. Economic empowerment strengthens the position of women in the family and society. ZANU PF urges all fellow citizens to give priority to women’s empowerment. We would like to see our sisters and daughters overcoming challenges with courage and moving ahead in life. Development of women was among the ideals of our freedom struggle. Today is the day which grants us the occasion to reconnect with our history. It is also an occasion to assess our present and reflect about our way forward. Looking at the present, we see that Zimbabwe has not only regained its rightful place on the world stage, but it has also enhanced its standing in the international order.

This is the day which defined us, and we must never take it for granted. It is our independence day. As we celebrate today, let us unite as one and indeed we will overcome. Zimbabwe is the only country we can call ours in the whole world.

Today, as we gather to celebrate our nation’s independence, I stand before you with a heavy heart and a deep sense of sorrow. Our great nation, Zimbabwe, has come a long way since the days of colonial rule, but the reality of our current situation demands that we confront the challenges we face.

When we gained independence from British colonial rule, there was a prevailing sense of hope and optimism. We believed we would build a prosperous nation where every citizen would have equal opportunities, where justice and equality would prevail, and where the dreams of our people would become realities.

However, as the years passed, we have witnessed the erosion of those dreams. Our nation has been plagued by political instability, economic decline, and social unrest. Corruption has seeped into the very fabric of our society, creating a stark divide between the rich and the poor. Our once vibrant and promising economy now struggles under the weight of mismanagement and unsustainable policies. The consequences have been dire: many Zimbabweans live in poverty, struggling to make ends meet and provide for their families. Basic services like healthcare and education have suffered, leaving our citizens vulnerable and without access to the opportunities they deserve. Our young people, the future of our nation, are burdened with limited prospects and a sense of disillusionment.

It is with profound sadness that I acknowledge the pain and suffering many of our citizens endure daily. Our nation, which was meant to be a beacon of hope and progress, has become a shadow of its former self. The dreams and aspirations of our people have been dashed, replaced by a sense of despair and resignation.

But my fellow Zimbabweans, I stand here today not to dwell solely on our sorrows, but to remind us all of the resilience and strength that lies within us. We have overcome great challenges in the past, and we can do so again. It is up to each and every one of us to rise above the difficulties we face and work towards a brighter future. We must hold our leaders accountable for their actions and demand transparency, honesty, and good governance. We must unite as a nation, setting aside our differences and working together towards a common goal. We must invest in our people, providing them with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.

Change will not come overnight, and the road ahead will be long and arduous. But I have faith in the spirit of our people, in their resilience and determination. We can rebuild our nation and restore the dreams that were once so vivid in our hearts. As we commemorate this day of independence, let us remember the sacrifices made by those who fought for our freedom. Let us honor their memory by working tirelessly to create a Zimbabwe that they would be proud of.

May God bless our nation, and may He guide us on the path to a brighter future.

Top Soldiers Die In Horror Crash Near Mnangagwa Farm

By Political Reporter- A Zimbabwe National Army Brigadire, two Majors, and a Sergeant have died in a head-on collision 2 KM from Battlefields near Kwekwe.

Battlefields is less than 20 kilometres from President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Precabe Farm, Sherwood, near Kwekwe.

Brigadier General Augustine Chipwere, the Director of Poly, Public Relations, and International Affairs for the ZDF, confirmed the incident that happened on Tuesday.

In an official statement relayed through state media, Brigadier General Chipwere expressed deep sorrow over the accident. He disclosed that the unfortunate event took place approximately 2km from Battlefields in Mashonaland West Province. He stated:

“With heavy hearts, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces regret to announce the passing of a general officer, two field officers, and a non-commissioned member in a fatal road accident on April 16, 2024. Brigadier General Shadreck Vezha, Major Thabani Ncube, Major Mqondisi Gumbo, and Sergeant Chakabaiwa were involved in a road traffic incident at the 180km mark along the Harare-Bulawayo Road, close to Battlefields.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Brigadier General Vezha attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle and veered into oncoming traffic, resulting in a collision with a Mazda CX-5 traveling towards Kwekwe.

Several passengers from both vehicles sustained injuries of varying severity and are currently receiving treatment at Gweru and Kwekwe General Hospitals.

Further investigations into the accident are underway, and additional details will be provided in due course.”

Brigadier General Shadreck Vezha, then a Lieutenant Colonel, was honoured with a UN Medal in May 2014 for his involvement in the United Nations Syria Mission.

Alongside him, Lieutenant Colonels Chadokweedza Gota, Hamilton Ndhlovu, and Douglas Gwite were also conferred with UN medals.

Chamisa Mayor Snubbed From Independence Celebrations

By Political Reporter- The Emerson Mnagagwa-led Government has snubbed the Nelson Chamisa-aligned Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart from attending the Independence Day celebrations.

In a message sent to councillors, Coltart said that a few weeks ago, he was invited to a Business Expo where the Central Government snubbed the office of the Mayor.

Coltart asserted that he was not prepared to allow the office of Mayor to be denigrated again. 

Reads the message:

Councillors I need to explain my position to you all regarding the Independence Day celebrations today.

Whilst a general notice has been sent out to Councillors, the office of Mayor has not been invited by Government to attend. This is a basic courtesy that should be extended to the office, not me personally.

I have also been advised that in recent years Mayors were snubbed at Independence Day celebrations to such an extent that they no longer attended. Whilst I hope this treatment of Mayors has ended I am not prepared to allow it to happen again.

A few weeks ago I was invited to a function – a Business Expo – where the office of Mayor was snubbed by Government at the event. I registered a protest and left. I am not prepared to allow the office of Mayor be denigrated again.

I have made sure that at events I have control over, appropriate Government officials are invited personally and I expect that the office of Mayor will be respected in a similar fashion going forward.

I am grateful that you are attending this national celebration and am with you all in spirit.

Mnangagwa Frees Another Bunch Of 4000 Prisoners

By Political Reporter- President Mnangagwa has once again granted amnesty to over 4,000 prisoners as he struggles to leave a legacy; however, behind the facade of compassion lies a stark reality of failed governance and empty promises.

While the announcement by the Permanent Secretary in the Justice Ministry, Vimbai Nyemba, may seem like a benevolent act, it conveniently overlooks the dire state of Zimbabwe’s prisons and the glaring failures of Mnangagwa’s administration to improve the livelihoods of its citizens.

Last year, Mnangagwa’s amnesty included a notorious rapist known as ‘Mnangagwa Huchi,’ who shamelessly lauded the president, effectively transforming his incarceration into a platform for political endorsement.

This pattern of selective amnesty raises questions about the true motives behind Mnangagwa’s actions.

Moreover, the exclusion of certain offenses from the latest amnesty, including murder, treason, and sexual offenses, highlights the arbitrary nature of the pardon. It seems more like a calculated move to appease the public than a genuine effort to address systemic issues within the justice system.

The timing of this announcement, coinciding with Zimbabwe’s Independence Day celebrations, further underscores its political nature. By wrapping himself in the cloak of compassion, Mnangagwa seeks to deflect attention from his government’s inability to deliver meaningful change.

While the spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services paints a rosy picture of rehabilitation and societal integration for the released inmates, the reality on the ground tells a different story.

Without adequate support and resources, many former prisoners will struggle to reintegrate into society, perpetuating a cycle of poverty and crime.

German Classified Files: Mnangagwa Behind Chitepo, Tongogara Murders

By Alfred Jukwa | According to classified documents allegedly held by the German Intelligence or secret service, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), set to be declassified next year, and in the hands of an investigative German journalist in Hamburg, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, has been implicated as a key cog, in the assassinations of gallant liberation heros and icons, Herbert Chitepo and Josiah Tongogara, who both died shortly before Zimbabwe’s Independence in April 1980, due to car related accidents and sabotage.

The BND is the foreign intelligence service of the Federal Republic of Germany, compiling political, economic and military foreign intelligence.

Mnangagwa who hitherto appeared to have successfully covered his involvement and shameless tracks, in the mysterious deaths of Tongogara and Chitepo, for over four decades, is exposed in the embargoed BND files, as the enabling political mole for British Intelligence MI6, and Rhodesian Intelligence who leaked up-to-date information about Chitepo’s movements, activities and places of residence in Lusaka, Zambia, in the early to mid 1970s. Mnangagwa did the same espionage on Tongogara’s political plans and itinerary, providing his immediate Rhodesian intelligence bosses in Salisbury, with sensitive and vital security-related information on Tongogara.

Mnangagwa is also said to have used his proximity, as the late President Robert Gabriel Mugabe’s bodyguard and personal assistant, to retrieve Zanu party secrets and their military wing Zanla’s military operations.

Mnangagwa was working in close tandem with, Lieutenant
General George Peter Walls, the Head of the Armed Forces of Rhodesia during the Rhodesian Bush War from 1977 until his exile from Zimbabwe in 1980. The controversial octogenarian disputed leader, was also reporting to Ken Flower, head of the Rhodesian CIO.
In 2011 the BBC Radio 4 programme Documents featured testimony from Lord Owen that Flower had been an MI6 mole for Britain during his tenure as Rhodesian intelligence chief, and that his disclosure of Rhodesian plans had enabled Mugabe to survive assassination and become the first prime minister of Zimbabwe, following Independence.

The BND files allege that it was Flower, who recruited Mnangagwa to become a British MI6 intelligence permanent field asset in Zimbabwe, and recommended Mugabe to appoint Mnangagwa as the inugural state security minister in 1980, to enable Britain unlimited intelligence access of the new
Zimbabwean government under Mugabe, through Mnangagwa who had been planted at the intelligence nerve center of the country.

Based upon Mnangagwa’s espionage reports on Chitepo and Tongogara, the Rhodesian intelligence, in clandestine collaboration with the MI6 and America’s Central Intelligenece Agency (CIA), were able to allegedly plot sophisticated covert operations, which resulted in Chitepo’s car bombing assassination in March 1975, in Zambia. Tongogara lost his life in a freak car accident involving a lorry with a trailer on his way to Zimbabwe from Mozambique, on 26 December 1979.

It has also come to light that Britain wanted Chitepo and
Tongogara out of the way in favour of Mugabe, because Tongogara was considered “very militaristic and dictatorial”, while Chitepo was seen as a “radical Pan-Africanist.

Another shock disclosure, by the German files, notes that, Mnangagwa also wanted to pave the way for himself for a future presidency, but Tongogara was going to shatter his ambitions. Furthermore both Tongogara and Mnangagwa, came from the same home area. Tongogara was born in Shurugwi, while Mnangagwa claims to be from Zvishavane.

Mnangagwa who is still to comment over the development, has failed to respond to several previous allegations by war veterans who have been accusing him during press conferences that he was just a Rhodesian mercenary recruited to replace real fighters.

Dynamos Fans Call For Mangombe Dismissal

STRUGGLING Dynamos are on the lookout for a new coach and the priority, for now, is beyond the borders after losing hope in Genesis Mangombe.

The Dynamos leadership told Zimpapers Sports that the targeted foreign coach will take overall charge of the team while Mangombe will be relegated to a supporting role, provided he is keen to stay under the new set-up.

On Sunday Dynamos lost to Simba Bhora at Wadzanai Stadium in Shamva, dropping six places down the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League ladder to 14th with just six points from six matches.

They are already eight points behind the leaders, the Highlanders.

Dynamos have been firing blanks in front of goal and Mangombe is on the firing line for believing in Emmanuel Paga, Elie ILunga, and Sadney Urikhob as the attackers for the 2024 season.

So far, there is only one goal for this trio.

DeMbare fans have openly expressed their displeasure with Mangombe’s tactics and their cries have been getting louder with each passing game.

Police Recover Nine Fire Arms From Robbers

Nine armed robbery suspects have been arrested and nine fire arms recovered in Harare this Tuesday.

The armed robbery suspects are Innocent Chawaguta, Tafadzwa Charute, Owen Mbayi, Promise Mussa, Tapiwa Chigwaze, Winston Matizanadzo, Kamuriwo Madziwaona, Farai Chauke and Simbarashe Vhazhure.

The gang is linked to five armed robbery cases, which include the one which occurred in Eastlea, Harare where more than US$140 000 vanished in 2022 after they allegedly tied the private security officers who were manning JP Security company premises.

The gang also stands accused of robbing a certain Service Station of more than US$1 OOO after they threatened to shoot the Service station attendant before they tied him with a rope and force marched him into a separate room where they locked him up.

Nelson Chamisa Dismisses ZiG

Man in Court for $120 Million Fraud and Money Laundering Scheme Involving Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund

A 43-year-old Amos Chisvo appeared in Harare yesterday, facing charges of fraud and money laundering after allegedly defrauding the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (ZIMDEF) of a staggering $120 million. The court proceedings, presided over by magistrate Taurai Manuwere, saw Chisvo remanded in custody with a bail application set for April 24.

According to the prosecutor, Mr. Lancelot Mutsokoti, the elaborate scheme unfolded between December 1 and December 29, 2022. Chisvo, together with six already arrested accomplices, reportedly hacked ZIMDEF’s computer system, gaining unauthorized access to the organization’s bank accounts at ZB Bank. Utilizing the Zeepay Zimswitch System, the group is accused of funneling $50 million into a CBZ Bank account held by Atrier Engineering, an entity linked to his accomplices.

Further allegations include the transfer of $20 million into a fraudulently registered NBS Bank account owned by Newplaces Pvt Limited and $30 million into Tavaka Holdings’ account. The funds were reportedly converted into U.S. currency on the black market and used to purchase various goods.

Zim Mbinga Abducted & Killed In SA

By Showbiz Reporter- Zimbabwean businessman Evans Katumba, who was abducted in Durban, South Africa, on March 22, has been found dead.

A local online news portal reports that South African police believe Katumba, who was in his mid-30s, was killed on March 24, soon after his family paid R1.5 million ransom in a bid to secure his release.

His body was found last week in a field in Hammarsdale, a township 50 kilometres west of Durban.

A relative who asked not to be named told ZimLive on Tuesday that the police confirmed that the body was that of Katumba after DNA tests were conducted on the remains. Said the relative:

It’s him, police have confirmed to the family. They think he was shot on the same day we handed over the ransom money.

The family suspects Katumba knew his captors, and that could have been the reason why he was killed even after they paid R1.5 million of the R2.5 million ransom the kidnappers initially demanded.

Katumba is said to have arrived in South Africa over 16 years ago and initially worked as a truck driver for various companies in Durban.

He also worked as a petrol attendant before he set up his own fuel trading company in 2018.

Katumba was described by friends as “a nice guy” and “very humble” and was nicknamed Vardy for his goal-scoring prowess in social football much like the Leicester City Football Club striker, Jamie Vardy.

He ran a thriving diesel brokerage business and had recently purchased Yugo, one of Durban’s top nightclubs.

Katumba is said to have bought luxury vehicles including a R3.5 million Mercedes G63, a Ferrari and a sprawling mansion in Durban’s Yellowwood Park neighbourhood.

His friends believe that his decision to take over Yugo nightclub in February brought him unwelcome attention. The nightclub, now renamed Sky Premium Club, had only opened for one week when he was abducted.

It is alleged that Katumba was preparing to go to the nightclub on March 22 when he received a call at around 8 PM.

The family believes that the caller, who wanted a meeting, is someone whom Katumba knew.

He left home driving his brand new VW Amarok and picked up an artist who was due to perform at the nightclub that night before heading out to meet the mystery caller. Said a friend:

When they got to the place where this meeting was supposed to take place they were met by people armed with AK47s. They took him and the Amarok which was yet to be installed with a tracker.

The artist who was travelling with Katumba was left at the scene.

His abductors made contact with his family two days later on March 24. They warned the family not to cooperate with the police and then demanded R2.5 million in cash. They promised to release Katumba within an hour after the ransom payment.

Katumba’s friends and his family raised R1.5 million which was dropped at an open field on the outskirts of Ballito, as instructed by the kidnappers.

However, after the cash drop, the family never heard from the kidnappers again.

South African police informed the family they believe Katumba was shot dead on the same day the money was paid.

ZiG Collapses

By Business Reporter- Zimbabwe’s freshly introduced currency, ZiG, has begun a downward spiral in value just a week after its inauguration.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) unveiled ZiG on April 5 with high hopes, initially pegging it at 13.56 against the U.S. dollar. However, the currency quickly weakened, settling at 13.34 by April 17.

Recent reports from VOA reveal a grim reality: ZiG is now exchanging hands at approximately 20 on the black market, signifying a drastic devaluation in a short span.

Street traders in Harare lament the futility of ZiG, deeming it practically worthless.

Despite its electronic trading launch, physical notes and coins are set to enter circulation on April 30, yet scepticism looms large over their impact.

The disparity between plastic money and tangible cash is stark in Zimbabwe’s bustling streets and informal markets. The now-discredited RTGS plummeted to around 40,000 per USD upon ZiG’s arrival, while bond notes fetched a mere 7,000 per US$1. These figures elucidate a long-standing struggle with currency stability.

Samson Kabwe, a kombi conductor, eagerly anticipates the introduction of ZiG’s physical tender, hoping for much-needed change. His sentiment resonates with many who yearn for tangible currency in everyday transactions.

However, Gift Mugano, an esteemed economics professor, harbours doubts regarding ZiG’s longevity, drawing parallels to the ill-fated Zimbabwe dollar.

Citing the failure of previous currency initiatives, Mugano highlights the absence of sustainable production and pervasive trust issues plaguing the economy.

Contrary to Mugano’s scepticism, Mushayavanhu, a government spokesperson, exudes confidence in ZiG’s prospects.

Backed by reserves of gold and other minerals valued at $175 million, supplemented by $100 million in cash, ZiG aims to restore faith in the local currency.

Mushayavanhu envisions a gradual transition toward increased usage of ZiG, culminating in widespread acceptance and utilization.

Despite these aspirations, the central bank remains cautious, stipulating that commodities like fuel will continue to be traded in U.S. dollars, underscoring the arduous journey ahead for ZiG’s stabilization and acceptance.

Mnangagwa Slapped With Fresh Sanctions

By Political Reporter- The United States Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has lifted old sanctions on Zimbabwe while imposing a new embargo targeting President Emmerson Mnangagwa and key inner circle members.

The recently lifted sanctions dated back to the administration of the late President Robert Mugabe in 2003, marking a shift in U.S. policy toward Zimbabwe.

Under the new sanctions, President Mnangagwa finds himself under renewed scrutiny, alongside his wife Auxillia, Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, Defense Minister Oppah Muchinguri, Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister Owen Ncube, Central Intelligence Organisation Deputy Director Walter Tapfumaneyi, businessman Obey Chimuka, and tycoon Kudakwashe Tagwirei, along with his wife Sandra.

Additionally, entities such as Sakunda Holdings, Fossil Agro, and Fossil Contracting, linked to Tagwirei and Chimuka, were included on the new sanctions list.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control issued the final rule on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, removing the Zimbabwe Sanctions Regulations from the Code of Federal Regulations.

This action follows President Joe Biden’s executive order in February 2024, which repealed the initial order issued in March 2003.

The original order, enacted by then-President George W. Bush, had been consistently renewed until its recent revocation.

Bradley T. Smith, Director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control, confirmed the rationale behind this decision, stating that the national emergency, upon which the previous sanctions were based, was terminated by the president on March 4, 2024. The rule is set to take effect upon publication in the Federal Register on April 17, 2024.

Notably, OFAC designated 11 Zimbabwean individuals, including President Emmerson Mnangagwa, under its Global Magnitsky Program last month.

This marked a historic moment, as President Mnangagwa became the first sitting head of state to be designated by the U.S. under this program.

These designations were made in response to allegations of corruption and serious human rights abuses.

The imposition of these new sanctions underscores ongoing concerns regarding governance and human rights in Zimbabwe, signalling continued scrutiny from the international community.

Gono’s Full Statement Exposing Mutsvangwa

“SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT: NO “GOLD RESERVES” WERE EVER STOLEN BY ANYONE DURING MY TENURE AS RBZ GOVERNOR UNDER FMR. Late President Robert Gabriel Mugabe’s WATCH.

  1. Recent pronouncements by Hon. Chris Mutsvangwa, falsely alleging that the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) lost an unspecified quantity of gold to an unnamed Arab country during the tenure of an “unnamed Governor”who”served under the late Former President R.G.Mugabe ( MHDSRIEP)put the Nation in a state of unnecessary frenzy . If such lies are left unchecked with authentic facts, they could become that “little spark” that sets alight a whole forest at a time when the Bank ( RBZ) and the country at large, have more important issues to deal with than waste time attending to veld-fires whose uncontrolled consequences could end up melting whatever confidence the Bank is trying to build around itself, the country and this great Nation at large… and how dare we dampen people’s spirits at this “ celebratory hour” with blatant lies!
  2. Ordinarily, past Governors are not supposed to comment publicly on matters “current”which a sitting Governor is capable of dealing with regardless of which period those matters occurred. However in this case, I feel the need for leadership in dealing with this matter, so that there is we do not burden our new Governor Dr John Mushayavanhu or immediate past Governor Dr John Mangudya ,with an historical matter that I can easily deal with myself without “ambiguities “or the need to look for “sekuru Ndunge”( the late doyen of traditional healing and forecasting”to return from the other world so he can provide spiritual proclamations to something that is so straightforward, simple ( if we respect TRUTH)and explainable in plain, non-technical English.
    3.If this explanation still proves difficult to understand, I would advocate that we ask His Excellency President E.D. Mnangagwa to set in a Commission of Inquiry in terms of the Commission of Inquiry Act( Chapter 10:07)incorporating all interested parties to look into this serious allegation of perfidious proportions and report to the Nation its Findings in simpler language than i would have done here.
  3. Ordinarily too, no Governor would want to comment publicly on any matters he/ she dealt with while in Office because The Official Secrets Act( Chapter 11:09) by which binds and prohibits us from commenting on specific documentation recieved or matters of the State dealt with during our periods in Office(Section 4 is particularly telling ( level 14 fine or 20 years in jail or both if violated) but I am risking that by putting the record straight in a manner that cleans the image of the Nation’s Central Bank.
  4. The third reason I have decided to take the bull by the horns is the ambiguous nature of the allegations, casting aspersions on many distinguished personalities who served as Governors under Former President RGM and still carry “scars and pride” of national service equal only to a few living souls around during one of the most difficult economic episodes of our country.
  5. Their (Ex Governors) integrities ought to be respected and protected in retirement, as well as those the Hon. Ministers of Finance under whom they served and reported to. It is my duty to set the record straight for their sake as well as mine, so that our new Governor does not take his eyes off the “ZiG ball” to go into the archives of 18 years ago, searching for files and records for a response to this little fire that has deliberately or inadvertently been started with checking facts with all concerned.
  6. For the record ,former Governors for the period concerned which excludes our inaugural independence Governor the late Dr K. Moyana( MHDSRIEP) ( 1983-93)are: Dr L. L. Tsumba( 1993-2003)part of the sanctions period 2001 to May 2003);Acting Governor Charles Chikaura( May 2003-November 2003);Acting Governor Dr Charity Dhliwayo ( December 2013-April,2014); Dr John Mangudya (May,2014-November 2017).These periods were under Late Fmr. President RGM. I am sure all of them have suffered some distress because the statement from the Hon. Ambassador Spokesperson was ambiguous as to who among us could have been that dump or daft! Now they can all sit back and tell their families and friends “ no it was not me whom was being referred to”!
  7. I proudly served the longest of that sanctions period, 10 years in all, giving my country the best I could, from 1December 2003 to 30 November,2013 and it is natural to guess then who did what and when.

  8. Upfront, in summary, let it be known by all that we are talking here of whatCOULD , if it had succeeded, have been a “structured gold-backed transaction “which required mining the gold from underground in the first place, then export it in exchange for funds that would have been delivered and repackaged “fourfold in the first place” involving international banks and all above board, but after the first transaction amounting to US$5m deposit was executed by RBZ, the transaction failed on the other side and all parties to the envisaged transaction reimbursed each other, with no prejudice incurred or suffered by any of the parties to the transaction and ultimately, no GOLD was mined from underground for further export in terms of the initial Agreement which is now causing a hullabaloo due people who were not part of the RBZ team trying to confuse the Nation instead of letting us is happily celebrate our 44th UHURU!One frowns at the timing of the release of such “ news” even if , by any stretch of imagination, it was true!We need a little bit of finesse and circumspection in the discharge of our duties when it comes to the dissemination that has potential to harm the reputations of others in our positions as leaders! Please.
    10.That’s the summary but here are the details. Background… ————————-
  9. Managing this economy during the period 2000 to 2017 was not a “ walk in the park” for any Governor. The full story is yet to be written about the trials and tribulations of the times but that is for another day.
    12.Some of us got onto the Sanctions list in 2001 and so for 23 years we were not as free Zimbabweans as some amongst us. Again for another day. We will always come out of retirement and defend the country when someone tries to burn it by setting the record straight when necessary.
  10. The country survived through a series of non conventional gymnastics at a time when it was easier to give up than to accept thankless national service with all its risks in an environment of severe sanctions, international isolation, mono-currency and politically driven hyperinflation. It was a period most people witnessed the futility of trying to turn around our economic fortunes in an environment of needless political confrontation and conflict among fellow citizens.Again, that’s for another day. The RBZ Gold Contract of 2006.
  11. When making public statements from positions of authority, we must resist temptation to be excitable and ambiguous, particularly when dealing with matters that could harm the confidence of key institutions such as a Central Bank. Facts and full facts backed by understanding the technical side of the matters at hand as well as CONTEXT are important.
  12. Faced with a “ no forex reserve” situation for both Government and industry, it was incumbent on the sitting Governor to find that forex by whatever legal means and be accountable for every move taken by the Central Bank and its officials. It was also important to keep the Principals, especially the President fully in the picture and to ensure that at the end of each year, the Bank’s books were audited by at least two of the big 5 external international audit firms and results submitted on time to the Minister of Finance and Parliament.
  13. The RBZ, during my tenure, was at different times annually audited by Delloite & Touché, KPMG, Ernest & Young as well as by Kudenga & Co BDO. At no time during my ten years at the Bank did we get qualified accounts.
  14. In May,2006 RBZ, after getting express approval from H.E. Cde. RGMugabe, entered into an Agreement with a large Jewelry Company based in Saudi Arabia.
  15. The contract sought to provide Zimbabwe with an immediate cash injection of US$150m.At the same time, we negotiated with a large South African Bank to deposit that money with them as cash security in exchange for a Guarantee Line of Credit 4 times that amount i.e. US$600m which was to be used for importation of goods and services from South Africa particularly electricity, fuel, grain, fertilizers, mining inputs, machinery etc. in a 3 month revolving basis for 12-24 months as long as the cash backing was there.
    19.The Guarantee was to cost us 1-2% negotiable at time of execution while the Saudi deal required us to supply over the same period a total of 200,000 Troy ounces of gold at a discount of 34% London Bullion price on day of trading/delivery.
  16. The discount was on paper very steep but overally when we worked out the sums against the imminent risks that were facing us, we saw ultimate benefit to this economy through the multiplier effect of running the $600m facility on a 3 months cycle for 24 months against gold which was still UNDERGROUND worth between $140-150m to be supplied over a 24 month period while the economy got $600m for immediate use 8 times at a cost of day 1,5%per annum fees. Here is the arithmetic: ——

It is over ten years since I left RBZ but I still have the conceptual framework in my mind of what was going to happen if it had worked and I am still an Accountant and banker at heart: 200,000 Troy Ounces value $150m ———— Cost( Discount)34% 51m Guarantee Fees to SA Bank 18m ———— Total Facility cost over 2yrs $69m ———— Income Side: ——————- Raising Fees charged to Zim Customers per quarter: 0,0075x$600 x 8 =. $36m Interest @ 5% /quarter. $60m Interest on int. & Fees 7m ————- Total Income to the Bank $103m Less cost of Facility. (69m) ————— Net Income to RBZ. $34m —————- Equivalent to a gain of 50,000 Troy ounces of gold in the 2 years the facility was planned to run for.
  18. That amount would have been more than sufficient for the Bank’s iwn operating expenses without the need to knock on Treasury for support from tax-payers funds!
  19. The Bank was required to pay $5m worth of Gold as a deposit and this was paid. When the lender couldn’t deliver the cash backing per contract, the Agreement was canceled and RBZ got back its US$5m.No prejudice to anyone.
  20. It is important to also realize that we were dealing with an internationally recognized Jeweler and the Saudis are generally very honest people. And to say “ our gold reserves was stolen “ is wrong. We despatched about 7500 or so Troy Ounces worth $5m. We got back our $5m. At that time, in May, gold price was about $700/oz.if I’m not mistaken. Some Basics.
  21. What is the meaning of Gold Reserves?
    26.The term RESERVES generally refers to any surplus to immediate requirements.
  22. Gold Reserves in this case would mean that RBZ had accumulated at some stage, surpluses to its immediate needs but nothing could be further from the truth… I got into a car that had no fuel on 1 December 2003 and I did my best to drive it on empty.
  23. The Saudi contract was going to be fulfilled over a 12-24 months from incremental gold coming from the ground. We had done our homework as far as who the off-takers of the facility were going to be. It was not a blind shot so to speak.
  24. To then mislead the public by saying RBZ lost the Nation’s “ Gold Reserves” is surely technically wrong and dangerous, worse when we seek to badmouth and besmirch the dead. Inga zvinonzi “ wafa Wa aka” wani? Why this penchant towards hate-speech against those you were with in the bush but never against Ian Smith? Nobody has bothered to find out how the RBZ was being run during the 15 years of sanctions and what some of us found in whatever records remained in there.
  25. I certainly am not a direct descendant of St Peter or any of the Apostles who probably did not make mistakes but whatever mistakes my Team and I made during my tenure were neither deliberate nor fraudulent as all the audited set of books during my time there can attest. The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission( ZACC).
  26. It is this same kind of irresponsible talk we witnessed from Hon. Ambassador Chris Mutsvanga who also happens to be my uncle, which in September/October 2021 led to ZACC spending public money and hours on a wild-goose chase after an anonymous someone misled ZACC to think the same way Zimbabweans have been emotionally whipped to think likewise.
  27. ZACC carried out extensive investigations into this matter under Ref. 58/12/20 and 102/11/20 examining documents and interviewing RBZ Governor Mangudya, Mr Azvinandaa Saburi ( Director of Financial Markets who signed the Contract with Saudis under my authority) and others including myself in September 2021 and concluded that everything was above board and that there was no prejudice to anyone including RBZ and the Nation at large. Need to verify full facts .
  28. It is key and important for people entrusted to speak on behalf of important organizations and political parties to always check their facts thoroughly for the sake of their own credibilities and that of others.
  29. I forgive my sekuru for he was misled into believing that something was really amiss and more importantly, he was in the People’s Republic China as our Ambassador at the time we were battling to sort this economy out so he wouldn’t have been aware of some of the difficulties we went through to try and raise funding, including that required to support our esteemed embassies.
  30. This country could benefit more from our individual and combined efforts if we sincerely direct them towards what our President, H.E. E.D. Mnangagwa and the Second Republic are trying very hard under difficult circumstances to achieve than to engage in blame-games that will not strengthen our new currency or take us foward especially during the country’s period of UHURU brought about by my sekuru and others.
  31. Happy 44th to us All. I cherish the wonderful work being done by the Second Republic and salute all our National Heroes and Heroines, gallant fighters of our Liberation War, Mujibhas and Chimbwidos.
