Drunken Driver Kills Kids In Accident

The quiet outskirts of Mutare, specifically the Toronto area of Penhalonga, was the scene of a heart-wrenching tragedy that has sparked outrage and grief in equal measure. On an otherwise ordinary day, the lives of three young learners were abruptly ended, casting a long shadow over the community. The accident, involving a speeding vehicle driven by a visibly intoxicated driver along Christmas Pass-Shamu Road, has exposed the deadly consequences of reckless driving and the critical need for stricter enforcement of road safety laws.

The deceased were identified as Blessing Chasarira, nine, Silvian Maponde, thirteen, and Strive Maponde, nine. All hailed from Chirochangu Plot, Toronto, and were the cherished children of a couple who now face the unimaginable grief of losing their only offspring in an instant. Witnesses at the scene described the driver, John Dumbura, as “stone drunk” and driving at excessive speeds, a lethal combination that culminated in this tragedy.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident, stating, “The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a road traffic accident in which three learners were killed… when a Toyota Fortuner vehicle veered off the road to the left and knocked down the learners who were crossing the road.” The community’s sorrow is palpable, with neighbors struggling to console the bereaved families, and an atmosphere of mourning enveloping the area.

The parents of Silvian and Strive Maponde, upon arriving at the horrific scene, were confronted with a loss so profound that words fail to capture their despair. Mr. Gift Maponde, through tears, recounted the moments leading up to the accident, emphasizing the preventable nature of this calamity. “My children… were hit by the car and died on the spot. They are gone,” he lamented, the pain in his voice underscoring the devastating impact of Dumbura’s recklessness.

Eyewitness accounts further illustrate the sheer negligence that led to the accident. Mrs. Primrose Masiiyiwa, a witness, recounted the children’s careful approach to crossing the road, only to have their lives stolen in a flash by the oncoming vehicle. Another witness, Mr. Malvin Makoni, highlighted the aftermath of the crash and the evident intoxication of the driver, reinforcing the community’s outrage and disbelief.

This tragedy underscores a harsh reality: the deadly consequences of drunk driving and the urgent need for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations. The loss of Blessing, Silvian, and Strive is a wake-up call, a grievous reminder of what is at stake when individuals choose to disregard the safety of others. As the community mourns, there is a collective call for accountability and change, for measures that ensure no other family endures the unfathomable pain of losing loved ones to such senseless acts.

The incident not only demands justice for the young victims but also serves as a critical examination of societal attitudes towards road safety and the collective responsibility to prevent future tragedies. In honoring the memory of those lost, there is a pressing need for concerted efforts to enhance road safety, from stricter penalties for offenders to increased public awareness campaigns, ensuring that roads do not become graveyards for the innocent.

Accident: Bikers Killed

Two motorcyclists, each carrying a passenger, perished in a devastating head-on collision in Mutasa District, near London Stores. This incident brings to light the critical importance of adherence to traffic regulations and the often fatal consequences of their neglect.

Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, the Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, offering a detailed account of the events leading up to the fatal collision. “Richard Shorwa (26) was riding an unregistered red Lifan motorbike, while Silent Faro was on an unregistered blue motorcycle. The accident occurred when Faro, emerging from a feeder road, failed to yield to Shorwa, who was navigating another feeder road. This lapse in road safety protocol resulted in a direct collision at the intersection near London Stores,” Chinyoka detailed.

The victims, immediately following the accident, were rushed to Bonda Mission Hospital. Despite the efforts to save them, both bikers succumbed to their injuries upon admission. “Due to the impact of the collision, all parties involved were severely injured and subsequently rushed to Bonda Mission Hospital where the bikers both died on admission,” Chinyoka elaborated, highlighting the grave consequences of the accident.

In his recounting of the event, Assistant Inspector Chinyoka didn’t merely provide a narrative but also seized the opportunity to emphasize the importance of vigilance and responsibility on the roads. “This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder for motorists and cyclists alike to exercise due care and caution when on the road,” he urged, stressing the necessity for all road users to adhere strictly to traffic laws to prevent such unnecessary loss of life.

Parallel to this heartbreaking incident, Chinyoka reported another unrelated but equally tragic accident in Chief Ngorima’s area along the Jopa-Kopa Road. A 48-year-old man, Angirai Ruwa, lost his life when the vehicle he was in, a white Nissan UD80 truck driven by Michael Mhika, carrying pit sand and five passengers, suffered a brake failure. “Upon approaching Kopa Business Centre, where there is a steep slope and a sharp curve, Mhika’s vehicle developed brake failure, veered off the road, overturned once, and plunged into a valley, resulting in Ruwa’s instant death,” Chinyoka detailed.

These incidents starkly highlight the unpredictable and often perilous nature of road travel, underscoring the imperative of preventive measures such as regular vehicle maintenance, adherence to road signs, and cautious driving, especially in areas known for challenging terrain.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka’s reports not only mourn the loss of lives but also serve as a critical call to action for all road users to prioritize safety, thereby honoring the memory of those lost by preventing future tragedies.- Manica Post

Magistrate Accuses ZRP Cop Of Cheating

In a case that may illustrate the complex interplay of personal, professional, and legal spheres, the incident involving police officer Chipo Mukwasi in a Bulawayo courtroom ignites a debate about the fairness and decorum of legal proceedings. The decision by Magistrate Vakayi Chikwekwe, demanding Mukwasi to leave the courtroom and change from her police uniform into civilian attire, raises questions about the inherent values and biases within the judiciary system, particularly regarding the treatment of individuals in uniform.

This article seeks to explore the underlying issues of fairness and justice in the case, examining the implications of the magistrate’s decision and the broader societal and legal contexts in which it occurred.

### Unpacking the Incident

Chipo Mukwasi found herself embroiled in a legal battle after being sued for US$5,000 by Yeukai Pfumbirai, who accused Mukwasi of having an affair with her husband. This lawsuit culminated in a courtroom scene that many have criticized as unduly humiliating for Mukwasi. The demand for her to change out of her uniform not only served to embarrass her but also stripped her of the professional identity that the uniform represents. The act can be interpreted as an attempt to diminish her authority and presence, which is particularly concerning given the respect and dignity typically afforded to law enforcement officers.

The subsequent garnishee order, reduced to US$75 from the requested US$200 by the magistrate, further complicates the narrative. It highlights the magistrate’s discretionary power in legal proceedings, which, in this instance, appears to have been exercised in a manner that some may view as punitive beyond the financial judgment already imposed on Mukwasi.

### The Intersection of Professionalism and Legal Judgments

The magistrate’s decision to have Mukwasi change out of her uniform touches on the broader issue of how legal systems interact with professional identities. Uniforms carry symbolic weight, representing not just the individual but the institution they belong to. The order to remove it, especially in a public and professional setting like a courtroom, sends a message that could be interpreted as undermining the respect and authority associated with law enforcement.

This incident raises critical questions about the balance between respecting professional identity and ensuring that legal proceedings are conducted without undue influence or bias. It begs the question of whether the same demand would have been made of individuals from other professions or societal standings, thus challenging the perceived impartiality of the legal process.

### Legal Proceedings and Societal Perceptions

The fairness of the magistrate’s decision also needs to be analyzed in the context of societal perceptions of law enforcement officers. In many jurisdictions, police officers are held to higher standards of conduct, both on and off duty. This expectation can lead to a heightened sense of scrutiny in their personal lives, which can sometimes manifest in legal settings. However, the principle of equality before the law dictates that individuals, regardless of their profession, should be treated with fairness and dignity in the courtroom.

Moreover, the public nature of the courtroom and the subsequent media coverage of such incidents have the potential to influence public perception of the individuals involved and the legal system more broadly. The handling of this case, particularly the spectacle created by ordering an officer to change attire, could contribute to a perception of the legal system as a space where personal vendettas are settled rather than justice being impartially administered.

The case of Chipo Mukwasi serves as a focal point for discussions about the intersections of personal dignity, professional identity, and legal fairness. The magistrate’s decision, whether intended or not, raises concerns about the potential for undue humiliation and the impact of such actions on the perceived impartiality of the legal system. As societies continue to grapple with the complexities of balancing respect for individual and professional identities within legal frameworks, incidents like these underscore the need for continual reflection on and reassessment of the principles that underlie our legal and judicial processes.

Mnangagwa Okys Starlink

By Business Reporter- The Government, through the Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), said they do not intend to block Starlink’s use.

The Network regulator said that Starlink had expressed interest in operating in Zimbabwe and was provided with all the relevant information to apply.

The state media reported POTRAZ director general Gift Machengete as saying the authority has no intention to block Starlink in any way despite it currently being unlicensed to provide services in Zimbabwe. Said Machengete:

They have expressed interest in offering services in Zimbabwe and have been provided with all the relevant information for them to apply. They have not yet done so.

This means that their service offering in Zimbabwe is illegal because for as long as they remain without a licence.

Some reports claim that the Government wants Starlink to operate in the country through middlemen, a requirement the internet provider reportedly rejected.

Last month, Machengete warned companies illegally advertising and distributing internet services and gadgets from Starlink, which is not licenced to operate in Zimbabwe, that they will be prosecuted.

In February, a Guruve-based Chinese mining company, San He, was fined US$700 by a Bindura magistrate, and early this month, Zambezi Boutique Private Limited, a Victoria Falls-based company, was fined US$500 for unauthorised use of Starlink internet services.

Starlink is currently available in several African countries, including Nigeria, Mozambique, Zambia, Kenya, and Malawi.

Starlink offers several advantages that include high download and upload speeds, availability and reliability in remote areas, weather resilience, unlimited data usage, and portability, among others.

Wicknell Chivayo Faces Backlash for Mocking Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria Over Vehicle Skit

By A Correspondent

The power of social media to amplify both admiration and criticism has once again come to the forefront, with controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo finding himself under fire for his recent comments directed at popular musician Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria.

The incident in question revolves around a vehicle skit featuring Zakaria, where he humorously complains about his car troubles.

However, Chivayo’s response to the skit has sparked controversy and drawn widespread condemnation.

In a Facebook post, Chivayo appeared to mock Zakaria, suggesting that the musician was indirectly soliciting a motor vehicle from him.

The post, laden with sarcasm, implied that Zakaria’s comedic portrayal of car problems was a veiled request for assistance from Chivayo, who is known for his extravagant purchases of vehicles for musicians and public figures.

Chivayo’s remarks, however, have been met with swift backlash from social media users and fans of Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria.

Many have accused Chivayo of insensitivity and arrogance, arguing that his response was disrespectful to Zakaria and lacked empathy for the challenges faced by ordinary individuals.

Critics have pointed out that Chivayo’s flaunting of his wealth and influence, coupled with his dismissive attitude towards Zakaria’s skit, reflects a broader culture of entitlement and elitism.

The implication that Zakaria should be grateful for any potential assistance from Chivayo has struck a nerve among those who believe in the importance of humility and respect for others, regardless of their social status.

Moreover, Chivayo’s assertion that he owes nothing to anyone and can do as he pleases with his wealth has only served to fuel the controversy.

Some have interpreted his comments as a display of arrogance and a lack of accountability, particularly in light of his past legal and financial troubles.

In response to the backlash, supporters of Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria have rallied behind the musician, praising his talent and contributions to Zimbabwean culture.

Many have condemned Chivayo’s behavior as unbecoming of a public figure and have called for greater sensitivity and responsibility in the use of social media.

As the controversy continues to unfold, it serves as a reminder of the power dynamics at play in Zimbabwean society and the importance of holding individuals in positions of influence accountable for their words and actions. While social media platforms provide a platform for expression and engagement, they also carry the responsibility of promoting positive discourse and respectful interaction among users.

In the end, the incident involving Wicknell Chivayo and Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria serves as a cautionary tale about the potential pitfalls of online communication and the need for empathy, humility, and mutual respect in our interactions with others, both online and offline.

See Chivayo’s full statement below…

Outrage As Zanu PF, Chivhayo Pampers Convicted Murewa Rapist

By A Correspondent| In a shocking turn of events, Zanu PF, the ruling party in Zimbabwe, is facing severe criticism for rewarding a convicted child rapist, Bobby Makaza, with extravagant gifts.

The controversy deepened when it was revealed that prominent businessman Sir Wicknell Chivayo had gifted Makaza a vehicle.

Makaza’s heinous crime shook the nation in 2018 when he was found guilty of raping a 10-year-old child. Despite being sentenced to 18 years in prison, Makaza’s punishment was drastically reduced after President Mnangagwa granted him a pardon, allowing him to serve only three years of his sentence.

Adding fuel to the fire, Zanu PF, during a presidential rally in Mutawatawa, Mashonaland East province in 2023, presented Makaza with a house and a significant sum of cash.

The gesture has sparked outrage among Zimbabweans, with many questioning the ethics and morality behind rewarding a convicted rapist.

Critics argue that such actions not only undermine the severity of Makaza’s crime but also send a dangerous message to society, potentially normalizing sexual violence and perpetuating a culture of impunity.

Furthermore, Sir Wicknell Chivayo’s involvement in gifting Makaza a vehicle has drawn scrutiny, with some questioning the ethical implications of supporting a convicted criminal in such a manner.

UK Targets Foreign Students After Down-Grading Some University Of Zambia Degrees

London- The UK government has announced its intention to revise the international students’ visa because what it said is meant to close the loopholes of the potential abuse of the visa by foreign students.

This move came a few days after the same government downgraded the University of Zambia graduates’ degrees for the High Potential Individuals (HPI) visa due to the perceived inferiority of their degrees.

The HPI visa is designed to attract “highly skilled graduates” from international universities outside of the UK to contribute to a range of sectors, such as science and technology.

The Guardian Wednesday reported that UK Home Secretary James Cleverly said international students may be “undermining the integrity and quality of the UK higher education system” by using university courses as a cheap way of getting work visas.

In a letter to the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), Cleverly asked the body to investigate whether the graduate visa entitlement – allowing international students to work for two or three years after graduating – was failing to attract “the brightest and the best” to the UK.

However, university leaders fear that cutting or restricting the graduate visa route will lead to a drastic fall in international recruitment and provoke a financial crisis for universities that rely on income from international tuition fees.

Cleverly told the MAC that while the government was committed to attracting “talented students from around the world to study in the UK”, it also wanted “to ensure the graduate route is not being abused. In particular, that some of the demand for study visas is not being driven more by a desire for immigration”.

Cleverly said: “An international student can spend relatively little on fees for a one-year course and gain access to two years with no job requirement on the graduate route, followed by four years’ access to a discounted salary threshold on the skilled worker route.

“This means international graduates are able to access the UK labour market with salaries significantly below the requirement imposed on the majority of migrant skilled workers.”

The home secretary instructed the committee, which gives independent advice to the government, to investigate “any evidence of abuse” of the graduate route, “including the route not being fit for purpose”, and to look at which universities were producing graduates who used the route.

He also asked the MAC to analyse “whether the graduate route is undermining the integrity and quality of the UK higher education system, including understanding how the graduate route is or is not, effectively controlling for the quality of international students, such that it is genuinely supporting the UK to attract and retain the brightest and the best, contributing to economic growth and benefiting British higher education”.

Rachel Hewitt, the chief executive of the MillionPlus group of universities, said the government’s review appeared to be deliberately aimed at undermining the success of British higher education.

“It is impossible to imagine the government going out of its way to make Britain less inviting to investment in almost any other sector – and yet every negative headline and policy reform makes Britain less attractive to international students,” Hewitt said.

“The graduate route is a key component of the offer that UK universities can make to international applicants, and its value should be recognised and not eroded.”

Jamie Arrowsmith, the director of Universities UK International, said universities were “deeply concerned” by the short notice given by Cleverly.

“Post-study work matters for many international students, allowing those who have invested in our country the opportunity to find work and contribute to the UK economy,” said Arrowsmith.

“Having publicly recommitted to the graduate route on its current terms in May 2023, any further changes would be extremely damaging to our reputation as a welcoming destination for international students, and risks undermining a UK success story that generates more than £20bn a year in export earnings for the economy.”

Cleverly said “early data” showed that just 23% of international students using the skilled workers route moved into graduate-level jobs, and that last year only a third moved into jobs paying more than £26,000 a year.

The committee is expected to report back in May, and its findings could come at a difficult time for the higher education sector. So far this year, enrolments from overseas have fallen by 40% compared with 2023.

Vanessa Wilson, chief executive of the University Alliance group, said: “It is important that international students have the opportunity to study at the full range of UK universities so they can select the option that is right for them, and so that all UK students and regions can benefit from their contributions.”

Tropical Storm Filipo Causes Havoc in Mozambique | ARE YOU SAFE?

By Farai D Hove | ZimEye | Maputo, Mozambique – In the early hours of March 12, Tropical Storm Filipo made a devastating landfall in Mozambique, directly hitting the Inhassoro City area in the northern part of Inhambane Province. With fierce maximum sustained winds reaching up to 116 km/h, the storm unleashed its fury on the region, impacting thousands and causing significant damage to infrastructure.

Mozambique’s National Institute for Disaster Management and Reduction (INGD) has been at the forefront, responding to the aftermath of Filipo’s rage. Initial reports from the INGD confirm that approximately 2,780 individuals have been directly affected by the storm, with seven reported injuries in the districts of Vilankulo and Morrumbene. The structural toll includes 12 houses obliterated and over 510 houses, alongside 14 health centres and 6 schools, sustaining damage.

Gaza Province also felt Filipo’s touch, albeit with minor damages, as assessments continue to determine the full extent of the impact. To support those displaced or adversely affected, authorities have set up three accommodation centres, currently sheltering 43 individuals.

Filipo, showing no signs of weakening, is predicted to journey across the southern Indian Ocean, veering off the coastlines of southern Mozambique and northern South Africa from March 13 to 15. Meteorologists anticipate it will intensify into a tropical cyclone, boasting maximum sustained winds of 135 km/h.

The coming 48 hours spell an anxious period for the region, with forecasts predicting heavy rainfall, strong winds, and storm surges. These adverse weather conditions are expected to affect Gaza and Maputo provinces in Mozambique, the entirety of Eswatini, and parts of northeastern South Africa.

Authorities and disaster management teams urge the public to stay informed, adhere to safety guidelines, and prepare for the expected conditions. The INGD, alongside local and international partners, is mobilizing resources and support to mitigate the storm’s impact and aid in the recovery of the affected communities.

As Tropical Storm Filipo continues its path, updates will be provided to keep the public informed and prepared for any developments.- ZimEye

Armed Cops Round-Up, Arrest Notorious Apostolic Cult Leader

By Crime and Courts Reporter- Heavily armed police details have raided and arrested Madzibaba Ishmael Chokurongerwa at his farm in Nyabira.

Armed with guns, tear smoke and accompanied by sniffer dogs, the police staged a spectacular in the early hours of Tuesday and arrested the cult leader.

The police officers raided the compound, which housed more than 1 000 people, and has been described as a cult where the majority of the people are being abused.

The residents of the compound were awakened at around 4am.

They led the police officers to Madzibaba Ishmael’s shrine where they were interviewed about concerns that have been raised about the captivity at the compound.

Those who live at the compound describe it as their Promised Land.

The police officers were accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Nyabira Rural District Council, Registrar General’s Office and the Department of Social Welfare.

The scores of children at the compound were put into different groups according to their ages.

Virtually all the children said they did not have birth certificates and did not go to school because they were not allowed to do so.

It quickly became clear that the children have been indoctrinated to live a life which is different from the one lived by millions of children around the country.

Health, Victim Friendly Unit and Social Welfare officials took their time to interview different women and children about allegations of abuse at the compound and all of them said they were not aware of such abuse and they have never been subjected to any form of abuse.

Most of Madzibaba Ishmael’s followers dismissed concerns that they were living in captivity and said they were there out of their own free will as followers of Madzibaba Ishmael.

Their leader is a an ex-convict.

Madzibaba Ishmael assured police officers of their peace at the shrine and pleaded with them to put their guns down for the children’s sake.

“We do not attack people as reported by people who are fighting us,” said Madzibaba Ishmael, who has run into trouble in the past for attacking police officers.

“Our children, as well as our wives, are not comfortable seeing people holding guns.

Musatye zvenyu nezvakaitika gore riya kuBudiriro.

“Our angels are the ones who fought some of your officers, it was not us.

“We preach peace here and we are a peaceful church.

“We want to slaughter a cow so that you eat while viewing our projects being carried out by our men for a living,” said Madzibaba Ishmael.

The team was led to a cemetery where shallow graves were dug around an anthill.

Madzibaba Ishmael said he was not aware of women’s and children’s rights.

He was taken to Nyabira Police Station and later to Norton Police Station where he was detained together with four other members of his church.

Tshabangu Calls Self Zim Political Messiah

By A Correspondent

In the ever-evolving political arena of Zimbabwe, a new figure has emerged, stirring both curiosity and controversy.

Sengezo Tshabangu, the controversial interim Secretary General of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), has boldly declared his intention to oust the ruling Zanu PF party from power.

Despite skepticism and accusations of being a Zanu PF proxy, Tshabangu remains resolute in his mission to “lead Zimbabwe into a new era.”

Tshabangu’s declaration comes at a time when Zimbabweans are yearning for change. Decades of political turmoil, economic instability, and allegations of corruption have left many disillusioned with the status quo.

As the leader of a nascent political movement, Tshabangu aims to capitalize on this sentiment and rally support for his cause.

In his recent statement, Tshabangu exuded confidence, proclaiming, “They’ve all failed to remove Zanu PF from power but I will. Watch this space. I’ll make bold maneuvers that will shock many. Zimbabwe is set for a fresh start. Trust the process.”

These words reflect Tshabangu’s determination and belief in his ability to effect real change.

However, his assertions have been met with skepticism from various quarters. Critics have raised doubts about his true intentions, questioning whether he is indeed a genuine opposition voice or merely a pawn in a larger political game.

Despite the doubts surrounding his allegiance, Tshabangu remains undeterred.

He sees himself as a catalyst for transformation, a beacon of hope for Zimbabweans weary of the status quo.

However, Tshabangu’s path to success is fraught with challenges.

The entrenched power structures of Zanu PF, coupled with the government’s history of crackdowns on dissent, pose formidable obstacles to any opposition movement.

Moreover, internal divisions within the opposition camp itself could undermine Tshabangu’s efforts to present a united front against the ruling party.Yet, amidst the challenges, there is also opportunity.

Tshabangu’s bold rhetoric and promises of decisive action have struck a chord with many disillusioned Zimbabweans, who see him as a fresh alternative to the old guard.

As Tshabangu embarks on his quest to remove Zanu PF from power, only time will tell whether he can deliver on his promises.

The road ahead will be arduous, fraught with obstacles and uncertainties. But for many Zimbabweans, Tshabangu represents a glimmer of hope in an otherwise bleak political landscape. Whether he can translate that hope into tangible change remains to be seen.

But for now, the stage is set, and all eyes are on Sengezo Tshabangu as he vows to reshape the future of Zimbabwe.

Chamisa Mourns ‘Mudhara Wazadza’

Former Citizens Coalition for Change leader Nelson Chamisa has mourned his number one supporter Nhamo Enias Manyatera who coined the popular slogan Wazadza saying his passing on is a huge subtraction to the movement.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, Chamisa said Manyatera was an embodiment and testament that “seniority in the struggle is by contribution not title or position.”

“A BLOW TO THE CITIZENS PROJECT…The passing of Mr. Manyatera ‘Wazadza’ is a huge subtraction to #CitizenPower. He was a true citizen leader, changing our political landscape in remarkable and organic ways.

“His contribution is testament to the power of CITIZENOCRACY, that citizen philosophy and signifies the importance of every voice as we journey towards a new Great Zimbabwe. Mr ‘Wazadza’ is the evidence that seniority in the struggle is by contribution and not position or title.

“He embodied the belief that every citizens voice, regardless of age or social standing, holds significance as we journey towards a new Great Zimbabwe. Even in death, he will continue to inspire citizens especially the young to contribute towards the building of a great nation path. He reminds us that ordinary citizens can achieve extraordinary feats in the quest to build a New Great Zimbabwe. He serves as proof that the people’s struggle is driven from the base and by the grassroots.”

Ex-ZBC Boss In Hot Soup

By Showbiz Reporter- The fired Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) chief executive Adelaide Chikunguru is facing legal action from her former employer for shouting them on social media.

ZBC board said it would sue Chikunguru if she did not file a complaint in the courts of law formally.

This comes on the back of persistent social media posts by Ms Chikunguru following her resignation from the State broadcaster on March 1, in which she is accusing the board of breaching her contract among other issues.

In a statement yesterday, the ZBC board gave Ms Chikunguru 48 hours to execute her threats of seeking legal justice, failure of which, it would seek a High Court decree for perpetual silence.

“The board advises Ms Chikunguru to pursue her claims, if any, through the due process of the law and notes her continued suggestion that her lawyers have been briefed.

“The board publicly states that there is no substance in the allegations against the board and the corporation. To this end, the board invites her to execute her threats of resort to law against the corporation within the next 48 hours.
“In the event that she does not do so, the board reserves the right to approach the High Court for a decree of perpetual silence calling upon her to bring the threatened legal action or forever keep her peace.
“This decision is necessary to protect the continuing harm to the corporation’s interests and those of its stakeholders,” the board said.

Chikunguru was suspended on February 28 to pave way for investigations into allegations that were levelled against her.

However, she resigned before the commencement of the investigation, which the board has maintained would have been independent and impartial.

However, Chikunguru has made allegations on social media suggesting that the charges were trumped up in pursuit of a personal and politicised agenda by certain named individuals.

Manyatera, who had been unwell for some time, passed away at the age of 81.

The “Chamisa Wazadza” became a popular slogan at CCC rallies across the country with party activists composing songs using the catch phrase.

Manyatera served as an election agent and chief political strategist in opposition politics, actively fighting against the Zanu PF party.

His contributions were highly regarded by opposition members, including the former Citizens Coalition for Change Masvingo Proportional representative parliamentarian, Honorable Mugidho.

He was also the father of Willard Manyatera, a former goalkeeper for Zimbabwe premiership giants Dynamos “Dembare” football club and the Zimbabwe National team, as confirmed by Mr. Festus Dumbu, a football and sports administrator based in Chiredzi.

Elon Musk Proves Too Powerful For Mnangagwa Administration

By A Correspondent| Zimbabwean authorities have accepted they have no capacity to stop the use of Starlink devices in the country and have thus started engaging with the US based company.

Despite previous reluctance to licence Starlink due to security concerns, it’s been revealed that talks between government representatives and Starlink officials are currently underway.

Sources close to the developments indicate that the government is now actively pursuing a partnership with Starlink, although details remain confidential.

Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera hinted at forthcoming developments, urging patience before commenting further on the matter.

This apparent shift in Zimbabwe’s approach towards Starlink comes in the wake of increasing adoption of the service within the country.

Recent incidents, including the dismissal of former Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation CEO Adelaide Chikurungu for allegedly acquiring a Starlink internet kit, underscore the growing demand for reliable connectivity solutions.

The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation, facing connectivity challenges in rural areas, previously relied on other internet services but failed to meet contractual obligations, leading to disruptions in service.

Subsequently, the broadcaster turned to Starlink as a temporary solution.

Despite not holding an operating license, Starlink’s presence in Zimbabwe has triggered legal actions against users. Both a Chinese mining company and a Victoria Falls-based company were fined for unauthorized use of Starlink equipment, highlighting the regulatory hurdles faced by the service provider.

Zimbabwe Decides To Allow Starlink But Demands CIO Spy Microchips Inserted In Advance

By Farai D Hove | Bowing to public pressure, the government of Zimbabwe has internally decided to allow the sale of Starlink devices in Zimbabwe but at the back of the US company taking on its survellience demands.

slpy microchip proposal

Zimbabwe is now demanding saying for the final permission to go through, the company must allow the planting of microchips inside the devices that it hopes will help the state security monitor traffic, in what leaves to be seen if the model will work seeing that big nations like US and Russia have no way of controlling Starlink.

The proposal  is so that all traffic into the country is monitored by the Central Intelligence Organisation, CIO and its sister company, Potraz (Postal And Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe.

The planting of surveillance microchips in digital devices presents a stark violation of international privacy laws and ethical norms. This practice would represent a grave intrusion into individuals’ privacy, shaking the very foundation of trust between consumers, technology companies, and governments.International privacy laws, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union, set strict limits on the collection and processing of personal data. These laws are built on the principle that privacy is a fundamental human right.

The clandestine insertion of surveillance microchips into digital devices would not only breach these regulations but also erode public trust in technology, leading to a chilling effect on freedom of expression and thought.

Surveillance of this nature raises the specter of a society where every action, every word, even every thought, is monitored and analyzed by unseen forces. Such practices harken back to the warnings of George Orwell’s “1984”, where surveillance is used as a tool for control and suppression of dissent.

The repercussions could be widespread, from stifling innovation and economic growth to violating the sanctity of personal and professional communications.

Moreover, this form of surveillance undermines the principles of democracy and human rights. It could be leveraged to target political opponents, activists, journalists, and minority groups, threatening the very fabric of democratic societies.

The international community has recognized the importance of safeguarding privacy in the digital age, as evidenced by the United Nations’ resolution on the right to privacy in the digital age, which underscores the need for protection against arbitrary surveillance.

The technical aspects of planting surveillance microchips in devices also present significant security risks. Such vulnerabilities could be exploited by malicious actors, leading to unprecedented levels of cyber espionage and crime.

The economic implications are vast, potentially costing industries billions in lost revenue and damages, not to mention the erosion of consumer confidence in digital technologies.

The imaginary proposed model reads as follows:

The Government of Zimbabwe (GOZ) recognises the increasing importance of secure and reliable internet access for its citizens and businesses. In line with this vision, the GOZ is excited to announce a public-private partnership designed to leverage cutting-edge satellite internet technology while ensuring national security.

Project Partners

Government of Zimbabwe (GOZ)
Ministry of Information And Communications Technology (MICT)

Potraz (Postal And Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe)
Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX.

Starlink: Gains access to the lucrative Zimbabwean market, offering its high-speed, low-latency internet services to a population eager for connectivity.
GOZ: Provides its citizens with improved internet access, fosters economic growth, and strengthens national security.
National Security Measures

To safeguard national security interests, Project Ilizwe will incorporate the following measures:

Data Centre Location: All data transmitted through Starlink within Zimbabwe will be routed through a secure data centre located within the country’s borders. This ensures local control over data storage and management.

Data Encryption: Starlink, in collaboration with the CIO and Potraz, will implement a robust data encryption system that adheres to Zimbabwean regulations. This ensures that only authorized personnel have access to user data.
Limited Functionality: Starlink devices sold in Zimbabwe will have specific functionalities limited through a central control system. This mitigates potential security risks associated with unauthorized access or misuse.

Transparency and Oversight.

The GOZ acknowledges the importance of transparency and public trust. To this end:

A clear legal framework will be established to govern data collection, storage, and access procedures.

An independent body will be formed to oversee the implementation of Project Ilizwe and ensure compliance with regulations.

Regular audits will be conducted to guarantee the integrity of the system.

SA Bus Accident: Company License Suspended

In the wake of a tragic bus accident in South Africa, which claimed the lives of 15 Zimbabwean passengers, the operator’s license for Simlex bus company has been swiftly suspended. The incident occurred in the Western Cape Province when a Simlex cross-border bus collided with a haulage truck along the treacherous Hex River Pass, approximately 140 kilometers from Cape Town.

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona announced the suspension, declaring that Simlex’s operations would remain halted until the company achieves full compliance with all relevant regulatory and policy frameworks. Expressing condolences to the victims and their families, Minister Mhona emphasized the need for stringent safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

“Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their lives in this devastating accident. We extend our prayers to the survivors and the injured, wishing them a swift and full recovery,” stated Minister Mhona. “This tragic event serves as a stark reminder to all transport operators, motorists, and members of the public to prioritize adherence to road traffic rules and exercise utmost caution on the roads.”

The suspension directive, issued under the provisions of the Road Motor Transportation Act (Chapter 13:15), underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of passengers and preventing further loss of life due to avoidable accidents. The Commissioner of Road Motor Transportation has been tasked with implementing the necessary measures to enforce compliance and enhance safety standards within the transportation sector.

As investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident continue, authorities are urging vigilance and cooperation from all stakeholders to identify and address any lapses in safety protocols. The tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of robust safety measures to protect the lives and well-being of passengers traveling on our roads.- state media

Election Mad UK Politicians Ban COS Families

UK Politicians Spark Outcry with Controversial Visa Restrictions

In a move that has sent shockwaves through communities and sparked fierce debate, the United Kingdom’s Home Office has implemented stringent visa rules, effectively barring overseas care workers and most overseas students from bringing their dependant family members to the country.

The measures, enacted on Monday, have drawn criticism for their perceived harshness and lack of compassion. The Home Office justified the decision by citing what they termed a “disproportionate” situation, pointing to the 120,000 dependants who accompanied 100,000 workers on the care visa route last year.

This sweeping policy change is poised to have significant ramifications, particularly for Zimbabweans already in the UK or planning to relocate with their families. Migration trends, reflective of an increasingly interconnected world, have been on the rise in recent years, making this move all the more impactful.

Home Secretary James Cleverly defended the decision, emphasizing that it aligns with the government’s agenda to curtail migration. He asserted that the 120,000 immigrants who entered the country last year would not meet the criteria under the new rules.

Furthermore, Minister for Social Care Helen Whately characterized the rules as promoting a “more ethical and sustainable approach.” However, critics argue that the restrictions are shortsighted and fail to account for the vital contributions made by care workers and students to the UK.

Adding to the upheaval, additional changes to visa requirements are on the horizon. Starting April 4, the minimum salary for those arriving on the Skilled Worker visa will skyrocket from £26,200 to £38,700, marking a staggering 48 percent increase. The minimum income requirement for family visas will also see a steep ascent, starting at £29,000 from April 11 and ultimately reaching £38,700 by next year.

Moreover, the decision to scrap the 20 percent salary discounts previously offered for shortage occupations further exacerbates the situation, leaving many questioning the government’s motives and priorities.

Amidst the outcry, there are indications that these measures could be temporary, with speculation rife that they may be reversed following this year’s elections. However, for now, the uncertainty looms large, casting a shadow over the future of immigration policy in the UK.-Agencies

Government Unwilling To Grant License To Starlink?

THE Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) says satellite internet provider, Starlink, has not been granted a license to operate in the country.

Officials from the Ministry Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services as well as POTRAZ, appeared before parliament to give oral evidence on data charges, network and access to internet services.

Cheza Supreme Court Appeal

Gweru-based entrepreneur and former CCC candidate for Chirumhanzu South, Patrick Cheza, has taken his case to the Supreme Court following a ruling by High Court Judge Justice Garainesu Mawadze permitting his eviction from S/D 43 Mahara Farm, situated near Mvuma. Cheza, among the 61 farmers settled at Mahara Farm, stands out as the sole individual targeted for eviction by the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, despite having invested a substantial sum of US$200,000 into the farm’s development.

Represented by his legal counsel, Nyasha Maguranyanga of Mutendi, Mudisi, and Shumba Legal Practitioners, Cheza contests the ruling on grounds of constitutional infringement. The appeal argues that Justice Mawadze’s decision to grant Cheza’s eviction was erroneous, asserting Cheza’s entitlement to consultation by the Ministry before any eviction proceedings.

The appeal document highlights the misconception made by the lower court in deeming Cheza ineligible for pre-eviction consultation, emphasizing Cheza’s legal right to be heard and consulted prior to any adverse actions taken against him.

In his pursuit for justice, Cheza seeks an order from the Supreme Court affirming his rightful ownership of the plot, while simultaneously restraining both the Ministry and any parties attempting to seize control of the farm.

Cheza’s investment in Mahara Farm is substantial and multifaceted, including the establishment of greenhouses, borehole installations, implementation of a solar power system, and the management of a diverse livestock portfolio comprising 105 cattle, 136 goats of a premium breed, and 56 sheep. Moreover, his operations support a workforce of 50 employees, whose livelihoods are intricately tied to the farm’s activities.- Agencies

Chitando In Bid To Block Rural District Councils Funding

By A Correspondent

In a recent development, the Minister of Local Government and Public Works, Winston Chitando, has made a decisive move to limit funding for Rural District Councils (RDCs) across Zimbabwe.

This decision has sparked controversy, with many observers suggesting that it is a strategic move to penalize local authorities governed by opposition parties.

During a gathering of Chief Executive Officers and chairpersons of rural district councils in Bulawayo, Minister Chitando articulated the government’s stance on the matter.

He urged RDCs to explore alternative avenues for revenue generation, emphasizing the need for self-sufficiency rather than relying solely on government funding, including rates and devolution funds.

This directive comes at a time when RDCs, particularly those controlled by opposition parties, have faced significant challenges in delivering essential services to their communities.

The reliance on government funding has been a lifeline for many of these councils, especially in rural areas where resources are scarce and infrastructure is often lacking.

While Minister Chitando’s call for increased revenue generation is not inherently unreasonable, critics argue that the timing and context of this directive raise concerns about political motivations.

By reducing financial support to RDCs, particularly those aligned with opposition parties, the government risks exacerbating existing disparities in service delivery and further marginalizing communities that are already vulnerable.

Furthermore, the burden of increasing revenue generation falls disproportionately on rural communities, where economic opportunities are limited, and poverty rates are often high.

Without adequate support and resources from the government, RDCs may struggle to meet the basic needs of their constituents, including access to clean water, healthcare, and education.

This move also raises questions about the government’s commitment to the principles of devolution, which were intended to decentralize power and resources, allowing local authorities greater autonomy in decision-making and resource allocation.

By curtailing funding to RDCs, the government appears to be undermining the very concept of devolution and centralizing control over local governance.

In response to Minister Chitando’s directive, leaders of opposition-controlled RDCs have expressed outrage, accusing the government of playing politics with essential services.

They argue that without adequate funding, RDCs will be unable to fulfill their mandate to serve their communities effectively, leading to further disenfranchisement and disillusionment among the populace.

It remains to be seen how RDCs will adapt to this new reality and whether they will be able to find alternative sources of revenue to sustain their operations.

However, one thing is clear: the decision to limit funding for rural district councils has far-reaching implications for governance, service delivery, and political dynamics in Zimbabwe.

As the debate continues to unfold, it is essential to ensure that the needs and interests of all communities, regardless of their political affiliations, are taken into account.

Mnangagwa Secret Plan Exposed

By A Correspondent

Alarming reports have emerged of a potential move by members of Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu PF, to push for legislation aimed at banning opposition parties in the country.

The Zanu PF group known as Varakashi, operating under the banner of “Operation Restore Legacy,” has ignited controversy with their call for parliamentarians to enact such a law.In

a statement released on Monday via their Facebook page, Operation Restore Legacy, Zanu PF Varakashi made their intentions clear: “With the 2/3 majority that ZANU PF has in Parliament, I am challenging legislators to enact a law that bans the opposition. Since its inception, the opposition has done more harm, invited sanctions, looted public resources, plagued service delivery, focused on petty fights.”

This brazen call to action has sparked outrage and condemnation from across the political spectrum, with critics decrying it as a direct assault on democracy and pluralism in Zimbabwe.

The notion of banning opposition parties not only runs counter to fundamental democratic principles but also raises concerns about the erosion of political freedoms and human rights in the country.

Opposition leaders and civil society groups have vehemently opposed the proposed legislation, arguing that it would amount to a grave violation of citizens’ rights to freedom of expression, association, and participation in the democratic process.

They warn that silencing dissenting voices and monopolizing political power would only serve to entrench authoritarianism and undermine the legitimacy of Zimbabwe’s governance system.

Furthermore, the allegations made by Zanu PF Varakashi regarding the opposition’s supposed role in inviting sanctions, looting public resources, and obstructing service delivery are unsubstantiated and politically motivated.

Such rhetoric not only seeks to demonize political opponents but also deflect attention from the ruling party’s own accountability and governance failures.

The push to ban opposition parties comes at a time of heightened political tensions in Zimbabwe, exacerbated by economic challenges, social unrest, and a lack of trust in state institutions.

Instead of fostering genuine dialogue and reconciliation, this divisive proposal threatens to further polarize society and deepen divisions along political lines. In response to the alarming developments, international observers and the broader global community have expressed concern about the state of democracy and human rights in Zimbabwe. Calls for respect for democratic norms, rule of law, and inclusive political participation have intensified, underscoring the need for Zimbabwean authorities to uphold their obligations under international law.

As Zimbabwe stands at a crossroads, facing critical decisions about its political future, it is imperative that all stakeholders prioritize dialogue, tolerance, and respect for democratic principles.

The attempt to ban opposition parties represents a dangerous regression and must be firmly opposed in defense of democracy, accountability, and the rights of all Zimbabweans.

Panicky Government Speaks On Starlink

THE Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) says satellite internet provider, Starlink, has not been granted a license to operate in the country.

Officials from the Ministry Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services as well as POTRAZ, appeared before parliament to give oral evidence on data charges, network and access to internet services.

Mnangagwa Resists Technology, Targets Starlink Users

By Technology Reporter- The government has intensified its plans to raid any premise and arrest anyone they see using Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet services.

Sources within the state security told ZimEye that surveillance teams have been set up and deployed to strategic areas where the state believes companies and individuals are using the technology.

Starlink, owned by SpaceX, has coverage in more than 60 countries and is operational in several African countries, including Nigeria, Mozambique, Zambia, Kenya and Malawi.

But in Zimbabwe, where internet connectivity drops away as you leave the capital, Harare – leaving those in more rural areas without primary access to communications – the government has banned Starlink.

The Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz), the country’s equivalent of South Africa’s communications regulator Icasa, has threatened to arrest individuals and businesses found distributing and advertising Starlink equipment.

The government-owned information website, H-Metro, said in January that Potraz would conduct nationwide raids to confront all those who may have installed the internet network.

Starlink has yet to be licensed by the regulator, but the service kits have been advertised on social media platforms, including Facebook, and distributed in the country.

A Potraz official said police have arrested two violators, in Victoria Falls and Bulawayo, and their cases are waiting to be heard in court. The official reiterated that selling or using Starlink services anywhere in Zimbabwe is illegal and that the regulator will conduct police raids to arrest any individual or business that violates the regulation.

Zanu PF Thugs Hijack Kwekwe Ranks, Demand Cash From Kombies

By Political Reporter- Zanu PF-youths operating as marshals have invaded city ranks in Kwekwe where they have taken charge of traffic and are collecting fees from pirate taxis.

Masvingo Mirror reports that it learnt this through Kwekwe Ward 3 Councillor, Pikurai Msipa at the local authority’s full council meeting held two weeks ago.

The local authority is as a result struggling to rid the roads of illegal pirate taxis and collect revenue from designated vendors’ stalls, alleged Msipa.

ZANU PF councillor Makomborero edu Mlambo of Ward 8 Amaveni conceded that council was losing revenue but disputed allegations that marshals illegally collecting money from pirate taxis were from his party.

Msipa alleged that the marshals move around in Zanu PF regalia and they are controlled by powerful party officials in the Midlands.

“The situation is so bad that even the local authority’s marshals take orders from the illegal party marshals.

“We are losing revenue as council because there are some people who wear certain party regalia and collect money from transporters in our bus terminus daily.
“These people have the power to control our council police officers. Our officers are taking orders from them that is why we are struggling with pirate taxis.
“We have pirate taxis for Amaveni and we always see these people wearing a certain party T-shirt collecting money from those pirate taxis operators,” said Msipa.
“I beg to differ because there is no one from my party doing that. It’s true that we are losing money and we expect council to do something but this money is not being lost because of people from my party,” he said.
Acting Chamber Secretary, Athunas Chidzurira said the only people responsible for collecting revenue are council officials.
“We only know of our council officers who collect revenue from our residents and we encourage residents to pay to our officials,” he said.
Sources however, told The Mirror that the illegal collection of revenue from the ranks is a corrupt activity that has been going on for many years.

Mnangagwa Minister Blocks Funding For Rural District Councils

FULL STATEMENT: Tsenengamu Says He Has Quit Politics

PUBLIC STATEMENT
Greetings Zimbabwe!! I write to you all my dear fathers and mothers, my brothers and sisters, comrades and friends such that I inform you of my decision regarding politics and related matters of greater interest to me and possibly to some of you.
1) BACKGROUND
1.1. – 24 years ago at the age of 17, I made a decision to join politics marking the genesis of my political journey.
1.2. – Coming from a background of strict parenting in an environment of deep poverty and utmost lack, where my late parents taught us not to be greed and selfish but to love, to be content and selfless, be upright and honest, straightforward and open, principled and dependable, considerate of each other’s needs and be willing to share in both times of plenty and lack, I had one very big dream and ambition that pushed me to get involved in politics and that dream and aspiration was never about the primitive accumulation of wealth or self-enrichment, neither was it about political power acquisition nor becoming famous or powerful but that I must join politics as an avenue for public service such that I would get an opportunity to selflessly serve my country and its people in ways that will not only provide hope to the hopeless but in ways that will also provide opportunities to create collective prosperity for all in order to eradicate deep-rooted poverty in our community and empower all the people especially the weak and the less privileged of our society.
1.3. – Growing up under those very harsh conditions which I wish no one to live under, I went into politics aspiring to leave an indelible mark in the selfless service of others, championing and pursuing the cause of the weak and the less-privileged. I also intended to reciprocate the invaluable help, support and love I always got from our community and total strangers who not only sacrificed their material resources and time to help me as an orphan at very critical stages of my life but they also did so without asking for a thing in return. This was the dream of a small boy in a village in Rushinga.
1.4. – Because of these values that were taught and given to us by our late parents, I found myself easily falling in love with socialism and left-wing political ideologies mainly because these ideologies support and seek to achieve social equality and egalitarianism and when I looked around for a political home, I quickly opted to join the ZANUPF Party.
1.5. – I will never shy away from this reality that I loved ZANUPF and believed in that party. I served this party and gave it my all. I invested and sacrificed a lot for the party. However, my relationship with the party was not at all times cosy as I would find myself being at loggerheads with the leadership as I would be suspended twice and expelled twice also within a period of 5 years, ie between 2015 and 2020.
1.6.- After my first expulsion in 2015 for openly advocating for the ascendancy of Cde ED Mnangagwa as successor to President RG Mugabe, I rejoined ZANUPF in November 2017 as I believed that the new President and the new leadership would do things differently and deliver. 3 years later in March 2020 I found myself summarily suspended and expelled from ZANUPF again but this time for upsetting leadership through unwelcome radical activism against corruption and looting as a youth leader as I also refused to undergo ideological retraining which I took as an insult to me.
1.7.- In August 2021, the Front for Economic Emancipation in Zimbabwe (FEEZ) which we had launched on the 25th of May 2020 as an apolitical movement was transformed into a political party with the intention to deal with what we noted as a leadership crisis which was manifesting itself in various ways
1.8.- Two years later faced with the 2023 harmonized elections, the FEEZ party took a decision not to sponsor candidates to contest under its banner for a number of reasons and I went on to publicly support the candidature of Cde Kasukuwere as an independent presidential candidate and became the national convener for his campaign before he was legally elbowed out while I went on to contest as an independent MP candidate in Mt Darwin South and lost in that contest.
1.9.- 24 years after my decision to go political, I look back and take stock of my achievements in line with my dream and aspirations as mentioned earlier on. I had to give myself enough time to reflect, introspect, self-critic and have deep soul-searching moments and have chosen to tell myself the bitter and honest truth than lie to myself. Yes I had a very honest conversation with myself in a bid to redeem myself from going further and further away from my dream and aspirations
2) OBTAINING REALITIES
2.1.- I accept that while there are so many things that I am personally proud of which I did and stood for as a politician, there are also those that I am not proud of. Being a young, inexperienced, energetic and adventurous person then, I made certain achievements but also made some mistakes when I lost sight of my target and went deep into the fascinating but very toxic political games and got my vision contaminated.
2.2.- I admit that in the period under review I digressed and got entangled in a lot more than what I had set out to achieve though I am not bitter but glad that I have learnt a lot and gained valuable experience from it all as I still have the chance and time to make things right.
2.3.- God knows and I know that my intentions are genuine and pure, but I have to be realistic and accept that what I have done this far has not yielded any tangibles but failed to help me realize my dream and aspirations which motivated me to go political in 1999.
2.4.- Now I have 3 options before me which are as follows;
a) OPTION 1 – Work hard to revamp our 2 year old socialist party, the Front for Economic Emancipation in Zimbabwe (FEEZ) and build it from grassroots so that it becomes a formidable force ahead of the 2028 elections.
b) Option 2 is to join the main opposition ranks under Advocate Nelson Chamisa and serve from that corner.
c) Option 3 is to rejoin the ZANUPF Party.
3) THE DECISION
3.1.- OPTION 1- Considering the context and nature of Zimbabwean politics and obtaining circumstances, there is absolutely no way that I will be able to realize my dream through FEEZ in the near future considering that it took ZANU a solid 17 years from 1963 to 1980 to take power including years of an armed struggle and it has taken 24 years since 1999 for the MDC, the only formidable challenge that ZANUPF has faced since 1980 but which has unfortunately morphed into different forms and identities and still failed to achieve what they set out to achieve. This option means that I have to postpone providing real tangibles and wait for at least 20 or so years before taking over national leadership and implement our alternative policies which I don’t think I am able to do considering that a number of current problems require immediate attention and action
3.2.- OPTION 2 – This option of considering working with Advocate Chamisa in my view will not work in that I am a devoted pan-Africanist and a radical socialist with very strong and uncompromising ideological propositions and I do not think that my ideology and political approach which includes operating through institutionalized frameworks will be compatible with that of Adv Chamisa’s strategic ambiguity and whose ideology he has kept to himself and not publicly pronounced. I also do not get along with his preferred leadership style and modus operandi. Given this reality, I do not see myself being able to work with Adv Chamisa and any attempts to try a relationship might not work in the long run though he is popular and stands a better chance politically than me to become the next Head of State and Government if he is to rightly convert his popularity and numerical superiority.
3.3.- OPTION 3 – Rejoining ZANUPF would seem the most viable and convenient thing to do for someone like me who dearly loved and served this party and played some role in supporting the ascendancy of the new leadership but I personally don’t think that this will work as I don’t foresee myself being able to sacrifice my conscience for convenience and keep my mouth shut and adopt a see-no-evil and hear-no-evil approach. I also do not want a repeat of last time as I disagreed with leadership positions on compensation of former white farmers, the push to amend the presidential age requirement, total scrapping of the indigenization policy among many other issues. I don’t hate ZANUPF nor its leadership but my biggest weakness and challenge if I rejoin ZANUPF is my honesty, candidness and openness as I am not able to pretend and play along and because of this, my membership in ZANUPF will definitely not last as I would risk being expelled for a third time and might end up being nicknamed “MUDZINGWA” or “MUTANDWA”.
3.4.- I have told myself that should I decide to remain active in our politics and push my dream through politics, I risk continuing to lose not just my dream by indefinitely postponing its realization but also permanently losing myself and just become one political “monster” without a conscience, personal fulfilment and inner peace.
Thus I have concluded that though disappointing to some of my political followers and supporters, I need to reconsider the path I am on and deliberately alter my approach.
3.5.- Now therefore, I am glad to announce to all concerned of my conscious decision to quit and take an early retirement from politics. Thus I am totally withdrawing from participating in any political activity privately or publicly, and shall henceforth neither belong nor associate with any political party, grouping or faction as I shall be redirecting my energy, focus and attention towards three apolitical causes which I will mention on the last part of this statement.
3.6.- I do this because I strongly believe that a majority of Zimbabweans across the political divide share in the same dream of a developed, empowered, prosperous and corruption-free Zimbabwe with equal opportunities for all but have been divided on partisan lines and cannot come to work together on matters of mutual interest because of the hate, toxicity and polarization in our politics.
3.7.- I have also came to appreciate that not everything must be politicized or done under the banner of a political party for more often than not, no matter how noble your intentions are, one risks being misinterpreted or misunderstood as many would naturally assume that being a politician, one has no pure intentions but is doing it for political gain which perception would result in quite a number of people mounting massive resistance towards such noble and beneficial initiatives.
3.8.- Therefore let it be noted here and now that I have ceased to represent or push any political cause and shall henceforth deliberately avoid commenting, representing or pursuing in public or private on any political cause.
4) WAYFORWARD
4.1.- I am glad to further advise all interested that in furtherance of my dreams and aspirations which were never about the primitive accumulation of wealth or self-enrichment, neither were they about political power acquisition nor becoming famous or powerful but to get an opportunity to selflessly serve my country and its people in ways that will not only provide hope to the hopeless but in ways that will also provide opportunities to create collective prosperity for all in order to eradicate deep-rooted poverty and corruption in our community and empower all the people especially the weak and the less privileged of our society, whose realization I feel I must not postpone further or delay through continued participation in political games, the following initiatives shall be undertaken;
a) We shall be operationalizing and activating the National Affirmative Action Assembly of Zimbabwe (NAAAZ) which we legally registered to champion a coordinated, effective and objective attack on man-made poverty and economic inequalities by pushing for not just equal and unhindered access to economic resources and opportunities by all Zimbabweans but more importantly ensuring ownership, control and utilization of the same as well as ensuring that Zimbabweans and their respective communities attain maximum benefit from such resources.
b) We shall proceed to operationalize and activate the legally registered Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Citizens Taskforce (ZACCT) to spearhead citizens efforts in objectively and uncompromisingly expose, confront, fight and eradicate corruption and looting in Zimbabwe without any bias or favour.
c) Lastly but not least, in line with my long held desire to reciprocate the invaluable help, support and love I always got from our community and total strangers who not only sacrificed their material resources and time to help me as an orphan at very critical stages of my life but also doing so without asking for anything in return, I shall be coordinating efforts and using my networks and contacts to mobilize and organize resources from friends and well-wishers to unconditionally help out the needy and the less-privileged in our communities and help others carry burdens of life and put smiles on their faces.
4.2.- The above three causes are at the bottom of my heart and are the reason why I initially decided to join politics in 1999 and the same reasons I am leaving politics in 2024 for I am convinced that these can’t be fully realized under any political set-up. I am fully convinced that my principles and values which I am not ready to sacrifice for political expediency stand in my way of becoming a successful politician and because I am not one to sacrifice my principles then the right thing to do would be to step back from the game.
4.3.- In conclusion, I would like to sincerely thank all those who supported me in my political life as you did a lot to build me into the man I am today. I thank you all for me as I continue to cherish everything we did together. I plead with you today to bear with me for taking this route and urge you all to take solace in the fact that the objective of establishing a developed, empowered, prosperous and corruption-free Zimbabwe in our lifetime remains unaltered as I continue with this journey though in a different way
4.4.- Be rest assured that poverty, corruption and economic inequality remain the evils that I have since declared my sworn enemies and there shall be no compromises on that. I have only changed the mode of transport but the destination remains the same though you shall see me in politics no more.

Institutions Of Higher Learning Should Not Be Blamed For The Blunders Of Politicians

Prof Reinford Khumalo |

By Reinford Khumalo | My heart swell with anger as my eye caught sight of the title “The UK Rubbishes, University of Zambia (UNZA) degrees, in a newspaper, the Zimeye, of 10 March, 2024. This relegation of the institution by the British Government was based on their assessment of the degree through their National Academic Recognition Information Centre (NARIC). As I went through this article, my attention was immersed on looking for the reason in the article for this inditement of the university in this manner. I got it.

According to the article, key among other criteria for measuring the quality of a university is the ability of a country to utilise its available resources to benefit the nation economically and socially. This ability by the country is testimony that university graduates from local universities in the country do or do not provide sound judgment and make decisions for utilising the country’s resources properly to uplift standards of living of the local citizens. The University of Zambia fails to achieve this, the article implies. Copper mines have been sold to private international companies and corruption instigated by multinational corporations is rampant. Zambia therefore, as a country even though with plenty of mineral resources, does not benefit. This is all because of the academic institution that does not meet the standard to produce graduates who can make these desired decisions; the article retorts.

A scenario is depicted by many developmental economists and academics that there is a tendency for developing countries having a plentiful supply of natural resources but such countries are found languishing in poverty still. Richard Auty, Professor at Lancaster University, has coined a term for such a scenario as “resource curse” or “poverty paradox” or “paradox of plenty.” However, in as much as the depiction of such a situation is true and real, the apportionment of a responsibility and therefore, a blame to Academic institutions of higher learning of developing countries for such failure is misplaced and wrongful. The blame for the failure of many a developing nation to develop their nations in proportion to the abundance of their resources lies squarely at the door of policy makers and politicians not academic institutions. The following are the reasons I advance for my refusal to admit the guilt of universities.

• It is politicians that make investment decisions and make investment agreements with other states. There is a visible disconnect between academic institutions and politicians in many a developing country. Many developing countries and African Governments in particular, work in isolation and in parallel with academic institutions. Academics do research and publish well researched papers in journals and articles in newspapers but politicians do not read to apply what has been researched and published.

• In many progressive developed countries, special advisors to Governments and Presidents are academics. For example, the special advisor of Putin, the Russian President is a University Professor, and so is the British Prime Minister’s. Of course, some developing countries have Presidential Advisory teams. The selection criteria of membership into such teams, however, is based on social capital rather than human capital, (whom one knows rather than what one knows). It becomes a club for sharing benefits that accrue in the exercise.

• Mutual agreements for investment between nations are done by governments. The latter decide what form the agreement should take, if it’s to do with trading in mineral resources without any beneficiation within the country, that is it. Academic institutions have no part to play nor can they intervene. It is politicians that decide. Of course, consequences follow after each decision has been made. The question therefore is, should those that have not been part of the decision be blamed for the results of the decision? Categorically, No!

• Moreover, the university of Zambia was established in 1966 during the tenure of Kenneth Kaunda, the country’s first President, prompted by the need to develop skills that could make use of the country’s resources to benefit the nation. Negative sentiments against proper education for Africans had, however, been set earlier instigated by Cecil John Rhodes who signed an agreement for Mineral rights with King Lewanika to mine Copper in the country through his British South Africa Company. Cecil John Rhodes insisted that the natives shall not benefit from the franchise of mining, hence they should not be provided with adequate education to understand how to benefit from the minerals produced. Copper, therefore, had to be shipped to Britain with no provision for benefiting the natives.

The above is the background and circumstances surrounding the university of Zambia. These developments are a pointer that the indictment about UNZA is coming to most universities in developing countries, even our Southern African Development Community (SADC} universities. When, we have similar circumstances and conditions, we get similar outcomes or results.

Politicians should take proper charge and seek advice from academic institutions. Silo mentality should cease. Politicians need advisors who research and solve questions for the nation and these are academics. Never should academic institutions be blamed for what they do not participate in.

Mnangagwa Has Transformed Country To Heaven-On-Earth: Varakashi

By A Correspondent

Amidst a backdrop of ongoing economic challenges and widespread discontent, a praise team affiliated with Zimbabwe’s ruling party, Zanu PF, known as Varakashi, has sparked controversy with claims of transformative leadership under President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

While Varakashi lauds the president for what they perceive as monumental progress, many Zimbabweans, grappling with the harsh realities of everyday life, view such assertions as insensitive and out of touch.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Varakashi proclaimed, “All the 16 million people living in Zimbabwe must be grateful for being alive and more importantly to be witnessing the gigantic developments being cascaded by President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.”

The statement continued to list achievements ranging from state-of-the-art infrastructure such as roads, houses, dams, and airports to purported economic advancements.

These assertions have sparked a backlash among Zimbabweans who feel disillusioned by the vast disparity between Varakashi’s narrative and their lived experiences.

Many citizens, struggling with unemployment, inflation, and inadequate access to basic services, perceive Varakashi’s praise as an insult to their suffering.

In response to Varakashi’s statement, one citizen remarked, “It’s easy for Varakashi to claim we’re living in a Heaven-on-Earth nation when they’re not the ones struggling to put food on the table or find employment. For the majority of Zimbabweans, life is anything but heavenly.”

Another citizen expressed frustration, stating, “It’s insulting for Varakashi to boast about developments when we’re facing constant power cuts, water shortages, and crumbling infrastructure.

Instead of patting themselves on the back, they should be addressing the real issues affecting ordinary citizens.”

Critics argue that Varakashi’s praise of President Mnangagwa’s leadership ignores the systemic challenges plaguing Zimbabwe, including corruption, political repression, and a struggling healthcare system.

While there have been efforts to address some of these issues, such as infrastructure development projects, they have often been overshadowed by persistent economic hardships and allegations of mismanagement.

The disconnect between Varakashi’s narrative and the lived experiences of ordinary Zimbabweans highlights the deep divisions within the country’s political landscape.

As the debate over President Mnangagwa’s leadership continues, it is essential to acknowledge the diverse perspectives and realities of Zimbabweans from all walks of life.

Only through honest dialogue and genuine efforts to address the underlying issues can Zimbabwe truly move towards a brighter future for all its citizens.

Mnangagwa In Secret Plot To Ban Opposition Completely

Former Herald Editor Drops Bombshell On Judith Makwanya Death

By A Correspondent| Former Editor of The Herald, Ceasar Zvayi has claimed that the late deputy diplomatic correspondent Judith Makwanya could have died as a result of the pressure she faced from some journalists at ZBC who felt she was too old for television.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter to remember Makwanya who passed on, on 12 March 2019, Zvayi said;

“Zorora murugare, lala ngokuthula my sister Judith Makwanya promoted to glory on this day 5 years ago after being hounded to her death by some Johnnie-come-latelies who told her she was ‘too old for television”. They know themselves though they were effusive upon her demise.”

Makwanya, who spent over two decades at ZBC was diagnosed with high blood pressure and died after being admitted at West End clinic in Harare.

ZimEye sources at the time of Makwanya’s death had alleged that she was summoned by a senior government official over the leaked WhatsApp chat in which ZBC staffers were the country’s leadership.

Law Catches Up On Victoria Falls Dealer

By A Correspondent| In a recent legal development in Victoria Falls, Controller Daka, a 46-year-old resident, has been found guilty and sentenced by a Victoria Falls Magistrate on charges of fraud.

The conviction stems from an incident on February 11, 2024, in Monde village, Victoria Falls, where the accused intentionally misled Munashe Chizhou into believing he was selling his residential stand.

The State successfully demonstrated that Daka accepted the full payment for the stand from the unsuspecting Chizhou.

However, the truth unraveled on March 3, 2024, when Chizhou sought to change the ownership of the property.

The village head revealed that the stand had already been sold to Wellington Muzhuzha in January 2024.

Following this revelation, Chizhou promptly reported the matter to the police, leading to the subsequent arrest of Controller Daka.

The defrauded amount totaled USD3,000, and unfortunately, no funds have been recovered in the aftermath of the investigation.

In response to the charges, the Victoria Falls Magistrate sentenced Daka to 36 months imprisonment.

Of this term, 8 months were suspended for a duration of 5 years, contingent upon the accused’s demonstration of good behavior. Additionally, 16 months of imprisonment were suspended with the condition that Daka completes 560 hours of community service.

Furthermore, a 12-month imprisonment term was suspended on the condition that Daka restitutes the complainant, Munashe Chizhou, the full sum of USD3,000 by April 2, 2024.

Failure to meet this restitution deadline could result in the activation of the suspended sentence.

Mudiwa Hood Rejects ‘Bogus’ Doctorate, Distances Self From The Honor

By Jane Mlambo| Musician and entrepreneur Mudiwa Hood has rejected an honorary doctorate conferred by the International Institute of Philanthropy (IIP).

This decision follows the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) stating that IIP lacks authorization to grant degrees in Zimbabwe, as it is not a registered higher education institution.

Mudiwa Hood took to social media to reveal that he had previously declined the honorary PhD in 2023 until IIP revisited the offer earlier this month, emphasizing that it aimed to acknowledge his contributions to humanitarian efforts and philanthropy.

Posting on social media, Mudiwa Hood said he will instead work hard to earn the title of Doctor through completing his PhD.

“I was recently approached and offered an honorary degree for my efforts in humanitarian work and philanthropy.

“Initially, I declined the offer in May 2023, but by March 2024, it was emphasized that the recognition was due to my actual contributions, not academic achievements – they were clear, it wasn’t a PhD.

“The issue was further complicated when ZimCHE noted that the awarding organization wasn’t registered with them. As a result, I’ve distanced myself from this honour.

“Despite this situation, NOTHING CHANGES. I’ve never claimed the title ‘Doctor’, adhering to my principle of earning the title through completing my PhD,” said Mudiwa.

Last week, ZIMCHE said IIP is awarding several honourary degrees in violation of section 75(3) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No. 20) Act, 2013 as read with section 10(1) of the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education Act (Chapter 25:27).

It also ordered IIP to publicly withdraw all awarded degrees and inform all recipients accordingly.

Fake Degrees Issuing Institution Shadows Tuku’s Legacy

By Showbiz Reporter- The recent discrediting of the International Institute of Philanthropy (IIP) by the government from conferring honorary degrees to Zimbabweans is putting at scrutiny the Honorary PhD the same institute conferred to the late great music icon Oliver Mtukudzi.

In 2014, the International Institute of Philanthropy conferred Tuku with an Honorary Doctorate in Human Letters (DHL).

This week, the government, through the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE), exposed the International Institute of Philanthropy (IIP) for issuing fake honorary degrees.

ZIMCHE said IIP should immediately withdraw all the degrees it issued to people because it is not authorised to award degrees in Zimbabwe as it is not a registered higher education institution.

In a statement, while conferring Tuku with the honorary PhD in 2014, the International Institute of Philanthropy Zimbabwe chapter representative Dr. Enrico Sibanda said the award was long overdue for the towering beacon of Zimbabwean arts and culture. “Look at what he has done for Zimbabwe. He is respected locally, regionally and internationally,” said Sibanda. “He has mentored many musicians and has gone through so much to be where he is today. People should stop calling this man ‘Oliver.’ It’s high time he was called Dr. Mtukudzi.”

IIP has conferred honorary degrees to several politicians and controversial individuals.

Fraudster Dilesh Nguwaya and Midlands-based Zanu PF’s G40 Queen-pin Smelly Dube were honoured by this institution.

The same International Institute of Philanthropy (IIP) has awarded several businessmen and controversial figures with honorary PhDs among them Kambucha Beverages Director Eric Francis Niyonsaba ( Kambucha), and Mudiwahood.

Misery Mounts For Walter Magaya As Victims Seek Justice

By A Correspondent| Numerous individuals who engaged in mining ventures with Walter Magaya, the head of Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD), are now pursuing legal action, distressed and empty-handed seven years after depositing their hard-earned money.

Former loyal followers of Magaya claim that they were enticed into a failed mining share arrangement orchestrated through Yadah Connect, the investment branch of the PHD Church.

Depositing sums exceeding US$1,000, victims were promised a 40% return on their investment after a mere six months.

Growing increasingly disillusioned with the lack of progress and fearing they’ve fallen victim to a scam, the aggrieved parties have now turned to legal representation in a bid to recover their funds.

NewsDay has obtained copies of demand letters issued by the victims, dispatched through their legal representative Makiya and Partners Legal Practitioners.

Rumbidzai Dukwara, one such victim, invested both US$1,000 and R90,000 in 2017.
The legal missive asserts that despite her attempts to withdraw her funds after the promised six-month period, her endeavors have borne no fruit.

The lawyers have given Yadah Connect until March 14 to deposit US$1,600, inclusive of legal costs, with the R90,000 to be paid in cash.

Percy Makawonesu, another victim, entrusted R100,000 to a PHD bank account in South Africa in 2017, only to find himself unable to recover his money.
Yadah Connect has been given until March 14 to pay R100,000 in cash, along with US$600 for legal expenses.
In a separate scandal, Magaya is accused of defrauding home seekers through a company called Planet Africa in a botched stands deal.
The housing scheme, offering stands of varying sizes and prices, lacked clarity in its agreement, with a vague “grey agreement of sale” failing to specify stand sizes and prices.
Deposits for the stands ranged from US$1,000 to US$4,000, with monthly payments required.
Efforts to obtain comments from Magaya proved futile, as his spokesperson, Admire Mango, did not answer calls or respond to messages by the time of publication.
Magaya faces another legal challenge involving Israeli investors who allege he duped them of US$3 million in a failed mining venture.
The case, registered under Case reference No HCH621/23, is currently awaiting trial in the High Court.
A memorandum obtained by NewsDay indicates that Magaya purportedly solicited the funds in early 2022 for a gold mine development project, only to disappear with the money, leaving the investors in the lurch.
The case is actively before the courts, further tarnishing Magaya’s reputation.
