RBZ Rejection of ZiG Throws Currency Plans Into Disarray

By A Correspondent

Amid expectations of a shift to a new national currency, the government’s stance has pivoted back to the US dollar, according to an advertisement for an event featuring Reserve Bank governor John Mushayavanhu scheduled for April 9.

This development, spearheaded by Zimbabwe’s top monetary authority, marks a significant setback for the new currency, effectively undermining its credibility soon after its launch.

The Central Bank governor was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

The advertised event, a USD 100 monetary policy review meeting, will be broadcast by various state-aligned media outlets.

Lesotho’s Liquid Treasure: The Vital Role of Water in Climate Change

By Tebello Agnes Noka

Source: Climate Advocacy for Lesotho

In the heart of Southern Africa lies a kingdom that is not only known for its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage but also for its abundant water resources. Lesotho, often referred to as the “Kingdom in the Sky,” boasts a unique distinction—the wealth of water that flows through its valleys and rivers. This remarkable endowment has led many to equate water with Lesotho’s own precious gem, the diamond.

Lesotho’s annual supply of approximately 780 million cubic meters of water to neighboring South Africa is not just a statistic; it is a testament to the vital role water plays in sustaining life beyond its borders.

However, beyond the immediate benefits of water supply, Lesotho’s water resources hold profound significance in the global context of climate change.

Water is not merely a passive player in the Earth’s climate dynamics—it is a dynamic force that influences and is influenced by climate change.

The hydrological cycle, which governs the movement of water between the atmosphere, land, and oceans, is intricately linked with climate patterns.

As temperatures and precipitation levels shift due to climate change, this cycle is disrupted, leading to profound consequences for ecosystems and human populations.

The impacts of these changes are observable in the form of more frequent and severe weather events. Storms, floods, and droughts—all influenced by alterations in the hydrological cycle—are becoming more prevalent and intense in many regions across the globe, including Lesotho.

Lesotho’s unique position as a water-rich nation underscores its role as a frontline observer and participant in the global climate change narrative.

The water resources that sustain its lush landscapes are not only essential for domestic and agricultural needs but also represent a critical interface between local environmental conditions and broader climate dynamics.

Recognizing the importance of water in climate change, efforts are underway to address the challenges posed by this complex interplay.

Initiatives led by organizations like the United Nations in Lesotho and national development authorities focus on water management strategies that account for changing climate patterns.

These strategies aim to enhance resilience against climate-induced water-related risks, safeguarding both ecosystems and livelihoods.

In conclusion, Lesotho’s “diamond of water” symbolizes more than just a precious resource—it encapsulates the intricate relationship between water and climate change.

As we navigate the challenges posed by a warming world, understanding and leveraging the role of water in shaping our climate are essential steps towards building a sustainable future, not only for Lesotho but for the entire planet.

ZIFA Private Jet And Unending Mismanagement

By Baba Jukwa | The Unyielding Cycle of Mismanagement in National Football Affairs.

Felton Kamambo private jet charter to Egypt… graphic

In a startling reflection on the state of national football governance, the tenure of the Normalisation Committee, spanning a mere eight months, has laid bare the persistent issues plaguing our beloved sport. As we emerge from the shadows of a nine-month ban, the hopes for a rejuvenated and cleanly administered football landscape seem to have been dashed, casting a long shadow of despair across the hearts of fans and stakeholders alike.

Historically, our football terrain has been marred by cycles of neglect, mismanagement, and outright destruction at the hands of successive leaderships. Today, these cycles appear to be repeating with alarming precision, as the same issues that once derailed our national football aspirations continue to rear their ugly heads under the current Normalisation Committee’s watch.

The committee’s efforts, which were initially met with optimism, have been overshadowed by accusations of reverting to old, destructive habits that once saw the football federation captured by a mafia-like grip. This grip, characterized by the hijacking of national team functions, the meddling in player and coach selection processes, and the creation of a nepotistic fiefdom, threatens to strangle the very essence of the game.

Reflecting on the first 10 months of Felton Kamambo’s tenure and his controversial decision to charter a plane for relatives, friends, and pastors to Egypt during the Afcon tournament in 2019, the parallels are striking. This blatant misuse of resources highlighted a governance style that favoured cronies over the grassroots developments desperately needed to nurture future talents.

Fast forward to the period between June 2023 and March 2024, and the Normalisation Committee, stationed at its new headquarters at 66 Bishop Gaul Rd, seems to have succumbed to the same pitfalls. Despite a bold move to avoid the ‘ghosts and demons’ of the past at 53 Livingstone Avenue, their stay has been marred by the rapid embrace of nepotism, corruption, and the exclusion of junior grassroots development programs from the allocation of resources.

The nocturnal appointment of unknown personnel in administrative, coaching, and management roles, along with allegations of bribery and corruption, have sparked outrage among the football community. Social media platforms, particularly those frequented by former footballers, are abuzz with discussions about the circulating list of personnel linked to cronyism and nepotism, further cementing the notion that history is indeed repeating itself.

As the Normalisation Committee stands accused of exacerbating the issues it was meant to resolve, the call for genuine reform and the dismantling of corrupt practices has never been louder. The football fraternity, disillusioned and outraged, watches on as the beautiful game continues to be plundered, begging the question: when will the cycle finally be broken?

New ZiG Notes To Hit The Streets From 30 April

By A Correspondent| The newly introduced ZiG notes and coins will only begin circulating from 30 April 2024, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has said.

In a statement last night, RBZ Governor Dr Mushayavanhu said the ZiG notes and coins were presently in production “and will start circulating in the economy on 30 April 2024” to allow the central bank “to undertake an intensive educational and awareness campaign on the key security features”.

“The campaign is expected to reach out to a wide spectrum of society consistent with the Reserve Bank’s financial inclusion thrust,” he said.

Mnangagwa Says He Won’t Run For A Third Term But Says Amending Constitution Must Follow Procedure

In an exclusive question-and-answer interview with a Zanu PF aligned magazine, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has indicated that speculation that the Constitution would be amended for him to run for another term was misplaced.

“Well, I am very happy that Zimbabweans are very imaginative,” he said.

“They can imagine about anything, which shows there is democracy in the country, you see.

“But we in ZANU PF are very democratic and we obey the Constitution.

“There is not an iota of evidence where ZANU PF or I, as President, has ever expressed the violation of our Constitution.

“But we allow people to dream properly or widely.

“They will still wake up and find things are working and the Constitution hasn’t changed.”

In terms of the Constitution, extending presidential term limits would require amending Section 91 of the supreme law, which disqualifies a person “for election as President or appointment as Vice President if he or she has already held office as President for two terms, whether continuous or not, and for the purpose of this subsection three or more years’ service is deemed to be a full term”.

The Bill containing the amendment must be passed by a two-thirds majority in both the National Assembly and the Senate.

However, Section 328 (7) does not allow an incumbent to extend the period he may hold office.

It reads: “Notwithstanding any other provision of this section, an amendment to a term-limit provision the effect of which is to extend the length of time that a person may hold or occupy any public office, does not apply in relation to any person who held or occupied that office, or an equivalent office, at any time before the amendment.”

In effect, amending Section 91 to extend presidential term limits will apply only to future Heads of State.

Section 328 (7) can only be amended through a referendum, as set out under Section 328 (9) of the Constitution.

The latest interview is the second time President Mnangagwa has publicly pronounced that he will not seek re-election.

In an interview with ZTN Prime on the eve of last year’s harmonised elections, he said: “I am going for my second term . . . this is my last term.

“I believe that my party in particular, ZANU PF, embraces our vision that, first and foremost, the stability of our country depends on us; the modernisation and industrialisation of our country depends on ourselves.

“People from outside can only come and support our programme.”

In the interview with “Brick by Brick”, the President, however, said in cases where governments intend to amend constitutions, due process has to be followed.

“A constitution is supposed to be made by the people of the country,” he added.

“Once you have come up with your own constitution, before you change it, you must comply with what it says.”

Constitutions, added President Mnangagwa, are changed “if you are not happy with what the constitution is saying”.

“The constitution doesn’t make the country,” he continued.

“It’s the country which makes the constitution.

“As long as your constitution is serving you well, keep it.

“If it’s not serving you well, you sit down and amend the provisions that no longer serve the interests of the country.

“We must be constitutional democracies, like ours.”

Nothing To Celebrate On Independence Day…

PREPARATIONS for the Independence Day celebrations which will be held in Buhera are now at an advanced stage, with ongoing works expected to be completed by the 16th of this month.

The 44th Independence Day celebrations are progressing well with Vice President Cde Kembo Mohadi impressed with the progress registered so far.

Vice President Mohadi and some cabinet ministers were on an assessment tour of the venue in Murambinda area of Buhera this Friday.

“Seeing is believing and I am impressed with what I have seen here. Everything seems to be going well. A few touch-ups are left and it’s promising. We have been given an update and we are quite happy with what we have seen here,” he said.

Manicaland Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza gave an update on the progress.

“All is in order and we are happy that we are successfully going to host the Independence celebrations. The main arena has been completed and a few works are left with the changing rooms. Everything is going well. Works are progressing well and by the 16th everything should be done as we wait for the celebrations,” he said.

Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development Honourable Felix Mhona weighed in with a progress report on road infrastructure.

“As construction works continue we have set a target to finish all feeder roads by the 10th of April. Roads at this time are critical for the accessibility of all the facilities to be used on the day of the celebrations. All is progressing well and come the day of the celebrations all will go on smoothly,” he noted.

With most of the major works having been completed, the authorities are confident that this year’s Uhuru celebrations are expected to be spectacular.

Duped USD90,000

A couple has been charged with defrauding Sunday Chifamba, the proprietor of Pandhari Hotel, amounting to a significant loss of US$90,000. The accused, Usedia Zhuwaneti and Edzayi Arufaneti, were presented before the Harare magistrate Ethel Chichera, with Shepard Makonde representing them.

## Circumstances of the Fraud

The prosecution, led by State prosecutor Zebediah Bofu, outlined a premeditated scheme initiated in 2014 by the accused couple. Posing as shareholders of Anglovaal Investments Private Limited, they purportedly owned stand number 761 Glen Lorne Township of 41 of Glen Lorne, with rights allegedly secured under Deed of Transfer 9391/98 via the company. This claim set the stage for their fraudulent dealings with Mr. Chifamba.

In March 2014, swayed by the Zhuwanetis’ misrepresentations, Chifamba entered into a transaction to purchase stand number 761 Glen Lorne for US$90,000. The value of this property was misrepresented as equivalent to 200 shares in Anglovaal Investments (Pvt) Ltd, a claim that significantly influenced Chifamba’s decision to proceed with the purchase.

## Unraveling of the Scheme

The fraudulent nature of the transaction came to light in 2016 when Eelco Alexis Walraven, the actual owner of the property, surfaced. Walraven, who had initially sold the property to Anglovaal Investments in 2011 and reclaimed it due to non-fulfillment of payment terms by Anglovaal Investments (Pvt) Ltd, contested Chifamba’s ownership. The conflict culminated in June 2019 when Walraven secured a High Court order for Chifamba’s eviction from the property, thereby exposing the fraudulent transaction orchestrated by the Zhuwanetis.

## Consequences and Legal Proceedings

The aftermath of the Zhuwanetis’ fraudulent activities has left Mr. Chifamba with a substantial financial loss of US$90,000, with no recoveries reported. The case against Usedia Zhuwaneti and Edzayi Arufaneti highlights the intricate challenges faced in property transactions and the devastating impact of fraudulent schemes on innocent parties.

As the legal proceedings continue, the case serves as a stark reminder of the vigilance required in financial and property dealings, underscoring the importance of thorough due diligence to avoid falling victim to fraud. The legal outcome will be keenly observed for its implications on property law enforcement and fraud prevention measures in Zimbabwe.

Will ZiG Make Desired Impact?

1 Killled As CBD Building Collapses

In the heart of Harare’s bustling central business district, an unforeseen tragedy unfolded that would leave the community reeling and questioning the safety of their surroundings. It was a day marked by sorrow and loss, a vivid reminder of the fragility of life amidst the seemingly steadfast structures that make up the urban landscape.

The intersection of Chinhoyi Street and Bank Street, usually a hub of activity and commerce, became the scene of a harrowing incident. Following the afternoon rains that had swept through the capital, the balcony of a dilapidated building crumbled without warning. Among those caught in the devastating collapse was a young woman, whose life was abruptly and tragically cut short. Six others were injured, two critically, their lives forever altered by the day’s events.

National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi was somber as he confirmed the details of the catastrophe. “I can confirm that one person died when a building in the CBD collapsed,” he stated, his voice a reflection of the gravity of the situation. “Six other people were injured. Two are in critical condition and have since been rushed to the hospital. We will release a full statement tomorrow after informing their next of kin.”

The building, long neglected and in a state of disrepair, had its structural integrity compromised, a fact suspected by many to have directly contributed to the tragedy. Rainfall, a common occurrence yet unpredictable in its effects, is believed to have exacerbated the building’s already precarious condition.

Prosper Murengami, a bystander who sustained minor injuries while attempting to aid the victims, recounted the moment the structure gave way. “It just happened as everyone was sheltering from the rain,” he said, the shock still evident in his voice. His words painted a scene of sudden chaos, a community caught off-guard by the swift hand of misfortune.

Another witness, who chose to remain anonymous, described the horror of witnessing the young woman’s death. “When the building collapsed, it trapped the woman who was walking alongside her companion,” he recalled, the memory haunting. “Despite the desperate efforts by bystanders to rescue her, the woman succumbed to her injuries.”

The man accompanying the deceased woman, now among the injured, serves as a poignant reminder of the indiscriminate nature of such disasters. Their plans, their conversations, their shared moments, all were severed by the tragic event, leaving behind a void filled with grief and unanswered questions.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the collapse, the incident at Chinhoyi Street and Bank Street stands as a stark testament to the consequences of neglect and the urgent need for vigilance in maintaining the safety and integrity of urban environments. The lives touched by this tragedy will forever carry the weight of this day, a day that began like any other but ended in sorrow and loss.- State Media/ Sunday Mail

Chamisa Dismisses ZiG

Tinashe Sambiri

In a bold and unyielding statement, Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa has condemned the introduction of the new ZiG currency by Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.

Chamisa, known for his outspoken criticism of the government, minced no words as he expressed his skepticism about the efficacy of this latest monetary policy move.

Chamisa’s criticism of the new currency was unequivocal.

He dismissed it as “useless and ineffective,” highlighting deeper-rooted issues that he believes require urgent attention in Zimbabwe’s political landscape.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Chamisa emphasized that the country needs substantial political reform rather than merely shifting its currency dynamics.

“A currency is a bundle of trust and confidence,” Chamisa remarked, underlining the crucial link between political stability and the value of a nation’s currency.

“A currency is not a currency without confidence and value,” he added, stressing that the current economic woes cannot be remedied by a mere change of banknotes.

According to Chamisa, Zimbabwe’s enduring financial turmoil stems from systemic political failures rather than monetary policy shortcomings.

“Instead of introducing a structured currency, we need a conversation that produces a Citizens-backed structured political change and new government,” Chamisa declared.

The opposition leader went on to assert that previous attempts at currency reform had failed due to underlying political strife. “Currency change has failed before.

And it surely will fail again,” he remarked, referencing the litany of monetary experiments Zimbabwe has undergone in recent years.

Chamisa’s indictment extended beyond the realm of economics to the broader fabric of Zimbabwean society.

He underscored the significance of restoring public trust in the government, emphasizing that “confidence is a product of good politics and good leadership.”

Moreover, Chamisa made a clarion call for comprehensive change, urging Zimbabweans to seek a new direction in governance.

“Zimbabwe needs a political and democratic leadership change, not a currency change,” he asserted, pointing to what he perceives as a crisis of leadership that transcends monetary matters.

In Chamisa’s view, a successful economic turnaround hinges on rebuilding citizens’ faith in their leaders.

“No amount of currency change will pivot the nation into prosperity and boom,” he asserted, echoing his longstanding call for sweeping political reform.

The opposition leader concluded his statement with a resolute appeal for national unity and spiritual reflection.

“Nothing short of a TOTAL CHANGE and seeking the face of Our God will rescue the nation’s fortunes,” he remarked, encapsulating his vision for a Zimbabwean revival.

Chamisa’s critique underscores the deep-seated political divisions and disillusionment prevailing in Zimbabwe.

While the Mnangagwa government’s introduction of a new currency aims to stabilize the economy, voices like Chamisa’s highlight the imperative of addressing foundational governance issues to effect lasting change.

For Zimbabweans, the path forward remains intertwined with the quest for political renewal and reinvigorated leadership.

Chitiyo Finds New Home

Ronald Chitiyo has joined Malawian side Nyasa Big Bullets.

The winger has signed a three-year-contract contract with the defending champions after spending three weeks on trial.

He reunites with head coach Kalisto Pasuwa after working together at Dynamos FC and the Zimbabwe national team.

Speaking after signing the match, Chitiyo said: “I am very happy to join one of the biggest teams in Malawi.

With my experience, I want to lead these youngsters because I saw that [FCB Nyasa] Big Bullets have many youngsters, so with my experience, I will try by all means to help them. Malawian football is now more competitive than before and the intensity here is high and I am very happy to join this league.

“[On the other hand] it’s a challenge to me because Bullets have been winning before and for me to be part of them it means they should keep on winning.

Harare Wants To Demolish CBD Buildings

Harare City Council Seeks Government Backing for CBD Building DemolitionsIn a significant urban development move, the Harare City Council has initiated a process that could lead to the demolition of some buildings within the city’s central business district (CBD).

This drastic measure follows the council’s recent issuance of a 14-day ultimatum demanding that all property owners and occupants revamp their buildings by making necessary repairs, refurbishments, or repainting to meet council standards.

The council’s push for more stringent regulations comes as they seek to enforce a cleaner, safer urban environment.

The Harare Town Clerk, Engineer Hosiah Chisango, detailed the council’s intentions in a recent interview, stating, “We have written to the Ministry of Local Government concerning the issue, and we are hoping they’ll release a Statutory Instrument to cement the issue, which will then give us authority to withdraw the building license for those who are failing to meet the standard.

“Chisango emphasized the dire state of some CBD buildings, pointing out that over 20 people can be found operating under one roof in facilities no longer suitable for the current occupancy.

“If anyone breaches that, we will withdraw trading licenses or close those buildings,” he warned.

The council has outlined its plan to target buildings along major city roads, including Robert Mugabe Road, Jason Moyo Avenue, and Samora Machel Avenue, among others.

The targeted areas are known for heavy pedestrian and vendor traffic, which exacerbates the safety and health risks associated with dilapidated buildings.“We are doing thorough inspections and we are working with the police,” Chisango added.

“We have noticed now that more than 20 or so people can be operating under one building. Now, the facilities are no longer adequate for the people in that building.

”Furthermore, the council is tackling issues with street vendors, who often spill out from overcrowded buildings, cluttering sidewalks and streets.

“We are doing that for safety issues. And there is this tendency where those people take their wares and display them outside. On that, we are working together with the police to remove vendors on the street,” Chisango explained.

Property owners have been given the option to submit their plans for the required improvements to the council, detailing what they intend to do and when.

This initiative by the Harare City Council seeks to not only improve the structural integrity and aesthetic of the CBD but also to ensure the safety and health of its occupants and visitors.

The next steps hinge on the government’s response to the council’s request for additional enforcement powers, which could redefine the cityscape of Harare’s central district.

Mnangagwa Performs Graveside Rituals Again

Last week the Zanu PF leader Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa held another graveside ritual while commissioning the Kamungoma Liberation War Memorial Site…

See statement below :

ZANU PF CYBER TEAM LIVE UPDATES

Commissioning of the Kamungoma Liberation War memorial site in Gutu, Zimbabwe

Address by the Head of State and Government and Commander-In-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces His Excellency Dr ED Mnangagwa

It is my singular honour and privilege to join you today for the unveiling of this sacred site, the Kamungoma Liberation War Shrine, where 105 of our fellow brothers and sisters were brutally killed by the Rhodesian army on the 14th of May 1978.

We are gathered here today in Gutu District, which gave us luminaries of our liberation struggle, notable among them is the Soul of the Nation, the late National Hero and Vice President, Simon Vengai Muzenda.

This particular occasion is in honour of the communities, ordinary men and women, boys and girls, as well as veterans of the liberation struggle, who bore the brunt of the racist brutality by the white settler regime, in our quest for independence, democracy, freedom and self-determination.

Many of our people here in Gutu District and Masvingo Province as a whole were massacred and buried in shallow graves. Occasions such as this one are a solemn reminder to all of us that we must never forget our history.

It is, thus, befitting that as we remember those who perished here at Kamungoma, in a fortnight’s time, we will be commemorating our 44th Independence Day Anniversary in Murambinda, Manicaland Province.

May I now invite you all to rise and observe a minute of silence in honour of our dearly departed. May their souls continue to rest in eternal peace.

Our country experienced a brutal process of colonisation by the British, who oppressed communities in their unbridled quest to loot our resources and make our beloved nation an extension of the British Empire.

In so doing, our forefathers lost possession of their land, livestock and other productive assets, including key heritage artifacts that define us as a people.

The arrogance and disregard of the rights of the black majority were so brute to the extent that Ian Douglas Smith declared he did not believe in black majority rule ‘not in a thousand years’.

Driven by their desire to resist colonial occupation, our forebears waged the First Chimurenga, which saw numerous battles being fought across the country.

In particular, our gallant heroine Mbuya Nehanda, while on death row, remarked “Mapfupa angu achamuka”.

The country subsequently witnessed the upsurge of various forms of resistance, which eventually led to the Second Chimurenga/Umvukela.

The path was not easy for the thousands of sons and daughters that trekked into military camps in Mozambique, Zambia, Botswana, Angola and Tanzania.

The merciless bombings of innocent civilians in refugee camps in Zambia and Mozambique will forever be a painful part of our national history. Lest we forget.

Today, the Kamungoma Massacre is testimony of the extent to which the settler regime wanted to hold on to the governance space and architecture of our country, including pillaging our God-given resources.

‘Isu vana vaMunhumutapa takaramba zvekudzvanyirirwa.’

We are forever grateful to communities, whose political consciousness, clarity of vision and resolve saw us dismantle the white settler regime.

I commend, vana Chimbwido nana Mujibha vedu, who bravely and courageously undertook dangerous missions, including the task of reconnaissance and intelligence gathering to aid our war effort. Ndinokutendai mose.

The 14th of May 1978, remains a dark day in our country’s history as 104 innocent and unarmed civilians, as well as one guerrilla fighter, were killed.

On that fateful day, the liberation war fighters as ‘the fish’ and the people ‘as water’, were at a pungwe drumming up the support and solidarity of communities as well as instilling hope for the imminent freedom, independence and liberation from colonial oppression.

The indiscriminate attack saw teenagers and women, some being breastfeeding mothers, lose their precious lives.

The deceased were buried in shallow mass graves. Many survivors of the callous attack still carry with them the trauma, memories, wounds and pain.

These are the experiences that made us a free people and nation; a sovereign state in the comity of nations. We will never forget. Present generations are challenged to bring forward their knowledge and expertise, in whatever form, towards advancing our national development agenda right from the individual level.

I urge schools and universities, including our general citizenry, to take a keen interest in visiting such important places for a greater appreciation of our liberation war heritage.

We are a resilient people, ever prepared to defend and protect our country.

This spirit must never die. Yester-year we took up arms, today we are building our country in unity, brick by brick and stone upon stone, strengthened by the knowledge that Nyika inovakwa, inotongwa, inonamatigwa nevene vayo/ilizwe lakhiwa, libuswe, likhulekelwe ngabanikazi balo.

On Tribalism

We are one people, with one national flag and one national anthem. All of us belong to this beloved country.

Let us say no to regionalism, tribalism and all forms of divisions. This independence was realised because of the unity among our people. Let us protect it.

On El-Nino induced drought

Following the El Nino induced drought, which has led to a poor harvest, yesterday I declared a National State of Disaster.

I once again assure the people of our great motherland, Zimbabwe, that no one will die of hunger. In the days of our liberation struggle, we united against all odds to defeat the colonial regime.

With these remarks, it is now my singular honour and privilege to officially unveil the Kamungoma Liberation War Shrine.

God bless you all God bless Zimbabwe.

I thank you.

RBZ Dumps Mnangagwa’s ZiG Currency Overnight, Charges USD for Own Meeting

By Farai D Hove -| At a time when the nation is expected to have moved into a new currency, the government’s authority has shifted back to using the US dollar, if an advert hosting the governor is to be understood properly.

This is the most visual authoritative around currency use in the country because the function is off the reserve bank governor of Zimbabwe himself, John Mushayavanhu on the 9th April.

Assuming this has been a mistake, the very same mishap has totally destroyed, the new currency within days of its launching, because no one is going to value it in anyway, after the soul authority appointed by the constitution of Zimbabwe has rejected it.

A comment from the Central bank governor could not be obtained at the time of publishing.

The function charging USD100, is a monetary policy review meeting being broadcast by various state aligned media houses. Below are the details

Ronald Chitiyo Joins Pasuwa Club

To be playing football outside your country is like an achievement because it’s not easy for people to accept you when you are coming from another country.”

Is Climate Change Fuelling Tuberculosis Cases Rise?

Source : Climate Change Advocacy for Lesotho

On World TB Day, as the world focuses on combating one of the oldest and deadliest diseases known to humanity, it’s essential to recognize the intersecting factors exacerbating its spread.

In Lesotho, a small landlocked country surrounded by South Africa, tuberculosis (TB) has reached alarming proportions. With 661 incidents of TB cases for every 100,000 Basotho, the nation grapples with one of the highest TB rates globally.

TB, colloquially known as “consumption” due to its debilitating impact on the body, preys on weakened immune systems, particularly in the presence of HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Llang Maama underscores the critical importance of regular screening, emphasizing that while TB can be remedied, its toll remains devastating.

However, amidst this healthcare crisis looms another formidable challenge: climate change.

The erratic weather patterns induced by climate change compromise agricultural productivity, hindering the production of nutritious foods crucial for bolstering immune resilience. As Lesotho battles to feed its population amidst unpredictable weather conditions, the vulnerability of its people to TB intensifies.

The symptoms of TB—persistent cough lasting more than two weeks, chest pain, and coughing up blood or phlegm—serve as harbingers of a looming health crisis.

Treatment for TB spans three to six months, owing to the bacterium’s slow growth and replication rate.

Despite the challenges posed by this prolonged treatment regimen, it remains a vital component in curbing the spread of TB.

While community sensitization efforts spearheaded by the Ministry of Health are commendable, they alone are insufficient to stem the tide of TB.

Climate Change Advocacy for Lesotho underscores the urgent need for comprehensive interventions, including access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.

Adequate waste disposal mechanisms and sewage treatment facilities are imperative, alongside subsidies and financial support for clean energy initiatives. Furthermore, regulation of quarry mining and robust community-based Environmental Impact Assessments are crucial steps toward mitigating environmental risks associated with TB transmission.

Implementing these interventions not only addresses the immediate healthcare crisis posed by TB but also fosters climate change adaptation.

Access to clean water and improved sanitation not only reduces the spread of TB but also mitigates environmental risks associated with waterborne diseases.

By investing in sustainable energy solutions and regulating harmful industrial practices, Lesotho can simultaneously combat TB and bolster its resilience to the adverse impacts of climate change.

On this World TB Day, let us acknowledge the intertwined challenges of healthcare and climate change facing communities worldwide.

Only through concerted efforts to address both can we hope to alleviate the burden of TB and build a healthier, more resilient future for all.

Mnangagwa In Another Graveside Ritual

Chamisa Throws Mnangagwa New Money Into Dustbin

Greatman Artistically Introduces ZiG Currency

By Showbiz Reporter | In a delightful display of humor and social commentary, Greatman, the beloved Zimbabwean musician whose real name is Tongai Gwaze, has taken to the digital stage to share his comedic take on Zimbabwe’s introduction of a new currency. The artist, known for his soulful music and engaging personality, cleverly crafted a skit that has captured the hearts and laughter of many, quickly becoming a viral sensation.

The skit begins with an all-too-familiar scene, yet with a twist that only Greatman could provide. The camera pans around a room, seemingly searching for the star of the show. The anticipation builds until, at last, Greatman’s face comes into view. The moment is met with both relief and amusement, as the cameraperson implores him to pay attention, launching into the topic of the day: “Did you hear about the new currency?”

Without missing a beat, Greatman confirms with a staggeringly enthusiastic “Yes!”, drawing viewers further into the jest. The follow-up question aims to test his knowledge, or perhaps to set the stage for his wit: “What does the currency ZiG name stand for?” Without hesitation, Greatman delivers a punchline that is as emphatic as it is humorous, declaring that it means “Zimbabwe has gold” (Zimbabwe ine Gold in Shona), cleverly playing on the acronym while highlighting the country’s rich resources.

This simple yet effective skit not only showcases Greatman’s comedic timing but also offers a lighthearted commentary on national pride and the significance of the new currency. The video, at the time of writing, has amassed over 20,000 views, a testament to its widespread appeal and the joy it has brought to viewers.

Greatman’s approach to engaging with current events through humor is a refreshing reminder of the power of laughter in navigating the complexities of life. As Zimbabweans and viewers from around the world tune in to his skit, the message is clear: even in the face of change, there’s always room for a smile, especially when shared by a beloved artist like Greatman. His playful interpretation of the ZiG currency not only entertains but also instills a sense of national pride, wrapped in the universal language of comedy.

Prof Gift Mugano Hits Back At New RBZ Governor

By Prof Gift Mugano| I still insist that the US$285m is a drop in the ocean.
I listened to the Governor’s response with much respect. However, I would like to argue my case as follows:

  • The submission by the Governor is narrowly focusing on the view that the economy is dollarised. Yes, from a definition of point of view, the economy is dollarised. However, the fact of the matter is that the statistics we are using as indicators of dollarisation such as total deposits in the bank in USD vs ZWL and loans in USD/ZW (which is +96% in USD in terms of loans) are not a correct yardstick of the intensity of dollarisation because the informal sector is not banked – only 20% of the economy is banked. In addition, credit to private sector as a share of GDP is merely 8.8%. In essence, 96% of 8.8% of the economy is the total loans in USD which have been given out by banks. This is small share of the total currency in circulation. Hence, using USD/ZW loan ratio is somehow misleading.

-For argument sake, if the economy is +96% dollarised, why was the rate running away in recent weeks? Is the chaos in foreign exchange market caused by 4% of ZWL? The answer is a big no. Alternatively, are we saying that the national budget which runs into tens of trillions of ZWL plus private sector own budgets in ZWL on constitute 4% of total cash in circulation? No.

  • I believe that there is a significant share of ZWL in circulation which may be in the region of 30% of total currency in circulation as a result of the budget factor. There is so much excessive liquidity which is being pumped into the market by Treasury through payment of contractors and civil servants. In addition, private sector also makes payments in ZWL (e.g., for salaries & services/goods)

-The recipients of the ZWL payments dump the ZWL on the black market with a view to preserve their earnings or secure the USD which is required at passports, fuel stations, ZIMRA, tuckshops, schools, etc. This trend will continue as long as ZiG is not accepted at passports office, fuel stations, ZIMRA, tuckshops, schools, etc.

  • In addition, in his MPS which he presented today, the Governor emphasised that the RBZ has more than 3 times reserves to cover the reserve money supply which is ZW$2.6 trillion (equivalent to US$90 million). He was obviously trying to assure the market that there are enough reserves to meet forex demand. However, his submission is narrowly focusing on money supply as the main driver of the exchange rate volatility which is wrong. Excessive liquidity coming from the budget is the major destabilising factor of the exchange rate instability Zimbabwe.

Again, for argument sake, is our Governor by any chance insinuating that the run away exchange rate witnessed in the last few weeks is it the ZW$2.6 trillion? I would like to argue that the disbursements from the ZW$58.2 trillion budget are a big factor.

Again, the question which arises is that, is the US$285m enough to guarantee demand for forex, that is, for both import and value preservation? The answer is a big no.

  • What I am sure of is that in the coming few days, the Governor will understand that beyond managing money supply, he must worry about excess liquidity from Treasury. Verily, verily, he will appreciate that I am a real economic analyst.

Let me end by asserting that if the budget is in USD, my view that we need at least 6 months on import cover would be invalid. In view of the fact that the budget is in ZWL, we need at least US$4.5 billion in reserves so that anyone who walks in the bank can change money the same way we do in the black market. Crazy as it may look like, it is the only way to kill the black market and restore confidence. Liberalising the exchange rate without allowing people & anyone who want USD to access it from the formal banks, will not guarantee the success of ZiG. In addition, ZiG must be exclusively used at passports office, fuel stations, ZIMRA, tuckshops, schools, etc.

It is my prayer that the Governor will have an open door policy like his predecessor @DrJPMangudya so that we continue the dialogue.

Ndaedza kutaura semunhu mukuru kuti tivake nyika yedu. Nyaya yemari chokwadi yanesa. Tave kufanirwa kuikunda hondo yekuti mari ive nesimba. ZIMBABWE NEEDS POLITICAL CHANGE NOT A CURRENCY CHANGE…

By Nelson Chamisa| A currency is a bundle of trust and confidence. A currency is not a currency without confidence and value.

Money represents a collective trust in the stability and reliability of the government. Its value is derived from the amalgamation of this confidence.

Instead of introducing a structured currency, we need a conversation that produces a Citizens-backed structured political change and new government.

A bond note by another name will not fix our challenges. A currency is a bundle of confidence. And confidence is a product of good politics and good leadership.

Currency change has failed before. And it surely will fail again. All this, because of broken politics, disputed elections and contested national processes.

In recent years, all these currencies failed because of bad politics: ZW$, USD, Bond note, RTGS, ZWL$, Gold coins, ZiG. It is given that the new currency will fail again because of BAD POLITICS.

Currency reforms will not guarantee currency stability but good politics will lay the foundation for currency stability

Zimbabwe needs a political and democratic leadership change, not a currency change.

No amount of currency change will pivot the nation into prosperity and boom.

The citizens have zero confidence in the leader of the country. Once the citizens lose confidence in an administration they automatically lose confidence in all that it stands for or represents. Nothing short of a TOTAL CHANGE and seeking the face of Our God will rescue the nation’s fortunes.#FixPolitics #OnePeople

ActionAid Zimbabwe Criticizes Introduction of Zimbabwe Gold Currency

By A Correspondent| ActionAid Zimbabwe has condemned the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor’s move to introduce the new Structured Currency, Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG).

In a statement ActionAid Zimbabwe said the solution to Zimbabwe’s economic challenges lies in addressing confidence issues not currency.

“While the initiative may be presented as a solution to Zimbabwe’s economic challenges, we believe that what Zimbabweans truly need is the restoration of confidence in the economy, not the introduction of yet another currency,” ActionAid Zimbabwe said.

The organisation added that the country’s history was riddled with currency instability problems, with various currencies introduced over the years, each accompanied by promises of economic recovery but argued that the solutions often fell short, leaving Zimbabweans vulnerable to economic uncertainty and hardship.

“The introduction of the ZiG currency risks repeating the mistakes of the past,” the spokesperson warned. “Instead of addressing the root causes of our economic challenges, it offers a temporary fix that fails to inspire confidence among Zimbabweans.”

The organization called on the government to prioritize comprehensive reforms addressing issues such as corruption, mismanagement, and lack of transparency. They emphasized the need for an environment conducive to investment, accountability, and good governance.

“We urge policymakers to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders from all sectors of society to develop sustainable solutions that will benefit the entire nation,” the organisation added.

ActionAid Zimbabwe reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the rights and interests of the most vulnerable members of Zimbabwean society.

ActionAid Zimbabwe reiterated that what Zimbabweans are yearning for is a fundamental shift towards a more inclusive and equitable economy, further emphasizing that only through genuine reform and commitment to the well-being of all citizens can Zimbabwe truly build a prosperous future.

Mnangagwa Pledges To Feed Hungry Citizens, Will He Manage?

By A Correspondent

In a recent address at the commissioning of the Kamungoma Liberation War Memorial Site in Gutu, President Emmerson Mnangagwa emphasized the importance of national unity in facing the challenges posed by drought.

Amidst concerns over the impact of the El Nino-induced drought on agricultural yields and food security, Mnangagwa assured the nation that efforts to mitigate the effects of the drought were underway.

“We are one people, with one national flag and one national anthem.

All of us belong to this beloved country,” Mnangagwa declared, stressing the need to reject regionalism, tribalism, and other divisive tendencies.

He reminded Zimbabweans that the nation’s independence was achieved through the unity of its people and urged them to safeguard this unity.

“Let us say no to regionalism, tribalism, and all forms of divisions.

This independence was realized because of the unity among our people. Let us protect it,” he urged, underlining the significance of national cohesion in overcoming challenges.

Addressing the pressing issue of the El Nino-induced drought, Mnangagwa acknowledged the adverse impact it had on agricultural productivity, leading to a poor harvest.

Consequently, he announced the declaration of a National State of Disaster to mobilize resources and coordinate relief efforts effectively.

“Following the El Nino-induced drought, which has led to a poor harvest, yesterday I declared a National State of Disaster,” Mnangagwa stated, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing the crisis.

He reassured the citizens of Zimbabwe that measures were being taken to prevent hunger-related fatalities.

“I once again assure the people of our great motherland, Zimbabwe, that no one will die of hunger.

In the days of our liberation struggle, we united against all odds to defeat the colonial regime,” he emphasized, drawing parallels between the unity displayed during the liberation struggle and the current need for collective action to overcome challenges.

Mnangagwa’s speech resonated with a call for solidarity and cooperation in the face of adversity. It echoed the sentiments of resilience and determination that characterized Zimbabwe’s struggle for independence and underscored the importance of unity in confronting contemporary challenges.

As Zimbabwe navigates through the complexities of the drought crisis, Mnangagwa’s words serve as a reminder of the nation’s collective strength and its ability to overcome challenges when united.

In rallying the nation against the threat of hunger and hardship, his speech encapsulated a vision of hope and resilience for a brighter future.

Mnangagwa Dumps Own Currency

By Business Reporter- President Emerson Mnangagwa has dumped the Zimbabwean dollars and replaced it with yet another useless currency disregarding the underlying issues fueling the nation’s economic decline.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, acting on behalf of the government, announced the launch of the “new” currency, ZiG (Zimbabwe Gold), on Friday following a precipitous decline in the value of the Zimbabwe Dollar.

RBZ Governor John Mushayavanhu revealed the particulars of what he calls new currency during the presentation of the 2024 Monetary Policy Statement (MPS) on Friday, April 5, 2024. ZiG notes will be issued in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 50, and 100, with coins available in half and quarter ZiG units.

Mushayavanhu emphasised that the conversion of Zimbabwe dollar balances to ZiG will begin immediately, with a 21-day window for citizens to exchange their ZWL notes for the new currency.

He stated, “I don’t believe in taking people’s money. The ZiG will circulate with other currencies in the basket.” The interbank rate as of April 5, 2024, will determine the conversion rate.

However, individuals holding ZWL$100,000 worth of notes will face scrutiny, requiring them to explain the source and purpose of their holdings.

Key highlights from the Monetary Policy Statement include:

  • The new currency will be backed by reserves and royalties.
  • All ZWL dollar currencies will be converted to ZiG.
  • ZiG will operate alongside other currencies.
  • The multi-currency system will remain in place until 2030 as per existing legislation.
  • All financial obligations will be denominated in ZiG.
  • Banks are mandated to accept old notes for the next 21 days.
  • ZiG notes will come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 100, and 200.
  • 1 ZiG will be equivalent to 6 US cents.

Despite the government’s efforts to stabilize the economy, skepticism remains high, with many questioning the effectiveness of yet another currency intervention in the face of persistent economic challenges.

Luton Town Boss Turns To Nakamba For Survival

Luton Town coach Rob Edwards has admitted that he might have to risk injured players during the final stretch of the season as they look to survive the relegation from the English Premier League.

The Hatters are rooted in the drop zone and played their most recent game against title hopefuls Arsenal with 11 first team regulars ruled out due to injury.

Among the injured stars on the list is Zimbabwean midfielder Marvelous Nakamba, who hasn’t played since December 2023 after suffering a knee injury.

The Warriors international might not feature again this term, but there are chances for other players like Reece Burke, Gabe Osho, Sambi Lokonga, Elijah Adebayo, Chiedozie Ogbene and Mads Andersen.

According to Edwards, he could risk the players with short-term issues and use them in last six games remaining against Bournemouth, Brentford, Wolves, Everton, West Ham and Fulham.

Dealing With Climate Change: Case Study of Lesotho

I Am Ready To Feed Whole Nation, Claims Emmerson Mnangagwa

Chamisa Strikes Again

By Political Reporter- The country’s prominent opposition figure, Nelson Chamisa, has criticised President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa for delaying declaring the El Nino-induced drought as a State of Disaster.

The drought wreaked havoc on crops and pastures during the 2023/24 rainy season.

On Wednesday, April 3, President Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster and urgently appealed for international assistance, stating that Zimbabwe needs more than US$2 billion to mitigate the impending famine.

Chamisa contends that recognising a meteorological drought at the tail-end of the summer season reflects a significant “leadership drought” within the country.

 Chamisa said:

Drought in Zimbabwe has become a perennial challenge evidenced by persistent extreme weather conditions. Poverty, disease, and cholera also characterise our national perils.

These all constitute major threats to our national security. It’s like we’re stuck in a time loop since ’07/’08. This points to leadership failure.

Declaring a state of emergency after the fact is too little too late, lame and lacking. We’ve ignored warnings from experts including the UN, WHO, WFP and our own meteorological teams who gave these warnings more than a year ago.

Our lack of preparedness shows that the drought of leadership and strategy is OUR BIGGEST DROUGHT HAZARD.

We’ve got dams but they’re underdeveloped, silting up with no de-silting plans. We have too many undeveloped dam sites. We lack the right water harnessing and harvesting plans.

The former leader of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) issued a challenge to the Mnangagwa-led administration, urging them to draw lessons from other nations that have achieved food security even in the face of limited rainfall. He said:

Other countries with less rainfall manage better. With the right leadership and proper governance, Zimbabwe would be evergreen. We have a great deal for Zimbabwe- the Green Agenda revolution.

Climate-smart solutions need a proactive strategy, not a reactive policy. Our water systems and land use need effective management for preservation and sustainability.

Declaring disaster late is no solution. Lives have been lost and continue to be lost the policies are floppy, sloppy, slow and weak.

We’re ready to provide the leadership that acts, not react. We must resolve the drought of leadership. Zimbabwe deserves better.

We must fix the broken politics, resolve the disputed elections conundrum, reverse the rigged elections scourge and restore majority rule.

Mnangagwa announced that the anticipated grain yield for the 2023/24 agricultural season in Zimbabwe stands at 868,273 tonnes. However, this falls significantly short of the nation’s food requirements, resulting in a cereal deficit of nearly 680,000 metric tonnes.

New RBZ Governor Exposes Mnangagwa

By Business Reporter- In a startling disclosure, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe has unveiled the country’s gold reserves amounting to 2.5 tonnes alongside US$300 million in cash and other mineral reserves amidst economic struggles.

RBZ Governor John Mushayavanhu made the revelation on Thursday, stating that of the total gold reserves, 1.5 tonnes are securely held within the central bank’s vaults, while one tonne is stored offshore.

This disclosure comes at a time when Zimbabwe’s economy faces significant challenges, prompting public speculation about the potential beneficiaries of such reserves, particularly within President Emerson Mnangagwa’s inner circles.

Mushayavanhu clarified, “I can confirm that we have 1.1 tonnes of gold and other precious minerals in the form of diamonds, which, if converted to gold, will amount to 0.4 tonnes, bringing our total gold reserves to 1.5 tonnes.” He further outlined that the 2.5 tonnes of gold and other precious minerals are currently valued at US$175 million based on prevailing market prices.

Economic commentator Professor Gift Mugano, however, cast doubt on the adequacy of these reserves to support a structured currency, even when factoring in anticipated forex inflows from exports, diaspora remittances, and credit. According to Mugano, the disclosed reserves fall significantly short of providing a sustainable foundation for currency stability, with calculations indicating less than a month’s worth of import cover.
Addressing journalists’ inquiries, George Guvamatanga, the Permanent Secretary for Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, asserted that the Treasury holds an additional US$300 million in reserves, supplementing the RBZ’s indicated figures. Guvamatanga emphasized the necessity of maintaining reserves for the functioning of the government and assured that the combined reserves exceed one month’s worth of import cover.
Mushayavanhu is poised to unveil the much-anticipated 2024 Monetary Policy Statement today, which is expected to introduce a new structured currency aimed at tackling inflation and other persistent economic challenges. Speculation abounds regarding the nature of this currency, with widespread anticipation of a gold-backed system signaling a potential shift toward greater economic resilience.

Leadership Drought Is Zim’s Major Problem : Nelson Chamisa

Zimbabwe needs a CITIZENS GOVERNMENT.

Mnangagwa Finally Dumps Zim Dollar

By Business Reporter- In a move critics are calling futile, the embattled Zanu PF government has introduced yet another currency, disregarding the underlying issues fueling the nation’s economic decline.

Mnangagwa Fails To Impress Teachers, New Currency Rejected

By A Correspondent| The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), has voiced alarm regarding the recent government announcement about introducing a structured currency. They assert that the plan should be deferred until citizens are allowed to express their views on the matter.

In an official statement, ARTUZ highlighted grave apprehensions about the integrity of operations within the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, as well as the Zimbabwean government itself.

“The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ), is alarmed by the recent announcement by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, of yet another mutation of the local currency and mysterious promises of monetary stability.
“Whilst we acknowledge the need for a strong local currency for macroeconomic development, we express serious concern over the lack of integrity in the operations of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion and the government of Zimbabwe.
“As a Teacher Trade Union, we represent a sector that relies solely on monetary transactions and any hiccups in the administration of money is a direct attack on the livelihoods of teachers and other workers in general.
“Our worries over the announced changes in the monetary regimes used in the country are not without cause or justification. Workers, like other users of monetary transactions in the country, have the most horrific historical experiences of livelihoods, savings, and investments, lost in a flash when such monetary changes were made and dubious value accredited to a worthless currency.
“So, it is a very worrying moment for our sector as we risk having our meagre earnings further eroded. Most government workers including teachers are putting their money in social investments such as purchasing and developing residential stands, poultry and goat farming, as a survival tactic in the harsh economic conditions, and all these have monetary value pegged in US dollars, as a store of value.
The recent announcement of a Structured currency conjures memories of eroded monetary value and shattered investments in the past. As ARTUZ we make the following observations and demand urgent clarity on the matter, exchange.
“The Ambush manner of the Introduction of the Structured Currency
“It is our considered view that legal tender denotes that a legal process must accompany the promulgation of a currency that comes into effect. Our research on the matter has revealed that neither the parliament of Zimbabwe nor the Senate had an opportunity of being informed, to contribute, or discuss the introduction of the new currency and its socioeconomic impact, and the law accompanying.
The citizens of Zimbabwe woke up to the announcement in the press of a development which significantly affects their lives, without the benefit of sufficient notice and consultation.
“As a Union we maintain that citizens remain the repository of solutions to the challenges affecting their lives, in their diversity. We demand that sufficient consultations be done and room be given for submissions on the matter.
Confidence plays a key role in the acceptance of any currency and consultations will result in ownership of the currency by the people of Zimbabwe. NOTHING FOR US WITHOUT US!
Multi-currency regime
The government’s position on the usage of different currencies, primarily the US dollar, will be prolonged up to 2030.
“We demand that there be clarity on the matter assuring the citizens of Zimbabwe that the introduction of the structured currency will not interfere with the transactions in US dollars.
“It is a public secret that the economy of Zimbabwe has dollarized and, in some localities, the Zimbabwean dollars are not accepted either as change or for purchases.
“In business as well, government-linked establishments like Innscor refuse to mix local currency with US dollar transactions.
“All these erode the confidence in the usage of a local currency that is not accompanied by solid assurances of value.
“We demand that there be safeguards to protect users from unscrupulous money dealers and businesses that have been bred by economic crises and monetary instability

“The Economy has dollarized. Dollarise Civil service salaries
We demand that all salaries of government workers be pegged to the US dollar to the last cent. All facets of the economy have dollarized and keeping a façade of local currency whose value is not certain, as a component of remuneration for civil servants is hypocritical. The introduction of a new currency should be done where value of earnings is not in dispute and the exchange into another currency fluid.

“Restore the Integrity of the banking sector.

“It is not a secret that a lot of money in Zimbabwe exists outside the banking sector and acts as fuel for monetary speculation in the case of a local currency whose value is not certain.

“Revelations of cash payments of sums like 1 million US dollars in donation as was recently done by Wicknell Chivayo when he donated to ZCC church, the gold mafia revelations of individuals with large stashes of money, amongst other examples point to a contributory factor to the monetary crisis.

“We demand that there be due diligence to force monetary transactions to be done in the banking system and eliminate room for black-market speculation. We posit that this will pave the ground for the effectiveness of a new currency and maintenance of value.

“To this end, ARTUZ calls upon the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and the Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion to suspend the promulgation of the new Currency and give notice, unpack the Structured currency, invite input, and give the necessary assurance to the citizens. As workers tatambura kwenguva refu (we have suffered for too long” and we cannot bear another casino experiment with our livelihoods.

“The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe will continue discharging its mandate of representing teachers, and being part of the citizens collective in fighting for an inclusive education service, economy, social and political environment that allows teachers, workers, and all citizens to live dignified lives. We don’t teach in isolation.

Local Businessman Seeks Protection from Alleged Gold Mafia Threats

By A Correspondent| In a dramatic turn of events, Francesco Marconati, a local businessman, has approached the High Court for protection, citing threats to his life after exposing what he claims to be a well-organized syndicate involved in the externalization of foreign currency through the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe.

Marconati, the owner of several companies including Eagle Italian Shoes and Leather and Strengthened Investments Private Limited, alleges that his life has been in danger since he blew the whistle on the criminal activities.

Marconati’s troubles began after he lodged complaints against one of the directors at his companies for alleged foreign currency externalization.

According to court documents, Marconati has been arrested more than five times since then, prompting him to seek legal recourse for protection.

In his application to the High Court, Marconati is seeking declaratory relief, asserting that his rights have been violated due to his exposé on the criminal syndicate.

He specifically references Article 33 of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, which addresses the protection of whistleblowers.

The businessman claims that the alleged syndicate, led by one of his former business partners, Li Song, has been involved in illicit transactions using his companies as a front.

Marconati alleges that Li Song, along with other individuals, manipulated foreign currency auctions for personal gain, resulting in significant financial losses for his companies.

Despite Marconati’s efforts to seek justice, he claims that the legal process has been marred by delays and frustrations.

He recounts instances where cases he reported against Li Song were either not tried or transferred to different police stations. Moreover, Marconati states that he was falsely accused of fraud by Li Song, leading to a protracted legal battle that culminated in his acquittal, which is currently under appeal.

Marconati remains resolute in his pursuit of justice, despite facing ongoing threats and legal challenges.

His application to the High Court underscores the risks faced by whistleblowers in Zimbabwe and the need for adequate protection mechanisms to safeguard their rights and safety.

Mystery Surrounds Zimbabwe’s Gold Reserves Amid Currency Plans

By A Correspondent| In a startling revelation, Zimbabwe’s Reserve Bank Governor, John Mushayavanhu, has announced that despite the nation boasting 2.5 tonnes of gold reserves, the central bank holds a mere 1.5 tonnes in its vaults.

The whereabouts of the remaining gold remain shrouded in mystery, raising concerns about the fate of the precious resource in a country grappling with economic instability.

Speaking at a press conference, Mushayavanhu disclosed that of the total gold reserves, 1.5 tonnes are stored domestically, with the remaining one tonne purportedly held offshore. However, questions linger over the transparency and accountability surrounding the handling of the nation’s prized mineral wealth.

Economic commentator Professor Gift Mugano cast doubt on the adequacy of Zimbabwe’s gold reserves to support the introduction of a structured currency.

Mugano highlighted that the combined gold reserves and cash holdings, estimated at US$291.8 million, fall significantly short of the necessary reserves to ensure currency stability.

“2.6 tons of gold & US$100m (i.e., US$291.8m equivalent) are a drop in the ocean. Here is the simple mathematics: If we combined 1.1 tons of gold (local) and 1.5 tons of gold (offshore), we have 2.6 tons of gold. If we use the price of gold per ounce of US$2294 as of yesterday, our 2.6 tonnes of gold gives us an estimated value of US$191.8m. Our total reserves are estimated at US$ 291.8 million if we factor in the additional US$100 which has been announced by the RBZ. This year, we are anticipating to import goods worth US$9 billion, that is, US$750m per month. Our reserves (2.6 tons + US$100m) = US$291.8m can only cover 11.7 days of the month if we are not exporting anything. In short, our reserves are not enough to give us at least one month of import cover. Basic economic theory tells us that we must have at least six (6) months of import cover to guarantee currency stability if all things are equal. This is a priori requirement. In our case, we have approx 1/3 month cover! This is not enough to support the structured currency even if we will still receive forex inflows from exports, diaspora remittances, credit,” said Mugano.

Moreover, concerns escalated as George Guvamatanga, the Permanent Secretary for Finance, Economic Development, and Investment Promotion, disclosed that the Treasury holds an additional US$300 million in reserves, separate from the central bank’s holdings.

The revelation underscores the opacity surrounding Zimbabwe’s financial management and raises questions about the discrepancy between reported reserves and actual holdings.

The discrepancy between reported gold reserves and the actual quantities held by the central bank has sparked speculations about potential mismanagement or illicit dealings involving the nation’s prized mineral wealth.

As authorities press forward with plans to introduce a new currency, the lack of transparency surrounding Zimbabwe’s gold reserves casts a shadow over the nation’s economic prospects, prompting calls for greater accountability and oversight.

Hunger, Corruption, and Desperation. A Glimpse into Zimbabwe’s Food Crisis

By Jacob Ngarivhume| In the last week I was engaging and assessing the situation in the country especially with the current hunger we are facing.

I was in Hurungwe district and part of Gokwe Gandavaroyi. I engaged and listened to village heads and villagers.

Their situation is grave. The government through the department of social welfare has been registering a few villagers to receive food aid.

I witnessed several such food distribution exercises by the department of social welfare. What I saw is shocking.

In one village, six villagers were sharing three gallons of maize. What is more painful is the widespread corruption in the state that has really become endemic in the administration of ED and Zanu Pf.

At one such food distribution in remote parts of Gokwe Gandavaroyi, few villagers were registered to receive the food, and 192 bags of maize were offloaded.

Nearly one thousand villagers gathered and only less than 100 managed to receive the food aid. Those who got it were getting two gallons per family.

Very few managed to get a bucket full of maize. At the end 45 bags of maize remained. There was commotion as to whose it was. Those distributing could not explain. The argument continued till night fall.

Hungry villagers stumbled for the food and grabbed it and disappeared in the dark! All of it was looted by hungry villagers and the matter was reported to the police the following day.

In another place I witnessed villagers sharing maize using a tea cup. All signs indicate that we will have severe needs of food this year and the government better start allowing international food aid organisations to start coming through to help.

Climate Change And Tuberculosis : The Facts

Outrage Over Zanu PF Varakashi’s Blasphemous Comparison of Economy with Jesus

By A Correspondent

In a controversial move that has sparked outrage among church leaders and citizens alike, Zimbabwe’s ruling party propaganda team, known as Varakashi, recently made a shocking statement regarding the country’s struggling economy.

On Wednesday, members of the Varakashi group made the audacious claim that the Zimbabwean economy would “resurrect like Jesus.”

The comparison, which likened the economic woes of Zimbabwe to the resurrection of Jesus Christ, has been met with widespread condemnation and accusations of blasphemy.

The Varakashi group, known for its fervent support of the ruling Zanu PF party, attempted to draw a parallel between the eventual recovery of the economy and the biblical narrative of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.

However, the use of such religious imagery to describe the economic situation has been deemed highly inappropriate and disrespectful by many. Church leaders across Zimbabwe have voiced their strong disapproval of the statement, denouncing it as sacrilegious and offensive.

The comparison not only trivializes the profound significance of the resurrection within Christian belief but also overlooks the gravity of the economic challenges facing Zimbabweans.

The country has been grappling with hyperinflation, unemployment, currency instability, and widespread poverty for years, with many citizens struggling to make ends meet on a daily basis.

To equate the eventual recovery of the economy to a divine miracle undermines the need for practical solutions and responsible governance to address the root causes of Zimbabwe’s economic woes. Rather than relying on religious symbolism, there is a pressing need for effective policies, transparency, and accountability from the government to foster genuine economic growth and stability.

Furthermore, the blasphemous nature of the Varakashi’s statement highlights the dangers of mixing politics with religion.

While freedom of speech is a fundamental right, it is essential to exercise sensitivity and respect when discussing matters of faith, particularly in a diverse and multi-religious society like Zimbabwe.

The controversy surrounding the Varakashi’s statement serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding religious tolerance and respecting the beliefs of others, even in the realm of political discourse.

It also underscores the need for leaders to be mindful of the impact of their words and actions on the sentiments of the populace, especially when addressing sensitive issues such as the economy and religion.

The comparison made by the Varakashi group between the Zimbabwean economy and Jesus’ resurrection has rightfully sparked outrage and condemnation.

Such rhetoric not only trivializes the profound religious beliefs of many Zimbabweans but also distracts from the urgent need for practical solutions to address the country’s economic challenges.

Moving forward, it is imperative that political leaders demonstrate greater sensitivity and responsibility in their public statements to avoid causing offense and division within society.

El Niño Scourge : Will Mnangagwa Feed Nation?

By A Correspondent

A visibly nervous Emmerson Mnangagwa has hurriedly taken action in the face of the devastating impact of the El Niño-induced drought on the country’s agricultural sector.

With the 2023/24 summer cropping season severely affected, Mnangagwa has officially declared a state of disaster, recognizing the urgent need for mobilization of resources to avert widespread starvation.

Addressing the nation from the State House in a solemn speech on Wednesday morning, Mnangagwa invoked Section 27, Subsection 1 of the Civil Protection Act (Chapter 10:6) to confront the crisis head-on.

In his address, Mnangagwa emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating:

“Dear Zimbabweans, the foregoing situation of the climate change-induced drought requires measures and interventions as provided for in our laws.

To that end, I do hereby declare a nationwide State of Disaster, due to the El Niño-induced drought.”

He further explained the legal basis for his action, citing the relevant legislation:

“Accordingly, I now invoke Section 27, Subsection 1 of the Civil Protection Act (Chapter 10:6), which provides that: ‘If at any time it appears to the President that any disaster of such a nature and extent that extraordinary measures are necessary to assist and protect the persons affected or likely to be affected by the disaster in any area of the country, the Presidency may, in such a manner as he considers fit, declare that, with effect from a date specified by him, a state of disaster exists within an area or areas specified by him in the Declaration.'”

This declaration underscores the severity of the situation and the government’s commitment to taking all necessary measures to mitigate its impact on the population.

The move comes after the government’s recent initiatives to bolster grain reserves, including the establishment of a purchasing price of US$390 per tonne for surplus grains during the 2022/23 agricultural season and the launch of a grain mop-up initiative.

The President’s declaration has been met with a mixture of relief and apprehension among Zimbabweans.

While many welcome the government’s acknowledgment of the crisis and its commitment to action, there are concerns about the efficacy of the response and the sufficiency of resources mobilized to address the looming threat of starvation.

In response to the declaration, humanitarian organizations and international partners have pledged their support to assist Zimbabwe in dealing with the humanitarian crisis.

However, they stress the need for swift and coordinated action to ensure that assistance reaches those most in need in a timely manner.

As Zimbabwe braces itself for the continued challenges posed by the El Niño-induced drought, the declaration of a state of disaster signals a critical juncture in the country’s efforts to confront and overcome this crisis.

It is a call to action for all stakeholders to unite in solidarity and resilience to protect the most vulnerable and safeguard the nation’s food security in the face of adversity.

Serial Robber Released By Mnangagwa Now Terrorising Women In Masvingo

A serial robber believed to have been released from prison under last year’s Presidential Amnesty is terrorizing women in Chinyika and Chitsa areas under Ward 10 in Gutu.

Over 20 cases have been reported to traditional leaders and Police at Bhasera. He has been stealing electrical gadgets like solar panels, cellphones and invertors when he breaks into homes.

The robber is believed to be living in the mountains and he waylays women along paths and attacks them. Sources said he is a fast runner and he outpaced his pursuers to safety several times.

Just last week he raped, robbed, assaulted and stabbed a woman near Dopota several times.

There are reports that he attacks his targets with stones and rapes some of them.

Chief Chitsa born Nyika Chibvongodze pleaded with Police at the recent launch of the Mbuya Mary Simbi Computer Lab at Makudo Business Centre to launch a manhunt for the suspected rapist.

Chipinge Villagers Take Council To High Court

By A Correspondent| 13 Mahachi villagers who were yesterday convicted by Chipinge Magistrate Alfred Chinembiri are set to approach the High Court to appeal against the conviction and sentence.

Court appeal has been set to contest the sentencing of 13 Mahachi villagers by Justice Alfred Chinembiri of Chipinge Magistrates Court, for allegedly contravening section 24(1) as read with section 24 (4) of the Regional, Town and Country Act Chapter 29:12

The numbers of Mahachi villagers who were summoned before Chipinge Magistrates court started as 406 on their first court appearance on 5 February 2024.

The judgement by Justice Alfred Chinembiri ignored a number of yawning gaps, especially presented by Chipinge RDC, who brought contradictory Rhodesian maps that failed to prove that the accused were staying in a gazetted land . Throughout the trial the state witnesses were either unavailable or irrelevant to the matter before the courts.

It is on this basis that we are convinced a higher court will set aside the matter for lack of any merit

Importantly, the judgement by Alfred Chinembiri, has not given Chipinge Magistrates court any right or obligation to evict the villagers.

The court did not decide on the land ownership but only chose to penalise 13 out of 406 villagers to pay USD 50 fine before the 19th of April. 2024.

The judgement in question has no allocational effect on the villagers as they will continue to stay put as the legal counsel pursue justice at the High Court, which is part of the legal remedies available for them.

Advocate Tariro Tazvitya represents the villagers taking instructions from Professor Lovemore Madhuku.

Kaizer Chiefs Defender Dies

In terrible news Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life on Wednesday.

Fleurs was yet to make his Chiefs debut, having just signed for the club in October last year.

The former SA U23 defender joined Chiefs on a free transfer after being released by SuperSport United. Fleurs’ departure from SuperSport came in rather mysterious circumstances, having just signed a long-term extension. That extension was supposed to fend off interest from Chiefs, which had been eyeing him on a free already. However, in a strange twist, the player ended up being released. Although it seems as if he was always destined to be a Glamour Boy, he was yet to break through.

During the Afcon break, Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson hinted that Fleurs was edging closer to his debut. He was not involved in match day squads in games Royal AM and the embarrassing Nedbank Cup exit to Milford. He then made his first bench appearance for the club in the victory over Golden Arrows. Unfortunately, he did not come off the subs bench to make a debut.

Fleurs tragically killed in hijacking
Now according to multiple reports, Fleurs was tragically killed in a hijacking gone wrong. It is believed that he was shot in the process. At the time of writing, Chiefs are yet to put out a statement on the matter. iDiski Times, however, claim to have got confirmation from a family member of the player about the incident.

Fleurs started his football journey at Ubuntu Academy development. He was then spotted by the watchful eye of SuperSport United. It did not take long for the player to adapt and prove his worth to A Matsatsantsa. Despite his young age, he quickly became a regular and it was then no surprise that he was selected for the SA U23 side for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He would then earn a dream move to Chiefs.

He was just 24 at the time of his death. The South African News would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to the Fleurs and Chiefs family at this time. May his soul rest in peace.

Mnangagwa Announces He’s Launching A Structured Currency Tomorrow, 2 Months After Expelling Chamisa from Politics Saying He’s Unstructured

Said Emmerson Mnangagwa today (Thursday), “Today, I toured and inspected the Reserve Bank’s gold reserves, a pivotal step in backing our new structured currency. This move reinforces our commitment to economic stability and lays the foundation for a prosperous future. #EconomicStability ??”

To describe the new currency, Mnangagwa is using the same term that he just 2 months ago utilised to expell his 2023 election opponent, Nelson Chamisa from politics, “structured.”  Through this, Mnangagwa is declaring that he has for years been a president running an unstructured currency.

The enemies of our currency & the so-called structured currency are:

1. Excessive printing of money & excess liquidity caused by command agriculture; wrong financing model on roads & key infrastructures;
2. A dominant informal sector which is governed by informal rules & has no regard to govt policies – the informal sector has its own governor, mattress bank, minister of finance, etc
3. devastating drought & subdued commodity prices which have a combined effect of reducing availability of USD liquidity

Mnangagwa In Secret Lobengula Grave Rituals

By James Gwati-President Emmerson Mnangagwa has angered the Ndebele tribe after it emerged that he is secretly locating the grave of the Ndebele monarch King, King Lobengula, without consulting his family.

Mnangagwa has since secretly dispatched a government delegation to Zambia, purportedly in search of the burial site of the enigmatic king.

King Lobengula disappeared in 1893, following the Battle of Pupu near the Shangani River, and his disappearance remains shrouded in mystery.

Despite historical accounts, his fate has eluded certainty, fueling speculation and legend.

The battle, a testament to Ndebele’s resistance against colonial forces, symbolized a pivotal moment in Zimbabwe’s history, yet colonial perspectives have long dominated its narrative.

Mnangagwa’s unilateral decision to pursue the truth behind Lobengula’s whereabouts has sparked outrage within the Ndebele tribe, particularly in light of the president’s contentious past.

Notably, Mnangagwa’s involvement in the Gukurahundi massacres of the 1980s, which claimed the lives of over 20,000 Ndebeles in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces, remains a point of deep-seated grievance and mistrust.

The lack of consultation with the Lobengula clan and Mnangagwa’s historical record has amplified scepticism regarding the true intentions behind the grave rituals.

Questions regarding motive and sincerity now permeate discussions surrounding Mnangagwa’s actions, further straining relations between the government and the Ndebele community.

As tensions escalate, Mnangagwa finds himself embroiled in yet another controversy; his efforts to uncover the mysteries of Zimbabwe’s past met with scepticism and condemnation from those whose heritage and history he claims to honour.

Grade 7 Exam Dates Out

By Staff Reporter- The Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) has released the 2024 Grade 7 examination dates.

The timetable by ZimEye has already been sent to schools throughout the country, and it indicates that the first exam date is 23 September 2024.

Schools have also sent the timetable to parents and guardians to share with the candidates.

The timetable comes after the Ministry of Education recently extended the Ordinary and Advanced Level examination fees deadline by two months.

Initially, the deadline was on March 23, and is now the first week of May, a move that provides adequate time to raise the funds.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Torerayi Moyo told legislators in Parliament in March that the Government had taken heed of concerns from legislators and parents, who had said they were failing to meet the deadline initially set by the Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec).

“The official deadline for November examination is March 25, 2024. However, because of the request from Members of Parliament, I have consulted the board of Zimsec and we have agreed to extend the deadline up to the first week of May. If I am correct, it should be the Friday of that first week,” said Minister Moyo.
There has been anxiety and fears that several pupils would not be able to register as candidates due to failure to mobilise resources.
Earlier on, legislators heard that Government had adequate social protection measures on students who were unable to pay tuition and examination fees and also for those at universities.
At primary and secondary level, Government has introduced the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) for disadvantaged learners.
It has unveiled loans for those at State tertiary institutions, administered by financial institutions. Furthermore, “work for tuition fees” programmes have been introduced where those students at universities and colleges unable to pay tuition fees should come forward and work at their institution in lieu of their tuition.
This was said by Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, as Leader of the Government Business in the House, and Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development Minister, Professor Amon Murwira, while separately responding to related questions. There had been concerns that many learners at schools and students at tertiary institutions were being barred from writing examinations over non-payment of fees.
In response, Prof Murwira said payment of tuition fees was inevitable either by the State or by parents.
He said with respect to tertiary education, students should use a loan facility from financial institutions or work for fees at their institutions.
Prof Murwira noted that there had been a low uptake of loans.
“On access to education, education is not free; we have to pay for it. The public has to pay for it or the State.
“However, we recognise that people are differently abled in terms of capacity to pay. We have several programmes for students that include ‘pay for fees’ and about 300 students have benefited.
“CBZ is also providing loans and we have put money for that. It seems people do not want to borrow. There is a low uptake in taking this money,” said Prof Murwira.
He said the university system was automated and it would bar students who were not paid up, hence the need for students to come forward with their plight to authorities for attention.
Minister Ziyambi implored parents to adequately prepare for examination fees on time given that they would have been aware of the pending exams.
“The issue of exam fees has not suddenly become urgent because the deadline is tomorrow.
“The responsible ministry flighted adverts that people can pay in Zimbabwe dollars. Those with challenges must follow the channels and they will get help,” said Minister Ziyambi.
Early this week Zimsec informed parents and guardians that Ordinary and Advanced Level, Grade 6 and Grade 7 examination fees shall be paid in Zimbabwe dollars at the interbank rate.
Parents who wish to pay in US dollars and the South African rand, could still do so.
“Fees are pegged in USD, however they are accepted in the currency which the parents/guardians are comfortable with,” said Zimsec.

ZESA In Tariff Increase Climbdown?

THE Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)has dismissed social media claims that it has increased tariffs.

In an interview with the ZBC News this Tuesday, ZESA’s Stakeholder Relations general manager, Dr George Manyaya said the power utility’s tariffs remain unchanged.

“There has been various articles circulating that electricity tariffs have been increased and it’s now solely in United States dollars. I would want to categorically state that there has not been any tariff increase. The last increase was in December 2023.

However, the tariffs are charged in United States dollars but payable at a prevailing bank rate and our clients can choose what currency they want to use, it is not mandatory to use the United States dollars.”

Dr Manyaya also spoke on the need for the nation to use electricity sparingly.

“I would like to urge our customers to use electricity sparingly so that we conserve our energy. We have several challenges including the depleted water levels at Kariba Dam.”

The government is working flat out to ease electricity shortages with the Hwange Thermal Power Station 7 and 8 expansion project contributing 600 megawatts of power to the national grid.

Pair Nabbed Over Sodomy…

TWO Harare men have appeared in court facing allegations of aggravated indecent assault and kidnapping a 24-year-old man.

It is alleged that the 40-year-old Lionel Chipunza and Edwin Geni (35), took the complainant to their house in Hopley without his consent before detaining and indecently assaulting him.

It is further alleged that they drugged the 24-year-old and threatened to stab him if he called out for help.

The duo was remanded in custody and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Meanwhile, in another case, five suspected South African-based hitmen, who were nabbed last week, have been remanded in custody pending bail ruling on Thursday.

Moses Monde from Johannesburg as well as Malvin Manzinde, Malvin Tatenda Nyamuranga, Norbert Muponda, and Joshua Mapuranga, based in Cape Town were allegedly hired by a businessman to assassinate his rival after a misunderstanding over a US$800 000 deal.

The state is opposed to the five being granted bail, arguing that they are likely to abscond.

In another case, a local Pastor is in trouble for allegedly selling a car he had hired from a congregant.

The court heard that Peter Rego aged 53 broke an agreement with the owner of the vehicle and sold it.

Tanaka Freed

In a recent judicial proceeding, Tanaka Ryan Ziso, a 24-year-old student at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust), faced legal scrutiny for allegedly publishing a controversial statement on social media that disparaged the Ndebele ethnic group. Ziso, who is pursuing his final year in civil and water engineering and resides at the Old Mutual students’ accommodation complex in Selbourne Park, was brought before Bulawayo magistrate Mr. Maxwell Ncube this Tuesday. The charges against him are centered around the accusation of making offensive remarks towards individuals of a specific race.

TAnaka Ziso

The court set Ziso’s bail at US$50, following which he was released. His legal defense is being managed by Mr. Tinashe Tashaya from Sengweni Legal Service. As the proceedings unfold, Ziso has been remanded out of custody, and his case is set to continue through summons, indicating that he will not be held in jail while awaiting trial but must appear in court as required.

The allegations stem from a post Ziso is said to have made on March 13, at approximately 8:11 PM, on his social media page—referred to in court documents as his X-page, formerly known as Twitter—under the username “The Royal Priest of Chitungwiza @iamryantanaka.” In this post, Ziso is accused of broadcasting derogatory views about the Ndebele people. This situation escalated the following day around 2 PM when he purportedly published another post that further inflamed tensions.

Prosecutor Ms. Dorcas Maphosa highlighted that printed versions of Ziso’s social media posts are available and can be submitted as evidence in court. She emphasized that Ziso’s actions, deemed to be offensive towards individuals based on their race, tribe, and place of origin, were unjustified and legally indefensible. The case brings to the forefront issues of freedom of expression and the legal boundaries within which such freedom operates, especially concerning hate speech and its impact on societal harmony and individual dignity.–State Media

Mnangagwa Says UN Will Help Him

The recent declaration of a nationwide State of Disaster by President Mnangagwa, prompted by the harsh effects of an El Nino-induced drought in Zimbabwe, marks a critical juncture for the nation and the broader Southern African region. This distressing situation has compelled the international community, led by the United Nations, to rally in support, with a promise to mobilize over US$2 billion needed to mitigate the drought’s dire consequences.

The prompt response from the United Nations, under the guidance of the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Edward Kallon, signifies a beacon of hope not just for Zimbabwe but for international collaboration against natural disasters. Kallon’s commitment underscores the urgency and the breadth of the crisis, which stretches across vital sectors including food security, health, education, and shelter. The crisis’s multifaceted nature requires a comprehensive and multidisciplinary approach to address both immediate needs and long-term impacts.

This massive mobilization effort is not just about providing immediate relief but is also a strategic move to build resilience against future climatic shocks. The emphasis on enhancing resilience-building and climate adaptation efforts speaks volumes about the changing approach to disaster management—from reactive measures to proactive, anticipatory planning and actions. This shift is critical in a world where extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change.

The allocation of US$5 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCERF) by the UN is a testament to the international community’s readiness to support Zimbabwe in these trying times. This funding, aimed at critical sectors such as water, hygiene, sanitation, health, and agriculture, is just the beginning of a robust response plan that seeks to safeguard human health and security, ensure access to education, and protect livelihoods.

The solidarity and swift action demonstrated by the UN and its partners reflect a shared understanding of the urgent need to address not only the symptoms of such crises but their root causes as well. By focusing on resilience-building and early action, the global community is taking a step in the right direction, acknowledging the importance of preparedness and the need to strengthen communities’ capacities to withstand and recover from future shocks.

In the face of adversity, the pledge from the United Nations offers more than just financial assistance—it represents a commitment to partnership, resilience, and hope for the people of Zimbabwe. As efforts to finalize a comprehensive response plan are underway, there is a clear message that through collective action and international solidarity, it is possible to overcome even the most daunting challenges.- Agencies

Mnangagwa’s Chinese Friends Destroy Graves

By A Correspondent

Allegations have surfaced against the Zanu-PF administration for purportedly granting permission to investors to disturb numerous graves for mining purposes, disregarding both social conventions and traditional values.

According to Farai Maguwu, Director of the Centre for Natural Resource Governance, this move showcases a blatant disregard for the sanctity of burial grounds and the cultural heritage of affected communities.

Maguwu voiced concern over the government’s actions, stating that the disruption of burial sites not only reflects a lack of respect for Zimbabwean customs but also carries significant cultural and psychological ramifications for the impacted families.

This pattern reportedly began in Marange around 2009, where over 3,000 graves were reportedly destroyed to facilitate diamond mining operations.

Similar incidents have since been reported in Penhalonga and Buhera, where graves dating back decades have been desecrated without regard for the families of the deceased.

In Penhalonga, for instance, graves believed to be over 80 years old were recently disturbed, leading to renewed mourning among relatives.

Likewise, in Buhera, approximately 30 graves were reportedly exhumed, causing distress in the affected village.

Maguwu highlighted the lack of preparation and support provided to families dealing with the psychological trauma resulting from these actions.

He criticized the violent nature of the disruptions, likening them to the government’s displacement of people from their rightful land.

However, Zanu-PF spokesperson Farai Marapira dismissed these allegations, asserting the government’s respect for cultural norms and denying any wrongdoing.

This isn’t the first time the government has faced accusations of disturbing burial sites for development projects.

The Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Pvt) Ltd, for instance, is reportedly seeking approval to exhume human remains in the Manhize area to make way for a significant project.

Zimsec Announces Grade 7 Exams Dates

Mnangagwa Publicly Endorses Chivayo Looting

Tinashe Sambiri

In a recent display of apparent generosity, Zimbabwean businessman and Zanu PF affiliate, Wicknell Chivayo, has once again made headlines, this time for donating a hefty sum of USD 1 million to Nehemiah Mutendi’s Zion Christian Church. However, the gesture, hailed by some as philanthropic, has raised eyebrows and drawn criticism from those questioning the source and motives behind Chivayo’s wealth.

Chivayo, a figure synonymous with controversy, has been known for his flamboyant lifestyle and extravagant spending habits, particularly his penchant for acquiring luxury vehicles.

His sudden rise to prominence and seemingly unlimited access to funds have fueled speculations about his business dealings and connections within the political elite.

The endorsement of Chivayo’s donation by President Emmerson Mnangagwa adds another layer of intrigue to the narrative.

Mnangagwa’s public praise of Chivayo raises questions about the extent of their relationship and the potential political motivations behind the endorsement.

Some critics view this as a strategic move by Chivayo to curry favor with the ruling party and gain protection and immunity from scrutiny.

This episode sheds light on the complex dynamics of patronage and cronyism that often characterize Zimbabwean politics and business landscape.

It underscores the blurred lines between legitimate business practices, political favoritism, and corruption, highlighting the need for greater transparency and accountability in both public and private sectors.

Moreover, Chivayo’s ostentatious displays of wealth and influence serve as a stark reminder of the stark economic disparities and inequalities plaguing Zimbabwean society.

While a select few enjoy unimaginable riches, the majority of the population grapples with poverty, unemployment, and lack of basic amenities.

The Chivayo saga also raises broader questions about the role of wealthy individuals in societal development and the ethical responsibilities that come with immense wealth.

While philanthropy can undoubtedly bring about positive change, it should not serve as a smokescreen to conceal questionable practices or exploit vulnerable communities for personal gain.

In conclusion, the saga surrounding Wicknell Chivayo’s donation to the Zion Christian Church serves as a microcosm of the intricate web of power, wealth, and influence that characterizes Zimbabwean politics and society.

It underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to promote transparency, accountability, and equitable distribution of resources for the betterment of all citizens.

Only through concerted efforts to combat corruption and promote ethical leadership can Zimbabwe truly realize its full potential and prosper as a nation.

WestProp Unveils Unique Golf Estate In Harare

By Leisure Reporter- The designs are breathtaking, and the promise of a futuristic golfing estate is incomparable.

The stage is now set for the Hills Luxury Golf Estate groundbreaking ceremony in early May, which is expected to be a grand State event.

With the face of Harare and, more precisely, Harare West set to change, pundits have begun to speculate that the Hills Luxury Golf Estate will be used as the signature feature in destination marketing and city branding.

Just across Solomon Mujuru Drive (formerly Kirkman) is the Liberation City, which is under development and expected to bring much-needed traffic to the area.

The Hills Luxury Golf Estate comes with a PGA standard golf course that will undoubtedly be used as the main course for tours and championship matches as Zimbabweans, especially Harare residents, are fast becoming golf addicts.

The golf course will relieve congestion at the major courses and reduce travelling times for golfers in the suburbs like Mabelreign, Tynwald, Dzivarasekwa, Warren Park, Belvedere and Milton Park, among other nearby suburbs.

Situated west of Harare along Solomon Mujuru Drive and bounded by Sherwood and Harare Drive – the rebranded Hills Golf Estate promises to be the best feature in the city.

Punctuating the green fairways lined by giant baobab trees and other indigenous tree species will be exquisitely tailored villas, premium apartments and penthouses.

It became the second golf estate in Harare after the Brooke.

Modern architecture decorates the built-up landscape that constitutes two palatial double-story penthouses that come with rooftop swimming pools, affording the owners a bird’s eye view of the undulating 18-hole golf course.

The lifestyle estate that combines the live, work, shop and play concept has a shopping mall, medical centre, an old people’s home and different sporting activities like tennis and swimming.

Property developer and WestProp chief executive Mr Ken Sharpe is upbeat with the development and reckons “Harare will never be the same with the picturesque signature development”.
“We have used the best architects and designers and married the designs with our local environment. Our aim is to ensure quality is not compromised. We are bri9nging the best,” he said.
Mr Sharpe said WestProp has a departure point with other developers.
“We are a lifestyle developer. We do not develop and abandon the estate. We stay to ensure standards are always maintained,” he said.

Mafume Breathes Fire Over Rufaro Stadium Reinspection

Harare City Council mayor Jacob Mafume has addressed suggestions that Rufaro Stadium has been suspended from hosting league games due to outstanding issues at the football venue.

The stadium hosted its first set of matches in almost five years over the Easter holidays after receiving a temporary approval by the ZIFA First Instance Body.

However, there were a number of concerns raised, chief among them, lack of functioning turnstiles, which caused long queues outside the venue.

In the Matchday Five fixtures announced by the PSL on Tuesday, Rufaro Stadium was excluded from hosting games this weekend as the venue is set to undergo reinspection first.

Addressing the turnstiles issue, Mafume dismissed the reports, and blamed the clubs instead.

Zanu PF Launches Youth Militia Training

By Political Reporter- The Zanu PF government has reinstated the notorious youth militia program.

Renamed the National Youth Service program, this initiative, notorious for its role in past atrocities, has been revived to bolster the ruling party’s grip on power ahead of the upcoming elections.

Originally instituted at independence, the program gained infamy for its involvement in the Gukurahundi atrocities, where it was instrumental in terrorizing supporters of opposition figure Joshua Nkomo.

Eanerst Kadungure was the first post-independence minister to oversee this notorious group in 1980, and he led the program under the guise of national service. But, it quickly became synonymous with political violence.

State media reports indicate that the militia training program now rebranded as the Youth Service in Zimbabwe (YSZ), is set to recommence this June.

Initial enrollment stands at 750 youth militia drawn from all corners of the country.

With plans to expand its reach, the six-month training program is poised to indoctrinate thousands more into its ranks.

The program’s revival was announced yesterday during a post-Cabinet media briefing in Harare, delivered by Information Minister Jenfan Muswere.

This move marks a disturbing echo of past tactics, as the program was previously relaunched in 2000 amidst the rise of the organized opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

During this period, it was utilised to instil fear and suppress supporters of opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

The resurrection of the youth militia program raises serious concerns about the state of democracy and human rights in Zimbabwe.

Critics fear its revival could pave the way for a return to the era of political violence and intimidation, undermining the principles of free and fair elections.

As Zimbabwe prepares for its next electoral cycle, the spectre of state-sponsored coercion looms large, casting a shadow over the nation’s democratic aspirations.
