A credit controller at Varichem Pharmaceutical Company was on Wednesday arraigned before the court facing charges of theft of trust property after allegedly embezzling US$300,000 from his employer.

Milton Goremusandu, 42, appeared before Harare magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa, who remanded him in custody until Thursday for a bail ruling.

Goremusandu is alleged to have committed the offence in collaboration with his subordinate, Edwell Sibanda, a debtor’s clerk, who is already on remand.

According to court documents, earlier this month the complainant received a tip-off from a whistleblower indicating that Goremusandu and Sibanda were working together to steal funds from the company.

“A preliminary internal investigation revealed that between 2021 and May 2025, the accused collected cash from various company clients—Trinity Pharmacy (US$252,930), Vidamac Pharmaceuticals (US$36,350), Asca Health Care (US$33,220), and Care Point Pharmacy Chinhoyi (US$24,829)—but failed to bank or submit the received funds,” read the court papers.

Goremusandu allegedly instructed Sibanda to process fraudulent journal entries that debited customers who did not owe the company and credited those who had paid, in a bid to conceal the theft.

Using this method, the accused is said to have prejudiced the company of a total of US$347,329.

The matter was reported to the police on 12 May 2025, leading to Sibanda’s arrest at his workplace two days later.

On 18 May 2025, police searched Goremusandu’s residence and recovered a grey Toyota Fortuner SUV valued at approximately US$60,000 and a white Toyota Corolla Axio worth around US$10,000. The vehicles, believed to be proceeds of the crime, were found in the possession of his wife, Miranda Rutendo Mativenga.

A local opposition councillor has passed away from injuries sustained in a recent road traffic accident.

The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) in Chivhu confirmed the death on Wednesday, expressing sorrow over the loss of Councillor Amos Reza. He had been receiving treatment in intensive care since the incident.

“Councillor Reza, who represented Ward 10 in Chivhu’s Chikomba district, sadly could not recover from his injuries,” read the statement. “His ward included areas such as Highview, Skyview, Kundis, Kadoma, Masvingo, and Riverside. His determination during his time in hospital was a testament to his strength and commitment to the community.”

Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) has suspended one of its students, Linos Munogweyi, for allegedly posting “threatening and derogatory” remarks against the institution’s management on a WhatsApp group, a move that has sparked debate over academic freedom and freedom of expression.

In a letter dated May 13, 2025, GZU Registrar Dr. S. Gwatidzo informed Munogweyi of the verdict following a disciplinary hearing held on May 2. The Student Disciplinary Committee found him guilty of contravening the university’s code of conduct and the Great Zimbabwe University Act.

“On 15 February 2025, at about 2054 hours, you used a WhatsApp group to unlawfully and intentionally post threatening and derogatory messages against the University Management, inciting other students to take action,” reads part of the letter.

As a result, the university has suspended Munogweyi for two semesters, with immediate effect. The letter further warns that any repeat of the offense will lead to “further and more severe disciplinary action.”

The development has drawn sharp criticism from student activists and opposition figures. Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) youth assembly spokesperson Stephen Sarkozy Chuma condemned the suspension, calling it an attack on students’ rights.

“This is simply unacceptable by GZU,” Chuma said. “We can’t have tertiary institutions suspending students for exercising their freedoms. A university should be a place of sharing new horizons of knowledge, not muzzling of students.”

The university has not publicly detailed the specific contents of Munogweyi’s messages, but sources say the student had expressed dissatisfaction over administrative issues and called for student mobilisation.

Critics argue that GZU’s disciplinary measures are becoming increasingly punitive, stifling dissent and curtailing the democratic space within higher education institutions.

Joseph Madhimba, a towering figure in Zimbabwe’s media and academic circles, has died in Namibia. He passed away this morning in Okahandja, about 60km north of Windhoek, after a prolonged illness stemming from a stroke suffered in early 2024. He was 70.

Madhimba was one of the most iconic newsreaders in the history of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), having joined the broadcaster shortly after Zimbabwe’s independence in 1980. Trained in journalism in Montpelier, France, and with a stint at Agence France-Presse (AFP), Madhimba brought a rare sophistication to Zimbabwean newsrooms during ZBC’s golden era—an era tragically curtailed by political capture.

He rose from sub-editor to lead newsreader under the stewardship of Claude Mararike, then head of news. Madhimba’s deep voice, composure, and commanding presence became synonymous with evening news bulletins, where he worked alongside other luminaries such as Grey Tichatonga, John Gambanga, Busi Chindove, Isidore Gwashure, Robin Shava, Everisto Mwatse, Caleb Thondhlana, Patrick Nyamhunga, Dorcas Munyoro, Praexedes Dzingare, Noreen Welch, Themba Bassopo-Moyo, and the late Alice Chavunduka.

Despite the exceptional talent at ZBC, the broadcaster quickly became a casualty of state control, with ZANU PF transforming it into a crude propaganda vehicle. This political interference not only stifled creativity and professionalism but also ruined the credibility and viability of what could have been a continental media powerhouse. Madhimba’s departure from ZBC mirrored the exodus of talent frustrated by the channel’s politicisation and decline.

After leaving broadcasting, Madhimba relocated to Namibia where he transitioned into academia and finance. He lectured at the Polytechnic of Namibia and built a respected profile in the region’s educational and financial sectors.

He suffered a debilitating stroke in early 2024 which eventually led to heart failure. Madhimba had been in and out of hospital for the past 12 months before his passing.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon.

A 22-year-old illegal gold panner, Omega Mazivangeyi, tragically lost his life last Saturday after suffocating in a poorly ventilated mine shaft at Zaina Mine in Penhalonga.

According to Manicaland Acting Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, Mazivangeyi died after inhaling toxic gas deep inside a 20-meter shaft. “Mazivangeyi breathed in a toxic gas that killed him instantly,” said Chinyoka.

Mazivangeyi, from Nyabadza Village under Chief Mutasa in Honde Valley, had entered the mine in the company of a friend, Gift Mtetwa. The two arrived at the disused mine around 11 a.m. with the intention of illegally panning for gold.

“Mazivangeyi used a rope to descend into the shaft while Mtetwa remained outside. After a while, Mtetwa noticed that Mazivangeyi was not responding and climbed down to check on him,” explained Chinyoka.

However, upon entering the shaft, Mtetwa was quickly overwhelmed by the gas and had to climb out immediately. He then alerted fellow panners who assisted in reporting the incident to Penhalonga Police Station.

A joint operation by the police and Redwing Mine’s rescue team was launched, resulting in the retrieval of Mazivangeyi’s body. Authorities discovered that the shaft had been sealed off using soil and logs, severely restricting airflow.

“This shaft had limited ventilation, which contributed to the accumulation of toxic gases inside,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

Authorities have since reiterated the dangers of illegal mining, especially in unregulated and abandoned shafts, warning that such activities continue to claim lives.

The body of the deceased was taken to the local mortuary for a post-mortem.

Six Chinese Nationals Granted Bail After Trespassing and Erecting Illegal Structures at Protected Chiredzi Mine

By Dorrothy Moyo | Six Chinese nationals who illegally invaded a protected mining site and began constructing buildings without the owners’ consent were yesterday granted US$200 bail each by Chiredzi Magistrate Tendai Mutamba.

The accused — Huang Dongqiang, Liang Xiaoan, Li Anming, Huang Honguei, Chen Qinbo, and Yuan Feng — are jointly charged with local accomplice Nyasha Chauke. They face allegations of unlawfully refusing to vacate Oneiric Mine in Ndali, which is registered under special grant number 7809.

According to court records, the group was arrested on Thursday by detectives from the Chiredzi Minerals, Flora and Fauna Unit (CID MFFU) following a complaint by the mine owners.

Prosecutors said the Chinese nationals, who reside at Mupinga Business Centre, conspired with Chauke to enter the mine without permission. They began erecting permanent structures on the site despite warnings from the rightful owners.

The mine operators reportedly discovered the developments on April 21, 2025, and formally ordered the group to halt construction on May 7. However, the accused continued with their activities, prompting a police report.

When questioned by law enforcement, the suspects failed to produce any legal documents authorising their presence or construction activities on the site.

All seven accused have been remanded to appear in court again on June 5 as investigations continue. Authorities say more charges may be considered depending on the outcome of the probe.

“This is NC1, a UZ hostel which is flooding. The institution has not only failed to pay lecturers but even to provide basic services for students,” ZINASU posted, questioning who would bear the cost of emergency alternative accommodation.

By A Correspondent | Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed the arrest of 28-year-old Sibongiseni Mfanaso Mpofu in connection with a horrifying attempted murder case that has shocked the Lupane community.

According to police reports released today, the suspect allegedly struck 72-year-old Christine Ncube on the head with an axe before dousing her in paraffin and setting her ablaze. The gruesome attack took place on 18 May 2025.

Authorities say Mpofu accused the elderly woman of bewitching him — a claim that has sparked outrage and reignited concerns about the continued violence related to witchcraft allegations in rural Zimbabwe.

Christine Ncube sustained severe burns in the attack but was rescued by fellow villagers. She was initially treated at St Luke’s Hospital before being transferred to Mpilo Hospital for further care.

Zimbabweans based in the United Kingdom have launched a campaign to block First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa’s upcoming visit to the UK in June, accusing her of being complicit in human rights abuses and the continued suffering of Zimbabweans under the ZANU-PF regime.

The First Lady is reportedly expected to attend the FLAIR Summit, where she is slated to speak on women’s empowerment—a move that has sparked outrage among the Zimbabwean diaspora, who say she has no credibility to speak on such matters.

Speaking on behalf of the protesters, activist Shamiso Moyo took to Twitter over the weekend, rallying Zimbabweans in the diaspora to unite and act.

“Together we can stop this enabler from coming to the UK. Time to mobilise and say no—she is a cruel woman who enjoys the suffering of fellow women,” said Moyo.

Moyo, like many in the diaspora, is accusing Auxillia Mnangagwa of being part of a regime that has overseen economic collapse, political repression, and gender-based violence in Zimbabwe.

“Zimbabweans, we can stop this tyranny—@edmnangagwa—if we come together. ED and family must be pushed back. Auxillia needs to be pushed back. She is a mafia and she knows nothing about empowerment of women,” she added.

In one of the more controversial calls, she said, “Please gather rotten eggs and bless her with the eggs.”

Critics say Mnangagwa’s appearance at an international women’s summit is a stark contradiction to her record back home.

“Auxillia Mnangagwa cannot be allowed to come to the FLAIR Summit to speak about women empowerment which she has no clue about. For 45 years she has been part of ZANU-PF which has championed the downfall of Zimbabwe. For the past 8 years she has been a useless First Lady,” read another widely circulated post from Moyo.

The campaign to block her visit comes amid growing frustration among Zimbabweans abroad, many of whom fled the country due to political persecution and economic hardship.

Organisers are reportedly planning protests and are lobbying UK authorities to deny her entry or at least bar her from participating in the event.

As of now, there has been no official response from the First Lady’s office regarding the planned UK visit or the protests.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has approached the High Court seeking an order declaring some provisions of the Private Voluntary Organisations (PVO) Amendment Act unconstitutional and to have them annulled.

According to ZLHR, some of these provisions arbitrarily criminalize legitimate and critical development and human rights activities, while imposing excessive regulations on PVOs.

In an application filed on May 16, ZLHR contended that the PVO Amendment Act, which was enacted and published in the Government Gazette on April 11, 2025, represents a significant infringement on the rights of its members, as the organization is an independent entity established by law.

“ZLHR opines that the impugned amendments contained in the PVO Amendment Act constitute unconstitutional over-regulation, over legislation and criminalisation of innocent important charitable, developmental and human rights work.”

The organisation further argues that the PVO Amendment Act violates various constitutional rights, including the freedom of assembly and association outlined in section 58(1), freedom of expression under section 61, the right to administrative justice guaranteed by sections 68(1) and (2), the right to a fair hearing protected by section 69(1), (2), and (3), and section 71, which safeguards property rights. ZLHR also claims that the problematic provisions of the PVO Amendment Act are vague, poorly drafted, and grant arbitrary powers, resulting in over-regulation of PVOs.

“The PVO Amendment Act centralises arbitrary power in the hands of the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare and the Registrar’s office, leading to excessive executive interference in the internal operations of PVOs,” the organisation said in its application.

It said these provisions effectively empower the Executive to control PVOs and deregister those deemed undesirable on unclear grounds.

In light of these concerns, ZLHR seeks a High Court order of constitutional invalidity for sections 4, 5 as read with section 9(5), sections 6, 13A, 14, and 21 of the Private Voluntary Organisations Act (as amended by the PVO Amendment Act) to be declared ultra vires the Constitution and subsequently set aside.

The order will be subject to confirmation by the Constitutional Court in accordance with section 175(1) of the Constitution, and that any constitutional invalidity ruling issued will be suspended for 12 months following confirmation by the Constitutional Court to allow the respondents time to amend the contested legislation for constitutional compliance.

Critics say Mnangagwa’s appearance at an international women’s summit is a stark contradiction to her record back home.

“Auxillia Mnangagwa cannot be allowed to come to the FLAIR Summit to speak about women empowerment which she has no clue about. For 45 years she has been part of ZANU-PF which has championed the downfall of Zimbabwe. For the past 8 years she has been a useless First Lady,” read another widely circulated post from Moyo.

ZANU PF continues to deploy strategic community outreach programs in rural Zimbabwe, with critics saying such efforts serve more to secure political loyalty than to address long-term developmental needs.

In a recent example, the ZANU PF-linked group Boyz Dza Mdara held a free medical outreach in Mutorashanga. While praised by local leaders and villagers for bringing temporary relief to under-served communities, analysts argue that such initiatives are timed to maintain political dominance in rural areas.

“They know people here are desperate,” said a local teacher who requested anonymity. “So they give them health check-ups or food just before elections or major party events. It’s a way of keeping them dependent.”

During the event, Masango village head Mr. David Mupedzamasango publicly thanked the government, but added a plea: “We continue to appeal for more boreholes so that we minimise disease outbreaks when we have access to clean water.” His statement reflected the broader sentiment—gratitude for the help, but frustration over persistent neglect.

Ndengeza village head Mr. Pedziswa Togarepi also commended the outreach but hinted at the underlying struggle. “We have the elderly who cannot walk or travel to the clinics. Bringing services here is helpful—but this shouldn’t be a one-time thing,” he said.

Medical practitioner Ms. Michelle Phiri emphasized the practical benefits: “We are offering free consultancy and diagnosis to the people. We are also offering discounted specs so that we meet the needs of everyone according to their budgets.”

Yet some see these acts as calculated charity.

“ZANU PF often packages these handouts as development,” political analyst Tapiwa Chivanga said. “But the real aim is to present the party as a savior in areas where it has failed to invest in proper infrastructure for decades.”

ZANU PF officials deny any political motive. “Our President Dr. ED Mnangagwa always reminds us that nyika inovakwa nevene vayo—a nation is built by its own people,” said Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution deputy director Mr. Tichaona Chiwiro.

Mr. Andrew Mugabe, provincial chairperson of Boyz Dza Mdara, insisted the project was people-driven: “We mobilised this effort using our own resources and going forward we intend to construct a clinic here in Windsor.”

Ambitious school leavers with excellent exam results are being deceived by con artists posing as legitimate education consultants. These scammers exploit students’ dreams of studying abroad by promoting false “fully funded scholarship” offers to top global universities.

A recent investigation by Check Point has revealed a troubling surge in these fraudulent operations, which are targeting recent A-Level graduates eager to secure placements at international institutions.

The fraudulent networks—often orchestrated by Zimbabweans living overseas—are taking advantage of hopeful students’ limited access to reliable information and urgent desire for better opportunities.

The scams typically begin with polished social media ads and online listings, claiming affiliations with reputable universities in countries like the UK, US, India, Canada, and South Africa.

Applicants are drawn in by the professionalism of the process, which appears legitimate at first glance.

Unfortunately, many only realise the deception after parting with large sums of money and receiving nothing in return.

Harare Magistrate Tapiwa Banda has sentenced two Mahomed Mussa security guards to five years in prison after they were convicted of stealing US$195,000 from their employer in a carefully orchestrated inside job.

The convicted pair, Jeremiah Kwenda and Phineas Moyo, were both on duty at Mahomed Mussa Wholesalers on the night of December 21, 2024, when they allegedly colluded with an accomplice, Chamunorwa Muvhuti, to pull off the high-stakes theft.

According to court records, the two guards allowed Muvhuti to hide inside the premises after other workers had left. Later in the night, Muvhuti used a sharp metal object to force open a portable safe containing the large sum of cash. The theft was discovered the following day, prompting a swift police investigation.

In a dramatic turn, detectives tracked down Muvhuti on Christmas Day, arresting him in Pfungwe, where he had gone to pay lobola using part of the stolen funds. He was found with US$186,100, which he led police to recover. During interrogation, he implicated Kwenda and Moyo as key accomplices in the robbery.

Magistrate Banda initially handed each of the guards a five-year custodial sentence, but suspended two years on condition of good behaviour. An additional 18 months were suspended on condition of full restitution, meaning both will serve an effective 16 months behind bars.

Police have since confirmed that part of the stolen funds was successfully recovered, bringing partial relief to the complainant.

Two members of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) are standing trial at the High Court in Masvingo for allegedly beating a fellow soldier to death during a violent altercation at a nightclub.

The accused, Prosper Ncube (35) and Innocent Mazvuru (36), both stationed at Infantry 4/2 Brigade in Gutu, are alleged to have fatally assaulted Simbarashe Albert Gama—an army officer based in Harare—on 28 April 2024 during the early hours of the morning at MDD Nightclub near Mpandawana Growth Point.

According to court records, the confrontation began when the two accused men questioned Gama’s military identity after he claimed to be a soldier. When Gama failed to produce his military ID, they allegedly restrained him with a shoelace and began a brutal assault.

Eyewitnesses reported that Gama was repeatedly punched and kicked in the face until he bled and collapsed. Efforts to intervene by a barman, Cephas Mudyiwa, and patron Hardlife Maheya, were allegedly rebuffed by the accused.

Prosecutors allege that after assaulting Gama, the two soldiers took US$45 and a mobile phone from his pocket before fleeing the scene.

Military Police officer Tapera Mbizvo responded to the incident and found Gama unconscious. He was first taken to the 4/2 Camp Battalion Clinic before being transferred to Gutu Mission Hospital and later to Josiah Magama Tongogara Army Hospital in Harare. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries two weeks later.

The trial is being presided over by Justice Helena Charewa. Innocent Mazvuru is represented by Omen Mafa of Mutendi, Mudisi and Shumba Legal Practitioners.

Prominent fitness trainer and martial arts expert, Sensei Mugove Muhambi, was laid to rest at Epworth Cemetery following a moving and well-attended farewell.

Muhambi, who tragically lost his life in a road traffic accident on Saturday, was remembered as a distinguished sports figure and a unifying presence within Zimbabwe’s fitness and wellness circles.

Thousands of mourners joined the funeral procession, which brought traffic to a standstill from his St Martins residence through Seke Road and Chiremba Road, a testament to the profound impact he had on the community.

Among the dignitaries who attended to pay their respects were Sports, Recreation, Arts, and Culture Minister Lieutenant General (Rtd) Anselem Sanyatwe, Deputy Minister Emily Jesaya, and Finance and Economic Development Permanent Secretary George Guvamatanga.

Sensei Mugo, as he was affectionately known, is survived by his wife and two children. His legacy as a mentor, motivator, and community pillar will be cherished by all who knew him.

ZANU PF-aligned social media activists, commonly referred to as “varakashi,” have once again taken to Facebook to shower praise on controversial businessman Wicknell Chivayo, despite his tainted history with failed government contracts—including the multi-million-dollar Gwanda Solar project that never materialized.

In a recent wave of online posts over the weekend, the ruling party’s digital foot soldiers went as far as claiming that Chivayo’s wealth will soon rival that of Zimbabwe’s only internationally recognised billionaire, Econet founder Strive Masiyiwa.

“I KNOW YOU DIDN’T KNOW THIS,” one post read. “Sir Wicknell has a higher net worth than DJ Khaled.

DJ Khaled’s net worth is only $95 million USD, whilst Sir Wicknell has over $800 million USD. Soon he will be a billionaire, making him the second billionaire in Zimbabwe after Strive Masiyiwa.”

The posts further boasted about Chivayo’s lavish lifestyle, claiming, “DJ Khaled owns one private jet whilst our Sir has 2. Mansions and car collection too — Sir Wicknell is just leading from the front.”

One supporter went on to declare: “Muhombe Murume Uyu! Zimbabwe is blessed to have him.”

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has sparked outrage after initiating plans to hire external experts to replace lecturers who have been on strike for two months over poor wages—currently pegged at a mere US$230 per month.

Lecturers are demanding a salary of at least US$500 to match the rising cost of living, but authorities have so far failed to meet their demands. In a desperate bid to restore operations, the UZ administration has instructed faculty deans to compile lists of unstaffed modules and propose names of “potential experts” to be hired as adjuncts.

A source at the university slammed the move, calling it a “direct insult” to experienced academics who have served the institution for years under increasingly difficult conditions.

“Instead of addressing our legitimate concerns, the university is now trying to bring in outsiders—possibly with no experience in our context—just to silence the protest,” the source said. “This shows how little value is placed on our expertise and how the government continues to undermine the dignity of educators.”

Independent candidate Gift Gonese says he is determined to humiliate the ruling Zanu PF party in the upcoming Gutu East by-election set for June 14.

The burial took place at Nkulumane Provincial Heroes Acre on Thursday.

Mrs Mangena was posthumously granted liberation war heroine status in recognition of her vital role in supporting the armed struggle through resource mobilisation.

“Mrs Mangena was one of the women who carried the struggle forward by supporting soldiers. She is one of the women who were dedicated to supporting the liberation struggle,” said Zanu PF Secretary General, Obert Mpofu.

Sibanda, speaking at the event, praised the Mangenas’ unwavering commitment to the liberation cause.

“Let us take a leaf from the Mangenas. Their dedication to the struggle is something that should be emulated,” he said.

Sibanda, a polarising figure within Zimbabwe’s liberation movement, rose to national prominence in the early 2000s as a vocal defender of the Zanu PF-led government during the height of the land reform programme. He is widely remembered for leading the infamous One Million Man March in support of then-President Robert Mugabe in 2007 and for his militant rhetoric against opposition supporters.

During his tenure as War Veterans leader, Sibanda was implicated in orchestrating violence and intimidation during several election cycles, including the 2008 and 2013 polls. His combative stance and public threats against perceived enemies of the revolution earned him notoriety, although he was later sidelined by Zanu PF amid internal factional disputes.

Despite this, his re-emergence at a state-sanctioned event suggests a possible rehabilitation within the ruling party structures, particularly in Bulawayo.

The late Mrs Mangena is survived by her son, Lotshe Mangena, and nine grandchildren.

I am writing to humbly request consideration for a salary increase above the Poverty Datum Line (PDL) for teachers like myself. With a monthly income of approximately $340, I struggle to cover essential expenses.
A breakdown of my actual monthly expenses reveals the stark reality:
– Rentals: $150
– Food: $200 (for four)
– School fees: $200 (estimated monthly, $600 per term for boarding)
– Transport: $80
– Medication: $200 (for a family of four, private doctor)
– Others: $300
– Emergency fund: $130
Actual Total Cost: $1260

Given my income of $340, it’s clear that my salary is insufficient to cover basic needs, let alone save for emergencies.
I kindly request that the government consider increasing our salaries to better align with the cost of living and international labour standards.

After addressing the above issues, let’s boldly talk about Mission, Vision, and Values, and how they can be meaningfully implemented when teachers’ basic needs are met.

We appreciate the visit made by our Education Minister, Dr. Moyo, but feel that he should have immediately advocated for a salary package for teachers if he was a keen observer of our challenges.

A 24-year-old police officer stationed at the Gweru Police Protection Unit (PPU) is facing serious legal trouble after admitting to stealing two mobile phones, including one from a friend.

Thulani Sibanda appeared before Victoria Falls resident magistrate Gift Manyika on Friday and pleaded guilty to both theft charges. He was remanded in custody and is set to return to court on Monday for sentencing.

Prosecutor Portia Moyo told the court that Sibanda, who is originally from Chinotimba in Victoria Falls and currently residing at 11 New Township in Zvishavane, committed the first theft on May 12, 2025.

Sibanda had visited a friend at his residence, where the two sat in the yard listening to music from the friend’s Itel A70 phone. When the friend briefly went into the house, Sibanda took the opportunity to leave with the device.

After realizing the phone was missing, the complainant called his number and was shocked when Sibanda answered. He claimed to have taken the phone by mistake and promised to return it, but soon became unreachable after removing the SIM card. A police report led to the recovery of the phone from one Mr. Nyasha Samsun, who stated he had bought it from Sibanda. The phone, valued at US$270, was recovered in full.

The second incident occurred two days later, on May 14, at Moringa Shopping Centre in Victoria Falls. Sibanda allegedly posed as a customer at a local shop, then discreetly stole a Samsung Galaxy phone belonging to the shopkeeper while he was busy assisting other customers.

The shopkeeper was unable to locate the phone. However, Sibanda was arrested the following day in connection with another theft case. During a search, officers discovered he had the stolen Samsung Galaxy, valued at approximately US$200.

Both phones have since been recovered.

Redcliff, Kwekwe and Gweru on High Alert Amid Viral Bedbug Outbreak Rumours

Midlands Province – A wave of anxiety has gripped Redcliff, Kwekwe, and Gweru as social media platforms explode with alarming — and largely unverified — reports of a bedbug outbreak spreading beyond Harare’s Mbare suburb.

The panic was sparked by confirmed infestations in Mbare, a densely populated area of Harare, where residents have reported severe bedbug invasions prompting public health alerts and widespread online concern.

Fearing a similar situation, residents in the Midlands Province took to social media to report suspected sightings and raise alarms. However, local authorities have swiftly moved to dispel the claims, assuring the public that there is no outbreak in the region.

Kwekwe’s town clerk, Dr Lucia Mnkandla, dismissed the rumours as exaggerated.

“We no longer have major problems with bedbugs,” she said, pointing to the city’s ongoing fumigation and public hygiene awareness campaigns.

Kwekwe Mayor, Councillor Albert Zinhanga, acknowledged that minor cases had been reported in Amaveni and Mbizo Section 7, but stressed:

Harare, Zimbabwe – A 33-year-old man from Domboshava, Tendai Mashingaidze, was arrested over the weekend on charges of committing indecent acts with two 16-year-old boys. Mashingaidze appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs. Marewanazvo Gofa on Monday, where he faced allegations of coercing the minors into a sexual relationship.

According to court proceedings, Mashingaidze allegedly engaged in various sexual activities with the boys. The case came to light after he was reportedly caught in the act with one of the minors, prompting his immediate arrest. He was not required to enter a plea during the initial hearing.

One Makina was arrested last week for physically abusing schoolgirls.

Opposition Members of Parliament from the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) have rejected a controversial investment agreement between Zimbabwe and Belarus, arguing that it lacks transparency and could benefit a privileged few.

Although President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed the deal in 2023, it still requires parliamentary ratification to come into force. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Sheila Chikomo, brought the memorandum before Parliament seeking approval for the “Agreement on the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Investments” between the two countries.

Chikomo urged lawmakers to ratify the agreement by May 31, 2025, claiming it would enhance Zimbabwe’s appeal to foreign investors and foster economic development.

“The agreement is intended to secure and protect investments from both countries, and to provide a framework for mutual economic cooperation,” she said.

A parliamentary foreign affairs committee also recommended the deal’s approval, arguing it would support sustainable development and strengthen bilateral ties.

However, CCC legislators expressed deep skepticism, with one MP stating that the timing of the agreement’s presentation to Parliament was suspicious.

“The coincidence of the minister bringing this agreement before this August House was designed to be timed with the president’s official visit currently happening,” the MP said.

Critics pointed out the lack of clarity regarding the trade dynamics between Zimbabwe and Belarus, warning the agreement could be exploited by politically connected elites.

“We also need to be worried when we end up having a trade agreement which can be manipulated and exploited by a few individuals who are connected,” another MP added.

Another opposition MP criticized the imbalance in trade benefits, saying Zimbabwe would likely end up importing finished products such as tractors, while Belarus gained a foothold in local markets.

Mutsa Murombedzi, another CCC lawmaker, strongly cautioned against fast-tracking the deal without proper scrutiny.

“Parliament should not become a rubber stamp for executive deals,” Murombedzi said. “It’s a document that potentially grants disproportionate power to foreign capital with little accountability. I therefore call upon this house to defer the approval.”

The backlash comes as President Mnangagwa continues a four-day state visit to Belarus, where he has signed several Memoranda of Understanding in areas such as health, agriculture, infrastructure, and economic cooperation.

Despite the government’s push to solidify ties with Minsk, the opposition remains firm that Parliament must conduct due diligence before endorsing such high-level international agreements.

Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) legislator Mutsa Murombedzi has led a fierce pushback in Parliament against a proposed investment protection agreement between Zimbabwe and Belarus, warning that the deal would hand excessive power to foreign investors and turn Parliament into a mere rubber stamp.

“Parliament should not become a rubber stamp for executive deals,” Murombedzi said during debate in the National Assembly.

“This is a document that potentially grants disproportionate power to foreign capital with little accountability. I therefore call upon this House to defer the approval.”

Murombedzi’s comments came amid growing resistance from CCC Members of Parliament, who have accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration of forcing through deals that lack transparency and primarily benefit politically connected elites.

The agreement—initially signed by Mnangagwa in 2023—requires parliamentary ratification before it becomes legally binding. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Sheila Chikomo, presented the memorandum to lawmakers, urging them to ratify it by May 31, 2025.

“We also need to be worried when we end up having a trade agreement which can be manipulated and exploited by a few individuals who are connected,” one MP said.

Zanu PF Councillor Sengerai Manyanga has lashed out at popular musician Jah Prayzah, accusing him of desecrating a sacred Johane Masowe Apostolic song in one of his recent studio productions.

Manyanga, who represents a Masvingo ward and identifies as a devout member of the Johane Masowe sect, said he was deeply offended by Jah Prayzah’s rendition of “Hosanna”, a revered hymn traditionally used in prayer.

“Jah Prayzah ngaakumbire ruregerero kuMweya Mutsvene nekuJohani Masowe dzese,” Manyanga said. “Akaresvera ngirozi — kuimba Hosanna muStudio here shuwa? Kuridzira Hosanna mbira, magitare neKutamba Muchongoyo paHosanna mukuru here?”

(Translation: “Jah Prayzah must apologize to the Holy Spirit and to all Johane Masowe churches. He disrespected the angels — how can he sing Hosanna in a studio? Playing Hosanna with mbira, guitars, and dancing Muchongoyo to it — is that proper?”)

He further demanded that the song be removed from all platforms, describing it as a spiritual violation.

“Anofanira kudzima zvaakaita. Hosanna mumamato.” (“He must take down what he did. Hosanna is for prayer.”)

Manyanga’s comments come amid growing debate on social media, where opinions are split between those who view Jah Prayzah’s song as artistic expression and those who see it as a profanation of sacred content.

As of now, Jah Prayzah has not publicly responded to the accusations.
