Today marks 28 years after the death of Zimbabwe’s music icon, Leonard Dembo, whose legacy still lives on through his timeless music.
Born Kwangwari Gwaendepi in 1959, the man known as Leonard Dembo in the music circles, launched his career in the early 1980s and became a darling in the entertainment industry after churning out hit after hit for over a decade.
Although his music career was cut short after his death in 1996 at the age of 37, his vocal mastery and lyrical prowess have outlived him.
“I started listening to Leonard Dembo in 1986 i remember his first show I attended, we were not allowed to get in because I was under 18 so i went on top of the wall just to see him. From that time to now he is my biggest musician. I have phases in life when I am happy and there are his songs that I play when I am sad as well,” said a fan.
Yet another fan said, “I was just three-years-old when my dad started going with me to his shows and I am happy today we are now a movement that follows Dembo. We call ourselves greatest fans of all time.”
“I loved Dembo’s music so much that when I grew up I decided to connect with his family. He might have left, but i actually became part of his family. If you check those who know on social media, people tag me on anything that concerns Dembo. All the people around me know and even my ring tones are his songs,” another fan noted.
Having worked with Dembo during his prime, Guitarist Innocent Mujintu who was part of the Barura Express back in the 1980s, knows it all when it comes to the Sungura maestro and his timeless compositions.
“Dembo was very kind to me. I remember we started working in the 80s and recorded a number of albums together. We went on tours to a number of countries. One thing we did as a culture was to treat all our songs as our babies. We would take time and give 100 percent on every single piece. I think that made us stand out because we took enough time.”
Dembo went on to receive recognition beyond the country’s borders and one of his greatest hits, ‘Chitekete’ was played at the 1996 Miss World beauty pageant held in Namibia.
Music and arts expert Plot Mhako says Dembo’s originality and authenticity set him apart from the rest, “Dembo did not try to imitate somebody else and sound like what most artists do. He is someone who remained very much related to his own identity and this is something that I think is a secret for artists who want to make music that will stand the taste of time.”
Dembo horned his skills with the “Outsiders Band”, which released hit songs such as “Dambudzo” in 1982.
He then joined another group known as “Five Notes” before he formed the Barura Express in 1984 upon which he released an 8-track album titled “Mai Nevana Vavo”.
Dembo went on to release the album “Nhamo Moto” in 1986 and many other hits including Venenzia, Gire, Zii Zii, Ruva Rashe and Shiri Yakangwara which are still popular to this day.
It might be 28 years after Dembo’s death but experts believe his legacy lives on and his music remains of substance, quality and relatable.

In a political maneuver that has raised eyebrows and stirred controversy, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa is reportedly employing financial incentives to sway opposition members into joining his ruling party, Zanu PF. According to well-placed sources within Zanu PF, cash inducements have been instrumental in enticing opposition supporters to defect.
The latest public display of defection occurred on Tuesday when Zanu PF announced that 63 members from the opposition party, CCC (Citizens Coalition for Change), had crossed over to join Mnangagwa’s ranks.
This orchestrated move was characterized by a notable show of support as these defectors were publicly paraded and photographed alongside Dr. M Bimha, the National Political Commissar of Zanu PF.
The event was accompanied by a statement from Zanu PF, which read, “63 Harare East CCC Change Champions who moved to ZANU PF posing for photo shot with National Political Commissar Dr M Bimha at the party HQ 8 April 2024.”
This statement and the subsequent display exemplify the visible efforts by Mnangagwa’s camp to highlight and capitalize on these defections.
The motivations behind such defections are believed to be rooted in monetary incentives offered to disenchanted opposition members.
One source from Zanu PF, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed, “President Mnangagwa’s administration is strategically using cash to lure opposition supporters, particularly those dissatisfied with the current political landscape.”
This claim underscores the tactical nature of these defections, pointing to a broader strategy aimed at consolidating political power.
In response to these allegations, members of the opposition have criticized Mnangagwa’s tactics as coercive and indicative of an unfair electoral environment.
Nelson Chamisa, leader of the CCC, condemned the inducements, stating, “It is unfortunate that Mnangagwa’s regime is resorting to bribery to undermine the democratic process.”
Such sentiments echo broader concerns within the opposition regarding the integrity of Zimbabwe’s political climate.
Despite the controversy, Mnangagwa’s camp remains steadfast in its approach.
The use of financial incentives to sway political allegiance underscores the fierce competition within Zimbabwe’s political arena, where power dynamics and loyalty shifts play pivotal roles.
Mnangagwa’s utilization of cash incentives to attract opposition members raises critical questions about the state of Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
As the country approaches crucial elections, the impact of such tactics on the democratic process and public perception remains to be seen.
The intertwining of money and politics underscores the complex and evolving nature of governance in Zimbabwe, highlighting the enduring struggle for influence and legitimacy.
South African police has confirmed the arrest of six suspects in the murder of Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs.
Fleurs was shot dead in a hijacking incident at a fuel station in Florida, Johannesburg on Wednesday.
Authorities have said Fleurs was waiting to be served at the station in his Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI when he was confronted by two men, who ordered him out of the vehicle at gunpoint.
The defender was shot in the chest before one of the assailants drove off in his vehicle, while the other man followed in a white BMW 1 series.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.
Fleurs’ vehicle, which had already been stripped, was recovered on Monday.
SA Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo said the suspects were traced to and arrested in Slovoville, Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

He added: “Police believe that the suspects are part of a syndicate that is responsible for car hijackings in Gauteng, and the search for more suspects is continuing.”
The suspects are expected to appear in court on Friday, charged with murder and hijacking.

By Showbiz Editor | ZimEye | The Unwarranted Chaos Surrounding Mai Titi: A Wake-Up Call on Digital Responsibility.
In a recent and unsettling turn of events, the digital space became a battleground of morality and privacy invasion when unidentified individuals from Zimbabwe took advantage of images related to the celebrated South African-based socialite, Mai Titi. This act of digital indiscretion has sparked a wave of controversy, shedding light on the darker facets of internet misuse and the collateral damage inflicted upon the innocent.
https://x.com/zimeye/status/1777984279219150925?s=46
Mai Titi, a prominent figure renowned for her vibrant personality and significant social media presence, found herself at the center of a chaotic storm when her picture content was misused. The misuse of her digital content not only violates personal boundaries but also raises critical questions about digital safety and the ethics of content sharing.
The People’s General, another notable personality in the social sphere, vocalized his distress over the situation. He highlighted the overlooked aspect of this debacle—the impact on minors and the indispensable role of community in safeguarding the vulnerable. “Whoever leaked these things, did not care to consider that the minor has a future they need to be shaped for,” he lamented, underlining the responsibility that comes with elderhood in guiding and protecting the youth.
The misuse of Mai Titi’s images serves as a horrific reminder of the pervasive issues surrounding digital content sharing and the ease with which individuals can fall victim to online malfeasance. The incident not only violates personal privacy but also encroaches upon the sanctity of minor protection, spotlighting the urgent need for community vigilance and a collective stance against digital misconduct.
The People’s General’s narrative extends beyond just a plea for privacy; it’s a call to action for societal responsibility towards the younger generation. “As elders, you are expected to take care of minors in your area, because anyone this vulnerable is your own,” he asserted, stressing the importance of community guardianship in nurturing and safeguarding minors.
He draws a parallel between the incident and the broader challenges of parenting in the digital age, pointing out the unpredictable behavior of children and the implications of parental absence due to career demands. His personal anecdotes about his child’s demands for more autonomy serve as a testament to the unpredictable nature of child rearing and the complexities of ensuring their safety in a world increasingly dominated by digital interactions.
This incident with Mai Titi is a wake-up call to all stakeholders—parents, guardians, and the digital community at large—to reassess their approach to digital content sharing and privacy. It underscores the necessity of fostering a digital environment that prioritizes the well-being and privacy of all individuals, especially the most vulnerable.
In conclusion, as we navigate the intricate web of digital interactions, the situation surrounding Mai Titi reminds us of the critical need for empathy, responsibility, and proactive measures in safeguarding individual privacy and nurturing a safe digital habitat for future generations. The chaos that erupted is not just a singular event but a reflection of broader societal challenges that require collective action and a recommitment to the principles of digital decency and mutual respect.
By Diana Machingauta| So the Zimbabwean government has just created a new currency called the ZiG which we are told is backed by the country’s gold reserves and other precious metals.
The idea is that the new currency will be stronger and more stable than the local currency that preceded it.
Simple logic says that for this new currency to be the solution to Zimbabwe’s inflation problems, it will not be like the previous local currency and the conditions which sank its predecessor will no longer be there.
Is this what is going to happen this time? Absolutely not. One does not need to be an economist to foresee that there will be mass printing of this ZiG currency which will be used by the usual culprits to buy US dollars.
Not only that, but the notion that we should trust the valuation of this ZiG currency using gold reserves is a big joke considering the gold smuggling shenanigans we have seen at the hands of Zanu and the diverse pack of runners who smuggle the precious metal out of country on their behalf.
The problem in the country is with the current political leadership who have overseen unprecedented looting of the country’s resources. What Zimbabwe needs is not new a currency, but a new government.
By Diplomatic Correspondent- The British government has denied permanent residence to a 45-year-old Zimbabwean woman living in the United Kingdom (UK) since 2001 despite qualifying for that status.
The woman has reportedly spent £12 000 on applications to stay in the European country, but she keeps getting refused.
Patience Jamela moved from Zimbabwe 23 years ago to train as a teacher in the UK. She said she was drawn to studying in England because of the “state-of-the-art” teaching.
Jamela told the Bristol Post that she had planned to return to Zimbabwe but ended up making Britain her home after meeting a man.
She has reportedly applied to become a permanent citizen four times over the years – at £3k each time. She said she did not know why each time her application was turned down by the Home Office.
Jamela, a mother of three, said she wants residency as she struggles to get a mortgage and has, at points, had her travel restricted. She said:
I feel like my life is in limbo. I am a good citizen. I pay my taxes. I don’t understand why I should be penalised.
Jamela left Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, to study for a PGCE at Canterbury Christ Church University in Kent.
She had planned to return to Zimbabwe after finishing her studies, but in 2004 she met her former partner through online dating.
Jamela became pregnant and the pair went on to have three children. Charlotte, now 18, Alissa, 17, and Jaden, 11.
She initially applied for permanent residence in 2012 but was turned away by the Home Office. She reapplied in 2015, 2018, and 2021, and is now preparing to submit another application this month.
However, each time she applies she’s told she doesn’t qualify for settlement and is given temporary leave-to-remain instead – which has to be renewed every three years. Said Jamela:
I have no criminal record. I don’t understand why they have not allowed me to stay. My life is on hold.
My children have never met their grandmother because she lives in Zimbabwe – we can’t afford to travel there. We have not had a holiday because of this situation. The last holiday was when the kids were small.
I can’t afford to move house because I am always thinking about the next application. My kids are anxious. They don’t know what’s going to happen.
This country’s their life. They have family, cousins and nieces here. This is all they have known.
Zimbabweans face significant challenges when seeking permanent residence in Britain, mainly because the UK has implemented strict immigration policies that include high fees, lengthy application processes, and stringent eligibility criteria.

Whereas ,Section 317 of the constitution of Zimbabwe requires the RBZ to regulate the monetary system to promote currency stability and overall macroeconomic stability, there is need to analyse the impact of the recently promulgated monetary policy statement on the new currency as introduced.
The new monetary policy statement was introduced under the theme,”Recalibrating the monetary policy framework to anchor Currency to achieve Exchange rate and
Price stability.”
As the Democratic Alternative in Zimbabwe,we believe the new Currency will not succeed because of thr following factors:
1.Disputed Political Leadership
Exchange rate volatility and inflation are just but a symptom of Poor Governance. It is important to understand that the financial markets and all economic variables are highly responsive to developments in Politics. The continued disputed elections continue to creat disbelief and a negative perception that bring in adverse expectations about the economy. Those who rig elections unfortunately cannot rig the economy too.In most countries economic stability is not only the preserve of Central banks and monetary authorities, but a collective responsibilty with political leadership having a greater part to play than Technocrats and professionals.
2.Crises of Confidence
Confidence refers to the trust and belief which the business community and citizens have torwads the government and is a result of past expiriences.Confidence is built from consistent demonstration of robust economic policies, governance, integrity, transparency and accountability. The inherent fear that episodes of yester years might repeat themselves is what causes the crises of confidence.Let me put this point into perspective.Between the period 2003-2008 Zimbabwe expirience hyperinflation and currencies of varied denominations and form were introduced such as the Special agro cheques,Travellers cheques , Bearer cheques and a 100 trillion dollar bank note. Many people lost value of their money ,pensioners who worked from the 1960s went home with virtually nothing and business people lost their capital.
As if that was enough, in 2016,The governnment introduced Bond notes saying they were backed by foreign currency to the tune of USD 200 millon from Afre-xim Bank saying its intended to support and encourage exporters. The Bond note was to run along with the basket of 8 currencies. The truth of our expirience is that the Bond note failed. There is no difference between the bond note and The Zimbabwe Gold(ZiG) because both currencies were backed by foreign currency. So there is no guarantee that the Zimbabwe Gold will succeed,it will fail.
On 20 Feb 2019,the government through a Monetary policy statement announced that Bondnotes(notes and coins) ,Ecocash balances and one money balances were now called the RTGS dollar,an official currency that worked alongside a basket of 8 foreign currencies.4 months down the line,on the 24th of June 2019,the RBZ banned the use of the basket of foreign currencies and paved way for the RTGS dollar to work as a mono currency. What a complete Sommersault??Imagine the implication on Business planning,Pricing of contracts and forecasting?Regardless of such an unpopular decree, the people of zimbabwe resisted the unpopular law and continued to trade using the US dollar along with other foreign currencies.Again most people lost value because the RTGS dollar was then pegged at 1:1 with the USD for the purpose of recalibrating contracts ,prices and loans. This is a blatant demonstration that money can only be money if it is generally accepted by the citizens. The citizens rebelled against the its goverment because they were fedup with Monetary policy inconsistency.
On 29 March 2020,the goverment ,feeling the pressure and power of people resistence to their June 2019 monetary policy, reverted back to the use of a basket of foreign currencies to work with the RTGS dollar which was then changed name on the same date to Zimbabwean Dollar(ZWL).
Three years down the Line,Boom..another currency called the Zimbabwe dollar (ZiG) is launched.it is imperative to state that ,we have been in this vicious cycle of currency introduction, reinvention and recycle without any meaningful change. This fundamental aspect of confidence has not been addressed and as such, the new currency is bound to fail.
3.Insatiable Appetite to Print Money
The government of Zimbabwe as led by Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has been carrying out capital projects such as road construction and other infrastructure using printed money. The RBZ itself was crediting the accounts of those Contractors using balances that did not come from the Consolidated Revenue Fund but instead created money balances there by illegally doing the work of the Ministry of Finance in what is called Quasi Fiscal operations. No wonder why the Ministry of Finance is finding it difficult to seek condonation of the unauthorised expenditures which are now sitting on the RBZ books.
The creation of such new balances to pay contractors, led to persistent money supply growth which ultimately pushed prices up leading to Inflation and widening exchange rates. As we speak, many projects are lined up and the government doesnt have access to Long term financing to support them due to the huge debt burden. As a result, the only way to finance these projects is via seinorage. This indiscipline of printing money that exceeds the Reserves that back a currency will ultimately,we are going back to the era of high inflation and exchange rate volatility and the currency will fail.We cannot trust the RBZ governer only for his word that they are not going to print because history has taught us otherwise.
4. Demand Limitations for the ZiG
The RBZ only stimulated the demand for the Zimbabwe dollar thorough only 50% of Quarterly payment Dates income tax payments payable in ZiG.It is common cause that Income tax is the 3rd highest earner of Tax revenue with around 15% contribution. As such ,50% of such will be around 7.5% of our Total Revenue is payable in ZiG.This is an outright admission by RBZ that it doesnt trust its own currency by ring fencing VAT and PAYE which are the biggest contributors to revenue to continue remitting in USD.The governor must also taste his own medicine before handing over to Zimbabweans.I expect them to ensure that all vital services such as Central registry fees(Passports, birth certifucates etc),Electricity ,fuel ,vehicle licensing,Toll fees and all statutory fines are exclusively payable in ZiG.This could have generated demand for the Zimbabwe Gold currency. Its clear that the RBZ governer and government do not trust their own currency as they themselves continue to prefer the USD.
5.Awareness Deficiency
Policy pronouncements of this nature requires extensive awareness campaigns and consultations. This could have resulted in people to become part and parcel of the new pronouncements.Imagine an old man from Dotito going to the shops to buy bread using the ZWL only to be told it was phased out.Zimbabweans were ambushed and caught off guard with the new policy pronouncement. This creats compartments of disbelief and fear of loss but when people are extensively consulted and informed, they can embrace the new without hesitation or doubt. In light of this ,the New currency will not see the light of the day.
6.Policy incompatibilty
The backing of the Zimbabwe dollar by the US dollar when the Usd is working along the the ZiG is an admission that the USD is a powerful currency and will be preferred at all material times as a store of value. This then means that people of Zimbabwe will always prefer the US dollar nomatter the circumstances and as such the USD will eventually drive out the ZiG.The Zimbabwe dollar can only be backed by foreign currency and succeed if it works as a mono currency. The demand and commoditisation of the USD will continue and the Zig will fail.
7.Production and Supply side bottlenecks
The success of a currency largely depends on the productive capacity utisation of a country. As it stands our country reels from serious under capacity utilisation as most industries remain closed,Agriculture is at its worst low due to drought caused by El Nino and infrastructure gaps that negates production.A country ‘s currency strength(exchange rate) as compared to other currencies depends largely on the competitiveness of its products on the international market. We must produce so much and in such a way that we generate more exports compared to our counterparts. As it stands ,for every 1$ worth of Exports receipts is compensated by $4 worth of imports. This means that the fundamentals are weak to sustain a new currency.
NB :All these raised issues are largely connected and sumed up to Lack of political will by the Government.Defacto leaders do not care about its people, they actually hate them for not voting them into power and as such they lead the country without the necessary legitimacy capital ,advancing selfish interests and personal aggrandizement!!!
Recommendations
In light of the impending failure of the Zimbabwe dollar,l suggest the following:
1.Full Dollarisation of the Economy
The RBZ in its Monetary policy pronouncement, admitted that 80% of Zimbabwe’ s transactions are now in USD.This literrally means that the country has fully dollarised and the USD is the currency of choice .This will eliminate the Exchange rate volatility and hyper inflation at least in the short to medium term .
2.Genuine Re engagement with International financial institutions over Debt
The country cannot continue reliance on printing money to fund capital projects which under normal circumstances require long term financing. We are not getting long term financing at the moment because of our failure to repay and service our huge debt which is currently sitting on 17 Billon USD.In light of this, a robust reengagement process is necessary to unlock long term financing for real development of infrastructure that aids production.
3.Restoration of Legitimacy
The Authority to govern is derived from the people through democratic elections.Everything else fall in its place if this fundamental issue is properly executed. No economy will flourish when the political leadership ‘s ascendancy to power is disputed.it is only when political leaders find each other and put Zimbabwe first, have a collective vision and restore Legimacy for the development of a country.Empirical evidence proves that, since 2000,disputed elections have hounded us in the form of economic challenges. We only got a reprieve between year 2009 to 2013 where a shared vision was ushered in via the Global political Agreement. From 2016, the demon came back untill today we are reeling from a crisis of misaligned politics.

Zimbabwean opposition leader Advocate Nelson Chamisa has raised serious concerns about the state of the country’s infrastructure, labeling it as outdated and unsafe.
His remarks come in the wake of a tragic building collapse in Harare that resulted in loss of life and injuries.
In a statement made on Tuesday, Chamisa highlighted the urgent need for comprehensive infrastructure upgrades, emphasizing the risks posed by aging buildings and facilities.
He expressed deep sympathy for the victims and their families affected by the recent disaster.
“Yesterday, on The Chamisa News Channel (CNC), I expressed my profound sorrow regarding the tragic loss of life and injuries resulting from the building collapse in Harare on Saturday. My deepest condolences go out to the bereaved families, and my thoughts and prayers are with them and those injured,” Chamisa stated.
The opposition leader stressed that it is unacceptable for such tragedies to occur due to outdated infrastructure.
“A nation cannot rely on infrastructure that is over 44 years old without undergoing renovation and reconstruction,” Chamisa emphasized, underlining the urgent need for investment and modernization in Zimbabwe’s public infrastructure.
Chamisa’s remarks underscore broader concerns about the impact of neglect and inadequate maintenance on public safety and well-being.
He attributed these challenges to what he termed “broken politics” and highlighted the need for a concerted effort to address Zimbabwe’s infrastructure deficit.
“The toll of broken politics has been evident and devastating on our nation. We stand with the bereaved and the injured during this difficult time. May God comfort them all,” Chamisa concluded, calling for unity and collective action to prevent future disasters and ensure the safety of Zimbabwean citizens.

Top economist Prof Gift Mugano has sworn that the new currency introduced by Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor John Mushayavanhu will be killed by the black market just like its predecessor the bond notes.
Responding to Mushayavanhu’s presentation at the post monetary policy statement briefing, Mugano said government had failed the ZiG by allowing fuel to be sold exclusively in United States dollars when the country has its own currency.
“Our esteemed Governor underestimate the power of the black market. The decision by GOZ’s to allow exclusive use of USD at the fuel stations is the biggest mistake 101. The black market can’t be killed by ZiG. Rather, ZiG will be killed by money changers. Mark this post!,” said Mugano.
Last week, RBZ introduced a new currency which they said was backed by gold reserves. Economists have issued conflicting analysis on the new money with some saying it will fail as the prevailing environment is not yet ripe for a new currency.
Pro-government economic analysts have however said they see the introduction of a gold backed currency as a masterstroke move that will finally provide economic relief the country has been yearning for, for years.
By Political Reporter- The acting roational President of the CCC, Tendai Biti, has announced his departure from the main opposition party.
Early this year, Biti teamed up with Welshman Ncube and booted out Nelson Chamisa from the CCC.
Biti cited the need for a break from politics to engage in soul-searching activities.
Speaking exclusively on HSTV’s #FreeTalk show, Biti revealed his decision to step away from the political arena, expressing a desire to explore other avenues to challenge the ruling Zanu PF party’s authority.
Dismissing claims made by CCC spokesperson Jacob Mafume regarding his role in the party’s leadership, Biti clarified that he was not involved in any decision-making process regarding rotational leadership within the CCC.
Biti’s withdrawal from the CCC leadership, alongside Welshman Ncube and Lynette Kairenyi Kore, sparked public outrage, with accusations of betrayal and collusion with Zanu PF. However, Biti vehemently denied these allegations, asserting his commitment to pursuing democratic change in Zimbabwe.
During his tenure as a Member of Parliament, Biti gained prominence for his anti-corruption efforts and urged Zimbabweans to take control of their fight for democracy, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility.
Biti’s departure comes shortly after Ncube’s declaration of success in unifying the opposition and strengthening the CCC. However, another faction within the CCC, led by Jameson Timba, interpreted Biti’s resignation as a validation of their stance, asserting Nelson Chamisa’s leadership as the only legitimate one within the party.
Despite his temporary withdrawal from politics, Biti assured his supporters of his eventual return before the 2028 general elections, signaling his enduring commitment to Zimbabwean democracy.
By A Correspondent| Former Foreign Affairs minister Walter Mzembi has mocked former Citizens Coalition for Change vice President Tendai Biti over his move to take a sabbatical from politics.
Posting on X, Mzembi said politicians will never take a sabbatical from politics as it is impossible to offload a purpose just like that.
“Political Sabbatical is when a Politician says I am taking leave from Politics . I tried it , and came out of it mentally before the ink pronouncing my Sabbatical had dried on the “100% cotton paper” I was scribbling on,” said Mzembi.
He added that politicians will only take a sabbatical from politics when they are dead.
“Reality is a Politician will only take a Sabbatical when he is 6 feet under . Its impossible to offload a purpose just like that , so a Sabbatical may just mean a leader with no formal leadership responsibility, no obligations to anyone but for how long my generation shall we be like Jonah of Nineveh while Rome burns?” added Mzembi.
Speaking on HSTV’s #FreeTalk show, Biti revealed his decision to step away from the political arena, expressing a desire to explore other avenues to challenge the ruling Zanu PF party’s authority.

HEAVY rains which were accompanied by strong winds left a trail of destruction in Midlands province with Gweru Provincial Hospital being damaged.
Part of the roof of the recently commissioned Centre Excellence at Gweru Provincial Hospital was blown away, while some vehicles were destroyed after being crashed by trees.
Midlands Provincial Medical Director Dr Mary Muchekeza however, assured the nation of normal services despite the unfortunate incident.
“We experienced an extensive hailstorm yesterday for a very short time. Unfortunately, some trees fell over the buildings. The building is centre for excellence for patients that are being treated for HIV and Aids using anti-retroviral therapy. The damage from our preliminary assessment as a team, shows that it was not extensive. What was extensive was the storm. The damage to the building is not going to disrupt any service delivery as far as we are concerned. So our message to the community is that they can still continue to come to Gweru Provincial Hospital for their services,” she said.
Government urged the local authority to cut down trees which have outlived their lifespan, while pledging support for rehabilitating the damaged building.
“I would want to urge the local authority, to trim tall trees mainly the big and old trees, and in the essence of beautification our city. They should also go a step in collaboration with forestry commission so that they re-green the city. This must be done in a way that they put new trees and also appropriate species in cognisance with the climate change that we are experiencing nowadays. We are also urging the communities, even private parties, to also trim their trees and cut down most of those old trees in their properties. During hailstorms, it is not appropriate to park vehicles under trees,” highlighted Provincial Civil Protection Unit chairperson,” Mr Charltone Murove.
The country experienced some hailstorms over the weekend which led to the destruction of property, with a building collapsing in Harare killing one person, injuring six and damaging property.

In a disturbing turn of events in Harare, Zimbabwe, a man was brutally killed by a mob on April 5th for allegedly stealing maize cobs from a field.
The incident, which occurred in an open space in Rugare, highlights the dangerous consequences of mob justice and the urgent need for authorities to address community violence.
According to reports from the Harare police, a group of individuals attacked an unidentified man after he was caught red-handed by Gift Kamuripa, the owner of the maize field.
The situation quickly escalated as the mob took matters into their own hands, resulting in the tragic death of the accused thief.
In a surprising twist, Gift Kamuripa, the aggrieved farmer, has been arrested in connection with the murder, underscoring the complexities surrounding cases of mob violence.
The use of mob violence to address alleged crimes is not unique to this incident.
Across the globe, instances of vigilante justice often lead to dire consequences, undermining the rule of law and perpetuating cycles of violence.
In this case, the swift escalation from suspicion to violence serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by such actions.
Furthermore, this tragedy comes on the heels of another chilling incident in Gwanda, where Khaulani Ndlovu was discovered dead with multiple stab wounds along a dust road between Mornef and Bina mine area on April 6th.
The circumstances surrounding Ndlovu’s murder remain unclear, with authorities in Gwanda urging the public to come forward with any information that could aid in their investigation.
These recent events underscore the importance of addressing community concerns through legal channels and fostering a culture of accountability. While it’s understandable that individuals may feel compelled to take matters into their own hands, resorting to violence only serves to perpetuate chaos and erode trust in the justice system.
Law enforcement agencies must play a pivotal role in restoring faith in due process and ensuring that justice is served fairly and impartially.
Community engagement, education on legal rights, and prompt investigations into criminal activities are essential steps towards preventing future acts of mob violence.
In the wake of these tragedies, it’s crucial for communities to come together and reaffirm their commitment to the principles of justice and respect for human life.
The senseless loss of lives in Harare and Gwanda should serve as a sobering reminder of the devastating impact of vigilante justice and the imperative to uphold the rule of law.
As investigations continue into both cases, the hope is that those responsible for these heinous acts will be brought to justice, and that communities can heal from the trauma inflicted by these senseless acts of violence.

By Political Reporter- The President of Zanu, PF Emerson Mnangagwa, has confessed to playing a part in destroying the opposition CCC.
In an interview with state aligned “The Third Eye” magazine, the President said he is enjoying the fights in the opposition as that will ensure a weak opponent that cannot challenge Zanu PF.
On his opinion on the factional wars, which have seen the opposition crumbling like a deck of cards, Mnangagwa said, “I laugh and enjoy”.
“Look, I am the head of a political party. If my opponents are fighting, I laugh and enjoy. Why would I bother to say I want a very strong opposition that can challenge me?
“It’s good to have an opposition. Our laws allow opposition, that is why opposition parties are here. They have their internal conflicts and internal difficulties. It’s legitimate to them. They must resolve their problems. They cannot expect Zanu PF to go and intervene and say, ‘Look, you are becoming weaker and weaker, and this is not good for us.’ NO! We will not do that,” said the President.
After losing last year’s harmonised elections to Zanu PF, CCC has been trapped in bloodletting factional wars that have been characterised by recalls from Parliament and local authorities.
Apart from triggering costly by-elections, CCC has since splintered into four notable factions that now seek to access funds disbursed under the Political Parties (Finance) Act
Asked to comment on assertions by opposition officials and their supporters that they have been infiltrated, the President said the solution is just to remove the infiltrators.
“They should remove those who have infiltrated them (laughs). That is the only solution. Just remove them.”
Further, the President said the governing party, which brought democracy and political pluralism to the country after a protracted liberation struggle, cannot pass laws that stop people from holding different opinions or views. “If people don’t understand each other and can’t work together, they will say so. You can’t put a law that says don’t differ (laughs).”
On the international stage, the President railed at the American government for ignoring the genocidal massacre of Palestinians in Gaza by Israel, and then in forked tongues lecture to Zimbabwe about democracy and human rights.
“This is why we have said America applies double standards. This is a clear example of double standards. There is nothing about (abuse of) human rights you can speak of here in Zimbabwe, totally.
“We are a free, democratic country. We allow the opposition and we allow elections. If America wants to know where democracy is practised, they should come to Harare. They should come to Zimbabwe and see democracy in practice.”
Zimbabwe, for daring to correct colonial land inequities, was slapped with illegal economic sanctions by the Western world, which made it clear that the punitive embargoes were a tool for regime change.
Recently, the US made some piecemeal adjustments on the illegal sanctions but the President said that is still unacceptable as they must be removed in toto.
“Well, these sanctions have been placed on us since 2001. It’s now about 23 years on. These sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe are illegal. That is the position also of the United Nations Security Council. Now, the Biden administration proposed to remove some of them and leave some of them on.
“We are saying no. In the first place, they are totally illegal. They must go in totality. We cannot feel that he is being benevolent by removing part of the illegality and leaving part of the illegality on us. The illegality must go in total,” he said.
“These sanctions have been on us for more than 23 years. I don’t think there is anybody in Zimbabwe who is losing sleep over the sanctions. We only get reminded of the sanctions when people talk about them. We don’t feel that we are on sanctions,” said the President.

Liverpool have reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Sporting Lisbon coach Rúben Amorim to replace Jurgen Klopp, who is set to leave the post at the end of the season.
Klopp announced two months ago that he set to leave the EPL giants after nine years in charge.
Amorim emerged as a top target to replace him after it became clear that current Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso will not become available this summer.
According to Sky Sports, 39-year-old Amorim is said to have discussed a three-year contract to become the German’s successor.
However, final terms are still to be agreed with Sporting.
Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha added that Liverpool will meet with Amorim’s agent, Raul Costa, on Tuesday to “outline the terms of an agreement.”
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich and Chelsea have also been linked with Rúben Amorim.

Embracing the Future: The Imperative of Adopting Zimbabwe’s New Currency
By Dr. Masimba Mavaza | The adoption of a new currency involves rigorous regulatory frameworks to tackle issues like money laundering, terrorist financing, consumer protection, and financial crimes. The transition to a new currency, while complex, underscores a country’s economic identity and resilience. For nations within a monetary union, a shared currency symbolizes unity, while others may adopt the currency of a larger nation for stability. Zimbabwe’s decision in 2024 to reform its currency, addressing disparities between official and market exchange rates, exemplifies a strategic move towards economic efficiency and transparency. Such reforms lay the groundwork for macroeconomic stability, enhancing the government’s control over policy by reducing reliance on foreign currencies like the U.S. dollar.
The introduction of the new ZIG currency, despite potential resistance, signals a pivotal shift from traditional cash and coins towards more secure and efficient payment methods. This transition, however, does not negate the value of hard currency, which remains resilient against modern payment technologies. The anonymity of cash, for purposes ranging from everyday transactions to less scrupulous activities, underscores its ongoing relevance. Government efforts to promote electronic money usage aim to curb illicit activities without completely eliminating cash transactions, recognizing the political and economic nuances of withdrawing large denomination bills.
Adopting a new currency brings both opportunities and challenges. On one hand, it promises enhanced industrial and financial prowess for Zimbabwe on the global stage, backed by a gold-supported ZIG currency. This could potentially shift international trade dynamics, offering a viable alternative to the dominant U.S. dollar. On the other hand, the new currency must overcome hurdles like corruption, political discord, and skepticism to gain international reserve status and compete effectively with established currencies.
The manufacturing sector, deeply intertwined with global trade networks, stands at the forefront of adapting to currency fluctuations. The new currency’s impact on foreign exchange volatility demands strategic management to safeguard cash flows in industries reliant on intricate import-export chains. Zimbabwe’s industrial sector, already navigating supply chain disruptions, faces added pressures from currency transitions, highlighting the critical need for trust and acceptance of the new currency for economic stability.
Transitioning to the ZIG currency necessitates comprehensive economic adjustments, moving away from dollar dependency towards a sovereign currency system. This shift aligns with global efforts to reduce reliance on currencies susceptible to external sanctions, aiming for a more balanced and self-reliant economic framework. The persistence of the U.S. dollar in international trade, attributed to America’s robust financial markets and governance, poses a challenge for countries like Zimbabwe seeking to establish their own currency as a viable alternative.
The path to currency reform is multifaceted, driven by factors ranging from hyperinflation to geopolitical shifts. Successful implementation hinges on a collaborative effort between the Reserve Bank, the government, and international partners to establish a currency that is stable, transparent, and widely accepted. This involves a phased approach, starting with sound macroeconomic policies and legal frameworks, followed by meticulous planning, production, and ultimately, the implementation of the new currency. A comprehensive public education campaign, coupled with stringent measures against speculative activities, is crucial to fostering trust and confidence in Zimbabwe’s new monetary era.
In conclusion, the adoption of Zimbabwe’s new currency is not merely an economic necessity but a testament to the nation’s resilience and forward-looking vision. Embracing change, despite inherent challenges, paves the way for a stable and prosperous future, reinforcing Zimbabwe’s autonomy and influence in the global economy.

In a move that signifies President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s strategic restructuring within the ranks of Zimbabwe’s military and diplomatic corps, another key ally of his deputy, Constantino Chiwenga, has been reassigned to a diplomatic role.
This latest appointment highlights Mnangagwa’s careful navigation of internal politics within Zanu PF, as he consolidates power and influences key positions in both the armed forces and diplomatic spheres.
According to a government source, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Martin Rushwaya, recently disclosed the reassignment of former Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) commander, Lt. General David Sigauke, to the position of ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
This move follows a series of similar reassignments that have seen Mnangagwa reshaping the landscape of both the military and diplomatic corps.
The reassignment of Gen. Sigauke is part of a broader strategy by Mnangagwa to strategically deploy military figures into diplomatic roles, potentially reducing Chiwenga’s influence within the armed forces while maintaining a network of loyalists in key international positions.
This manoeuvre underscores Mnangagwa’s determination to consolidate power and neutralize potential threats from within his party.
In response to the announcement, a government insider shared insights into the motivations behind these changes:
“Mnangagwa is tactically pruning perceived sympathizers of Chiwenga from the army.”
This quote reflects the intricate dynamics at play within Zanu PF, where loyalty and alliances are carefully assessed and managed to secure Mnangagwa’s position at the helm.
The reassignment of Lt. General Sigauke signifies a deliberate effort by Mnangagwa to reshape the military’s hierarchy and realign allegiances within the broader political landscape of Zimbabwe.
By strategically deploying trusted military personnel to diplomatic posts, Mnangagwa aims to maintain control over critical institutions while projecting influence on the international stage.
This latest development also speaks to the evolving nature of Zimbabwean politics, where the lines between military and diplomatic roles are blurred for political expediency.
Mnangagwa’s administration is navigating a complex web of internal rivalries and external pressures, and these strategic maneuvers are indicative of the president’s resolve to consolidate power and advance his political agenda.
In summary, Mnangagwa’s decision to appoint Lt. General David Sigauke as Zimbabwe’s ambassador to the DRC reflects a calculated effort to restructure key positions within the military and diplomatic corps.
This tactical maneuver underscores Mnangagwa’s determination to assert control over internal party dynamics and project influence beyond Zimbabwe’s borders.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, these strategic appointments will undoubtedly shape the trajectory of Zimbabwe’s domestic and international affairs.

Massive Copper Heist: Over $300,000 Worth of Copper Vanishes in Alleged Truck Driver Scheme
In a brazen act that seems ripped from a high-stakes crime novel, a truck driver has reportedly made off with 36 tonnes of copper valued at over US$300,000. The consignment, en route from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Mozambique, has sparked a widespread investigation and a fervent call for justice.
The driver, identified as Francis Chipoka of Zambia, was last seen driving the hefty cargo for City Frontiers Transport, a Lusaka-based company, before both he and the copper disappeared without a trace. The company, along with authorities, are now offering a reward for information leading to Chipoka’s arrest, highlighting the gravity of the theft.
According to police reports, Chipoka was assigned to transport the copper using a Howo Sinotruk super-link truck, distinctively white and towing two trailers. The vehicle, equipped with a tracking system, was last recorded making its journey towards its destination before inexplicably being found abandoned in the central business district of Macheke. Strikingly, the truck was discovered opposite Vegono Supermarket, its valuable cargo replaced with empty wooden boxes typically used for transporting bananas. The original consignment documents were left behind, providing a crucial piece of evidence for investigators.
The police, piecing together the truck’s last known movements, noted that it had parked at Knors Petroleum in Marondera along the Harare-Mutare highway, suggesting a meticulously planned route. The investigation has since broadened, with authorities probing whether the copper was removed prior to or after crossing into Zimbabwe, indicating a possible cross-border criminal network.
This audacious theft has not only left City Frontiers Transport reeling but has also raised significant concerns over the security of cargo transportation and the increasingly daring nature of such crimes. With the search for Chipoka intensifying, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, hoping to unravel this complex case and restore a semblance of security to international trade routes.

BULAWAYO Giants, Highlanders thumped new-boys Chegutu Pirates three nil this Sunday to create breathing space between themselves and the chasing pack in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer league.
A ruthless Highlanders side mercilessly wrecked the ship of Chegutu Pirates on Sunday as they thrashed the Chegutu-based Premier Soccer League debutants by three-goals-to-nil.
It was a hard lesson for Dzinza reZaire when they faced the big boys as they were bullied thanks to a brace from Brighton Ncube and another strike from Lynoth Chikuhwa.
While Chegutu Pirates were massacred at Babourfields, Rufaro Stadium entertained a goalless draw between Harare giants Dynamos and Bulawayo Chiefs.
Dynamos failed to capitalise on their home advantage, and to add to their misery, they had a goal disallowed for offside after Kevin Moyo buried the ball in the back of the net.
Not even Tanka Shandirwa’s return to fitness could save the Glamour boys on their home turf as they once again failed to create any meaningful chances.
Elsewhere, Manica Diamonds finally won after edging Chicken Inn one nil, thanks to a Michael Tapera strike.
A solitary strike was again the difference at the Colliery as Hwange could only watch Premier Soccer League returnees Tel One steal their show courtesty of Blessing Sibanda’s goal to cap off the matchday five action.

Former Finance Minister Tendai Laxton Biti has sharply criticized President Mnangagwa’s introduction of Zimbabwe’s new currency, calling it a “farce.”
Biti, who formerly served as Secretary General of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) and was also a vice president of the MDC Alliance, issued a scathing statement on Sunday lambasting the new currency rollout.
Biti remarked, “Introducing a currency is a process. It’s not a one-night thing.
It’s not like you put on a red T-shirt today, then a yellow T-shirt or a blue one the day after… It’s a process because you’ll be trying to build confidence internally.”
Highlanders coach Kelvin Kaindu has noticed improvement in his squad after beating Chegutu Pirates 3-0 in Sunday’s Castle Lager Premiership Matchday 5 encounter at Barbourfields Stadium.
Bosso moved to the top of the table following the victory and are now three points clear, thanks to Brighton Ncube’s brace and a late strike from Lynoth Chikuhwa.
Ncube opened the scoring in the first minute of the first minute of the second half.
He netted his second second of the day on the hour before Chikuhwa sealed the victory three minutes from time.
Speaking after the match, Kaindu said: “Scoring three goals without conceding shows that we are improving with each game we are playing
The gaffer added: “We thought we would get an early goal in the first half but like most teams that come (to Barbourfields) they sit back.
“We were also a bit in hurry in the few chances we created in the first-half that made our game a bit difficult. We made one tactical change at halftime, and I think it changed our game.”

In a recent address, Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe passionately advocated for the complete removal of sanctions imposed on his country, denouncing them as illegal and unjust.
“These sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe are illegal,” Mnangagwa declared, highlighting his firm stance against the economic measures that have significantly impacted the nation’s development and international relations.
He emphasized that this view is supported by the United Nations Security Council.
Mnangagwa directly addressed recent proposals by the Biden administration, stating, “Now, the Biden administration proposed to remove some of them and leave some of them. We are saying no.”
He expressed strong opposition to the idea of selective sanctions removal, asserting, “We cannot feel that he is being benevolent by removing part of the illegality and leaving part of the illegality on us.”
The Zimbabwean leader’s position is rooted in the belief that sanctions are fundamentally illegal and therefore should be lifted entirely.
“In the first place, they are totally illegal. They must go in totality,” he affirmed, echoing sentiments expressed by many Zimbabwean officials and citizens who have long called for an end to the punitive measures.
Mnangagwa emphasized the urgent need for the removal of all sanctions without exception, emphasizing that partial relief would not suffice.
“The illegality must go in total,” he asserted, conveying the uncompromising position of his administration on this critical issue.
Sanctions on Zimbabwe have been a contentious international issue, with supporters arguing they are necessary to encourage political and economic reforms, while critics contend they harm ordinary citizens and impede the country’s development.
Mnangagwa’s resolute demand for the complete removal of sanctions reflects his commitment to advancing Zimbabwe’s economic recovery and fostering stronger diplomatic relations on the global stage.
CAPS United coach Lloyd Chitembwe, has heavily criticised the standard of officiating in the Premier Soccer League (PSL), saying the country’s top-flight league is now a ‘comic show’.
Makepekepe fans invaded the pitch during their league match against FC Platinum at Mandava Stadium yesterday, after assistant referee Mncedisi Maposa raised his flag for offside, denying Ralph Kawondera the equaliser in the 86th minute.
Furious CAPS fans could not wait for referee Lloya Mapanje to consult his assistant and stormed the pitch in protest, leading to a 20-minute stoppage and subsequent abandonment of the match.
Chitembwe was naturally not happy with the offside decision and blasted the level of officiating in the PSL.
“Such has been the problem in our football, where the wrong man takes centre stage. It’s just unfortunate and it has probably reduced this PSL to a comic show and it’s very unfortunate,” Chitembwe told journalists after the game.
“Week in week out, people are always complaining about poor officiating. It’s something that needs to be eradicated from our game if aspire to be a pure football nation.
“It’s very disappointing to see a referee taking centre stage for all wrong reasons. He (the assistant referee) has taken away an aportunity for this boy (Kawondera) to shine.
“That was a contender for goal of the season as far as I’m concerned. This has always been the case in Zimbabwe and I hope it comes to and end,” added Chitembwe.

By Political Reporter-Zanu PF President Emerson Mnangagwa has spoken out on the division he is causing in the opposition.
In an exclusive interview with “The Third Eye” magazine, the President said he is enjoying the fights in the opposition as that will ensure a weak opponent that cannot challenge Zanu PF.
On his opinion on the factional wars, which have seen the Western-birthed opposition crumbling like a deck of cards, the President said, “I laugh and enjoy”.
In the interview, the President maintained Zimbabwe will continue on its engagement and re-engagement drive on the international front while pursuing policies for accelerated industrialisation and modernisation towards Vision 2030.

By Staff Reporter- A building in the central Chinhoyi business district has been burnt to ashes.
The building was burnt after a fire broke in the CBD, destroying wares, including electrical gadgets and furniture, leaving shop and stall owners counting their losses.
An electrical fault is suspected to have caused the fire, destroying television sets, radios, and fans among other items.
Chinhoyi Municipality fire brigade working with members of the community managed to douse the fire but the wares could not be salvaged.
Onlookers said the fire started when everyone in the shop had closed and gone home.
“We first noticed some smoke coming out of the closed shop before the fire broke window panes,” said a man at the scene.
“We had two fire tenders coming through but there was a technical glitch, which delayed the process to put out the fire. The community, including touts had to chip in.”
By Political Reporter- The Mayor of Chinhoyi, Owen Charuza has been involved in a serious accident.
The accident happened this morning near Mapinga escarpment when the mayor was on his way to Harare for council business.

In a dedicated effort to address the challenges posed by climate change, the Limomonane Trust of Lesotho recently took charge of a significant tree planting initiative, underscoring the importance of environmental stewardship in the mountainous kingdom. The event, held in conjunction with government agencies and corporate partners, marked not only a commitment to reforestation but also a celebration of Basotho heritage.
Last week, amidst concerns over El Niño and increasing climatic uncertainties, the Limomonane Trust spearheaded Lesotho’s National Tree Planting Day at the historic Thaba-Bosiu site.
This initiative was a collaborative effort involving the Ministry of Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation, Standard Lesotho Bank, and Vodacom Lesotho, showcasing a unified approach towards combating environmental challenges.
The significance of this endeavor extended beyond ecological restoration; it was a testament to Lesotho’s enduring spirit and its commitment to sustainable practices.
As the country commemorates 200 years of Basotho heritage, the act of tree planting took on a deeper meaning, symbolizing growth, resilience, and a shared responsibility towards the land.
“The Trust remains steadfast in our dedication to climate action through reforestation,” affirmed a spokesperson from the Limomonane Trust.
“By planting trees in the face of pressing environmental concerns, we are actively contributing to a healthier, more sustainable future for our nation.”
The participation of key stakeholders underscored the collaborative nature of this initiative. The Ministry of Forestry, Range and Soil Conservation played a pivotal role in coordinating efforts, emphasizing the critical importance of preserving Lesotho’s natural landscapes. Corporate partners, such as Standard Lesotho Bank and Vodacom Lesotho, demonstrated their commitment to corporate social responsibility by joining hands in this endeavor.
Thaba-Bosiu, chosen as the focal point of the event, holds cultural and historical significance for Basotho people. Against its majestic backdrop, volunteers and participants came together, shovels in hand, to plant saplings and seeds—seeding not only new life but also hope for a greener, more sustainable future.
The use of social media hashtags like #reforestation and #ClimateAction amplified the event’s reach, sparking conversations and inspiring others to take similar actions. Beyond the immediate impact of planting trees, the event served as a rallying call for broader environmental consciousness and the urgent need for collective action against climate change.
As Lesotho navigates the complexities of a changing climate, initiatives like the National Tree Planting Day underscore the potential for positive change when communities, governments, and businesses unite under a common cause.

In a recent incident at Ward 3 Redcliff Urban, St. Batholomeo Anglican Church Polling Station, Zanu PF Councillor Idiraishe Dongo reported a violent attack allegedly perpetrated by opposition supporters.
The councillor’s car, a Mercedes-Benz C200, was damaged when a stone thrown by an individual identified as Emmanuel Ndhlera Macheza shattered the passenger’s window.
Macheza, reportedly from Zvishavane’s No. 15A MaGlass area and known in the Mandava farming market, launched the attack just moments before the voting ended.
“The incident left Zanu PF Party Councillor Candidate Christina Sigauke injured, particularly concerning as she is pregnant and was seated in the passenger’s seat.
The stone struck her below her left breast, causing injury.
Councillor Dongo herself sustained a swollen arm during the attack, “a Zanu PF source claimed.
Speaking out about the incident, Councillor Dongo criticized the opposition’s alleged violent behavior, stating that they have targeted her and her vehicle throughout the day.
She emphasized the hypocrisy of their claims to uphold peace and non-violence.

By A Correspondent| The Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) has said the introduction of a new currency by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has potential to succeed if the measure is implemented transparently and accountably.
In a statement, ZIMCODD believes that anchoring ZiG with reserve assets could offer a lasting solution to Zimbabwe’s currency woes, fostering industrial production, employment creation, price stability, and poverty reduction.
According to RBZ, ZiG replaces the Zimbabwe dollar (ZWL) as legal tender, circulating alongside other currencies like the USD. The currency conversion process involves utilizing the global price of gold and the ZWL interbank rate. With reserves totaling US$285 million, including gold and foreign currency holdings, the RBZ aims to maintain the stability of ZiG’s value.
“It means that from now on, ZiG’s money supply growth will only be limited to the growth of RBZ’s reserve asset holdings, ceteris paribus. So, hypothetically, this arrangement could restrict the ability of authorities to print ZiG willy-nilly. If this holds, the gold-backed ZiG will become a stable currency, thus clamping ongoing rapid dollarization of the economy.
“Generally, gold is considered a safe haven investment during downturns and financial crises because of its long history of use as a store of value. Its properties are helping it achieve this status: malleability, portability, aesthetic appeal, virtual indestructibility, universal acceptance, liquidity, and rarity,” said ZIMCODD.
However, the organisation raised concerns about potential challenges, such as illicit gold trading, which could undermine the accumulation of reserves critical for supporting ZiG’s value.
They stressed the importance of adopting advanced technologies for gold production tracking and monitoring to prevent such leakages.
ZIMCODD called for a comprehensive approach to address economic vulnerabilities, including potential spending pressures on the Treasury amid adverse conditions like global commodity price fluctuations and climate-induced droughts.
They cautioned that any increase in ZiG’s money supply must be supported by sufficient gold reserves to avoid devaluation.
The organization also called for independent audits of gold and USD reserves backing ZiG to build public trust and investor confidence, warning against repeating past mistakes, citing the rejection of bond coins and notes due to discrepancies between issued currency and reported reserves.
To ensure the success of ZiG, ZIMCODD advocated for broader reforms encompassing economic, governance, institutional, and structural aspects.
They emphasized the importance of combating corruption, maintaining policy consistency, and fostering political will to implement robust reform agendas aimed at improving government efficiency and market competitiveness.

I watched this video with the greatest PRIDE as MADZIBABA delivered arguably the simplest explanation of Government’s INGENIOUS and UNPRECEDENTED introduction of the new Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency last Friday.
My DELIGHT is primarily driven by the sense of deep PATRIOTISM that Madzibaba ascribes to our Nation of Zimbabwe, and the importance of embracing our own CURRENCY in order to realize its VALUE locally and abroad.
The Second Republic has RELENTLESSLY shown its commitment to tame hyperinflation and STABILIZE the economy by introducing a GOLD STANDARD, which makes the ZiG currency backed by various precious minerals, predominantly GOLD.
This unparalleled act of BRILLIANCE which leverages on our Country’s natural endowment of MASSIVE gold reserves and vast deposits of PRECIOUS MINERALS is set to instill considerable confidence in the new Monetary Policy initiative.
As “Madzibaba ZiG” aptly explains it, “marrying” our local currency to the international prices of GOLD and other traded commodities on the precious metals market will go a long way towards safeguarding the ZiG from the vagaries of UNJUSTIFIED inflation, mostly driven by market speculations and manipulation by our detractors. With this new currency, Zimbabwe is poised to achieve its 2030 Vision of becoming an upper middle income economy!
As a WELL TRAVELLED businessman, I have come to the realization that what gives any currency it’s VALUE is predominantly the TRUST ascribed to it by its people and CONFIDENCE in the Monetary Policy of a Country.
It his high time as Zimbabweans we EMULATE the pride and patriotism as demonstrated by MADZIBABA in supporting our homegrown solution to stabilize the economy.
A Country’s economy cannot survive on BORROWED currencies or economic and monetary systems that it has no control over.
It is an INDICTMENT upon ourselves as a people and an INJUSTICE to the future generations if we are to continue abandoning our own CURRENCY in favour of foreign currencies whose continued use is clearly UNSUSTAINABLE.
The time and opportunity has now come for Zimbabweans who TRULY have their Motherland at heart to embrace and support this ASTUTE policy, which I believe will revive our economy for the better.
The penchant for critiquing all Government initiatives (no matter how good they are) especially by FAILED and FRAGMENTED opposition outfits must be IGNORED and focus must be turned on building our Nation BRICK by BRICK, STONE upon STONE.
Condemning the Second Republic’s brilliant policies is just the full time job for a FRACTION of opposition stooges, who posture themselves as anti-Zimbabwean and yet “pro-Western” for SELFISH and personal gain. Zimbabwe’s full potential and prowess cannot be held at ransom by the EMPTY conjecture of these few “opposition” figures who have failed to manage the financial affairs of their own DISINTEGRATED political parties but only succeeded in changing their names and identity every other year !
I extend my heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to the Second Republic, ably led by H. E. MNANGAGWA on the introduction of the ZiG, that is truly a stroke of genius.
I equally call upon all PATRIOTIC Zimbabweans to embrace the new currency, as it is the BEST ECONOMIC solution to our yesteryear challenges.

Zanu PF has expelled former Mutare North legislator, Mr Batsirayi Pemhenayi and also suspended its provincial Women’s League chairlady, Mrs Happiness Nyakuedzwa from holding any position in the ruling party for the next two years.

In a bold and unyielding statement, Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has condemned the introduction of the new ZiG currency by Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.
Chamisa, known for his outspoken criticism of the government, minced no words as he expressed his skepticism about the efficacy of this latest monetary policy move.
Chamisa’s criticism of the new currency was unequivocal.
He dismissed it as “useless and ineffective,” highlighting deeper-rooted issues that he believes require urgent attention in Zimbabwe’s political landscape.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Chamisa emphasized that the country needs substantial political reform rather than merely shifting its currency dynamics.
“A currency is a bundle of trust and confidence,” Chamisa remarked, underlining the crucial link between political stability and the value of a nation’s currency.
“A currency is not a currency without confidence and value,” he added, stressing that the current economic woes cannot be remedied by a mere change of banknotes.
According to Chamisa, Zimbabwe’s enduring financial turmoil stems from systemic political failures rather than monetary policy shortcomings.
“Instead of introducing a structured currency, we need a conversation that produces a Citizens-backed structured political change and new government,” Chamisa declared.
The opposition leader went on to assert that previous attempts at currency reform had failed due to underlying political strife. “Currency change has failed before.
And it surely will fail again,” he remarked, referencing the litany of monetary experiments Zimbabwe has undergone in recent years.
Chamisa’s indictment extended beyond the realm of economics to the broader fabric of Zimbabwean society.
He underscored the significance of restoring public trust in the government, emphasizing that “confidence is a product of good politics and good leadership.”
Moreover, Chamisa made a clarion call for comprehensive change, urging Zimbabweans to seek a new direction in governance.
“Zimbabwe needs a political and democratic leadership change, not a currency change,” he asserted, pointing to what he perceives as a crisis of leadership that transcends monetary matters.
In Chamisa’s view, a successful economic turnaround hinges on rebuilding citizens’ faith in their leaders.
“No amount of currency change will pivot the nation into prosperity and boom,” he asserted, echoing his longstanding call for sweeping political reform.
The opposition leader concluded his statement with a resolute appeal for national unity and spiritual reflection.
“Nothing short of a TOTAL CHANGE and seeking the face of Our God will rescue the nation’s fortunes,” he remarked, encapsulating his vision for a Zimbabwean revival.
Chamisa’s critique underscores the deep-seated political divisions and disillusionment prevailing in Zimbabwe.
While the Mnangagwa government’s introduction of a new currency aims to stabilize the economy, voices like Chamisa’s highlight the imperative of addressing foundational governance issues to effect lasting change.
For Zimbabweans, the path forward remains intertwined with the quest for political renewal and reinvigorated leadership.
The Castle Lager Premiership Matchday 5 encounter between FC Platinum and CAPS United was abandoned in the 85th minute following crowd trouble at Mandava Stadium.
The chaos started after the Green Machine had a goal ruled out after Ralph Kawondera was adjudged to have scored the effort from an offside position.
The Platinum Boys were leading 1-0 at the team the game was abandoned. The goal was scored by Juan Mutudza in the eighth minute.
Elsewhere, Yadah lost 2-1 against Simba Bhora in their first match at the Heart Stadium.
Champions Ngezi Platinum’s struggles emerged again after losing 2-1 to Green Fuel.

Last week the Zanu PF leader Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa held another graveside ritual while commissioning the Kamungoma Liberation War Memorial Site…
See statement below :
ZANU PF CYBER TEAM LIVE UPDATES
Commissioning of the Kamungoma Liberation War memorial site in Gutu, Zimbabwe
Address by the Head of State and Government and Commander-In-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces His Excellency Dr ED Mnangagwa
It is my singular honour and privilege to join you today for the unveiling of this sacred site, the Kamungoma Liberation War Shrine, where 105 of our fellow brothers and sisters were brutally killed by the Rhodesian army on the 14th of May 1978.
We are gathered here today in Gutu District, which gave us luminaries of our liberation struggle, notable among them is the Soul of the Nation, the late National Hero and Vice President, Simon Vengai Muzenda.
This particular occasion is in honour of the communities, ordinary men and women, boys and girls, as well as veterans of the liberation struggle, who bore the brunt of the racist brutality by the white settler regime, in our quest for independence, democracy, freedom and self-determination.
Many of our people here in Gutu District and Masvingo Province as a whole were massacred and buried in shallow graves. Occasions such as this one are a solemn reminder to all of us that we must never forget our history.
It is, thus, befitting that as we remember those who perished here at Kamungoma, in a fortnight’s time, we will be commemorating our 44th Independence Day Anniversary in Murambinda, Manicaland Province.
May I now invite you all to rise and observe a minute of silence in honour of our dearly departed. May their souls continue to rest in eternal peace.
Our country experienced a brutal process of colonisation by the British, who oppressed communities in their unbridled quest to loot our resources and make our beloved nation an extension of the British Empire.
In so doing, our forefathers lost possession of their land, livestock and other productive assets, including key heritage artifacts that define us as a people.
The arrogance and disregard of the rights of the black majority were so brute to the extent that Ian Douglas Smith declared he did not believe in black majority rule ‘not in a thousand years’.
Driven by their desire to resist colonial occupation, our forebears waged the First Chimurenga, which saw numerous battles being fought across the country.
In particular, our gallant heroine Mbuya Nehanda, while on death row, remarked “Mapfupa angu achamuka”.
The country subsequently witnessed the upsurge of various forms of resistance, which eventually led to the Second Chimurenga/Umvukela.
The path was not easy for the thousands of sons and daughters that trekked into military camps in Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana, Angola and Tanzania.
The merciless bombings of innocent civilians in refugee camps in Zambia and Mozambique will forever be a painful part of our national history. Lest we forget.
Today, the Kamungoma Massacre is testimony of the extent to which the settler regime wanted to hold on to the governance space and architecture of our country, including pillaging our God-given resources.
‘Isu vana vaMunhumutapa takaramba zvekudzvanyirirwa.’
We are forever grateful to communities, whose political consciousness, clarity of vision and resolve saw us dismantle the white settler regime.
I commend, vana Chimbwido nana Mujibha vedu, who bravely and courageously undertook dangerous missions, including the task of reconnaissance and intelligence gathering to aid our war effort. Ndinokutendai mose.
The 14th of May 1978, remains a dark day in our country’s history as 104 innocent and unarmed civilians, as well as one guerrilla fighter, were killed.
On that fateful day, the liberation war fighters as ‘the fish’ and the people ‘as water’, were at a pungwe drumming up the support and solidarity of communities as well as instilling hope for the imminent freedom, independence and liberation from colonial oppression.
The indiscriminate attack saw teenagers and women, some being breastfeeding mothers, lose their precious lives.
The deceased were buried in shallow mass graves. Many survivors of the callous attack still carry with them the trauma, memories, wounds and pain.
These are the experiences that made us a free people and nation; a sovereign state in the comity of nations. We will never forget. Present generations are challenged to bring forward their knowledge and expertise, in whatever form, towards advancing our national development agenda right from the individual level.
I urge schools and universities, including our general citizenry, to take a keen interest in visiting such important places for a greater appreciation of our liberation war heritage.
We are a resilient people, ever prepared to defend and protect our country.
This spirit must never die. Yester-year we took up arms, today we are building our country in unity, brick by brick and stone upon stone, strengthened by the knowledge that Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevene vayo/ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabanikazi balo.
On Tribalism
We are one people, with one national flag and one national anthem. All of us belong to this beloved country.
Let us say no to regionalism, tribalism and all forms of divisions. This independence was realised because of the unity among our people. Let us protect it.
On El-Nino induced drought
Following the El Nino induced drought, which has led to a poor harvest, yesterday I declared a National State of Disaster.
I once again assure the people of our great motherland, Zimbabwe, that no one will die of hunger. In the days of our liberation struggle, we united against all odds to defeat the colonial regime.
With these remarks, it is now my singular honour and privilege to officially unveil the Kamungoma Liberation War Shrine.
God bless you all God bless Zimbabwe.
I thank you.

In the heart of Southern Africa lies a kingdom that is not only known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage but also for its abundant water resources. Lesotho, often referred to as the “Kingdom in the Sky,” boasts a unique distinction—the wealth of water that flows through its valleys and rivers. This remarkable endowment has led many to equate water with Lesotho’s own precious gem, the diamond.
Lesotho’s annual supply of approximately 780 million cubic meters of water to neighboring South Africa is not just a statistic; it is a testament to the vital role water plays in sustaining life beyond its borders.
However, beyond the immediate benefits of water supply, Lesotho’s water resources hold profound significance in the global context of climate change.
Water is not merely a passive player in the Earth’s climate dynamics—it is a dynamic force that influences and is influenced by climate change.
The hydrological cycle, which governs the movement of water between the atmosphere, land, and oceans, is intricately linked with climate patterns.
As temperatures and precipitation levels shift due to climate change, this cycle is disrupted, leading to profound consequences for ecosystems and human populations.
The impacts of these changes are observable in the form of more frequent and severe weather events. Storms, floods, and droughts—all influenced by alterations in the hydrological cycle—are becoming more prevalent and intense in many regions across the globe, including Lesotho.
Lesotho’s unique position as a water-rich nation underscores its role as a frontline observer and participant in the global climate change narrative.
The water resources that sustain its lush landscapes are not only essential for domestic and agricultural needs but also represent a critical interface between local environmental conditions and broader climate dynamics.
Recognizing the importance of water in climate change, efforts are underway to address the challenges posed by this complex interplay.
Initiatives led by organizations like the United Nations in Lesotho and national development authorities focus on water management strategies that account for changing climate patterns.

How would you rate the customer service efficiency of your business on a scale of 1-10? Are your agents still manually dialing numbers and typing in post-call details? If, yes then your business might be struggling with either of these:
That’s how businesses and customer service reps have been managing things for a long time. What’s changed now? The answer is customer expectations since the digital landscape has progressed by leaps and bounds.
This blog aims to understand the challenges that have been plaguing businesses in this digital age and how a CTI Connector can be just the solution you need to achieve efficiency, agility, and customer satisfaction.
Most contact centers irrespective of their industrial vertical rely on two main technologies to conduct their operations: a telephony system and a CRM. Now, these two systems traditionally exist and operate in silos, making it a task for agents to switch between these two systems multiple times throughout the day.
Why do we call it a task? Let’s see:
As soon as the service rep receives a call, the agent picks up the call via the telephony system but he’s blank on the call. He needs to ask who is calling and for what purpose.
Now imagine a customer who has called multiple times in the past few days, spelling out the same details to agent after agent. Imagine the level of annoyance and frustration!!
Anyways, as soon as the customer spells out details, the agent switches to the CRM system to know more about the customer’s query, meanwhile, the customer is on hold or transferred to another agent.
Now imagine a second scenario where the customer calls in a customer service agent and he receives a personalized greeting followed by a – “ Do you need help regarding the XYZ product you bought last time?”
How did that happen? The answer is a CTI Connector.
A Computer Telephony Integration or a CTI acts as a bridge between your telephony and CRM systems, helping agents save the crucial minutes they spend scourging customer information while switching between multiple tabs. The result:
Oracle is one of the most comprehensive cloud solutions out there and is a reliable choice for a majority of businesses out there. For businesses using Oracle applications, be it the Oracle Service Cloud, Seibel, or Fusion Cloud, the Novelvox CTI Connector can create a cohesive connection of these applications with business telephony, taking operational efficiency and business agility to the next level.
Let’s explore how Oracle CTI Integration can set businesses up for customer success:
The seamless integration of the Oracle Cloud application with CTI creates a seamless connection between the two systems, creating a hassle-free path for agents to cater to customer needs without jumping between too many tabs. All the previous interaction context is displayed on their screens as soon as the customer calls, giving them ample time to pitch the right product, service, or suggestion based on its analysis. This also gives agents more time to focus on strategic tasks or not be stuck with manual tasks day in and day out.
By bringing the Oracle UI and telephony system together, CTI Connectors allow agents to place and receive calls from the integrated interface itself, without having to jump to different systems to place calls or fetch information. Simple one-click call controls lend efficiency to the agents and empower them with the right context they need to resolve a customer’s query in time.
CTI Connector seamlessly integrates your telephony system with the Oracle application interfaces providing a unified communication channel. It helps bring down manual errors and enables agents to handle calls in similar software environments. By filling in the gaps of disjointed interaction channels and manual processes, CTI Connectors lay the foundation for streamlined business processes.
When agents are not caught up in the web of disjointed processes and manual call handling, the customer’s journey also witnesses improvement. Customers are not made to wait for long hours on the other end or just be tossed around from one agent to the next due to the lack of interaction context. All these simplified processes and interconnected processes add to customer satisfaction and contribute to better customer experiences.
Integrating Oracle cloud applications with competitive CTI connector solutions such as the one from NovelVox can render a competitive edge to businesses across industrial verticals by making the agent’s lives easier and contributing to a smoother and more connected customer interaction journey.
Shoot your business productivity to an optimal level by integrating Oracle Cloud applications with your telephony systems via NovelVox CTI Connectors.
Nelson Chamisa’s Blue Movement Outmaneuvers Police in Workshop ControversyIn an unexpected turn of events, Nelson Chamisa’s Blue Movement successfully outwitted the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) yesterday, holding a major workshop in secret while police officers camped at a different location.
The incident, as reported by the Masvingo Mirror, unfolded in Mucheke Hall where Superintendent Elizabeth Chipfakacha and her team were stationed to prevent the gathering of over 130 cluster leaders from across the nation.
The cluster leaders, representing each district along with the movement’s administrative officers, were initially set to convene at Mucheke Hall.
However, upon learning of the police blockade, Chamisa’s loyalists discreetly relocated the venue to Chevron, effectively bypassing the police presence.
The workshop proceeded without interruption, unbeknownst to the officers who spent the entire day at the original site.Sources close to the situation have highlighted that the police’s attempt to bar the workshop was not only unsuccessful but also deemed unlawful, raising questions about the justification behind their intervention.
The police were only made aware of the successful relocation and completion of the meeting earlier today. This incident marks a significant challenge to the authorities by Chamisa’s Blue Movement and underscores the ongoing tensions between opposition groups and governmental forces in Zimbabwe.
Further developments are awaited as both sides recalibrate their strategies in this political chess game.

On World TB Day, as the world focuses on combating one of the oldest and deadliest diseases known to humanity, it’s essential to recognize the intersecting factors exacerbating its spread.
In Lesotho, a small landlocked country surrounded by South Africa, tuberculosis (TB) has reached alarming proportions. With 661 incidents of TB cases for every 100,000 Basotho, the nation grapples with one of the highest TB rates globally.
TB, colloquially known as “consumption” due to its debilitating impact on the body, preys on weakened immune systems, particularly in the presence of HIV/AIDS.
Dr. Llang Maama underscores the critical importance of regular screening, emphasizing that while TB can be remedied, its toll remains devastating.
However, amidst this healthcare crisis looms another formidable challenge: climate change.
The erratic weather patterns induced by climate change compromise agricultural productivity, hindering the production of nutritious foods crucial for bolstering immune resilience.
As Lesotho battles to feed its population amidst unpredictable weather conditions, the vulnerability of its people to TB intensifies.
The symptoms of TB—persistent cough lasting more than two weeks, chest pain, and coughing up blood or phlegm—serve as harbingers of a looming health crisis.
Treatment for TB spans three to six months, owing to the bacterium’s slow growth and replication rate.
Despite the challenges posed by this prolonged treatment regimen, it remains a vital component in curbing the spread of TB.
While community sensitization efforts spearheaded by the Ministry of Health are commendable, they alone are insufficient to stem the tide of TB.
Climate Change Advocacy for Lesotho underscores the urgent need for comprehensive interventions, including access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Adequate waste disposal mechanisms and sewage treatment facilities are imperative, alongside subsidies and financial support for clean energy initiatives.
Furthermore, regulation of quarry mining and robust community-based Environmental Impact Assessments are crucial steps toward mitigating environmental risks associated with TB transmission.
Implementing these interventions not only addresses the immediate healthcare crisis posed by TB but also fosters climate change adaptation.
Access to clean water and improved sanitation not only reduces the spread of TB but also mitigates environmental risks associated with waterborne diseases.
By investing in sustainable energy solutions and regulating harmful industrial practices, Lesotho can simultaneously combat TB and bolster its resilience to the adverse impacts of climate change.
On this World TB Day, let us acknowledge the intertwined challenges of healthcare and climate change facing communities worldwide.
Only through concerted efforts to address both can we hope to alleviate the burden of TB and build a healthier, more resilient future for all.

These strategies aim to enhance resilience against climate-induced water-related risks, safeguarding both ecosystems and livelihoods.
In conclusion, Lesotho’s “diamond of water” symbolizes more than just a precious resource—it encapsulates the intricate relationship between water and climate change.
As we navigate the challenges posed by a warming world, understanding and leveraging the role of water in shaping our climate are essential steps towards building a sustainable future, not only for Lesotho but for the entire planet.

By Baba Jukwa | The Unyielding Cycle of Mismanagement in National Football Affairs.
In a startling reflection on the state of national football governance, the tenure of the Normalisation Committee, spanning a mere eight months, has laid bare the persistent issues plaguing our beloved sport. As we emerge from the shadows of a nine-month ban, the hopes for a rejuvenated and cleanly administered football landscape seem to have been dashed, casting a long shadow of despair across the hearts of fans and stakeholders alike.
Historically, our football terrain has been marred by cycles of neglect, mismanagement, and outright destruction at the hands of successive leaderships. Today, these cycles appear to be repeating with alarming precision, as the same issues that once derailed our national football aspirations continue to rear their ugly heads under the current Normalisation Committee’s watch.
The committee’s efforts, which were initially met with optimism, have been overshadowed by accusations of reverting to old, destructive habits that once saw the football federation captured by a mafia-like grip. This grip, characterized by the hijacking of national team functions, the meddling in player and coach selection processes, and the creation of a nepotistic fiefdom, threatens to strangle the very essence of the game.
Reflecting on the first 10 months of Felton Kamambo’s tenure and his controversial decision to charter a plane for relatives, friends, and pastors to Egypt during the Afcon tournament in 2019, the parallels are striking. This blatant misuse of resources highlighted a governance style that favoured cronies over the grassroots developments desperately needed to nurture future talents.
Fast forward to the period between June 2023 and March 2024, and the Normalisation Committee, stationed at its new headquarters at 66 Bishop Gaul Rd, seems to have succumbed to the same pitfalls. Despite a bold move to avoid the ‘ghosts and demons’ of the past at 53 Livingstone Avenue, their stay has been marred by the rapid embrace of nepotism, corruption, and the exclusion of junior grassroots development programs from the allocation of resources.
The nocturnal appointment of unknown personnel in administrative, coaching, and management roles, along with allegations of bribery and corruption, have sparked outrage among the football community. Social media platforms, particularly those frequented by former footballers, are abuzz with discussions about the circulating list of personnel linked to cronyism and nepotism, further cementing the notion that history is indeed repeating itself.
As the Normalisation Committee stands accused of exacerbating the issues it was meant to resolve, the call for genuine reform and the dismantling of corrupt practices has never been louder. The football fraternity, disillusioned and outraged, watches on as the beautiful game continues to be plundered, begging the question: when will the cycle finally be broken?
By Jane Mlambo| Mbare market has embraced the new monetary measures announced by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor Dr John Mushayavanhu with the local Bond note now trading at par with the yet to be released ZiG currency.
At Mbare farmers market, most traders were exchanging US$1 for ZWL$13 000 while some were still accepting ZWL$10 000.
Previously US$1 was being exchanged with ZWL$6000 but following the announcement by the new Governor, Mbare traders woke up with a new rate which is likely to be adopted by the rest of the country.
By A Correspondent| The newly introduced ZiG notes and coins will only begin circulating from 30 April 2024, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has said.
In a statement last night, RBZ Governor Dr Mushayavanhu said the ZiG notes and coins were presently in production “and will start circulating in the economy on 30 April 2024” to allow the central bank “to undertake an intensive educational and awareness campaign on the key security features”.
“The campaign is expected to reach out to a wide spectrum of society consistent with the Reserve Bank’s financial inclusion thrust,” he said.
